Artificial Intelligence: The Single Biggest Threat to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) – Wealth Daily
Posted: April 15, 2017 at 5:36 pm
For over a decade now, the biggest selling points of premium smartphones have been all about physical design.
But in the coming years, the consumer electronics market is poised to experience a radical shift one that every investor should start paying attention to today.
When Steve Jobs officially unveiled the first iPhone to the world in 2007, there was enormous hype surrounding its groundbreaking touch interface and for good reason. By blending input and display into a single place, Apple managed to redefine the mobile device entirely.
In the years that followed, Apple introduced a great number of incremental improvements, and it was always the physical redesigns that stood out and that have spurred sales the most.
The iPhone 4 (2010) was the first major redesign for Apple. It had a sleek, modern look, and it was the first iPhone to feature a high-pixel count Retina display. It also introduced the world to the front-facing camera, which has become a staple of todays premium smartphones.
The following year, Apple managed to nearly double its iPhone to 93 million units.
The changes to the iPhone 5 (2012) were less radical, but there were meaningful physical improvements nonetheless. The phone featured an extra-tall screen, which allowed for a bottom row of applications. It also introduced Apples Lightning connector, which could be easily inserted face up or face down.
Not long after, the iPhone 5S (2013) was introduced with Touch ID, enabled by a bold new fingerprint sensor.
And thenthere was the iPhone 6 (2014), Apples latest major redesign. This model introduced NFC for Apple Pay and extended its screen size by reducing the bezel footprint.
But in 2015 something weird happened...
That year, Apple released the iPhone 6S, and it was visually identical to its predecessor. If you held the two in your hand, youd have a difficult time telling the difference.
Then in 2016, it was more of the same: The iPhone7 was nearly identical from a design standpoint. The only notable addition was actually the removal of its headphone jack.
For acute investors, this three-year lull in physical redesign exposed a notable chink in Apples armor: the company, which was once adding new and meaningful physical features to its phones as often as once a year, had begun to run out of ideas.
That is, Apple was running into a very unusual problem most companies never face: design perfection.
When it comes to physical design, theres really not much to argue about: Apple has a reputation for being the best in the business.
But as the years have gone by, Apples design improvements have drastically reduced in significance.
And as a byproduct, its competitors have caught up. In certain cases, they have even surpassed Apple in terms of quality of design.
Samsungs flagship Galaxy S line, for one, has had wireless charging for years. Apple may or may not feature wireless charging in the iPhone 8.
Googles new flagship Pixel phone is another example. Its camera is arguably the best available on the market.
Of course, Apple is by no means lagging far behind its competitors, but the reality is that other manufacturers have reached design parity. Unless Apple has some radical new design up its sleeve, the company will continue to offer little more than a brand name above its competition.
What this likely means for Apple is further reduction in market share because consumers now have equivalent options. This is just a simple law of economics, and its why Googles Android OS snagged a record market share with nearly nine in every 10 smartphones late last year.
Its also why on Wednesday, TrendForce revealed that Samsung has already regained its top market share position following last years exploding Galaxy Note fiasco. The firm owned 26.1% of the smartphone market worldwide in the first quarter, versus Apples 16.9%.
Thats a stark contrast to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016, where Apple stood at 20.3% market share and Samsung at 18.5%.
This is as much proof as you need that Apple has lost any true technological edge.
And it could be getting a whole lot worse for the major handset maker in the years to come.

The only thing more troubling for Apple than product parity is product obsolescence.
In terms of design, Apple is at minimal threat from competing handset OEMs. With the smartphone near design perfection, theres little left to differentiate any single premium from the other.
But where Apple faces serious competition within the smartphone market is at the level of software and ecosystems.
Specifically, Apple is coming in at a heavy disadvantage when it comes to artificially intelligent digital assistants.
While its true that Apple was the first to introduce a digital assistant with Siri, its ability to leverage AI to its advantage has been negligible compared to the competition. Both Google and Amazon have begun making significant strides with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant over the last year.
Google Assistant is a particular threat to Apple for two reasons...
First, Android penetrates close to 90% of the global smartphone market. This means Google can show Apple up with a single software update the moment it develops a fully conversational AI. And make no mistake, this is Googles objective.
Second, and this is also tied to Android market share, Google has access to significantly more consumer data than Apple and its able to parse it all out. This is whats referred to in the industry as a knowledge base, or as Google calls it, a Knowledge Graph.
According to various sources, Googles Knowledge Graph contains 18 billion statements about 570 million entities, with a schema of 1,500 entity types and 35,000 relation types.
All told, the knowledge base is armed with 70 billion facts. This means you can ask Google Assistant a question, and instead of directing you to a website, it can answer you directly in 70 billion different scenarios.
For years, Google has been learning about us. It knows what questions we ask and the answers were looking for. Its been collecting a vast web of knowledge. This unprecedented knowledge base is the heart of the companys long-term strategy for absolute technological dominance.
Apple, on the other hand, can only dominate on the hardware front, and will face an enormous challenge breaking out of its vertical ecosystem. Apples isolation, which once served the company quite well, has suddenly become a major detriment.
Ben Rickard, head of mobile at MEC global solutions and EMEA, puts it this way:
What is becoming increasingly clear is that visual and branding identity will become less relevant in a world that is operated by voice and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
In other words, were going to soon stop looking at our phones and start talking to them instead as digital assistants become more conversational. Eventually, the form factor of mobile devices as we know them today will start to fade away.
Gartner, for one, projects that by 2018, 30% of our everyday contact with technology will be conversational.
And ComScore estimates that 50% of all web searches will be through conversation by 2020.
Thats great news for software- and AI-focused companies like Google. Its terrible news for hardware-focused companies like Apple, Inc.
But more than any other business niche, its a winning formula for the makers of embedded microphones. No matter what the form factor of our future AI assistant, theyre always going to need a way to listen.
Until next time,

The Left’s artificial intelligence – Richmond County Daily Journal
Posted: at 5:36 pm
The days of artificial intelligence are upon us all and its unbelievable, to say the least. Just take the time to remember back, not that long ago, when there was so much science fiction. Now today that same science fiction is science fact. Thats the same way that artificial intelligence has come to us, but it is not based on fact. Now some people will tell you that you have to be afraid of artificial intelligence. Thats not the truth. You do not have to fear it at all. It has been proven that artificial intelligence is not as intelligent as it wants to make you believe it is. It is not as smart as it thinks it is. Artificial intelligence has told itself that it knows whats best for the American people, even if the people dont believe it. But you see, artificial intelligence does not care what the people think is the right thing for them and their lives. This artificial intelligence wants to shove down your and my throat what it believes in, because the people cant think for themselves.
There are those who will tell you that artificial intelligence is the best thing that could ever happen to America. Those who believe this are the same ones who think the past eight years were the best that this country has ever seen. This past eight years that I write about was the gift from those who were in power. These people of the past eight years are the artificial intelligence that I write about. They were not really as smart as what they told you that they were, now were they? They told you and themselves that they were the brightest bulb in the box. It did not turn out that way, now did it?
It seems to me that if they were the best thing since sliced bread, then they would not have lost nationwide more than 1,000 seats of office. The best Ive ever seen with A.I. was Harry Reid. It seems Dirty Harry was somewhat of a storyteller. Some would just say he could tell a lie if it would put him and his party in the lead, and he did. No time for detail, but one of his best lies came during the election when Mitt Romney was running against Obama. Just look it up and see for yourself. But it did not stop there with Harry Reid and his A.I. just look to the past. During the 113th Congress, Reid triggered the nuclear option. That was in 2013. Democrats in the Senate changed the rules on the filibuster, lowering the number of senators needed to confirm presidential nominees from 60 to a simple majority of 51. You see what A.I. got the Democrats? What were they thinking? Did they really think that they would never be in the minority? Now, the worm has turned. The shoe is on the other foot and it will be used against the Democrats. That still does not mean that it is going to be easy on the Republicans to get things done under Trumps administration.
In the long term, the changing of the rule represents a mighty power shift in a chamber that, for over two centuries, has given more rights to the minority party than any other legislative body from around the world. Now Trumps party holds the majority in the Senate and is assured of having his nominees approved with less opportunity for Democrats to obstruct his nominees. Karma has a way of getting on your back like a monkey when you least expect it, and its hard to shake off at times. The Democrats are reaping what they have sown in the past. The Republicans need not think this will not be a vicious circle in short order.
Another problem for the Democrats is they will be unable, on their own, to stop any of the 127 lower-court judicial appointments that Trump will make this year, because they are either vacant or will become vacant soon. The only help Democratic senators will have depends or their Republican counterparts respect for Senate tradition about the appointment of judges in their home states. Some feel with the nature of Washington these days, that tradition might well change.
Republicans in office are feeling the same way as the citizens are feeling about the Democrats. For the most part, the people see the Democrats as not willing to work with anybody who has different viewpoints other than their own. At times, all in Washington have to wonder what Reid was planning when he invoked the nuclear option in the first place. One thing that he wanted it to do was to confirm a head of the Consumer Financial Protection Board, which had been created during 2013, or there about. Republicans had opposed Obamas nominations to that post on the principal that the agency had been set up to be unaccountable to elected officials and unconstitutional. In time it was proven that this was the fact of the matter.
It has also been proven that under this last administration that unbelievable amounts of your tax dollars are unaccountable. It was used without authorization. But no one seems to know how the money was appropriated or why its just gone. Thats a joke and we all know it. It went into the pockets of Washingtons elite and their slush funds that went to pay their family members for jobs that they never went to. Again, for most of the hard-working people of America, its not hard to believe where the money went. It did not just sprout legs and run off. Now the A.I. would expect you to believe that it did.
Reid wanted to fill as many vacancies on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals as he could. Three years after the nuclear option, it helped Obama establish a liberal majority on the D.C. Circuit Court. This would help Obama give to the world the Internet and more. That brings us to today and the new fight that is taking place in Washington. It appears that we have an oh my moment in the Democratic party. In 2006, Neil Gorsuch only weeks after his nomination was confirmed by the Senate to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. We now know that he has made it to the Supreme Court. He has always been the type of judge that is approachable and popular with all parties. The American Bar Association has stated that he was unanimously well qualified for that posting. I myself have taken the time to watch interviews and read about this man. I do believe that he will be the type of Supreme Court Judge who will look beyond all the parties and will see the law as it was written. I see this man as of the people not someone who thinks he is above us and the laws of the land. Also, as I write these words, I know why the Left wished to block Judge Gorsuch.
It goes back to the last months of Obamas administration and the nomination of his pick, Judge Merrick Garland, to fill the vacancy of Judge Antonin Scalia. If Garland had filled Scalias post on the court, that would have made it possible that Obamas choice could tilt the balance of the court away from conservatives for years. The GOP knew that if Garland were allowed to take the seat, conservative grassroots voters would revolt and for the most part, they did. That is the very reason we now have Trump in office, like it or not. It was the people, not the GOP, that did not want Garland.
So now we see the nuclear option coming back to haunt the Democrats and their artificial intelligence. I dont want A.I. in office I want real intelligence.

Alternative medicines – Gloversville Leader-Herald
Posted: at 5:34 pm
Many of us have found generic medicines to be good alternatives to more expensive brand-name drugs. But sometimes, they are not available. If we need a certain pharmaceutical, we have no choice but to pay the higher price for the brand-name version.
There may be good, acceptable reasons for that in many situations. But sometimes, there are not.
U.S. Reps. David McKinley, R-W.Va., and Peter Welch, D-Vt., want to do something about that. They have introduced a bill aimed at making more generic drugs available.
Their proposal, the Fair Access for Safe and Timely Generics Act, would, in McKinleys words, thwart manipulation of the Food and Drug Administrations drug safety regulations in order to block the production of generic alternatives to brand name medicines.
That could save Americans as much as $2.35 billion a year, according to an estimate by the Congressional Budget Office.
Last years scandal over the EpiPen device, a lifesaver for many people with severe allergies, illustrates how much money can be involved.
In 2009, a two-pack of EpiPens cost about $100. But by last year, the manufacturer, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, had increased the tag to more than $600.
Other companies had applied for FDA permission to sell alternatives at much lower prices but approval had been delayed.
No one wants the FDA to take chances with drug safety. But there is ample evidence that sometimes, that has nothing to do with delays in approval of some drugs and medical devices.
Sometimes, companies seeking to block approval of generic competitors throw roadblocks in the way of FDA approval. The McKinley-Welch bill is aimed at removing such obstacles.
As McKinley put it, The high cost of brand name drugs should never force patients to make painful financial decisions. Medicine must be affordable to those who need it most.

Dietary supplements send thousands to the ER each year – WPEC
Posted: at 5:34 pm
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12)
Bad reactions to dietary supplements are sending tens of thousands of Americans to the ER every year, a new study shows.
More than 23,000 visits to emergency rooms occur annually due to complications from taking dietary supplements such as herbal or complementary nutritional products, vitamins, and minerals, according to scientists from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration who coauthored the study.
About 2,154 of the visits resulted in hospitalizations, the scientists reported.
Consumer Reports also studied the use of supplements. They found supplements can cause organ damage, cardiac arrest and cancer.
These latest results now have many doctors warning their patients about taking supplements.
Two years ago, when Chris Herrera was fifteen, he lost 56 pounds while taking a green tea extract billed as a fat burner.
According to his mom, Lourdes Gonzalez, his eyes turned yellow and medical tests showed his liver was failing.
"Having to hear the doctor tell me every day that Christopher had a 50% chance of dying and not making it, it was hurtful," said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said doctors blamed the green tea extract. Herrera eventually recovered.
That wasn't the case for Logan Stiner.
Logans mother, Katie Stiner, says her healthy 18-year-old son suddenly died while taking a powdered caffeine supplement.
"He had no idea what he was doing. None," said Stiner.
"One of my biggest concerns is that people think that a supplement is meant to replace food, and it is not," said Karen Hartung, Lead Clinical Dietitian at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.
Hartung added some people misuse supplements, "People have shown they are dying from these supplements."
When people don't, Hartung says, they end up in the emergency room. "They may be overdosing or they are going into cardiac arrest because they took a pre-workout or they are taking a fat burner, and you just don't know the long term effects of that."
In fact, the recent study by the CDC found weight loss and energy products accounted for about 72 percent of visits for patients between ages 20 and 34.
The most typical patients were young adults or unsupervised children ingested the supplements.
The most common symptoms were chest pain, palpitations, and elevated heart rate.
Unlike prescription drugs, manufacturers don't need to prove safety and effectiveness for supplements.
In the United States, supplements can't be marketed for the treatment or prevention of diseases they don't get scrutinized and approved by the FDA like prescription drugs but, many people take them to address a range of symptoms or to boost general health.
About half of adults used at least one dietary supplement in the past month, and people spend billions on herbal or complementary nutritional products every year, according to the researchers.
The Council for Responsible Nutrition, which represents the supplement industry, maintains that "overwhelmingly dietary supplements are safe and play a valuable role in helping Americans live healthy lifestyles."
If you take supplements, Hartung recommends the following:
With the help of an expert panel of independent doctors and dietary-supplement researchers, Consumer Reports identified 15 supplement ingredients that are potentially harmful.
The risks include organ damage, cancer, and cardiac arrest.
The severity of these threats often depends on such factors as pre-existing medical conditions, as well as, the quantity of the ingredient taken and the length of time a person has been exposed to the substance.
Many of the ingredients on this list also have the potential to interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications, such as cholesterol-lowering statins and blood-thinning drugs like aspirin and Warfarin (Coumadin and generic).
According to Consumer Reports, experts agree that none of these supplement ingredients provide sufficient health benefits to justify the risk. Even so, Consumer Reports found all 15 ingredients in products available online or in major stores such as GNC, Costco, CVS, Walmart, and Whole Foods.
The following are the 15 ingredients identified by Consumer Reports:
Aconite
Caffeine Powder
Chaparral
Coltsfoot
Comfrey
Germander
Greater Celandine
Green Tea Extract Powder
Kava
Lobelia
Methylsynephrine
Pennyroyal Oil
Red Yeast Rice
Usnic Acid
Yohimbe

6 Essential (and Often-Overlooked) Supplements for ADHD – ADDitude
Posted: at 5:34 pm
1 of 16 Beyond Food
Most ADHD experts recommend eating a diet full of fruits and vegetables, complex carbs, and some lean protein with every meal to help manage symptoms.
"Nutrition can really make a huge difference in the success of children and adults with ADHD, says Dr. Sandy Newmark, founder of the Center for Pediatric Integrative Medicine in San Francisco, and the author of ADHD Without Drugs: A Guide to Natural Care of Children with ADHD. I've seen time and time again in my practice, parents find that simple nutritional changes, like changing breakfast or sending a school lunch, can really, really make a difference."
Its true that not everyone eats the right foods to achieve beneficial levels of certain nutrients. But its also true that our bodies dont always produce the nutrients we need, so we have to get some of them from supplements. Find out which diet changes, vitamins, herbs, and supplements may diminish ADHD symptoms.
Carbohydrates are not innately evil. In fact, they are essential. When digested, carbs turn into sugar, or glucose, which is crucial to many bodily processes. Your brain works exclusively on glucose, Newmark adds. So, [glucose] is very, very important.
However, when carbohydrates are converted to sugar too fast which is the case with simple carbohydrates like white bread, pancakes, or waffles blood sugar goes up very quickly and then bottoms out quickly after insulin is released. Studies confirm that this results in a hyperglycemic, stressed-out individual who is then unable to concentrate and work well.
Eating complex carbohydrates balanced with protein is a great way to avoid a glycemic rollercoaster.
Artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives are troublesome for individuals with ADHD. Across the board, [artificial additives] cause people to be more hyper and less attentive, Newmark says. Studies show that most children were more hyper and less attentive when given certain artificial colors and flavors and certain preservatives. I think this is even more striking for some individuals with ADHD.
Where do many of these artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives hide? Your childs breakfast cereal, cereal bar, or toaster pastry. When a child eats a breakfast of processed foods, it causes his blood sugar to go up and then drop. Then, halfway through the morning, we have a child with low glucose, low blood sugar, Newmark says. Stress hormones are being released, and things are not good.
Newmark recommends a breakfast containing some protein, some fat which slows digestion of carbohydrates and unprocessed, low glycemic carbohydrates, also called complex carbohydrates.
Besides being good for heart health, omega-3 fatty acids improve symptoms of ADHD, including behavior, academic skills, and focus. A comprehensive look at many studies showed that ADHD-optimized doses of omega-3s are about 40 percent as effective as stimulants in relieving symptoms. Research also suggests that striking the right balance betweenomega-3 and omega-6 fatty acidsis important, and should be undertaken with a physicians help.
According to Newmark, kids between four and eight years old should take between 1,000-1,500 milligrams a day. Older kids should get 2,000-2,500 milligrams daily. ADHD expert Dr. Edward Hallowell typically recommends 2,500 milligrams of an omega-3 supplement for children each day and up to 5,000 milligrams a day for adults.
One study backing the efficacy of omega-3s for kids with ADHD was published in Pediatrics by lead author Paul Montgomery, D.Phil., a researcher in the psychiatry department at the University of Oxford in England. Montgomery recommends choosing afish oil supplement that contains a high ratio of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA) to omega-6 fatty acids (DHA). "The right ratio of 3s to 6s seems to be about four to one," he says. Look for a product that has twice the amount of EPA to DHA the two main types of omega-3s.
Liquid or capsule forms of omega-3s are best. Other versions have lower amounts of EPA and DHA. (See our recommended omega-3 supplements for kids who hate pills.)
Some studies have shown that children with ADHD may naturally have lower levels of zinc. Taking zinc supplements may reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity, but not inattentiveness. High levels of zinc, however, may be dangerous.
Have your doctor check your or your childs zinc levels before starting a supplement. If you do add a zinc supplement, Newmark suggests that children with ADHD take 20 milligrams daily.
Some experts believe that iron deficiencies may contribute to ADHD symptoms in children. A 2008 study showed that children who were not anemic but had low ferritin levels a protein needed to store iron in the blood showed improvement of symptoms after taking iron supplements for 12 weeks.
Before starting an iron supplement, Newmark recommends that you speak with your or your childs doctor about checking iron levels first: High iron levels can be dangerous.
Healthy levels of magnesium in the blood can help relax individuals with ADHD. Some small studies have shown that adding magnesium supplements decreases some symptoms of ADHD. Magnesium certainly helps with sleep and relaxation big challenges for children and adults with ADHD and should be discussed with your doctor.
Vitamin C is important in modulating the neurotransmitter dopamine at the synapses in the brain, Hallowell says. (ADHD stimulants are effective because they increase dopamine levels in the brain.) Hallowell recommends getting vitamin C from food, but if your child doesn't eat a healthy diet, try a daily supplement.
One caution: Don't take vitamin C within an hour before or after taking ADHD meds. Its ascorbic acid prevents the medication from being absorbed fully in the blood stream.
If your child doesnt eat high-protein foods, which are key to increasing attentiveness and focus, or is a picky eater, give him a protein-powder drink. Mix it with his favorite juice or milk to help the protein go down easier, and look for brands that are low in sugar and free of artificial flavors and preservatives. Organic whey protein is one popular source of dairy-free, soy-free protein that is found unsweetened and free of artificial ingredients.
A daily multivitamin, containing the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals, is important for optimal brain health. However, many of the multivitamin/multimineral products on the market contain sugar, preservatives, and artificial colors, which may increase hyperactivity in children. Look for brands that are low in sugar with no artificial colors or flavors. Newmark recommends Carlson, Nordic Naturals, Natures Plus, and Child Life.
Some limited evidence supports the idea of using herbs to treat ADHD. The herb valerian, for example, can calm hyperactivity and may reduce anxiety, but it doesnt improve concentration.
Valerian also helps with sleep problems and lessens the rebound effect that some kids experience when stimulants wear off. Talk with your doctor or a nutritionist who specializes in herbs about valerian. Newmark recommends Valerian Super Calm, by Herbs for Kids.
Melatonin is a natural hormone produced in our bodies to help us get to sleep. When we turn off the television, dim the lights, and settle down for bed, our body produces melatonin and we become sleepy. But for those with ADHD, racing brains can often stave off sleep. Melatonin supplements can help and are safe to take. Always start with the smallest possible dose.
Some small studies show that Ginkgo biloba helps improve memory and, when taken with ginseng, can decrease impulsiveness and distractibility. Other studies have shown no or minimal improvement.
Talk with your doctor or a nutritionist before trying them. These herbs can cause health problems, especially if you have a history of diabetes, seizures, or schizophrenia.
All natural is not synonymous with safe. Many herbs and supplements have side effects, may cause or worsen health problems, or interfere with prescription medications.
Talk with your doctor before taking any supplements. When your doctor asks if you are taking any medications, be sure to tell him about all vitamins and supplements you take on a daily basis.
No substantial research exists to determine the recommended daily dose of most supplements. Pay attention to your body and adjust the dosage if you notice something is wrong. For example, you may be taking zinc supplements and find yourself getting stomachaches. Discontinue or cut back on the supplement to see if the stomachaches disappear.

These are the 3 Dietary Supplements You Should Take Daily – Organic Authority

Navigating the world of dietary supplements is overwhelming. Are taking daily multivitamins necessary? Whats a probiotic? Should you really be popping turmeric pills like everyone else?
Although whole food should be the first line of reaping vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, some supplements can offer a serious boost to your health and wellbeing.
You should always ask your doctor regarding taking new supplements and vitamins first, especially if taking certain medications as misusing supplements can result in serious health issues.
When choosing a supplement, look for a product that has a third party certification verifying the supplements quality such as NSF International, Consumer Lab, or United States Pharmacopeia. Or, head to a reputable health food store (such as Whole Foods Market or Pharmaca) that has a knowledgeable practitioner or employee on staff.
These are three dietary supplements I highly recommend taking daily to support whole body health and wellness. Heres to your daily dose.
Fish oil dietary supplements are filled with essential omega-3 fatty acids, healthy polyunsaturated fatty acids known to promote anti-inflammatory benefits, and brain and heart health.
These fatty acids are literally essentialbecause our body cannot produce them, so we must obtain them from food. The bad news is that many people are seriously deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, which has scary repercussions.
There are many omega-3 fatty acids, but the three to know are EPA, DHA, and ALA. Fatty fish (and fish oil dietary supplements) such as wild salmon and mackerel are rich in EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), both of which are essential for brain and mental health, cell membrane integrity, and controlling inflammation. ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid) is found in plants such as hemp seeds, walnuts, flax seeds, and chia seeds, but is not bioactive and needs to be converted into EPA and DHA.
Taking a high quality fish oil dietary supplement filled with omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA has shown numerous health benefits. Web MD notes that omega-3s are known to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and reduce symptoms of high blood pressure, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), joint pain, and skin ailments. Studies have also shown omega-3 fatty acids to reduce cognitive decline and even reverse and manageanxiety.
Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is a fat-soluble hormone found in some foods and produced by the skin endogenously when exposed to ultraviolet rays.
This vitamin plays critical roles in the body including strengthening the immune system, promoting calcium absorption in the gut, bone growth, and bone remodeling. In fact, without enough vitamin D, bones can become weak and brittle and can even lead to rickets in children and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, Research suggests vitamin D may also provide protection from hypertension, psoriasis, several autoimmune diseases (including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis), and reduce the incidence of fractured bones.
Vitamin D can be found in fortified foods including dairy products and cereals, cheese, eggs and egg yolks, fatty fish including mackerel, sardines, salmon, and tuna, and some mushrooms. If youre not consuming these foods regularly due to dietary restrictions, or live in a gloomy climate, you may be lacking in this vitamin.
I always recommend getting your vitamin D levels tested, and being prescribed the proper dietary supplement of vitamin D by a health care practitioner as taking too much vitamin D is a very real (and unpleasant) thing. Ask your doc for a blood test next checkup and talk about vitamin D.
Since gut health and the microbiome are so important (improving brain function, supporting immune health, and boosting happiness levels, for example) probiotics are trendy dietary supplements.
According to Dr. Joshua Axe, probiotics are essential for producing vitamin B12, butyrate and vitamin K2, crowding out bad bacteria, yeast and fungi, creating enzymes that destroy harmful bacteria, and absorbing nutrients and promoting a healthy digestion, among others.
These friendly bacteria can be found in fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented vegetables) along with fermented dairy and alternative fermented dairy products like yogurt, kefir, and cheese. Not slugging back a kombucha or eating sauerkraut on the regular, however, may be a good reason to supplement with a probiotic pill.
Those who may have recently taken antibiotics (which kill the bad and good bugs), or those who are routinely stressed or eat a Standard American Diet may also benefit from supplementing with a probiotic.
When choosing a supplement, (first ask your doc!) look for a refrigerated bottle with a high CFU count (around 15 billion to 100 billion organisms) and with strain diversity at least 10-30 different bacterial strains. Dr. Axe notes to look for strains like bacillus coagulans, saccharomyces boulardii, bacillus subtilis, and lactobacillus rhamnosus. These are hardier strains of bacteria, which can make it to the gut to colonize.

Air Force authorizes extension of F-16 service life to 2048! | SOFREP – SOFREP (press release) (subscription)

Looks like the US Air Force will have the F-16 Falcon in its arsenal for decades to come. Today it was announced that the Air Force has commissioned Lockheed Martin to extend theoverall flight hours of the F-16 from 8,000 to 12,000. This decision will ensure the the aircraft will remain active for many more years.
Interesting F-16 Video Footage
Following F-16 Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) structural modifications, the U.S. Air Force could safely operate Block 40-52 aircraft to 2048 and beyond, a release said.
Combined with F-16 avionics modernization programs like the F-16V, SLEP modifications demonstrate that the Fighting Falcon remains a highly capable and affordable 4th Generation option for the U.S. Air Force and international F-16 customers, said Susan Ouzts, vice president of Lockheed Martins F-16 program.
The Air Force claims it has the capacity in the F-16C community to recapitalize radar to serve the same function as the F-15 has done and thereby reduce the different systems that we have to sustain and operate, so that makes it more efficient, said Maj. Gen. Scott D. West, director of current operations and the services deputy chief of staff for operations at the Pentagon. Military.com
The Air Force has stated that it intends to replace the F-15C/D aircraft with the F-16 Falcon. What do you think? Is the Falcon capable enough to do the job of F-15?
The F-16 is a great aircraft and has served the US for many years as its premier air-to-air fighter. It is a good decision to keep it around as long as possible with the US having a limited number of F-22s and the F-35 seemingly more suited to the air to ground role.

US launches qualification tests for upgraded nuke bomb – The Morning Journal
Posted: at 5:34 pm
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. >> Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories are claiming success with the first in a new series of test flights involving an upgraded version of a nuclear bomb that has been part of the U.S. arsenal for decades.
Work on the B61-12 has been ongoing for years, and government officials say the latest tests using mock versions of the bomb will be vital to the refurbishing effort.
An F-16 from Nellis Air Force Base dropped an inert version of the weapon over the Nevada desert last month to test its non-nuclear functions as well as the planes ability to carry the bomb.
With a mere puff of dust, the mock bomb landed in a dry lake bed at the Tonopah Test Range.

Its great to see things all come together: the weapon design, the test preparation, the aircraft, the range and the people who made it happen, Anna Schauer, director of Sandias Stockpile Resource Center, said in a statement.
Scientists are planning to spend months analyzing the data gathered from the test.
Tracking telescopes, remote cameras and other instruments at the test range recorded information on the reliability, accuracy and performance of the weapon under conditions that were meant to replicate real-world operations.
More test flights are planned over the next three years, and officials with the National Nuclear Security Administration said the first production unit of the B61-12 developed under what is called the Life Extension Program is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
The B61-12 consolidates and replaces four older versions in the nations nuclear arsenal. Its outfitted with a new tail-kit assembly and other hardware.
The weapon is much different than the non-nuclear mother of all bombs used in Afghanistan this week to attack an Islamic State stronghold near the Pakistani border. The Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, or MOAB, isnt designed to penetrate like the B61-12 but rather create a large blast over the surface and it has to be ferried by a much larger plane given its size.
In Nevada, it took two passes before the pilot could drop the mock B61-12. A herd of wild horses had to be chased away on the first go-around.
With the run commencing, people gathered on balconies at the range despite knowing they would see only dust rising from the target miles away. A video feed showed the test bomb fall through the air after being released by the F-16.
Officials said it left behind a rather neat hole. Crews were able to dig the mock weapon out of the dirt so it could be packed up and returned to Albuquerque for further study.
