Resident Evil games on Steam no longer have ultra-long, randomly capitalized titles – PC Gamer

Posted: June 12, 2020 at 3:47 am

Resident Evil is called Biohazard in Japan, which used to be a bit of trivia that fans of the series could enjoy knowing. And then a few years ago it became hard not to know, because nearly every Resident Evil game on Steam included both the English and Japanese titleswith wildly inconsistent use of lowercase and capitalized letters to boot.

A few examples:

The funniest consequence of the dual-name policy was seen in the Steam title for Resident Evil 7. Cutely, Capcom made the subtitle of RE7's English localization "Biohazard," and the subtitle of the Japanese version "Resident Evil." Since the Steam title included both, the full game name in our Steam libraries was: RESIDENT EVIL 7 biohazard / BIOHAZARD 7 resident evil.

(At least they didn't go with the stylized versions that appeared on the box art, or it would've been RESIDENT EVII_. biohazard. / BIOHA7.ARD resident evil.)

As of yesterday, our library organization nightmare is over. As noticed by Reddit poster Comboxer, the titles all changed this week, and now include only the localized English game names. The playful use of caps lock has also been removed:

Finally, the Steam libraries of Resident Evil fans don't look like a brand manager's acid trip. (Although I like to imagine that Capcom had a 100-page document that somehow explained all the erratic capitalization and other inconsistencies in a sensible way. It's unlikely.)

Reddit posters speculated that the ability to add localized game titles must've recently been added to Steam, and they're correct. I asked Valve, and was pointed to this Steamworks update from last December.

"Further to the goal of deepening Steams localization support, if you have translated versions of your game name Steam can now support showing the name in one or more languages," reads the post.

That regional titles only became an option at the end of 2019 illustrates how quickly Steam's global reach has grown over the past five years. And that growth has presented Valve with issues far greater than the need for better localization options. At the moment, Valve is quietly navigating regulations in China to launch a version of Steam there (which may not be a good thing for the growing Chinese indie scene.)

Commonwealth Games: Athletes to be allowed to take a knee in protest, says Games chief – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 3:47 am

(Reuters) - Athletes competing in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England will be allowed to take a knee in support of worldwide anti-racism movements, competition organisers said.

Several major sports organisations have moved to allow protests at their events following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died on May 25 after a white policeman knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed athletes are still banned from protesting at the Olympic Games but Commonwealth Games organisers said they would respect people's rights to voice their opinions.

"The movement is challenging all institutions to really look introspectively at what we can do to be more fair, more free, have better equality. Sport is no different," Commonwealth Games chief executive David Grevemberg told reporters on Thursday.

"We are comfortable with the uncomfortable conversation and we need to embrace it. We maybe have more responsibility because of the shared history of the Commonwealth so we need to find solutions that dont build walls but rather build bridges.

Grevemberg said athlete protests have long been a part of the Commonwealth Games, citing the example of former Australian sprinter Cathy Freeman, who wrapped herself in the Aboriginal flag after winning the 200 and 400 metre races in the 1994 Games. Freeman went on to win the 400 metre race at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, afterwards draping herself in both the Aboriginal and Australian flags.

"The reason her moment was so powerful at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 was because of what she did in Victoria in 1994," Grevemberg added.

Blue Jays still unsure where they’ll play home games in 2020 – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 3:47 am

TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Blue Jays still dont know where theyll play home games when baseball resumes.

Speaking on a conference call Thursday, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said he hopes the team will be able to play north of the border this season, but acknowledged hurdles that could prevent games at Rogers Centre.

The U.S.-Canada border remains closed to nonessential travel because of the coronavirus pandemic. The current closure deal expires June 21 but is likely to be extended. The U.S. has more confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19 than any other country.

I will remain hopeful and optimistic that we are united, Atkins said. Theres not a member of this organization that doesnt want that.

If playing in Toronto isnt viable, the Blue Jays have considered a range of alternatives, including games at their newly-renovated spring stadium in Dunedin, Florida.

The options are either playing in Florida, playing in another major league stadium, or playing in a minor league facility, Atkins said. There could be other alternatives. Those are the ones that we have considered.

Torontos Triple-A team plays within sight of the border in Buffalo, New York. Atkins declined to say whether the Blue Jays had considered games in Buffalo.

Its not in our control completely, Atkins said. Major League Baseball will be involved, potentially other major league baseball teams will be involved. We know that we can play in Dunedin. We just want to make sure that we exhaust all of our alternatives.

The U.S.-Canada border is the worlds longest between two nations.

Lenovo Legion gaming phone will arrive in July – GSMArena.com news – GSMArena.com

Posted: at 3:47 am

After seeing several leaks about the Lenovo Legion smartphone, the company officially confirms that it will launch the upcoming smartphone next month. The news was mentioned in a teaser poster that the phone maker posted to its Weibo handle.

Source: Weibo

The Legion phone is a gaming smartphone with a unique layout of hardware. It has pop-up selfie cameras that stick out from the side, thus intending a mostly horizontal experience for the user. This horizontal experience was revealed in a teaser, and it has a very odd placement of the main cameras as well.

We know the Legion will support 5G networks and will be powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset. It was previously reported that it would support 90W charging, gamepad accessories, and some kind of liquid cooling technology. Lenovo also claims its new phone will break a 600k score on AnTuTu and outperform any other smartphone with the same chipset. The phone is also expected to use an active cooling fan to minimize throttling while maximizing performance.

NZ Rugby must be brave and schedule day games to win back fans – Stuff.co.nz

Beauden Barrett says Dan Carter's influence is already being felt as the Blues prepare for Sunday's season opener.

OPINION: New Zealands loyal rugby supporters deserve this.

While theres been economic pain at NZ Rugby, with half the staff losing their jobs because of the financial damage caused by Covid-19, the creation of Super Rugby Aotearoa should provide much-needed coin for its depleted bank accounts and also lift the morale of fans of the oval-ball code.

1 NEWS

Chiefs coach Warren Gatland is looking forward to seeing New Zealand's best competing head-to-head over 10 rounds.

The bureaucrats humming in the Beehive in Wellington may have had rose petals tipped on them by their shiny-eyed supporters, but its the ordinary Kiwis who made the sacrifices during lockdown, and got us to alert level one.

Thats why rugby has been able to push the ignite button, and invite the public into the grounds.

READ MORE:* World first: Super Rugby Aotearoa open to fans as New Zealand heads to Covid-19 alert level 1* Golden point, new red card rule confirmed for Super Rugby Aotearoa* Super Rugby: All Blacks star Brodie Retallick on why he turned down Chiefs coach Warren Gatland

Although the economy has been carpet bombed, and were all going to pay a heavy price for years to come, lets enjoy the return of our own unique brand of Super Rugby over the next 10 weekends.

Thats what makes sport so great. It helps bring everyone together when times are tough.

The Highlanders will host Warren Gatland's Chiefs side three years to the day after they beat his Lions tourists.

1 Whats changed?

A lot. With the original 15-team Super Rugby competition a goner, the new Super Rugby Aotearoa tournament caters for five New Zealand teams only.

Thats two games played each weekend.

The winner will be declared after the final round on August 15-16. There will be no playoffs. Go early and go hard will be the message for all teams.

Chiefs player Johnny Faoauli walks off after a red card in a 2018 Super Rugby game.

2 What new laws have been unveiled?

The introduction of the golden point rule and the watering down of the red card sanction are significant.

If a match is tied after 80 minutes of regular time, the result will be decided by golden point. The first team to score - by try, penalty kick or drop goal - during a 10-minute period of extra time will be declared the winner.

A red carded player can be replaced 20 minutes after he has been sent from the field. He cant return, and will face Sanzaars existing judicial process.

NZ Rugby says red cards can sometimes have too much of an effect on a match and fans, players and coaches want to see a fair contest.

But the on-field sanction for a blatant act of thuggery has also been diminished. This is a worry.

The Highlanders have shifted Mitch Hunt to fullback for the Super Rugby Aotearoa opener on Saturday.

3 Drop goals, anyone?

If games go into extra time, a droppie specialist will surely bury himself in the pocket and attempt to split the devils horns.

Its got to be an option. Mitch Hunt, when he played for the Crusaders, famously kicked a 46m pot goal against the Highlanders during injury time in Christchurch in 2017.

Now at the Highlanders, Hunt has been shifted from No 10 to fullback for the match against the Chiefs in Dunedin on Saturday night.

Chiefs captain Sam Cane will miss Saturday's match against the Highlanders.

4 Solving the riddle of the ruck.

Theres no rule changes at the breakdowns, but NZR says the existing laws will be applied more strictly to create faster attacking ball and fairer contests.

Right-oh, then. Clearly the intentions are good, but this isn't the first time weve heard this.

Now we wait to see whether the refs have the appetite, or bottle, to play the role of the bad cop and issue yellow cards if the penalty count soars.

5 Afternoon rugby on Sundays.

The 3.35pm kick-off on the sabbath is a victory for the rugby public.

The more NZR can do to promote day-time games, the better.

In addition to encouraging attractive footy, the earlier starts are great for families. NZR must do everything possible to win back the fans in 2021 and beyond.

Alas the Saturday slot has been shifted back two hours to 7.05pm. NZR says this is to accommodate club sport, and it obviously also works well for the broadcasters selling product to the northern markets.

Unless youre under the roof in Dunedin, be prepared to watch Saturday matches played with a dewy ball and in cold temperatures. Not ideal. There's always room for improvement.

All 2020 TBT games will be played in Nationwide Arena, without fans – Buckeye Extra

Posted: at 3:46 am

Columbus will be the site of the first televised basketball competition since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in mid-March when The Basketball Tournament is held July 4-14 at Nationwide Arena.

But no spectators will be permitted for the 23 games of the $1 million, winner-take-all tournament. Carmens Crew, a team consisting mostly of former Ohio State players, is the defending champion.

TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar said Columbus was chosen over cities including Wichita, Kansas, and Dayton largely because of the way health and safety plans could be implemented.

All participants from the 24 teams will be quarantined in the Hyatt hotel Downtown. Practice courts will be set up at the hotel and the Columbus Convention Center so players wont have to leave a three-block area during the tournament.

Players will undergo four tests over eight days, beginning three days before leaving for Columbus with an at-home test. If any player tests positive, his team will be eliminated from the tournament.

The announcement Thursday was the culmination of three months of work after COVID-19 threatened to force the cancellation of the event. The tournament, now in its seventh year, had to scale back from its traditional 64 teams and reduce its prize money by half of what it had offered the previous four years. Games will be televised by ESPN.

"It carries huge significance for us," Mugar said of surviving the pandemic. "As a young, upstart small business, weve seen so many (similar businesses) facing headwinds. Its always very inspiring when I see them get back on their feet and open. For us to be able to persist through all the obstacles was a very big test for us.

"Its something we have only been able to achieve because our players have been so willing, our partners have been so willing, and our staff has been great."

TBT has gained a following since its first event, in 2014. Teams typically are composed of former college teammates. Its signature touch is the Elam Ending, which forces teams to clinch victories by reaching a target score rather than just run out the clock.

In years past, early round games were held at various sites. Mugar said he knew that had to change this year because of the pandemic.

"We landed pretty early on having it at a single, safe location," he said.

Mugar said he worked closely with government and health experts.

"Theres so many partners in Columbus that were really gracious with their time and went to bat for us, and thats why were there," he said.

Mugar said that participating teams were instrumental in formulating the plan as well. Many players play overseas and understood the issues that needed to be addressed.

"They all want to feel safe, and our brand of basketball is so intense from the tip-off through the end of the game that we especially want everyone to feel safe," he said. "Strict protocols were the way to go. They have to know that everyone on the court went through the exact same process they did. That really became our mission."

He said that developing a thorough safety plan was a bigger emphasis than becoming the first major basketball tournament to be played since March.

"Being first adds attention, but thats never been the goal and still isnt really the goal," Mugar said.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement that hosting TBT in Columbus was another step forward in re-opening the state.

"Were looking forward to having live sports back in a safe way we all can enjoy," he said.

LaLiga is back: The games that could decide the title, relegation and European qualification – The World Game

Posted: at 3:46 am

The sporting world is slowly moving back towards normality amid the coronavirus pandemic, with LaLiga set to follow in the path of the Bundesliga and return behind closed doors.

Thursday's derby clash between Sevilla and Real Betis will kick things back off in Spain's top flight, three months after it was brought to a halt.

While there will be no fans in attendance, the stage is set for a truly fascinating run-in in LaLiga; the title, Champions League places and safety are still well and truly to play for.

We take a look at the fixtures that could prove key in deciding the final outcome.

Matchday 30: Sevilla v Barcelona, Real Sociedad v Real Madrid

With Sevilla and La Real heading into the coronavirus stoppage third and fourth respectively, there is every chance of a slip-up from Barcelona and/or Madrid in these tricky away games. Not only could they play a crucial role in deciding where the title ends up, but with just five points separating third from seventh at the resumption of play, the impact on Champions League and Europa League qualification could be important.

Matchday 30: Real Mallorca v Leganes

At the other end of the table, two teams that have spent the hiatus in the relegation zone will meet at Son Moix. Three points against a direct rival near the bottom would likely play a huge role in who ends up falling into the second tier.

Matchday 32: Getafe v Real Sociedad

These teams have a great opportunity to upset the established order and earn a place in the Champions League, leading to great anticipation around this clash at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. Getafe won their first meeting back in October 2-1, so La Real will be eager for a superior win in case the head-to-head record is needed to separate them in the standings.

Matchday 33: Barcelona v Atletico Madrid

Atletico earned a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou to win LaLiga in 2013-14 and Diego Simeone's side will need the same sort of grit and determination if they are to get a result that can boost their Champions League aspirations. For Barca it is one of four fixtures they have left against teams currently sitting in the top half, so a victory could be pivotal in their title defence.

Matchday 33: Real Madrid v Getafe

Barca's meeting with Atleti is arguably their toughest fixture left to play, so a home game against Getafe could set the stage for Madrid to launch a late charge for the title. However, Getafe, who have a Europa League last-16 tie with Inter still outstanding, will see it as a chance to enhance their Champions League bid.

Matchday 34: Espanyol v Leganes

Espanyol are six points adrift of safety at the foot of the table, so strong home form is going to be key for them especially when they are up against the next-worst team in the league. Leganes triumphed 2-0 when they met at Butarque in December, so failure to win here would significantly hinder Espanyol's survival chances.

Matchday 35: Barcelona v Espanyol

The match against Leganes takes on even more significance when you consider a trip to Catalan rivals Barca is due to follow. Nothing less than three points will be acceptable for Quique Setien's side, though for Espanyol a positive result not only helps them but also hinders their neighbours' title chances. Add in the fact relegation-threatened pair Eibar and Leganes meet on the same matchday, there's a chance for a significant shake-up at the bottom.

Matchday 37: Getafe v Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad v Sevilla

If the gap from third to seventh remains tight, then the penultimate set of fixtures may well be crucial. Victory here will likely have a huge impact on whether a team makes the Champions League, settles for the Europa League, or, in the worst-case scenario, slips outside the top six if Valencia and Villarreal put together a strong finish.

Matchday 38: Atletico Madrid v Real Sociedad

It certainly looks set to be a dramatic run-in for Atleti and La Real, with the last two rounds of matches appearing potentially make or break. Simeone's men have home advantage but fell to a 2-0 loss in their first meeting with the Basques in September. There is set to be plenty on the line at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Matchday 38: Espanyol v Celta

Should Espanyol, who last played in the second tier in 1993-94, manage to string a good run of results together then they could have a chance of completing a great escape on the final day at home to Celta, who were just one point above the bottom three when the season was suspended.

What Is Prison Abolition? How Would It Work? – GQ

Posted: at 3:46 am

As protests continue to spread in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd, one seemingly radical, decades-old idea has been thrust to the forefront of mainstream discourse: prison abolition.

With over two million people locked up in prisons and jails, the United States incarceration rate is the highest in the world, to the point where the country constitutes about five percent of the worlds population and yet houses 25 percent of the worlds prisoners. Black and brown people are disproportionately imprisoned, sexual abuse is rampant, labor is exploited, and prolonged solitary confinementdenounced as a form of torture by the United Nationsis commonplace. The brutality of these conditions becomes all the more salient when compared to other developed Western nations, where even life sentences for murder rarely involve being condemned to spend the remainder of ones days behind bars.

Prison abolitionists argue that it is not enough to simply reform our current criminal justice systemthat it must be completely dismantled and, in its place, society must invest in communities and address harm in other ways. The two foremost leaders of the contemporary prison-abolition movement are famed activist Angela Davis and the scholar and geographer Ruth Wilson Gilmore. In 1997, they cofounded the organization Critical Resistance with the mission to build an international movement to end the Prison Industrial Complex by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe. (You may have encountered the organizations graphic chart breaking down the effectiveness of reform vs. abolition circulating on social media as of late.)

With the concept of prison abolition gaining increased visibility and unprecedented momentum, GQ spoke to Woods Ervin, an organizer with Critical Resistance who has been involved in the movement for a decade, about its basic tenets, goals, and visions for a prison-free future.

GQ: Prison abolition is an idea, when first encountered, that can feel incredibly radical and infeasible. How did you first encounter it, and was there a particular moment where you felt like the switch had been flipped for you?

Woods Ervin: The theory clicked for me around 2008. I was working at the time with queer and trans young people of color in Chicago. Part of the daily work was trying to support, engage, and help develop young people who are being constantly targeted by the prison-industrial complex [PIC]. I had a firsthand understanding of how the PIC comes into people's lives and shrinks their life chances.

These were young people who were 13, 14, 15, getting kicked out of their homes for being queer and trans, and who, out of survival, were constantly coming into contact with the prison-industrial complex. For me, that put it in really stark relief. Because they couldn't figure out how to get out of the systemic nature of it, there was nothing for those young people. They were just falling through the cracks.

It clarified for me that the prison-industrial complex needed to be pulled apart. I think it was then that the politics crystallized, and it was in the practice of organizing with Critical Resistance that the work of how to do it crystallized.

As an organizer, when you're giving someone the elevator pitch for prison abolition, what do you tell them?

I say that abolition is a political vision with a goal of eliminating imprisonment, policing, and surveillance and creating lasting alternatives to punishment and imprisonment. That it's not just about getting rid of building cages, it's about actually undoing the society that continues to feed on and maintain the oppression of masses of people through punishment, violence, and control. Because the prison-industrial complex isn't an isolated system, abolition is a broad strategy. And so we have to be building models today that develop and represent how we want to live in the future. It's both a practical organizing tool and a long-term goal.

The prison-industrial complex isnt broken. Its doing exactly what it's meant to do.

Compared to other countries, the U.S. has a particularly cruel prison system. You can look to, say, some of the Scandinavian countries and see more humane prison systems and life sentences that only last 10 years. To prison abolitionists, why is criminal justice reform based on a system like that insufficient?

Experts explain what abolishing the police could actually look like – Insider – INSIDER

Posted: at 3:46 am

Over the past two decades, spending on police has continued to climb nationwide, making up one-third to one-half of some cities' entire budgets.

The police-related deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor have taken police defunding, once considered a far-left issue, and pushed it to the fore.

Calls to defund or even abolish the police have flooded Twitter, appeared on protest signs, and been echoed by lawmakers around the country.

But what do these ideas mean in practice?

Organizations like Black Lives Matter, People's Budget LA, and Black Visions Collective want to move taxpayer dollars away from surveillance and broken-windows policing toward addressing community needs.

"We need divestment from the police and a radical investment in communities of color, including housing, jobs, and education," DeRay Mckesson, a Black Lives Matter organizer and cofounder of the police-reform think tank Campaign Zero, wrote on Medium.

;

Most in the "defund the police" camp don't expect law enforcement to be stripped of all financing. Instead, they're asking for some of the billions poured into police coffers to be reallocated to services that better serve the community and result in less violence and death at cops' hands.

A woman holds a placard calling for the defunding of the Seattle Police Department at a Black Lives Matter demonstration on June 6, 2020. Toby Scott/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images

Currently, police in much of the U.S. are the ones responding to overdoses, homelessness, suicide attempts, and other social-welfare calls. When the Minneapolis City Council examined the city's 911 logs, for example, it found most really required the fire department, EMTs, or mental-health professionals.

According to reformers, when law enforcement shows up the situation often escalates into a physical confrontation. An officer trained to see killing as "not that big of a deal" is more likely to choose a violent response rather than de-escalation tactics.

About half of those killed by police had some kind of mental disability, according to a 2015 Ruderman Foundation report.

The notion of taking these responsibilities away from law enforcement is gaining traction: According to a June 2020 poll from Data for Progress, nearly 70% of voters support creating a non-police agency of first responders to address situations involving mental health issues or substance abuse.;

In Los Angeles, the People's Budget was created to show exactly how defunding the police might work in the city. The report suggests just 5.7% of funds be allocated to law enforcement, with 24% going to "reimagined community safety" programs, and 44% on "universal aid and crisis management."

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (left) announced he is cutting the NYPD budget and reallocating funds to support youth services. Associated Press

On Sunday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced he was cutting the NYPD's budget and moving resources to youth and social services. Currently, the police force's $6 billion budget is more than the city spends on housing, homelessness, and youth and community development combined, according to The New York Post.

De Blasio didn't share exactly how much of the NYPD budget would be slashed, but he said, "we are committed to shifting resources to ensure that the focus is on our young people," according to CBS 2.

New York City State Senator Julia Salazar, who tweeted Friday that "We should call to defund the NYPD," said the growing support is "surreal."

"To see legislators who aren't even necessarily on the left supporting at least a significant decrease in New York police department funding is really very encouraging," Salazar told the Guardian.

Some activists do want to go further than just cutting budgets and completely abolish the police.

The grassroots Minneapolis group MPD150, for example, is calling for a "police-free future."

"We're not abolishing help. We're abolishing police," MPD150's Arianna Nason said in a statement. "That's very different. We have to do the work to imagine something different and to listen to what people in different neighborhoods and communities want."

The words "Abolish Police" is spray-painted on the sidewalk as about 1,000 protested the death of George Floyd in downtown, Los Angeles, on Friday, June 5, 2020. Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

MPD150 advocates combatting the underlying issues that foster criminality and police action with "good, well-paying jobs, affordable housing, healthy food, empowering education, accessible health care [and] removal of toxins."

8toAbolition, another police-abolition group, argues the kind of reforms forwarded in Campaign Zero's 8 Can't Wait campaign like banning chokeholds and instituting a use-of-force continuum for cops "have already been tried and failed."

8toAbolition supports defunding law enforcement, but also removing police from schools, freeing people from prison, demilitarizing communities, repealing laws that "criminalize survival," and providing housing for all.

"The end goal of these reforms is not to create better, friendlier, or more community-oriented police or prisons," according to a statement on its website, "but to build toward a society without police and prisons."

Total police abolition may not be a reality any time soon, but Minneapolis may see some of these ideas tested very soon. On Sunday, a veto-proof supermajority in the Minneapolis' City Council voted to dissolve the city's police department.

Council President Lisa Bender told CNN the council's goal is "to rebuild with our community a new model of public safety that actually keeps our community safe."

"The idea of having no police department is certainly not in the short term," Bender added.
