The Temp Screening Assistant for Misty II is an automated, contactless, and touchless solution for screening and detecting individuals with an elevated temperature and other health risk factors associated with COVID-19 infection. Companies benefit from reduced risk to their frontline staff and the elimination of surface hygiene concerns associated with touch-based systems. Screening is consistent, reliable and most of all friendly.

"This is different from any other solution for temperature screening on the market. It isnt a tablet. It isnt a kiosk. It isnt a human with a no touch thermometer. Misty II in the role of temperature screener is a new kind of assistant, who can make the whole temperature screening process pleasant and memorable. Thanks to where robot technology and the study of Human Robot Interaction (HRI) have evolved, its now very feasible to have an affordable and engaging robot experience, which is far better than the very dry kiosk-based experience," said Tim Enwall, CEO Misty Robotics.

Capabilities of the Temp Screening Assistant Core edition include: temperature screening using a high accuracy, blackbody referenced thermal imaging camera (accuracy within +/- 0.5 C), an interactive health question survey, immediate pass/fail result determination and recording, configurable SMS and/or email notifications, and web-based administration and reporting. Companies can upgrade to the Specialized edition which has an additional custom yes/no question capability, choice of available languages, custom greetings and the ability to elect to not store screening data.

With the Temp Screening Assistant companies have a cost-effective solution that is easy to use, easy to maintain and easy to manage. (A consistently friendly attitude comes standard.) When compared to human-based solutions it is a fraction of the hourly cost of a human and no PPE is required. This is an advanced approach making tablet-based approaches feel very yesteryear.

The Temp Screening Assistant is a future-proof investment. Misty II has ongoing utility well after the need for COVID-19 screening. She can be put on the assignment of a general office assistant or any of the assignments found in the Misty Robotics Solution Hub. As a platform robot, a companys in-house software developers can also build new skills (robot applications) for her.

Story continues

"Robot (as a temperature screener) really hit a lightbulb for me. It was amazing. Smart solutions for a modern problem," stated David Torres, Safety Program Coordinator, North America, Twilio.

"Mistys arrival at our site comes at a time when everyone could benefit from additional interactions that are positive and consistent," stated Per Schenck, Health and Safety Coordinator Mental Health Partners.

Both the Core and Specialized editions will be available for pilot deployments starting mid-July. Pricing for the Temp Screener Assistant starts at $2,999 + a modest monthly fee. A leasing model is also available. For more information visit temperature.mistyrobotics.com. To see the Temp Screening Solution in action visit https://youtu.be/k3weTvjxfnE.

Qualcomm, a leader in wireless technology, has recently releasedthe world's first 5G and AI-enabled robotics platform.

Qualcomm says the Robotics RB5 platform includes novel technologythat will acceleratethe development of power-efficient, high-computing robots and drones for applications ranging from industrial and enterprise applications todefense and military sectors.

Specifically, some of the applications this platform can enhance includeinventory robots, retail robots, pick-sort-place robots, cleaning robots, delivery drones, healthcare robots, and defense robots.

Qualcomms Robotics RB5 platform, punctuatedby their QRB5165 processor, supports a number of connectivity protocols through Qualcomm's FastConnect subsystems: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, 4G, and 5G.

According to Qualcomms press release, the platform features artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities while still minimizingpower consumption. This platform has been designed specifically for applications in robotics, and it comes with hardware, software, and other development tools to help designers with such applications.

RB5 is said to be an improvement from the companys RB3 platform, which isstill used in industry today.

The RB5is the first of its kind to implement 5G technology, and there are already over 20 early adopters. More than30 companies are developing the necessary hardware and software for these technologies as well.

Qualcomms product page shows the myriad of capabilities for the RB5 platform. First, it supports software for Linux, Ubuntu, and ROS (Robot Operating Systems) 2.0. It also has neural processing and FastCV Computer Vision SDKs, which optimizedeep learning performance and offera mobile-optimized computer vision library, respectively.

The platform accounts for a variety of user interactions with a device, includinggesture and facial recognition, text recognition, tracking, and augmented reality. In addition, it utilizes visual simultaneous localization and mapping (visual SLAM), which allows the robot to both map the area around it while locating itself in the map it has made using only cameras.

The platform utilizes multiple digital signal processing (DSP) units for computation, audio and sensor signals, ISPs, a dedicated AI engine called the Hexagon Tensor Accelerator and a dedicated computer vision block called the Enhanced Video Analytics Engine.

Some of theRB5 platform's key specifications include:

Qualcomm seemed to pay special attention to detail with the platform's cameras. RB5 includes a single camera with zero shutter lag (ZSL),3fps, and up to 64 megapixels (MP). The dual camera in the platform also features ZSL,30fps, and up to 25 MP. These cameras include security features as well.

When it comes to video capabilities, Qualcomm says the platform is capable ofup 8K video capture, 4K HD capture, simultaneous 64 MP photo capture, and 10-bit color depth video capture.

Security was paramount in designing this platform, and as such, Qualcomm prioritized built-in security in the cameras as well as a crypto engine, accelerator, and secure boot.

With this platform, Qualcomm saysrobotics designers can perform multiple high complexity processes while consuming a minimal amount of power. Beyond this, the connectivity power of 5G drives this device even further, allowing for capable, smart, and fast robot functionality.

Peek inside Tesseract HQ: Robotics startup builds future in real time (with humans on the brain) – Startland News

Posted: at 6:33 am

As an intentionally lowered screen begins to lift on Tesseract Ventures, once-seemingly-wild ideas that lived only in tech inventor John Boucards head are being realized.

With them, the future of work is taking shape 3D-printed piece by 3D-printed piece hardwired in the suburbs of Kansas City.

John Boucard, Tesseract Ventures

We were a bit mysterious in the beginning, of course we were, admitted Boucard, founder and CEO of the rising robotics startup, describing the companys approach to its emerging body of work the subject of curious whispers within the entrepreneurial and investor community for nearly two years.

We have a tremendous momentum and focus. Its a different kind of company. We have creatives, we have engineers, we have strategists.

And they have robots. But Tesseract is about much more than Tess the name given to several vocal helpers rolling about Tesseracts Johnson County headquarters, Boucard said.

Click here to learn why Tesseract was named one of Startland News Kansas City Startups to Watch in 2020.

Dave Starr, John Boucard and Jason Harrell; Tesseract Ventures

Room for imagination and practical use

While Boucard and his team remain tight-lipped about certain aspects of the startups product development, Tesseract started to reveal itself in May with the launch of its first mainstream product, the Tesseract PRISM wearable badges that track and document the locations and proximity of workers.

PRISM by Tesseract

Weve been very careful how we message our business, because its a crazy creative place, Boucard said of the launch of PRISM.

Its development and the ecosystem it creates within a construction work site among many use cases for customers is only the beginning for Tesseracts capabilities, he said.

Progress toward the future is already well underway as Tesseract settles into its new, permanent home in Overland Park, Boucard told Startland News during a tour of the space where it proudly displays its latest creation alongside Tesseract-designed toys and still-under-wraps tech prototypes.

The move to a 5,500-square-foot office, creative studio space and workshop consolidates two locations formerly located in the Crossroads Arts District and Martin City.

We see the integration of a Tesseract environment as a smart space of the future, he explained, showing off the buildings Tesseract room, which was designed to bring its users workspace to life.

We have exceptional microphones and cameras and were surrounded by screens. We can have confidential and secret conversations. People feel comfortable talking, its completely secure. We can capture every note and share it to everyone instantly thats in the room with us, Boucard explained of the futuristic-looking space, which looks and feels like the set of a science fiction or superhero movie.

The Tesseract room

We built it though. We actually went and did it, he laughed, eager to show the space to the world and people whove dreamed of something like it existing.

Why would we do that? Why would we build a room like that? Boucard questioned, adding the space is most often used as a think tank.

I wake up at 4 a.m. no alarm and I [can] walk into the Tesseract room and [when the room recognizes my PRISM badge,] I see Japanese cherry blossoms and we have a full blown stereo system, its second to none. Its visually appealing and thats the inspiration for me in the morning.

Invigorated by the space, Boucard and his team, which includes Dave Starr, vice president of research and development, can then start their day in the smart space, analyzing everything from employee efficiency with full PRISM integration to catching up on emails, displaying blueprints in 3D and hosting virtual meetings with customers scattered across the world.

We walk in the room, Welcome Dave. Welcome John, and all the documents that were working on show up on the screen, Boucard said with enthusiasm.

We have special pucks we can put on the table that [pull up] wraparound menus. We can touch it and then everything shows up. Weve got our own Mosaic RTLS [real-time locating system] that keeps track of our own PRISM badges.

What if buildings were robots too?

As the technology develops, Tesseract plans to continue working within the construction space, Boucard noted, adding the company sees it as a natural entry point for the introduction of robotics into society. Every location from hospitals to offices could one day benefit from the technology, he said.

Our strategy is a bit different. Even though were designing robots to integrate with people in the construction phase, the biggest business opportunity past that is the building of the future and the business that could occur if the building was intelligent from the start, he explained.

Tesseract sees such a vision achieved by equipping new construction buildings of the future with fleets of robots that can alert property owners to such concerns as leaks and air quality issues, as well as sterilize working environments an especially useful tool in the era of a pandemic, Starr added.

I think long term its a much larger play around the Internet of Things and understanding where things are in spaces, he said.

Decker Starr, Greg Lorett, John Boucard, Dave Starr, Jason Harrell, Helena Boucard, Spencer Cook, and Matthew Claar; Tesseract Ventures

Automation without replacing humans

When you walk in, you see the quote on the front door that says, Theres nothing more human than technology, and for us I think that means a lot because you cant swing a dead cat without finding another software vendor out there that wants to automate something, Starr said. And while we believe and we understand that automation and streamlining is essential to the survival of business, how do you do that in a way that makes it more human and allows humans to work better together? Thats really at the core of what we do.

Wired with purpose, robots designed with intention are the future, Boucard said, and Tesseract is the only place in the city where youll find them roaming the office and making jokes around the watercooler.

Its a different way to go about the market versus, Were going to build this robot and its going to go clean floors. Weve had big conversations with cleaning companies [as a result of the pandemic] where theres unions and they dont want robots replacing their jobs, he explained.

Our take is much different. Were saying this is a solution that you want to send in before the humans.

Perfect harmony between humans and robots might seem like the far-fetched plot of a science fiction movie, but for Boucard, no idea is off limits, he said.

One thing that I remember when I first started the business, I pitched to Digital Sandbox, he recalled of an early experience with the Kansas City proof-of-concept funding program. I didnt get it. It was [for] 25-large and I just thought, You know what? Im not thinking big enough.

The rejection ultimately lit a fire under Boucard and has served as fuel for what stands to become the only top tech startup in Kansas City to be 100 percent backed by local funders, he said.

Now we have the great luxury of picking and choosing the best of the best the best of the best in KC. And were lucky we have a very patient investor group of talented individuals that share that vision, Boucard said.

Click here to read more about Tesseracts most recent investment.

No bullshit here. Its not my style, he said. Im straight up, lets get it done, get the best people, the best technology, the best law firm, the best strategists and go do it. So were taking a swing at it.

Alias Robotics Alerts: Robot Disinfecting Hospitals From COVID-19 is Highly Insecure – PR Newswire UK

Posted: at 6:33 am

The company that actively collaborates with national cybersecurity institutes in Spain and Germany, has recently published a new report that discloses numerous security vulnerabilities that security researchers have found over a well-known robot manufacturer, the danish Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR), a company that has sold more than 10,000 units of their Autonomous Mobile Robots that is the basis for the famous ultraviolet ray disinfection robot against COVID-19.

The first vaccine for robots

"Taking care of robot health is taking care of human health. That's what we defend in Alias Robotics, and manufacturers all over the globe ignore," points outEndika Gil-Uriarte, CEO at Alias Robotics, a startup launched in 2018.

To protect these robots against cyberattacks, Alias Robotics has developed RIS, the first "vaccine" for robots. The Robot Immune System is software that gets installed into the robots, that has been co-developed by cell biology experts and security researchers, to protect them against cyber attacks.

RIS mimics our own human immune system and adapts to the robot behaviour, while using Artificial Intelligence to identify novel threats, before they hit. As if it were a "vaccine" RIS exposes the robot to an array of different dangers and prepares its immune system to avoid getting hit by malware. The robot develops its virtual antibodies to combat cyber threats, so RIS is what is commonly known as an intelligent anti-virus for robots.

RIS is offered free of charge for research and development purposes and exceptionally, RIS is offered at no cost for healthcare and other professional robots while COVID-19 lasts.

RDS & AMP: Building a Resilient Business with AI and Robotics – waste360

Improving MRF Economics & the Workforce

Just a few months ago, when unemployment was low, it was tough finding people who came in on time and wanted to do the sorting we need. At that time, we installed systems from AMP Robotics to help with the labor shortage we were experiencing. AMPs robots have helped us to better manage our employee base, allowing us to stabilize our sorting workforce and improve productivity. We also had an opportunity to shift two positions paid for through the cost savings of not adding hard-to-find people.

We hired an individual with a background in robot technology for a new management position. We also retrained one of our existing sort line employees, and paid him more, to help with daily maintenance on the robots. The robots don't require a lot of maintenance, but we need someone to clean the suction cups and screens and provide general oversight. By retraining an employee for a better career opportunity and creating a new, higher-skilled role, were aligning our staff with optimization and improving MRF economics.

Works With Your Infrastructure

Another benefit to working with AMP is how quickly you can get up and running. Their units can be dropped in with no changes to existing infrastructure, usually over a weekend. Since installation, theyve done little retrofits and tweaks to our system to ensure its meeting our expectations. In fact, its exceeded them. We are getting more picks per minute now than we did when the robots were first installed. They keep getting better!

Navigating Sudden Changes & Challenges

We, along with the rest of the industry, experienced several changes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. For one, theres been much heavier residential volume due to folks staying home, while commercial and industrial volumes dropped off. Weve also had instances where employees havent shown up to work, or had to take some time off. Weve fielded extra questions about safety and had to put a policy in place around personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves and masks. Weve started wiping down our machines more regularly and implemented social distancing measures. Through all this, the robots have not missed a beat, and they dont have to worry about PPE.

Weve seen more cardboard on our lines, thanks to the Amazon effect, as people stayed home and ordered things online. And with people eating out less, instead cooking at home, more basic itemstin cans, plastic bottlesare ending up in the stream. Along with these changes, people seem to be recycling more, and there may be some newer recyclers, which is generating heavier volumes. These factors are producing additional contamination, which is another challenge. If it werent for the robots, wed probably be looking at two to four additional people to handle the greater levels of volume and contamination weve seen.

Fully Operational & Meeting Demand

The good news is we've already deployed AMPs robots, which are helping us weather the crisis. We have four robots powered by AI that we use for quality control as well as sorting. Weve maintained full operations and can handle the heavier volumes of recyclables driven by shelter-in-place orders and rapidly changing consumer behavior. Were meeting the increased demand for paper and cardboard while protecting our employees and controlling costs. Despite some employee absences, the robots have allowed us to recover high volumes of recyclables to take advantage of demand pricing.

Were running at full capacity because AMPs robots are there all day long, and the robots arent charging us overtime. They work at the same speed consistently, whether fresh in the morning from a cup of coffee or at the end of a 10-hour shift. Without the robots, wed see residue coming off the line and items that shouldve been caught. We dont see that anymore. AMPs robots are designed to operate in tough conditions, like the harsh environments you come across in recycling.

More Commodities, Higher Value

With AMPs software, we can pick additional products we werent before because of the faster speeds and the ability of AMPs vision system to identify different materials in the stream. Were extracting additional commodities, and getting a cleaner product because were removing contamination that mightve slipped through in the past. AMPs technology offers the flexibility for us to decide what we want to sort as picks per minute increase. Plus, the vision system learns and expands its scope over time, too, so we get smarter as the system gets smarter.

Robots have been a huge benefit during this time, but even when the pandemic subsides, the shift toward automation and reliance on technology that AMP is leading will continue. As an industry, we usually make a little change, turn a knob, push a button, and we see what happens. We dont get much feedback on the impact. Now, having real-time data on changes youre making and how it affects your operation is a fantastic advancement for recycling. I see that trend continuing as companies like AMP keep innovating and integrating those advancements into MRFs. Data, transparency, and other insights are only going to make us more efficient and effective and allow MRFs to operate at a lower cost.

The Role of Supervised Autonomy in Mobile Manipulation – Robotics Business Review

Posted: at 6:33 am

An Autonomy SpectrumAs the robots of today move beyond the factory floor and into the outside world, the spectrum of robotic technology has expanded. On one end of the spectrum, teleoperation has made it possible for operators to be in complete control while controlling robots from a safe distance. With teleoperation, a person is responsible for 100 percent of the decision-making and the direct actions of the robot through the use of a remote controller.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are fully autonomous robots, which keep humans completely out of the loop. Fully autonomous robots are responsible for all decision-making and actions, as well as all error handling and recovery. They must adapt to varying environments and recover from errors entirely on their own. Even though popular culture wants us to believe that AI-driven robots are now primed to take over all of humanity, it will be a long timeperhaps several decadesbefore we see fully autonomous, outdoor mobile robotic systems, simply because robots cannot yet fully think, act or respond to adaptions on their own, especially in unstructured or changing environments.

Supervised AutonomyIn between these two extremesand readily available for implementation todayis supervised autonomy. This type of autonomy has two distinct levels: in the first level, a person is making the decisions and the robot is responsible for the direct action. In the second level, the robot is responsible for the high-level decision-making and the direct actions, and operator remains in the loop solely for error handling and recovery.

Supervised autonomy can allow robots to perform duties that are otherwise hazardous to humans, while still giving the robot operators full control over specific tasks. This technology also can serve as a force multiplier when there are labor shortages. In addition, because this technology transfers physically demanding tasks to the robot, older workers can stay on the job longer while using their expertise to optimize control of the robots.

Unlike full autonomy, supervised autonomy is ready now for environments that are both controlled (not open to the public) and populated only by trained personnel.

The time is right for businesses to consider using supervised robotic autonomy to augment their staff and operations.

Many IndustriesFor instance, industries such as aviation, construction, energy, and oil and gas, which all share common requirements for trained personnel, controlled environments, resilience to external factors, and the cognitive ability to learn and adapt, can especially benefit from supervised autonomy.

Although this technology has the potential to benefit many industries, the energy industry could find it particularly useful. The maintenance of high-voltage power lines is, without a doubt, one of the most hazardous manual labor jobs across any industry. Using robots to conduct dangerous inspection or repair tasks could protect workers from serious or even fatal injuries from falls, burns and electrocutions. At first, robots could be tele-operated by experienced operators. Once the system has learned from the experiences and data collected during teleoperation tasks, it could transition to a supervised autonomous system. Since workers would only be involved in a supervisory capacity to assist with error handling and recovery, they would be kept completely out of harms way.

Time is RightOverall, the time is right for businesses to consider using supervised robotic autonomy to augment their staff and operations. Whether on the factory floor, in the operating room, or 40 feet in the air on a power line, supervised autonomy can help to keep workers out of harms way while improving productivity.
