North Korea WW3: Japan prepares for EVACUATION after missile tests – Daily Star

Posted: June 5, 2017 at 7:38 am

NORTH KOREAS latest missile tests have forced Japan to undergo evacuation drills with over fears of an impending attack.

Kim Jong-uns tyrannical state fired an unidentified warhead last week which fell close to the neighbouring country.

Days after on Sunday (June 4) hundreds of residents from a small Japanese coastal town took part to simulate a ballistic missile strike.

The town of Abu which faces the Sea of Japan is surrounded by the Yamaguchi prefecture range, which host a major US Marine Corps air station.

I was able to stay calm and evacuated in a few minutes, 67-year-old Yuriko Suewaka, who was among the 280 people involved in the exercise, told Jiji Press.

As WW3 tensions escalate further, there are plans to conduct more drills later this month in Yamagata and Niigata which both also face the Sea of Japan.

The government has requested local communities to prepare for the holding of an evacuation drill, an official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un looks on during a ballistic rocket test-fire

North Koreas long-running tension with the West hit new levels on Friday after a US official claimed the country does not have the capability to stop Kims deadly missiles.

John F. Tierny executive director of the Centre for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation said the system aimed to intercept nuclear bombs has failed to destroy its target three out of the last five attempts.

Kim is also providing a new threat with claims he has an army of 6,000 hackers ready to gain access into Western computer systems.

North Korea WW3: US official claims defences ‘can’t stop Kim Jong un’s nukes’ – Daily Star

Posted: June 3, 2017 at 12:40 pm

THE US will not be able to stop a North Korean nuke, an official has claimed.

John F. Tierney, executive director of the Centre for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, believes the US may not currently have the capability to stop Kim Jong-un's deadly missiles.

Donald Trump successfully tested a system aimed at intercepting nukes from North Korea in the Californian desert this week.

But Tierney warned that, despite the success, the US is not bulletproof.

Six tests have failed to destroy the target, including three of the last five tries

"Of the 10 tests of the system since 2004, when the Bush administration prematurely declared it operational, six have failed to destroy the target, including three of the last five tries," he wrote in the New York Times.

"The timing and other details are provided in advance, information that no real enemy would provide. The weather and time of day are just right for an intercept.

"An adversary would use complex countermeasures, such as decoys, alongside the real missile to try to fool the defence system, but only simplistic versions of this trick have been included.

"Under realistic testing conditions, the programs success rate would almost certainly be lower."

Kim has promised "weekly" tests in the face of US aggression and recently carried out North Korea's largest nuke test ever.

In response, Trump has despatched his "armada" led by the USS Carl Vinson to the peninsula.

Trump has also vowed to keep developing his nuclear missile defence programme.

But Tierney warned that a peaceful solution is the only way to end the North Korean crisis.

"If lawmakers are serious about defending the homeland from rogue states like North Korea, they should prioritise diplomatic action," he added.

"Expanding the programme before it is proved to be effective under realistic conditions would mark the height of irresponsibility.

"The Missile Defence Agency might be celebrating now, but the latest test is at best a small step forward on a very long journey."

President Moon Jae-in claims the US Defence Ministry failed to inform him that four more launchers for the controversial system had been brought into the country.

And he said it was very shocking to learn about the installation days after the fact.

Now his government will launch an investigation into the new launchers amid reports they could back off from the ongoing conflict.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system battery was initially deployed in March in the southeastern region of Seongju.

The missile defence system was installed with two of its maximum load of six launchers to counter a growing North Korean missile threat.

But Mr Moon has called for a more moderate approach to Pyongyangs threat - and even called for a parliamentary review of the THAAD system in his recent election campaign.

It also has a mutual defence treaty with Seoul dating back to the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in a truce that has left the peninsula in a technical state of war.

South Korea's Defence Ministry said on Tuesday it had conducted a joint drill with a US supersonic B-1B Lancer bomber on Monday, after North Korea's state media accused America of staging "a nuclear bomb dropping drill".

The US military in South Korea did not have immediate comment on Moon's comments. The South Korean military also has yet to comment.

Japan calls for action amid WW3 fears as North Korea launches another missile – Express.co.uk

Posted: May 30, 2017 at 2:39 pm

Shinichi Iida, Minister for public diplomacy at the Japanese Embassy, called for an end to dialogue for dialogue's sake after the missile entered Japanese waters.

He said country was very concerned by the provocation, as the missile flew about 280 miles (450km) before landing in the Japanese exclusive economic zone, within the Sea of Japan.

HetoldSky News: We are very much concerned with yet another provocation by North Korea.

North Korea has conducted nuclear tests twice and has launched more than 30 ballistic missiles in just over a year.

It is obviously causing a very serious threat, not only to the region but also to the entire world.

GETTY SKY

In that sense, it is quite significant that the G7 Summit that was held in Italy a couple of days ago, leaders agreed on the fact that North Korea is a first priority issue for international security.

Mr Iida said China needed to assert its influence on the rogue nation, under the control over Kim Jong-un, to halt the tests and to abolish its nuclear and ballistic missile programme.

He said: Prime Minister Shinz Abe and President Donald Trump had a very good meeting and they agreed that Japan-US cooperation, and also with South Korea, is critically important.

China also agreed it should play a larger role in light of the fact that 90per centof North Koreas trade is with China.

I think it is quite important to recognise that after 22 years of endeavour to make the North Koreans halt their nuclear and ballistic missile programme, it simply hasnt worked out.

Under the current circumstances, dialogue for dialogue sake doesnt carry much meaning

Shinichi Iida

Under the current circumstances, dialogue for dialogue sake doesnt carry much meaning.

I think it is important to keep up the pressure on North Korea, that is a very important aspect that everybody should understand.

Mr Iida added for the UNs sanctions against the hermit state to have its intended effect, North Koreas foreign currency revenues need to be cut.

He said: The Untied Nations Security Council has been passing very strong resolutions, again and again, to demand North Korea to abolish its nuclear programme and ballistic missile systems and it has been sanctioning North Korea.

And the most important element for the economic sanctions authorised by the Security Council towork,is to cut the foreign currency revenues of North Korea.

China can play a very critical role in convincing, in asserting its influence over North Korea and convince it over the need to immediately abandon its nuclear programme and abolish its ballistic missile programme.

Jong-uns launched the Scud missile from the eastern region of Wonsan, after a series of test-launches of missiles in recent weeks.

The launch was immediately reported to South Korea's president Moon Jae-in, who called a meeting of the National Security Council at 7.30am local time (10.30pm GMT), the country's office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Yoshihide Suga, Japans chief cabinet secretary, said: This ballistic missile launch by North Korea is highly problematic from the perspective of the safety of shipping and air traffic and is a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

"Japan absolutely cannot tolerate North Korea's repeated provocative actions. We have strongly protested to North Korea and condemn its actions in the strongest terms.

No damage to planes or ships has been detected.

Pyongyang said it performed a successful launch of what it called an intermediate-range ballistic missile that met all technical requirements for mass production.

US President Donald Trump has vowed to increase sanctions against the belligerent North.

The US Commander-in-Chief has also sent several aircraft carriers to the region to perform exercises with allies Japan and South Korea.

But top US defence chiefs believe the hermit kingdom could still develop nuclear weapons.

The head of the US Defence Intelligence Agency, Vincent Stewart, said Kim is on an inevitable path to obtaining a nuclear missile if his regime is left unchecked.

But he added it may take several years for this to be a possibility.

North Korea crisis: Donald Trump sends nuclear submarines as he ramps up WW3 tensions – Express.co.uk

The US president told his Philippine counterpart Washington had sent two nuclear submarines to waters off the Korean Peninsula.

Donald Trump told Rodrigo Duterte the US has a lot of firepower over there, according to the New York Times which quoted a transcript of an April 29 call between the two.

The US president said: We cant let a madman with nuclear weapons let on the loose like that. We have a lot of firepower, more than he has times 20, but we dont want to use it.

We have a lot of firepower over there. We have two submarines the best in the world we have two nuclear submarines

Donald Trump

We have a lot of firepower over there. We have two submarines the best in the world we have two nuclear submarines not that we want to use them at all.

Ive never seen anything like they are, but we dont have to use this, but he could be crazy so we will see what happens.

The report was based on a Philippine transcript of the call that was circulated under a "confidential" cover sheet by the Americas division of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.

A senior Trump administration official in Washington, who was not authorised to publicly discuss the call and insisted on anonymity, told the New York Times the transcript was an accurate representation of the call between the two leaders.

Mr Trump has previously said a major, major conflict is possible with North Korea is possible because of its nuclear and missile programmes and that all options are on the table but that he wants to resolve the crisis diplomatically.

The ground-to-ground medium-to-long range ballistic missile

North Korea has vowed to develop a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead that can strike the mainland US, saying the programme is necessary to counter US aggression.

In a show of force, the US sent the nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier to waters off the Korean peninsula, where it joined the USS Michigan, a nuclear submarine that docked in South Korea in late April.

Tensions have escalated on the Korean Peninsula as the North continues to defy UN sanctions over its nuclear missile programme.

Earlier today the South Korean military said as unidentified object that flew across the border from North Korea on Tuesday was most likely to have been a balloon carrying propaganda leaflets rather than a drone.

South Korea fired warning shots at the object as it crossed the border, and it disappeared from radar.

North Koreas only ally China has pushed for dialogue with North Korea and the full implementation of UN sanctions over Pyongyang's ballistic missile and nuclear tests, skirting questions about Beijing's talks with the United States on possible new measures.

REUTERS

Almost a month ago Washington began discussions with China on strengthening UN sanctions.

It comes a week after Pyongyang said it launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile which met all technical requirements and could now be mass-produced, although US officials questioned the extent of its progress.

The Security Council first imposed sanctions on Pyongyang in 2006 and ratcheted up the measures in response to five nuclear tests and two long-range missile launches. North Korea is threatening a sixth nuclear test.

North Korea WW3: US preparing to shoot down Kim’s next nuke as all-out WAR edges closer – Daily Star

Posted: at 7:55 am

THE US is getting ready to shoot down Kim Jong-uns next nuclear missile as fears of World War 3 reach an all-time high.

GETTY

US President Donald Trumps military is carrying out unprecedented tests aimed at preparing to shoot down a nuclear missile launched from North Korea.

Pentagon officials said the tests, at the Vanderberg Air Force base in California, will be used in preparation for North Korea's growing threat."

The tests are designed to mimic the effects of a North Korean nuke strike on the US and put into practice Trumps extensive missile defence network.

The Pentagon likens it to hitting a bullet with a bullet

Christopher Johnson, a spokesman for the Missile Defense Agency, told the AP news agency: The basic defensive idea is to fire a rocket into space upon warning of a hostile missile launch.

The rocket releases a 5-foot-long device called a "kill vehicle" that uses internal guidance systems to steer into the path of the oncoming missile's warhead, destroying it by force of impact.

Officially known as the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, the Pentagon likens it to hitting a bullet with a bullet.

The target will be a custom-made missile meant to simulate an ICBM, meaning it will fly faster than missiles used in previous intercept tests.

It will also be an almost exact replica of the ICBMs used by the North Korean tyrant.

We conduct increasingly complex test scenarios as the program matures and advances, Johnson added.

Testing against an ICBM-type threat is the next step in that process.

The news will come as a devastating blow to Kim, who has promised weekly missile tests in response to US aggression.

Last month Trump also test fired his own nuke at the California missile site in a chilling statement to the tubby tyrant.

WW3 fears as Russia reactivates satellites that could be adapted to … – Express.co.uk

Posted: May 23, 2017 at 11:04 pm

GETTY

As political tensions across the globe continues to rise, the western powerhouses have been keeping an eye on Russian activity and were surprised to see the reactivated three satellites in space.

The satellites, Kosmos-2491, Kosmos-2499 and Kosmos-2504, have been inactive for a few years, but they are now thought to be back online.

Suspicions were raised when last month, Kosmos-2504, which had gone offline in October 2015, travelled completely off its orbit to come within 1,200 metres of a Chinese weather satellite that China destroyed as part of an anti-satellite rocket test in 2007.

Kosmos-2499 has also been manoeuvring in an odd fashion in recent months.

GETTY

Anatoly Zak, a Russian-born journalist and space historian, told the publication there is a chance Russia is preparing to use the satellites as weapons.

He said: Looking at the history of space technology, it often starts with a small and cheap satellite that's easy to launch, then the same technology gets incorporated into something larger.

You can probably equip them with lasers, maybe put some explosives on them.

If [one] comes very close to some military satellite, it probably can do some harm.

GETTY

Dr Laura Grego, a space expert with the Massachusetts-based Union of Concerned Scientists, said Russia may have been keeping the satellites purposefully offline as to not raise suspicions.

She told the Daily Beast: I do find it very interesting the satellite would go dormant for two years and then come back to life to manoeuvre.

Getty Images/Blend Images RM

1 of 10

New Zealand, however secluded, has a stable democracy and is not involved in any major world conflicts

One strategy to keep satellites stealthy is to pretend they are debris, i.e. not to have them manoeuvre at all at first, and then come to life later.

To be confident this works, you might want to be able to test if your equipment works after being idle for months or years.

North Korea fires medium range ballistic missile brushing past Japan as WW3 tensions mount – Express.co.uk

Posted: at 11:03 pm

South Korea's Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement the projectile took off on Sunday afternoon, (07.59GMT) from a location near Pukchang.

The office did not give further details, but Japan later confirmed it as a medium range ballistic missile test.

The White House said that it is aware of this latest North Korea missile launch and notes that this system has a shorter range than the missiles launched in North Koreas three most recent tests.

Japan has said that the country strongly protests North Korea and calls the missile launch intolerable and a clear violation of UN resolution.

The Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference that the missile was launched around 7:59 GMT from North Koreas west coast towards the Sea of Japan and it probably landed outside Japans exclusive economic zone, without causing damages to ships and aeroplanes.

A week ago,North Koreatested another missile, which it said was capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead.

North Korea has defied any calls to decrease its nuclear and missile programmes, even from its only ally, China.

Yesterday analysts revealed that Pyongyang has launched a ballistic missile, which has re-entered the Earths atmosphere.

North Korea see this as a significant breakthrough for the state.

Donald Trump has pledged to place stronger economic and diplomatic sanctions on the hermit kingdom as it scrambles to build nuclear weapons.

North Korea has announced that the US is within strike range.

On Saturday, North Koreas state KCNA news agency said: Today the U.S. mainland and the Pacific operational theatre are within the strike range of the DPRK and the DPRK has all kinds of powerful means for annihilating retaliatory strike.

Getty

The country regularly tests its short-range missiles and wants to develop ones that can reach the United States.

Last week, the UN Security Council again demanded that Pyongyang conduct no further such tests.

However all of North Koreas nuclear tests are in defiance of UN sanctions.

North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

The North defends its weapons programmes as necessary to counter US hostility.

And Kim Jong-un has made no secret of the fact that it is working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the US mainland and has ignored calls to rein in its nuclear and missile programmes, even from China, its lone major ally.

President Moon said: "The reality is that there is a high possibility of a military conflict at the NLL (Northern Limit Line) and military demarcation line.
