‘Being Human’: That Time of the Month

Posted: at 1:41 am

[This is a review ofBeing Humanseason 4, episode 2. There will be SPOILERS.]

-

In last weeks season premiere, the Being Human producers set the table for this season, casting Joshs future into the dark and doubtful while his friends tried to work through his perpetual wolfishness. For Sally, things seemed to be a bit too good after making her way out of day spa purgatory before they turned quite dark and Aidan seemed to be heading toward a fuller relationship with Kat while his long lost wife Susanna and the shuttered Boston vampire political machine re-emerged.

This week, the ball was kicked down the field a little as the focus remained on Josh and Noras heartbreaking dilemma while the mysteries surrounding Sallys newfound powers continued. As for Aidan, he finally got a chance to talk to Susanna as we found out her greatest secret.

About that return, it seems like that pill went down a little too easy for Aidan. Granted, producers have pulled this before (Henry), but despite all that Aidan has seen, we still should see some kind of perceivable shock on his face as he stands talking to a woman who he loved deeply and who he thought had passed away two centuries ago.

Her vamp turn at the hands of Bishop (a wonderfully evil, manipulative, and all-too-brief a return for Mark Pellegrino) way back then was predictable, but the fate of their son was not.

Susannas visually upsetting scene of self flagellation at the end of the episode also came as a bit of a surprise, but it may have shed some light on her motives. If (when) Aidan finds out about their son, one can expect him to react with anger. After that scene, we have every reason to wonder if that is what she is hoping for, though her answering the door with a stake in one hand certainly leads one to believe that someone or something may be after her.

Another thing that came out of Susannas appearance this week is that she will apparently not stand in the way of Aidans relationship with Kat until she inevitably does, of course. Thats a sad thing about this show all relationships seem doomed. Nora is a prime example of that and its her obvious frustration that drives the group to go to extreme measures to excise Josh from his wolf-body prison.

‘Sunanda died of drug overdose’

Posted: at 1:41 am

The preliminary post-mortem report of Sunanda Pushkar the wife of Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor who was found dead in a hotel room here last Friday has indicated that it was a case of drug overdose, police sources said.

The findings by a three-member-panel set up at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences were on Monday submitted to Sub-Divisional Magistrate Alok Sharma conducting an inquest into the sudden and unnatural death of Sunanda Pushkar.

Speaking to The Hindu after receiving the interim post-mortem report, Mr. Sharma said he was yet to go through the document. But, he said the inquest report would be submitted to the police by Tuesday.

AIIMS sources said that traces of chemicals found in her body indicated consumption of some anti-depressant and that there were nearly a dozen injuries on the body. The SDM would now wait for the toxicology report and other findings to ascertain if the overdose did lead to death.

Following the death, the police sources said they had recovered some empty strips of a prescription psychiatric medicine from the hotel in Delhis diplomatic enclave where the body was found.

Even as the post-mortem report established the reason behind the death, the inquest report would use it as well as the testimonies recorded before the magistrate and other circumstantial evidence to find out the circumstances under which the intake of the medicines had gone up beyond the prescribed levels.

Veteran journalist Nalini Singh, who spoke to Sunanda Pushkar a night before her death, has purportedly told the SDM that the latter sounded depressed over an alleged relationship between her husband and Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar.

The purported telephonic conversations between the two happened after a heated Twitter war between Sunanda Pushkar and Ms. Tarar.

Play about futurist, inventor R. Buckminster Fuller to open at San Jose Rep Theatre

Posted: at 1:40 am

The beauty of great ideas is that they never go out of style. Richard Buckminster ("Bucky") Fuller--futurist, inventor and many other egghead-y titles--was on constant boil with them. Consequently, this tireless thinker's observations on everything from technology to ecology remain as significant today as when he pronounced them during his life, which ended in 1983 at age 87.

"His ideas are frighteningly contemporary and relevant," says D.W. Jacobs, who wrote and directs a play titled R. Buckminster Fuller: The History (and Mystery) of the Universe. Opening Jan. 30 and running through Feb. 23, Jacobs' creation makes its bow at the San Jose Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo de San Antonio, San Jose. The one-man show stars Ron Campbell, who also introduced the role when Fuller had its world premiere at the San Diego Repertory Theatre, fittingly, in Y2K.

"I don't try to cover the range of his inventions. I wrote the play more about how he reinvented himself as a model for others to follow--to ask, 'Why am I here?' " Jacobs says. "It's a very 19th-century New England way of thinking. Each individual has a perspective on the universe that's a concept of democracy. There's collaboration, but each person has to own up to what he knows and what he can contribute to society."

Meanwhile, Campbell hasn't taken on the Bucky persona for almost a decade, which meant he "had to relearn it from the bottom up" for SJ Rep. No matter. A veteran of several one-man shows (among other film, TV and stage roles), the artist who once played the King of Clowns in Cirque du Soleil's Kooza is full of Fuller wisdom now.

"It's very interesting to be inside his mind for two hours," he says of a part that is "a Mount Everest climb every night." "Bucky was one of the few people on Earth for whom nothing was off topic. It's a joy to inhabit somebody who had that breadth of mind."

The actor finds it appropriate that Fuller at long last is being staged in Silicon Valley; it ran in San Francisco in 2000. "I would hope the people who are tech movers and shakers would see the show and then send their employees to see it. I think Bucky would be most pleased that the show is here."

Of Fuller's famous, never-ending lectures--in 1975 he expounded for a 42 hour series called Everything I Know--Campbell calls them "thinking out loud. It can go in any tangent because of his ravenous curiosity. That was another thing that attracted me to this role. He was childlike in the best sense of the word."

Fuller's life, however, did have its share of tragedies. His older daughter died from illness just before she turned 4, and he felt some responsibility for it. He also contemplated suicide following a host of other personal setbacks. But fate seemingly, literally, spoke to Bucky and set him on a wholly transformative path. It's a stimulating and thoughtful course that we all benefit from now.

Tickets are $29 to $74; all tickets for individuals 30 and under, as well as for full-time students, are 50 percent off the regular ticket price. Available at 408.367.7255, SJRep.com or at the box office at 101 Paseo de San Antonio in downtown San Jose.
