My neighbours think Im losing it: From livestreams to virtual reality raves, how musicians are coping without touring – The Independent
Posted: at 1:31 am
Ive never done this before, so if Im a bit nervous, I apologise, says Coldplays Chris Martin, sitting by a piano scratching his head. Amazing Day? he says, peering at the thousands of live comments cascading down his screen. I cant remember that one. Its 16 March, the world is teetering on the brink of lockdown, and the Coldplay frontman is about to plunge into the unchartered waters of online concerts. Soon, the rest of the music world will follow.
In the early days of the pandemic, cancelled tours and festivals were breaking news. The Who arena shows postponed due to coronavirus; Taylor Swift cancels 2020 Lover tour dates due to coronavirus; Glastonbury 2020 cancelled due to coronavirus. And then, as the global crisis escalated, the tidal wave of postponements became too much to keep up with. Publications like ours stopped running them as news stories. Eventually, every single tour and every single festival had ground to a halt. And with them, a huge chunk of artists livelihoods.
Sad. Very, very sad. Thats how Phoebe Bridgers felt when she realised her summer gigs wouldnt be going ahead. I get 80 per cent of my self worth from interacting with tons of people on tour every night, she tells me. Rufus Wainwright agrees. I miss the travel and just being in my fans world, he says. American indie-rocker Lucy Dacus was planning on taking it easy this year, which still meant doing, like, five tours, she says. But none of them are happening. Its very affirming and powerful to stand in a room with friends and strangers, she continues, and look in the same direction, share in an experience, find joy. I miss being an excuse for people to come together.
Sharing the full story, not just the headlines
Its definitely not a great time to be in a profession that relies on international travel and large groups of people gathering together to sweat and shout over each other, adds Michael Lovett, who performs as synthpop solo outfit NZCA Lines, somewhat remorsefully.
Of course, it isnt just the emotional fulfilment of touring that artists are missing out on. The financial future of the music industry is potentially an arid one. Since the birth of streaming, live performances have become the most common income source for musicians. The live music sector is expected to lose 900m this year 81 per cent of its annual contribution to the UK economy, according to figures reported in The Guardian and touring musicians could lose up to two-thirds of their live income from cancelled festivals alone. The Musicians Union say their members have lost more than 21m in income since the start of lockdown.
Even as restrictions begin to ease up, its unclear when live music will be able to make a comeback. But given that US bioethicist Dr Zeke Emanuel told The New York Times that realistically, were talking fall 2021 at the earliest, it seems unlikely that well be cramming ourselves into sticky-floored venues (if, indeed there are many left after all this) or shuffling along the aisles to nosebleed arena seats, any time soon.
Still, artists are nothing if not creative. Theyre finding resourceful ways to satiate their fans appetite for live music. Following in Chris Martins footsteps (his live stream has been watched by over 2 million people), Lady Gaga curated the Together at Home concert, a six-hour marathon in which artists such as Billie Eilish, Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift and The Rolling Stones performed from the confines of their homes to raise money for the World Health Organisation. Christine and the Queens, AKA Heloise Letissier, performed on The Late Show from her windowsill in Paris, and posted nightly Instagram lives of stripped-back performances, dancing and writhing around the massive, wooden studio she had found herself quarantined in. Wainwright has been doing bathrobe recitals in his dressing gown every day. Folk singer Grace Petrie and her musician housemate Ben Moss posted a galvanizing A-Z of covers, starting with Sugababes About You Now and ending with Zombie by The Cranberries, before re-playing all 26 songs live while getting pissed and raising 11,000 for The Big Issue. And there are countless other examples of musicians getting inventive with streaming.
Phoebe Bridgers has been doing at-home gigs since April. The cool thing about them, she says, is you can connect with people so easily. I dont have to take off my pyjamas or carry a bunch of stuff to a venue. Then again, she adds, it can feel like Im just singing to myself, so she set up a sample pad of applause to trigger between songs. It helps a little. Im sure my neighbours think Im losing it. For her at-home gig for the music website Pitchfork, she asked for the proceeds to go to the Bail Project because the police combined with the privatised prison system in America is an extension of slavery. Any way we can disrupt that and free people is important to me.

When Lovett realised he wouldnt be able to tour his forthcoming album Pure Luxury, he considered delaying the release altogether. Instead, he decided to throw a virtual release party and perhaps offer a little escape. Whilst the inability to play live shows is obviously a real bummer, he says, its taken me online in a way Ive never been before. I like the experience of live streaming. Its weirdly intimate you start building relationships with the fans who become regulars. Its forced me into learning and playing more music both my own and covers than Ive ever done before. His album release party is going to be a combination of a real livestream show with production value (ie no home furnishings, decent audio) and something that approximates the social aspect of a real gig.
Other musicians have taken different routes. Electronic duo Prospa decided to throw a virtual warehouse rave for over 600 people. 3D artist Petter Schlander created a specially designed VR warehouse for the video stream, streamed live in full 360 to YouTube. The virtual warehouse space played host to an hour-long set from Prospa, their first since current circumstances cut their debut Leeds residency at Headrow House short. The idea, say Prospa, came out of the frustration of us being away from each other and wanting to do a live stream. The idea was to give back to all the people who were stuck at home wanting to rave and just have some fun. Schlander created the virtual warehouse using software called Cinema 4D. "I added details in the hangar such as a demolished floor and roof," he says, "aeroplanes that look like they're from a scrapyard (both close and far away from the camera to emphasise the sense of space) and of course the stage screens scattered around to bring the light show together. Rendering different loops of the light show, I then took and edited everything together and exported the final product from there.
Though shes spent plenty of time watching her musician friends play live streams, Dacus is yet to do so herself. I feel far less connected to my fans, but thats probably my fault for not showing up online more, she says, though shell remedy that on 17 June by taking part in Royal Albert Home, a run of shows put on by the famous London concert hall. The gigs are free, but the Royal Albert Hall, which like every other venue is currently closed, is asking viewers to consider donating.
Dacus has a magical memory of going to the Proms at the venue in 2016 where people were wearing gloves and hats and, having nabbed cheap tickets up in the gods, she listened to the symphony with my face pressed between the iron bars of the guard rail. She says she was honoured when RAH asked me to do a stream, although it will unfortunately lack all the pomp and charm that the Hall offers.
Another musician who is taking part in the Royal Albert Home series is Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess. Hes been throwing wildly popular listening parties on Twitter since March, during which people around the world listen to the same album at the same time (Roisin Murphys has been his favourite so far). Hes been working with his partner and his seven-year-old on his live sets, and sees one distinct advantage to virtual performances over IRL ones. At real gigs, theres always someone looking to borrow a phone charger and I have to keep a close eye on my snacks, he quips.
Tim Burgess has been throwing wildly popular listening parties on Twitter since March (Rex)
Lovett is looking on the bright side, too. From a musicians perspective, theres actually a lot of technical aspects that are preferable to a real gig, he says. You know exactly how its going to look and sound, and theres less variables than a real gig ie, no backline sharing, grumpy sound guys, weird room acoustics. On the downside, theres a high likelihood people will be listening through a phone or laptop speaker. From an audience perspective, thats not too satisfying but hey! No toilet queues, no overpriced beer, youre definitely not missing the train home... whats not to love?
Hes also felt more connected with his fans than he ever has done before. The fact that weve been getting almost all of our social interactions online has changed the way I think about using social media, he says. Ive had some really nice moments, after playing a song on Instagram Live, just chatting to people and answering questions sometimes for over half an hour. Often, its the ones Ive been dreading most that end up being the most fun.
As for the financial repercussions of a live music industry on hold, while they are no doubt severe, there is hope to be found. Not only are many people choosing to donate to venues that are struggling, but music fans have opted out of refunds for cancelled or postponed gigs. In the first month of or so of lockdown I did think that a large majority of gig-goers would want refunds, says Trevor Williams, the tour director of Tour Music Live, whos worked with artists such as Stormzy and Grace Jones. But when receiving ticket counts and updates, I was very surprised to see that the refunds across the tours we had were minimal.
Rufus Wainwright: Imiss the travel and just being in my fans world (Rex)
And yet the yearning for the return of tours, among both music fans and musicians, is strong. Last week, as lockdown began to loosen, Laura Marling left her house, took to the actual stage of Union Chapel, and played a gig. True, there was nobody in the audience, but it was the closest many music fans, myself included, have come to a real live show in many months and it was invigorating.
Perhaps thats the next step. As far as the next six months, I think if there was a way to outsmart this thing, a giant company would have thought of it by now, says Bridgers. No ones outsmarted it, exactly, but companies have certainly been savvy. In April, the computer game Fortnite hosted a live, in-game Travis Scott concert, during which the US rapper performed on a virtual stage built into the game world. 12.3 million concurrent players congregated online to watch the concert the games largest ever in-game gathering.
One things for sure, though this cant go on forever. Worst case scenario would be for this virus not to be cured and venues not being able to open back up, says Williams, as that would most definitely kill our touring industry. The bands hes working with are optimistic that they will be able to tour again in the near future, but they are also worried about not jumping the gun too soon, as they also feel the responsibility for the safety of their fans and touring crew. They are all most definitely missing interacting and putting on a show for their fans as the virtual and online performances, which are creative certainly, are not the same.
Lovett agrees. Nothing can replace the experience of performing or watching a live show, he says. I think we have to admit that its a communal experience in which the energy of an audience inspires the performers, and vice versa. Its a feedback loop. As a musician, no matter how normal you feel before a show, you are transformed when you get onstage.
Wainwright is sanguine. It will return in phases, he says. For now, we can only wait.

Winston Churchill was many things but ‘racist’ was not one of them | TheHill – The Hill
Posted: at 1:30 am
It is a sign of these times that a statue to the man who made it possible for people around the world to protest police brutality and racism has been boarded up to protect it from these very same protesters.
Anticipating further demonstrations, authorities in London have put a barrier around the statue to Winston Churchill in Parliament Square. Why? Because, as protesters spray-painted on the statue last week, Churchill was a racist.
This accusation crossed the Atlantic when Aliyah Hasinah of Black Lives Matter U.K. was a guest on National Public Radios 1A program. According to Hasinah, every statue to Britains wartime leader should be torn down because Churchill gave Hitler his ideas and therefore had ideologically started World War II.
Hasinahs complaint centered on Churchills brief support of eugenics, the idea that undesirable traits could be bred out of the human race. Eugenics, and the racial undertones that accompanied it, sprang from Social Darwinism. Its adherents included the novelist H.G. Wells, the economist John Maynard Keynes and, on this side of the Atlantic, Theodore Roosevelt and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
They werent alone. NAACP founder W.E.B. DuBois was a eugenicist. So were two of the worlds foremost campaigners for womens reproductive rights: Marie Stopes in Britain and Margaret Sanger in the United States.
Would anyone seriously claim that Keynes or DuBois or Sanger were ideologically responsible for Nazism and the horrors of World War II?
Charges of racism against Churchill go beyond his brief affiliation with the eugenics movement. To quell an Arab uprising in newly acquired lands after World War I, but without the troops to do the job, Churchill then Britains secretary for war and for air power suggested that the Royal Air Force drop gas bombs on rebel towns. To this day, it is unclear how far Churchill was willing to take what he called this experimental work. In his own words, his aim was to use gas bombs that would cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet would leave no serious permanent effects on most of those afflicted.
There is no way to justify this policy. But Churchills willingness to use poison gas hardly can be called racist when it is remembered that, as prime minister, he was fully prepared to unleash his countrys most lethal chemical weapons against the Germans, had they invaded Britain in 1940. The fact that the Nazi assault came to nothing doesnt detract from this point.
On the other side of the ledger, when British soldiers massacred nearly 400 people during a protest at Amritsar in India in 1919, Churchill, as war secretary, sacked the commanding officer, Reginald Dyer, and, in the House of Commons, condemned the use of military force against peaceful demonstrators for what it was and still is: terrorism.
India also is the place where Churchills critics accuse him not only of racism but of genocide. In 1943-44 a terrible famine hit the state of Bengal. Official estimates put the death toll at 1.5 million men, women and children; unofficial estimates put the figure at least twice as high.
What these critics conveniently forget when attacking the British response to this catastrophe is that a world war was taking place.
The Bengal famine resulted from a combination of poor harvests in India made worse by a major cyclone the year before. Previous food shortages had been alleviated by importing rice from Burma a recourse made impossible because the entire region was occupied by the Japanese army, which still aimed to conquer India.
Should more have been done to aid the Bengalis? Certainly. Could more have been done? That question isnt so easily answered. Throughout World War II, the Allies were confronted with a global shortage of shipping. Nowhere was this more acute than on the Southeast Asian battlefront, a theater of war that was as overlooked then as it is forgotten now. Hunger and starvation were twin features of this conflict in far too many places. To accuse Churchill of using this disaster to commit mass murder is a grotesque distortion of history.
It is easy to cherry-pick Churchills words to paint him in the worst possible light. His views often were controversial and they were public. Over the course of a very active life, he wrote 37 books, a record, according to one recent biographer, that surpasses the works of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens combined. Separately, his speeches fill another eight volumes. Add to that more than 700 magazine and newspaper articles.
But the fact remains that when the world was confronted with fascism, the most deadly incarnation of racism ever known, he stood against it. While he was not alone, even his political opponents recognized that he was the indispensable man. During the Munich Crisis, one Labour parliamentarian told him: You, or God, will have to help if this country is to be saved.
Britain and, eventually the world, was saved.
Leaders of the current protests around the world are reminding everyone that we need to remember the past as it really was. True enough. But they also ought to follow their own advice.
Kevin Matthews is a professor of modern European history at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. He is the author of Fatal Influence: The Impact of Ireland on British Politics, 1920-1925. He is writing a book about Winston Churchill and Ireland.

#ShutDownSTEM strike was a start, but real action on racism is needed – New Scientist News

Thousands of scientists participated in a strike against racism in science and academia on 10 June, with prominent academic institutions and scientific journals pledging their support. While these statements have been welcomed, many are keen for institutions to go further. People are tired of seeing organisations that have released statements, but with no action plan in place, says Jasmine Roberts at The Ohio State University.
Black scientists who spoke to NewScientist had a number of suggestions for further action by scientific journals that supported thestrike, such as inviting more Black academics to write review articles, peer review scientific papers and serve on editorial boards.
There are currently no Black editors on the Nature journal, says Natures editor-in-chief Magdalena Skipper. The implications of the lackof Black representation in our editorial staff are not lost on us. Cell, another scientific journal, published astatement acknowledging that none of its editors are Black.

Journals cant solve this problem alone, however. Several universities have released statements condemning racism, but many were criticised for their failure to explicitly mention Black people or to lay out plans for addressing inequalities.
There is mounting pressure for universities to acknowledge their racist histories and incorporate this into their curricula. An inquiry into thehistory of eugenics at University College London (UCL), for example, was criticised earlier this year for failing to investigate the issue in sufficient depth.
On 11 June, UCL announced it would immediately start reviewing the names of spaces and buildings that were named after two prominent eugenicists, Francis Galton and Karl Pearson.
But UCL is just one of many institutions worldwide that have buildings, lecture theatres or statues dedicated to scientists or other historical figures who held racist views or participated in racist acts. Universities should stop celebrating individuals that are known to be racist, says Cassandre Coles at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
To tackle racial bias and discrimination, academic institutions should penalise academics who make racist comments or exhibit racist behaviour, says Amber Lenon at Syracuse University in New York.
Universities should also be more deliberate about increasing their representation of Black people. Fewer than 1 per cent of university professors in the UK are Black, according to recent figures from theUKs Higher Education Statistics Agency. In the US, less than 5 per cent of full professors are Black.
Allocating more funding towards equality, diversity and inclusion work is an important starting point, says Madina Wane at Imperial College London. Currently, much of this work is performed, with little recognition, by underrepresented groups in addition to their actual contracted work, she says.
Overall, many Black scientists see the 10 June strike as the start of a process. No one group has a monopoly on intelligence, creativity and ideas, says Nira Chamberlain, president of the UKs Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. As a scientific community, we must work much harder to create a more diverse workforce from the top to the bottom.

L.A. Theaters Team Up For Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project Reading – Broadway World
Posted: at 1:29 am
IAMA Theatre Company is partnering with Celebration Theatre, DOMA Theatre Company, Echo Theater Company, Highways, The Inkwell Theater, Lower Depth Theatre, Skylight Theatre Company and the L.A. Stage Alliance to present a free, live Zoom reading of Vincent Terrell Durham's bold and timely new play Polar Bears, Black Boys & Prairie Fringed Orchids. To view the Juneteenth reading on Friday, June 19 at 6 p.m. PT, register at zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_K3JA0ksmTuODKuU3bL4tsQ.
The collaboration is part of the Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project, a nationwide movement by American theater companies striving to "change the world, one play at a time" in response to the current civil uprising in reaction to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others before them.
In Polar Bears, Black Boys & Prairie Fringed Orchids, a liberal white couple opens the doors of their renovated Harlem brownstone to host a cocktail party for a Black Lives Matter activist, his gay white lover and the mother of a slain 12-year-old Black boy. A night of cocktails and conversation sparks emotional debates on topics ranging from underweight polar bears and Lana Turner to saving the planet, gentrification, racial identity and protecting the lives of Black boys.
The reading will be directed by Andi Chapman and feature IAMA company members Brandon Scott and Christine Woods, alongside Tesiana Elie, Todd Grinnell, Garrett Mercer, Kacie Rogers and Sheldon White.
According to Aldo Billingslea, who launched the Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project to center Black theater artists and new voices and address systemic racism in the theater industry, this joint effort between theaters is exactly what theater is meant to do: unite for change, respond to the current moment, raise awareness and resources to support marginalized communities, and amplify the voices of artists of color. "With a perfect blend of wit, pathos and humor, [Polar Bears] speaks to some of the most pressing subjects of our time - gentrification, white fragility, the sustainability of the planet, the Black Lives Matter movement and police violence against Black bodies," he said in a press release.
The play was co-commissioned and developed by PlayGround and Planet Earth Arts and was a finalist for the 2019 NNPN National Showcase of New Plays.
Durham is a Los Angeles-based scriptwriter, author and poet and the author of ten plays, including The Fertile River, about the tragic history and legacy of eugenics in North Carolina, and A Post Racial America.

Saharan Dust Could Spread to Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and US Into Next Week – The Weather Channel
Posted: at 1:28 am
An outbreak of dust from the Sahara Desert could spread to the Caribbean by this weekend, and it might reach the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the United States next week.
Known as the Saharan Air Layer (SAL), this dry dust plume commonly forms from late spring through early fall and moves into the tropical Atlantic Ocean every three to five days, according to NOAA's Hurricane Research Division (HRD).
You can see in this animation from Tuesday how an expansive area of dust has moved from Africa to the central and eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean.
Saharan dust tracks as far west as the Caribbean Sea, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico each year a 5,000-mile-long journey. The dust particles can contribute to hazy skies at times during the summer in the Caribbean Islands, South Florida, the Florida Keys and the U.S. Gulf Coast. The dust can also cause toxic algal blooms in the Gulf of Mexico, according to NASA.
The HRD says the Saharan Air Layer is typically located between 5,000 and 20,000 feet above the Earth's surface. It is transported westward by bursts of strong winds and tropical waves located in the central and western Atlantic Ocean at altitudes between 6,500 and 14,500 feet.
The National Weather Service in Puerto Rico noted on Monday that a weak Saharan Air Layer was creating hazy skies and providing dry air to their area early in the week.
By later this week and especially this weekend, a more concentrated area of dust is expected to spread toward the Caribbean. You can see this in the forecast below from NASA's GEOS-5 model, which shows an expansive area of dust moving into the Caribbean by Sunday.
That dust might ultimately reach the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the United States by early next week.
The National Weather Service in Houston mentioned that their area could see red skies at sunrise and sunset next week because of the dust. This could also happen on other parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast, depending on the exact path of the dust and how much of it spreads that far west.
Given the SAL is most common during hurricane season, research has been done on how it can affect the development of tropical storms and hurricanes. According to NOAA, some of the potential impacts to tropical development caused by the SAL include:
- The dry air can create downdrafts (sinking air) around tropical storms and hurricanes, which may result in the weakening of tropical cyclones.
- Strong winds associated with the SAL can contribute to increased vertical wind shear the change in wind speed with height which makes the environment hostile for tropical cyclone development.
- The role dust plays in tropical storm and hurricane intensity is not known. However, some research says it might impact cloud formation.
The early part of hurricane season is typically quiet in the tropical Atlantic. But this outbreak of dust along with unfavorable upper-level winds will likely put a lid on any significant tropical development in the near-term future.

When Are Popular Vacation Spots in the Caribbean and Mexico Reopening? – InsideHook

Craving a beach vacation? Mexico and the Caribbean are slowly but surely reopening.

Whenever tragedy befalls an area that relies on tourism to keep its economy humming, the best way to jumpstart that area again is simple: more tourism. After Hurricanes Irma and Maria roared through the Caribbean in 2017, leaving behind an estimated $157 billion in damages, the quickest road to recovery was visitors arriving the following spring, to sleep, eat and spend money in Anguilla, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
In the age of COVID-19, though, the way forward isnt so clear. GDP losses in the Caribbean and Mexico have been catastrophic, and even the regions Small Island Developing States (a U.N. designation) have seen billions of dollars in losses this year. There has been no easy fix; Americans are understandably wary of overseas travel, and even for those willing to take the risk, international flights have been an unreliable, overly expensive mess for weeks now, with unprecedented percentages of routes cancelled and planes grounded.
There are some emerging signs, though, that some of the Western Hemispheres most popular vacation spots might be opening up and airline service is responding in kind. Consider the June opening dates of a number of Caribbean islands, including U.S. Virgin Islands (June 1), Antigua and Barbuda (June 4), St. Lucia (June 4), Aruba (June 15), Jamaica (June 15) and St. Barths (June 22). As Frommers details, the specifics of reopening are unique to each island, but in general, self-quarantine periods are being replaced with health screenings and temperature checks. Some nations, like the Bahamas, are enforcing face masks. In Aruba and St. Lucia, hotels are being held to increased hygiene standards. To enter St. Barths, visitors must show the results of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the trip.
It all adds unwanted complications to island life, but thats a price many travelers are willing to pay. And airlines, desperate in their own way, know it. American Airlines, Air Canada, JetBlue and Southwest are all ramping up routes in the month of June. Other islands to keep an eye on for July reopenings include Barbados, Grenada, St. Martin, and Turks and Caicos. Mexico is technically open to American travelers if they arrive by sea or air, but popular resort areas like Los Cabos and Quintana Roo have tabled their reopening plans for now, following a recent wave of fresh cases.
