Ohio University is working to propagate pronouns and preferred names in as many technology platforms as possible in the next year. That includes allowing students seeking to change their pronouns to do so without being asked for their preferred pronouns.

We have seen greater and greater diversity of gender expression at Ohio University and throughout the nation, LGBT Center Director Micah McCarey said. And the goal is to get people to respect personal use of pronouns as more than a preference.

The LGBT Center, the Office of the University Registrar and the Office of Information Technology (OIT) have all been key offices in supporting this change and offering ways for students to be their authentic selves

We are committed to supporting pronoun and preferred name initiatives, including safeguarding personal information and ensuring names and pronouns are correctly displayed in University systems, said Chief Information Officer Chris Ament.

One change includes removing preferred from the pronouns label in the MyOHIO Student Center. University Registrar Debra Benton said her office was happy to work with OIT to make that change.

Our students are fortunate to have Micah McCarey leading the LGBT Center and promoting respect for personal pronouns, Benton added.

Cody Huebner, a graduate assistant for the Housing Ambassador Program with Housing and Residence Life who identifies as queer, has a passion for advocating for operational equity for students. Recognizing the discrepancy between using the phrasing preferred before a persons pronouns, Cody recently reached out to the LGBT Center to inquire about the possibility of officially updating pronoun terminology.

Even though it may seem small, this subtle distinction between someones preference of pronouns and simply what pronouns they utilize can mean the difference between a student (or staff member) feeling like they belong, and Im delighted to be a part of this initiative, Huebner said.

In 2015, OHIO implemented a policy that allowed students to be identified with the name and/or pronoun they use. This included updating the MyOHIO Student Center so that students could update their name and pronouns, as well as modifying other systems so faculty could access that information. Ohio University was one of the first universities in the state to take this step.

We live in a society where we tend to make assumptions about what pronouns a person uses based on their appearance, McCarey said.However, the pronoun policy allowed students to share their names and/or pronouns and have make it possible for instructors to include that information on their class rosters.

OHIO students, faculty, and staff can learn more about updating pronouns and names on theStudent Names FAQ page. Anyone who notices a system displaying pronouns or names incorrectly should contact the IT Service Deskto resolve the issue.

There's a $1 Billion-Plus Technology Deal Announced Every Two Days - Bloomberg

IT consultings services company Intact Technology will invest $700,000 to expand its Reston, Virginia, headquarters and create more than 40 new jobs.

IT consultings services company Intact Technology will invest $700,000 to expand its Reston, Virginia, headquarters and create more than 40 new jobs.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority announced the expansion Tuesday.

Intact Technology, founded in 1994, relocated its headquarters from Greenbelt, Maryland, to 12700 Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston in 2020.

As part of its expansion, it will receive incentives from the Virginia Jobs Investment Program and is eligible to receive $800 for each new job it creates, up to 41. The company will not receive the money until new hires have been on the companys payroll for at least 90 days.

Intact Technology currently has roughly 80 employees. It has hired 24 new employees so far this year and has 25 open positions, according to company spokeswoman Emily Cook. Openings include managing directors, project management and consulting.

Customers for Intact Technologys software consulting and managed services include Fortune 100 companies and the federal government, including GSA and the IRS.

Reston tech firm Intact Technology expands headquarters and jobs - WTOP

According to the recent House of Commons report on the UKs pandemic response, one of the governments key failings was to assume that the success of countries like South Korea in controlling the virus couldnt be replicated in Britain. This decision to ignore approaches that were proving successful elsewhere was one of the UKs biggest oversights early in the pandemic.

However, the report itself falls into a similar trap. It regards South Koreas pandemic response as exceptional due to its advanced use of digital technology, ignoring the fact that the country also relied a lot on old-fashioned social interventions contact tracing, quarantine and isolating cases aided by boots on the ground.

To combat COVID and future pandemics, governments need to heed the lessons of these social interventions and not just the technological ones. South Korea teaches us that high-tech solutions can help protect against disease, but these work together with social interventions interventions that the UK has not used as effectively.

The UK government had the ambition of creating a world-beating test-trace-isolate system. Yet the House of Commons report concludes that Englands system has produced little effect, despite great expense. Other countries too have not been able to contain COVID sufficiently without resorting to draconian lockdowns. However, South Korea has been regularly cited as an exception.

While South Korea has had to introduce some control measures to limit the spread of the virus there have been curfews for businesses and limits on the size of gatherings in 2021 it has avoided full lockdowns and border closures while keeping cumulative confirmed COVID cases relatively low. Its worth remembering that South Korea is one of the worlds most densely populated large countries.

Key to this has been quarantine measures for travellers arriving in the country, which were introduced very swiftly, and the countrys highly effective test-trace-isolate system. This carefully designed process provides local support for those in isolation, while monitoring them and sanctioning non-compliance.

Yes, mobile phone data and other forms of surveillance have been used to trace people who might have the virus. But once a positive case is confirmed, it is human intervention that ensures those people dont spread the virus further.

A case officer from the local council is assigned to work with affected households. They communicate with infected people throughout the self-isolation period. After initially making contact over the phone to inform people of the need to self-isolate and the guidelines to follow, case officers then deliver a stay-at-home kit as discreetly as possible to protect the persons privacy.

This local council-funded kit contains essentials that prevent the person from needing to go out. They receive food, drink, bin liners, a thermometer for monitoring their condition, and face masks and hand sanitiser to help prevent further infection. Kits can also be tailored, for instance, to include certain foods or medications and even pet food.

The case officer is the infected persons primary point of contact, providing advice and support over the 14 days of self-isolation. Again, technology plays a role here. A smartphone app can be used by the case officer to monitor the persons self-reported symptoms and to make sure (via GPS) they arent breaking quarantine. But its influence shouldnt be overstated. The app is mandatory, but those who dont own a smartphone are still able to get support via phone calls and text messages.

People self-isolating can contact their case worker when extra support is needed, for instance, with urgent daily business such as banking or pet care. Because the relationship works both ways, this encourages compliance through the creation of a social bond. The comprehensive and individualised support given to those isolating primarily ensures compliance by removing barriers rather than punishing infractions.

The need to address the loss of income that self-isolating people face was also identified early on, with modest payments of up to $US374 (270) made easily available.

The effectiveness of these interventions is clear: published data suggests non-compliance with self-isolation rules has been extremely low in South Korea throughout the pandemic. Those who do break the rules risk losing the financial support that the government provides.

Not breaking the rules has also been encouraged as a social norm through daily reporting in the media on the number of people not adhering to isolation. Generally, this is no more than four people a day in a country of 55 million.

The South Korean experience reveals just how effective locally delivered and individually tailored self-isolation systems can be. But rather than seeking to replicate South Korean success, politicians, experts and the media in the west have repeatedly suggested that this performance is based on intrusive data-surveillance techniques enabled by a compliant national culture that cannot be replicated in their countries.

The House of Commons report suggests that if the UK were to try to emulate South Korea, the lessons to be learned concern the use of high-tech surveillance systems and comprehensive digital contact tracing. This misses out many of the core elements of South Koreas pandemic response that help make sure people isolate and quarantine as needed.

Focusing on technologies to adopt in the future ignores the more immediately transferable lessons on how to break chains of infection in a fast-moving pandemic. It is about time we acknowledged that comprehensive, shoe-leather public health systems should be the bedrock of containing current and future disease outbreaks. Much of what has worked in South Korea is exceptional only in that other countries such as the UK have made no effort to replicate it.

Its known as an iEXCEL Wall, and it gets medical students excited in addition to helping them to learn.

For rural areas, it helps to level the playing field so that medical campuses like Northeast Community College can keep up with the latest advances in health care technology.

On Wednesday, University of Nebraska Medical Center Chancellor Jeffrey Gold visited Norfolk and the downtown and met community leaders.

His final stop was Northeast Community Colleges McIntosh College of Nursing, which features an iWall that links the University of Nebraska Medical Centers five nursing campuses so the latest technology can be shared during lessons and projects simultaneously.

Sen. Mike Flood of Norfolk, who helped to arrange for Dr. Golds visit, said there are few nursing colleges in Nebraska that have access to this type of technology.

As we know, this is the future of medicine and the future of our area, Flood said.

Dr. Gold, Nicole Carritt, UNMCs director of rural initiatives, and Bob Bartee, UNMCs vice chancellor of external relations, met with Norfolk community leaders and other Northeast Nebraska stakeholders about common priorities, such as health education, health workforce shortages and economic development, that UNMC and Norfolk city, business and community leaders can work together to address.

They also will meet with leaders of Northeast Community College to discuss collaborative efforts between UNMC and Northeast, including a new radiology partnership that will begin in fall 2022.

This is a big day for Norfolk, Flood said. We have been talking about different ways to grow our communities, especially here in Northeast Nebraska.

Gold said he is not aware of any other medical system in the United States or the world where the entire educational system is linked through high bandwidth capability so that students, faculty and staff can work together in real time.

They can view real patient images and work on problems at the same time, study together, learn together and hopefully practice together, he said.

Gold, who also is a surgeon and medical educator, said he is always impressed when he comes to Northeast Nebraska with the cohesiveness of the region. One of the things he always asks is what he can do for the community.

The answer is always the same three things, Gold said. Its workforce, workforce and workforce. And if youre not listening, its more workforce.

Gold said UNMC already has established strong partnerships with Northeast Nebraska and in rural areas through scholarships, Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) and the Northeast Nursing College.

So what does it take to get someone to live in Norfolk or a community that doesnt have as many offerings as a metro area?

Gold said it takes creating great jobs, working with fabulous people and offering a great place for people to raise their families. Then it depends on things like what people can do for entertainment, such as the arts, music and athletics, he said.

Among the more than 15 people taking part in at least part of the tour were Dr. Marysz Rames, president of Wayne State College, and Connie Rupp, chief nursing officer at Faith Regional Health Services.
