GONZALES The city of Gonzales is asking the state for money to help buy land and built two new connector roads in the area of busy La. 30.

One project, estimated to cost approximately $400,000, would build a road between Veteran's Avenue and Commerce Avenue, on the north side of La. 30.

The other would create a new traffic corridor on the south side of La. 30, in the area of Our Lady of the Lake Ascension hospital, by extending St. Francis Street to Darla Avenue. The cost: $3.9 million.

The City Council on Monday approved a resolution seeking state funding for the projects, with the city to provide a 25 percent match.

Also on Monday, the city's director of public works, Alvin Broussard, reported that security cameras are now installed in Jambalaya Park, which saw a rash of vandalism in recent months.

"I don't know if they have noticed them, but the vandalism has stopped," Broussard said.

The city also inducted several East Ascension High students into the Mayor's Youth Advisory Councilfor the 2019-2020 school year.

The East Ascension High students will work with the city to build leadership skills and strengthen their community.

On the Youth Advisory Council this school year are Alexis Anderson, Lauren Bennett, Lakendra Bergeron, Ameyan Johnson, Skye Taylor and Kittyanna Walker.

Ascension Catholic made short work of Slaughter Community Charter Friday night, jumping out to a 35-0 lead in the first quarter and never looking back.

The Bulldogs were able to work in reserve players through the remainder of the game, as they cruised to a 42-8 non-district win.

Ascension Catholic (3-0) recorded five touchdowns in the opening quarter. Bryce Leonard threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Jai Williams on the second play from scrimmage. Williams added touchdown runs of 23 and 35 yards, and a 31-yard interception return for a score. Leonard also connected with Joel Landry on a beauty of a throw and catch for a 25-yard touchdown. Matthew Lafleur kicked all seven extra points.

Neither team would score again until the fourth quarter when Ascension Catholic's Owen Theriot plowed into the end zone on a 4-yard touchdown run. Slaughter was able to put points on the scoreboard when Trelon Perry scored on a 24-yard carry. Austin Eldridge ran in the two-point conversion.

Ascension Catholic Head Coach Benny Saia praised the way the starters were able to put the game away early.

"I felt like offensively they couldn't stop Jai," Saia said. "Defensively, I don't think they made it across midfield, but I'd have to see the film. I thought our first team controlled and dominated the game. I asked them to come out and give their best effort, regardless of who the opponent was. We wanted to come out and play Bulldog football. And I felt like they did that."

Leonard started at quarterback. The freshman signal caller finished 3-of-6 for 101 yards with two touchdowns. A 32-yard completion went to freshman running back Khai Prean.

As the second quarter started, reserve players took to the field for the Bulldogs. Backup running back Casey Mays had eight carries for 29 yards in the latter quarters. Theriot, Ethan Lewellen, Lex Melancon, and Layton Melancon all recorded carries later in the game.

"Those guys come to practice every day and get banged around," Saia said of the backup players. "For them to get in and get their 15 minutes of fame is great. They have a great attitude."

Defensively, Gage Breaux had four solo tackles, one assist and a forced fumble. Brayden Duhon tallied three solo stops and three assists. Dorian Barber recorded three solo tackles and three assists. J'Mond Tapp hurried the quarterback three times, and recorded two solo stops and three assists. Along with Williams, Eric Simon pulled down an interception.

Slaughter only completed one short pass during the game. The Knights relied on their rushing attack the whole night, compiling 160 yards on the ground.

Ascension Catholic will not play in the fourth week of the season, but Saia said it won't be a week off for the Bulldogs. Instead, he prefers to call it a week to work and prepare.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Oct. 4, when they host Central Catholic at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium in Donaldsonville.

Ascension Catholic rolls to road win over Slaughter - Beauregard Daily News

ST. LOUIS Home health care is the only industry Danny Stricker knows. So its fitting that Stricker, who has previously worked as a home health aide and who has held a number of nursing home administrator positions, was recently named president of Ascension Livings new Post-Acute Care Division. The new division marries the companys independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and short-term rehab services with its home health, hospice, palliative care, home infusion and HME services.

We know that older adults and people, in general, want to receive care within their homes, he said. So we are highly supportive of that and actively working on ways to enhance the home as a predominant site of care.

Stricker spoke with HME News recently about what can be done to help people stay in their homes.

HME News: Where does Ascension see opportunities to improve the patient experience through its new division?

Danny Stricker: Its one thing to say (you support aging in the home), and its another thing to actually put systems, structures and resources in place to actively work on improving the experience of those we serve. Many times we find that it could be as simple as (a lack of) DME coordination that prohibits somebody from going home right out of the hospital so theyll go into facility-based care. With DME and home infusion, in particular, we see those two areas as significant opportunities for us to grow.

HME: What else needs to be considered when caring for patients in the home?

Stricker: In addition to the care delivery side of staying at home, where we see a lot of opportunity is addressing the social determinants of health within the home. So, how do we ensure that when people are in the home that they have regular access to food, to transportation, to care coordination, to appointment coordination? What are other ancillary support services that they need within their home to be successful?

HME: Does Ascension see effecting policy as an important part of its role?

Stricker: Absolutely. There are a lot of unknowns in this journey as it relates to potential policies that may or may not help Medicare beneficiaries receive the care and services they need in the home. We continue to work with policymakers and other constituents to find ways to make that happen. Were still in the middle of putting this division together. We want to effect policy and to work with payer partners to include services through contracts to make sure that people are getting additional benefits to stay home successfully.

Ascension bundles post-acute care services - HME News

Ascension Episcopal understands what they've lost.

It's no secret that Jillian Barczyk, a six-time Division IV state champion who is now swimming at the University of Georgia,meant a lot to the Lady Blue Gators' swimming program.

And replacing her isn't going to be easy.

"You don't get a Jillian very often," Lady Blue Gators swimming coach Colleen Barczyk said. "Jillian is a very talented athlete, so replacing her is going to be very challenging."

But the Lady Blue Gators, who are looking to repeat as the Division IV state champions,have several swimmers who appear up to the task of filling in for what the program lost with the graduation of Jillian Barczyk and others.

"Every year, we have some new swimmers who step up during the high school season and wow me," said Colleen Barczyk, whose Lady Blue Gators will participate in the swimming meet held at the Robichaux Center on Tuesday.

"I feel there is just a little pressure," Lady Blue Gators junior Lily Dore said. "We have some new girls who are still getting comfortable, but I feel that as we go further into the season, everyone will become more confident."

Two swimmers Ashley Gill and Sophie Sierveld are going to be counted on to help lead the Lady Blue Gators this season. Gill, a highly recruited junior, was the Division IV state champion in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke in 2018.Sierveld, a junior, was the state runner-up in both the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle last year.

"Ashley and Sophie are both two great swimmers," Colleen Barczyk said. "Ashley loves to race. She's not an overthinker. I believe she is going to go very far in swimming, because she has the bug.

"Sophie, is a versatile swimmer," Colleen Barczyk continued. "She is a workhorse and someone we can put anywhere. Whatever we need Ashley or Sophie to swim, they are more than willing to do it."

Gill understands there are huge shoes to be filled in the Lady Blue Gators' program, but she is excited by the challenge.

"I don't feel any pressure at all to replace Jillian," said Gill, who is being recruited by LSU, Colorado State, TCU, New Mexico and James Madison University. "This is a good opportunity for me to work on being a leader and trying to inspire others."

But if the Lady Blue Gators are going to defend their title this year, Colleen Barczyk and Gill believeit is going to take more than just two swimmers. That's where Dore, senior Mia Dardar, freshman Ella Dupuie and seventh-grader Brooke Gill come into play.

"We didn't do what we did last year just with swimmers getting first place," Colleen Barczyk said. "We had swimmers come out of nowhere last year and get some fourth- and fifth-place finishes. In the end, it took everyone for us to win a state title. We aren't going to win a state title with just one or two swimmers. It is going to require the whole team."

"Without Jillian, it is definitely going to be harder (to repeat as state champs)," Gill said. "It is going to be important that we put forth our best effort and keep a positive attitude. We can't be like, 'We can't do it because we don't have Jillian.' We have to believe."

If the early results are any indication, Ascension Episcopal is going to be a team to beware of as the season progresses.

"We are hitting times already this year that we were hitting last year when we were rested," Colleen Barczyk said. "We have already made numerous state cuts, so I believe we are ahead of the game. I'm confident that we are going to make our mark this year.

"This team is going to do some amazing things and I believe that we will again have multiple state champions."

GONZALESA 24-year mayor of Gonzales and a member of the fading old guard of Ascension Parish politicians, state Rep. Johnny Berthelot announced during the summer he would not seek a third term in the House from the strongly conservative district, even though he wasn't expected to draw significant opposition.

Three people hope to replace Berthelot, who once was on the House Republicans' short list as a possible Speaker. They each vow to provide fiscally conservative leadership and keep an eye out for government waste and inefficiency that Berthelot has championed, as did parish Assessor M.J. "Mert" Smiley before him.

Plant inspection supervisor Ryan Beissinger, state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education member Kathy Edmonston and local grocer Brandon Trosclair qualified last month to run for the state House 88 seat.The election is Oct. 12. Early voting begins Saturday.

The candidates said they had no plans to seek the seat until Berthelot said he wouldn't run again. They all propose a tighter state budget while also directing more money toward Ascension's infrastructure woes.

"With the budget, we have definitely a spending problem, not a revenue problem. We have so much industry in the state, you know, the oil and gas industry, the energy industry and, of course, tourism down in New Orleans. We have so many advantages other states don't have, and we're squandering it," Beissinger said.

The House 88 district isentirely within Ascension and covers Galvez, St. Amant, Sorrento and half of Gonzales.

In fundraising, Trosclair, 36, led his opponents with more than $48,000 in cash on hand at the start of September for the stretch run. He had lent his campaign $30,100 and raised $55,570 overall.

Beissinger raised $14,200 and had $7,437 on hand. Edmonston had raised $6,825 but hadn't started spending it yet.

Edmonston, 69, who sits on the local Republican Party executive committee and the party's State Central Committee, won the state party's endorsement for the primary earlier this month.

But Trosclair, who operates the family-owned Ralph's Market and Butcher Boy Supermarket, and Beissinger, who works for ExxonMobil, have won backing from the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry and the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association.

Trosclair also has an endorsement from the Associated Builders and Contractors while Beissinger has backing from the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association.

Beissinger, a 36-year-old U.S. Army veteran and former Apache helicopter pilot, said he would like to see a limited constitutional convention focused on breaking protections on spending in the budget.

Trosclair said he would like to a see a constitutional convention called with the aim of creating a smaller and more efficient government.

"I think it would be best for the state of Louisiana to scrap what we got and start over, and I think it would be a lot more effective from the get-go," Trosclair said.

Beissinger, who is making his first run for office, said one risk in a more wide-open convention might be that other changes could occur that would introduce new forms of wasteful spending.

Edmonston said she would have to give the idea of a convention some thought, but, like her opponents, believes there is plenty to cut from state agencies and would resist pressure to raise taxes.

"It just always seems to be you can only cut in certain areas and then because you can't cut in those areas, you have to look at raising taxes," she said.

Other Republican candidates and some nonpartisan good government groups have floated the idea of a convention to simplify the more than 72,000-word document.

Edmonston, an Ascension public school parafacilitator, opposes the Common Core curriculum and supports the use of charter schools to aid failing school systems but not strong ones. She said she feels the Legislature will offer her more opportunities to collaborate than the 11-member state board.

"So just I think a little bit more freedom to get the things done that I've always wanted to get done and that's really to impact education in a significant way," she said. "I feel like we have a lot work to do."

Trosclairhas been involved in the local political scene. He ran unsuccessfully for Parish Council in 2003, when he was 19, and is one of the backers of the A Better Ascension group. Last year, its members made an unsuccessful bid to change the parish home rule charter and have an appointed professional parish manager in place of an elected parish president.

Trosclair is touting his outsider experience running a $50 million local grocery chain with 250 employees and says government at all levels needs to be more customer-service oriented. Early in his career, Trosclair ran into a bumpy waters when he and a partner ran a custom home-building business.

In June 2006, Ascension Parish prosecutors accused Trosclair of misapplying funds intended for a home construction project. Though a charging document doesn't give a precise amount that prosecutors say was misspent, Trosclair was accused of drawing thousands of dollars from one of his client's accounts and not using it to pay for the construction work.

Trosclair described the episode as an unfortunate situation and said he was falsely accused.

According to court transcripts and other filings, Trosclair's home-building company cut a $20,000 check to one of the clients to cover the largest of their unpaid subcontractor bills a month after Brandon Trosclair's arrest in April 2006. A judge found probable cause for the misapplication charge, even after the check was disclosed in open court, but prosecutors dropped the felony count in January 2011 after Trosclair completed a pre-trial diversion program.

Trosclair also faced a handful of lawsuits from homeowners, suppliers, subcontractors and a law firm over housing projects and related litigation in that time period, including the home project that led to the criminal charge, criminal and civil filings show. Some of the suits were dismissed while, for others, the record leaves the resolution unclear.

3 seek to replace Berthelot in race for open House seat in Ascension Parish - The Advocate

Say goodbye to the Pro League and hello to the Ascension Premier League.

Barely a month after the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) refused to permit a second round of the Ascension Invitational Tournament, the competitions founder, Richard Ferguson, got the TT Pro League to rebrand its own 20-year organisation in its image and hand over its television rights as well.

Ferguson, a chartered accountant by profession, is a director at local pest control company, Terminix, and the managing director of the Terminix La Horquetta Rangers Football Club.

In a Pro League board meeting yesterday, clubs voted 5-4 in favour of Fergusons proposal to rename the local top flight football competition and take control of the Ascension Premier Leagues television rights. The valuation of the Ascension offer is believed to be in the range of TT$1.8 million and it is for one year only.

For the past three months, Ferguson paid to have the Ascension Invitational broadcast on Flow Sports and Wired868with over 315,000 views on Wired868s Facebook page alone. His success in that venture apparently convinced his Pro League colleagues to allow him to attempt similar with their competition.

Ferguson, according to an anonymous source, will foot all production costs for the coverage of the Ascension Premier League, which will be aired by SportsMax and a local free to air channel. Fifty per cent of all advertising revenue earned by those television rights will be shared with the other nine Pro League clubs. Ferguson will also pay TT$500,000 to be divided equally among those clubs.

At least 15 of the 20 matches aired by SportsMax will be filmedat the Phase Two Recreation Ground in La Horquetta, which Terminix recently paid TT$5.3 million to renovate. This decision, according to a source, was supposedly made due to the quality of the infrastructure at the venue.

Rangers played all of their Ascension Invitation matches in La Horquettaboth home and away fixturesbut it is uncertain whether they will have the same benefit for the Ascension Premier Division.

Central FC, Club Sando, Defence Force, Police FC and Rangers voted to accept Fergusons proposal. Morvant Caledonia AIA, North East Stars, San Juan Jabloteh and W Connection voted against while Point Fortin Civic abstained.

Even if Civic had voted against the proposed changes, Centrals managing director Brent Sancho would have decided the matter in Fergusons favour, as he holds the casting vote as chairman.

Another likely alteration for the upcoming top flight season is the introduction of new member teams. Cunupia FC and Tobago FC Phoenix 1976 have applied to join the Pro League at an entrance fee of TT$150,000, which is a significant reduction from the previous entry mark of TT$400,000.

Wired868 understands that the TT$400,000 fee ensures offers full membership to the new entrant while the TT$150,000 figure only allows participation.As such, the newcomers will have little financial incentive in the Ascension Premier League. There is no prize money at stake and the Pro League board voted not to allow the new teams a share of television rights bonuses or a slice of the TT$500,000 that Ferguson promised to share between clubs as part of his proposal.

Wired868 understands that Cunupia are still determined to play in the top flight while Phoenix will mull over the new terms.

Fergusons rise as an influential figure in the local gameas he stepped in to the vacuum left by the abortedT-Leagueappears to coincide with a slide by TTFA president and W Connection owner David John-Williams.

Last week, the Pro League voted to reject a TTFA proposal to inject FIFA Forward money into the competition on the grounds that the local governing football body will manage all funds due to the clubsboth from FIFA and the Ministry of Sports subventions. The clubs voted 6-4 to dismiss the TTFAs offer, although Jabloteh chairman Jerry Hospedales, who was not present, attempted to change the vote of his representative and club coach Keith Jeffrey via email.

There was some division as to whether Jabloteh could change their vote in that manner but Sancho made it clear where his casting vote would go in any case.

Yesterday, Sancho allegedly refused to even discuss the offer from the John-Williams-led TTFA board unless it came in writing and excluded any attempt to control television rights, live stream matches targeted by SportsMax, run the administrative arm of the league and force clubs to hand over their subventions and FIFA Forward money.

John-Williams, Wired868 understands, is still free to put in a proposal for the aspects of the Ascension Premier League that have not already been farmed out to Ferguson.

Hosting the Warriors on Friday night, the Lions led 22-12 at halftime, but they recovered an onside kick to begin the third quarter and scored on their first offensive play of the second half. From there, they cruised to an emphatic 51-12 victory.

"We got the onside kick coming out. That helped give us momentum, and on the very next play, we had a big play by Brady Gueho at running back," Ascension Christian head coach Josh Puryear said. "That was good to have that coming out of halftime. I thought we missed some key opportunities in the first half. We could have stretched the lead, but we didn't. It was good to see us come out in that second half and play hard."

On the Lions' second drive of the game, quarterback Zach Diez hooked up with Derrick Varnado for 40 yards. On the very next play, Gueho scored from 10 yards out to give Ascension Christian a 6-0 lead.

On their next possession, Diez hit Nathan Bledsoe on a slant for a 31-yard score. Gueho converted the two-point try to put them ahead 14-0.

Although, Houma Christian began to slowly chip away at the lead. They scored twice to cut it to 14-12 early in the second quarter.

They then had Ascension Christian facing a third-and-25 in their own territory. However, the Lions were able to pick up the first down with a 32-yard completion from Diez to Bledsoe.

Not long afterward, Diez hit Emory Templet for a 15-yard score. Gueho was good on another two-point try to give the Lions a 22-12 lead at the half.

The Lions then recovered an onside kick to start the third quarter, and on their first play, Gueho broke a 51-yard touchdown run right up the middle to give them their biggest lead of the night at 30-12.

From there, it was all Lions.

To end the third quarter, Diez hooked up with Bledsoe for a 47-yard score, and to begin the fourth, he hit Templet down the sideline for an 86-yard touchdown.

To end the scoring, Dillon Summers pounded in a one-yard touchdown run to make it 51-12.

Through the air, Diez completed 17 of 25 passes for 308 yards with four scores and one interception.

Bledsoe had six catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Templet only caught two passes, but both went for scores, totaling 101 yards.

Gueho only carried the ball six times, but he chewed up 87 yards and two touchdowns on those carries.

Altogether, the Ascension Christian offense piled up 510 total yards.

Defensively, the Lion defense pitched a shutout in the second half, and they limited Houma Christian to just 212 yards.

"I love how we held them to no touchdowns in the second half," Puryear said. "Nick Davis ended up with five sacks coming off of the end. He's an undersized guy. He's only about 155 pounds, but he plays hard and has a good motor. The coaches did a good job of putting him in the position to make plays tonight. I was excited about that."

It was the second straight victory for the Lions as it improved them to 2-1.

"I like where we're at," Puryear said. "We're still learning how to play. We're still learning how to compete. Next week, we have Westminster. It's gonna be a tough game for us, but I like the direction we're going. We had a tough loss in week one. We missed a lot of opportunities, but I feel good about our guys moving forward, if we can stay healthy."
