SEC baseball looking elementary for LSU freshman CF Zach Watson – SECcountry.com

Posted: at 12:58 am

BATON ROUGE, La. LSU freshman center fielder Zach Watson is not going to have a crisis of confidence any time soon.

Watson is the hottest bat in the Tigers lineup. Heading into a crucial series at Kentucky, hes reached base in 24 consecutive games and has hits in the last 12 games. Notably, hes very aware of those numbers and embraces the challenge of makingthem rise.

I think about it every at-bat, every game, Watson admitted. I go into the game knowing what streak Im on. Ive got to get a hit this game, Ive got to get on somehow. Its a big thing to me. To do this as a freshman is a big thing. I want to see how long I can keep it going.

That might sound me-first, but it really isnt. Watson knows a hitting streak doesnt mean anything if those knocks come in situations that do nothing to benefit the Tigers.

I dont want one hit, but multiple hits a game, he said. I want to do my best for the team.

Plus, he looks at it as a bit of a reverse superstition. Streaks and no-hitters are the types of things that ballplayers dont mention in the dugout, but Watson doesnt subscribe to that behavior.

Ive got to mention it every time, Watson said. If I dont mention it, Ill end it.

His ascent is notable foran LSU offense that went through the doldrums for its first few SEC series. Watson started the year on the bench. Coach Paul Mainieri then plugged him in to bolster LSUs defense in center even though he was a shortstop in high school.

It took some getting used to, but after practicing every day Im very used to it, Watson said. I feel like Ive played it forever.

Watson spent the bulk of his early games as LSUs No. 9 hitter. He thinks it was a crucial move by Mainieri that helped bolster a confidence that now seems unflappable.

It allowed me to be at the bottom of the lineup, and yet Im the second leadoff, Watson said. You need a good guy down there thats going to hit the ball thats got some wheels. I saw it as an opportunity to be the second leadoff and get on base one way or the other.

The experiment worked so well that Mainieri can no longer chance waiting for the first inning to end before Watson steps into the batters box. The West Ouachita (La.) High grad has batted in the No. 3 hole in front of slugger Greg Deichmann in LSUs past two games.

When I looked at the lineup and saw myself in the 3-hole I said Oh, I like this. I can get on and Greg can drive me in, Watson said. Its a win-win situation.

Watson doesnt appear to be much of a power threat, putting only 166 pounds on his 6-foot frame. But hes second behind Deichmann on the team with a .475 slugging percentage.

He doesnt come across as being a really athletic guy because hes just not a really big guy, Mainieri said. But hes really wiry strong, and he can run. And hes got a little bit of that it factor too.

Whether its the it factor or simply skill, Watson wants to make sure he can keep contributing to the offense and stay inthe heart of the order.

I dont want to give Coach Mainieri a reason to take me out of the 3-hole, Watson said. It might have been a (short-term)thing, I dont know. He knows what hes doing. I trust him.

I Have No Regrets About Choosing To Be Childfree – Huffington Post India

Posted: at 12:57 am

*By Shinjini Mehrotra

When I was a little girl, I loved to play house. I could spend hours having tea parties with my dolls arranged around me, and I loved "cooking" for my mom using my set of toy utensils. That was until I got a baby dollyou know the ones that look and feel like a real human baby? When I got one of those, I was obsessed. I would cuddle it, sing it songs, change its diaper, feed it milk, put it to sleep.

My mom was thrilled. She thought I had all the makings of a perfect wife and mother.

Fast forward to me in my late teens. I was at Pizza Hut with my then boyfriend (now husband) on what was one of our initial dates. But what should have been a romantic lunch turned into a horrifying encounterwith two 5-year-old kids. As they ran around the restaurant terrorising the rest of the patrons, their parents sat looking indulgently on. I could feel a headache coming on as those two ran around shouting, throwing cutlery, and being a general nuisance.

"I never want children," I whispered vehemently that day.

I was 19, he was 29. All I got was an indulgent look and a call for the check.

Fast forward to a recent evening. We were sitting on the sofa, heads bent over a smartphone, looking at photographs and going "Awww... how adorable! Such tiny little things! And they look so cute, sleeping on top of their mommy." We were looking at photographs of the most adorable Iranian wild cats, which are almost extinct, poor dears!

I'm in my mid-30s, he's in his late-40s. And no, still no children. But we do have two adorable fur babies, Simba and Loki!

Looking back on our years together, this decision to not have children seems almost organic. The 19-year-old me who didn't want children because they were such a nuisance grew into this 30-something me who is certain she doesn't want children for a lot of very valid reasons. And that 29-year-old indulgent boy who thought I was a kid and would grow out of that phase of not wanting children, is now a 40-something man who is thankful that I didn't.

Over the years, we have had our moments of doubt about our decision to be child-free. Like when we see really cute children who are well behaved (they exist!). Or all the times when my parents have sat us down and told us how much we will regret our decision to not have children. Or when my friends have told me what an awesome dad my husband would make because he is so good with their children.

At all those times, we revisit this decision. And whenever we talk about whether or not we should have children, the husband always says the same thing: "I will agree to have children only when you are 150% sure that you want them."

I've never been even 20% sure that I want kids. I feel no biological clock ticking and no desire to take on the life-changing responsibility of bringing up a child. And so we happily go about with our lives, following our interests and our careers. It's given us the mind space and the time that we need to follow the things that interest usfor the husband, it's his love for box-making and teaching DIY woodworking, and for me, it's the time to pursue my love for art, design, writing, and the Tarot.

We have had people tell us we're being short-sighted, self-absorbed, stupid; that we are bucking the "natural law" and fighting biology and evolution. But at the end of the day, we are the only ones who have to live with this decisionand either way, it is a big, life-altering choice. Yes, a choice.

Bringing an innocent child into this world should not be a default consequence of marriage. And it certainly shouldn't be something you resort to in an unstable marriage, hoping that a child will bring you closerheartbreakingly often, it doesn't. Having a child should be a thing of unbridled joy. If it isn't, maybe you should look for your joy elsewhere.

Let Them Be Snipped: A Proposal of Ideas – ODU Mace & Crown

Posted: at 12:57 am

Carla Leanzo | Contributing Writer

Selfish. Regret. Irresponsible. Not truly in love.

All of these are ideas circulating around individuals, coined childfree that have decided to deliberately not have children. It seems, though, that family and friends seem to hold more interest in what my partner and I are doing with our reproductive organs than we actually do. I have never wanted children, and I still dont.

After months of research, compiling an overstuffed folder to show my doctor so he can take me seriously, collecting surgeons phone numbers, and even educating people on the various birth control options out there, I have decided that permanent sterilization is the right choice for me.

Heres the kicker though: I, like many on childfree communities such as Reddit or The Childfree Life, are in our late teens and early twenties. We like sex, we love our partners, and we dont love kids. We are responsible with our birth control, yet want the peace of mind to know that theres no tubes there or no bullets in the gun (Sperm. Im talking about sperm, people) to cause an accident. So, whats the deal, anyways?

Currently, most doctors are unwilling to sterilize patients under 30 years of age. By allowing patients of legal adult ageeighteen years and aboveto decide what birth control method is right for them, even if permanent, could help solve the problems of overpopulation, birth control failure and bodily autonomy.

As a legal adult, a patient holds full rights to their body in regards to a safe, highly effective procedure. According to a sterilization pamphlet by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, tubal ligations still hold a failure rate of about .08 percent.

However, a less-broached option known as a bilateral salpingectomy (full removal of the fallopian tubes) almost entirely eliminates this failure rate since instead of the fallopian tubes being only clipped or blockedstill leaving room for an egg and sperm to possibly meetthe fallopian tube is entirely removed and any egg released is absorbed by the body.

In my recent interview with a doctor of Virginia Planned Parenthood, Dr. David Peters, I asked him if he would warn younger patients that came in claiming to want children if they would later regret their decision like so many doctors tell individuals that want to be sterilized.

He said, There is definitely a double standard when it comes to pregnancy. If I had my way, I would require a test of competency to allow pregnancy.

Wanting to remain childfree, and even go forth with the surgical procedure to ensure that, is a personal decision that should only be concluded by the couple involved. In speaking to my father about going forward with a bilateral salpingectomy, I was simply told, This is a decision you make on your ownyou have to be the one to decide what you are going to do and how you are going to deal with the outcomes.

This is a decision reached after long, hard reflection and research on what I was getting myself into. I know what choice is right for myself and I am confident in the conclusion that I have reached. If I am old enough to decide to start a family and have children, then Iand othersare old enough and responsible enough to decide not to.

Oftentimes, doctors will refuse to sterilize a patient for fear that, if the patient later changes their mind, the patient will sue aforementioned doctor for even performing the sterilization procedure to begin with.

However, the repercussions of a voluntary surgery, including later changing their mind, should be entirely the patients responsibility. To ensure this responsibility, the patient must sign a liability form that holds the patient responsible if they later change their mind, releasing the doctor from any and all responsibility. As with any surgery, patients are required to sign a consent form, but adding an appendix that would hold the patient liable for their choice should be added onto the consent forms.

Sterilization is also usually denied to patients because regret rates are a true occurrence that are not uncommon for the average young patient. There are, however, alternative options for couples if they do later want to start a family.

Although not always successful, in-vitro fertilization is an option if a couple wants to try for biological children. If in-vitro fertilization is not an option or is not wanted, then a consensual, surrogate pregnancy with a trusted female is also an option, or even adoption if a surrogate pregnancy is not possible. There are many options available to a couple if they change their mind later in life about starting a family.

Finally, it is not uncommon for an individual looking to undo their fertility to be asked, What if your partner later wants kids? Although sterilization is an entirely voluntary procedure, meaning that the patient must make their decision at their own discretion, one possible solution could be to encourage the patient to discuss their choice with their partner if they have one. This would give the couple the option to discuss such an influential life decision, although the decision would still ultimately rest upon the individual obtaining the procedure.

Sterilization is a procedure that is safe and effective, yet holds a stigma around it because it is permanent and there are other options such as the IUD, implant and other hormonal options such as the pill, patch or ring. However, for patients that are absolutely sure they wish to remain childfree and do not wish to manage contraceptives, sterilization is a valid option that allows a couple to freely enjoy their romantic life without the hassle of birth control or the fear of possible political influence on their availability.

Sterilization also offers peace of mind with the security of a vasectomy, even paired with a bilateral salpingectomy for the utmost effectiveness. In fact, upon talking to Dr. Peters, he enlightened me on the fact that, every study done has shown that people with children perform lower in every measurable form of success or happiness. This demonstrates how couples are no less valid for not wanting children than they would be if they did decide to reproduce, and even younger couples should be respected in their decision.

Trump Discussed Political Correctness and the ‘Counterproductive’ EPA With the Right’s Favorite Celebrities – New York Magazine

For the first time since he moved in, President Trump looked genuinely happy in the White House as he posed for a photo in the Oval Office with three wealthy celebrities whove crafted images as gunslinging, beer-drinking avatars of the working class.

Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, and Sarah Palin joined Trump at the White House Wednesday for an unannounced dinner that was revealed Thursday morning by a stream of social-media posts by Palin and Nugent. They ate lobster and lamb, discussed making America great again, and mocked Hillary Clinton.

While Palin shared only pictures from the trip, Nugent, who once suggested that President Obama fellate a machine gun, provided some details about what he and Trump discussed, in a blog post for the website Deer & Deer Hunting.

We discussed specifically the counterproductive follies of the Endangered Species Act and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the US Fish & Wildlife Service, BLM and other out of control bureaucracies.

In a Facebook Live video Thursday morning, Nugent added that he was invited to the White House by Trump himself. I was moved by the genuine sincerity, down-to-earth and most importantly believable concern and openness, uninhibitedness, family attitude, and spirit of President Trump when he greeted us at the White House, he said.

It was down to earth and absolutely human, Nugent added, as he and his wife, an ambassador for healthy living, flew home on a private jet to be with their dogs.

Kid Rock, who sold shirts last year suggesting that Trumps D was in the mouths of his haters, hasnt yet provided any social-media updates on the trip. His latest post is about how he prefers to smoke homegrown weed.

Political Correctness Backfires: Father of Deceased Files Lawsuit Against UT-Arlington – Liberty News Now

Posted: at 12:57 am

After being accused of sexual misconduct and facing punishment by the university without fair trial, Thomas Klocke committed suicide, according to a lawsuit by his father.

Thomas Klocke, a student at the University of Texas at Arlington, killed himself on June 2, a few days after the university punished him for allegedly making anti-gay comments to a fellow gay student. 24-year-old Klocke repeatedly denied the accusations at that time and claimed he was the one being harassed but never received a fair hearing.

This is a case that highlights the really epidemic problem that were seeing across the country about what happens when a college violates the legal rights of a student whos been accused of misconduct, said Kenneth Chaiken, an attorney for the deceaseds father, Wayne Klocke. The accused student can really suffer life-altering consequences in this case of the most tragic form, which was the decision to take his own life.

Under the pretext of Title IX, the Obama administration forced universities to deny male students their due process rights when theyre accused of sexual misconduct.

The lawsuit was reported by Watchdog.org and alleges that UT-Arlington was unsuccessful in complying with the watered-down due process protections ensured by Title IX and judged on its own policies. It also claims that Thomas was the one discriminated against on the basis of his sex.

A spokesperson for the university, Teresa Schnyder said the university followed its policies and procedures. However, she refused to give any details regarding the lawsuit.

This is a tragic situation and we express our deepest condolences to the family for their loss, Ms. Schnyder said. The welfare of our students is our highest priority. Any loss is a heartbreaking one for our entire community.

Thomas was only one credit short of graduating at the time of the incident. Fellow student Nicholas Watson accused him of typing gays should die on the web browser of his laptop in the middle of a May 19 class. Mr. Watson then responded on his own laptop, typing, Im gay. To this, Mr. Watson says, Thomas faked a yawn and said, Well then youre a ft.

Following this exchange of words, Mr. Watson says he asked Thomas to leave the classroom, to which Thomas allegedly replied, You should consider killing yourself.

Thomas refuted these claims in a meeting with a university administrator on May 23. He explained that Mr. Watson made sexual advances, stared at him continuously and called him beautiful, even after he typed into his laptop, stop Im straight. Thomas says he had a hard time concentrating after that and moved to the opposite side of the classroom.

He rejected Mr. Watsons allegations that he ever typed gays should die.

The lawsuit alleges that the rejected sexual advances may have compelled Mr. Watson to make up the story, possibly fearing the universitys policy against sexual harassment. In addition to the lawsuit against the university, Nicholas Watson is also being sued for defamatory statements.

First cloned cat ‘like any other’ 15 years later – Bryan-College Station Eagle

Posted: at 12:56 am

At the end of a long gravel road in East College Station, the world's first cloned cat -- now 15 years old -- lives in what longtime Texas A&M Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science researcher Duane Kraemer describes affectionately as a "kitty barn."

CC, also known as Copy Cat, was born in December 2001, the result of the 87th attempt at cloning a cat by Kraemer's lab at Texas A&M after several years of trying.

Kraemer, who recently retired from the university, said the success was simply the product of his team's work in pushing the boundaries of what is possible to accomplish.

Still considered among the crowning achievements of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kraemer said he is proud the achievement has reflected so well on the university.

"It was certainly a pleasure to be a part of the team that did it," Kraemer said. "I seem to get a lot more credit than I deserve for it, but it is pleasing to go over to the veterinary school and see CC's pictures around."

When it comes to questions about CC, Kraemer said the most common is about her personality.

Outside of her unusual origins, Kraemer said CC is just like any other cat with a personality all her own.

"Most people somehow think personality is going to be cloneable, but its not," Kraemer said. "She acts like most any cat, but, of course, cats vary."

Kraemer said CC even had a litter of her own years ago with a male cat named Smokey -- a test to see if she was genetically capable of reproduction. Today, she lives in a small house built by Kraemer and located in his back yard alongside Smokey and her three offspring.

Eleanor M. Green, Carl B. King dean of veterinary medicine, said Kraemer's work is an intersection of the college's history of forward-looking work in the fields of genomics and reproductive biology.

"[Kraemer] has been a pioneer his entire career," said Green, noting that cloning CC is probably his best-known work.

"His work also has contributed to genomics becoming a rapidly evolving discipline, including unlimited potential to change the way health is viewed and addressed in both animals and people," she said.

Green said while "cloning was once considered science fiction," Texas A&M was "quick to master" the process. Today, university researchers have cloned a number of animals including cattle, pigs, deer, horses, goats and more.

Outside of Kraemer's work in cloning, Green said Kraemer has also contributed to "numerous societally important areas," including the study of reproductive control for invasive species and the protection of endangered species.

Rs 3L stolen with cloned ATM card – Times of India

Texas School Board Approves New "Evolution" Language – San Antonio Current

Posted: at 12:56 am

The State Board of Education voted Friday morning tomakes changes to how evolution will be presented in high school biology classes. But if you blink, you may miss them.

The new curriculum, first discussed in February, moves away from language that openly questions the theory of evolution while still leaving plenty of room for interpretation.

The previous standard written in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for science implied that experts were uncertain about the theory of evolution. It asked students to "evaluate" scientific explanations for cell complexity. Many educators advocated for this change because science on evolution is clear, and creationism, a religious theory that explains how life came to exist, is not.In an earlier vote on the topic, one UT Biology professor said, "Our education goals should not be based on opinion polls, but on the expertise of our teachers and experts."

With Friday's subtle change, students will now need to, instead, "compare and contrast" scientific explanation for cellular complexity. Oddly enough the word atthe center of discussion "evolution" was not mentioned once in Friday's discussion. Instead of questioning evolution, doubt was cast on whether amendments were "teachable" and whether or not "compare and contrast" should come before "explanations for cellular complexity."

Reflecting on the Texas Board of Education's ban of the controversial and straight up racist textbook Mexican American Heritage, the changes made today are another win against non-factual textbook standards.

This decision might cause ripples on a national scale as publishers usually cater to Texas School Board, one of the most influential in the country. California aside, Texas buys the most textbook of any state about 48 million textbooks every year.
