Preferred Commerce Releases the Most Advanced Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) Product Line Worldwide With the Launch of Its THRIV5 Supplements – BioSpace

Posted: June 17, 2020 at 12:46 am

WELLINGTON, FL / ACCESSWIRE / June 11, 2020 /Preferred Commerce, Inc. (OTC PINK:OCBM) announced today that full-scale distribution has launched on its new line of cutting edge supplements, THRIV5, bringing to market the most highly advanced all-natural immune system support and nutritional enhancement products ever recorded. The THRIV5 line is fortified with superoxide dismutase (SOD), arguably the most important and powerful enzyme in the body, which accelerates reparation of damaged cells and assists in generating new cells at a rapid pace, helping to restore the human body with the enzymes and antioxidants that are naturally depleted every day. It strengthens the immune system at such a level that protects the inhibition of any harmful pathogen, including viruses associated with the common cold, flu, respiratory infections, and COVID-19.

THRIV5 products have been shown effective in relieving some symptoms related to these conditions, as well as promoting overall well-being with daily use, providing sharper focus and attention, and enhancing the cardiovascular system and exercise recovery process. Primary antioxidants, such as SOD, are the human body's first and most important line of defense against highly reactive, potentially destructive oxygen-derived free radicals. Research has revealed that SOD decreases with age. Mounting evidence suggests that raising SOD levels may help guard against disease, as well as extend life expectancy.

Although there have been numerous attempts to deliver SOD successfully into the human body through ingestion, up until now no other product has been able to survive the digestive tract to allow SOD to stabilize the gut, be properly delivered to the bloodstream and effectively balance the neurological system so the SOD can protect, enhance and revitalize the body naturally. Preferred Commerce and its partner, Advance Nature LLC of Holtsville, NY, have used Advance Nature's patent-pending, cutting-edge formulation and extraction process, along with carefully selected additional enhancers, to yield a formula that exceeds far more than any other SOD product in the marketplace. The addition of high enzyme activity of SOD and another patented prebiotic soluble fiber make THRIV5 more powerful to achieve therapeutichealth benefits in multidirectional pathways. It's the only supplement that provides energy, strength, alertness, and well-being.

For decades consumers have been utilizing all the most nutrient-rich natural foods like acai berries, blueberries, pomegranate, cherries, Concord grapes, goji berries, and green tea as antioxidants and immunity boosters. THRIV5 integrates these same mega fruits and teas, combining them with SOD that's been extracted from a rare class of cantaloupe at the highest rates ever recorded to deliver a powerful boost to the immune system. Preferred Commerce CEO Michael Ferraro stated: "In our due diligence of this technology, we were really blown away at the number of striking testimonies we'd received and the vast number of health conditions these products have helped people with. Is THRIV5 a cure? No. But upon discovering how free radicals and oxidative stress cause or accelerate cell damage and death, leading to just about any health condition, we felt a timely moral obligation to bring this to the world to help people live healthier, assist their bodies to become stronger and repair themselves faster and to fight potentially lethal flu and airborne viruses. This is simple as far as we're concerned: Every day the body has damage being done to its cells because SOD in our bodies is depleted, allowing physical destruction. Our products can now successfully get into the body to repair those cells and assist in generating new cells faster than the damage occurs. As we say, healthier cells equal a healthier body in every way."

Physicians and scientists worldwide have been evaluating SOD and its effects on many health conditions over the past 90 years. Results have been well-documented in cases involving cancer, arthritis, RA, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, influenza, and viruses such as H1N1. A recent study conducted by the University of Virginia even examined how SOD can help protect humans from contracting COVID-19. Preferred Commerce has received many testimonials from THRIV5 users, including those with ADHD, reporting that the product line has increased their overall energy, focus, and mental clarity, bringing balance and providing natural energy, reportedly yielding results comparable to prescribed medications without the range of negative side effects.

Ferraro concluded: "The effectivity of these products is the result of the advanced patent-pending SOD delivery process, which sustains its integrity until it reaches the bloodstream. The discovery is not new, but we feel the ability to harness absorption is one of the greatest breakthroughs in history. We want to be entirely clear in that we do not sell FDA-backed or FDA-tested products. We sell all-natural supplements that actually enable the body to protect itself, repair damaged cells, and generate healthier cells through the patent-pending formulation of the body's naturally manufactured enzyme, SOD. We feel greatly privileged to be able to provide these products, knowing their well-documented potential to enhance the quality of life for people everywhere."

Currently, the mostaccepted theoryof aging and disease purports that the gradual accumulation of free radicals, and the harm they cause, are responsible for many of the adverse changes that eventually cause aging and diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, arthritis, heart and liver disease, atherosclerosis, immune system decline, brain dysfunction, diabetes, and cataracts. Results vary from person to person, based on individual factors, such as the severity of illness.

The top-quality THRIV5 M3 Gel delivers extracts for the most nutrient-rich berries like Acai, Blueberry, Pomegranate, cherry, Concord Grapes, Goji, and green tea as antioxidants and immunity boosters. The products have also increased overall healthier lifestyles, cardiovascular system, mental capacity and focus on people who do not have any known health issues. Preferred Commerce has long been a solution provider to the horticulture and agriculture industries, as well as to consumers. In addition, the company has created training and educational products that have fueled billions of dollars in sales for Fortune 500 companies, while its family-friendly how-to-grow products have educated nearly 1 million children on how to successfully grow their own healthy food at home. AgeX Therapeutics and Pluristyx Announce Manufacturing, Marketing, and Distribution Agreement to Expand Access to Clinical-Grade Human Pluripotent…

Posted: at 12:45 am

ALAMEDA, Calif. & SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AgeX Therapeutics, Inc.. (AgeX: NYSE American: AGE), a biotechnology company developing therapeutics for human aging and regeneration, and Pluristyx, Inc. (Seattle, WA), an advanced therapy tools and services company serving customers in the rapidly growing fields of regenerative medicine and cellular and gene therapies, today announced they have entered into a Manufacturing, Marketing, and Distribution Agreement through which Pluristyx will undertake these activities on behalf of AgeX with respect to AgeXs research- and clinical-grade ESI brand human embryonic stem cells, sometimes referred to as hESCs.

The agreement builds on Pluristyxs strategy to manufacture, market, and distribute high-quality standardized Ready-to-Use and Ready-to-Differentiate pluripotent stem cells to industry and academic scientists intent on developing therapeutic products to treat human disease. AgeXs ESI hESC lines are distinguished for being the first clinical-grade hESC lines created under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP). The AgeX ESI hESC lines are listed on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stem Cell Registry and are among the best characterized and documented stem cell lines available worldwide.

The agreement is a key step in AgeXs licensing and collaboration strategy to facilitate industry and academic access to its hESC lines, its PureStem cell derivation and manufacturing platform, and its UniverCyte immunotolerance technology in order to generate near- and long-term revenues.

A recent FDA IND clearance for a biotech company to begin a human trial for a cell therapy candidate derived from an AgeX ESI hESC line has amplified interest from industry and academia to utilize our cells in regenerative medicine. It is AgeXs goal to make its cell lines the gold standard when it comes to therapeutic products derived from pluripotent stem cells. We are delighted to be working with the Pluristyx team given their extensive cGMP manufacturing experience with pluripotent stem cells, said Dr. Nafees Malik, Chief Operating Officer of AgeX.

Pluristyx is excited to be working with AgeX and their ESI hESC lines. As AgeX intends to make their cell lines the gold standard, our aim is to disrupt and redefine stem cell therapy manufacturing with our proprietary, high-density format, Ready-to-Use and Ready-to-Differentiate hESC lines, which will dramatically reduce both cost and time in translating revolutionary therapies from bench to bedside, said Dr. Benjamin Fryer, CEO of Pluristyx.

Academic and biopharma organizations will need to obtain separate commercial licenses from AgeX in order to advance their cellular product candidates generated from AgeX hESC lines into human clinical trials and commercialization. AgeX retains all rights to manufacture its own in-house cellular products as well as to extend license rights to other third parties.

About AgeX Therapeutics

AgeX Therapeutics, Inc. (NYSE American: AGE) is focused on developing and commercializing innovative therapeutics for human aging. Its PureStem and UniverCyte manufacturing and immunotolerance technologies are designed to work together to generate highly defined, universal, allogeneic, off-the-shelf pluripotent stem cell-derived young cells of any type for application in a variety of diseases with a high unmet medical need. AgeX has two preclinical cell therapy programs: AGEX-VASC1 (vascular progenitor cells) for tissue ischemia and AGEX-BAT1 (brown fat cells) for Type II diabetes. AgeXs revolutionary longevity platform induced Tissue Regeneration (iTR) aims to unlock cellular immortality and regenerative capacity to reverse age-related changes within tissues. AGEX-iTR1547 is an iTR-based formulation in preclinical development. HyStem is AgeXs delivery technology to stably engraft PureStem cell therapies in the body. AgeXs core product pipeline is intended to extend human healthspan. AgeX is seeking opportunities to establish licensing and collaboration arrangements around its broad IP estate and proprietary technology platforms and therapy product candidates.

Avoid eating these artificial preservatives whenever possible – Yahoo Lifestyle

Food Flashexplores the wild world of food news, from the health benefits of red wine to why dark chocolate is actually good for you.

Our favorite foods all have a shelf life, but did you know that many of them are living far beyond their original expiration date?

Thanks to artificial preservatives, fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products last much longer now than they naturally would, and that is not necessarily good news.

Not all preservatives are bad for you, of course. Humans have been using natural preservatives like salt and sugar for thousands of years to keep food from spoiling,

Be cautious with artificial preservatives, though. According to Healthline, many of them can have harmful effects on your health.

Sulfites, for example, are used to prevent discoloration, but they have been linked to asthma.

Sodium benzoate is found in sodas and used in fermentation, but its also considered a carcinogen.

Nitrite, another carcinogen, gives hot dogs their unique red color.

Try avoiding preservatives as much as you can by shopping for organic, fresh and naturally labeled products.

Kyrie Irving’s Concerns About The NBA’s Return Can’t Be Dismissed – UPROXX

Posted: at 12:44 am

Balancing doing what you love in the face of something dangerous requires courage. Even more courage, one can argue, is required to stand up to your employers and peers when it comes to voicing your concerns in an attempt to make that aforementioned dangerous scenario a little more safe.

Brooklyn Nets standout and NBPA vice president Kyrie Irving reportedly hosted approximately 200 of his peers on a Zoom call Friday night to express his opinions about the league taking over some property at Disney for a bubble league to wrap out its season. While he was among the most prominent voices against this arrangement, Irving was ruled out for the rest of the season in March following shoulder surgery, and he will not take the floor in Orlando.

Among a number of lines Irving apparently said on the call, the quote that flew around NBA Twitter was Irvings declaration that he wasnt with the systemic racism and the bullsh*t. Irving is of the belief that playing NBA games would drown out the voices in American streets crying for social reforms.

While hes been the person making headlines given his superstar stature, Irvings quotes arent the only ones we should pay attention to.

It helps to establish that Fridays Zoom call was a union meeting where members could do the thing they pay into the union to do: weigh in on matters that affect them. If there was any appropriate forum for Kyrie to voice his issues, it was then. If one of the VPs of the union either didnt voice his concerns nor those who voted him there, hed be failing the rest of the players.

What also matters is that Kyrie doesnt appear to be alone when it comes to the idea that the NBA shouldnt come back and that games are a distraction to the Black Lives Matter movement is a real one amongst players, and it should not only be listened to, but also be addressed. Lakers guard Avery Bradley reportedly called on his fellow players to play chess, not checkers in approaching all of this. Lou Williams tweeted that he believes basketball is a distraction right now, even if he would play if there was a game scheduled for tomorrow. Dwight Howard, who knows first-hand about the horrors of COVID-19, reportedly said on the call that he thinks players should use this moment to, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, take a stand and to use their collective power to implement change in the justice system and how police treat people of color instead of playing.

Beyond the very valid questions of how restarting the league would impact the effectiveness of player activism are the legitimate concerns over how safe the bubble would be. A high-ranking NBA executive admitted to NBC Sports Tom Habestroh that Orlando isnt a bubble, its a mesh hat. J.J. Redick, along with a few other players in his replies, voiced concerns over this. If the NBA and Disney havent functionally figured out a way to keep staff safe, why would any player put their career in the hands of rushed plans to save what little basketball revenue they can?

An added wrinkle to the location issue is that Florida is setting record numbers in terms of positive tests for COVID. More than 3,000 people tested positive over the weekend in the same state that will host these playoffs. Even if Disney happens to be the insulated place in Florida, all it takes is one positive test to derail the best of plans.

Even with rosters expanding to 17 to work around a positive COVID test, that margin of error might not be enough to avoid potentially sidelining an entire team. If that happens, whats the contingency? Would teams be forced to forfeit depending on how many tested positive? Would players hide COVID signs in order to potentially win a championship?

If younger players are reaching out to NBPA officials about insurance just in case something bad happens during a pandemic which, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, is happening theres a problem with the plan. These younger guys should be focused far more on getting better in the gym, not having those worst-case scenarios possibly floating in their heads. This does not even consider the fact that there is still no data about the long-term effects of catching COVID-19. Catching COVID could be a death sentence to the career of an NBA player, because even if they survive, it is unclear what this does to a persons body, which shouldnt be lost on anyone.

Donovan Mitchell has even reportedly voiced his concerns about soft tissue injuries after such a long layoff from actual basketball activities. Mitchells point makes a ton of sense considering that weve seen such injuries in the Bundesliga with younger guys like Borussia Dortmunds Gio Reyna, who hurt himself warming up for his first match back. Mitchell can earn a max-extension in the offseason, would it be worth it to him to go down to Orlando and play in a sequestered tournament that hes likely not able to win?

Disagreeing with Irving is fine, and those arguments and discussions are playing out within the confines of the players union as well. LeBron James believes they can continue having an impact on the world while playing basketball and using that platform to amplify the message as well. There are also significant short and long-term financial implications for players keeping the NBA from returning and impacting revenue from this season and beyond, as revenue tied to the restart is critical for the league moving forward without the salary cap cratering. As Austin Rivers said in response to Irving. he believes playing and receiving those paychecks to financially support the Black Lives Matter movement is an important part of how NBA players create change. There are quite literally millions of reasons for players to play, but also some very legitimate cases to be made for them not to and you can find those directly facing those questions on both sides of the coin.

As such, all of this requires a nuanced discussion many in the sports field arent equipped to handle, and as such the discourse around it all has been nauseating at best. Add in that its Irving, who leads the NBA in galaxy brain jokes at his expense thanks to previous flat earth commentary, leading the charge, and people are so much quicker to shout him down. However, dismissing Irving and others outright for voicing their concerns would be wrong, as there are legitimate reasons to worry about a restart, both from how it impacts the effectiveness of player activism to the very real health concerns that are yet to be fully sorted.

Dissecting the dual-genre design of Disintegration – Gamasutra

Posted: at 12:44 am

After years at Bungie art directing the Halo series, V1 Interactive CEO Marcus Lehto stepped away to find a new path in game development. When his team publicly resurfaced at last year's E3, they did so with Disintegration: a hybrid first-person/real-time strategy game that pits a small squad of robotic heroes against an array of armies in a bid to save humanity.

While Disintegration's not the first game to take a swing at the FPS/strategy hybrid (the Natural Selection series beat it to the punch), it has a particularly unique take on giving players control over its troopers: the grav cycle.

Instead of taking on the role of an omniscient, top-down general, or a trooper on the ground, players hop into the seat of a grav cycle, flying over their units and participating in combat while giving orders and chaining unit abilities together. It's a unique setup that, according to Lehto, emerged out of the game's setting, where most of humanity has had its consciousness uploaded to robot chassis.

And to top it off, like many other developers out there, Lehto and his colleagues at V1 had to ship Disintegration while the world was grappling with a global pandemic. Instead of banding together at an office, V1 Interactive had to get Disintegration ready for release from the comfort of their home offices.

With Disintegration finally ready for launch, we took a moment to catch up with Lehto and discuss what he and his colleagues learned blending two unique game genres together.

Can you walk us through the start of Disintegration's development, and what was the tipping point for thinking this first-person/strategy hybrid could work?

I had been working on the fiction of Disintegration for the game for quite a while and to the point where I was getting excited enough about it to start forming a small team to build a prototype. I knew at the early stage that I didn't want to just go out there and just pitch an idea in a PowerPoint presentation;I wanted to have something that was actually a hands-on demo of what our real design intent the vision for the game would be.

So I hired a couple college students who as contractors who could help me build this prototype, and we spent probably almost two years working on aprototype in Unity to construct this vision for the design of what we wanted to do with the game. It took a long time because we went through several different iterations, andthe evolution of that prototype changed dramatically over the course of that time, to where we landed onthis hybrid of first-person shooter and real-time strategy elements that we're ready to unleash to the world soon.

That process was slow. Like I mentioned, I wanted to take our time to make sure we got it right, because there were a lot of things to try to solve along the way that were super challenging for us.

Disintegration started out asa traditional RTS, and we moved to actually combining those first person elements and making that "hero" elementthe guiding force of the game. Then we added those real-time tactical elements into it in a way that was appropriate, like positioning the player in this vehicle we call a grav cycle over the battlespace and giving them omnidirectional movement, and having to really come up with brand new ways to command ground units that didn't overwhelm the player.

That whole iteration phase and that whole prototype period took about two years. It wasn't until I was sure that we had gotten it mostly right that I was comfortable actually getting out there in front of publishers to start pitching the game around.

Disintegration isn't the first time developers have tried to merge first-person movement and real-time strategy. What convinced you this hybrid approach could work?

Disintegration started out as a real-time strategy game. We realized that as an RTS by itself, it just wasn't going to be interesting enough to stand out in the crowd of all the other games like it. So that's when we turned the game camera into an active participant in combat. Our goal the whole time was to keep that first-person fluidity of real time action constant throughout the entire experience. None of the actions that you take as a commander in the sky require you to pause or or have any kind of stilted cadence in the midst of combat, so you can really do thisfluidly.

That required us to completely rethink "what are the most important parts of an RTS for us in our game?" and "what are the most important parts of an FPS, that actually work in this case and don't overwhelm the player with asking them to do too much at the same time?" We took a very deliberate approach to the way the grav cycle moves through the environment. It has omnidirectional movement: up, down, left, right, front, back. We give you a boost so you kind of have that first-person jump kind of feel, so you feel like you've got agency to evade enemy fire when you need it.

But then also we really spent a long time creating a brand new mechanic as to how you can interact with those ground units. Initially, you would select individual units and you would give them facing angles and a lot of complex stuff that was out too much in the micromanaging area. We decided that we had to let go of all that. We had to just step back from things and really just look at the bare essentials: what is the most important parts of RTS and FPS that would blend together and play nice together? Because it's not an easy problem to solve.

We ended up we ended up treating the ground units as a singular entity, so they behave contextually based on your commands that you give them. You can fire pulses from your grav cycle down onto the ground, and it will move your ground forces to that location and they will contextually take up positions of cover, or engage in combat with enemies nearby based on where you put them.

It's up to you as the commanderto put [your ground forces]in smart and safe places or strategic places to flank and that type of thing. We also give them the ability to prioritize target enemies or choose a specific objective in the environment to interact with in order to achieve a certain goal. And then in addition to that, each one of those units has a special ability. So they're kind of like chess pieces on on the combat field; you can use them to, you know, fire off a mortar strike or a slow field or a concussion grenade.

How do you create spaces that accommodate both the player on the grav cycle floating above, and the kind of jungle-gym like arenas that the units fight in?

It's about building a space that allows for movement of characters throughout it in very interesting ways and gives them plenty of opportunity for cover. That cover can be modified often in the midst of combat soyou can destroy cover, deny enemies their cover, and force them out of those areas to flee to other locations within the environment. You need multiple routes for the characters and [we designed]those routes so they can have interesting micro-battles by themselves in each one of the major combat pockets.

That's the first layer of things withground battle. And then of course your there's your grav cycle. You need to create a space that's interesting to navigate that gives you good sightlines, but also gives you good cover elements. So you can fly behind a section of trees or behind a rock, or a building that you can peek over it and fire down from above. Or you can flank around it while you set the enemies up with your units attacking them on the other side of it.

Once you start to understand that the grav cycle and its onboard abilities, its weaponsand support abilities arejust one part of very important equation. Your ground units are like your grenade that you throw in a first-person shooter,so think of those two things as one whole. They are an effective crew together when you start thinking of it like that from a design perspective.

It usually takes a player, I would guess, 5-10 minutes to start to wrap their heads around, you know, "oh, I can find this grav-cycling around, that's really cool." There's this major component here to this game, these ground units that in some missions, you'll have as few as two in some missions, you'll have as great as four.

And then you can, even in later missions, liberate other friendly units and they will temporarily join you. So you can amass kind of an army along with you as well, in some of these missions. So it's important to understand and to really embrace that Disintegration is a totally different game, not just this first person shooter or an RTS, where these things are combined in this unique space.

Is there anything in normal level design logic that doesn't work for this hybrid sort of space?

The toughest part actually was sightlines and what we can actually render from those perspectives, because oftentimes, players can get up to 16 to 20 meters high in an environment if you're flying up over something. In traditional shooters, we rely on the fact that the player is at a fairly constant sight line at ground level, and that we can include things in the distance more reliably and predictably. In this case, we have to scrap a lot of that and we had to rethink how we design the space as a result.

So that controls what our budgets are within a much greater sightline distance. It affects how AI react and behave at those greater distances as well. If you happen to fire out and shoot at those distances, it affects the lethality of each one of the the projectile rounds from our weapons. At what distance do we start decaying their their lethalityso we don't encourage players to sits from a distance and try to pop shot enemies from afar?

So weconstantly tried to also keep the grav cycle and the ground units as close together as possible throughout gameplay. So those ground units can fluidly move to your location andyou can get down close to them as well and take advantage of some of the ground cover that they also use. It was a really challenging kind of way to go about building environments. Especially natural environments proved to be some of the tougher ones for us to actually lay out in ways that was compelling for both level design and then for flow in the player experience.

It's been a few years since most games shipped with simultaneous multiplayer and single player modes. Most developers now are making camp firmly in one field of design or the other. Why did you choose to embrace the kind of single-and-multiplayer design that used to be so commonplace?

We started outsingle player only when we were initially designing in the game. It wasn't until we had solidified those core combat mechanics and that gameplay loop that we understood the multiplayer potential with the game.

It's true that a lot of games are multiplayer-only, especially nowadays. And we realize there's a huge void there as a result. It's an important void;I personally believe that games really benefit from having a solid narrative of a single player campaign that players can take at their own pace. It builds a a much deeper and a richer universe for the players to invest themselves in [that] carriesnot just through the campaignbut well into multiplayer as well, giving legitimacy for everything that lives withinthe game world.

So it's real important to me, first of all that, that games have a story. I love that aspect of it. And we love telling the story. The campaign has no shortage of awesome things to take the player through on a rollercoaster ride of missions. And some players, you know, had been really begging for a campaign to finally come outthat they can sink their teeth into, and I think they'll be pretty excited aboutwhat we're offering them.

So it seems like you and your team wanted to tackle all the challenges multiplayer offers? Server management, matchmaking, etc.?

Well, we cautiously tread into that because we were a small team. For most of the game development cycle, it was only 12 to 20 people. It's not until this last year that we've grown to about 30. So we rely heavily on the technology available from third parties. There's the Unreal 4 engine for the foundation of our game in general, for networking, and making sure that we can actually, you know, produce a game that's viable on Xbox, PlayStation andPC.

We're using third-party tools like PlayFab for the back end, networking, and matchmaking and all that. It was also essential for us to[...]make sure that we could make a solution there work.

It's because of those things like that, that I think we, as a small team, actually could do this. I mean, another big part of ittoois that as 30 peoplewe can really remain efficient. And hey, we're making games, we love making games and we're just having an awesome time making what we're building and, multiplayer was just a natural progression for it. We all loved what we were doing and the more we got excited about it, the easier it is to kind of continue to expand.

So we're talking over Zoom right now, each in our home offices, because a global pandemic happened. What's it been like finishing up development and releasing a game from home? What's changed working on games this way, compared to your long years working in offices?

This has been unprecedented. We have now been working from home for over 14 weeks. And it's been during the most difficult part of development cycle which is that end cycle where you're really honing in on performance on your individual platforms and solving some of those toughest to solve bugs, where you really need to be at the office plugged into special hardware that needs like IP addresses specifically for that location. And here we are like, "alright, now we all got to go home, how are we going to make that work?"

So for about a week, we were just scratching our heads: "I don't know how this is, I don't know if we're going to be able to make this happen." But we took one step at a time, we got up to maybe 30 percentefficiency by week two and 50 by week three, and then by after about four weeks, I think we're pretty much hitting on all cylinders again.

I'm real proud of the team to to see how they've kind of adapted to this new life that we're living right now and it seems like it's going to be quite a long time that we're going to be in the same situation.Through this we've actually been able to submit to certification for each one of the major platforms and pass through that and get ready for launch now. So it's crazy. This is definitely the most memorable dev cycle I've ever been through, and one I will never forget.

Recovering From COVID-19- The Long Road Ahead – Forbes India

It's time to forget the world as we knew it. What Covid-19has offered us is the opportunity to think long term. It will be a pity to let the crisis go waste.

It is evident that Covid-19 will transform the world in tectonic ways, just likeWorld War 2 brought in major cultural and economic transformation like new technologies and business models, including accelerated entry of women into the industrial complex as labour. Unfortunately, we are on shaky ground, because a large part of decision making is based on past examples and comparatives; past precedents will not guide our trajectory in the technology and knowledge-driven society of today. I am confident we will find viable new decision making models.

I shall focus on healthcare and pharma as together, they are one of the largest employers in the organised sector and will play a vital role in the post Covid-19 world. Like most countries, the pandemic has exposed serious lacunae and at the same time great opportunities for India.

1. Reimagining Healthcare Policy: In India, you cannot win an election by talking about health. Hence, our healthcare policies are non-existent or at best, archaic. But, as Bill Gates says, it is time we plan and practice our capability and preparedness with regular germ warfare games (just like military war games) with proper command structure. In the future, the greatest threat to the country or humanity will less likely come from war or nuclear bombs, but from germs. There have been three near-pandemics (Sars, Mers, Ebola) and one pandemic (Covid-19) within just 20 years. Hence,

a. We must change the archaic MCI rules to bring medical education standards to the 21st century, and allow private hospitals to give training like elsewhere in the world. This will bring down the cost of medical education drastically and increase manpower without any additional spend by the government. Our ratio of 0.7 doctors per 1,000 population is among the lowest in the world; and is primarily because of outdated rules restricting medical education and extremely high cost of private medical education.

b. As per WHO, India stands at 184 out of 190 countries in terms of healthcare spending as a percent of GDP, with a measly 1.15 percent of GDP spent bygovernment on healthcare; another 2.4 percent of the healthcare spending tab is taken up by the private sector or out of pocket expense. This pushes millions to bankruptcy from healthcare-related debts. On an urgent basis, thegovernment healthcare spending must increase substantially with the largest provision in the healthcare budget reserved for prevention and public health including building infrastructure.

c. Technology has changed the definition of teaching, including the number of teachers required. This should substantially improve quality, reach and as I have mentioned earlier, the cost of healthcare education.

d. We have to improve the ease of doing business and allow medical innovation to become mainstream. India is 63rd on the ease of doing business rankings among 190 countries, despite the fact that we are the home of IITs, IT and jugaad.

e. Of the total spending on healthcare, only seven percent is spent on preventive healthcare, while more than 80 percent is spent on treatment and cure as of FY17 (National Health Accounts). This has to change.

2. Building Capacity: This will be in the areas of infrastructure and manpower both.

While we always knew we were not equipped to handle a pandemic, Covid-19 has laid our failings threadbare.

The government cannot pass on the role to the private sector and has to spend more on health. Only 1/3rd of hospital beds are located in rural areas to serve 69 percent population, while 75 percent beds are in the private sector mostly in urban or semi urban areas. About 65 percent of all health expenditure in India (approx. 2.5 percent of GDP) is borne privately by households, despite the fact that they cannot afford private healthcare. In the post-Covid world, we need a robust public health system with private healthcare providers playing a secondary role. The government has to build more public hospitals and focus more on health management, rather than disease management.

Not only do we have a serious shortage of doctors but equally the shortage of other paramedical and technical staff like nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, etc., to manage various functions of the hospital. We need to create training programmes for them, which will also help solve the unemployment crisis.

The good thing is that in India, every family wants to make their child a doctor. We should turn this sentiment into a massive opportunity and open up medical education to fill the massive need of doctors.

3. Boosting Manufacturing:There is a palpable boycott-China sentiment the world over, which India can turn to its advantage, to become the healthcare manufacturing hub to the world. Unfortunately, even today, much of the key equipment for the Covid-19 crisistesting kits, personal protective equipment, ventilators, masksall come from China. We have only 25,000 ventilators in the country, whereas the requirement is ten times that. This could be a huge fillip to good quality Indian manufacturing.

India is totally dependent on China for 70 percent import of APIs; even as common a medicine like paracetamol is 100 percent imported from China. This is in contrast to the fact that pharma has been a silent winner for India.

We are the worlds largest supplier of generic drugs and control around 18 percent of the global market. India accounts for about 10 percent of worlds pharmaceutical production by volume but only 1.5 percent by value. This can change in a post-Covid-19 world. In fact, Doctors Without Borders, a humanitarian organisation, estimates that treatment of AIDS using generic Indian drugs is two to three times cheaper as compared to treatment using branded drugs.

Without health for all there is no progress.

One good thing that has come out of this horrible pandemic and all this suffering, is that finally, everyone is realising the importance of healthcare and application of technology like tele-health, telemedicine, remote connectivity and communication.

The old adage health is wealth stares at us in the face as we have to ramp up on the four pillarsnutrition, immunisation, prevention and adequate public healthcare facilities to build a post-CovidIndia.

Yes, We Mean Literally Abolish the Police – The New York Times

Posted: June 15, 2020 at 10:47 pm

Congressional Democrats want to make it easier to identify and prosecute police misconduct; Joe Biden wants to give police departments $300 million. But efforts to solve police violence through liberal reforms like these have failed for nearly a century.

Enough. We cant reform the police. The only way to diminish police violence is to reduce contact between the public and the police.

There is not a single era in United States history in which the police were not a force of violence against black people. Policing in the South emerged from the slave patrols in the 1700 and 1800s that caught and returned runaway slaves. In the North, the first municipal police departments in the mid-1800s helped quash labor strikes and riots against the rich. Everywhere, they have suppressed marginalized populations to protect the status quo.

So when you see a police officer pressing his knee into a black mans neck until he dies, thats the logical result of policing in America. When a police officer brutalizes a black person, he is doing what he sees as his job.

Now two weeks of nationwide protests have led some to call for defunding the police, while others argue that doing so would make us less safe.

The first thing to point out is that police officers dont do what you think they do. They spend most of their time responding to noise complaints, issuing parking and traffic citations, and dealing with other noncriminal issues. Weve been taught to think they catch the bad guys; they chase the bank robbers; they find the serial killers, said Alex Vitale, the coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College, in an interview with Jacobin. But this is a big myth, he said. The vast majority of police officers make one felony arrest a year. If they make two, theyre cop of the month.

We cant simply change their job descriptions to focus on the worst of the worst criminals. Thats not what they are set up to do.

Second, a safe world is not one in which the police keep black and other marginalized people in check through threats of arrest, incarceration, violence and death.

Ive been advocating the abolition of the police for years. Regardless of your view on police power whether you want to get rid of the police or simply to make them less violent heres an immediate demand we can all make: Cut the number of police in half and cut their budget in half. Fewer police officers equals fewer opportunities for them to brutalize and kill people. The idea is gaining traction in Minneapolis, Dallas, Los Angeles and other cities.

History is instructive, not because it offers us a blueprint for how to act in the present but because it can help us ask better questions for the future.

The Lexow Committee undertook the first major investigation into police misconduct in New York City in 1894. At the time, the most common complaint against the police was about clubbing the routine bludgeoning of citizens by patrolmen armed with nightsticks or blackjacks, as the historian Marilynn Johnson has written.

The Wickersham Commission, convened to study the criminal justice system and examine the problem of Prohibition enforcement, offered a scathing indictment in 1931, including evidence of brutal interrogation strategies. It put the blame on a lack of professionalism among the police.

After the 1967 urban uprisings, the Kerner Commission found that police actions were final incidents before the outbreak of violence in 12 of the 24 surveyed disorders. Its report listed a now-familiar set of recommendations, like working to build community support for law enforcement and reviewing police operations in the ghetto, to ensure proper conduct by police officers.

These commissions didnt stop the violence; they just served as a kind of counterinsurgent function each time police violence led to protests. Calls for similar reforms were trotted out in response to the brutal police beating of Rodney King in 1991 and the rebellion that followed, and again after the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. The final report of the Obama administrations Presidents Task Force on 21st Century Policing resulted in procedural tweaks like implicit-bias training, police-community listening sessions, slight alterations of use-of-force policies and systems to identify potentially problematic officers early on.

But even a member of the task force, Tracey Meares, noted in 2017, policing as we know it must be abolished before it can be transformed.

The philosophy undergirding these reforms is that more rules will mean less violence. But police officers break rules all the time. Look what has happened over the past few weeks police officers slashing tires, shoving old men on camera, and arresting and injuring journalists and protesters. These officers are not worried about repercussions any more than Daniel Pantaleo, the former New York City police officer whose chokehold led to Eric Garners death; he waved to a camera filming the incident. He knew that the police union would back him up and he was right. He stayed on the job for five more years.

Minneapolis had instituted many of these best practices but failed to remove Derek Chauvin from the force despite 17 misconduct complaints over nearly two decades, culminating in the entire world watching as he knelt on George Floyds neck for almost nine minutes.

Why on earth would we think the same reforms would work now? We need to change our demands. The surest way of reducing police violence is to reduce the power of the police, by cutting budgets and the number of officers.

But dont get me wrong. We are not abandoning our communities to violence. We dont want to just close police departments. We want to make them obsolete.

We should redirect the billions that now go to police departments toward providing health care, housing, education and good jobs. If we did this, there would be less need for the police in the first place.

We can build other ways of responding to harms in our society. Trained community care workers could do mental-health checks if someone needs help. Towns could use restorative-justice models instead of throwing people in prison.

What about rape? The current approach hasnt ended it. In fact most rapists never see the inside of a courtroom. Two-thirds of people who experience sexual violence never report it to anyone. Those who file police reports are often dissatisfied with the response. Additionally, police officers themselves commit sexual assault alarmingly often. A study in 2010 found that sexual misconduct was the second most frequently reported form of police misconduct. In 2015, The Buffalo News found that an officer was caught for sexual misconduct every five days.

When people, especially white people, consider a world without the police, they envision a society as violent as our current one, merely without law enforcement and they shudder. As a society, we have been so indoctrinated with the idea that we solve problems by policing and caging people that many cannot imagine anything other than prisons and the police as solutions to violence and harm.

People like me who want to abolish prisons and police, however, have a vision of a different society, built on cooperation instead of individualism, on mutual aid instead of self-preservation. What would the country look like if it had billions of extra dollars to spend on housing, food and education for all? This change in society wouldnt happen immediately, but the protests show that many people are ready to embrace a different vision of safety and justice.

When the streets calm and people suggest once again that we hire more black police officers or create more civilian review boards, I hope that we remember all the times those efforts have failed.
