The Evolution of Silent Hill’s Nurses and Where They May Go – GameRant

Posted: June 6, 2020 at 5:10 pm

Silent Hill is filled with monsters that represent the deepest fears, regrets, and traumas of those who are unfortunate enough to be trapped inside. Of all the monsters, one of the types that has stuck with players and have presented themselves to the most protagonists is the Nurse.

Most people have been in a hospital at some point in life. It may have been to visit someone, to go to work, or even receive treatment. Due the many different types of memories people have in hospitals, the perception of nurses is different for every person.

The Nurses of Silent Hill have appeared since the very first game on the original PlayStation. Because of the constantly changing protagonists and the different themes of each Silent Hill, their appearances are different in most Silent Hill titles. Some changes are more obvious while others are more subtle. Players should note that there will be spoilers for the majority of Silent Hill games below due to plot elements being related to the symbolism behind these Nurses.

Far different from the Nurses commonly known by fans, the very first Nurses in Silent Hill are known as Puppet Nurses. These monsters appear are normal human female nurses that have parasitic growths on their backs. Puppet Nurses have a variety of different hair colors and clothing colors. Despite their appearances however, they are still very dangerous.

They are capable of ganging up on protagonist, Harry Mason, with one Puppet Nurse able to grab him while the others attempt to stab him. Puppet Nurses are additionally the only type of Nurse that has a male counterpart. These are known as Puppet Doctors. They are stronger, but slower than the Puppet Nurses.

Unlike other Silent Hill titles, the monsters in the original are not based on the protagonist, but are rather based on the traumas and memories of Alessa. Alessa Gillespie is a girl who was tortured by a cult known as the Order in Silent Hill so that she would give birth to their god.

The Puppet Nurses represent how Alessa saw the nurses in the hospital while she was kept alive after being burned alive. While the nurses weren't members of the Order, they were still being puppeted around by them through keeping Alessa alive. It is also possible that this is how Alessa saw herself with the Order's god being a parasite on her body.

The Bubble Head Nurses from Silent Hill 2are the most famous of the Nurse types and have influenced the designs of all later Nurses. These Nurses appear to have their heads wrapped in a wet vinyl that completely covers their faces. The bottom of their vinyl masks has the shape of the face of a baby, but this is sometimes blocked by one of Silent Hill's prominent Red Squares. As they walk, they are always twitching, giving a very unnatural look to them.

Bubble Head Nurses also have another variety that can be found in the Otherworld where their clothes are far more dirty with spikes driven through their masks. They additionally also have a fleshy protrusion coming out of backs and shoulders.

The Bubble Head Nurses have many meanings to them involving Silent Hill 2's protagonist, James Sunderland. The most obvious example being with how the vinyl masks covering the Nurses' faces causing them to unnaturally convulse referencing James killing his wife, Mary, by suffocating her in her hospital bed with a pillow. The masks also give the effect of how Mary's head was swelling while sick.

Another meaning to them is the sexual frustrations and possible adultery of James Sunderland. Due to not being able to be sexual with his wife while she lay dying in the hospital, it's very possible that he ogled the nurses that were taking care of Mary in the hospital. However, he did not see them as just beautiful women, he simply saw them as objects without a face, explaining the Bubble Head Nurse's covered face and exposed body. In development, the Bubble Head Nurses originally wielded a blood transfusion stand, but it was changed to a steel pipe as a callback to the weapon most used by Harry Mason.

Silent Hill 3combines the more human appearance and the sexualized outfit for their take on the Nurses. These Nurses are simply known as Nurses and all share the same black bob haircut, purple eye shadow, and purple lipstick. Their eyes are always shut and have a red stain around their mouths that is similar to the red squares of the Bubble Head Nurses. The Nurses here can carry iron pipes as in Silent Hill 2, but they can also use a revolver against protagonist, Heather Mason. They not only can shoot, but they are also capable of performing pistol-whips if too close.

Due to Heather being a reincarnation of Alessa, these nurses represent Alessa's memories in the hospital once more. However, their dark hair may serve as a reminder to Heather of what her original hair color was. The sexualization of the nurses could possibly represent Alessa's fears of becoming pregnant with the Order's god. According to designer, Masahiro Ito, the red stains around their mouths represent madness. These Nurses can also be seen as upgrades to the Puppet Nurses, due to there being a large red stain on their upper back where the parasite could have been. Their movement also suggests their movement being controlled by some sort of puppet strings.

Silent Hill 4: The Room didn't have any nurses of any kind, but the next evolution of the Nurse appeared in Silent Hill: Origins for the PSP and PlayStation 2. These Nurses are similar to the Bubble Head Nurses, but have stockings with garter belts, high heels, and a surgical mask that appears to be melted to their faces. The arsenals of the Faceless Nurses is similar to that of the Puppet Nurses with their only weapons being scalpels and syringes. They twitch a lot more than any other Nurses as well.

RELATED:Silent Hill on PS5 is Looking Likelier by the Day

Due to the protagonist, Travis Grady, possibly being a serial killer, the Faceless Nurses could represent his victims. The twitching of the Faceless Nurses could be representative of Travis's victims shaking in fear before dying. Even their names could be referencing that Travis saw the victims as faceless.

The Silent Hill movies had their own variety of Nurse based on the Bubble Head Nurses. These Nurses are known as Dark Nurses and were portrayed by dancers in the first Silent Hill film in order to get across their inhuman movements. Their faces seem to be made of of deformed flesh with each Dark Nurse having a unique and organic face. There are signs of burns or rotting in some of them, while others have faces that appear much smoother.

The Dark Nurses use pipes, knives, scalpels, and syringes, making these the Nurses with the largest variety of weapons. Dark Nurses additionally seem to be in larger clusters than in the games, making them extremely dangerous. Their movement appears mechanical with them being very sensitive to any light. It's possible that the Dark Nurses symbolize how Alessa saw her nurses as faceless, while additionally feeling self-conscious about her own deformities due to being burned alive. The Dark Nurses would be seen as beautiful and sexy women if it weren't for their monstrous parts, after all. It's also possible that Alessa felt jealous toward her nurses due to them being able to come and go as they pleased while she remained trapped.

In the sequel movie, Silent Hill: Revelation, the Dark Nurses make a return. Due to Heather's circumstances in the movie being similar to how they were in the games, it's possible that the Dark Nurses represent Heather's feelings on growing up into womanhood. They could also simply be the remains of her old memories coming back to haunt her.

Using many design parts from the Dark Nurses as well as the Bubble Head Nurses are Silent Hill: Homecoming's Nurses, which are known as Demon Nurses as labeled in their concept art. These Nurses have deformed and fleshy faces with sexual nurse uniforms made out flesh. They additionally wear high heels and can be seen growing a fetus inside them when lit up by any light source that isn't a flashlight. The DemonNurses react to light violently and are capable of making very fast slashes with their knives that can catch players off guard. However, they can be avoided completely if the player turns off their flashlight and passes by them quietly.

With the Demon Nurses being the first enemy that players will find while playing as protagonist, Alex Shepherd, in Silent Hill: Homecoming, they have a lot of roots within his character. Due to Alex Shepherd being institutionalized within a mental hospital for four years, he was stuck with only his sexual fantasies while also being surrounded by nurses. While there, Alex fantasized about being part of the military and in a military hospital instead.

He would write in his journal about how the military only hired attractive nurses with sexual uniforms to make the stay better, when it was actually what he wanted in the hospital. These Nurses likely represent a dark and twisted version of his fantasy with them being only faceless and sexual beings. Demon Nurses are additionally the only Nurses in Silent Hill to have jiggle physics.

RELATED:The Worst Licensed Horror Games Ever Released

The Demon Nurses being pregnant could symbolize a couple of things. They could symbolize Alex wanting to have sexual relations with women without care. They could also symbolize how Alex's life changed when his mother became pregnant with his younger brother, Joshua. With Alex killing the fetuses by killing the nurses, it could also symbolize how Alex killed Joshua.

Many players are waiting and hoping for a Silent Hill announcement from Konami for the PlayStation 5. While there is nothing confirmed as of now, it is interesting to think about what form the Nurses could take in the next title.

Based on the symbolism and analysis of all the Nurses above, it's probably best to have a new fresh Nurse. Most of the Nurses are based on the Bubble Head Nurse, and while it is an iconic design, it is limited in what kind of symbolism it can have. Not every protagonist of Silent Hill has to have a past involving sexual repression. There are so many possible things a Nurse could be to someone, so it might be time to let the Bubble Nurse and her sisters go on a well-deserved vacation.

Nurses can be mother figures to those who've been in the hospital at a young age. They can also be saviors to those who have survived terrible things. These thoughts can become twisted in the realm of Silent Hill into truly frightening monsters. A monster that believes that its healing when its actually harming can be very dangerous as well as scary.

New nurses don't necessarily have to go back to looking like humans, but there is so much variety in the monsters inhabiting Silent Hill that the Nurses can be changed. If the next Silent Hill wants to get into mind game territory with leaning on the fourth wall, the nurses could take on the faces of those players' galleries or something crazy like that.

There could even be Nurses that subvert the expectation of the look of Silent Hill Nurses by incorporating even more body horror, creating a very uncomfortable monster to look at. While some of the changes made over time, such as Homecoming's fetus, are very neat and add something new, the next Nurse should be completely new.

There is currently no new information on when or if a newSilent Hilltitle is coming out.

Companies are starting to bet big on psychedelic drugs to treat US mental health epidemic – Proactive Investors USA & Canada

Posted: at 5:09 pm

Once dismissed as a "party drug" for its hallucinogenic effects, ketamine is emerging as a novel alternative treatment for depression

Psychedelic medicine is having a moment.

Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved esketamine to treat depression, making it the first-ever psychedelic drug to receive the regulatory green light in the US, withUK authorities also givingtheir approval for the ketamine-like druga few months later.

MDMA, commonly known as ecstasymeanwhile, has been given breakthrough therapy designation by the US regulatorfor post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Against this backdrop, a flourishing new sub-sector of the life sciences industry is emerging.

For most, psychedelic drugs conjure up images of the 1960's, hippies tripping out on LSD or magic mushrooms. However, early studies are finding that psilocybin the active agent in magic mushrooms could treat addiction, depression, anxiety and mental health conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Similarly, cancer patients with painful anxiety over their illness have found more peaceful acceptance after participating in a study that involved intensive therapy and being given a drug that was once a symbol of the 60's counterculture.

While there are many parallels with the development of the cannabis industry, the trailblazers in the field of psychedelics are keen to stress the differences, particularly with reference to the recreational element of the former.

Psychedelics werent born of the counterculture. They were killed by it, says a report by investment bank , authored by Tania Gonsalves and Scott McFarland, which provides some of the first in-depth analysis of the sector.

Once dismissed as a "party drug" for its hallucinogenic effects, ketamine is emerging as a novel alternative treatment for depression. The approval ofs () nasal spray antidepressant that is chemically similar to often-abused ketamine, shines a light on New York-based ()which is advancing its own medication for depression.

Wall Street is bullish that Seelos SLS-002 intranasal ketamine depression drug under development is safe and will reach millions of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) at risk of committing suicide.

The market for our SLS-002 depression drug is very large as more than 900,000 people were admitted to the ER for suicidality even though no effective drug treatment exists, Seelos Therapeutics CEO Raj Mehra told Proactive.

In November last year, the FDA granted SLS-002fast track designation for development of the drug as a treatment of Acute Suicidal Ideation and Behavior (ASIB) in patients withmajor depressive disorder (MDD).

Seelos has also saidit is on track to release additional safety data on the Phase I studies of SLS-002 in the second quarter of 2020.

The psychedelics industry itself is big enough to pique the interest of Big Pharma, with Canaccord Genuity estimating the total market size for all indications under investigation to be as much as $100 billion. However, it is still start-ups and innovators which are setting the pace.

Mind Medicine (MindMed) Inc (NEO:MMED) () recentlylaunched Project Lucy, a commercial drug development program for the treatment of anxiety disorders. The Reno-based company said it intends to initiate a Phase 2b human efficacy trial that will focus on experiential doses of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) administered by a therapist.

MindMed noted that this is the first experiential, psychedelic-assisted therapy to be added to its drug development pipeline.

With the launch of Project Lucy, the company said it is now preparing a total of three Phase 2 commercial drug trials based on psychedelic-inspired medicines, making it one of the most advanced and largest drug development pipelines in the psychedelics industry.

MindMed cofounder and co-CEO JR Rahn, a former Uber employee and Y-Combinator alumnus, believes America was on track to face a mental health crisis before the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, and self-isolation, social distancing, and job losses are exacerbating the problem.

I went through the Y-Combinator program from where companies like and Dropbox developed and I was looking at my friends companies that were going to put a lot of people out of work, Rahn told Proactive.

Ultimately, what I saw was that addiction and mental health problems were going to skyrocket in America. These problems were already large, but they were going to get bigger in time. Thats all been fast-forwarded now. COVID-19 and the lockdown in terms of isolation just made these problems bigger.

MindMed is making a run at curbing opioid abuse, based on 18-MC, a proprietary non-hallucinogenic molecule derivative of psychedelic ibogaine. Ibogaine comes from iboga, a West African plant whose yellowish root bark induces powerful psychedelic experiences. It has its genesis in healing ceremonies among various African communities.

Among other players, Vancouver-based Champignon Brands Inc () (OTCMKTS:SHRMFF) is planning to open at least five ketamine clinics in North America by the end of 2020. It recentlyclosed the acquisition of AltMed Capital Corp, a Canadian ketamine clinic operator with strong research and development projects.

Empower Clinics Inc () (OTCQB:EPWCF), the CBD product producer and wellness clinic operator, is also leveraging its existing clinic network, which boasts some 165,000 patients and a robust team of physicians, to focus on psilocybin research and psychedelics therapy in the treatment of mental health issues.

Taking the active ingredients of psychedelics and clinically proving their efficacy offers hope for those with post-traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, anxiety, deep-seated depression and addiction.

Psychedelics have shown promising efficacy across a broad range of both mental and substance abuse disorders, the analysts at Canaccord said in their research note. Together, the targeted indications affect over one-billion people globally.

Dr. Bronner’s Soaps Wants to Protect You From COVIDand Legalize Your Right to Magic Mushrooms – Mother Jones

Posted: at 5:08 pm

For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis and more, subscribe to Mother Jones' newsletters.

When I met David Bronner at a cannabis dispensary in Berkeley, California, last fallapproximately 1,000 years ago in the B.C., or before-coronavirus erathe CEO of Dr. Bronners Magic Soaps made good on my hunch that the Southern Californiacompany, known for its minty tingle and wordy label, is one of the few American corporations that give zero fucks.

In a good way.

Id arrived at Berkeley Patients Group early, to get settled in before Bronner and his partner, Mia Hardwick, arrived. I recall thinking that if a doctors office and Hot Topic had a baby, this is almost certainly what itd look like. The Misfits played overhead, almost, just almost pulling you out of the distinctly clinical and well-lit surroundings. Beneath the large glass display sat various types of cannabis flower, neatly arranged: Jack Herer, Biscotti, Gorilla Glue #4, Pineapple Punch.

Bronner showed up looking less the part of Company Executive than California Dude, in clay-colored, natural linen pants and a T-shirt, his long hair pulled into a ponytail and tucked under a cap. But it fithis official title, after all, is actually Cosmic Engagement Officer. He had to hunch his over-6-foot frame to get a good look at the inventory.

Could we check out a Brother Davids Pineapple Punch? he asked the budtender.

She handed him a small, brown paper box. Like fresh juicy pineapples after an amazing day at the beach, a sticker on it read, Pineapple Punch is your cannabis partner for sunshine, freedom and creative flow.It boasted about being grown under the California Sun, In the Soil of Mother Earth, without chemicals, by fairly paid family farmers.

Ill actually go ahead and buy one. I already know its really good, Bronner said, with a knowing smile.

Hes tried it, of courselikely many times. Pineapple Punch is a product from Bronners new(ish) cannabis line, Brother Davids. Launched on Earth Day last year, April 22, Brother Davids is an entity separate from the organic soap empire founded by Davids grandfather in 1948 and is a means to introduceto the market a chemical-free, fair labor, cannabis program created with help from Bronner, Sun+Earth Certified. Because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, he explained to me, it cant be legally certified as organic, a determination made by the USDA, and consumers are largely left without knowing which growers are pesticide-free or employ fair labor practices. Sun+Earth Certified aims to be that standard.

This type of outside-the-box innovation is something of an informal guiding principle for the guy behind Dr. Bronners; its almost quite literally that insufferable trope, Be the change you want to see. If the soap company needs something to make its products ethically and environmentally friendly, and that something doesnt already exist (or its not currently legal), Dr. Bronners will actually make change happen.

Its practically baked into the companys DNA: In addition to founding the company, Emanuel Bronneraka Dr. Bronner, though he wasnt really a doctorheld strong moral convictions. He gave lectures on the interconnectedness of humanity and sold soap in downtown Los Angeles. In 1950, after Emanuel realized people were simply taking the soap and leaving, he printed his sermons on the label. Dr. Bronners bottles still carry Emanuels message: We are All-One or None!

Over the years, Dr. Bronners has put in real work to make change happen, unlike so many brands now trying to capitalize on socially conscious consumers (see this piece from my colleague Inae Oh from earlier this week if you dont know what I mean). The self-described activist brand hasput its weight behind causes like animal welfare, criminal justice reform, and fair pay. It has spent millions in support of state ballot measures that require the labeling of genetically modified foods. Back in 2001, Dr. Bronners helped leada lawsuit against the Drug Enforcement Agency to allow oil derived from hemp in their products, eventually notching a win at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2004.Bronner himself has been arrested twice for hemp-related protests: First for planting hemp seeds on the lawn of the Arlington, Virginia, DEA Museum in 2009, and then again in 2012 for pressing oil from hemp plants in front of the White House while locked in a steel cage. And, as my former Mother Jones colleague Josh Harkinson chronicled after spending a wild evening drinking beers and smoking spliffs with Bronner back in 2014, the exec grew his own fair-trade, organic palm oil and coconut oil overseas when he couldnt source it elsewhere.

In 2019 alone, it donated nearly $7 millionabout 5 percent of its revenueto a variety of charitable causes. But of all causes last year, Dr. Bronners gave the biggest bit of changemore than $3 millionto drug policy reform. In the past, Dr. Bronners drug-related activism largely centered on cannabis legalization, but now the company is turning its energy to a radical, new frontier: psychedelics.

That was our focus when we met up last fall, back when it was, needless to say, a simpler time. News of the novel coronavirusand the corresponding wild demand for hygienic productswouldnt come until months later. Today, the soap company has seen demand for its products spike, but at the same time its kept a keen focus on supplying soap and sanitizers to front-line workers and at-risk communities. Its been nuts, Bronner told me over the phone last month. Production has been dialed up to 11, he said, and during the past couple of months, the company simply hasnt been able to meet all its orders. Still, as of mid-May, it had donated more than 25,000 units of hand sanitizer and soap to those in need; it had also given $20,000 to the San Diego COVID-19 Community Response Fund and $50,000 to Californias Immigrant Resilience Fund, which is helping to support the 2 million undocumented Californians who are not eligible for federal stimulus money. (Dr. Bronners also announced this week that its donating $25,000 to organizations, both in Minnesota and nationally, that are working to end anti-Black racism and abuse.)

Even without the increase in coronavirus-related demand, Dr. Bronners constructive capitalism model has seemed to work for its bottom line: The company has grown every year since at least 2010, and in 2019, brought in $129 million in salesa 60 percent jump from what it sold fiveyears earlier.

We definitely get told, angrily, to just stick to making soap by whoever doesnt like the position were taking on a given issue, Bronner said. But I would say overall, even people who disagree with us respect that were out there standing up for our beliefs.

As Bronner likes to say, Whatever your subculture is, were your soap.

Dr. Bronners founder, Emanuel Bronner, with liquid soapDr. Bronners

As we drove across town in his rented Kia Soul to the Peoples Cafe, a vegan coffee shop, Bronner told me, I totally believe that we have a right to use psychedelics responsibly in our own home, out in nature. He pointed out that research shows psilocybin, a psychedelic chemical found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, can have healing properties, especially for people struggling with mental health conditions like addiction and anxiety. As he wrote in a September blog post on the companys website, We firmly believe that the integration of psilocybin therapyis crucial to healing epidemic rates of depression, anxiety, and addiction. (In 2018 and again in 2019, the Food and Drug Administration granted breakthrough status to psilocybin for treating depression and major depressive disorder, a designation based on promising clinical evidence that allows companies to expedite a drugs development. Some of the most advanced findings have been with cancer patients, where research shows psilocybin can decrease depression and anxiety.)

Just before we met last year, Bronner and Hardwick had flown in from Portland, Oregon, where they had attended the official launch of an effort to essentially legalize magic mushrooms for these purposes. IP 34 is a state ballot initiative Oregon voters will likely consider in November that would legalize psilocybin for therapeutic uses in restricted settingsa possible model for the rest of the country, according to Bronner. Dr. Bronners, he had announced the day before, would donate $150,000 to the initiative. Last year, the company had financially supported the passage of Initiated Ordinance 301 in Denver, Colorado, which made history when it became the first city to decriminalize psilocybin. (Oakland, California, became the second major city to do the samelast summer.)

But like all things, the coronavirus threw a wrench into big plans for 2020. While Oregon had most of its signaturesto move the initiative forward before the pandemic hit, Bronnerannounced last month that the company would be giving an additional $1 million to the campaign supporting IP 34. Were stepping up bigger than we expected in Oregon, just because its a difficult fundraising landscape right now, Bronner told me. Its likely IP 34 will reach a goal of 145,000 signatures before the July 2 deadlineone way or the other, were gonna make it happen, Bronner said. Still, the company had planned to sponsor an Oregon-based conference on psilocybin therapy which was canceled because of COVID-19. The coronavirus also effectively ended a similar initiative in Californiathey didnt have enough signatures when COVID hit to finish the deal, Bronner said.

As we walked up to the restaurant, I asked Bronner about his own psychedelic experiences, which he has been open about in the past. He told me that his first encounter was with mushrooms, in a friends room while he was studying biology at Harvard. I remember looking down on my arm, and whoahe recalled thinkingwhat does it mean that Im in quantum continuum with my environment? At a quantum level, theres not a difference between me and the world. And when I eat and I poop, the world is pouring through me. He believes that in addition to helping people suffering from mental illness, this feeling of connectedness with the world brought on by psychedelics may help people be better stewards of the planet. Bronner said the response to his companys push for psilocybin therapy has been very positive, at least on social media.

While the Oregon psilocybin initiative is what Bronner saidbetween bites of a vegan chicken quinoa burrito and a vegan omelet he split with Hardwickhe was most excited about for 2020, he was still focused on the broader mission of fair cannabis policy. States including Montana, South Dakota, and Arizona could see recreational, adult-use pot on the ballot in November, meaning these will be the key battleground states for Dr. Bronners. (Efforts in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Ohio have stalled out due to COVID, organizers say.) In all, the company plans to spend north of $2 millionin 2020 on drug policy reform, split between support for legalizing cannabis, approving psilocybin therapy, and replacing jail time with addiction treatment. (Ballot initiatives on jail diversion are in the works in Oregon and Washington, though its unclear if these initiatives will have enough signatures to qualify.) Dr. Bronners support will translate to donations, but also social and marketing resources, maybe even some limited-edition soap bottles.Dr. Bronners has in the past printed labels to build support for issues including GMO labeling, minimum wage, and regenerative organic agriculture. Its currently prepping a special bottle dedicated to integrating psychedelic therapy to launch in September, according to Bronner.

Its almost like, maybe this company is too good.Initially, I wondered if Dr. Bronners was practicing some kind of dark magic; how could an activist company, an unapologetic one at that, also be so profitable? Oh, and did I mention Dr. Bronners caps executives salaries at five times that of the lowest-paid employee? Im pretty much a glass-half-full kind of person, but still, I wanted to find something to latch on to, be skeptical of, poke holes in, or, at the very least, find ridiculous. While maybe there was just a little bit of the latter, what I saw really was a refreshing kind of corporate existence in an era when a self-serving business executive is literally running the country. Its definitely a more sucky environment, Bronner says of working for reform under Trump, but [George H.W.] Bush sucked, you know? Its not new. You just kind of keep workingeven under Obama, there was plenty of shitty things. You just gotta do what you can.

Toward the end of lunch, I asked Bronner which of the then-plentiful Democratic presidential candidates he liked. He said he didnt have a favorite and hadnt really been following the campaigns, but said he supported senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, though he reallyliked Sen. Cory Booker. Finishing off a cardamom chai tea with oat milk, Bronner said Booker, who has backed legislation to legalize cannabis nationwide, is super dope. Getting at least one prediction right about 2020, he added, I mean, he doesnt have much of a chance, but hes awesome.

I want to give him 420 bucks, Bronner said to Hardwick. Remind me were going to give him 420 bucks. (I checked back later; he did.)

Online Gambling Trending Upwards in Q1 2020 TheCork.ie – TheCork.ie

6 June 2020By Tom Conwaynews@TheCork.ie

The online gambling industry has grown in the first quarter of 2020. Lockdown is one of the reasons for that with 41% of people opening a new online betting account.

The first three months of 2020 have not been easy for most businesses. Yet, the online gambling industry has continued to grow despite this years economic challenges.

Why Has Online Gambling Increased?

Increases in online gambling and the current economic climate are heavily related. One poll has found that people who already used online casinos tend to gamble more when at home for more of the day. Online casino sites are a type of entertainment when used responsibly, which makes them one other way to kill time when on lockdown.

The same study reported in The Guardian uncovered that most people had reduced their online gambling habits since the lockdown. The surge in online betting is, therefore, a result of a minority of people gambling more rather than the majority.

Online Casinos Profit from Sports Cancellations

One reason that most people claim to gamble less during this period is because of the postponement of sports. Sports betting is a massive cog in the online gambling industry, especially in the UK where horse racing, golf championships and The Premier League all receive a lot of attention in bookmaker stores.

A spokesman for PartyCasino, one of the arms of GVC that has not been adversely affected, said that while the company has managed to cope and adjust in these hard times, the recent completion of the merger with Ladbrokes and Coral placed importance on seeing their offline gambling establishments open soon. Once stores open up once more, as well as the best Cork casinos, the gambling industry of 2020 is set to rise exponentially.

Not All Bad News for Sports Betting

Sports may be cancelled, but it has not been all bad news for sports betting markets. Some sports fans have found a new way to bet on matches and their favourite teams. Instead of watching heir heroes take to the field, they are now watching gamers in eSports competitions. Lots of sports bookmakers are offering odds on official games.

You can place your sports bet, grab a beer and sit back to watch the big game hoping your team wins just like you would have done in the past.

Concerns Surrounding Gambling Problems During Lockdown

There have been some concerns among MPs in the UK and governing bodies that the lockdown would result in new gambling problems. For example, over 40% of people have opened a new betting account since it has all began. They fear the economic or employment instability would push some people to chase losses more than they would in normal circumstances.

Some countries put measures in place to stop this from happening. Spain banned gambling ads during the time, and the UK debated daily betting limits. However, the latter plans were never implemented because it could push people towards illegal underground casinos without such restrictions. Thankfully, in the UK, the credit card ban on betting sites came into force during the lockdown, which would go some way to protecting vulnerable players.

Yet Another Niche ETF Launches: Digital Sports Betting and Online Casinos – Barron’s

Posted: at 5:05 pm

Text size

There may not be hockey or basketball, but investors can now place their bets on a niche exchanged-trade fund that invests in digital sports wagering and online casinos.

Roundhill Investments, which has an esports ETF that is up 28.5% since its inception a year ago, on Thursday launched the Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF (ticker: BETZ).

The ETF is designed to track the online sports betting and online casino sector, according to Roundhill. Holdings include names like DraftKings, (DKNG), FanDuel parent Flutter Entertainment (FLTR:Ireland), and even traditional gaming firms invested in the space like Eldorado Resorts (ERI) and Penn National Gaming (PENN). But it also includes firms that provide infrastructure or technology to such companies, like Kambi Group (KMBIF:Sweden) and Gan (GAN).

Roundhill describes it as the first ETF globally designed to track the online sports betting and online casino sector.

The esports ETF, called Roundhill BITKRAFT Esports & Digital Entertainment ETF (NERD), has assets of $17 million. The new ETF has $1.5 million in assets under management.

Thematic ETFs have been gaining traction, particularly those that fit with a stay-at-home environment for many Americans, including cloud computing, robotics and videogames, Todd Rosenbluth, head of ETF & mutual fund research at CFRA, said in an email.

Investors need to truly believe in the long term investment theme to use a small portion of their portfolios assets to either of these themes as the risk and the reward is much higher, he said, referring to the themes of these two ETFs.

Roundhill co-founder Will Hershey told Barrons his firm seeks to find sectors it thinks are a secular growth story, esports and online sports betting being two of them.

In the case of online sports betting and online casino you not only have tailwinds from a broader shift from brick and mortar to digital, but also regulatory momentum, particularly in the U.S., Hershey wrote in an email.

Though more than 15 states allow online sports gambling in some capacity, only a few like New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada offer online casino-style gambling. But budget deficits caused by Covid-19 has led some bulls to speculate holdouts will expand their offerings to raise tax revenue.

On the regulatory side, I expect that states will move quickly towards full legalization, especially due to the budget deficits that have arisen due to COVID-19, Hershey added.

The hottest name in the ETF, Draftkings, went public in April through a merger with special-purpose acquisition firm Diamond Eagle Acquisition. Even with sports out of the picture, the company has found alternatives like ping pong, Korean baseball, and even professional videogaming to help fill the void. The stock has posted triple-digit percentage gains since the Diamond Eagle merger on April 27.

In total, the Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF has 30 holdings, with exposure to 13 countries. The ETF was up 1.7% to $15.87 on Thursday.

Can You Beat the Game in Online Gambling? | Invision Game Community – Invision Game Community

Posted: at 5:05 pm

Although we know that the house will always have an advantage when it comes to online gambling, the question is if you can do something to increase your chances of winning. The gamer mentality means that we must at least try to find a way to beat the game.

Now, exploits and hacks dont count. If you find an exploit you will be richly rewarded by the operator and that issue will be patched, and if you hack the system you will be prosecuted. So, we must find legal and legitimate means to try and beat the system.

Regretfully, math is not in our favor. Even if we were to extrapolate the RNG (Random Number Generator) used by the gambling companies, the processing power needed to predict even an approximate number would be staggering.

But, there are other ways to push our advantage, especially now when the market is on the rise. In the end, beating the game with a D rank still counts, meaning that we just need to pull out more value from the casino than we invested.

Although some might prefer the Dark Souls approach of hitting your head on the wall before you figure everything out, for online games that can become quite costly. Also, the rule of large numbers combined with the gambling algorithm means that your winnings will start to resemble the final odds, which is less than 100% RTP at all times, for all games.

The solution is to play smart and test the waters before you jump in. You need to know the stakes, know your odds, and use everything provided both from the operators themselves and independent online casino reviewers to get ahead.

Finally, you want to have fun. The best way to draw value from playing games is to have fun and entertain yourself. We dont play AAA games for the loot crates, we shouldnt be playing online casino games just for the money.

The bankroll you will need will depend on the game you will play, but online games are generally cheaper than ever going in a traditional casino.

Slots and spinners will have lower stakes per spin than traditional games like roulette, poker, or blackjack, but the latter doesnt need to have exorbitant sums for you to play. Because online casinos dont have a limited number of tables, they are okay to let you play with 10 chips, or even less.

Also, you might want to ask for a demo and play with virtual money before you get your footing into the game. This way the stakes are still your feeling of winning or losing, but you wont need to give any actual money at that time.

The important factor here is not to confuse the Return to Player frequency, which is usually well known for any game, with the odds of winning, or the odds of leaving even.

For games like poker, the odds of winning are much better than the average RTP. Here your odds to win are divided by the number of players in the game and their relative skills and bankroll.

The case is the exact opposite when it comes to slots and spinner games. Depending on the features of the game, the odds of you hitting anything will be between 7% and 15%, with half of those wins being free spins.

The RTP for some of these games is as high as 99.5%, meaning that if you play an infinite number of games you will, eventually, lose 5 on every $10 you have invested. Games with higher payouts where you can win millions usually dwell on the lower end of both chances and RTP, but have that enticing seven-figure number if you find yourself to be one of those few lucky winners.

But, if you win before your advantages and bonuses dry up, you will be in the green, and that can be considered winning the game.

Because of the quick rise in online gambling during the last few years, and especially the last few months, the biggest advantage you can take now is a signup bonus. Some operators will double, triple, or even quadruple the money you pay in to entice you to stay playing.

Obviously, you cant pull out that money right away, but you can slowly turn it into winnings, which you can withdraw whenever you want.

And, once the bonuses, free spins, and other benefits dry up, just take your money and change the platform or operator to a one that will give you another bonus.

This way, even though you might not be winning mathematically, you will still be having loads of fun even on a slim budget, and significantly increase your chances of staying in the green for as long as you like the game you are playing.

Tougher Regulation Ahead For The UK Gambling Market – Pokerfuse

Posted: at 5:05 pm

After years of extraordinary growth it seems that the UK online gambling market is facing a challenging future. Aside from disruption to sporting events caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, a cross party group of MPs in parliament, backed by loud voices from within the British media, are optimistic that this year their calls for reform of the industry will be heard. They believe that the gambling laws set out in the Acts of 2005 and 2014 are too liberal and that a gambling addiction crisis can only be tackled by tougher regulation on advertising and casino operations.

Gross Gambling Yield in the UK currently tops 14 billion annually and for over a decade the territory has been one of the most profitable for betting firms. However, in the last five years there have been growing concerns that the proliferation of advertising on TV, online and in high profile sports, has normalised gambling activity and led to an epidemic of problem gambling. A recent survey commissioned by the Gambleaware charity estimates that 2.7% of the adult population have a gambling addiction. Experts in the industry have contested this figure and say it is an overestimate, but reformers in parliament say the numbers are further evidence that reform is needed.

This month a parliamentary committee will report back after a 12-month investigation into the social impact of online gambling in the UK. Their findings are likely to form the basis for a new Gambling Act which could be passed into UK law in the next 2 years.

Here are the most likely outcomes of reform.

Online slot games have been identified as a direct cause of gambling addiction. The popularity of these games has led to a spike in the number of new slot sites launching every year and there are now 1,000s of online casinos in the UK where players can spin the reels. Currently it is possible to play at 100 or more per spin. Campaigners want to see the maximum stake drop to just 2, and with that, new restrictions on how much a player can deposit each week, in line with the kind of numbers being proposed in Sweden and Germany.

The growth of the gambling market in the UK has been driven by extraordinary advertising spend on TV, online via Google and social media, and in sports sponsorship. More than half of the Premier League soccer teams are sponsored by a gambling company, and betting brands regularly advertise around high profile games. A new gambling act is likely to ban advertising during sporting events and on social media where underage persons and those with gambling problems may be exposed to betting brands and offers.

High rollers are the prized customers of any casino, online or offline, and all operators carefully manage their VIP base to retain their custom and avoid losing them to rival firms. In the UK this practice has come under close scrutiny as addicted gamblers have described how their efforts to stop betting were hampered by VIP managers offering incentives to continue spending, even when they asked to be removed from contact lists. The Gambling Commission and MPs are considering a full ban on VIP programs and restrictions on the amount of bonus money and free bets that can be awarded each month.

All these updates to UK regulations, likely to be enshrined in a new Gambling Act, will have a significant impact on the market for both betting firms and punters in years to come. Expect a battle this summer between the industry and reformers over how far the new laws will go. We wont have long to wait to find out what the outcome will be.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson Returns to 2020 Election Odds at +10000 – Sports Betting Dime

Posted: at 5:05 pm

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is at +10000 to win the 2020 Presidential Election. Photo by Aaron Sanchez (Flickr).

Even as the 2020 United States Presidential Election seems to be honed in on two candidates (Donald Trump and Joe Biden), there has been rampant speculation in recent days as to who else might jump in.

First it was Andrew Cuomo and then Mark Cuban and now odds are up on Dwayne The Rock Johnson. Is there any chance The Peoples Champion gets into the 2020 race?

Odds as of June 4th, 2020.

One of the main reasons why other candidates are coming up the conversation is that it appears many people on the left are not comfortable with Biden. The former Vice President should have a basic layup in the race for the White House in 2020 but a number of issues continue to plague him. While he leads nationally, few feel confident.

One of the main reasons for it is the continuous run of gaffes that Biden keeps making. From telling African American voters they arent black enough if they dont vote for him to saying that cops should shoot people in the leg instead of the heart, hes really mucking up what should be a very easy presidential run.

While The Rock has been off the board at times in terms of the 2020 presidential election odds, hes now back on it at +10000. Its pretty clear that the oddsmakers think there is a slight chance of this happening.

In my opinion, there is none.

To start, hes not even in the race. Secondly, hes not a politician. Usually, you cant win these things based on popularity alone. There has been no indication of what his platform would be. Does he want healthcare for all? How would he stop the riots? What does he think about taxes?

In the case that hed run as a Democrat, you have to realize that Biden already has a ton of delegates. If the party opted not to go with Biden and instead switch to The Rock in whichever way they would really be overthrowing the will of the people.

In the case that anyone suggests he run as an independent, that would only split the vote on the left and assure Trump a victory in 2020. They dont want that, so running as an independent also doesnt make sense.

At this point, I dont take these odds seriously. Cuban is on the board but hes already said hes not running for President, so I dont think there is much credence to The Rock running either.

I could see him eventually deciding to move into politics but now is not the time. Hed do more harm than good in the eyes of the people that he needs to back him to make a serious run.
