The adorable reason why the blue lagoon in Pembrokeshire is to close for public access – Wales Online

From September 25 to November 5, the stunning blue lagoon is set to be closed for public access.

National Trust Cymru have closed off the area in order to protect the ongoing grey seals breeding colony. An estimated 5,000 seals could soon appear on the coastline of west Wales which is considered "vital" for around half the world's population of grey seals.

During this breeding season, the blue lagoon will be closed to public access in order to protect the breeding colony from disturbance. An estimated 1,400 seal pups expected to be born in the area.

National Trust Cymru is welcoming the return of the growing number by preventing public access to the sheltered area in an attempt to prevent disturbing the seals.

The decision was made as a result of the blue lagoon's increasing visitor numbers. Visitors will still be able to watch the wild creatures in their natural habitat from the coastal path and and coasteering activity providers who have signed up to the National Trusts Coasteering Agreement.

Mark Underhill, National Trust Cymrus Countryside Manager, Pembrokeshire said: There are two species of seal that can be found in Britain: the common seal and the grey seal. Only grey seals occur regularly in Pembrokeshire, where they are present all year around.

About half the worlds population of grey seal breed on our coastline and the total number in west Wales, mostly Pembrokeshire, is estimated to be about 5,000, with some 1,400 pups being born each year.

The breeding season is vital for our seal colonies here in Pembrokeshire, and we ask that visitors do not access the Blue Lagoon and that they follow the guidelines laid out by the Seal Alliance and Pembrokeshire Marine Code when on the coastal path.
