A heavy rain watch has been issued by MetService for the Bay of Plenty from Edgecumbe westwards.

Periods of heavy rain are forecast, and rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria. Thunderstorms are possible.

"Note, rain is expected to continue during the remainder of Sunday, and the Watch may be extended," says a MetService spokesperson.

Its a two-layer clothing day with an expected high of 15 degrees, and an overnight low of 11 degrees. Low tide is at 12.22pm and high tide is at 6.49pm. Sunset is at 5.03pm.

Today in history

This day in 1928 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. Wilmer Stultz piloted the Fokker F.VII aircraft, Earhart kept the flight log. They arrived at Burry Port in Wales, the United Kingdom, 20 hours and 40 minutes later.

In 1631 on this day Mumtaz Mahal died during childbirth. Her husband, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan I, then spent more than 20 years building her tomb, the Taj Mahal.

In 1755 future explorer James Cook joined the Royal Navy as an able-bodied seaman at Wapping, East London.

Head along to the Whanau Day at 'Matariki in the Village' at Tauranga Historic Village. Today's event runs from 9am - 2pm and will be celebrating the launch of the Matariki Exhibition programme, with live music, kapahaka, haka workshop and including the Matariki Market. There is an emphasis on encouraging kaupapa Mori stalls including, rongoa, raranga, candles, Mahi Toi, Winter Warmies, organic soaps, jewellery, and crystals. There are kai vendors, performance arts and much more. This is an inclusive winter event for everyone rain or shine so dress warmly. Check out the Skateschool Public Roller Disco at the Mount Sports Centre from 4pm - 6pm.All ages and abilities are welcome! Basic instruction and tips, Disco music, lights, fog machine and limbo competitions are all part of the fun.Skates are available for hire and protective padding provided.You may bring your own skates but please ensure they are clean and in good safe working order.
