New AI Tool Maps the Families of the Bible, A Song of Ice and Fire – Datanami
Posted: September 18, 2020 at 1:04 am
Diffbot is obsessed with knowledge. The Palo Alto-based knowledge-as-a-service company is on a quest to build the first comprehensive map of all human knowledge, according to its founder and CEO Mike Tung and its doing that using a medley of machine learning methods to automatically crawl, index, and correlate the content of the internet. Now, Diffbot is announcing the launch of the latest weapon in its gnostic arsenal: a new natural language processing (NLP) API that is fully integrated into Diffbots multilingual knowledge graph.
To showcase the newly available deep learning system, Diffbot turned to two sets of famous texts: the Bible and A Song of Ice and Fire, the series that served as the basis for the hit show Game of Thrones. While those works may seem worlds apart, they share a common trait of great interest to Diffbot: complex genealogies. The winding and weaving family webs of both the Bible and the fantasy world of Westeros pose a challenge to even astute readers and so, they posed the perfect challenge for Diffbots NLP API.
Diffbots API, which uses its vast knowledge of the web to analyze free text, chewed on the two massive documents, spitting out full (and accurate) genealogies for all traceable figures mentioned in both. For A Song of Ice and Fire, Diffbot even produced an infographic mapping out the complex familial ties in the series and highlighting some of the impressive statistics: 3,663 characters detected, 855 parent-child relationships, 700 sibling relationships, 322 spousal relationships and 15 minutes of NLP to do all of it.
An infographic displaying stylized results from Diffbots NLP analysis of A Song of Ice and Fire. Image courtesy of Diffbot.
With this new breakthrough, Diffbot continues to push the boundaries in achieving its vision in building an ImageNet for human language and realizing a Semantic Web that will transform the business world, Tung said. We have been testing its capabilities in beta and the results have been extremely promising in illustrating the true impact it will have on the professional world, especially in the fields of science, history, education, and religion.
Diffbot provides its knowledge graph for free to researchers, but the company says it has around 400 paying customers, as well including some big names like Adobe, Cisco, eBay, Salesforce, and Samsung.
I believe we are creating a system that will serve as a dedicated enterprise search engine, Tung continued. The real Semantic Web unbound by the ad-support model where businesses in every industry can find accurate and extensive information and build customized workflows on top of their queries.

GMIS, the international summit on robotics, AI and advanced manufacturing, is coming to Pittsburgh – NEXTpittsburgh
Posted: at 1:04 am
When business resumes some normalcy, Pittsburgh will get back to promoting what it has to offer in a bold way: an international summit that spotlights its role in robotics, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.
The city recently won a bid to host the inaugural Global Manufacturing and Industrialization Summit (GMIS) America in July the first event booked for 2021 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. As the first American city to join the partnership originating in the United Arab Emirates, Pittsburgh will host a GMIS satellite event each year.
Were really excited about this. Its a tremendous thing to put the international spotlight on Pittsburgh like this, and we hope to attract investment into our city and our region, says Simin Curtis, president and CEO of the American Middle East Institute (AMEI). This will be the first time that anything like this has been held here in Pittsburgh. For us, its a success story.
Its the result of several years of communication that began with a visit by a Pittsburgh delegation to Dubai in 2018, organized by AMEI, and follow-up visits by GMIS organizers to Pittsburgh. They toured the convention center last year and again last month, when Pittsburgh was able to demonstrate that the building is ready to safely host gatherings, says Jerad Bachar, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh.
One reason is the centers implementation of the VenueShield Environmental Hygiene Program, created by ASM Global, which ensures the building operates at the highest standard of health and safety, Bachar says.
Though current limitations on indoor and outdoor gatherings prevent many groups from meeting in Pittsburgh now, we know that the time will come soon when business and sports events will be held in the city, he says. We feel very confident that our venues, like the convention center, will be prepared to safely hold these events.
The GMIS model is meant to enable cities around the world to mobilize manufacturers and encourage collaboration and partnerships.
[Pittsburgh] serves as a great success story for its achievement in not just reviving its industrial heritage but also developing it into a high-tech manufacturing cluster, says Badr Al-Olama, head of the GMIS organizing committee. GMIS America will showcase Pittsburgh as a national and global hub for advanced manufacturing, serving as a perfect example for other cities around the world that are embarking on an advanced industrialization drive.
Bachar says the convention centers LEED Platinum Certified sustainability status also was a factor in securing the bid GMIS will encourage cities to promote inclusive and sustainable development, much as Pittsburgh has, and to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Hosting the summit will enable Pittsburgh to emphasize its robotics, AI and advanced manufacturing, making it the perfect choice, says Ira Moskowitz, CEO of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute.
From the first industrial revolution to todays emphasis on robotics and artificial intelligence, Pittsburgh has always been a leader in advanced manufacturing. This is a key reason why the U.S. government chose our city to be the home of the national ARM Institute, Moskowitz says. We welcome this global audience to Pittsburgh and hope that, together, we can continue to invest in the technologies andempower the peoplethat drive manufacturing capabilities forward.
Some people may have a false sense of what manufacturing is today, with its emphasis on new technologies, says Mark Thomas, president of the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance.
Weve undersold our future as an advanced manufacturing center, says Thomas. A summit is good when you can play host to a conversation that is relevant to the industries youre building because people dont just stay within the conference center and the hotels. It puts our message front and center with influencers who can determine significant investment opportunities that would benefit our region.
Theres a lot of interest to get us back to a place where we can continue growing and promoting our region.

5G: How Nokia is using drones, AR and AI to speed up deployments – ZDNet
Posted: at 1:04 am
Despite their own high-tech nature, many of the 3G and 4G networks we use are currently managed through manually filled spreadsheets, complete with the errors and inaccuracies that come with human-led processes.
For its next generation of 5G networks, telecommunications giant Nokia is hoping to change the state of things. The Finnish company has announced that it has now digitized all of its 5G network deployments globally, and that the new processes it has implemented will be used in every Nokia network rollout globally.
From drone-led site surveys to AI-powered tools that can identify defects in the network in real time: to manage and maintain the swarm of small cells, base stations and antenna arrays that will come with future 5G networks, Nokia is betting big on digital tools.
SEE: 5G smartphones: A cheat sheet (free PDF) (TechRepublic)
Nokia's president of global services Sanjay Goel said: "Today, many operators suffer from a fragmented way in how their next-gen 5G networks are designed, built and managed. The adoption of automation, AI and the digitalization of assets are vital steps in a CSP's digital transformation journey to capture the full potential of 5G."
5G holds the promise of new use cases that 3G and 4G can't support: with faster networks, industrial automation will increase, virtual reality and augmented reality might finally get a killer app, gaming will reach new heights, and edge computing will boom.
Data flows are expected to jump as 5G is deployed, from 35 exabytes recorded in 2019, to 73 exabytes in 2022. As they underpin this busy ecosystem-to-be, therefore, networks will need to be more reliable than ever. And increasingly, providers have come to realize that spreadsheets won't cut it.
Many experts have already anticipated that current inefficiencies in network management are likely to become problematic when it comes to overseeing the complexity of 5G infrastructure. In a blog post earlier this year, Goel put it bluntly: "It's clear that traditional methods have their limitations."
This observation prompted Nokia to entirely digitize the deployment, management and maintenance of the company's 5G networks. It starts from day one: site surveys are carried out by drones, to capture high-definition and detailed 3D mapping of future locations, and generate data to help engineers define the necessary materials for the build.
The goal is to build the site "first time right", instead of physically sending engineers in to inspect the site several times before starting the deployment.
Remote inspection is also prioritized throughout the site's life cycle, both through drone technology and augmented-reality tools. On-site checks can this way be carried out by one person, who is able to connect, if needed, to a remote expert fitted with an AR-enabled video collaboration tool a much more efficient process that cuts costs and saves time.
All of the data generated is added to a digital database for the site. Visual and statistical online records feed into real-time dashboards that experts can access remotely to see project information and key performance indicators.
SEE: Could 'Open' systems negate Huawei's influence on 5G?
Most importantly, all of the workflows generated by different parties working on the build are integrated in one single platform called Nokia Delivery Platform (NDP). A cloud-based management application, NDP covers the whole life cycle of the network's deployment, from planning and designing to testing and validation, through construction, commissioning and integration.
Bringing siloed processes together into one central platform could reap huge benefits for teams working on network deployments.
The Finnish company's commitment to digitization has already shown positive results. "We have over 100 customers worldwide and are delivering 100% of our projects digitally, replacing traditional ways of network rollouts through digitization and automation," said Carlijn Adema, Nokia's head of marketing at Nokia Global Services. "To give some figures: Nokia's digital deployment services mean 4G and 5G networks are up to 30% faster to market, and installation quality is increased by 30%."
Site visits, according to Nokia, have also decreased by a third. The digital revolution promised by 5G networks is only around the corner; but it seems that network providers have a lot to gain from transforming their own procedures first.

US Library of Congress launches AI tool that lets you search 16 million old newspaper pages for historical images – The Next Web
Posted: at 1:04 am
The USLibrary of Congress has released an AI tool that lets you search through 16 million historical newspaper pages for images that help explain the stories of the past.
TheNewspaper Navigatorshows how seminal events and characters, such as wars and presidents, have been depicted in the press. Jim Casey, an assistant professor of African American Studies at Penn State University whos tested the tool, said it would add a visual component to his historical research:
As I am writing a history of editors in the early United States, Newspaper Navigator will be an invaluable tool for charting the visual culture of the press. It provides us with a wealth of clues about the work of editors (behind the scenes) to forge the look and feel of the first drafts of history.
[Read: Are EVs too expensive? Here are 5 common myths, debunked]
The tool is the brainchild of Ben Lee, a Washington University researcher and the Library of Congress Innovator in Residence.
Lee first identified the visual content using an object detection model trained on annotations of World War 1-era pages from the Librays digitized collection of newspapers published between 1900 and 1963. This enabled the AI to detect photographs, illustrations, maps, cartoons, comics, headlines, and advertisements. It also uses Optical Character Recognition to extract a headline and caption from the corresponding article.
To use the system, simply enter a keyword in the Newspaper Navigatorand the AI will surface matches from a dataset of 1.56 million newspaper photos. You can alsospecify a date range and a state in which the newspaper was published.
You can then click on any image to download it, read the article it accompanied, view the full issue, or learn more about the newspaper.
The tool should be particularly useful for archivists, but it can also help all of us learn more about the stories of our past.
So youre interested in AI? Then join our online event, TNW2020, where youll hear how artificial intelligence is transforming industries and businesses.

Tools for Mars are being developed in preparation for colonization – Big Think

Although many places in the world are currently preoccupied by the COVID19 pandemic, most infectious disease experts believe that a pandemic is unlikely to end the human race. The Black Death of the 14th century was probably the worst case in history. It eliminated onethird of Europe's population, which ironically, lead to higher wagesdue to a lack of workers, a distrust of authorities who could not protect the people against the disease, and a reinvestment in humanity, all of which lead to the Renaissance.
If anything is to end the human race, it'll be climate change. The iconic Doomsday Clock was moved ahead from two minutes to 100 seconds to midnight, in January of this year. The clock has been moved ahead each year for the last four years. What's more, this is the closest it's ever been to midnight since its inception in 1947.
We've got about a decade to turn things around before the damage becomes irreversible. The situation is so disheartening, that at least one group of scientists speculates the reason we don't see a universe replete with alien civilizations is that it's hard for species to survive the climate change advances in technology inevitably cause.
Will data do us in?
If we do get lucky enough to survive and steer clear of any other likely, apocalyptic scenario, say a thermonuclear war, the eruption of a supervolcano or an enormous asteroid slamming into the Earth, we'll have about five billion years until the sun runs out of fuel. But between now and the death of our sun, there's another issue scientists weren't even aware of, until now. Information itself could thwart humankind. It isn't data per se but storing it. As societies increasingly rely on digital information and there's more and more of it, we'll one day reach a point where the number of bits being stored will outnumber the atoms that make up our planet. That's according to theoretical physicist and Senior Lecturer Melvin Vopson at the University of Portsmouth in the UK. A peerreviewed paper on his theory, called "The Information Catastrophe," was recently published in the journal AIP Advances.
"Currently, we produce 1021 digital bits of information annually on Earth," Vopson begins. This is based on an IBM estimate that humans produce 2.5 quintillion digital data bytes daily. With an assumed 20 percent growth rate, the number of bits we produce will outnumber the entirety of atoms on the planet in around 350 years. In a press release, Vopson said, "We are literally changing the planet bit by bit, and it is an invisible crisis."
There are a lot of variables to consider. For instance, the number of bits produced each year, data storage capacity, energy production and the size of the bit compared to the atom (mass distribution). There are humancentered factors too, such as population growth and the rate of access to information technology in developing countries. "If we assume a more realistic growth rates of 5%, 20%, and 50%," the paper states, "the total number of bits created will equal the total number of atoms on Earth after 1,200 years, 340 years, and 150 years, respectively."
It could be worse than predicted
In the most severe case, the 150year scenario, it would take approximately 130 years until all the power generated on Earth is sucked up by digital data creation and storage. In this version, by 2245, digital information's mass would equal half that of the Earth's. IBM states that 90 percent of the digital information we have today was only produced in the last ten years. "The growth of digital information seems truly unstoppable," Vopson said.
What's more, he believes his rates are conservative. He told me via email: "If we look only at the magnetic data storage density, it doubled every year for over 50 years." Not only might the generation of data increase at a faster clip, the estimate uses the thermodynamic energy limit for bit creation. This is the ideal case, the maximum possible efficiency, which we are miles away from, meaning the issue may arrive far sooner.
Dr. Vopson did offer one solution, using "nonmaterial media" to store information. He does not hold out hope for this, however. "I am more optimistic about the energy aspects as we will most likely master better ways of extracting energy from fusion (and) solar PVs to close to 100% efficiency." Quantum computing wouldn't be the answer, as quantum bits or qbits (bits in quantum superposition states) don't store data. Instead, storage happens using digital bits and classical computing.
Besides this theory, Vopson is the progenitor of the massenergyinformation equivalence, which states that information is an essential building block of the universe and it has mass. In this theory mass, energy, and information are all interconnected. Dark matter doesn't exist. Instead, the "missing" matter in the universe is the mass information itself contains.

Project Managers Anticipate Increased Tech Budgets and Enhanced Focus on AI in the Wake of Coronavirus, New Survey Reveals – Business Wire
Posted: at 1:04 am
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bigger technology budgets and greater use of artificial intelligence and automation are the main predictions for change post-coronavirus, according to a survey of over 1,000 project practitioners* by Association for Project Management (APM).
The poll, undertaken for APM by research company Censuswide, found that 36 per cent** of respondents anticipate technology budgets will increase within their business or team in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, while 30 per cent expect their business or team will make greater use of artificial intelligence and automation.
The survey revealed a split in opinions when it comes to how new solutions will be implemented, however. Some expect to grow relationships with existing suppliers while others anticipate new providers will be brought in.
When it comes to choosing a technology supplier, integration emerged as the most important factor overall for project management professionals, although this varied by industry sector.
Most important criteria for choosing a technology supplier (survey of 1,000 project professionals*)
Will Webster, head of technology at APM, said: Since the onset of lockdown, we have seen increased emphasis on the value of technology in facilitating new ways of working. As these new working methods become the norm, technology will be essential to support increased flexibility and productivity. Nowhere will this be more important than in the project profession, where successful outcomes are vital for delivering economic and social benefits for businesses and communities.
The findings of this survey reveal an opportunity for providers of technology solutions to strengthen existing partnerships and forge new ones through differentiation. While cost is clearly a factor, integration, reputation and scalability could be the difference to an organisation in selecting a particular hardware or software solution.

Overbond launches real-time AI bond pricing trading product – PRNewswire
Posted: at 1:04 am
MONTREAL andTORONTO and NEW YORK, Sept. 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Overbond Ltd., a fixed income analytics solution provider, today announced the launch of COBI-Pricing LIVE, the company's powerful new real-time AI bond pricing product. COBI-Pricing LIVE has the capacity to process real-time historical pricing data on coverage of over 30,000 securities with a refresh rate under three seconds, making it the fastest in the industry and the first-to-market offering such technology.
COBI-Pricing LIVE is the newest part of Overbond's innovative suite of AI algorithms, and fills a gap in the current market by aggregating multiple data sources on the client side across trading venues, data aggregators themselves and fundamental and settlement layer data. Bond markets suffer from illiquidity and non-uniform data sources used to price bonds and build credit curves, and fixed income traders require accurate bond pricing that can measure the liquidity of individual securities and enable automatic execution.
COBI-Pricing LIVE provides this requirement by leveraging the power of AI models that optimize prices for bonds with various liquidity profiles and performing deep historical benchmarking and curve fitting. With the entire market expected to see approximately 40% of trading performed by AI algorithms by 2024, COBI-Pricing LIVE is well-positioned given its intuitive, customizable nature and the fact that it is designed to help traders make more informed buying and selling decisions.
"Both sell side dealers and buy side asset managers are increasingly relying on AI applications to price fixed income securities in live trading and automate part of their daily workflows," says Vuk Magdelinic, CEO of Overbond. "However, most of the existing fixed income capital market data sources do not have enough coverage to provide traders with a view of true liquidity and price precision that can be executed automatically."
The bond market, notes Magdelinic, heavily relies on segregated data disseminated between counterparties, which creates fragmented data sets that do not cover the bulk of over-the-counter traded flows. COBI-Pricing LIVE collates and organizes large volumes of disparate data, including non-traditional data sets such as fundamental and settlement layer data. Using novel AI liquidity scoring, COBI-Pricing LIVE tiers all trades and determines if these qualify for full-automation, trader supervision, or should not be traded at the current time.
How COBI-Pricing LIVE works
The Overbond platform first sources raw live trading and fundamental data from a range of suppliers. These include Refinitiv, S&P Global Market Intelligence, ICE, EDI, Euroclear and FINRA TRACE, among others, as well as major credit agencies. It also collates company-level fundamental data, dealer quotations, internal client executed trade records and investor preferences through feedback.
COBI-Pricing LIVE then utilizes an advanced three phase AI algorithm:
Traders can train and customize models on their internal data to find a competitive edge in the market. The COBI-Pricing LIVE output can also be integrated into a data feed via an API, a desktop side-by-side integration with order-management-system (OMS), or viewed on the Overbond Platform as a downloadable table.
COBI-Pricing LIVE's Key Benefits for Traders
Built by traders, for traders, COBI-Pricing LIVE is designed to eliminate pain points, streamline and automate the trading process. The product does so through the following:
"Counterparties are increasingly adopting quantitative investing and liquidity risk monitoring techniques to automate their trading workflows. This includes the consumption of increasing amounts of alternative data and using new methods of fixed income pricing analysis such as AI analytics like Overbond's COBI-Pricing LIVE algorithm," continued Mr. Magdelinic.
