The poll, conducted May 1-13 and released Tuesday, shows that 47 percent of Americans say abortion is morally wrong and 44 percent say its morally acceptable. Although neither percentage is a record, it continues a two-decade trend: The percentage of those who say its morally wronghas been higher than the morally acceptable position every year since the question was first asked in 2001.

Last year, 50 percent said abortion was morally wrong and 42 percent morally acceptable. When the question was first asked in 2001, 45 percent said it was morally wrong and 42 percent morally permissible.

The poll also shows that on four family-related issues divorce, sex between unmarried individuals, having a baby outside of marriage, and polygamy a record-high percentage of Americans say each one is morally permissible.

Arecord-high of 77 percent say divorce is morally permissible and a record-low of 18 percent say it is morally wrong. Four percent say it depends on the situation. When the poll was first conducted in 2001, 59 percent said divorce was OK, 28 percent said it was wrong and 12 percent said it depends.

A record-high (72 percent) also say sex between an unmarried man and woman is morally permissible, with 27 percent saying its wrong. (In 2001, 53 percent said it was morally acceptable and 42 percent said it was morally wrong.)

On the subject of having a baby outside marriage, a record-high 66 percent say its morally acceptable and a record-low 32 percent say its wrong. (In 2001, 50 percent said it was wrong and 45 percent said it was OK.)

On polygamy, a record 20 percent say its morally acceptable and 78 percent say its wrong. (In 2003, when the question was first asked, 7 percent said it was permissible.)

Acceptance of gay and lesbian relations (66 percent) is one percentage point from a record high (67 percent, set in 2018).

Meanwhile, a record-low 54 percent of Americans say the death penalty is acceptable and a record-high 40 percent say its wrong.

Abortion remains the most ideologically polarizing issue asked about, with 70% of liberals and 18% of conservatives classifying it as morally acceptable, Gallups Megan Brenan wrote in anonline analysis. Gay or lesbian relations and teenage sex are the next most divisive issues, with acceptability gaps of 41 and 40 percentage points, respectively.

Gallup analyzed public perception on a myriad of other issues including birth control, drinking alcohol, gambling, smoking marijuana, cloning humans and more. View the full results here.

The survey was based on interviews with 1,028 adults.

Remember to find a reason to smile – News from southeastern Connecticut – theday.com

Posted: at 6:58 am

First and foremost, I would like to extend my congratulations to my fellow classmates for all of the hard work that we celebrate today. As Drake and Soulja Boy said in a freestyle six years ago, We Made It.

Today is one of the most important days of our lives. As we gather here together to celebrate more than a decade of learning, were surrounded by all of the people who taught and inspired us. Parents, teachers, Fitch faculty, thank you for guiding us to this very special moment.

Class of 2020, I wish for each and every one of you to pursue the passions that make you most happy. In a chaotic and unpredictable world, as we have been witness to during recent times, I want everyone to find a reason to breathe in and smile. Maybe today its learning a new instrument, working out, or going out on a hike with loved ones.

For tomorrow it may be creating a new invention, starting a company, or discovering a cure to the diseases that wreak havoc on our lives. Whatever you are passionate about for the future, I encourage you to dream on. These dreams are your fuel for making it to the end of the day, exhausted in bed knowing that you have given 110%.

Russian-American author Ayn Rand, in her novel "Atlas Shrugged," emphasizes the purpose of life as being the pursuit of ones happiness. Rand writes, Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserve and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real... it is possible... it's yours.

Despite being Robert E. Fitch High Schools Class of 2020, (a class with perfect vision of course), I dont think any of us foresaw back in September, a graduation, never mind our final spring semester together, as it is today. Lets applaud those parents, staff, and faculty that put in countless hours of work to make sure that this graduation could still be special.

Class of 2020, weve just completed a great journey together, and from the bottom of my heart I wish you all the very best on your future endeavours. Thank you.

(William Miner is the Fitch High School Class of 2020 Salutatorian.)

Shockingly, Law School Named For Affirmative Action Opponent Bad At Race And Diversity – Above the Law

Posted: at 6:58 am

(Photo via Facedbook)

As law schools put together their responses to what has clearly become an historic juncture in the countrys long, ignominious history with race, its worth remembering that a law school at a public university went out of its way to rename itself after a guy who thought the Voting Rights Act was a perpetuation of racial entitlement and cited debunked theories about black people needing slower-track school from the bench. At a moment when most institutions are taking a hard look at their role in the wider landscape of racial injustice, its safe to say that ASSLaw is not.

ASSLaw, of course, is the George Mason University School of Law, which renamed itself the Antonin Scalia School of Law at the behest of a wealthy donor under admittedly shady circumstances without taking a second to consider the truly fitting acronym theyd bestowed upon themselves. They attempted to rebrand as the Antonin Scalia Law School, but by then wed all embraced the ASSLaw moniker.

And it seems that the school is content to follow their namesakes lead when it comes to race and diversity.

The school is a mere 2 percent black, an eye-popping number for a public school in Virginia. On a recent conference call discussing the issue, the Dean of Admissions cited the old canard of high academic standards as the reason why the school does not have more black students. Its a justification that would be news to UVA (5.7 percent), Georgetown (9.2 percent), and George Washington (7.8 percent), all demonstrably superior academic institutions that seem to have no problem finding black law students.

In fairness, part of the schools problem is the name itself. When the school made the shift to align itself ideologically with a jurist who spent his tenure pushing racist, sexist, and homophobic tropes onto the national stage we all knew it would create a self-selection diversity problem as minority students inched away from the barely top 50 program when so many alternatives exist. George Masons president, Angel Cabrera, defended the name change at the time with words that were either tragically ironic or nakedly cynical, We must ensure that George Mason University remains an example of diversity of thought, a place where multiple perspectives can be dissected, confronted, and debated for the benefit and progress of society at large. What he got was a school systematically erasing actual diversity. But more conservative professors whose scholarship might not land them work elsewhere get to call the school home and thats a kind of diversity, if a racist one.

But even if the name greatly diminished the pool of black applicants, the attempt to pin the lack of diversity on high academic standards hits at the core of the schools philosophical problem. Its not just that the school doesnt seem to care about diversity, its that they are quick to blame their own institutional shortcomings on black people themselves. As they see it, ASSLaw hasnt failed to recruit students the students failed to be good enough for ASSLaw. Its an exercise in victim blaming that guarantees the school will remain mired at the bottom of diversity rankings until it undergoes a fundamental mindset shift.

For the minority students still braving the ASSLaw ranks, the school isnt performing much better. With Eugene Volokh tossing around racial slurs and throwing tantrums when hes called out for it, you can imagine what a faculty built around Volokh Conspiracy bloggers can get up to. In response to complaints about both professors and students saying unconscionable stuff in class, the school formed a Classroom Dialogue Committee. That certainly sounds like a step in the right direction, but were hearing that many of the professors on the committee have complaints against them for inappropriate comments. Its like letting the inmates run the Ayn Rand School for Objectivist Studies.

And since ASSLaw is just Fosters Home For Right-Wing Troll Friends, the school that cant find any way to admit more black people did manage to bring in Ginni Thomass infamous aide Crystal Clanton who we last caught up with when she was texting co-workers that:

I HATE BLACK PEOPLE. Like fuck them all ... I hate blacks. End of story.

Despite this being a well-known incident that led to even Turning Point USA distancing themselves from her, ASSLaw admitted Clanton in another display of the schools deep commitment to promoting an inclusive atmosphere for professional education.

But Clanton has learned to like Clarence Thomas so I guess racism is solved.

At the end of the day, ASSLaw is now the conservative ideology factory that we thought it would be. But George Mason isnt a private school. A public school that cant muster a black student body of more than 2 percent in a state thats roughly 19 percent black is objectively failing at its mission to serve the people of Virginia.

There are definitely bigger issues in Virginia right now than law school administration, but thats no excuse for continued inaction. Someone in state government needs to step in and be the adult in the room because the stunted adolescence of libertarianism certainly isnt producing any leadership from within the school. This is the largest public research university in the state! And yet the law school seems more focused on providing a mill for conservative academics to publish hot takes than building the profession.

Fix it.

Coupa acquires BELLIN, targeting treasury management (Part 2: TMS Market, Competitors and TAM / Market-Sizing Considerations) – Spend Matters

Posted: at 6:56 am

Last week, Coupa made the surprise move to push its business spend management suite into an adjacent space that no other source-to-pay, procure-to-pay or AP automation solution vendor has gone before: the world of treasury and specifically, treasury management systems (TMS).

See initial Spend Matters Nexus and PRO coverage here:

By acquiring BELLIN to compete in the TMS world, Coupa will ostensibly fortify its position in being able to sell to CFOs as much as CPOs with a broader value proposition (including broader-based payment capabilities than all of its procurement/AP/spend peers can support, at least without a TMS partnership and development of new combined process flows).

But beyond the expanded CFO value proposition and B2B payment intersections, theres quite a bit beneath the surface with a TMS that could create additional value propositions linked with transactional procurement, supplier management, risk management, invoicing and payment capabilities.

This Spend Matters Nexus brief provides a quick overview of treasury management system market dynamics, including buyer trends and requirements.

It also offers insight into the competitive positioning of some of Coupas key competitors in this new market segment, including CGI, FIS (Integrity and Quantum), Ion (City Financials, IT2, ITS, Openlink, Reval, Treasura, Wallstreet Suite), Kyriba, GTtreasury (GTreasury/Visual Risk), Oracle and SAP.

Lastly, the brief shares TAM estimates (total addressable market) for the treasury management and B2B payments market.

The final installment of this three-part Nexus series will examine potential competitive landscape implications for Coupas competitors in S2P and P2P, including SAP Ariba, Oracle, Basware, GEP, Jaggaer and Ivalua.

We also will explore the converse: Will treasury management systems providers push into the procurement and spend applications world?

Jason Busch is Managing Partner of Azul Partners Investor Advisory Group. He works with sponsors, CEOs and boards on data-driven due diligence, M&A and strategy. Jason is also the lead author of Spend Matters Nexus, a private newsletter and subscription service. Disclosure: Azul Partners provided due diligence services to Coupa as part of this transaction.

Archerhub Launches ALVUS TMS to help Carrier Partners Grow their Businesses – DC Velocity

Posted: at 6:56 am

Asset-based digital freight broker Archerhub today announced the availability of the ALVUS Carrier TMS, designed to help its network of carriers automate time-consuming back-office operations and focus on the growth of their businesses.

ALVUS (Archerhub Logistics Value Utilization Solution) features AI-enabled technology designed to automate back-office accounting and management operations, streamlining the manual processes that take away from business development and growth activities. In addition, ALVUS cloud-based collaborative dispatch management platform is designed to bring main stakeholders together and collectively execute the best dispatch option possible regardless of office and truck location.

Small and midsize carriers want to make the best operational decisions but often lack the proper tools to compete with mega-carriers, said Nick Darmanchev, founder and CEO of Archerhub. We get itas a fleet owner myself, I am keenly aware of the challenges that owner operators face in getting bogged down with admin and process. ALVUS was developed specifically to help streamline those processes.

For example, ALVUS can automatically issue permission for trusted drivers to issue their own comchecks or EFS checks for a lumper via the drivers mobile application. When the driver issues a comcheck, the right journal entry is registered on the accounting ledger which releases the accountant from entering a manual journal entry, all while freeing the dispatcher from engaging with the driver about the lumper.

With ALVUS TMS, carriers can book loads, upload the bill of lading and proof of delivery, issue comchecks that auto-populate to the balance sheet and create pay stubs automatically, continued Darmanchev. Automating these processes will help carriers free up dispatchers to work smarter and faster.

ALVUS TMS features:

Automated Billing: Carriers no longer need to spend hours to match BOLs and PODs to loads. The driver executes via the mobile application at the load level and when completed and accounting-approved, an invoice is sent to the customer with all the necessary paperwork attached.

Centralized Database:One centralized platform to manage all trucks, drivers, and loads while streamlining accounting and invoicing processes at the entity level.

Simplified Payments:Finance and accounting features that automate pay stubs and billing to make sure drivers get paid the right amount, every time. Every time dispatchers enter a customer, it is instantly recorded with the accounting platform of choice. When an advance to a driver is issued, it will automatically deduct from the drivers pay.

Automated Truck Postings:ALVUS integrates with DAT and truckstop.com, eliminating the need to manually post and refresh postings every time trucks are empty. For example, when a load is scheduled to be delivered in three days, ALVUS will post the available capacity three days in advance in order to secure the best load opportunity.Learn more about ALVUS TMS HERE.

Archerhubs digital marketplace for truckload freight connects shippers and carriers through Archerhubs mobile app or online platform, providing instant quotes, full transparency, real time visibility, and automated customized reports.

Axele TMS allows small, midsize FTL carriers to improve load planning and communications, increase profit – The Trucker

Posted: at 6:56 am

DALLAS Global optimization intelligence company Optymhas launched a new transportation management software (TMS) designed specifically for small and midsize truckload carriers that operate five to 50 trucks.

Axeleoffers predictive analytics that automate many of a trucking firms core functions including load planning, matching drivers to loads and customer communications to increase revenues and profitability. The software includes a mobile app for drivers that improves communications between headquarters, drivers and customers.

Optym, which has developed optimization solutions for some of the worlds largest and most respected airlines and trucking companies, leveraged its experience and proprietary algorithms to bring an unprecedented level of technology, innovation and optimization to the full truckload industry through Axele.

Small and midsized firms dont have the staff or the budget for costly TMS solutions that arealso difficult to install and maintain, but they have a real need for intelligent solutions that will help them operate more efficiently and make better, more profitable decisions that are based on data, said Vic Keller, CEO of Optym. We took the best of what Optym does for airlines and large trucking companies and created software that is effective, affordable and almost effortless to implement.

The company states that Axeleis affordable, installs in a single day and can be easily used by dispatchers and drivers. In addition, Optym offers a 30-day free trial that allows carriers to test-drive features normally reserved for premium service subscribers. After 30 days, users can continue to use the free standard version of Axele or opt for the professional version, which provides access to the full set of features and functionalities.

In the trucking business, its really easy to lose money if you dont have the right TMS to manage your business, said John Ganiev, owner of Dream Transportation LLC in Allentown, Pennsylvania.I can open up Axele and figure out exactly what is going on in my business by just looking at the dashboard. Axele allows load creation with just two clicks. We also find it very useful regarding compliance. We can make accurate decisions satisfying FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) rules and drivers preferences.

Axele allows dispatchers at smaller FTL carriers to be more efficient and profitable because they can automatically search load boards, such as DAT and TruckStop, to find the most profitable loads that make sense for their company, shippers and drivers. Carriers can also easily connect to electronic logging devices (ELDs), market rates, maps and their internal accounting systems, among other databases. In addition, Axele can help improve driver retention and job satisfaction by finding optimal loads for drivers based on their locations, preferences, deadhead travel and hours of service.

Keeping drivers happy and ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction are very important to carriers, Keller said.Axele allows carriers to improve both, giving all the parties involved dispatchers, drivers and customers better communications and greater visibility into the processes and the ability to trace their loads.

Carriers can communicate seamlessly to drivers via the mobile app on assigned loads as well as invoicing and driver settlements. Axele also provides carriers the ability to communicate with their customers in real time about a loads location and estimated time of arrival, as well as by sharing when and where a truck will be available.

All information is displayed on a live dispatch board, allowing carriers to track and manage all their assets, including drivers, tractors, trailers and loads, in real time. The portal also allows for the monitoring of drivers schedules and notifies planners and dispatchers of driver availability and location.

Interview: Steve Guttenberg on Into the Dark’s Good Boy, Home for the Holidays, and His Craft – The Mary Sue

Posted: at 6:56 am

Growing up with older brothers meant that I was personally subjected to a lot of movies from the 70s and 80s to fall in love with. In many of those films was Steve Guttenberg. I would eventually find my own Guttenberg comfort movie in Home for the Holidays, but the point is that Steve Guttenberg has a legacy that is impactful, fun, and leaves many of his fans with different movies to talk about.

ThePolice AcademyandShort Circuitstar talked with me about his upcoming project: Good Boy, an entry in Hulus Into the Dark anthology series of feature-length horror stories. In this installment, Guttenberg plays an editor for a local paper that is going digita,l and the excitement for it came from Jason Blum asking and working with Judy Greer!

The Mary Sue: I really enjoyed Good Boy because I thought it was a fun take on the series. I enjoyed that it was a bit more fun, and I really liked your character, as a writer myself. So, I wanted to know what kind of drew you into the Into the Darkseries in the first place and, in particular, this character?

Steve Guttenberg:Well, Jason Blums office called us and asked if I was interested in doing one of his episodes, and I read it and I thought that Aaron and Will Eisenberg did a good job making a derivative idea into something different. And I liked Tragedy GirlsandPatchworkfrom Tyler MacIntyre, and I was really excited about working with a talented actress like Judy Greer, so I accepted the part.

TMS: And yeah, youve been having a really fun kind of (well I guess with my family) resurgence, but we watch Holey Moley, so I also love that this movie, in particular, is more of like a character that is new and refreshing versus the exaggeration of yourself that youre playing on Holey Moley as the diving judge, and so, is that fun to kind of have this new wave of fans recognize your work?

Guttenberg: You know I dont notice any of that. You know, my job is to be creative every day. So I take classes every day: dance, theatre, movement, stage fighting whether its a mask class, singing, or dancing and so my day, since I was twelve years old, has been being creative ten hours a day. An actor can only do what hes offered, and I just look at it as doing my work.

With Holey Moley,I wanted to create an angry character. Im not playing myself at all. Im playing this sort of pompous actor who has a real anger in him for this diver, Joey, which is ridiculous and thats what makes it funny, and then to play Don, which is a supporting role the idea of a supporting role is to make the lead look good. Thats your only job. If you make the lead look good, then youve done a good job being a supporting character. If youre going to play Polonius, you have to make everybody else look goodsame thing with playing Guildenstern. You have to make Hamlet look good. So, my job was to make Judy look good.

TMS: And you do a great job with it.

Guttenberg: Thank you I appreciate it.

TMS: I love both your movies and Judy Greers, so this movie is very exciting, so do you hope that this I feel like the Into the Darkseries has a younger audience who likes horror movies and the series is just a condensed version, do you hope that it kind of brings younger audiences into your older work that they might not have seen yet?

Steve Guttenberg:No, not really. My job is to be the best actor that I can, and its show business. Im part of the show. My job is to act, sing, dance, move, and create a character or characters that support the piece, that serves the play. I have no control over the business, and so I dont pay much attention to it. And I dont pay much attention to the fans because theyre a capricious group. One day they like you, one day they dont. Im sure youve seen it in your writing. Someone might love you and then move on to another writer, so I dont pay much attention to the fans. I think theyre people just like me.

TMS: Thats really interesting because I ask that question a lot and normally theyre like I hope it does this and this maybe thats why because like, I was tweeting about getting to talk to you today and was saying how I have to find some way of bringing up Home for the Holidaybecause thats my favorite comfort movie and I think now that maybe thats why your movies feel that way to people? Because its not so much a I love every single thing Steve Guttenberg has ever done but its, instead, that every character you bring to life has this earnest nature to them.

Guttenberg: Well, I want to bring the truth into everything I do, and thats why we admire actors, because theyre truthful. And that degree of actors are truthful and through that earnestness, I believe that I serve the play and lots of good things can come from that. Its all about creating a part of the painting that the director and producer envisioned. And if you can make it better, then thats great, but I dont focus at all on the result. I dont read reviews. Im just doing my job, and I do my job the best I can.

TMS: Do you think thats something thats important for a lot of creatives to remember now? Because so much of everything is online and what people think and what people are saying instead of just honoring the art and putting your whole self into something rather than worrying about what people are going to say about it?

Guttenberg: Yeah, nothing is stronger than an idea whose time has come. And before its time has come, everybody is against it. If you notice, three years ago Colin Kaepernick went on one knee and was basically fired for it. And now the NFL is walking that back and saying, Maybe we made a mistake. The same as with all the other companies. So, its about when an ideas time has come. So, if you believe in your art, or your cause, considering what other people think is ridiculous. You have to notice the world you live in, but it doesnt matter what anybody thinks because they spend about two seconds on what youre doing and then they move on, but youre spending a lifetime on your cause.

TMS: Thats fascinating because, like you said, its one moment and then its gone, and so much of peoples outrage or commentary on art and movies is for a moment, and then it passes, but its the movies that certain people cling to that have this power. And with actors like yourself, its really fascinating to me because, like I said earlier, you have so many movies that have that resonance and so much of it is because of your approach to acting and your telling of these stories.

Guttenberg: Yeah, you know, of course, you have to be lucky enough to have paints that are beautiful and a canvas that is beautiful and something to paint that is beautiful, and I think that the artist has a signature and thats what creates an icon. Its the expectation and fulfillment of what that artist brings.

TMS: As kind of a final thought (Im very excited for people to watch this), what do you hope to do next when everything calms down and what stories do you want to bring your truth to in the future?

Guttenberg: Oh, I dont know. I really dont know. Im writing a play right now for New York, and hopefully, that gets done. But creatively, I just do the same thing every day. Serve my family and my friends, I take classes and improve my art and my instrument, and enjoy a great quality of life.

Good Boy is out now, and if you like comedy, this is a fun foray into the comedic horror genre with great performances and a fun twisting narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire thing! Definitely check it out, and I, personally, cant wait for more Guttenberg on Holey Moleyor to see that play hes working on!
