Christ Provides the Antidote to Fear Amid Coronavirus – National Catholic Register

COMMENTARY: Turn to the Savior of the world who conquered death when fear or anxiety strikes.

The global coronavirus pandemic has made it clear how interconnected, vulnerable and fragile mankind is--and how undivided we are in our unity against death. As fear of this disease haunts Americans' minds and hearts to the point it's paralyzing our nation, I'm reminded how many times Christ told us, "Be not afraid," and I feel compelled to ask a serious question. If we as Catholics truly believe that when we receive Christ in the Eucharist were receiving the fountain of immortality, shouldnt we be more stouthearted in the face of this news than the secular culture around us is?

As we journey through Lent, joyfully anticipating the bright new day of Christs Easter Resurrection, this seems an appropriate time to take stock of our spiritual lives and remember what that word salvation really means. When the prophet Isaiah 12:2 says, I will trust and not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation, whats he talking about? What exactly has Christ saved us from?

Well, of course, the short answer is that hes saved us from death.

Hold on a minute. Didnt Christ come to save us from sin? Yes, but theres more to it than that, explains Wyoming Catholic College Byzantine chaplain Father David Anderson. St. Athanasius says the problem with us isnt ultimately sin. God could have forgiven all the sins of the world gratuitously without the Incarnation. But to get rid of death, which is the source of sin, God had to become incarnate and take upon himself not only sin but also death. He points to a quotation in the Book of Wisdom: God created man for life and immortality, but by the envy of the devil, death [not sin] entered into the world.

So our Lord Jesus Christ our Savior, the eternal Son of God, comes to die voluntarily in order that he might destroy the power of death, Father Anderson continues. Thats what we are preparing for now as we journey through Lent toward the greatest celebration of the year the destruction of death. The destruction of death includes the destruction of sin, but sin is the symptom and death is the disease.

In the Byzantine tradition, Father Anderson adds, hundreds of times in the course of the Paschal celebration, were going to sing, Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death. Sometimes that word trampling is translated as conquering. But the original word in Greek literally means he stomped and smashed it to bits.

Furthermore, Father Anderson reminds us, eternal life doesn't begin only at some point "after we die." Eternal life in Christ begins now.

In a reassuring March 13 letter on the coronavirus, Bishop Benedict Aleksiychuk of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Nicholas in Chicago reminded the faithful that every test sent is by the will of God and that much information we receive through the mass media is incomplete or incorrect.

We are a people of faith, and that is why we see Gods Providence in this event which is teaching todays world to stop, listen and understand the language of God, the language of his mercy and love, Bishop Benedict wrote. Observing that this situation gives us a unique opportunity to love one another, he added, Let us protect ourselves, not only from this virus, which can destroy our body, but also from the virus that can kill our soul, through panic, anger, censure and confusion.

As the coronavirus reveals just how vulnerable we are as a race and a nation, fears of sickness and death have many Americans running scared. Thankfully, as people who know the meaning of salvation, weve been given the faith and hope to rise above fear and be for those around us a center of calm in the midst of the storm.

The Vampire Diaries: The 10 Most Hated Storylines | ScreenRant – Screen Rant

Posted: at 6:02 am

Watching The Vampire Diarieswas often like a mad rush because so much happened in each episode. The momentum kept the fans watching for eight seasons, even after the central character, Elena was gone or "asleep." We were pulled in by the main characters' arcs and friendships. Additionally, the storylines were dramatic and interesting, pulling us in, making us want more.

RELATED: The Vampire Diaries Universe Top 10 Love Triangles

However, not every storyline was stellar; some became dull, or problematic, or even too dramatic. Which are the most hated storylines?

Damon finds out that his and Stefan's mother has been banished and imprisoned in a Gemini-coven prison world. He wants to bring her back, but she won't come without the heretics, witches-turned-vampire. When the group works to bring her friends back as well, Mother Salvatore appears to prefer the heretics to her sons, further rubbing the salt into both Stefan and Damon's wounds.

The heretics could have been interesting characters, but other than Valerie, the rest weren't given much screen time or allowed for much character development. We had Mary Louise and Nora, two heretic lovers who were never able to express their love in the world that they came from. So much more could have been done with their storyline. Additionally, all the heretics seemed to be devoted to Mother Salvatore, as if she were their mother. This loyalty was never really fully explored.

The Silas storyline was extremely dramatic. We learned where the doppelgangers started from--Silas and Amara. We also learned that Qetsiyah had cursed them, especially Amara who had to suffer supernatural beings walking through her in order to get to the other side.

Due to this role, Amara was desperate for a cure to her immortality. All of this could have been very interesting, and part of it was. However, the majority of this storyline became too melodramatic and diverted from the more interesting drama of our core group.

Stefan knew Valerie before either was a vampire. She was his first girlfriend prior to his all encompassing love for Katherine. We find out that Valerie still has a torch for Stefan, and that she had been pregnant with Stefan's child, losing it in a miscarriage. Knowing this complicated Stefan's feelings.

RELATED: The Vampire Diaries 10 Most Shameless Things Stefan Ever Did

Meanwhile, he had been assuring a jealous Caroline that she had nothing to fear about his past with Valerie. In the end, Stefan leaves Caroline (partly to save her), but he abandons her in that he doesn't even stay in touch. During this time, he is attached to Valerie. She is her girlfriend. He may have stayed with her due to their history, but it was clear that these two didn't have much of a future.

Once Stefan left and Caroline had the twins, she couldn't leave the twins. As much as she assured herself and others that she wasn't technically their mother, she felt attached to them. They had been magically transferred to her womb when their biological mother (Jo) was murdered, and Caroline carried them, giving birth to them. She couldn't help but love them, wanting to be in their lives. When she tried to convince herself that she loved Alaric, their father, it didn't ring true. It was more of a marriage of convenience and mutual respect, than that of love.

However, Alaric did seem to feel true romance for Caroline. This felt a little strange, especially since he had been a teacherat her school when Caroline was a high school student, and her best friend, Elena, was his first wive's daughter. This relationship had the yuck factor all over it.

This is another storyline that could have been more interesting. After all Jeremy inherited his powers as a vampire hunter, and his sister's friends are vampires--Elena became one, too. We do have moments when Damon is teaching him how to use his powers, which are light and fun. However, over all the brotherhood of the hunters proves dull.

RELATED: 10 Shows with Vampires If You Miss The Vampire Diaries

They were supposed to be presented as terrifying, even to the original vampires. It was hard to see Jeremy as anything other than Elena's sometimes annoying little brother. We would have loved to see Jeremy struggle more with his power and what it meant to him.

Rayna was a more interesting hunter than Jeremy. Built from the powers of multiple shamans, Rayna had an immortal focus on killing those she marked. Once she had marked you, you had very little luck of surviving. True, they tried to make Rayna more interesting by focusing on her history and her inability to change her hunting ways. Rayna even gave her powers to Bonnie, leaving Bonnie to sacrifice once again and with a thirst to kill her friends.

The problem with the Rayna storyline is that it got drawn out for so long and prevented our favorite characters from sharing the same space.

Of all the quick and nonsensical deaths, Tyler's is one of the worst. He ties with Vicki's. However, at this time, we finally got to know Tyler, see him grow, and see his connection to his friends. Elena had sent him off, telling him to get the future he deserved. Damon, wanting everyone to give up on him since he is under the influence of the Siren, kills Tyler.

Damon thinks that this is the one act that can't be forgiven by his brother and friends. Of course, his act doesn't work, and they all are Team Damon. Still, this quick killing of Tyler seemed a poor send-off to a beloved character--purposeless.

Alaric was transformed by Esther, the original witch and Klaus's mother, into an enhanced vampire. He is no ordinary vampire though, Esther gave him the power of an original vampire and enhanced that power even more. Alaric resurrected as a shadow of himself, now hating any vampires and any friends of vampires.

RELATED: The Vampire Diaries 10 Hidden Details about Mystic Falls You Didn't Notice

On one hand, it was interesting to see good-guy Alaric turn evil. However, he wasn't an evil part of himself, but rather a completely different character.

Bonnie becomes an extremely strong witch in her ability to adapt and grow. However, her friends both count on her and take advantage of her. She is made to sacrifice a lot for her friends: her family, her love, her powers, and even her life. She constantly lives or dies for others. Finally, in the last couple seasons, she seemed to be living her life, having her own narrative.

Still, this character deserved better than to be the one who constantly sacrificed for others. Her role shouldn't just be the friend. After all, she is the recipient of a long legacy of witch powers, a Bennett witch. More should have been done with that.

Finally, many fans had what they wanted--Damon and Elena as a couple. For seasons, Elena fought against her feelings for Damon. And for seasons, Damon had been trying to convince Elena to be with him instead of his brother, Stefan. It caused friction and tension between the two brothers, and it created an epic love triangle. After Elena becomes a vampire, she realizes that she loves Damon, choosing him over Stefan. Fans should all cheer, right?

Wrong. Since Damon made Elena a vampire, she became sired to him. Whatever Damon told her, she followed. This cheapens their relationship, and partially makes it seem that it's not an equal one, that Damon has power over Elena. She changes for him. Not a good sign to the beginnings of a relationship. Luckily, their relationship was able to change and develop. However, this wasn't a good way to start. Thus, their passionate session made fans cringe rather than feel happy for them.

The Annunciation with St Emidius, by Carlo Crivelli - 1486 National Gallery, London

Gospel of 25th March 2020 - Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. He went in and said to her, 'Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.' She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, 'Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God's favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.'

Mary said to the angel, 'But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?' 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you' the angel answered 'and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.' 'I am the handmaid of the Lord,' said Mary 'let what you have said be done to me.' And the angel left her.

Reflection on the Painting

In the summer of 1995 I moved to London, where I have lived ever since. One of the very first paintings I saw was this magnificent canvas by Carlo Crivelli, at the National Gallery. The burst of colours (and this photograph doesn't entirely do justice to the picture), the detail and symbolism of the composition moved me. Still when I see this painting now, it reminds me of the start of that new chapter in life. Like an old friend reminding you of good times, art has the power to remind us of past times.

We see the ray of light from the Holy Spirit descending upon Mary. The closed passage into the depth at the left and the flask holding pure water in Mary's bedroom refer to Our Lady's virginity. The two other figures in the foreground are the angel Gabriel and Saint Emidius, carrying a model of Ascoli Piceno, a town in Marche, Italy, of which he is the patron saint. It is not unusual to see a local saint effectively intervening and being depicted as part of a biblical event. The apple in the foreground represents the forbidden fruit from the Garden of Eden, and therefore serves as a symbol of sin. The cucumber, balanced on the edge of the painting towards the viewer, symbolises the reversal of sin: resurrection and redemption. The peacock is associated with immortality, because it was believed that its flesh never decayed.

A man on a bridge is reading a message handed to him by another man, delivered by the carrier pigeon in the cage beside them, a clever analogy of the message of the Annunciation itself. Around them the town goes on, oblivious to the events depicted. Only a small, innocent, pure child peering round the corner seems to be interested in what is happening. A whole world goes on its way, apparently oblivious to the new Christian chapter in history which has begun in this very scene. Only Mary is complete in her way of being ready, humble and available to respond to the Lord

Doctor Who: The Top 10 Tenth Doctor Episodes, Ranked According to IMDb – Screen Rant

Posted: at 6:02 am

For three seasons of Doctor Who, David Tennant's Tenth Doctor won Whovian hearts with his distinctive wit and depth as the most tortured Time Lord in the universe. This combination of humor and narrative complexity has made Ten one of the most beloved Doctors to date, and indeed, some of the most memorableWho storylines were conceived in this era.

RELATED:Doctor Who: 10 Most Shameless Things The Tenth Doctor Ever Did

Showrunner Russell T. Davies, along with writers like Davies's future successor Steven Moffat, helped create a world of intricate (sometimesquiteintricate) and mindblowing plots. Here are the top ten Tenth Doctor episodes, ranked according toIMDb:

The Doctor is not always a fan of his own longevity, but it's no surprise when mortal beings jump at the chance for immortality. In this first installment of a two-part story arc, the Doctor and his companion Martha (Freema Agyeman) insert themselves into an early-twentieth-century community to evade the Family of Blood, which wants to obtain the Doctor's Time Lord life span.

RELATED: Doctor Who: 5 Reasons Martha Was A Better Companion Than Clara (& Vice Versa)

To prevent this, the Doctor becomes human and assumes the identity of a teacher named John Smith. Martha is perhaps the real hero in this story, as the Doctor essentially orders her to "invent a life story for me, find me a setting, and integrate me." Stuck with a Time Lord who doesn't know who he is and has no power? Pretty tough luck for a companion.

This one-off episode from season four follows the Tenth Doctor as he attempts to discover the source of terror on a shuttle traversing the planet Midnight. Written by Russell T. Davies, the episode is an instance of the oft-used format inDoctor Who: isolation in an enclosed space, with a group of strangers that the Doctor must persuade into following his lead. In this case, the strangers run into some slight trouble with, well, getting possessed.

As the crew members lose their calm, the Doctor doesn't always maintain his, either. "If we're going to get out of this, then you need me," Tennant's angry Ten exclaims at one point. Considering how irrational they all become, who can blame the Doctor for getting a little unhinged?Fun fact: guest-star Colin Morgan began playing the title character in BBC One'sMerlinsame year "Midnight" debuted.

In this penultimate episode of season four, the Tenth Doctor andDonna (Catherine Tate) are joined by a litany of pastcompanions in their quest to save the planet and over a dozen others that have gone missing.

RELATED:The Sarah Jane Adventures: 10 Worst Episodes Of The Doctor Who Spin Off

"The Stolen Earth" is actually a crossover episode between Whoand its two majestic spin-offs,TorchwoodandThe Sarah Jane Adventures. As such, it boastsa tremendous cast that sees Rose (Billie Piper), Captain Jack (John Barrowman), Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen), and Martha (Freema Agyeman) assisting the Doctor once more. In this episode and its second part, "Journey's End," the Doctor battles the Daleks, who are perhaps his most iconic enemy in the Whoniverse.

In defense of the Family of Blood, who wouldn't want to live as long as a Time Lord? Unsurprisingly, the Doctor reigns victorious over the Family in this follow-up to "Human Nature," but not without some striking emotional revelations. "Family of Blood" features a heartbreaking speech from Martha when she says of the Doctor, "He's just everything to me, and he doesn't even look at me, but I don't care, because I love him to bits."

Considering all that Martha does to help the Doctor (especially when he doesn't even remember who he is), the moment is particularly devastating.

How often do you get to see the Doctor regenerate into the same incarnation? That's (sort of) what transpires at the start of this season four finale, which constitutes a sufficiently emotional follow-up to "The Stolen Earth." The injured Doctor partially regenerates to get back in tiptop shape, and explains in a hallmark moment of wit, "Used the regeneration energy to heal myself, but as soon as I was done, I didn't need to change. I didn't want to. Why would I? Look at me."

RELATED:Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Broke His Own Rules

This clever event is followed by the successful defeat of the Daleks, but also the tragic end of Donna's time as the Doctor's right-hand woman. In one of the most disturbing companion departures, her memory of the Doctor and all their escapades must be removed. Although season four was Tennant's last as the Doctor, he did not regenerate into Eleven in this episode; instead, a few standalone episodes were released over a year after season four, culminating in the "The End of Time."

Past, present, and future collide in this wacky episode that invokes both space traveland corsets. After discovering a 51st-century spaceship in which he can see an 18th-century French girl through a fireplace, the Doctor must figure out what's so special about her -- and, of course, how to save the day.

The episode is a brilliant combination of the historical period pieces and futuristic space plots thatWhoexecutes so well.

In the perpetually-traumatic finale to season two, the Doctor and Rose Tyler are separated indefinitely by the aftermath of a battle involving the Daleks and Cybermen. When one Cyberman says, "Together, we could upgrade the universe," you know it's going to be a tough battle!

RELATED: Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Why Rose Tyler Was The Best Companion

Although Earth is saved, Rose and the Doctor end up stuck in two different universes. Much more than a wall separates them, but both gravitate toward the physical area in which Rose was pulled into the parallel universe. Tennant delivers an incredible performance, touching the wall with an eerily vacant look in his eye, butBillie Piper's delivery is even more affecting as she sobs uncontrollably in her new world. While Rose and the Doctor's reactions may differ, their trauma is most certainly equal.

The enigma of River Song (Alex Kingston) and the Doctor begins ... and then ends, in a sense ... during the first installment of this two-part story arc, where viewers see the two meet. This is their first encounter from the Doctor's point of view, that is. As Whovians know, "first" is highly relative when dealing with the chaotic nature of relationships onWho, especially the inherently nonchronological saga of the Doctor and River Song.

The episode kicks off when Donna and the Doctor arrive at an unusually empty library, where they encounter the homicidal and shadowy Vashta Nerada. Alex Kingston's debut as River Song is a powerful one, as her sensitive reaction to the Doctor quickly convinces viewers that their relationship is terribly complex -- even if we have not seen any of it.

The follow-up to "Silence in the Library" includes one of the most momentous moments inWhocanon: River Song's death. It's a rare moment that becomes even more traumatizing when you progress through the show, because at this point, viewers had only seen River Song in one other episode. River's subsequent character development, including her relationship with not only Ten but Eleven, and Twelve, is one of the most complex and rivetingWho storylines.

For one, River is later revealed to be the daughter of Amy and Rory Pond, two of Eleventh Doctor's principal companions.OnlyDoctor Whocan kill off a character before you even know her, thendevelop her and make you swoon. Kind of similar to the Doctor's experience, huh?

The persisting critical and audience acclaim for this haunting episode is no surprise, given that it introduced one of the most sinister villains inWhohistory: the Weeping Angels. Written by Steven Moffat and guest-starring Carey Mulligan, the story follows Mulligan's Sally Sparrow as she grapples with the "timey-wimey" effects of the Angels. The Weeping Angels have appeared in severalWhoepisodes since, including a season seven episode that concluded Amy and Rory's time as companions to Eleven.

Tipping is part of experience at the poker table – GamingTodaySlotsToday

Posted: at 6:01 am

According to etiquette expert Patricia Rossi, author of the book, Everyday Etiquette, tipping is important because it shows people who are waiting on you and helping you that you are grateful.

Undoubtedly, while playing poker, we all have experienced both good and bad dealers. A good dealer will always be friendly and hospitable, answering your questions and generally improving the experience. The dealers have the choice whether to add to your poker game experience by being patient and pleasant or, on the other extreme, never smiling and being brusque or grumpy.

If they are adding to your experience, tip them; if not, dont tip them. On an ethereal level, some players may consider tipping the dealer to be a small offering to the gods of good luck.

On the other hand, some poker players will not ever tip a dealer. Others tip only when they are well ahead during the poker session. Some players rationalize: The casino does not tip me when I lose; the dealer is just doing his job. Let the casino pay him better if low salary is a reason for tipping the dealer. Tipping the dealer makes it harder for me to go home a winner.

Playing for several hours, those small tips can really add up. Think about it: With 30 hands dealt per hour, that amounts to 210 hands over a seven-hour session. With nine players at the table, if one chip ($1) is tipped by the winner for each hand played, that averages over $20 per player for the session even more in short-handed games. That is significant in low-limit games.

Some dealers never say thanks. Does such a dealer deserve to be tipped? Some do their utmost to speed the game along, sometimes making it difficult for players to keep up, and more likely to make the wrong decision in a game where there is so much to consider. Thats fine for the casino; the more hands dealt, the greater its profits via the rake.

Does that dealer deserve your tip? And, how about the dealer who seems to be on a power trip, and seizes your hole cards while your attention is momentarily diverted and then pushes them into the muck?

Perhaps most important: How skilled is that dealer? Does he or she make mistakes that irritate or confuse the players, often causing long delays?

So lets say you agree that youre going to tip your dealer. the question then becomes, how much?

Of course, there is no fixed rule. For me, if I am not losing, I will tip the dealer one chip when I win a small or modest pot; two (occasionally three) chips when its a huge pot. But no tips for a dealer who is not deserving.

On that score, every player must make his own decision. To each, his own.

‘What should I do?’: How the poker world is handling the coronavirus crisis – The Athletic

Posted: at 6:01 am

The country was already spiraling when the man arrived at the casino in San Jose, Calif. wearing a mask. He was one of 10 players left in the Bay 101 Shooting Star poker tournament on March 13. Two days earlier, the World Health Organization had declared the new coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. The NBA shut down. Baseball followed suit a day later. The gears of an economy were ceasing to whirr. And the man in the mask couldnt stop coughing.

The other players thought they understood the stakes. Entry into the tournament cost $5,200. First place paid $300,000. The money was enough of a lure, even as the virus spread through the Bay Area. The casino tried to take precautions; every two hours, staffers sanitized the tables. We were all super freaked out to begin with, said Lexy Gavin, one of the remaining 10 players, but the group had decided to gamble.

The calculus changed when the man in the mask showed up sick. He had displayed no symptoms the day before.

Crossover between esports and professional poker is clearer than ever – WIN.gg

Posted: at 6:01 am

Albert S. March 24, 2020

Synergies between the burgeoning worlds of esports and professional poker are now more obvious than ever before. Since the decision by the 2018 World Series of Poker to give esports a sizable presence at the poker industrys flagship event, more people have realized that the connection between the two sectors makes sense.

The Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas has been the spiritual home of the WSOP since 2005. In 2018, it decided to host a new centerpiece around its summer schedule of poker tournaments. The UMG Esports Stage was unveiled, giving poker players a chance to step up and compete, playing some of the most popular esports titles including Fortnite, Hearthstone, and FIFA.

The WSOP is something of an institution, so to unveil such innovation as a dedicated esports gaming arena and attempt to grab a slice of the esports pie underlines how pokers elite considers esports a worthwhile investment.

Elsewhere in Vegas, which remains one of the worlds biggest poker hubs for professionals and amateurs alike, esports is being embraced in a big way on the Strip. The Luxor at the south end of the Strip has opened its own 30,000 square foot esports arena, capable of staging some of the worlds biggest competitive esports tournaments. Poker Central is also due to make its broadcast studio available to stream live broadcasts of esports events.

The mental attributes required to be a poker and esports professional are very similar. In fact, some of the worlds most successful poker pros played video games for a living before migrating over to cards. French professional poker pro Bertrand ElkY Grospellier lived in South Korea for a time where he forged a career as a professional StarCraft player.

StarCraft captured the imagination of much of Asia at its peak, but more recent spin-offs of the gamehave been quietly scrappedin favor of more popular future releases like Overwatch 2.

Before reaching the summit of Frances all-time poker earnings list, ElkY had become one of the best StarCraft players on the planet. He was paid to play in front of sold out crowds of thousands in packed arenas, and was regularly mobbed by fans on the streets of Korea, signing autographs and taking photos. It was a true celebrity lifestyle.

Even during his professional poker career, ElkY has taken time out to get involved in other esports games, signing a dealto represent Team Liquidin Hearthstone tournaments. Hearthstone is a turn-based card game, similar to poker in some ways, as players never truly know what hands their opponents have. Hearthstone is an esports game thats enchanted another poker great, Daniel Negreanu. The Canadian evenwent head-to-headwith ElkY in a Hearthstone game staged at BlizzCon 2015 in California.

Many other esports pros have successfully made the transition from esports to poker. Their ability to quickly analyze and process on-screen data and then make quick decisions acts as a proof of concept for a fledgling poker career.

When it comes to unlocking secrets and developing successful strategies, there are few minds out there in todays poker scene quite like James OP-Poker Mackenzie. James and his fellow OP Poker crewwere recently confirmed onlineas part of Team PokerStars; with his background in Runescape and Hearthstone giving him the mental wherewithal to strategize over the newest forms of online poker, delivering high-end content for the masses.

Even the online poker industry has sought to design and launch cross-sector poker games that reach out to the esports demographic. Power Up Poker is one such variant that demonstrated the clear similarities between poker and esports strategy. The game began like a conventional poker game, but after the five-card community board was dealt, players were then given nine Power Up cards that gave them additional powers to improve their hand and weaken their opponents hands.

The exciting thing is that esports and poker are not seen as competitors. Both industries are seen as vital in inspiring more people to take the plunge and hone their skills in sports of the mind.

Desert Storm Poker Run Postponed To The Fall – SpeedontheWater

Posted: at 6:01 am

Although it wasn't an easy call forthe team at Phantom Productions to make, a decision was announced on Facebook earlier today to postpone the22nd annual Desert StormPoker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., until the fall, and combine the event with the production company's Monster Storm event also in Lake Havasu City.

Although new dates won't be announced until next week, the late-April Desert Storm Poker Run in Arizona has been postponed until the fall. Photo by Jeff Helmkamp/Helmkamp Photos

According to lead organizers Jimmy and Christina Nichols, Lake Havasu City pulled all of its event permits until further notice, which didn't help the organizers in the planning process being that the event is only a month away. So, rather than wait and try to select another date in the spring, they decided to push the event back and combine it with their fall poker run.

"It was not an easy decision to postpone the event, but the response from our amazing sponsors, staff and participants has been overwhelmingly positive," Christina Nichols said. "We'd like to thank everyone for their feedback and we plan to solicit more feedback as to which dates work best for everyone and will announce the new dates next week."

Men bound and beat mother and daughter with poker while robbing their house – Essex Live

Posted: at 6:01 am

Two men bound an 18-year-old woman with gaffer tape and used a fireplace poker to "knock her out" while they robbed her home.

Her mother then returned to the property before the men also caught her and tied her up.

On September 3 robbers Paul Jones, 53, and Jay Davies, 37, had gotten into the house in St Johns Street, Duxford.

Their teenage victim was in the house at the time and immediately texted her boyfriend to say she thought there was someone in the house.

The two men discovered her and, after a brief scuffle as she tried to escape, managed to hold her down and bind her with gaffer tape and computer cables.

She was still making noise so one of the men said to the other knock her out, and he hit her multiple times in the head with a fire poker.

When she regained consciousness, she found she had been tied to a chair in the kitchen and had a towel over her head.

However, she could still see the men; one was eating a banana and the other going through the freezer looking for ice cream.

At this point a car pulled up in the driveway; the victims boyfriend had called her mum who had returned home.

As she came into the house the two men pinned her down and tied her up next to her daughter in the kitchen using telephone cables.

One of the men began reciting a lengthy prayer asking for Gods forgiveness and to have mercy on me for I am a sinner.

A short while later the house went quiet and the victims managed to free themselves from their bindings.

The robbers had left the house, taking with them the victims car, handbag and cash.

Officers attended and a short while later managed to recover the car, which had been abandoned still containing a handbag and a tobacco pouch which belonged to the suspects.

Scenes of Crime Officers took chemical fingerprints and sent them for urgent analysis. The results showed a successful DNA match for Davies.

Police officers tracked him to an address in Kentish Town, London, where they arrested him on September 7.

While at the address Paul Jones was also found in one of the bedrooms, where he admitted to being wanted and on the run - he was arrested.

Jay Davies, of Ilford, east London, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and two counts of causing actual bodily harm.

Paul Jones, of no fixed abode, was found guilty of two counts of robbery and two counts of causing actual bodily harm at trial earlier this month.

Jones was handed a 21-year prison sentence and Davies received 12 years at Peterborough Crown Court last Thursday (March 19).

DC Ciaron Hickey said: This was a terrifying ordeal for the victims, I cant begin to imagine how frightened they must have been while they were tied up.

Your own home should be the one place you feel completely safe and Jones and Davies have ruined that for the victims. I hope this sentence will allow them some peace of mind and let them return to normality.

Poker Bot Expert Steve Blay Goes All-In On Omaha Poker Training… And Wins! – Poker News – CardPlayer.com

Posted: at 6:01 am

Steve Blay has been programming bots for poker training for more than 10 years. When he developed Advanced Poker Training, teaching bots to play no-limit holdem realistically was not an easy chore. However, with just two hole cards, it was a manageable problem.

Blay apparently had not faced enough challenges in his poker programming career, so in 2018 he decided to take on the geometrically more complicated game of pot-limit Omaha (PLO). Nearly two years, multiple consults with leading PLO experts, and dozens of revisions later, Blay brought Omaha Poker Training to fruition.

Card Player Magazine sat down with Blay and discussed everything from machine learning, to whether poker bots play online for real money, to how a no-limit holdem player can make the leap to PLO where the pots are huge and the action is wild!

Card Player: Advanced Poker Training (APT) must take up a lot of your time. How did the idea of developing a training simulation for PLO first develop?

Blay: Well, first I determined I wasnt busy enough doing private coaching, running AdvancedPokerTraining.com, raising a couple of kids, etc. But seriously, Ive gotten about a thousand emails asking for it over the last 10 years. Im probably not even exaggerating very much there. Its at least 500.

Card Player: What struck you as the greatest challenges youd face in creating bots that play like real PLO players?

Blay: The same challenges I faced in creating APT namely, getting a computer program to see the game like a human sees it, and make human-like mistakes. In other words, not just trying to use brute-force math, but adding some human psychology.

In a sense, its easier to write GTO-style bots. Anyone who has followed the chess world knows that the best chess programs have been able to beat every human on earth for over 20 years now. With so much computing power, thats trivial today. Playing against an opponent like that isnt of much value to the typical player. Youll just get destroyed, and you wont learn much.

Card Player: I actually play chess, and I hate playing against the computer it always wins.

Blay: Exactly. To create a chess program that plays like a human, one that makes truly human-like misjudgments that can serve as a good sparring partner for a human now thats a real challenge. Weve only seen real progress on that problem over the last few years with the advances in machine learning. Now, you can feed a computer millions of chess games played by amateurs and have it learn to play like an amateur.

But back to OmahaPokerTraining.com (OPT). What Ive tried to do is offer the best of both worlds. For the GTO crowd, the bots really do play at a high level. You can look at the exact range of starting hands they are holding all 270,725 of them if you really want. But for beginners and intermediate players, you can dial down the difficulty substantially. This is where the real magic happens, because you can train against lifelike bots that are going to play much like the typical players you meet in a cardroom.

Card Player: Thats my favorite thing about Advanced Poker Training.

Blay: Thanks. And no other site offers that. There are other places to play no-limit holdem against bots, but they lack the realism. And, of course, APT also has the Beat the Pro Challenges, the Combat Trainers, and everything else that has made it so successful.

Card Player: You were able to talk to some premier PLO players about their approaches to the game while programming OPT. Who did you speak with, and what kind of insights did they have to offer?

Blay: Ive worked with Scott Clements on and off for years and have come to the conclusion that hes one of the best minds in poker, and clearly one of the best in the world at PLO. So it was natural to enlist some help from him. But, hes not really a GTO guy. Hes more instinct and play-the-player. I really wanted to build some GTO into these bots too. For that part, I consulted with John Beauprez. Hes not a household name but he has a whole team that has analyzed PLO since solvers were first developed, so they were of great help with the GTO aspect.

Card Player: What would you advise a no-limit holdem player in terms of what they need to be a successful PLO player?

Blay: First, get used to big pots and lots of action. Dont fear it, learn to love it. Second, concepts like position, blockers, and redraws are critical in PLO. Get used to counting your outs quickly a great draw in PLO can have 20 or more. Finally (and seriously), join OmahaPokerTraining.com, unless you like to lose thousands of dollars at the cardroom learning to play the game well.

Card Player: In no-limit holdem there are teams of people tackling the game and devising GTO bots. That doesnt seem to exist for PLO which makes your site unique. Why do you think there arent any good computer-based PLO games?

Blay: Its just really hard. The game of PLO is exponentially more difficult than no-limit holdem. Consider this: suppose you are heads-up on the flop. How many different combinations are there of your cards, your opponents cards, and the flop cards? For PLO the answer is roughly 700 TRILLION. And thats heads-up! There isnt anything like OPT because it is incredibly difficult to create. I worked daily on this for nearly two full years, and that was with previous experience building the APT no-limit holdem bots.

A secondary problem is that the bots have to be able to come to a decision in a reasonable amount of time. Sure, anyone can make PLO bots if you give them an hour per decision to think through all the combinations. I set as one of the requirements that the bots have to act in two seconds or less. Anything longer, and it cuts down on how fast you can train.

Card Player: So pure number crunching power and speed are what make a good PLO bot?

Blay: Well, like I said before, what makes a good PLO bot for training purposes is realism. In 2020, we have an incredible amount of computing power available literally at our fingertips. Teaching bots to crunch numbers is one thing. But if the bots only think that way, their play will be unimaginative and mechanical. Therefore, from a practical sense, the best bot makes human-like misjudgments from time to time. Thats what I spent the most time on.

Card Player: What were you most surprised by when programming the OPT bots?

Blay: My favorite thing is when I think a bot is playing a hand terribly, only to find out on a later street that he had a devious plan all along. I didnt teach these bots to think in the same way I did on APT. On APT there are very specific plays programmed in the continuation-bet, the check-raise, the blocking bet. That doesnt mean the APT bots are inferior, just different. On OPT, in a sense the bots came up with much of their strategy on their own. They taught themselves. On the hardest level they can be so frustrating, but in an awesome way. It brings a huge smile to my face when I get owned by them, because its a thing of beauty that they are better than their programmer.

Card Player: When a player is using your simulator, what kind of advice or guidance do they get from your site to inform their decisions during a hand?

Blay: Just about anything you could possibly want to know. For beginners, it will help you compute the pot size, see your odds of improving, pot odds, stack-to-pot ratio, and more. We also have a series of instructional videos and articles that can teach a complete novice how to play the game.I know there are so many good no-limit holdem players who would love to play the big pot game of PLO when they walk into a cardroom and see a loose game, but dont know where to start. This is their chance.

For experts, you can actually look at your entire hand range, and the ranges of your opponents, to perform detailed analyses.

Card Player: What are the key improvements you think PLO players will be able to make using your training tool?

Blay: The beauty of OPT is that every hand you play is saved forever into your own online database. You can get detailed reports about your play filtered by a huge number of criteria, including dates, hand types, and position. After a while, youll start to see trends in your reports. You can focus on your trouble areas by configuring the software to deal you specific kinds of hands. You can freeze the button and only play out of the big blind, for example. You can deal yourself only playable or raising hands. You can dial up the aggressiveness of your opponents if those loose-aggressive types are giving you trouble. Its focused practice that really cuts down your training time.

Card Player: So the question Im sure everyone is wondering is, have you let these bots play online for real money?

Blay: No, besides it being unethical, I would have no idea how to do that. Theres a lot of hype about bots playing for real money online, but I personally dont know anybody successfully doing it. It takes very specialized software to read and process all the information on the screen and robotically click the correct buttons. And of course, your bots have to be good enough that they dont actually lose your money!

Finally, the online poker sites are always working on countermeasures, and if you get caught you get locked out and there goes all your investment. So, while I wouldnt say there arent any bots playing online, it isnt rampant, it requires constant oversight, and frankly there are easier ways to make money.

Card Player: What have you yourself learned as a result of this process?

Blay: Geez, what havent I learned? The beauty of this whole thing is that I was not an expert PLO player when I started this project. After playing hundreds of thousands of hands against these bots over the past couple of years, I can play comfortably in about any PLO game. I think everyone ought to be able to play PLO, because sometimes you go to a cardroom and all the loose, crazy players are at the PLO table, and you want to be able to jump right in. Frankly, the players are generally much worse in PLO and the pots are bigger.

Card Player: What is your favorite thing about Omaha Poker Training?

Blay: Hands down, the retry feature. Any hand you play, you can try it over again as many times as you want, to test out different strategies. I also really like this feature we call the grid, which lets you take an overall view of all the hands in your range. Especially in bluffing situations, it lets you determine what hands you can represent believably. If you have trouble bluffing successfully, this could be your best friend.

Card Player: So what about Advanced Poker Training, does this replace it? Is holdem dying?

Blay: Not at all. APT will always be our flagship product and continues to be the worlds no. 1 poker training site. Weve been adding content to that site for 10 years, and theres nothing else like it out there. We continue to have a team, including me, working on it every day.

As far as holdem dying, I recently went to the WSOP Circuit event in Tampa. The first event had a $500,000 guarantee. So many people showed up that they were running out of tournament chips. The prize pool ended up being $1.25 million. So if holdem is dying, nobody told Tampa.

Card Player: Whats next? Should we expect a Badugi simulator coming soon from APT?

Blay: Oh man, that would be fun. Now youve got me thinking.
