Im a doomsday prepper and heres how you could survive nuke disaster as Ukraine-Russia tensions threaten W… – The US Sun

Posted: February 3, 2022 at 4:03 pm

A FORMER White House advisor-turned-doomsday prepper has shared tips on how to survive a nuclear disaster or any other world-ending event amid fears that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could spark WW3.

John Ramey, the founder of the popular how-to prepping website The Prepared, is urging Americans to start thinking rationally about the idea that, at any moment, society as we know it could completely collapse.

6

6

Such a societal implosion could be caused by nuclear war, a catastrophic natural disaster, or even through the proliferation of AI technology, Ramey warned in an interview with The Sun, insisting that there's no time like the present to start planning for the end of the world.

"Not only are the threats [against our civilization] changing, but they're converging in a way our world has never faced before," he said.

"So on top of all the historically-normal stuff like wars, natural disasters, car accidents, and inequality, we're now dealing with a dying planet and machines that can sincerely replace humans."

Ramey, who was an innovation adviser to the Obama White House, said he has been a prepper for the majority of his adult life, citing 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina as "early impactful events" on his beliefs.

But the longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur said for a number of years he was reluctant to out himself as such because of the stigmas and stereotypes surrounding the survivalist movement.

In years gone by, preppers have been routinely stereotyped as paranoid, gun-toting, right-wing older white men but in recent times prepping has become increasingly more mainstream, appealing to people from all walks of life.

For instance, in 2013, around 3.7 million Americans self-identified themselves as survivalists. Fast forward to 2021, and that number is estimated to be as high as anywhere between 10-20 million.

Ramey has also experienced the apparent surge in interest firsthand. Since the coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020, his website The Prepared, which he set up in 2018, has seen a 25x growth.

Explaining the apparent boom in interest, Ramey said: "It's tipped into the mainstream because enough 'normal' people have seen what the world is like, such as going through Trumpism, ever-worsening natural disasters, coronavirus and all the problems from climate change - and all of the other data points show we're headed in bad directions.

"All of these fears are rational. And the reward for prepping is proven," he added.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of pain - so it's naturally going to spread."

Ramey, who identifies himself as one of the first outed preppers in Silicone Valley, said he thought it was important to put himself "out there" because "it felt like there was a wall that needed to be broken through" in the public's perception of preppers.

"So many people like me have been prepping for a long time but felt the need to be closeted about it," he said.

"It didn't take long after people like me spoke up for those walls to come down."

Prepping certainly isn't a new phenomenon and its origins can be traced back as far as the 1930s in the UK and the United States, where perceived threats included government policies during the Great Depression, threats of nuclear warfare after World War II, and fears of imminent social and economic collapse.

Early members of the survivalist movement pointed to the Great Depression and the stock market crash of 1929 as examples of the need to be prepared for anything.

Several decades on, the threats facing our society may have changed but they remain equally as, if not more pressing, according to Ramey.

When asked what he believes the most likely cause of a societal collapse would be in the modern age, Ramey said it would likely be a combination of "the climate crisis causing things like mass migration, regional economic collapse, and fighting over scarce resources, combined with mass economic inequality and the failure of institutions (eg. democracy) leading to a conflict created by Russia, China, and other adversaries.

"Maybe you sprinkle a pandemic on top of that, too," he added.

Contrary to the stereotypes surrounding the survivalist movement, Ramey said he isn't preparing for a zombie apocalypse and has no plans to hide in a bunker beneath the ground in the event of a nuclear event.

The former tech CEO said he, and other modern preppers like him, "don't focus on scenarios that aren't worth living in, to begin with."

"No one wants to be the last person on earth, down in their bunker patting themselves on the back," he said.

"Instead, we think the world is going to get much harder in the next few decades than it was in the last few. So the question is, 'How do we come out of it?'"

To begin preparing for a disaster, Ramey urges any prospective preppers to "ignore the extreme stuff like nuclear bunkers" and start small, focusing on what their biggest risks are, which for most people, he says, is personal health and finances.

"Once those bases are covered, such as an emergency fund with three months worth of expenses, you must look to ensure you're able to survive in your home without any outside utilities or help for at least two weeks."

From there, Ramey suggests building a "bug-out bag" - a bag packed with survival supplies such as food, water, medications, radios, and flashlights - in the event of an emergency that requires rapid evacuation.

Ramey says all responsible members of society should begin prepping in some capacity, likening preparing for an emergency to buying homeowner's insurance or car insurance.

6

6

Where many Americans buy home insurance in the event their home is burned down in a fire, or buy car insurance in the event of a crash, Ramey says the same logic should be applied to preparing for potential catastrophes, likening do so to keeping a "rainy day fund."

Dr. Alex Bitterman, an architecture professor at Alfred State College in New York who studies how extreme events impact communities, agrees.

"There are two things that are very important, he told Downtown Magazine last year. The Boy Scouts of America, their motto was always 'Be prepared.' They've been teaching young people to be prepared for anything.

"That's a very resonant piece of our culture. Prepping is part of being an American part of being able to provide for ourselves. We take great pride in being a self-sustaining nation."

Bitterman added: "The other thing, as we magnify the more extreme events from terrorism to hurricanes to wildfires to storms and flooding, snowstorms, and extreme heat and cold, the way we build in this country is for a very stable climate not for these massive fluxes."

Essentially, what Ramey and Bitterman are saying is that individuals must prepare themselves for emergencies, particularly natural disasters, as the systems in place to protect society are ultimately ill-equipped to do so on a large scale.

According to Ramey, prepping is about "flattening the curve", meaning the more self-reliant an individual can become, the less likely they are to seek help, such as treatment in a hospital, and therefore the more the system will be able to cope with.

He shares a wealth of survival tips and reviews of survivalist products on The Prepared for "rational preppers" - or people who like to like to calculate risk and see prepping as a bit of a game.

Explaining the website's mission, Ramey said: "The Prepared teaches people how to get ready for life's inevitable disruptions, whether it's a car accident or job loss to bigger events like disasters and pandemics.

"We research and review gear, and write guides to walk you through prepping and learn skills like first aid. It's also the largest community of mainstream preppers people from all walks of life working on building the community and knowledge base, rather than bickering about culture-war junk."

Ramey's call to action comes as an aggressive show of Russian force on the eastern border of Ukraine has sparked concern among western nations in recent weeks that an invasion may be imminent - potentially leading to a multi-nation conflict.

Russia has already massed around 100,000 troops near Ukraine and the State Department ordered the families of all personnel at the US embassy in Kyiv to leave the country.

The USS Harry S. Truman is now under Nato's control for the first time since the end of the Cold War, while around 8,500 US forces have been put on "heightened preparedness" as tensions escalate.

Isabel Sawkins, a research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, thinks any potential conflict in Eastern Europe would not be confined to its borders.

She told The Sun: The crisis has the potential to extend its tentacles into all corners of the globe.

Sawkins warned thatChinesepresident Xi will be watching the Ukrainian crisis unfold.

The expert added: If Russia invades Ukraine, Xi will be emboldened to invade Taiwan. The idea of being part of one nation is similar Russia and Ukraine, and China andTaiwan.

Reports say that the US could send up to 50,000 troops to Eastern Europe if theUkrainiancrisis continues to deteriorate.

But, Biden is apparently reluctant to deploy forces to Ukraine as he doesnt want to enter into another conflict months following the Afghanistan crisis, according to theNew York Times.

The White House has yet to make a decision about whether to deploy forces to Ukraine.

Sawkins believes this week is crucial as the crisis continues to heat up, with Washington expected to issue a response to Moscow's aggression in days.

She called on the West to present a united front, urging nations must make it clear that Russia has to back down.

She said: There is no united effort.Putinknows that hes managed to dig these sorts of crevasses to basically isolate certain parts of the West."

Sawkins warned that if the West cannot unite over its strategy then aRussian invasion is inevitable.

William and Kate have panic room and tunnels at home in fear of WW3 biological warfare – Daily Star

Posted: at 4:03 pm

Prince William and Kate Middleton have installed a panic room and secret tunnels at their Kensington Palace home in order to protect their family from biological warfare.

The panic room also reportedly includes an air filtration system, along with an escape tunnel, Global Citizen reports.

According to reports, when William was younger, he along with his brother Harry and their Diana mother would use the secret tunnel to sneak out of the Palace and go to McDonalds.

Seeing as the Duke of Cambridge is second in line to the throne only behind his father Charles and his son Prince George is third in line after him, their security is of utmost importance.

The Cambridges arent the only ones with a panic room, however, with the Queen leading the way with two panic rooms, both at Windsor Castle and at Buckingham Palace.

The rooms were installed over 15 years ago and are encased in 18ins thick, bullet-resistant, fire-retardant steel walls.

They are designed to withstand poison gas, bombs or terrorist attacks and are equipped with secure communications, beds, washing equipment, and enough food and water to last for at least a week.

Similarly, first in line to the throne, Prince Charles, also has a secret room at Highgrove House.

It features an iron room the size of a shipping container that can be used by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall in the unlikely event that someone breaches through their security.

According to some security experts, the secret steel panic room at Highgrove House is so strong that if the property was targeted in an airstrike or terrorist attack, the royals inside would survive.

World War 3: HereS what would happen if a nuclear bomb was dropped on London in event of WW3 – Portsmouth News

Posted: January 19, 2022 at 10:54 am

Britain has provided further self-defence weapons and training to Ukraine amid concerns over a possible Russian invasion.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said light anti-armour defensive weapons systems would be supplied to Ukraine, with a small number of UK personnel travelling to the country to provide training.

The announcement came after he warned tens of thousands of Russian troops are positioned next to the Ukrainian border, explaining the deployment is not routine and they are equipped with tanks, armoured fighting vehicles, rocket artillery and short-range ballistic missiles.

He told MPs there is real cause of concern over the scale of the force being assembled by the Kremlin, supported by Russian air and maritime forces.

The News previouslyrevealed that Portsmouth was one of the key Russian targets during the cold war along with many other cities across the country.

NUKEMAP calculates the predicted number of fatalities and injuries that would be caused - based on the size of a the bomb dropped on the city for this story we have selected the option of the bomb exploding as an airblast.

So if the Little Boy 15 kiloton bomb, which was dropped by the US on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in WW2, fell on the City of Westminster of London it is estimated that 76,460 would be killed and 245,960 injured.

The fireball would have a radius of 180m, the air blast radius - which would severely damage buildings would be 340m and the radiation radius where death rates would be between 50% and 90% - would be 1.2km.

However the Little Boy' hasnt been used since WW2, so if a 350kt W-78 nuke currently the largest option on NUKEMAP was used on London it would be much more devastating.

With an estimated 565,980 people being killed and 1,629,370 injured if it fell on the City of Westminister

The fireball radius would be 0.63km, the air blast radius - which would severely damage buildings would be 4.95km, the thermal radiation radius causing third degree burns, scaring, disablement, and can require amputation - would be 7.67km.

All of this is hypothetical and the risk of a nuclear bomb falling on London or anywhere in the World is extremely low.

WW3 fears over Russias plot to justify Ukraine invasion as expert warns escalating tensions may spark ma… – The US Sun

Posted: January 17, 2022 at 8:08 am

RUSSIA'S reported plot to justify a Ukraine invasion has sparked World War 3 fears as an expert warns escalating tensions may trigger a major conflict.

Concerns are mounting after a US official reportedly revealed how intelligence suggests Russia has prepositioned a group of operatives to conduct a false-flag operation ineastern Ukraine in an attempt to create a reason to invade.

6

6

6

Taras Kuzio, an associate research fellow at Henry Jackson Society, told The Sun US that a "major war" may erupt and said the "crisis is likely to escalate before it de-escalates."

It comes as a US official told CNN that intelligence teams found evidence that the operatives are trained in urban warfare and in using explosives to carry out a disguised attack against Russia's own forces.

The claims were echoed by Ukraine's Ministry of Defense on Friday, saying Russian special services are preparing provocations against their own forces in an attempt to frame Ukraine.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan hinted at the report during a briefing on Thursday.

"Our intelligence community has developed information, which has now been downgraded, that Russia is laying the groundwork to have the option of fabricating the pretext for an invasion," Sullivan said.

"We saw this playbook in 2014. They are preparing this playbook again, and we will have, the administration will have, further details on what we see as this potential laying of the pretext to share with the press over the course of the next 24 hours."

On Friday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry told CNN that "the military units of the aggressor country and its satellites receive orders to prepare for such provocations."

Russian have continued to claim they will not attack Ukraine unless NATO guarantees it will never let Kiev join the US-led alliance.

Kuzio told The US Sun: "The last thing that NATO wants is for a war to spill over into member states. They want it to remain constrained in Ukraine."

He added that Putin has an obsession" with Ukraine and he will always be fixated on the country.

"Putin is president for life he cant leave office. Thats the way their system is. He knows that he cant trust the people around him theres no honor amongst thieves," Kuzio said.

He has an obsession with Ukraine he cant rebuild his empire without Ukraine. So he will always be fixated. Theres frustration and anger with the West, and he thinks its the West preventing Ukraine from coming back to Russia.

He always sees his war against Ukraine as part of his general war with the West. He doesnt separate them at all.

"You will have crises periodically throughout Putins presidency. When you have this kind of crisis, theres always a danger that things can escalate," he added.

Kuzio said that if a major war erupts - it could "feel like the 1980s again".

It depends on what Russia does in Ukraine. If it escalates into a full, major war, then whats going to happen is the Americans, Brits, Canadians are going to supply Ukraine with very good military equipment and itll be like the 1980s again," the expert said.

Some of that equipment like stingers will kill Russians. It will bring down Russian helicopters."

6

On Friday, thousands of Russian troops were seen taking part in combat drills on the border with Ukraine.

The exercises took place at the Kuzminsky and Kadamovsky training grounds in the south-westernRussianregion of Rostov Oblast, on the border with Ukraine.

According to The Russian Ministry of Defense, a total of over "2,500 servicemen of the Southern Military District took part in the combat training events, and around 100 T-72B3 tanks were involved."

Western intelligence officials believe that up to 100,000Russiansoldiers have been massed near Ukraine's borders.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Western countries had shared intel about Moscow military movement after the USwarned of a potential attack.

Zelensky said in a speech on his website: "I hope the whole world can now clearly see who really wants peace and who is concentrating nearly 100,000 soldiers at our border."

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry previously put the number of Russian troops near the border at 90,000 on November 3.

World War 3: Could Russia attack these former Cold War hit list targets including Portsmouth in event of WW3? – Portsmouth News

Posted: at 8:08 am

Ukraine is an aspiring member of NATO which includes the likes of the UK, USA and more.

An invasion of the country by Russia could flare tensions between the nation and the west.

However of course despite this the chances of WW3 remain extremely slim although the Doomsday Clock, which tracks the possibility of the end of the World, is at two minutes to midnight, the closest approach to midnight, matching that of 1953.

The News previously revealed a hit list of Russian targets in the UK in the event of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union during Cold War.

Cold War predictions drawn up in secret by the British government reveal the extent of a Russian nuclear strike on the UK.

Portsmouth's Naval Base was on the list of target.

At the height of nuclear tensions in the 1970s and 80s, at least 38 towns and cities were feared to be at risk from a strike from the Soviet Union and Portsmouth was one of the key targets.

Dozens of army, navy and air force bases were also earmarked for destruction, with Portsmouth Naval Base topping the list of strategic targets.

The city is home to a majority of the Royal Navys fleet, as well as the Senior Services HQ where much of its top brass are located.

Bases in nearby Gosport and Fareham also house thousands sailors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously made no secret of the fact he is willing to use nukes and relations between the UK and Russia have reached new lows over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal as fears of a new Cold War grow.

UK defence officials drew up a list of 106 locations they believed were a target for Russia marking them as probable nuclear targets.

Alongside these major population centres were 23 RAF bases, 14 USAF bases, 10 radar stations, eight military command centres, and 13 Royal Navy bases.

It is not known if the list of probable targets has changed since the Cold War.

WW3 fears as North Koreas 2nd missile test in a week forces US aircraft to be grounded as protests erupt… – The Sun

Posted: at 8:08 am

ALL aircraft in Southern California were ordered to remained grounded on Monday reportedly due to another North Korean missile test - the second in a week - as protests erupted in Japan over the launch.

Flights at Sacramento International Airport and San Francisco International Airport were briefly ground, as confirmed by the airports.

5

The planes were halted for about five minutes. An on-duty manager at SFO said it was a nationwide issue.

North Korea appeared to test fire their second ballistic missile in less than a week. South Korea and Japan condemned the launch.

South Koreas Joint Chiefs of Staff said the suspected missile launch was detected around 7:27am GMT from an inland area of North Korea.

An emergency meeting was held by South Koreas National Security Council, where strong regret was expressed about the missile test.

Members of the NSC urged North Korea to swiftly respond to the international communitys expectations for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, and agree to resume dialogue and cooperation, said the Blue House in a statement.

North Korea claimed to have tested a hypersonic missile on Wednesday, underscoring supreme leader Kim Jong-uns vow on New Years to strengthen the military after talks with South Korea and the US had stalled.

If the projectile followed the trajectory of a normal ballistic missile, it would have flown less than 435k miles [700km], said Japans defense ministry.

This is similar to the recent tests of short-range ballistic missiles by the elusive country.

The South Korean military is cooperating with its allies in the US and closely monitoring the situation with their neighbors up north in preparation for future launches.

North Korea is attempting to use repeated tests to normalize its missile capabilities, said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor of international studies at Seouls Ewha University.

Easley said the country is trying to portray itself as being engaged in improvements for self-defense.

At the same time, Pyongyang is challenging international sanctions, testing what it can get away with while the United Nations Security Council remains divided, he said.

After last weeks missile launch, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called the incident regrettable while speaking to reporters.

The most recent launch came just a day after the United Nations issued a joint statement condemning the previous test.

These actions increase the risk of miscalculation and escalation and pose a significant threat to regional stability, said US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield in a statement on Monday.

Such tests only improve the Norths capabilities, but expands what it can offer illicit arms clients and dealers around the world, she added.

Strategy game Warno transforms the Cold War into WW3 with new trailer – NME.com

Posted: December 23, 2021 at 9:53 pm

A new trailer for Warno the spiritual successor to Wargame has been released, showcasing a strategy game that imagines a Cold War escalating into full-blown World War 3.

Warno is a Cold War-era real-time strategy (RTS) game that examines a fictional scenario where war between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces broke out.

The strategy game describes itself as a World War 3 battle simulator and will launch in Early Access for Steam on January 20, 2022. As the Early Access launch is just over a month away, developer Eugen Systems has detailed what fans can expect.

Players will be able to take control of hundreds of units to win battles. These units range from conscripts to Spetsnaz, main battle tanks, attack helicopters, and stealth strike aircraft. Like any well-balanced real-time strategy, these units will all have unique strengths and weaknesses that players must account for when utilising them in battle.

Warno will launch with multiplayer, and fans can choose to fight against either other players or AI enemies. Theres also a co-op mode available for those whod rather fight alongside others in multiplayer, including a 10v10 game mode. Its also been confirmed that multiplayer will include a ranked mode for any players that are feeling more competitive.

Leaning into its alternate-history route, Warno will also feature a massive turn-based Army General strategy campaigns depicting some of the hardest-fought what if scenarios of a Cold War turned hot in a vicious fight across Western Europe.

When Warno launches in Early Access, players will be able to play as two nations the United States and the Soviet Union and play skirmish battles, however, there are plans for it to be updated with new content ranging from units to extra scenarios, campaigns and mechanics.

In other news, sci-fi horror game Hidden Deep has confirmed a release date for its Early Access launch.

WW3 fears as Putin warns of possible military response over aggressive NATO – Daily Star

Posted: at 9:53 pm

Fears of World War Three have escalated as Vladimir Putin has warned of a potential military response in reply to an ever aggressive NATO.

During a speech to top commanders on Tuesday afternoon, the Russian President said he will consider a military response if his country feels threatened by NATO.

He argued that the West is to blame for the rising tensions and demanded security guarantees from NATO, the Guardian reports.

This came following a build-up of tanks and artillery for what could constitute an invasion force against Ukraine within weeks.

What the United States is doing in Ukraine is at our doorstep, he said of Washingtons support for Kiev.

And they should understand that we have nowhere further to retreat to. Under protection, they are arming and urging on extremists from a neighbouring country at Russia. Against Crimea, for instance. Do they think well just watch idly?

Putin did not specifically refer to the possibility of an offensive operation in Ukraine and Russian diplomats have previously suggested a response could employ other measures, such as moving intermediate-range missiles within striking distance of European targets.

By massing troops at Ukraines borders, however, Russia has made it clear that an attack is on the table.

He said: If our western counterparts continue a clearly aggressive line, we will undertake proportionate military-technical countermeasures and will respond firmly to unfriendly steps. Id like to stress that we are fully entitled to do that.

To stay up to date with all the latest news, make sure you sign up to one of our newsletters here.

Parts of his speech on Tuesday seemed to try and give Russia a justification to launch a new military campaign in Ukraine.

Russias defence minister, Sergei Shoigu, said an unnamed private US military company had acquired chemical weapons and was planning to launch a provocation in the east Ukrainian cities of Avdeevka and Krasny Liman.

Putin repeated demands that the West make legal guarantees to ensure Russias security but said he would have difficulty trusting the US to abide by a treaty as it has withdrawn from treaties before, such as missile defence treaties and the Treaty on Open Skies.

He told commanders: We need long-term legally binding guarantees. You and I know well that even they, legal guarantees, cannot be trusted because the United States easily withdraws from all international agreements it loses interest in for one reason or another giving no explanations whatsoever.

Russian invasion of Ukraine will spark World War 3, Kiev fears as Putin fires hypersonic nuke just 22… – The Sun

Posted: at 11:05 am

A FULL-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine will spark World War 3, Kiev fears as Moscow test fires its hypersonic nuke missile.

Tensions in Eastern Europe are at boiling point with Vladimir Putin amassing around 100,000 troops close to the Ukrainian border.

5

5

Yuliia Laputina, Ukraine's minister for veterans affairs, said Russian aggression would spread across the region if her country was invaded.

She told Sky News: "If Russia will invade you know, you should also take care about the Balkans.

"What Russians are doing now in Serbia - they try to provoke a situation in the Balkans.

"But we also take into account [the beginning of] World War Three."

On the subject of WW3, she added: "Yeah. Because geopolitically, it looks like this is a possible scenario. So we should pay attention to the Ukrainian issue because of the security of the continent.

"This - the spreading of war in case of Russian invasion to Ukraine - will be much wider than Ukraine."

The minister, who previously served in Ukraine's equivalent of MI5, said her country's 400,000-strong veterans - aged from 20 to 60-years-old - would be willing to fight in a war against Russia if needed.

This comes as Russia staged a new test of its 6,670 mph hypersonic Zircon missile.

The lethal weapon was seen on video fired under a cloak of darkness from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate in the White Sea hitting a coastal target at the Chizha training ground.

The unstoppable Zircon is due to be deployed imminently, first with the Russian Northern Fleet which conducts operations in the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, reports say.

Russia had issued NOTAM-warnings (Notice to Airmen) relating to rocket tests in both the White and Barents seas.

Moscow boasts the Mach-9 capable missile can evade all current Western defences.

The Barents Observer highlighted that satellite images show a suspected new storage and maintenance facility for the Zircon at Okolnaya Bay, in the Arctic Murmansk region.

5

"The trials of the Zircon shipborne missile system are successfully coming to an end, said chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov .

These trials proved the possibility of launching this hypersonic missile from both a surface ship and a nuclear-powered submarine from the submerged position.

Russian President Putin has ordered the Zircon missile to be deployed next year by the Russian Navy boasting that it istruly unparalleled in the world.

Most recently, therewas a successful testof the hypersonic weapon from a frigate in the White Sea on November 18.

A month earliertheZirconwas fired from a submarine for the first time.

The Kremlin has started full-scale production of the missile at a top-secret plant near Moscow, it has been reported.

In Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine, Russia was conducting tactical exercises with live firing , according to Interfax.

Some of the drills are just 22 miles from the border of the rebel-held Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine.

The West has expressed deep concern over the number of Russian forces in Voronezh region.

Separately, in Orenburg region dozens of rocket systems staged a raid in the steppe targeting a simulated enemy.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has insisted that her country has no aggressive intentions.

We have repeatedly said that on our sovereign territory we have every right to move military units at our own discretion, she said.

But she claimed that NATO is doing everything to destabilise the situation on the continent and undermine the foundations of European security."

The Zircon hypersonic missile

Russia's Zircon missile - which can be fitted with a nuclear warhead - is designed to cruise at more than five times the speed of sound.

It has a range of up to 620miles and can be fired from ships and from submarines.

The state-of-the-art weapon is too fast for current US anti-missile systems.

In November, the rocket was test fired from a ship in the White Sea.

It successfully destroyed its target located 400km away.

In October, Moscow launched the terrifying missile from a submarine.

The weapon travelled at speeds of over Mach 8 - eight times the speed of sound.
