Denver police ordered to stop using tear gas and plastic bullets in protests – Yahoo News
Posted: June 6, 2020 at 4:54 pm
By Keith Coffman
DENVER (Reuters) - A U.S. District Court Judge ordered Denver police on Friday to stop using tear gas, plastic bullets and other "less-than-lethal" force such as flash grenades against protesters.
The temporary injunction was in response to a local lawsuit filed on Thursday in the Denver District Court by protesters complaining about excessive force used by officers during public demonstrations following the death of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, in police custody in Minneapolis last month.
The ruling cited examples of protesters and journalists being injured by police.
"Peaceful demonstrators' legitimate and credible fear of police retaliation is silencing their political speech," it said.
The death of Houston native Floyd during his arrest for a non-violent offense has touched off national protests against the use of force by police.
Video of Floyd's arrest show an officer holding his knee on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes.
In Denver, throngs of marchers have gathered around the state Capitol every day for more than a week, chanting and carrying signs protesting Floyd's killing.
Some people among the mostly peaceful crowd broke windows in the state Supreme Court building and a nearby museum overnight on May 29. Some store front windows were smashed and looters made off with merchandise.
While the lawsuit, brought by four activists, acknowledged that some demonstrators "engaged in destructive behavior," and it also said the vast majority were peaceful.
"Nonetheless, the Denver Police Department ... and other police departments at their invitation, have engaged in injurious riot control tactics without issuing clear warnings and orders to disperse," the complaint said.
At least one woman sustained a serious eye injury when she was struck by a projectile, the lawsuit said.
'EXTREME TACTICS'
The court ruling cited numerous instances, captured on video, of police using tear gas, projectiles and other measures against peaceful protesters engaged in their U.S. Constitutional rights to gather and protest.
Story continues
Journalists were also specifically targeted and shot with projectiles, "while in the process of documenting the scene," the ruling said.
In his decision, U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson said that Denver police had "failed in its duty to police its own."
"If a store's windows must be broken to prevent a protester's facial bones from being broken or eye being permanently damaged, that is more than a fair trade," Jackson wrote in his 10-page ruling.
"These are peaceful demonstrators, journalists, and medics who have been targeted with extreme tactics meant to suppress riots, not to suppress demonstrations."
Tyrone Campbell, a Denver Police spokesman, said that the force would comply with the judge's order.
Milo Schwab, an attorney for four of the plaintiffs, told Reuters that the ruling was "a humbling victory."
"This will ensure that people protesting police brutality are not subject to police brutality," he said. "Demonstrators in Denver are now safer from police brutality than anywhere else in the country."

3 ways to get rid of eczema and prevent flare ups – Insider – INSIDER
Posted: at 4:52 pm
Eczema is a condition that can cause patches of your skin to become red, itchy, and sometimes blistered. Approximately 1 in 10 people will experience eczema at some point in their life, and for most people symptoms start before the age of 6.
Though there is no cure for eczema, there are treatments you can use to relieve your symptoms and keep the condition from getting worse.
Eczema tends to be chronic, meaning that it comes and goes over a long period of time. Some of the most common symptoms of eczema include:
Symptoms of eczema can be difficult to live with and can limit your ability to work or interrupt your sleep with itching. However, there are several treatments you can use to help improve your symptoms.
Keeping your skin moisturized is a key step to help control your eczema symptoms.
This is because many people with eczema have a weak skin barrier, which makes it hard for the skin to retain water.
"This means more dry skin and easily damaged skin," says Brian Kim, MD, a dermatology professor at the Washington University School of Medicine.
Putting oil-based moisturizers on your skin creates a barrier that keeps water from leaving the skin and helps prevent severe dryness from eczema.
Kim recommends looking for moisturizers or ointments that come in jars rather than lotions that come out of a pump, as these are more likely to contain heavier, oil-based ingredients. You can also look for ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, or petroleum jelly.
Experts recommend that Vaseline and Aquaphor are both good options for treating eczema. If these ointments feel too greasy to wear throughout the day, you can also apply them at bedtime.
Topical steroids are medications that you apply directly to your skin to help relieve inflammation.
Steroids work by blocking the chemicals that set off your immune system's response to skin irritation, which causes inflammatory symptoms like redness and itching.
People with eczema have immune systems that overreact to any damage of the skin barrier, Kim says. This means that when irritants like pollution or bacteria pass through a weak skin barrier, your immune system will go into overdrive, causing painful and irritating eczema symptoms.
Kim says that eczema patients should use topical steroids as soon as inflammation symptoms start to appear. "This will prevent the inflammation from getting worse over time and harder to control."
Topical steroids like hydrocortisone are available over the counter or your doctor may prescribe them. You can put topical antibiotics on your skin once or twice per day but you should never use them on infected skin unless your doctor approves it.
Coal tar is another eczema remedy that is especially useful because it can be applied to the entire body, including your scalp.
Coal tar works to treat eczema by slowing the growth of new skin cells and softening the top layer of your skin. This allows your skin to more easily shed scales and keep in moisture.
Coal tar comes as a gel, cream, or shampoo and you can find it over the counter at most pharmacies. Shampoo brands include Neutrogena T/Gel and Denorex and skin gels include Betatar and Fototar.
You can apply coal tar gel once or twice per day, while creams can be used up to 4 times a day. When using coal tar shampoo, it's best to consult with your doctor about how often you should use it.
Do not use coal tar on infected or blistered areas of skin and make sure to remove it before going out into the sun, as this can cause a negative skin reaction.
Because eczema patients have a weak skin barrier, they are at greater risk for skin infections like staph or the herpes simplex virus.
"Bacteria like to live on eczema-prone skin like a parasite," Kim says, adding that one sign of infection is when skin becomes oozy and crusted.
One remedy to treat infections is an antibiotic ointment like bacitracin or Neosporin, which you can find in most pharmacies. These ointments are able to kill bacteria like staph and allow skin to begin healing.
If topical antibiotics aren't helping, your doctor may also prescribe oral antibiotics, Kim says. When using topical or oral antibiotics, you should always consult with your doctor to determine how often and how long you should take them.
Eczema is an uncomfortable condition that can affect you over a long period of time, but there are many treatments available to soothe your symptoms. It's important to be proactive to keep your flare-ups at bay and to talk with your doctor about the best form of treatment for you.

Binghamton biomedical researchers get closer to why eczema happens – Binghamton University
Posted: at 4:52 pm
By Chris Kocher
June 05, 2020
An estimated 35 million Americans suffer from eczema, a chronic skin condition also known as atopic dermatitis. Worldwide, 2 to 5% of adults and about 15% of children suffer from symptoms such as dry, inflamed and very itchy skin with open sores.
Although there are myriad treatments for eczema, such as medical creams and natural remedies, the exact causes of the condition remain elusive.
A new study from Binghamton University researchers published in the journal Tissue Barriers may help to peel back the layers of unhealthy skin at least metaphorically speaking and get closer to a cure.
In a new paper, the team Associate Professor Guy German and PhD student Zachary W. Lipsky from the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Associate Professor Claudia N.H. Marques of the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences Department of Biological Sciences connects two aspects of eczema research that are rarely studied together.
A new study from Binghamton University's Watson School shows that bacteria associated with eczema dont grow around skin cells but actually through them.
One result of atopic dermatitis is a decreased level of skin oils known as lipids, particularly one group called ceramides. Lipids on the surface of the skin function to regulate hydration and also help defend the skin from foreign invaders either indirectly through immune signaling or directly through their inherent antimicrobial activity.
Another result of eczema is an increase in staph bacteria in the skin, which can cause irritation and infection.
German said that genetics can play a part in whether someone has eczema, but people in certain occupations have also been shown to be more likely to get the skin condition, such as healthcare professionals, metalworkers, hairdressers and food processing workers. The connection? An increased amount of handwashing or regular contact with detergents for your job.
What happens if, either through a mutation or through occupational risks, theres a decreased presence of lipids on the skin? he asked. The essence of this study is that in normal, healthy conditions, bacteria do not penetrate the skin barrier. In atopic dermatitis conditions or lipid levels consistent with AD, it does and it consistently takes nine days.
Because the staph bacteria are immobile, they need to multiply in number to grow through the protective outer skin layer known as the stratum corneum. The Watson researchers believe the bacteria dont grow around the skin cells but actually through them. With lipid depletion either through genetics or occupational risks the skin appears to become more vulnerable to bacterial invasion and infection of underlying skin tissue.
When we usually think about the oils in our skin, we think about water retention and moisturizing things like that, Lipsky said. Now were looking at how these lipids are important for protection against these microorganisms that can come in and cause diseases.
Guy German is an associate professor at Binghamton University's biomedical engineering department. Image Credit: Jonathan Cohen.
While this study has not unlocked all the secrets of atopic dermatitis, showing that the bacteria could be the cause rather than the result of the disease is a major step forward. Further research is required, and thats where the Watson team will investigate next.
Now that we know that bacteria can permeate through lipid depleted skin, how does it affect the skin mechanically? Lipsky asked. Does it make the skin weaker and more likely to crack? Can we figure out how bacteria are moving through different skin layers?
German added: In scientific research, you get one answer and three additional questions pop up, so were never stuck for things to do.
German, Marques and Lipskys research, titled Lipid depletion enables permeation of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria through human stratum corneum, is funded through Germans NSF CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation.

Eczema treatment – the 1 natural oil to protect against dry and itchy skin at home – Express
Posted: at 4:52 pm
Young children are most at risk of developing eczema symptoms, but it could also develop in later life.
If you have eczema, your symptoms can vary between small patches of dry skin, to widespread, inflamed areas of cracked skin.
You could lower your risk of dry skin at home by using certain natural moisturisers.
One of the best natural treatments for eczema is coconut oil, it's been revealed.
READ MORE: Eczema treatment - the sweet treat to relieve dry and itchy skin
"Some medications can irritate sensitive skin, prompting many people with eczema to search for effective natural treatments, such as coconut oil," said medical website Medical News Today.
"While coconut oil cannot cure eczema, it can soothe the skin, reduce irritation and itching, and lower the risk of infection.
"Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but exposure to heat turns it into a liquid. A person can use solid or liquid coconut oil on the skin. If it is solid, rub a small scoop between the fingertips until it softens.
"To reduce symptoms of eczema, apply coconut oil to the skin twice a day, or more often if necessary. A person can use it like any other lotion or moisturiser."

Acuwellness Center offers acupuncture for infertility. Research suggests that acupuncture, along with traditional Chinese medicine, can serve as an effective treatment for infertility and other reproductive disorders.
According to announcements released by Acuwellness Center, and Sharareh (Sherry) Daghighi DAOM, LAc, FABORM, the wellness center offers acupuncture for fertility. Research-backed evidence suggests that fertility acupuncture can be a useful treatment procedure to complement IVF and ART treatments. Combined with other TCM protocols, acupuncture can enhance physiological processes essential for fertility. Acupuncture as a treatment modality for infertility can assist in preparation for IVF, IUI, and other ART protocols. Fertility acupuncture helps control unwanted side effects associated with IVF and ART treatments. It improves implantation and pregnancy rates. The wellness clinic will coordinate with a subject's reproductive endocrinologist to prepare a custom infertility treatment plan to optimize her chances at conception.
Sources reveal that alternative treatment procedures that use acupuncture and herbs can improve the symptoms of many health conditions, including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is not an uncommon condition among women in the United States. PCOS can result in diabetes, hirsutism, infertility, and obesity. Acuwellness Center is also an established Encino dermatology clinic where eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, fungal infections, etc. are treated using herbal formulations, dietary supplements, and acupuncture. The wellness clinic prescribes herbs for acne, and it has delivered excellent results in treating this condition. TCM eschews the use of topical ointments that may contain harsh chemicals. Acuwellness Center treats acne by recommending dietary and lifestyle changes, acupuncture, and herbal medicines. It prescribes Chinese herbs for eczema.
Sharareh (Sherry) Daghighi DAOM, LAc, FABORM, of Acuwellness Center said, At Acuwellness Center, we offer services such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutritional consultation in a friendly, relaxing environment. Our areas of expertise are woman's health, fertility, internal medicine, and TCM dermatology. Our mission is to provide a tranquil, healing environment where your mind, body, and spirit can relax and recover from the stress of everyday living.
On acupuncture and herbs for premature ovarian failure, Daghighi said, Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) is defined as a cessation of ovarian function in women younger than 40 years of age. It is characterized by the occurrence of irregular and light menstruation (oligomenorrhea), primary or secondary amenorrhea (no menstruation) with elevated levels of gonadotrophins like follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and low estrogen levels. Women with POF will also have menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and decreased sexual desire.
She continued to say, Studies have shown that Acupuncture and herbal medicine can treat premature ovarian failure. Acupuncture can induce ovulation and regulate the menstrual cycle, other studies have shown some herbal formulas such as Zuo Gui Wan or a modification of this formula can induce ovulation, lower FSH levels, and regulate menstrual cycle for certain POF patients. At Acuwellness Center, we offer Acupuncture and herbal medicine services for infertility, including premature ovarian failure, we can help achieve your fertility goals or just reduce menopausal symptoms.

The new international accord has been sealed in order to facilitate military exchanges and exercises in the Indo-Pacific region. The landmark treaty also allows military ships and aircraft to refuel and access maintenance facilities.
The agreement - known as the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement - was reached during a virtual summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.
It had been the first time the Indian Prime Minister held virtual discussions with a foreign leader since the global pandemic began.
Upon announcing the agreement, Prime Minister Modi appeared to take a swipe at Beijing following weeks of conflict at the disputed border.
Mr Modi said: "We share democratic values, the rule of law, freedoms, and respect for international institutions.
When these are being challenged, we need to strengthen our cooperation."
Mr Morrison added: "It is time for our relationship to grow broader and deeper.
Relations between India and China continue to be strained with thousands of unarmed troops locked in a standoff along the 2,000 mile-long border.
According to Indian security officials Beijing forces intruded into Indian territory along the western Himalayas something China denies.
Tensions have also escalated over Indias plan to construct a road near the Galwan valley which is regarded as a disputed region.
Meanwhile India continue to strengthen ties with the US and Prime Minister Modi held talks with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

Remember GamerGate? If we had just listened to this activist, we might've been able to prevent it, and a whole lot more too.
Remember GamerGate? If we had just listened to this activist, we might've been able to prevent it, and a whole lot more too.
Before #GamerGate, before Russian trolls stole the 2016 US election, there was #EndFathersDay. It was a Twitter campaign that was supposedly instigated by black feminists on Twitter, but as it turned out, it was actually the same trolls that would later go on to do so much worse.
Shafiqah Hudson was the first person to notice. In an interview with Slate, this actual black feminist started digging into the Twitter profiles of posts with the hashtag #EndFathersDay. It didn't take long for her to discover that they were all fake.
Each account had several red flags. First, they weren't associated with any other social media or online accounts--they had no presence. Second, they all used a form of black vernacular that just seemed so obviously sarcastic that it was hard to miss. It was like someone else was trying to sound African American but they couldn't keep themselves from throwing in at least a hint of contempt.
Unfortunately, the #EndFathersDay campaign worked. It managed to fool mainstream media and news organizations long enough to start making headlines, pinning the blame on such a ridiculous campaign on "black feminists" in order to generate a wave of hate towards them.
RELATED: It's Time To Address Ageism In The Gaming Industry
Another activist, INasah Crockett, noticed the same thing. She dug even further and found the source of the #EndFathersDay campaign: a 4Chan post that outlined the whole thing. Crockett and Hudson then joined forces with other black feminists to begin the #YourSlipIsShowing campaign that outed many of those accounts, but the damage had already been done.
Worse still, #EndFathersDay was a proof of concept. It proved that a public misinformation campaign could be started with relatively few resources (just a few hundred fake accounts) in order to create real-world mayhem.
That was back in June of 2014. A few months later, GamerGate would hit using the exact same tactics: fake accounts created an online whirlwind of outrage centered around games journalism, while the real 4Chan trolls went after female game developers like Zelda Williams and Zo Quinn.
Fast-forward to 2016, and Russia would use the same tactics in order to sway an entire election. And its been going on ever since.

Reddit Executive Chairman Resigns From the Site’s Board, Posts Cringe – Mother Jones
Posted: at 4:48 pm
For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis and more, subscribe to Mother Jones' newsletters.
On Friday, Alexis Ohanian, one of Reddits co-founders, said that hes stepping down from the sites board because it is the right thing. He wants the company to appoint a Black board member in his place.
It is long overdue Ohanian said. Im doing this for me, for my family, and for my country. Im writing this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: What did you do?
He also committed to giving $1 million to Colin Kaepernicks Know Your Rights Camp as well as donating future gains in his Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate.
Ohanians quest for absolution is vague. He doesnt specify the source of whatever guilt he is expiating here, nor any specific injustice that he contributed to that might explain what his departure is fixing. Were left to guess.
There at least a few things that have gone wrong in Ohanians time that he might be feeling bad about:
One of his biggest missteps was his failure to do anything as his platform became an incubator for some of the most toxic, extreme communities online. During Gamergate, Ohanian, et al.,more or less stood by as their platform became an organizing tool for vicious right-wing trolls who were aggressively harassing women in the gaming industry under the ridiculous guise of caring about ethics in gaming journalism.
Gamergate is often cited as a turning point in the internet culture wars, a moment when it became clear that the warped trolls werent just posting for the lulzthey were actually sexist and racist bigots who were eager to terrorize people. To this day, the almost-official GamerGate subreddit sits unbanned on Reddit, despite having been a hub for the movement.
Ohanian and Reddit were also slow to address other virulent communities of hate on the platform. The site and platform eventually did take action on some of the worst communities, banning subreddits like r/CringeAnarchy, which spread depressingly gross, incendiary content in the aftermath of the New Zealand Christchurch shooting.
He and the company also stood idly by as r/The_Donald, a subreddit featuring Trumps most toxic supporters online, grew into a massive community. Reddit eventually quarantined it, the platforms term for isolating problematic communities and making it harder to access them.
Ohanians move is especially bizarre in that he doesnt seem to have secured anything tangible from the Reddit board. There doesnt seem to be any guarantee that the company will do as he urges and hire a black candidate, nor is there any demand on his part that the Black hire be committed to any particular vision of racial justice. Black representation alone is not a guarantee of making meaningful strides to racial equity. At least he went out in the most Reddit way possiblewith a weird post that leaves you feeling faintly embarrassed for having read it.

The heart of any good online-focused title is the comfort in knowing that the developers behind it, are dedicated, providing consistent updates and content patches that keep the game feeling fresh, exciting and fun to play. Dauntless in many ways, exemplifies this notion with its numerous updates that have helped push it forward.
Call of the Void is the latest content update for Dauntless, which promises to bring with it a host of both minor and substantial changes, including a new Umbral Escalation, which adds a dark elemental themed gauntlet for players to conquer. A trailer for the new update can be viewed down below.
Call of the Void takes place on a never-before-scene cluster of islands which seemingly have exposed the Behemoths to this strange umbral energy elemental, transforming and mutating them further into berserk, killing-machines that will test even the hardened of monster hunters. To make matters worse, Slayers will have to vanquish the Behemoth Thrax, a new worm-like alien serpent that awaits those skilled enough to make it to the end.
Thankfully, both veterans and new Dauntless players can look forward to the addition of a training grounds area, which gives Slayers access to dummy training dolls and their full arsenal of weapons and gear. In other words, the training grounds will be the perfect place to hone and try out different play styles, eliminating the worry of jumping in blind or trying a new weapon or play style, in live combat.
Call of the Void also, for the first time, introduces narrative and story elements into the experience which will set the stage for further content that will be released in July. Those who acquire the Relics & Ruins hunter pass can look forward to 50 levels of rewards; all centred around the void elemental update, including the coveted Umbral Knight armour set. The Call of the Void content update will hit Dauntless on all major platforms and PC on June 11, 2020.

While the third and fifth entries are the best intheir respective trilogies,Avernumweaves a continuous narrative that requires thefranchise to be taken as a whole.Avernum 1is very rough around the edges but does a decent job of setting up the main conflict between the Empire and those exiled to Avernum's subterranean locations.
JRPGs are not usually associated with isometric camera angles, but tactical RPGs are the exception. Released in the same year as Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Tactics is arguably even better than the mainline entry.
Combining 3D with an isometric camera angle, Tactics' turn-based battle system takes place on a grid-style battleground where a unit's movement is dictated by their stats and class. The combat system requires constant planning from the player, as the enemy AI offers a reasonable challenge through the lengthy and fantastic campaign.
Ever since it was originally released in 1999, arguably no other title has come close to mimicking that sense of being part of a small rebellion waging an ever-expandingwar against an overwhelming enemy.Jagged Alliance 2places users in charge of a mercenary group tasked with liberating the nation of Arulco and restoring the royal family to their throne.
Along with taking over towns and mines to fund the resistance, the player is constantly seeking to expand their forces' numbers and arsenal.Jagged Alliance 2's ambition is impressive even in 2020, while the tactical turn-based combat is challenging but incredibly rewarding.
Leave it toObsidian Entertainment to follow upPillars of Eternitywith arguably an even better isometric RPG.Tyrannytakes place in a world where evil has won in the form of the overlord Kyros, andusers play as one of his subordinates tasked with bringing order to the world.
While the gameplay sticks very close toPillars of Eternity,Tyrannyplaces more importance on interactivity and choice, even going as far as to allow players to shape the campaign's backstory by determining how Kyros claimed the world of Terratus as his own.
Although a case can be made for the biggerFallout 2, 1997's original benefits from having a more focused storyline that, ultimately, leaves a longer-lasting impression. Outside of encounters,Divinity: Original Sin II boasts consistently impeccable writing and areas that just demand to be explored.

Planescape: Tormentmostly pushes combat to the side to focus on its narrative and world-building, a decision that makes itmore accessiblefor a revisit in this day and age.
Two decades later andBaldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amnhas yet to lose its shine. Once again set in Dungeons & Dragons' Forgotten Realms,BioWare's RPG presents a detailed world rich with personality and tales to tell.
