A class of supplements bills itself as neuroenhancers or nootropicscompounds you dont need a prescription for that promise to augment your mental functioning without side effects. A notable subset of the people interested in these brain pillsand sometimes hawking themare on the right. Its not hard to see how todays pressures might make a person want to amplify their cognitive abilities, but is there something about the idea of chemically optimizing ones mind that meshes especially well with a conservative politics? In Episode 2 of The Politics of Everything, the Australian writer Richard Cooke joins hosts Alex Pareene and Laura Marsh to talk about vitamin regulation, the history of amphetamine usage in the arts, how nootropics fit into the tradition of right-wing snake-oil peddling, and the unmistakable influence of the movie Limitless, which celebrates a mysterious substance that vastly improves its protagonists brainpowerand spurs him to commit a murder.

Later in the episode, campaign reporter Walter Shapiro calls in from South Carolina with a dispatch on the state of the primary race and his reflections on the possibility of a contested convention.

7 Nootropics That Combat Daytime Sleepiness and Boost Energy – The Crypto Coin Discovery

Posted: at 7:44 pm

It is necessary to get a good nights sleep. This keeps you fresh, energized, and motivated during the day. It also eases stress, repairs your body to keep you productive for the day. This is why it is important to have a regular sleep pattern and a good sleeping habit. By improving sleep quality, you can keep yourself going for the next day. It helps eliminate daytime sleepiness and fatigue. It also boosts energy and keeps energy level high throughout the day.

Sleepiness during work in the day can lead to laziness a sedentary lifestyle. This is where Nootropics help. The brain-boosting supplements and medicines are known as Nootropics. These help you to stay awake during the day or when necessary, so that you can sleep well at night. These medicines can be prescribed by your doctor. It is useful for healthy people. It is often used by people with daytime jobs. Sometimes students take it to enhance their cognitive function during examinations.

It was in 1972, when the Romanian chemist, Corneliu E. Giurgea coined the term Nootropic. A Nootropic substance is the one that has a cognitive-enhancing effect. It should have no or only a few side effects, and should be safe to use. Nootropics are not cognitive enhancers such as Ritalin or Adderall. The latter two have short-term or long-term side effects. They may also cause you to get dependent on the medications. Nootropics, on the other hand are safe to choose for improvement of cognitive activities such as energy, memory, focus, learning, motivation, creating, and more.

Below-mentioned are some of the effective Nootropics brain-boosting supplements that you can rely on:

It is a synthesized derivative of Thiamine or Vitamin B1. The medication is for those with Thiamine deficiency and people who suffer from fatigue and tiredness. Sulbutiamine has several Nootropic benefits in people who are healthy. It helps to increase energy level and alertness. The supplement also reduces anxiety and boosts mood. It works by increasing the production of dopamine and glutamate. These are the two chemicals in the brain responsible for overall drive and well-being. Sometimes, Sulbutiamine is also recommended for erectile dysfunction treatment.

If you are aware of Nootropics, then you must have definitely heard of Modafinil. It is one of the most popular Nootropic medications. The substances in Modafinil enhance wakefulness. It has stimulating effects, yet it is not categorized as a stimulant. The stimulation caused is not forced but encouraged. It does not showcase the euphoric side of other known stimulants. Thus, you may not develop a dependency on Modafinil as easily compared to stimulants.

Some of the benefits of this Nootropic are motivation, wakefulness, focus, increased energy level and productivity, etc. Like other stimulants, Modafinil does not only focus on one or two neurotransmitters. Its mechanism is rather focused on increasing excitatory neurotransmitters such as orexin, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, glutamate, and histamine. It also reduces GABA, the primary inhibitory brain chemical.

Oxiracetam was developed in the 1970s. It is a member of racetam class and one of the safest stimulating Nootropics. It has stimulatory effects like that seen by the use of phenylpiracetam. The mechanism of action is not clear and still being researched. However, the medication increases your endurance level. It thus helps you carry out tasks smoothly. The supplement is a mild stimulant. Thus, it brings wakefulness rather than forced stimulation.

It also increases the speed of recall. Thus, you can pay attention to tasks and remain focused for a good amount of time. Oxiracetam may even reduce symptoms of dementia by halting the pace of brain damage. It increases blood flow to the brain, allowing you to feel wide awake when necessary. It also speeds up energy metabolism.

Noopept is a member of the racetam class Nootropic. It is a synthetic peptide and a hundred times more effective than Piracetam. You need a lower dose of this medication to bring the same effect of a high dose Piracetam. This supplement clears head, lowers social anxiety, and promotes focus. It also helps improve verbal fluency. Noopept also increases blood flow to the brain. It has a mild stimulating effect, which is less apparent than caffeine. But it is more lasting and with no negative side effects.

Noopept works by increasing the production of BDNF and NGF. These are two substances containing neuro-protective properties. It also promotes short-term and long-term memory. The medication also causes focus for extended period by improving learning ability. It also enhances the ability to consolidate memories.

This Nootropic has a unique mechanism of action, and does not work like other racetams. It does not increase the acetylcholine levels. But it does eliminate excessive calcium and glutamate.

One of the potent Nootropics, Phenylpiracetam belongs to the racetam class. This medication is structurally similar to amphetamines. It is a synthesized version of Piracetam. But, it has an added phenyl ring. The effects of this agent are similar to that of popular stimulants. It causes an increase in the level of acetylcholine, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Thus, it functions like a typical racetam nootropic. Many say that they find Phenylpiracetam effects are the same as that of Modafinil. But there could be a few differences inexperience.

Russian cosmonauts were known to use this medicine to get over stress and keep their cognitive ability intact when working in space. Along with mental boost-up, this medication also has anxiolytic effects. Thus, you can experience relief when working under pressure or in stressful events.

Also known as Arctic Root or Golden Root, Rhodiola Rosea is an adaptogen herb. People have been using this root in Scandinavia and Russia for centuries. This herb is excellent to overcome brain fog, fatigue, poor memory, and sluggishness. It has stimulating effects and adaptogen properties, easing high stress, and reducing anxiety. Rhodiola Rosea improves mood and wakeful state by boosting norepinephrine and serotonin levels.

The herb also has several other health benefits. It has marked effectiveness in the treatment of infertility, impotence, flu, infections, depression, and tuberculosis. All this is because of its Nootropic and tonic effect. This substance protects the brain from oxidative stress as it contains salidroside. It also re-grows neurons and causes brain repair. This is done by re-synthesis and activating the synthesis of ATP.

Creatine is a well-known amino acid. It is essential for your body to make protein. Being a Nootropic, it also functions as a bodybuilding supplement. This is because it helps with muscle growth, and has benefits for brain health.

After consumption, creatine goes to the brain. Here, it binds with phosphate and creates a molecule responsible for fuelling the brain cells. The increased availability of particular brain cells helps build energy. It improves reasoning skills, short-term memory, and reduces stress.

Due to daytime sleepiness, your productivity and performance at work or academics can be affected drastically. It may also cause difficulty in sleep at night time. To overcome this problem, Nootropics are the best. These supplements and medication increase energy levels and do not have any negative impact on health. These also promote brain activity and enhance cognitive activity. The right type of Nootropic will be decided by your health practitioner.

As everyones brain chemistry is unique, the doctor will recommend the medicine based on case to case. Stacking of these medicines may decrease dependency on these. Thus, your doctor may recommend one or two Nootropics for a better effect and overall experience.

Equity Shot: Whats Elliott Management and why is it coming after Twitter and SoftBank? – TechCrunch

Posted: at 7:41 pm

Hello and welcome back toEquity, TechCrunchs venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines.

After a long Shot hiatus, things keep happening that demand our attention. So, after digging into Teslas near-miss of the $1,000 share-price mark, were back to dig into Elliott Managements imposition into Twitters world after sticking its nose into SoftBank earlier this year.

Alex and Danny had a few goals in this short, news-driven Equity episode: To talk about what the activist investor wants Twitter to do, and what it has wanted other tech companies to do in recent memory.

The tech world, sitting behind a contented wall of dual-class shares and founder-worship, may find activist investors grubby and irksome, but they dont care. And Twitter, a company that has famously loped along with a part-time CEO for longer than admit it you thought it would, is, in retrospect, an easy target.

Now that the social media company makes money on a repeatable basis, its more the sort of target that non-venture investors might want to peek at. They can make sense of it.

Danny and Alex then talk about Elliotts multi-billion-dollar investment in SoftBank, where the activist hedge fund wants the Japanese conglomerate to provide more transparency to investors to increase the value of its shares. The question is whether Elliott can win in Japan, where corporate governance remains comparatively docile, and whether it has learned any lessons operating in Asia after the firm suffered one of its few major defeats in South Korea a few years ago when it failed to block Samsung from merging two of its affiliates together.

Reddit and Twitter users are lashing out at Robinhood’s back-to-back service outages. Here’s what they’re.. – Business Insider Nordic

SOPA Images / Getty

Outraged Robinhood users are lambasting the discount brokerage amid its second straight daily outage.

Stocks dropped on Tuesday after the Federal Reserve issued its first emergency rate cut since the financial crisis. Yet Robinhood users were unable to cash out amid the intense price swings.

"Robinhood taking that whole 'disrupting' trade thing a little too literally," @Hipster_Trader tweeted Tuesday morning.

Robinhood said a "system-wide outage" took the platform offline for most of Monday trading. It stemmed from an infrastructure issue that prevented key systems from communicating with one another, a representative said. The error kept users from locking in gains during the biggest market rally since December 2018.

Tuesday's outage is related to the same infrastructure problem, a representative told Business Insider. While Monday's lockout arrived as equities gained, Tuesday's errors came during a sharp market reversal.

Robinhood announced in a tweet at 11:54 a.m. ET that services were "fully restored." By then, users online had torn into the brokerage and its troubled start to the month.

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I'm out," @QuintonThurmond wrote in a tweet at 9:57 a.m.

"The worst part is that the only functioning part of the app is being able to see how much money I'm losing/could be cashing out on..... it's like torture," a Redditor with the username mcpax wrote.

"Trying to liquidate so I can leave this mess behind and all I'm getting is a massive headache," bobbiscotti wrote in the Robinhood subreddit. "If yesterday's catastrophe wasn't enough, this will seal the deal for sure."

The company said on Tuesday that no personal information was lost in the outage and that funds held in accounts were safe during the affected periods.

"We realize we let our customers down, and we're committed to improving their experience," a Robinhood representative said in a statement. The representative added that the brokerage was reaching out to customers with information about case-by-case compensation reviews and that affected clients may receive billing credits or other compensation.

While some threatened to take their investing business to rival brokerages, others looked to organize collective action against the company. A recently created Twitter account named Robinhood Class Action had nearly 5,800 followers as of Tuesday and encouraged people to file complaints with federal authorities over the outages.

The account has repeatedly linked to a Change.org petition calling for Robinhood to be banned from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. The petition had 933 signatures as of 12:30 p.m. ET.

Twitter suspends travel as the business world grapples with spreading coronavirus – USA TODAY

We answer the often searched question: "What are the symptoms of coronavirus versus the flu?" USA TODAY

Twitter is one of the latest companies to curbbusiness plans and policies in the wake of coronavirus, which has killed more than 3,000 people globally so far.

The tech giant said Sunday that it is suspending "all nonbusiness travel and events" which includes its participation atthe South by Southwest conference in Texas. The annualmultiday festival largely centers around entertainment and tech.

"Our goal is to reduce the risk that anyone at Twitter might contract or inadvertently spread the virus," Twitter said in a blog post.

The social networking site is hardly the first to respond to the evolving threat of what has been dubbed "Covid-19" by the World Health Organization.

In fact, it'sbeen a month since WHOdeclared coronavirus a "public health emergency of international concern" and inthat time, the outbreak has disrupted travel worldwide and clobbered the stock market with no immediate end in sight.

The long-term economic impact could be severe, a new study by the economic research firm Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found. In recent weeks, the respiratory illness has also become a centralpoint of discussion during earnings calls as investors try to figure out what itmeans for their financials.

Heres what we know so far about how the latest companies and conferencesare responding to the coronavirus fallout:

On Friday, the Game Developers Conference was postponedafter Facebook, Sony and Amazon announced the companies were no longer attending.

The event was scheduled to take place from March 16 - 20, but organizers pushed it back to sometime "later in the summer."

"Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we're genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time," the company said on itswebsite.

Coronavirus: How Twitter could more effectively ease its impact – PBS NewsHour

Posted: at 7:41 pm

In the wake of a disaster or crisis, people turn to trusted sources for information.

In todays digitally connected world, those sources often take the form of social media platforms. These platforms allow for the rapid dissemination of information deemed vital in the midst of a disaster or crisis.

Our research contrasted the effectiveness of disaster-related information shared on Twitter by both public and private organizations, including NGOs and aid agencies.Weve seen this most recently amid the spread of the coronavirus, as information about the outbreak floods social media feeds. That information is coming from both government sources as well as non-governmental organizations and private individuals, such was the case with many active Chinese social media users and online media outlets.

Twitter has gained recognition as a tool that can assist in the disaster or crisis management process, allowing individuals to search specific hashtags through linking algorithms.

Aside from being a central information and alert system, Twitter also provides a platform for the narratives of those personally affected by disasters or outbreaks, which is useful when it comes to humanitarian assistance and support.

By providing users with pertinent and reliable disaster-related information, Twitter has the potential to reduce the impact of a disaster.

By providing users with pertinent and reliable disaster-related information, Twitter has the potential to reduce the impact of a disaster.

While our research found that Twitter can be successful in disseminating disaster-related information, we found that both public and private organizations used the platform in a conservative manner, not releasing information quickly despite the heavy social responsibility.

We noted that these public and private organizations had a distinct lack of interaction with their followers. That limits the efficacy of the content to encourage public participation. The usefulness of disseminating this information could be greatly improved by enhancing the quality of interaction online, ensuring a two-way dialogue.

Our research further established two key organizational characteristics that significantly influenced the effectiveness of using social media for disaster-related communication.

First, internal policies of creating and disseminating information and second, the processes relating to decision-making in the organization influenced the efficacy of disaster-related communication.

Both internal policies and decision-making processes reduced the speed of communication, ultimately decreasing the effectiveness of time-sensitive information.

Typically, public and governmental organizations exerted great care and carefully constructed their content in order to comply with official standards, policies and regulations (such as those pertaining to comment moderation, disclosure and endorsement issues) which often significantly add to the time taken to release the content.

On the contrary, private organizations by virtue of being independently owned and operated were able to exert far greater flexibility in adhering to regulations and certain standards of operations, and were able to co-ordinate more effectively with networks largely due to the fact that they have fewer protocols to follow than their public counterparts.

Public organizations were also hindered due to the decision-making authority regarding social media content. Typically, a social media administrator would need to obtain several levels of approval prior to posting content on a public organizations Twitter feed about an ongoing disaster or outbreak.

READ MORE: How social media is changing research and reactions to coronavirus outbreak

As a result, the volume of published information and data produced in the public sector is less than that of the private sector. While it is vitally important that this information be fact-checked to ensure its validity, once this accurate information finally reaches a mass audience, it may be too late to have any meaningful impact.

With private organizations, our research showed information was still validated before sharing, but the decision-making process was completed in a timely manner resulting in a greater amount of information being disseminated efficiently.

So what are the lessons of our research so far?

We have learned that organizations making use of Twitter to disseminate disaster-related information should ensure that theyre eliminating superfluous levels of approval for validated information.

They should place a great importance on the timely dissemination of the information.

Spike Lee-Knicks feud takes another twist as Twitter reacts to team’s statement, grainy photo – CBS Sports

Posted: at 7:41 pm

Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee is a longtime New York Knicks fan and the most famous face consistently seen courtside at games. But right now he is not exactly in good standing with the team and the team is not in good standing with him. Despite Lee using the employee entrance to get into games for years, on Monday, there was an issue with how he walked into their home game against the Houston Rocketsat Madison Square Garden.

Lee arrived at MSG like he always does, ready to watch his Knicks. As he says he has done for 28 years, he used the employee entrance and was stopped and told he could not enter that way. The Knicks superfan explained what happened when he showed up to watch the game:

"Security guy, this comes from the top, he says, 'Mr. Lee, you have to leave Madison Square Garden,' They wanted me to leave The Garden ... out the 33rd Street employee entrance I came from, walk outside and come back on 31st Street. ... So I said, 'I'm not leaving.'"

Lee pointed out that his ticket had already been scanned, so he didn't want be stuck outside the venue if he exited. He was eventually let into the game, but now that minor issue, one that seemed rather avoidable, has turned into quite the ordeal between Lee and MSG chairman James Dolan.

"(Dolan) said, 'We have to talk,'" I said, 'Talk about what?'" Lee said, explaining their halftime interaction. "I said, 'Mr. Dolan, I've been coming here for 28 years ... why I was not notified by email, text, phone?' He says, 'Now you know.'"

Spike, who says he spends about $300,000 on courtside tickets each year, said he is done coming to MSG this year to cheer on his team.

On Tuesday, the Knicks tweeted out a carousel of photos with a statement on the matter, saying Lee is not a victim here. The team also called the situation "laughable" and included a photo of Lee and Dolan at the game, to prove there is no bad blood (don't ever try to understand the Knicks' tactics.)

The statement has definitely not been well received by fans, who are confused about what the Knicks are trying to accomplish here.

Twitter is of course having a field day with this feud. Here are some of the best reactions:

Reggie Miller, former Indiana Pacer and forever Knicks hater and nemesis, took this opportunity to joke about the whole thing and tell Spike that it might be time for him to pick a new team.

Really though, was an iPhone 3 used to take this photo?

Kendrick Perkins, never one to hold back, said the whole thing was inexcusable and called out Dolan for "mishandling people that represent the culture of NY basketball."

Others chimed in that they have always seen VIP fans use this entrance.

Some people called it comical.

Here is a visual of how Dolan has handled many situations with the Knicks:

And another visual:

We found Dolan's burner account.

The message of "sell the team" was in a lot of tweets about Dolan today, though he should be used to that by now.

Lee has reportedly spent around $10 million on Knicks tickets over the last three decades. With that money, he could have built his own special entrance that reads "Spike Lee Only" above in orange.

The Knicks do not care.

The struggling Knicks would probably lose in this matchup, too.

I highly doubt this is the last that will come from this feud, but Lee seems adamant that you will not catch him in the seats to watch a game again this season.

The Best Twitter Reactions to Amy Klobuchar Exiting the Presidential Race a Day After Pete Buttigieg – Vogue

Posted: at 7:41 pm

In the midst of yet another fraught campaign cycle, its important to stop and appreciate the little things. Case in point: Amy Klobuchars exit from the 2020 presidential race on Monday. To be clear, Im not celebrating Klobuchars exit itself; Ive always had an inexplicable soft spot for the comb-toting, wisecracking Minnesota senator.

Whats truly amazing about Klobuchars departure from the 2020 race is its timing. Her departure comes not even 24 hours after Pete Buttigiegwith whom Klobuchar notably sparred at the most recent debateannounced his own campaign suspension on Sunday night.

Things had heated up between Klobuchar and Buttigieg at the preceding debate, with Buttigieg calling out Klobuchars inability to recall the name of the president of Mexico, and Klobuchar pulling him up on it: Are you trying to say that Im dumbare you mocking me here, Pete? she asked. They followed up with even more retorts; Buttigieg questioned Klobuchars immigration voting record, to which she responded, I wish everyone was as perfect as you, Pete, but let me tell you what its like to be in the arena.

The internet exploded after Klobuchar and Buttigiegs verbal quarrel, which was reminiscent of nothing more so than an exasperated mom fighting with her honor-roll-topping teenage son after he sneeringly corrected her pronunciation of Baja Blast in the middle of a crowded Taco Bell.

Now, Twitter is abuzz over Klobuchars recent exit, which some see as suspiciously timed to outlast Buttigieg by a single day. Klobuchar did fire off a message of support to Buttigieg after his exit, but you know what they say about actions speaking louder than words. Klobuchars post-Pete exit: mere coincidence, or a final coup de grce meted out by a virtuoso in the field of petty one-upmanship? You be the judge.
