Project Reunion: Microsoft’s unified app strategy is still missing one piece – ZDNet

Posted: June 1, 2020 at 3:44 am

Microsoft held its first Build Developers Conference in September 2011. At last week's virtual Build 2020 conference, nearly nine years later, the company was still trying to clean up the mess after an experiment that went horribly wrong.

If you don't remember Build 2011, allow me to refresh your memory: That was when Microsoft released the Developer Preview of Windows 8. It was the first time the outside world had seen the company's vision for a new operating system to run on hardware that was designed to compete with Apple's iPad.

What made Windows 8 different was the promise that it would bridge the two worlds. It would run all your existing Win32 software, but a major selling point of the new OS was its ability to also run so-called modern apps that would either take over the entire screen or could be snapped alongside another app.

The Windows 8 Developer Preview included a roster of these modern apps that had literally been written as "How I spent my summer vacation" projects by Microsoft interns.

The "modern" apps included with the Windows 8 Developer Preview were demo apps written by student interns

And that was just the first of many unforced errors that doomed Windows 8 and condemned the engineers who worked on its successors to years of clean-up duty.

Microsoft's vision was that the two app families would be separate but unequal. Modern apps, running on touch-enabled hardware using the Metro user interface, represented the future and would eventually replace the legacy desktop apps that had been the bedrock of the PC revolution for several decades.

Microsoft's customers said, "Not so fast." Those demo apps were replaced over the next year by more capable (but still underpowered), professionally written apps. After sampling those apps, most customers formed the general perception that their legacy Win32 apps (including Microsoft's own desktop Office apps) were for "real work" while modern apps were wimpy, dumbed-down, and generally not worth the effort.

You don't get a second chance to make a first impression, or so the saying goes. And that first impression stuck.

With the launch of Windows 10 five years ago, Microsoft tried to make those modern apps more palatable by allowing them to run in resizable windows alongside legacy desktop apps, but customers continued to stay away from the Microsoft Store, preferring those desktop apps, like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop and QuickBooks and ... well, you get the idea.

It didn't help that the company kept telling developers to throw away their legacy code and build new apps instead. The Universal Windows Platform (UWP) was a shaky bet to begin with, but it became a complete non-starter once Microsoft gave up its ambitions for mobile devices. How many developers of productivity apps want them to also run on Xbox consoles or in HoloLens headsets?

Which brings us to last week's Project Reunion announcement. Microsoft long ago renamed the Win32 API to just the plain ol' Windows API, and now it's rolling up that API with the UWP API so that developers can add fancy modern features like the Share panel to their desktop apps.

This is one of those ideas that's so obvious you wonder why it didn't happen five years ago, and then you remember that the mobile dream was still alive for Microsoft in 2015. You could also look at Apple, which is creeping along at a glacial pace in its incremental efforts to turn iPad into a replacement for the MacBook, and you realize that trying to unify the mobile-desktop worlds is much harder than it looks.

If you want to see side-by-side examples of how far Microsoft went off the track and how much work it had to do to course-correct, look no further than the default browsers for Windows in 2013 and 2020.

Seven years ago, Windows 8 had two Internet Explorers: the classic legacy desktop app, with support for ancient features like ActiveX, and a full-screen, Metro-enabled version that played well in the Windows 8 sandbox but was just woefully out of place on a desktop PC or a laptop without a touchscreen.

Microsoft even managed to convince Mozilla and Google to develop Metro-style browsers before they pulled the rug out from under everyone.

Fast-forward to 2020 and Microsoft Edge, the new default browser for Windows 10 based on the open source Chromium engine, manages to incorporate those modern features and support touchscreen devices without alienating fans of legacy desktop apps.

There's your proof of concept that the old and new worlds can be united successfully, but there's one piece missing.

Please note that the new Edge is not delivered by way of the Microsoft Store but instead arrives through a very conventional mechanism, as a downloadable Setup file.

That is not a minor detail. Microsoft isn't even trying to ship its new browser or its most lucrative software product (Office/Microsoft 365) through the Store. Those consequential decisions are not a vote of confidence in the Store as a model for delivering packaged apps, especially to consumers and small businesses.

In theGitHub documentation for Project Reunion, Microsoft basically throws up its hands on the question of how new apps will make it to customers' desktops:

Your app does not need to be packaged to use Project Reunion functionality. ... If you have your own installer, we'll have instructions to carry the Project Reunion components with your app and how to install them using some common installers. ... Some parts of Project Reunion work better if your app is a UWP app, or Desktop Bridge, or has identity.

As my colleague Mary Jo Foley noted earlier this year, the Microsoft Store for Business is about to be deprecated, and the future of the Microsoft Store for consumers and SMB is uncertain, as "officials across various teams at the company have been trying to come up with a concerted strategy. ... My contacts say Microsoft is still focused on coming up with approaches via which users could trust, discover and download signed apps without them necessarily being in the Store."

And that's the missing piece of the Project Reunion puzzle. Microsoft's been reasonably successful at building tools that make its developers happy, including a new command-line Windows Package Manager that simplifies the task of standing up a dev workstation.

Helping developers write new apps is one thing. Convincing customers to adopt those new apps as replacements for their legacy desktop apps and Web-based services is a completely different challenge. So far, at least, Microsoft has failed to crack that code.

Slack CEO: Microsoft is unhealthily preoccupied with killing us – The Verge

Posted: at 3:44 am

Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield claimed earlier this month that Microsoft Teams isnt a competitor to Slack. In an interview with The Verge, Butterfield has revealed that, inside Slack, the company feels that Microsoft is perhaps unhealthily preoccupied with killing us, and Teams is the vehicle to do that.

Butterfield sat down with Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel for a wide-ranging interview that discusses Slacks battles with Microsoft Teams, the future of Slack, new Slack features, and much more. Its well worth a listen.

Butterfield expands on why he thinks Microsoft is unhealthily preoccupied with Slack and compares Teams to more of a competitor to Zoom. Slack obviously has its own voice and video calling features, but its not the primary focus of the app, and often, businesses integrate Zoom or Ciscos WebEx instead. Microsoft has been moving businesses from Skype for Business to Teams, which traditionally focused on voice and video calling.

Ultimately, Butterfield thinks Microsoft is trying to force the Teams comparison because Microsoft benefits from the narrative that Teams is very competitive with Slack. Even though the reality is its principally a voice and video calling service.

Butterfield highlights a Microsoft press release from July last year that specifically mentions Slacks daily active users compared directly to Teams. No software company has ever done that, explains Butterfield. Like, maybe at the height, Oracle would do something like that ... But literally, no one else would ever do that. Microsoft has never done that before.

Butterfield believes this speaks to the commitment they have there and that Microsofts efforts are uniquely targeted at Slack. He even references a Verge interview where Jared Spataro, corporate vice president of Microsoft 365, claims Slack wont have the breadth and depth to reinvent work. Butterfield says if you Google for Slack Spataro, youll find a bunch of shit-talking about how Slack isnt very good, but the same cant be found for Spataro and Okta, Google, or Amazon.

Butterfield thinks this is because Microsofts entire Office empire is threatened if Slack does well, whereas if Zoom does well, it only threatens video and voice calling. In a different universe where Slack is incredibly successful over the next two years and 98 percent of knowledge workers use Slack, it does matter to Microsoft because the relative importance of email is hugely diminished, explains Butterfield. If email becomes less important, then that whole $35, $40 billion-a-year collaboration productivity business unit is threatened.

TMS ends the year, honors students with virtual award ceremony – thechronicle-news.com

Posted: at 3:44 am

On Wednesday, May 20, Trinidad Middle School hosted a virtual Honors Award Ceremony with a large number of staff and student leaders tuning in via Zoom to announce awardees, who were also present virtually. The ceremony officially brought to a close the 2019-2020 school year.

TMS Principle Deana Pachelli and Assistant Principle Michael Guadagnoli began the ceremony from inside the gym where a camera and microphone were connected and several staff members gathered, all wearing facemasks.

GPA 3.5 or higher cumulative grades awardees

Jeannie Ackerman, TMS teacher, presented awards for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders with a three and a half or higher cumulative grade point average.

Let it be known that Trinidad Middle School students did not give up on education just because of COVID-19, said Ackerman

Sixth graders acknowledged were Andreas Bowman, Jacob Bowman, Linda Diaz, Anjalina Gandarilla, Xavier Garcia, Edward Gonzales, Lillian Gonzales, Harlem Kulcyk, Arianna Lynn, Isaiah Menchaca, Jasmine Ross, Serenity Samora, Anthony Sandoval, Brianna Sandoval, Leila Sedillo, Itzel Silva, Maliya Torres, and Yurem Zamora-Munoz.

Seventh graders acknowledged included Laura Adeyelu, Jesse Apodaca, Aaliyah Berry, Antolin Gandarilla, Easton Jack, Izabella Jackson, Azucena Martinez, Evanne Montez, Andres Romero, Nathan Sandoval, Alyce Sisneros, Nevaeha Trujillo, Summer Ward and Xander Wilson.

Lastly, eighth graders acknowledged were Zoee Cappellucci, Alyssa Cordova, Gabrielle Gonzales, Kayla Gonzales, Alexia Hall, Anna Holder, Corey Hosseinzadeh, Joseph Martinez, McKayla McDonald, Nevaeh Padilla, Isabell Smith, Ethan Taylor, Elijah Torres, Monserrad Viera-Flores, Cydney Vigil and Kylie Wilson.

Additionally, several TMS students were acknowledged for straight As for the first three quarters, maintaining a 90 or above. In sixth grade, these students were Harlem Kulcyk, Arianna Lynn, Anthony Sandoval and for eighth grade was Kylie Wilson.

Third quarter perfect attendance

TMS teacher, Leanna Dunn read the names of the TMS students who had perfect attendance throughout the third quarter. She explained they had started an attendance challenge but complications with the coronavirus made the original end date unobtainable.

We started on February 3 and was supposed to go through April 16, said Dunn, but we were interrupted. We still want to give out awards today.

Students with perfect third quarter attendance included Serenity Bowman, Cristian Carpio Estrada, Roman Chavira, Alyssa Cordova, Lillian Gonzales, Dakota Hicks, Marlen Mayen Hilario, McKayla McDonald, Madison Otten, Vanessa Port, Camrin Rino, Jasmine Ross, Serenity Samora, Elijah Torres and Maliya Torres.

Since the students were unable to do a pizza party and movie like they had planned, Dun said they would all receive a $10 gift card for McDonalds and were put in a drawing for a Tablet with a keyboard and a hover board.

Elijah Torres was the drawing winner for the tablet and keyboard and Jasmine Ross won the hover board after her name was drawn following Torres.

Trinidad Rotary Club Kindness Award

This year, TMS introduced a new honors award, Trinidad Rotary Club Kindness Award. For 2020, 10 individuals were acknowledged originally as candidates. With COVID-19 complications and how well the students responded, TMS decided unanimously to honor all 10 candidates as recipients of the award for 2020.

These students were sixth graders Serenity Samora, Alayna Nye, Jaidyn Trujillo; seventh graders Andres Romero, Xander Wilson, Matthew Trujillo; and eighth graders McKayla McDonald, Lance Payne, Nicholas Chavez and Kylie Wilson.

Numerous other teachers from science, to sports, to music presented honors and acknowledgement for their students during the ceremony, each either from their homes or from the gym.

Deana Pachelli wrapped up the event thanking staff, students, and parents for pushing through the difficulties to finish out the very unique school year.

We couldnt have done all this without the parents, and students, and the staffs cooperation, said Pachelli. It definitely was a sprint to get to the finish line and everybody stepped up to make that happen. I just want to say thank you parents. This staff believes in your kids and they are so appreciative of you supporting us through this most difficult time. We miss you terribly and we love you.

IndyCar drivers prepare to enter a ‘new world’ of racing when the season resumes June 6 at Texas Motor Speedway – The Dallas Morning News

Posted: at 3:43 am

FORT WORTH With an unwelcome assist from the COVID-19 pandemic, IndyCars traditionally lengthy offseason will have reached 258 consecutive days when the green flag drops on the 2020 season-opening Genesys 300 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday.

Josef Newgardens victory in last summers night race on TMS 1.5-mile oval helped propel the Team Penske ace to his second NTT IndyCar Series championship in three years at the season finale in Monterey, Calif., on Sept. 22.

Start the clock.

The global pandemic that has marked the end of the innocence for American spectator sports began in early March. Widespread public health concerns prompted sanctioning body IndyCar to revise, reshuffle and reduce its original schedule from 17 to 14 races, move the tradition-rich running of the 104th Indianapolis 500 from May into the dog days of August, and devise a rigid set of social distancing protocols.

As a result of the latter, the Genesys 300 billed as Americas Original Nighttime IndyCar Race since its debut in 1997 will become the first series event run without fans watching in the grandstands.

Yeah, its a strange time, right? said Newgarden, a 29-year-old native of Nashville. I think its been tough for everybody right now, regardless of what industry or way of life youre operating in. A lot of things have been taken away, our passions and our jobs a bit altered. Its going to be a new world for us racing here.

Responding to public health concerns, the race has been shortened from 248 laps to 200. IndyCar will operate a condensed schedule with practice, qualifying and the race on the same day. Teams are scheduled to take the green flag at 7:10 p.m., with network broadcast coverage on NBC starting at 7 p.m. NBC Sports Network is scheduled to air a half-hour preview at 6:30 p.m.

We have some tasks at hand; we know what they are, said Newgarden, who will carry the No. 1 on his Team Penske Chevrolet as reigning champion. I know the first couple of weeks of this lockdown in the United States, it felt quite hopeless. Now we feel pretty positive that we have something to work towards.

Indeed, in his role as promoter extraordinaire, TMS President and General Manager Eddie Gossage recently dubbed the Genesys 300 one of the most important races IndyCar has ever held, adding, People are starving for sports programming, so theres an opportunity to have strong TV ratings around the country and around the globe.

Newgarden and popular Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe said they have watched NASCARs three major touring series make successful returns, without fans, at Darlington Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway since May 17. Drivers, crewmen and officials have been wearing masks while social distancing on pit road and even during TV interviews.

Its been actually quite fun to watch the NASCAR guys, Newgarden said. Were going to be looking to do much of the same.

Similarly to NASCAR, Newgarden and Hinchcliffe agreed the Genesys 300 is likely to draw curious first-time viewers to the open-wheel series.

Do I think its a hallmark day for the series? Yeah, absolutely, said Hinchcliffe, 33, whose three-race deal in an Andretti Autosport Honda is being sponsored by Genesys. Do I think its a make-or-break day? No, not really. I think IndyCar racing is going to get back to what we do, and thats going to continue for years to come regardless. Certainly we want this to be a successful race. We want it to be a good show. Were on network in prime time. Theres a lot of reasons that we really want this one to go well.

But you know, Eddie needs to make it sound like its the biggest race in history, so that way more people tune in and thats totally fair.

Newgarden noted the TMS night race, typically featuring razor-thin finishes, has evolved into must-see TV.

Its always had a storied place in IndyCar history, Newgarden said. But in these current situations, without a doubt its going to be a very important event for us. Is it the most important event in IndyCar history? I have no idea if it is or not.

It will be, for sure, an event to get right. A lot of pressure. But I think everyone involved will really be able to rise to the occasion and do a great job.

Work begins on Hong Kong rail extension – The Construction Index

Posted: at 3:43 am

Rail operator MTR Corporation (MTRCL) is to be invited to proceed with the detailed planning and design of the Tuen Mun South (TMS) extension.

The project, which will extend the West Rail Line from Tuen Mun Station southwards by about 2.4km, is one of seven recommended railway schemes in Hong Kongs Railway Development Strategy 2014.

A new TMS Station will be built near Tuen Mun Ferry and there will also be an intermediate station in Tuen Mun Area 16, to unlock the area's development potential.

The extension largely runs along the Tuen Mun River. It is designed to improve railway access for the community south of the current Tuen Mun town centre and connectivity to Tuen Mun Ferry Pier.

Approximately 60,000 people within the 500m catchment of the TMS Station, while there are about 49,000 residents living within the 500m catchment area around the proposed A16 Station.

A statement from the Transport & Housing Bureau said: The TMS Extension with the A16 Station will offer an alternative commuting choice to the residents in the vicinity and divert more commuters to rail-based transport, which may help relieve the congestion of the existing roads.

Furthermore, the provision of the proposed A16 Station is essential for unleashing the potential for residential development at the A16 site and helps increase the housing supply.

The government will negotiate with the MTRCL on the funding arrangement of the project, which is expected to start construction in 2023 for completion in 2030.

Alpega’s Freight Exchange, Teleroute, launches an API interface and a new mobile App to help their increasing number of customers work even more…

BARCELONA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Teleroute, one of the leading freight exchanges in Europe, in its objective to continue responding to the needs of its growing number of customers, launched two major improvements to its current offering: an advanced API interface and a new version of its mobile application. Both are focused on closing a transport deal and finding new business partners more efficiently.

Today more than ever it is crucial for freight forwarders and transport companies to be able to quickly respond to the increasing demands of their clients. Teleroutes new API interface allows companies to save a significant amount of time and avoid errors by posting their loads in the freight exchange directly from their TMS (Transport Management System). At the same time, companies can find new qualified partners via the interface, in order to increase business opportunities and create a stable network of collaborators to optimize all transport operations. The new API interface is integrated with more than 50 TMS solutions and has no extra cost to Teleroutes customers.

It is no surprise that more and more transport companies are struggling to find freight and have to run empty. In order to help their clients in this situation, Teleroute improved its mobile app and now users are able to perform multiple freight searches simultaneously, to contact the offering company in one click and offer truck capacity. Additionally, this new mobile app provides the possibility of accessing the large amount of freights and trucks offered in Wtransnet, leading freight exchange in Iberia and also part of Alpega Group.

Both actions respond to the commitment of Teleroute to continue investing in technology that really helps the transport sector, on which Fabrice Douteaud, Alpega Group marketplace COO, affirms:

Our mission is to provide the transport sector smart tools to facilitate the collaboration and help our clients in their day to day challenges. With this goal in mind, we are working hard every day to improve the benefits we offer through our platform in order to provide greater added value.
