UFC Vegas 38 Odds, Picks and Betting Preview Thiago Santos vs Johnny Walker – Sports Betting Dime

Posted: September 27, 2021 at 5:20 pm

Thiago Santos takes on Johnny Walker in the main event of UFC Vegas 38 in Las Vegas. Can Santos take down Walker as the favorite?

After being in front of a sold-out crowd at the T-Mobile Arena last weekend, the UFC returns to the UFC Apex in Las Vegas for UFC Vegas 38 on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021. In the main event, light heavyweights collide as Thiago Santos looks to snap his losing streak as he battles flashy striker Johnny Walker. Santos is narrowly favored at -170 to beat Walker in the UFC Vegas 38 odds.

UFC Vegas 38 airs live on ESPN+ with the main card at 7 PM EST. The table below shows odds for the main card at DraftKings followed by best bets.

Make sure to check out the latest sportsbook promos before placing your bets for UFC Vegas 38.

All odds as of Sept. 27 at DraftKings

Thiago Santos enters this fight on a three-fight losing streak, but he has been fighting elite-level competition, including taking Jon Jones to a split decision for the belt. Against Jones, he tore both his knees, which kept him out for over a year, and after that, he lost to Glover Teixeira and Aleksandar Rakic. Johnny Walker, meanwhile, has all the hype in the world, and if he can beat Santos, hed be right there for a title shot.

When Walker was fighting Anderson, he had all the hype in the world, and many were talking about him giving Jon Jones trouble. Yet, Anderson showed the Brazilian doesnt have the best chin, and Krylov exposed his wrestling as he held the Brazilian down for 15 minutes. Even in his win, Spann dropped and hurt Walker a few times, which is a concern against a heavy hitter in Santos.

Although Santos is on a three-fight losing streak, he did nearly KO Teixeira, and against Jones, he had some success. Prior to the setbacks, though, he showed off his KO power but finishing the now-champ in Blachowicz, Jimi Manuwa, and Eryk Anders.

Thiago Santos is a former middleweight who has since moved up and has become a full-size light heavyweight. The Brazilian has legit one-punch KO power as at middleweight he even holds stoppage wins over Jack Hermansson and Anthony Smith.

Early on, I expect Walker to come out aggressive and look for the KO shot. Santos, meanwhile, will be patient and use his leg kicks and jab to try and find his range to land the KO shot. I do expect Walker to have some moments in the first round and win it. However, in the second round, Santos will start to become the aggressor and catch Walker with a big shot. I expect Santos to finish him with ground and pound to win by TKO. Santos to win inside the distance by KO or TKO will have much better value than his moneyline odds at UFC Vegas 38.

Pick: Thiago Santos (-170)

Kevin Holland was the star of 2020 going 5-0 but in 2021, he was outwrestled by Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori showing a big hole in his game in his takedown defense and his jiu-jitsu off his back. Now, he faces an unranked fighter in Daukaus who could be fighting for his UFC job.

The first couple minutes of this fight should be able to tell you how it will go. Theres no question Daukaus will shoot for a takedown early, and if he gets it and Holland cant get off his back, it will be another loss for Holland due to his wrestling. Yet, if he does stuff it, he is the better striker and will be able to piece up Daukaus on the feet.

Ultimately, I dont think Hollands takedown defense has improved enough to stop the takedowns of Daukaus. I expect Daukaus to shoot for the legs early and often to control the fight and win a decision.

Pick: Kyle Daukaus (+130)

How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips to Know | The …

Posted: September 24, 2021 at 11:29 am

Over the past few years, sports betting has emerged from the shadows and into the mainstream. The anti-gambling stigma that existed for decades faded quickly in American popular culture, opening the door for a massive, multibillion-dollar legal sports betting industry to emerge.

With sports betting now legal in many states, millions of sports fans will be looking to enter the betting market for the first time. But where do you begin if youre unfamiliar with the terminology?

Heres an introduction into how to bet on sports. Well be adding to this series in the coming weeks.

Use the links below to jump to each section.

When oddsmakers release a betting line on a game, the first thing they do is decide which team should be the favorite and which should be the underdog.

The favorite is the team that is expected to win the game and will get a minus sign next to its odds, while the underdog is expected to lose and gets a plus sign. If the game is a toss-up, books will open it as a pick or pickem.Click to return to table of contents.

There are two main ways to bet on a favorite or an underdog. The first is the point spread, which is a bet on the margin of victory.

For example, say the Patriots are 7-point favorites against the Jets. Theyd be listed at -7.

If you bet on the Patriots, they need to win the game by 8 points or more for you to win your bet. If the Patriots win by 8 points or more, you cover. If the Patriots win by exactly 7 points, that is called a push, which means you get back the money you originally bet.

If the Patriots win by 6 points or fewer (or lose the game straight-up), you lose your bet.

On the flip side, if you bet on the Jets plus the points (+7), you need the Jets to either win the game lose by six points or fewer for you to win (or cover) your bet.

Spreads are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on higher-scoring sports like football and basketball.

Click to return to table of contents.

The second way to bet on a favorite or an underdog is on the moneyline. This is based solely on which team will win the game, and uses American odds to calculate the payout.

Favorites are again given a minus designation, such as -150, -200 or -500. If a favorite is -200, that means you have to risk $200 to win $100. If the favorite wins, you get $100, but if the favorite loses, youre out $200.

Because favorites are expected to win, you assume more risk when betting on them.

Underdogs are given a plus designation, such as +150, +200 or +500. If an underdog is +200, that means if you bet $100 on them and they win the game, you get $200. If they lose the game, you lose only the $100 that you risked. Because underdogs are expected to lose, there is more of a reward when betting on them.

Moneylines are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on lower-scoring sports like baseball, hockey and soccer.

Click to return to table of contents.

In addition to setting a line for the favorite and the underdog, oddsmakers will also set a total number of points scored in a game by both teams combined. This is called the total or over/under.

Bettors can then wager on whether or not the game will go Over or Under the total.

For example, an NBA game between the Celtics and Bulls might have a total of 215. You could either bet the Over 215 or the Under 215. If you bet the Over 215 and the total points scored end up being 216 or higher, you win your bet. If the total points scored are 214 or fewer, you lose.

Click to return to table of contents.

The oddsmakers put a tax on every bet, which is typically called the juice or vig (short for vigorish). The juice is the commission you have to pay to the sportsbook for them to accept your wager.

The vig in the U.S. will be listed in American odds

Say the Duke Blue Devils are -5 (-110) that means if you want to bet on Duke as a 5-point favorite, you need to risk $110 to win $100.

The juice can also be a positive number, such as Penn State -7 (+110). That means if you bet $100 on Penn State as a 7-point favorite and it covers, you win $110. If it loses, you lose only the $100 that you risked.

You always have to risk more on a favorite than youd win on an underdogotherwise, sportsbooks would be out of business.

With legalized sports betting spreading across America, sports bettors have never had more options to take advantage of. To see if sports betting is legal where you live, check out our state-by-state tracker.

Some of the biggest states that have legalized mobile wagering include Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana and West Virginia. The sportsbooks highlighted below are all trustworthy legal shops that take bets online.

In the end, you have the final say on how much to risk on a game, but a good rule is risk only what you can afford to lose. Sports betting is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be good days and bad days. As a result, we recommend a flat-betting approach.

This means betting the same amount on every game and risking only 1% to 5% of your bankroll per play (the bankroll is the starting amount you have at your disposal to bet with). For example, if you are starting with a bankroll of $100, you should risk no more than $5 per game.

By employing a flat-betting approach, bettors guard themselves against losing their entire bankroll during a bad stretch, but also set themselves up for a positive return on investment (ROI) when theyre doing well.

Rotation numbers are whats listed to the left of a team on the board. They are also referred to as the NSS number or Vegas ID number. They are unique to the team, sport and league, and universal across most sportsbooks.

For example, you might see the number 312 listed next to the Bruins -120. If youre at a casino and want to bet $100 on the Bruins, walk up to the window with your money and say, $100 on 312, Bruins -120.

Much like stocks on Wall Street, the sports betting market is fluid. Throughout the day, bookmakers will adjust the odds depending on the action theyre taking and other news, such as injuries and weather. For example, if the Vikings open as 7-point favorites and the vast majority of bets are on the Vikings, you might see the Vikings line move from -7 to -7.5. The line could move even further to -8, or it could be bought back to -7.

You can monitor betting data for every game in real time on our live odds page or in our mobile app (download here).

Click to return to table of contents.

Lines can vary based on the sportsbook, because different books have different clienteles. As a result, one book may post the Cavs -8 while another has -7.5. Having access to more than one sportsbook allows you to shop for the best line. Getting an extra half-point might not seem like a huge deal, but it adds up over the long haul and increases your chances of winning.

Our live odds pages will automatically surface the best line for every game.

This isnt Monopoly money, so you want to make sure youre tracking your progress. The easiest way to do that is withour award-winning (and free!) app, which has awesome features like live bet cover probability and odds shopping, it also lets you track all of your bets across nearly every sport.

And thats valuable because you can identify where your strengths and weaknesses are as you start betting. Are you more successful betting on the NFL or NBA? Do you thrive when taking player props or over/unders? These are all a good thing to know, and it can allow you to maximize your winnings.

Wanna bet? Here’s where all 50 states stand on … – CBS Sports

Posted: at 11:29 am

It has been over a year-and-a-half since the United States Supreme Court delivered a landmark decision to strike down the federal ban on sports gambling that prohibited betting on sports in most states. Since that ruling, which left the legality of sports gambling up to state-level government, several states swiftly moved to legalize sports betting.

Prior to the Supreme Court ruling, Nevada was the only state in which a bettor could wager on the results of a game. But since the federal ban was lifted last May, many states have fully legalized sports gambling, with several more in the process of doing so. Many others are introducing new legislation proposals that would open the door to sportsbooks.

Here's a state-by-state examination of where the country stands on sports gambling. And remember, if you live in a state where sports gambling is legal, check out SportsLine for expert predictions.

Alabama: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

A proposed bill was introduced this April that would create an Alabama Sports Wagering Commission to oversee the regulation of sports betting in the state. Under the proposed bill, bettors would be able to gamble on pro and college sports.

Alaska: Not legal.

In 2020, the state put legalizing sports betting under consideration.

Arizona: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

A bill proposed in January would exclusively permit federally recognized Native American tribes with a gaming license to operate sportsbooks within the state.

Arkansas: Legal.

The state's first official sportsbook (Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort) began operating in July, and there will be multiple others on the way, though the state is still prohibiting mobile online wagering.

California: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

There's currently a proposed constitutional amendment and a pending voter referendum that could make sports gambling legal in the near future.

Colorado: Legal.

Colorado became the 19th state to legalize betting and as of May 1, 2020 multiple operators allowed residents to open accounts online and place wagers.

In the 2020 election, Colorado expanded both the number and type of casino games it is able to offer. The state also eliminated some wagering limits.

Connecticut: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Earlier this year, lawmakers pushed forward two separate sports betting bills -- one that would allow sports gambling state-wide at casinos, the lottery and off-track betting sites, and a second that would limit sports betting to the federally recognized tribes that operate the state's two casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

Delaware: Legal.

Less than a month after the Supreme Court's decision, Delaware moved to fully legalize sports betting. Three casinos began operating sportsbooks in June and the state is looking to add additional locations as well as mobile betting.

Florida: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Florida Man is not allowed to legally gamble in-state. Three bills filed in November 2019 aim to get movement rolling on the legalization of in-state wagering.

Georgia: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Proposed legislation filed in early 2019 would allow for sports betting on pro and college sports, but with no more than 10 sports gambling licenses handed out in the state.

Hawaii: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

A bill proposed in January of 2019 would allow for the regulation of sports gambling through a newly-established corporation.

Idaho: Not legal.

No legislation proposed.

Illinois: Legal.

Legislation was passed in June to allow sports gambling, though in-state collegiate games will be off-limits under the new law. It will make gambling lawful in a variety of locations both in-person (including at Wrigley Field) and online. Bets were allowed in the state as of March 9, 2020.

Indiana:Legal.

Wagering on pro and college sports became legal in September of 2019 with both mobile and in-person betting permitted at multiple locations.

Iowa: Legal.

Iowa legalized sports gambling in 2019, with multiple sites beginning to take bets at the end of that summer. State law allows for betting on both pro and college sports.

Kansas: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

A total of five sports betting bills have been proposed in the Kansas legislature, but none currently have a hearing date set.

Kentucky: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Kentucky has had multiple sports gambling bills proposed but likely won't see any movement until at least 2020.

Louisiana: Approved sports betting

Louisiana approved sports betting in the 2020 election.

Maine: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Maine nearly passed a law that would have allowed in-person and mobile sports betting on pro and college sports (with the exception of in-state colleges), but the bill was vetoed by the state's governor. The state's legislature will likely look to get an identical or similar version passed in 2021.

Maryland: Approved sports betting

Following results of the 2020 election, Maryland approved sports betting.

Massachusetts:Not legal, but legislation proposed.

A number of sports betting legalization bills were introduced in 2019, including one from the governor that would allow residents anywhere in the state to place mobile sports wagers (not tied to land-based casinos) or bet in-person at two newly opened in-state casinos. If passed, the state could see legalized betting as early as 2020.

Michigan:Legal.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed bills in late 2019that allow for both sports betting and online gaming in the state. Casinos in the state started taking wagers in March of 2020.

Minnesota:Not legal, but legislation proposed.

In 2019, a bill was proposed that would have legalized sports gambling at the state's two horse-racing tracks, its 21 tribal casinos and potentially through mobile devices. That bill did not pass during that legislative session.

Mississippi: Legal.

The first sports bets in Mississippi were placed on August 1, 2018. The state enacted a law in 2017 that allowed for sports betting.

Missouri:Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Missouri had several sports betting bills introduced this year but the state hasn't taken action on them yet.

Montana:Legal.

Legal sports betting arrived in the state as of March 2020. Sportsbooks will be regulated through the state lottery.

Nebraska: Authorized some betting

In the 2020 election, Nebraska authorized adding casino games at its horse racing tracks. Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Columbus and South Sioux City will allow casino games at racetracks.

In early 2020, state senator Justin Wayne introduced a bill classifying sports betting as "authorized games of skill" and would allow sports wagering, fantasy sports, and poker in Nebraska.

Nevada: Legal.

Obviously.

New Hampshire: Legal.

New Hampshire joined the list of states with legalized sports betting on the second day of 2020. The state agreed to a six-year contract with DraftKings, so mobile sportsbooks can be utilized throughout the state.

New Jersey: Legal.

New Jersey long advocated for legalized sports gambling and was responsible for the case that led to the federal reversal from the Supreme Court. As such, they wasted no time in legalizing sports gambling after the decision, opening the state's first sportsbooks on June 14, 2018. Atlantic City and the Giants/Jets NFL stadium, among other locations, now offer legalized sports wagering.

New Mexico: Legal, kind of.

New Mexico's case is rather unique, as the state hasn't passed legislation specifically allowing sports betting, but it's possible to legally bet in-state thanks to a loophole. Under the current state laws, sports betting isn't explicitly prohibited, nor is it a prohibited Class III game in the gaming compacts shared between tribes and the state. This has allowed the Pueblo of Santa Ana tribe to open their own not-outright-legal-but-also-not-technically-illegal sportsbook at its in-state casino.

New York: Legal.

New York actually passed a bill in 2013 that made sports gambling legal at the state level, but the state didn't open its first official sportsbook until July of 2019. As of now, a majority of the legal sports wagering comes via upstate casinos, but online is expected soon.

At some point after July 31, 2021, mobile and online wagering platforms are expected to arrive, as legislators approved a bill allowing for this type of betting.

North Carolina: Legal, but not yet started.

Gambling in North Carolina is run exclusively through the Cherokee tribe, and the state passed a bill in July of 2019 that will permit sports gambling (including horse racing) to be part of that monopoly. As it stands, sports bets will only be accepted in-person at the tribe's two casinos, both of which would like to start taking bets n 2020.

North Dakota:Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Lawmakers emphatically rejected a bill to legalize professional and collegiate sports betting in 2019.

Ohio:Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Legislation has been proposed in Ohio but lawmakers are at odds over the regulation and oversight of sports gambling. It's not close at the moment.

Oklahoma:Not legal, but legislation proposed.

A proposed bill would expand the tribal-state gaming compact to include sports betting, but no action has been taken yet.

Oregon: Legal.

Oregon didn't need to pass new legislation because they already had limited sports betting legality established at the state level, but they didn't officially start taking bets until August of 2019.

Pennsylvania: Legal.

Six months after the Supreme Court reversal, Pennsylvania took its first legal sports bet at a casino sportsbook in 2018. Additional licenses have since been handed out and mobile/online wagering is also accepted in-state.

Rhode Island: Legal.

Rhode Island also opened its first sportsbook six months after the U.S Supreme Court's decision and currently offers sports gambling exclusively at two in-state casinos, but online/mobile betting is on its way.

South Carolina: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Gambling in South Carolina is restricted solely to casino riverboats but state legislature has proposed bills in consecutive years that would open the door to sports gambling. No action has been taken yet.

South Dakota:In the 2020 election, South Dakota approved sports betting.

Tennessee: Legal, to lauch soon.

The Tennessee state legislature approved a sports betting bill in the spring of 2019 that will only allow betting online and on mobile apps. The state expects to launch its gambling operations no later than November 1, 2020.

Texas: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

A proposed bill would allow mobile and online wagering on pro and college sports, but it will require a referendum amending the state constitution to be approved by voters.

Utah: Not legal.

And very unlikely to happen.

Vermont: Not legal, but legislation proposed.

Very little gambling is permitted in Vermont to begin with, but there is a proposed bill to legalize mobile sports wagering in-state. There hasn't been much movement on the proposal yet.

Virginia: Legal.

In April of 2020 sports betting was legalized in Virginia and the bill passed by state legislature should lead to Virginia sportsbook apps going live by the end of 2020. In. the 2020 election, Virginia approved casino gambling in four locations.

Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth and Norfolk all approved ballot measures authorizing casinos in the 2020 election.

Washington:Legal.

The state passed legislation in early 2020 to permit sports gambling at tribal casinos in-state. The state does not allow for mobile/online wagering.

U.S. legal situation: How we got here

PASPA effectively limited U.S. sports betting to Nevada, although Delaware, Montana, and Oregon carried a grandfathered clause. PASPA forbade states outside of those exemptions above from regulating and taxing sports betting.

New Jersey led the charge to legalize sports betting. SCOTUS recognized its decade-long crusade against the major professional sports leagues and ruled to overturn the longstanding act. The ruling by SCOTUS put an end to PASPA and gave each state the ability to enforce and implement its own legal sports betting standards and regulations.

Legal sports betting came to Mississippi on Aug. 1, 2018, with the Mississippi Gaming Commission (MGC) tasked with regulation and oversight. Bettors can leverage mobile betting capabilities; however, online wagering must take place within the grounds of a casino.

The Gaming Control Act, introduced during the state's 2019 legislative session, would have sanctioned the use of mobile sports betting apps anywhere in the state. Sen. Willie Simmons started the conversation, but other MS lawmakers were not ready to change the state's sports betting operations. Subsequently, the bill fell short on Feb. 5, 2019. In January 2020, a similar bill (MS HB 172) was introduced in the House but failed to gain traction.

In March 2020, legal sports betting landed in Big Sky country. Governor Steve Bullock signed HB725, which revised state lottery laws to authorize sports wagering.

While Montana can tout mobile betting as a legalized activity, there is a caveat. Gov. Bullock passed on the opportunity to establish an open, competitive market in the state. The state lottery and its adopted platform, operated by Greek gaming company Intralot, were awarded the contract without a public bidding process.

Nevada is a mature market with legalized sports betting dating back to 1949. It was first to control sports betting, which organized crime syndicates had previously operated.

Decades of regulated sports betting experience and an established track record helped make it the gold standard for sports betting. Online sports betting is available, but bettors must first register for an account in person at a casino.

Retail and mobile sports betting is available for many sports, and betting on New Hampshire's in-state college teams is also legal. A proposed bill would expand the number of retail sportsbooks and allow them to accept live bets. It's unclear yet if the initiative has positive momentum.

The Penn National Gaming owned Barstool Sportsbook officially launched in New Jersey on Aug. 24.

The Land of Enchantment was the sixth U.S. state to offer legalized sports betting. While the practice is legal in New Mexico, it is limited to a retail or an in-person experience. Lawmakers haven't passed a sports betting bill to legalize online activity within the state since the fall of PASPA.

Santa Ana Star, operated by the Pueblo of Santa Ana, took the state's first retail sports bet on Oct. 16, 2018. Additional tribal gaming centers have followed, including Hilton Buffalo Thunder Sportsbook, The Sportsbook at the Inn of the Mountain Gods, and the Isleta Resort and Casino Sportsbook.

Despite infighting and opposition from outgoing Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York is inching towards legalizing mobile sports betting. Cuomo signed legislation for the 2022 fiscal year, including a proposal to allow online sports gambling in the Empire State.

Retail sports betting was legalized in the wake of PASPA, with the first bet placed on July 16, 2019, at the Rivers Casino in Schenectady. Despite retail betting outlets found at the state's casinos, New York loses hundreds of millions in annual gaming revenue to New Jersey and neighboring states.

The growing online market includes brands like DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Tennessee Action 24/7.

Wyoming's mobile-only sports betting bill, signed into law by Governor Mark Gordon (R) on April 5, 2021, permits statewide mobile sports betting. An authorized sportsbook can operate an online portal without having an affiliation to a brick-and-mortar casino.

Wyoming Rep. Tom Walters introduced bill WY HB 133, nearly identical to one submitted a year earlier. The bill designates a minimum of five online sportsbooks but no cap on the total amount. Online sports betting in WY carries an age requirement of 18 years and older and permits betting on all sports. The bill was also the first to allow cryptocurrency as a valid payment method for sports betting activities. With legislation in place, the first sportsbooks could launch during the 2021-2022 NFL season.

Sept. 1, 2021, marked the arrival of legal mobile sports betting in Wyoming. The state's gaming commission approved applications from BetMGM and DraftKings, and both launched the same day.

The Connecticut legislature approved sports wagering in May 2021 through a tribal-state agreement. Governor Ned Lamont formally approved House Bill 6451, leaving the Department of the Interior to review the compact, as federal approval is pending.

The gaming bill includes provisions for mobile and retail sports betting, with the services provided by the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes and the Connecticut state lottery. With the lucrative tri-state market in play, legalized sports betting would be a significant boon for CT.

Connecticuts three-party sports betting market is taking shape. Rush Street Interactive will join DraftKings and FanDuel in claiming the state's third and final sports betting license. Lottery officials are targetting the NFL season opener on Sept. 9 as the go-to-market launch date.

On Sept. 9, 2021, Gov. Lamont informed his constituents that the federal government has signed off on the state's plan for sports betting and online gaming.

Legal mobile sports betting is coming to Florida, with the state announcing a proposed Oct. 15, 2021 launch. In conjunction with Florida's Seminole Tribe, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a gaming pact on May 25, 2021, that would allow the Seminole Tribe to offer retail and online sports betting in the Sunshine State.

Florida's pact with the Seminole Tribe was approved by the U.S. Department of the Interior on August 6, 2021, clearing the path for retail and online sportsbooks to operate on Seminole grounds.

Pain points persist, with statewide mobile betting front and center on the docket. Industry heavyweights DraftKings Inc. and FanDuel Group are essentially frozen out of the pact, which prompted them to inject $10 million each into a proposed campaign to amend Floridas constitution.

Of particular note, the bill legalized up to 60 online sportsbooks to operate in Maryland.

Louisiana Sports Betting Legal Update September 2021

Legal sports betting has passed in the State Congress. Now it is time for sportsbooks to apply for licenses through the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. There is a possible 41 online sportsbooks and 20 retail sportsbooks coming to the State of Louisiana. Each one of the 55 parishes with legal sports betting will have the chance to bet online with the regulated and licensed online sportsbooks in Louisiana once the betting launches. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board approved emergency rules for sports betting on August 19 and the rules went into effect on August 23. With that update, sportsbooks are hopeful for a launch at some point during the 2021 NFL season.

After a very long and hard-fought battle in the State House and State Senate of Louisiana, voters in the 2020 election were given the opportunity to vote on legalizing sports betting in their district, or as Louisiana calls them, parish. The ballot did not mention any exclusion or inclusion of online sports gambling, and instead, that decision was left open for regulatory bodies in 2021.

Louisiana became next in a long line of states in the Union to legalize sports wagering following the Supreme Court Decision that deemed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 unconstitutional. This was the bill stopping states from legalizing sports gambling, and now, the states basically have full control.

The November 2020 ballot had a simple question for each and every voter on whether they would like to legalize sports gambling within their parish. 55 out of the 64 parishes voted yes, making sports gambling possible in those locations.

The bill that this vote was attached to gave the regulation power to the Louisiana Gaming Control Board. They now hold all the cards for the future of sports betting in these parishes that have chosen to legalize sports wagering.

The election did not mean instant sports betting availability; the gaming commission, alongside lawmakers, had to create the regulations and tax laws revolving around sports betting. That has now been completed.

Many experts and some congressmen and women are hopeful for a late 2021 launch date for sports betting, possibly as soon as October. Now that legislation has been complete, it is all up to the gaming control board to finalize the licenses and get sports betting launched. This process was accelerated by the approval of emergency rules by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, and permanent rules should be finished in the coming months.

2018 SCOTUS overturns a law that bans sports betting throughout the United States. This sets the stage for each and every state to make their own decision on sports betting.

March 2019: Daily Fantasy Sports is offered up in a bill proposed by the House; this was to set the groundwork for sports betting.

June 2019: The first attempt at a gambling law, including sports betting and daily fantasy, falls short. After putting together a bill for DFS, there was an attempt to sneak sports betting onto the bill, which made it fail in the state legislature.

March 2020: New sports betting bill is introduced to the House with much more promise due to the new faces in the state legislature.

May 2020: The House voted in favor of the sports betting bill, and then the Senate passed it two weeks later. This allowed for there to be a ballot measure asking each and every parish if they would like to authorize sports betting.

November 2020: 55 out of 64 parishes vote yes to sports betting, allowing it to launch in those locations. This vote also gave the Louisiana Gaming Control Board power to regulate sports gambling.

June 2021: The legislation to regulate and tax legal sports betting passed. This legislation lets up to 41 online sportsbooks to launch in the state. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board has the power to regulate and hand out licenses.

August 2021: The Lousiana Gaming Control Board approved emergency rules which went into effect on August 23. These emergency rules start the licensing process and allow for permanent rules to be established in the near future.

September 2021: Sports betting is likely to launch in October after Hurricane Ida forced a postponement of its legalization.

With the legalization of sports betting, residents of Louisiana are probably looking for where they can bet. While betting is legalized, there are no currently licensed locations or online sportsbooks in the state. Louisiana bettors will likely have many options once sports betting launches.

Online sports betting is the gold standard of sports betting. Tennessee is a great example of a state who actually went online-only and is pulling in millions in tax revenue in just its first month of sports gambling.

Online sports betting will be coming, and there will be a potential of 41 online sportsbooks. Each one of the 20 retail casinos will be able to apply for two online sports betting skins, and the Louisiana State Lottery will be granted one. However, online sports betting on laptops and smartphones will not be immediately available upon launch; that is likely to take a few additional months.

There are currently 20 normal casinos/race track casinos that are regulated by the state, as well as three tribal casinos in Louisiana. These are the places that will be given the opportunity to receive licenses one way or another over the course of the next year plus. You will be able to visit these casinos and place wagers on sports in accordance with the regulations provided by the state.

Offshore sportsbooks are a weird legal grey area. Nothing in Federal Law explicitly prohibits it. However, Louisiana is one of the few states that does seem to have room to argue that offshore sportsbooks are illegal in the state.

This was one of the big reasons to push for legalized gambling through the in-state casinos and, hopefully, online American sportsbooks; Louisiana wanted to give residents a legal alternative for sports betting.

Using an offshore sportsbook means that you are using an unregulated, uninsured, and unlicensed sportsbook to bet with. It is dangerous and not explicitly legal in Louisiana.

With Louisiana offering a possible 41 online sportsbooks in the state, there are some major players who will be racing to get into the Bayou State. These sportsbooks will also be vying for that coveted number one spot in the market in a very passionate sporting state like Louisiana.

DraftKings originated as a daily fantasy company but has made the move to offer sports betting. DraftKings Sportsbook is our top-rated sportsbook, and for good reason. DraftKings offers its users one of the friendliest new-user bonuses of a $1,000 deposit match bonus to make sure that you join the sportsbook on a good note.

Following joining, you quickly notice how many sports and different kinds of wagers DraftKings offers, including a full slate of prop-bets, future bets, live-game bets, parlays, and teasers. On top of this, DraftKings odds pricing is some of the best on these wagers.

DraftKings specializes in mobile sports betting. The user interface is fantastic and is extremely clean while being well organized. It will remind users a lot of the daily fantasy app that is also praised for these positives.

DraftKings has tons of promotions and daily odds boosts for existing users. This means that you can consistently get good value for money simply by choosing DraftKings as your sportsbook. However, the perks do not stop there as DraftKings also offers a wonderful rewards program that few other bookmakers can compete with.

Support is a little lacking on DraftKings as it has no instant live-chat or phone line to address problems immediately. It does have a FAQ page and a place to submit tickets, however.

FanDuel Sportsbook, which was recently acquired by Flutter Company, a gambling investment business, is our next top-rated sportsbook. FanDuel also started out as a daily fantasy website; however, it has moved into the online sportsbook game as soon as it was apparent that PASPA was going to be overturned.

FanDuel is one of the best-designed applications on this list, and its app, both mobile and browser site, is fantastic. It is very clean, organized, bright, and a joy to use. Everything from creating your bet slip to account management and deposits is straightforward with no technical issues.FanDuel has loads of sports and an incredible amount of wagers, including single-game parlays, which is a feature it is pushing very hard. Being able to place a parlay on a single game with spreads, prop bets, and more is a huge plus and a major bonus to using FanDuel.

The existing-user bonuses for FanDuel are plentiful, and all can be found in the promotions tab. However, FanDuel does not have a true rewards program, and you mainly have your choice of several great promotions each and every week to choose from to get value.

When it comes to the new-user bonus, FanDuel will most likely offer its $1,000 risk-free bet that you can use on your first bet slip. Having this much money on a wager completely covered by the risk-free guarantee is massive and gives a chance for first-time users to make loads of cash.

FanDuel lacks live agent support from live chat or phone line but has one of the most in-depth FAQs out there.

The online sportsbook provided by MGM International and GVC Holdings comes in at number three. BetMGM has been one of the biggest and most aggressive sportsbooks in the nation so far. It continues to make strides with professional partnerships and offers exclusive deals to its users due to these partnerships with teams from the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, and more.

BetMGMs sportsbook is great as a sportsbook. That means it has tons of sports, great odds pricing, good values on promotions, and has you covered when it comes to the betting aspect of things. It even has one-game parlays and an extensive pre-made parlay page to choose some great bets on.However, BetMGMs user interface could use some work. The app is organized and is by no means unusable. However, there is a lot of clutter, and you can experience slowdowns when searching for that perfect bet. Oftentimes, BetMGM pushes its value bets or promotions but does so in an intrusive way.

BetMGM support is one of the best out of any sportsbook. It offers live chats 24/7 to answer any question you need. It even has a place to upload documents to make the chat experience even faster and easier. It also has an FAQ and Email option.

The expected new-user bonus is a $1,000 risk-free bet

Caesars is NOT an offshore sportsbook as it operates in the United States and gets licensed in any state in which it offers its services.

Caesars may have too basic of an interface as it can be seen as a little old-school. However, the app and site are so easy to use, it makes for a great option for new bettors.

Caesars has, maybe, the widest selection of sports to choose from and a ton of bets in international sports due to its experience in those areas. This means that if you are looking into soccer bets or maybe international golf, then Caesar might be the best option. In terms of promotions, there is not a lot on Caesars nor is there a real amazing rewards program. However, the value on the normal odds is always pretty good. You can also get great valued parlays and teasers on Caesars.

The support is where Caesars shines, offering the trifecta of Email, live chat, and phone line. This means that Caesars has tons of ways to get in contact with support and help with your issues.

The new-user bonus on Caesars projects to be a $5,000 risk-free bet. However, Caesars is one of the sportsbooks that often changes up its new-user bonus based on the state.

PointsBet is an Australian-based sportsbook that is innovating the bookmaking game. PointsBet offers its PointsBetting, a system of placing wagers in which your stake can be multiplied in or out of the money based on how the bet goes.

PointsBet also offers a full slate of normal fixed-odds or traditional odds like spreads, Moneylines, prop-bets, and more. In-play betting is possible on the sportsbook, and it has one of the best bet slips for parlays and teasers.

The app, both on your phone or computer, is built fantastically. It is so clean, and the dark theme makes it very easy on the eyes when navigating the sportsbook for the perfect bet.PointsBet has a basic rewards program in most states that sees you earn free bet money by placing more bets. It also offers loads of odds boosts daily, as well as promotions.

PointsBet offers a live chat feature that is quick and can answer any one of your many questions about the sportsbook. It also has a help page with an FAQ.

The expected new-user bonus comes in at $1,500 in risk-free bets. This breaks down into $1,000 for PointsBetting wagers and $500 in fixed-odds wagers.

Fox Bet is the final sportsbook on our list and is one of the newest faces to the bookmaking game in America.

Fox Bet offers a classic sportsbook with nothing too special on it. It has loads of wagers at reasonable prices with all your favorite sports on it. However, it does lack a little bit in the design aspect here as it can be hard to find the wager you are looking for.

You can place parlays on the sportsbook, but it is very restrictive when it comes to single-game parlays. It would be nice to see this expanded. Live-game betting is available, and Fox Bet does a great job of having this part of its app running smoothly to place bets in a timely manner.Fox Bet has decent promotions but no fantastic rewards program. It does offer quite a few options for support, though getting into contact with a live agent requires submitting a ticket first. The FAQ page does have lots of answers.

The new-user bonus that is commonly offered is $500 in free bets, which is a nice bonus to start your sports betting career with.

Casinos will be the one avenue that should definitely be offering sports betting in the near future in Louisiana. Here are some of the top destinations in Louisiana that may be offering a sportsbook come the end of 2021 or the start of 2022.

Harrahs Casino is one of the largest casinos in the New Orleans area. Harrahs is a staple in the gaming and hospitality world and offers Louisiana a wonderful location for betting. Harrahs is owned by Caesars, which has a lot of experience offering sports betting in its other locations. This should be one of the best and one of the first places to offer sports wagering, giving New Orleans residents a place to bet.

LAuberge has multiple locations in the state, but its Baton Rouge location will give Louisianas capital city a fantastic location for sports betting. LAuberge has one of the biggest casino floors, and the casino should expand to add a sportsbook when it can offer one. This casino and hotel has just about everything you could want for a get-away, but most importantly will hopefully have sports wagering in the coming future.

Louisiana has arguably three major sports teams, with two of those being professional and one being collegiate.

The Saints are Louisianas team and a massive presence in New Orleans. I expect that when the sports betting finally goes live, sportsbooks will be taking tons of cash on these Saints. NFL bets are one of the most popular forms of bets, and the Saints are a huge organization with a great history in the NFC South.

The LSU Tigers, specifically in football, are a massive entity in the sporting world. As recently as 2019, LSU won a National Title on the backs of Joe Burrows insane performance. Hopefully, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board will allow for collegiate betting that allows for in-state college betting so that residents can put money down on LSU.

Sometimes forgotten, the New Orleans Pelicans have a major star in Zion Williams. The NBA franchise is working its way to becoming one of the better teams in basketball. NBA bets are huge, and wagering on the Pelicans will be a big part of Louisiana sports betting.

Daily Fantasy Sports was supposed to come to Louisiana in early 2020. However, there have been setbacks, and the release date continues to be pushed back. Hopefully, daily fantasy will be made available soon since the legal process was already accomplished to allow DFS to begin.

DraftKings is one of the originals in DFS and offers one of, if not the best, daily fantasy sports platforms. The amount of contests and sports you can play on DraftKings is remarkable, and it has a bunch of promotions for its users.

FanDuel has a very aesthetically pleasing daily fantasy platform. There are tons of contests for both sports and entertainment. If you want a daily fantasy platform that runs smoothly and offers you a bunch of choices, then FanDuel is a great option.

Monkey Knife Fight offers something slightly different from daily fantasy. Monkey Knife Fight offers primarily prop-bet games where you predict prop-bets and try to win cash in competitions. This is a bit of a hybrid when it comes to sports betting and daily fantasy. It is sports betting props with a daily fantasy contest and wagering process.

Yahoo Daily Fantasy has quickly climbed the ranks and become one of the best spots to bet. While it lacks the number of contests and sports as some of its competitors, the platform it offers is great. The design is wonderful, and the contests it does offer are extremely well done and a joy to play.

Louisiana does not have legal online casinos, and currently, there is no plan to allow them in the future. For now, the only way to play poker and casino games will be to go to a physical retail casino in the state.

Not yet, but hopefully by the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022. Bettors in a majority of the parishes in Louisiana approved sports gambling. It is now up to regulators and the Louisiana Gaming Control Board to create regulations and hand out licenses to casinos or online sportsbooks so that residents have somewhere to bet.

Not yet, but there will be. A part of the legislation that was passed regarding sports betting in June of 2021 included the availability of a possible 41 online sportsbooks in the State of Louisiana. Many congressmen and women are hoping for a late-2021 launch.

21 is the legal betting age for casino games and most likely sports betting. This is a pretty universal number within states that have legalized sports gambling. The final decision will be up to the Louisiana Gaming Control Board; however, there is little chance that it is anything other than 21 years of age.

Bovada and MyBookie will allow you to bet on their offshore sportsbooks; however, the legality of this is up in the air when it comes to Louisiana as a state. These sportsbooks are unregulated and not licensed. This was a major reason as to why sports betting was legalized in the first place, to replace these unreliable offshore sportsbooks.

Currently, there are no legal sportsbooks in Louisiana. While casinos will be the first to allow sportsbooks, many experts expect DraftKings, BetMGM, and FanDuel to find ways to offer some sort of sportsbook in the state. Hopefully, these sportsbooks will be online and not just brick and mortar.

The expected launch date by many legislators is 2022; however, there is a chance that Louisiana gets its regulations together very quickly for a late 2021 launch. While sports betting is now legal in many parishes, there are still a lot of boxes to check with regulations before it is launched.

Yes, Louisiana will allow collegiate wagers in the state, including in-state college betting. This means that LSU and other in-state colleges will be eligable for wagers on the major sportsbooks that get licensed.

None yet; however, many of the major casinos like Harrahs and LAuberge Casino will be first in line to get licenses when the regulations are figured out. While sports betting got approved, the details have to be ironed out. It is also possible that these casinos will be allowed to partner with outside sportsbooks, like DraftKings, FanDuel, and others.

Mobile Mississippi Sports Betting Bills Fail Again – Legal …

Posted: at 11:29 am

Mississippi sports betting is staying offline.

Three bills aiming to expand MS sports betting to mobile platforms in the state died in committee this week.

Mississippi was one of the first states to launch sports betting in 2018 but continues to be restricted to retail sportsbooks. Multiple mobile betting bills have failed in the years following legalization.

Currently, mobile betting is allowed on a casinos property in the state. None of the states commercial casinos are using the so-called Mississippi mobile option though.

The three failed bills would have altered the betting landscape by bringing sports betting in Mississippi online:

Since launching in August 2018, Mississippi has generated $103 million in sports betting revenue, and $12.4 million in taxes on $890 million wagered.

In 2020, the states wagering created more than $43 million in revenue and $5.2 million in taxes. Unless the states 24 casino operators can open up statewide mobile, a wealth of potential tax revenue will continue to go into the illegal market.

Every day millions of Americans in 15 states have access to state-of-the-art mobile sportsbooks, allowing them to place bets on their favorite teams and leagues at home while fostering much-needed tax revenue, Sen. Philip Moran said in a release introducing SB 2732. Unfortunately, Mississippi law does not authorize online sports betting, but this bill seeks to change that.

Mississippi has been leaving money on the table by not authorizing online sports wagering, and it is time to modernize Mississippis gambling offerings and do whats best for Mississippians.

Even without the extra betting mobile would bring, Mississippi is watching its monthly handle grow, hitting an all-time high of $61.1 million in October 2020.

The first half of 2020 was slowed because of COVID-19. As sports returned in August, however, the states monthly handles continue to grow year-over-year.

Both November and December 2020 revenues more than doubled compared to 2019, drawing $8.1 million and $7.7 million respectively. Those numbers pale in comparison to markets with mobile wagering however.

Neighboring Tennessee launched mobile-only betting in late 2020, while AlabamaandFloridaoffer untapped potential. Arkansas has retail betting and Louisiana voters approved sports betting in November 2020.

In November and December, Tennessee brought in $5.4 million in taxes through its mobile betting.

The ability to draw potential customers from neighboring states is dwindling, however. Multiple stateslegislatures are looking at legalizing sports betting.

What do + and – mean in sports betting? – RotoWire

Posted: at 11:29 am

The plus (+) and minus (-) in sports betting can refer to either the point spread or betting odds. In terms of the spread, the " - " always refers to the favorite and the " + " always refers to the underdog. For example, you can bet the Dallas Cowboys as a -7 point favorite to beat the Green Bay Packers or the Packers as a +7 point underdog. If you bet the Cowboys -7 and they win by more than seven points, you win your bet. Similarly, if you bet the Packers +7, as long as they lose by less than seven points or win outright, you win your bet.

It's a similar case for the betting odds, though favorites don't always have a " - ," especially in sports like baseball, hockey or soccer where final results are often decided by one run or one goal. It's especially the case in soccer since matches can end in draws, whereas a winner is declared in almost every other sport because of overtime rules. However, in most cases, the favorite will have a " - " in front of its moneyline odds while the underdog will always have a "+ ."

For an example of moneyline betting odds, you can bet the Eagles as a -150 favorite to win or the Giants as a +180 underdog to win. If you bet $100 on the Eagles to win at -150, you would net a payout of $166.70. If you bet on the Giants to win at +180, the payout would be $280 because they are an underdog.

For something like soccer, Arsenal could be a +150 favorite against Everton as a +190 underdog, while the draw would be set at +220. In this case, the payout would be decent for every situation mainly because the teams are even and there are three possible results compared to just two for something like football (unless they go scoreless in overtime). In this case where both teams have a " + " in front of their odds, the team with the lower number is the favorite. The lower number also means a lower payout, which is always the case for betting the favorite on the moneyline. A $100 bet on Arsenal +150 would net $250, while a $100 bet on Everton +190 would net $290. Going further, a $100 bet on the draw at +220 would payout $320.

Sports betting raking in millions more than expected for Colorado water projects – Canon City Daily Record

Posted: at 11:29 am

Since Colorado launched legalized sports betting in May 2020, the state has collected nearly five times more money for water projects than anticipated, gaming officials said.

The start of the National Football Leagues season provided yet another welcome financial bump, with about $44 million in bets during its first weekend (Sept. 9-13), according to Daniel Hartman, director of the states Division of Gaming.

Football is going full bore. It was a big opening for us, Hartman said. It really is the biggest market for sports betting.

Money collected from gambling proceeds goes toward work meant to conserve water, protect natural habitats, improve infrastructure and more, according to Lauren Ris, deputy director of the Colorado Water Conservation Board. And more money equals funding new projects under the Colorado Water Plan at a time when Colorado River reservoirs downstream are low.

Hartman said his office earmarked about $8 million from sports betting for the plan, which sets priorities through 2050 for projects in the following five categories: agriculture; conservation and land use; engagement and innovation; environment and recreation; and water storage and supply.

The Colorado Water Conservation Board doles out the money, and Ris said it tries to fund projects that check more than one box, like work with Colorado Springs Utilities that brings water from the Eagle River Basin to Colorado Springs and Aurora which she said opened up quite a bit of fish and boating habitat.

Before voters legalized sports betting, Ris said her department was awarding grants with whatever money officials found in their couch cushions.

At the outset, legislative analysts projected gambling could bring in between $9.7 million to $11.2 million in its first year, revenue department spokeswoman Suzanne Karrer said. But shortly after voters agreed to legalize the practice, state officials cut their estimates for 2020-2021 to between $1.5 million and $1.7 million in part because casinos werent willing to pay $125,000 every other year to host sports betting, Karrer said.

Even when the pandemic shut down leagues for a few months, gamblers flocked to sports betting made easy through apps. The $3 billion in bets from May 2020 to July 31, 2021, translates into $9.4 million in state revenue, Hartman said.

People found a new way to watch and enjoy sports while they were at home and not actually in the stadiums, he said.

Colorado had four online businesses taking bets in 2020 (casinos were closed); in 2021, there are now 25 online operators and 17 casinos in the towns of Cripple Creek, Central City and Blackhawk.

Ris said the board cant give out any of this windfall until next summer, after the 2022 General Assembly grants it permission to spend the money.
