Irish band among NPRs top 25 albums of 2019 – IrishCentral

Dublin-based band Lankum was named on NPRs top 25 albums of the year.

The contemporary Irish folk group's album The Livelong Day came in at number 8 on the list.

This stunningly beautiful, trance-inducing album record draws heavily on traditional Irish folk music, but with a deep dark Dublin twist. The sound of drones play a central role in the overall tone of The Livelong Day, writes NPR.

Brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch, Radi Peat and Cormac MacDiarmada create crushing, apocalyptic, layered drones using Uilleann pipes, harmonium, fiddle, voice and more. It has the intensity of electronic music, but this is all acoustic musicin service of songs that are often centuries old.

"The opening track, "The Wild Rover," goes back at least to the 16th century and is often thought to be a drinking song, one you might raise your glass to at a pub, singing, "No, nay, never no more / Will I play the wild rover / No, never no more." But the original intent is that of a temperance song, and that's how Lankum approach it, with a sustained heaviness to match the story's consequence and building sense of regret. The Livelong Day makes the past entirely fresh and present."

"The Livelong Day" is the quartet's third album.

Originally known as Lynched, after the brothers surname, the group released their debut album "Cold Old Fire" in 2014. The quartet released their next album "Between the Earth and Sky" under their new name in 2017.

The name Lankum comes from the folk ballad "False Lankum," sung by Irish folk singer John Reilly.

The Space Brothers Discuss The Past, Present, and Future of Trance – EDM Identity

Posted: at 8:59 pm

The Space Brothers sat down with us at Dreamstate SoCal this year to chat about their role in the trance community, changes in the scene, and more!

From the early days of the dance music scene to this day, Ricky Simmons and Stephen Jones have been spinning trance, scorching dancefloors, and keeping the classic sound alive and well. Better known as The Space Brothers, this duo has truly become legends in the genre with huge tracks released over the years like Forgiven and Shine.

Helping form the genre into what its become today, theyve stayed consistent as the standard-bearers of the true trance sound while the rest of the scene has shifted and changed over the decades. Gracing the stage at major trance festivals like Luminosity Beach Festival and playing shows across the United Kingdom as well, their sets are revered for taking all who attend on a journey into the depths of the genre.

Most recently, The Space Brothers headed across the pond to play a stunner of a set at Dreamstate SoCal and luckily, we were able to catch up with this iconic duo. Read on to get the lowdown on this legendary duo as they give their insight on the scene and more.

Steve: Phenomenal! Obviously weve heard a lot about the festival and saw all of the footage but the experience is unbelievable. Such a warm and exciting crowd. Well be back next year if invited.

Ricky: Its nice to go back to those older records, around 1994-ish, that era, stuff that people have forgotten about. Its nice to go back to the stuff we used to hear when we went clubbing. We play alot of classic sets with tracks that have influenced our own current music

S: A lot of people resist playing old stuff but we still like playing that kind of thing dont we? To mix it up with current stuff is the best way to do it because otherwise, it can seem like youre playing a set from decades ago. But when you can mix it in with new remixes and reworks of what weve done in the past, it works.

R: Were lucky because we have quite a big catalog so loads of people are always remixing our stuff, and its nice to hear what other people are doing with our tracks. It really keeps things fresh.

Both: The internet. changed everything.

S: Not playing vinyl anymore, even though we did one recently. With these old fashioned, things called records. [Laughs]

R: And the old fashion thing called jeopardy that comes with playing records. [Laughs] In a nice way cause you feel like youre flying instead of playing with a remote-controlled toy with.

S: The thing that I was reminded of recently that most people wouldnt understand nowadays is when you could have a record that was quite hot and only two or three people would have the record for maybe months thats not a phenomenon that exists anymore where you can keep something a bit of a secret anymore. Its a shame we havent got that magic of having a track that can build for months where not everyones hearing it.

R: Once a DJ plays it and its out there on the internet everyone hears it.

R: More intimate clubs. You come to festivals like this and theyre amazing but more regular weekly clubs. I miss the fact that you could go to a club and thered be a residence DJs there and sorta the same crowd every week theres not much of that now, not in London anyway.

S: Yeah the number of clubs that have closed down in London even in the last five years let alone in the last 20 years is unbelievable. In the 90s when we were first kinda starting out, like I said, there were loads of clubs. So thats a shame, but thats what evolution and progression are all about things change.

S: It wasnt particularly the great club ever but we played at this club in Thailand called The Green Mango. We played it at the turn of the new Millennium.

R: It was on the beach, and the club after-

S: Nope, youve gotten that wrong, I remember because I had chosen the song when the clock struck twelve Wasnt a trance song by the way, it was All You Need Is Love by The Beatles.

R: South America. Id like to play in Argentina. Ive always heard people going on about the vibe there.

S: Buenos Aires is an amazing city, wed love to play there.

R: I listen to so many different things Jon Hopkins. Hes not new new, but every time I hear his new stuff its always completely nutty.

S: If were talking about non-trance, like non-dance music. A band Ive loved over the past few years is a band called Jungle, which is a weird band from England that has a sort of Earth Wind and Fire vibe, sorta funky, groovy music.

R: The mushrooms in Campania. [Laughs] I mean technically its a cuisine, right?

S: I think Thailand had the best food, I love Thai food.

S: Always help others, thats my message.

R: Thats what the trance family is about, sticking together and helping each other out theres something special about that.

Johan Gielen Talks Trance History and Gives Insight on Forthcoming Album – EDM Identity

Posted: at 8:59 pm

We sat down with trance producer Johan Gielen to dive deep into his history in the scene, get some insight on new music, and find out what makes him Mr. Trance Energy.

What happens when you literally helped define a genre of electronic music during its rise to stardom? How do you keep heading to new heights? If your name is Johan Gielen the answer is simple: never stop the climb. Whether it was his roots under the Airscape alias or is work famously under Svenson & Gielen, there was no stopping this elite trance talent. Luckily, Mr. Trance Energy himself celebrated the fifth anniversary of Dreamstate SoCal with all of Trance Family in attendance.

While getting ready to capture the hearts of the dreamers on the first day of the festival, Johan graciously carved out some time with us on a rare peek behind his creative curtains. We dove deep into what he planned to play that night, how trance festivals cater the experiences to their crowd, what production means to him today, and even got the scoop on some activities he plans to unveil in full next year.

So if you are ready to get into some Physical Overdrive, capture The Beauty of Silence, or just want to keep on Cruising to the trance beat, read on and discover the wonder of this history talent in the trance scene!

Its a pleasure, man. Im really looking forward to it. So no problem.

Well, I know Ive seen some previous editions on the internet and what I see is that the people are awesome. Theres a great atmosphere. The people are really up for the DJs and stuff so Im really looking forward to my set tonight and I saw already some people are reacting on the internet, Were coming to see you.

As you know, Ive been around for a couple of years now. For me, it started actually end of the 90s early 00s when I started to play Trance Energy. When I compare the parties from then and now, the thing is that the people didnt change in a sense of trance lovers. The only thing that has changed is, of course, the production and the equipment where youre working with. I remember humping around with record boxes. These days its easier, you get your music on a USB stick with you.

In a sense of music, trance has always been there. It developed a bit in different ways, but at the majority of all the parties then and now its actually the same because what DJs try to do is tell a story when they play. But looking back, for me it didnt change, I still do what I did back in the day. The music has changed a little bit since then. These days, I still play a lot of classics, but I also introduce some new stuff for the young generation.

So, the majority tonight I think it will be mainly the classics from back in the day because this is where Im known from. I think I can say that I was one of the first who started producing trance music and yeah, its good to bring the memories back even still today.

Oh, absolutely. Two years ago, I did a Svenson & Gielen Live Set and I also did a two-hour Trance Energy set, and yeah, still today people are talking about it. That was an incredible journey with all the people from around the world. I think tonight, specifically, I think its going to happen again.

Yeah, as I said, a majority of the parties are actually the same. The people are coming out to enjoy the trance music, to enjoy the DJ is the only thing but it has changed the productions, the equipment; its much much bigger right now.

I remember my first Trance Energy, there were no people with mobile phones or whatever. When we have a break and we want to have lights, they put the lighters up. Yeah, you know thats a little bit the difference now these days, everything is so developed with mobile phones and such.

Well, I think Trance Energy had been away for a while, but it came back at Tomorrowland and do even now for two years at Mysteryland in Holland; the last edition I played there as well. I see that theres still a majority of people who really liked the brand and really want to see it come back.

And I think what will happen right now with trance music, theres a big chance that this brand is going to be big again, you know? We still talking about some things behind the scenes and stuff, but there is a big chance that we were going to go full force again with them. As you said, you know, Mr. Trance Energy, I have that name because Im the only DJ who played it now together 18 times.

So yeah, thats why they call me that.

I think back in the days that Airscape ones and the Svenson & Gielen ones were really time setting for that time being. But seeing what happened afterward with new artists who get inspired in this kind of music we produce back in the days, thats still a good feeling and you see it happening all over and over again. Now these tracks are becoming like 20 years old now and I have a lot of people now from the new generation asking me, Can we do something? and stuff. So it might be possible that those tracks are coming back in 2020 with some new remixes, or in a new jacket or whatever.

Besides that, I decided three years ago when I was introducing the Trance Classics World Tour brand but I feel that my story is not complete right now. My last artist album was 2006. Ive got good news. I didnt bring it out yet, officially, but Im working behind the scenes on a new Johan Gielen artist album. What I want to do, there are two different things: bringing the original sound back where it all started and also give something to future producers so I can pass on some things. So Ive been in the studio with some young talent as well, I cant say the names yet, but thats whats going to happen I think 2020.

Yeah. Thats a follow up for that album.

Things are changing right now. I started back in 2000 with the Lift Off show on ID&T Radio. I did this prime time on Saturday night for three years, and then suddenly, Armin came in with A State of Trance and there was no space for me anymore. But hey, that was a really good opportunity for me to learn how to deal with radio shows.

Then Global Sessions came. It is also for a couple of years but I noticed that on a certain point, people were jumping over to Spotify. This is probably the reason why I started this Trance Favorites monthly. What I do every week are two updates on it. So all the new stuff, whats coming out; I what I think is really good for the future thats on the playlist and the playlist is still growing. I think this is a new way of expressing what you want to tell the people. Instead of the radio show, you do it on the Spotify playlist. I get good followers, Im nearly about 5,000 now.

Yeah, but Im very happy. Ive got a lot of responses from the listeners, but also from the record companies. They are sending me tracks and say, Hey Johan, this is a priority track, and then I listen. When I find a track is good, it doesnt matter if it is a major label or a small label or a small artist; when the music is good, its all about the music in my playlist.

In a certain way, its positive, in a certain way is negative. Because these days its very easy to produce. Back in the days when I started producing, 1992 was my first release, we were with five, six people on a big analog mixing table and we had all hardware. All the sounds from back in the days came all out of keyboards, real keyboards, and what developed the last couple of years you have a lot of stuff changes up.

And to a certain point, this is the negative thing, I think a lot of things are sounding the same. I feel that the youngsters are getting smarter and try to create original sounds, even with sound banks, but you can dump some sounds on each other and stuff. I think this is the development of new equipment. So everybody, when you have a little bit of knowledge about soft synths and everything, anyone can make music. But again, its really important that you put your own original feeling in it.

Yeah.

Well, Im doing some management at the moment already for some youngsters, but concerning the label, which we talked about before, everything has changed a little bit. If you want to run a label properly, it costs a lot of time and money. And for me, Im very busy right now with the album and touring, but the label is still there, so who knows, maybe next year! You know, never say never, but I, I still have the feeling that I am able to do something with it, but it depends also on the partner like a Black Hole or Armada or whatever. Right now, theres still nothing confirmed, but there are some talks behind the scenes. So well see what happens.

Exactly, exactly.

Yeah, I think where it all started, people started picking it up. It took a while but you know, I think in that area when we start producing trance music. There were a lot of people who missed that kind of music in the beginning. With the development of music, you had trance, you have EDM, but right now you feel that more people are jumping into trance. What I want to do actually with the Trance Classics concept is to make the people aware of where it actually came from.

So when I started producing in 1992 I started with new beat, and then afterward it became already some trance but on a different level. Then the Big Spot came 1999-2000 that is where the big tunes were born and everything. But bringing this back, its not only a memory, but its also to let people who were not involved with trance back in the days know where it all started. Thats actually my mission of doing the Trance Classics World Tour.

I always say without, theres theres no future without the past, you know, and I think this is a really good sentence. If you see what happens right now, this is going to happen again.

Well, it was a pleasure to do this interview and I really hope to see you somewhere around the world, in America or anywhere else. Thank you very much, everybody, for your continued support over the years, and hopefully, we can share this music and passion for the next couple of years again.

Youre welcome.

Menno de Jong to Hang Up the Headphones After 20 Years – EDM Identity

Posted: at 8:59 pm

After bringing trance to all corners of the globe for two decades, Menno de Jong has announced that hell be closing out his career as a DJ in September 2020.

As one of the most beloved artists in the trance scene, Menno de Jong has graced the stage at clubs and festivals around the world while releasing countless tunes over the past 20 years. Whether it was at In Trance We Trust showcases or performances at top tier festivals, he regularly won crowds over and gave fans plenty of memories along the way. Now, hes announced that this upcoming series of shows will be his final run as a DJ.

Taking to his platforms online earlier today to break the news to his loyal fanbase, Menno de Jong spoke about his growth as a person and the urgency to make a decision about his future factoring into the decision. He stated, Over time it has become clear to me that it is also an enormously taxing lifestyle that leaves limited room for personal growth, health and time with family and friends.

Additionally, his strong stance on helping save the planet also came into play in the decision, as the lifestyle of DJs typically involves a large usage of resources. In his message today he went on to say, Moreover, Im finding it increasingly hard to consolidate my environmental and animal rights beliefs with a profession that involves constantly jetting from one part of the world to another. These topics are something that have always been very close to my heart.

While were sad to see him hang up the headphones, Menno de Jong has announced that in 2020 hell be embarking on one last run of shows for his fans around the globe. His farewell tour will kick off in The Netherlands and United Kingdom before heading to Australia and Asia in March. From there hell head to Poland before spending May and June in North America and the remainder of summer in Europe.

Up until my last show I will be doing my very best to visit all the places I have performed at in the past one last time, so that we can have a proper goodbye, celebrate with the amazing music of the past two decades, and so that I can personally thank you for all your support I couldnt have done it without you and its been such a great ride.

On September 12, his final show, MennoSolo The Finale, will be hosted at Beachclub Fuel. It will surely be a show brimming with emotion and a fantastic way to close out his 20-year run.

Kevin & Perry’s 20th Anniversary Tribute Will Take Place At Amnesia – Broadway World

Posted: at 8:59 pm

In 2000 Kevin & Perry Go Large was released, a film which has since gone on to earn cult status amongst clubbers across the Globe largely for its soundtrack, humour, performances from Harry Enfield and Kathy Burke and its references to Ibiza's rave culture.

It's hard to believe that two decades have ticked by so how better to celebrate Kevin & Perry's 20th birthday than to go back to where it all happened, Amnesia Ibiza. On Monday 7th September we return to where the cult movie was filmed 20 years ago, showing the film on the LED screen, before an old school rave, using the DJ that originally performed during the actual filming, Seb Fontaine, and the curator of the iconic soundtrack, Judge Jules. Alongside these "fellow DJs' will be long standing Cream Ibiza resident DJ and worker favourite Sean Hughes, Amnesia's longest standing resident Les Schmitz and who will deliver a foam party during the closing set.

This one-off event will also mark the Closing party for Ibiza's premier Trance holiday 'Ibiza Trance Week' and the Opening party for the much-anticipated second instalment of 'One More Time Ibiza' so expect a crowd packed full of Trance & classic lovers, old school Ibiza faces and a vibe pulled straight from the 90's/early 00's with lasers, strobes and smoke machines!

Seb Fontaine - "Every time I watch it gives me goose-bumps. Working with them on the club scenes was fantastic and it was actually me djing with Kevin and Perry on fake decks. One of those nights you just never forget and I can't wait for the 20th Anniversary celebrations back at Amnesia Ibiza this summer."

Judge Jules - "What's astonished me about Kevin and Perry is that its appeal spans the generations. Each track from its soundtrack is familiar to everyone between the age of 13 and 50. Having been involved in the movie's soundtrack, and having been in Ibiza when it was filmed 20 years ago, I could never have imagined that K&P would have such enduring musical and cultural significance. There have been a number of films covering Ibiza club culture, but none has come close to Kevin and Perry, in terms of its everlasting popularity. Going back to where it all started for the 20th Anniversary in Amnesia will be a special occasion indeed."

Year By Year: Five Essential Albums of 1994 – JAZZIZ Magazine

Posted: at 8:59 pm

Jazz may not have an official yearbook, but it does have a vast and well-documented discography. Year by Year is our attempt to bring you the most noteworthy albums of each year, complete with audio samples and fascinating backstories. We hope you join us as we travel through the musics endlessly fascinating history, stopping every 12 months along the jazz timeline.

Aquatic was the third studio album by The Necks, the Australian experimental jazz trio made up of pianist Chris Abrahams, bassist Lloyd Swanton and drummer Tony Buick. By this time, the bands chemistry had matured and their penchant for sensuous minimalism had ensured them a growing cult following. Aquatic is split into two parts, each of which is fully improvised. Both parts are defined by hypnotic grooves. The atmosphere of the first part is peaceful while the second is slightly more agitated as if suggesting both the magic and dangers of deep-sea exploration. Steve Wisharts hurdy gurdy on the second track adds a welcome touch of psychedelia.

The Trance of Seven Colors documents the mindblowing meeting of the percussive Gnawa healing ceremonial music of southern Morocco and the free jazz improvisational genius of Pharaoh Sanders. The celebrated saxophonist traveled to the city of Essaouira with producer Bill Laswell to record with guembri master Maleem Mahmoud Ghania, one of the most celebrated Moroccan music artists of his time. Laswell brought with him only some simple digital recording equipment and the blowing date took place in the courtyard of a private house with a large ensemble mostly made up of Ghanias family members. The simplicity of the recording process makes The Trance of Seven Colors sound all the more authentic and transportative.

Patricia Barber sings and plays piano alongside her quartet, and straddles the line between sophisticated pop and atmospheric jazz on Caf Blue, her debut album for Premonition. The record is chock-full of ideas, complete with touches of avant-garde, minimalism and folk, recalling at times the music of Joni Mitchell. Yet, its power lies in its restraint and deep sensibilities, evoking images of smoky hipster bars full of mysterious, dark corners. The tracklist is made up of Barbers intelligent originals plus unique takes on well-worn standards. Mourning Glow even finds her putting a Maya Angelou poem of the same name to music.

Jamiroquais sophomore album, The Return of the Space Cowboy, closely followed the success of their debut, Emergency on Planet Earth. Here, they offered the same exciting mix of acid jazz and funk, supported by stellar musicianship and the recognizable vocals of Jay Kay, influenced by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone. The songs were even stronger Space Cowboy and High Times became huge hits and continued Jamiroquais upward spiral into international stardom (the former song was even one of the major inspirations for the anime sci-fi Cowboy Bebop.) Jamiroquais was music that you could dance to but they were more than a party band and continued to deal with delicate social and environmental themes in their lyrics.

The London Jazz Composers Orchestra (LJCO) was not only bandleader/bassist Barry Guys vehicle for the expression of his interest in both free improvisation and formal composition. It was also a major 17-piece ensemble including some of the finest musicians of the British jazz and improvised music scene of the time. Portraits is arguably the Orchestras most representative recording. Each of the extended pieces on this double album is composed by Guy and explores the tension and potential of a large scale free jazz orchestra. Each is also followed by a shorter subset, designed to highlight the talents of individual players or small sections of the LJCO.

Honorable mentions: Jeanne Lee & Mal Waldron, After Hours (Owl); Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem & Shaukat Hussain Khan, Madar (ECM); The Beau Hunks, The Beau Hunks Play the Original Little Rascals Music (KOCH Screen); Joshua Redman Quartet, Moodswing (Warner Bros.); Michel Camilo, One More Time (Columbia).

When is ‘Riverdale’ coming back after the midseason’s daunting cliffhanger? – MEAWW

Posted: at 8:59 pm

This article contains spoilers for 'Riverdale' Season 1 to Season 4

After the midseason finale 'Tangerine' on December 11, we can't wait for 'Riverdale' to divulge the information we so desperately need. We were rooting for BugHead, but one half of the most shipped investigative couple might be dead. The flash-forwards claim that Jughead Jones has died, while the last episode put the spotlight on Dark Betty as the murderer. CW is yet to release an official date as to when the drama series will return, but we speculate that it would return on January 2, 2020.

Until then, let's recap on where the show left off and how much we can speculate about the rest of Season 4.

Veronica is still keen on fighting Hiram Lodge, she got her Abuelita in town for backup. We don't know if Dodger is really gone but in true Riverdale fashion, the crew might come back for revenge. Hiram is back home, invited by a delusional Hermoine, setting Veronica into a rage - what does the mobster have planned now? He's already taken up most of Riverdale instilling fear even in the highest of public figures, but Hiram always has a plan, does it involve his love child Hermosa and the rum business? Will he plan to take down Veronica with the rum business, we're hoping Veronica one-ups him but who knows.

Archie and FP settled their score with Dodger, beating him to a pulp leaving Archie in a torn state. He realizes that he might not be over the death of his father, and confides in his mother about not knowing what to do. Although we're rooting for Archie, the man got attacked by a bear in his quest to leave behind the shadows of his town, so we're sure he has more troubles coming his way.

Cheryl made peace with the loss of Jason, giving him a proper goodbye on Sweetwater River. She also put her mother Penelope on trial for all the murders and attempted murders of the Blossom family and her friends. Penelope is now in the infamous bunker with walls that have seen too many secrets. Is Cheryl planning on killing Penelope or having her starve down there - we're not too sure. The red-lipped Vixen has her ways though and Penelope has taken too many lives so being in a bunker doesn't seem like an appropriate punishment.

Betty figured out that the reason Polly and Alice were in a trance - it was because Evelyn was calling them and repeating the word 'Tangerine' resulting in them being hypnotized. They then turn into Betty, wanting to kill Dark Betty which is why Alice was about to stab Betty when in a trance and Polly attacked a nurse named Betty. Her brother Charles, who we find out is dating Chic, has something up his sleeve, but has slowly been trapping Betty in the whole sentimental lost-brother-is back thing, but the show hasn't hinted at why. Charles was recently bought into the season and his FBI status has been able to clear a few messes, but he might bring a lot more than anticipated to the Cooper family.

Jughead found his grandfather and learned the truth about him being the author of the first Baxter Brothers novel which means he was wrong about Mr. Dupont stealing credit for being the author. His grandfather sold the copy to Dupont legally. Jughead also then gets inducted to the Quill and Skull society by his literary group colleagues.

Now, for the cliffhanger - the season so far has been teasing the death of Jughead Jones with scenes of Betty holding bloodied stones near Jughead's body and her, Archie and Veronica standing in a lineup where Donna says she saw them kill Jughead. We're speculating that Betty, who wanted to kill the dark side of herself, might still be in a trance that had her kill Jughead or that Jughead is faking his death to get to the crux of what the secret Quill and Skull society is all about. Either way, it looks like Jughead is dead, but how and why? We have to wait and watch the fates of each character unfold, but we're sure of one thing, more people are going to die because then Riverdale wouldn't be 'Riverdale'.

Consider trippy music and, as you light that joss stick, it might bring to mind long-haired, bearded men in tunics bent over guitars. Or trance, with its fluffy boots and angel wings, in a desert. But Teneil Throssell, AKA Haai, has a knack for searching out hypnotic sounds and blending them together without it ever feeling forced, mining the psychedelic end of Middle Eastern rave one minute and African drumming the next.

Throssell moved to London from Australia to make a go of her rock band but, when they split, she quickly became a superstar spinner in the ascendant. She was discovered playing Turkish oddities at a small Dalston bar in 2016, given a residency at Brixton nightclub Phonox and hasnt looked back since. Her wide-ranging sets go from techno to attitudinal body music, brash Eurodance and even Bruce Springsteen, a dynamite combination that led to her winning the Radio 1 essential mix of the year 2018.

The music Throssell makes herself is darker. Last month she released her first EP on Mute, Systems Up, Windows Down a bolshy collection of vibrant face-melters, taking in big-room breaks, shards of trance, playful samples inspired by her travels and punishing beats that could crack bones under a strobe light at 6am. Snobs have bemoaned her supposed lack of cohesion but while its easy to blag conformity, you cant fake personality and Throssells tracks have tons of it. A debut album and a huge 2020 await.
