Sports betting is now legal in Kansas. Here’s what to know when gambling on Chiefs, K-State, KU – The Topeka Capital-Journal

Posted: at 6:12 pm

The first legal sports bet in Kansas was $15 inspired by Patrick Mahomes' jersey number on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl.

Gov. Laura Kelly placed the wager Thursday at Hollywood Casino, kicking off sports betting in Kansas.

"Every day I hear from Kansans across the state who tell me they are literally counting down the hours until they can finally legally wager on sports," Kelly said. "I'm with them: Im so glad this moment has finally come."

Kansas sports fans and Missourians willing to cross state lines can now legally beton their favorite teams.

"Now, Kansans will have another way to show their support for their favorite teams and players," Kelly said. "As long as theyre not the Broncos or Mizzou, I'm good with that."

The sports betting soft launch kickedoff at noon Thursday. It will befollowed by a full opening Sept. 8, which is the start of the NFL season.

The launch comes just in time for the first football games of the season for theChiefs, Kansas State University Wildcats and University of Kansas Jayhawks. That wasan uncertain prospect when the bill passed late this spring and faced a lengthy and arduous regulatory process.

"With NFL season kicking off ... the timing is perfect to showcase our NFL in-play betting capabilities in particular," PointsBet Group CEO Sam Swanell said in a statement.

Several sportsbooks have offered signup bonuses as advertised on social media and television.

"It's an especially exhilarating time of year, and we are excited for eligible Kansans to be able to get in on all the action," DraftKings co-founder Matt Kalish said in a statement.

Previously: We found out when sports betting will start in Kansas. Here's what to know.

The Kansas Lottery and the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission approvedtemporary rules and regulations to operate sports betting. Those guidelines were reviewed by Attorney General Derek Schmidt's office and required his approval.

Near Wichita, the Kansas Star Casino will hosta grand opening Sept. 8 that includes a ceremonial first bet by former Jordy Nelson, the star wide receiver at Kansas State University and the Green Bay Packers.

You can place a wager in-person at one of the four state-owned casinos, though only two have in-person sports betting up and running.

Mobile and online betting is also available through several third-party vendors that contract with the casinos.

The state's federally recognized Native American tribes could soon offer betting. More locations, such as restaurants and gas stations, will likely offer ways to gamble on athletics in the future.

Kansas Star Casino in Mulvanewill have in-person sportsbook and mobile sports betting through FanDuel.

Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City will have mobile sports betting through DraftKings. In-person wagering is expected to be offered in the future.

Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg will offer mobile sports betting through BetMGM, Caesarsand PointsBet. In-person betting is expected to be available in the future.

More: Inflation isn't just at the store but also hurt Kansas pensions. Here's what officials will do.

A money line is a simple bet on the result of a sporting event, such as whether a team wins a game. You win money if you pick the correct outcome.

Point spreads are a type of wager that encompasses the outcome while factoring in how close the score endsup. You win money if you bet on the favorite and they win by more than the expected margin. You can also win money if you bet on the underdog to pull off the upset or to "cover" by playing a closer game than expected.

Over/under bets are placed on the combined score of both teams in a game. You win money if you correctly predict the total points scored to be either over or under the number set by sportsbooks.

There are futures odds, such as predicting far in advance who will win the Super Bowl or the college football Heisman Trophy. Such bets tend to be more lucrative.

Other bet types are also offered, such as same-game parlays, player props and special odds.

The Kansas City Chiefs are among the best odds to win the Super Bowl, just behind the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Vegas Insider reports. The sportsbooks are so confident in the Chiefs being a safe bet to make the playoffs that prop odds would require you to put up $210 for the chance of winning $100.

Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is just behind Josh Allen on MVP odds.

While theKansas City Royals have struggled this season, Vegas thinks infielder Bobby Witt Jr. still has a slim shot at AL Rookie of the Year.

Sporting Kansas City would be among the riskiest bets to win the MLS Cup, Vegas Insider reports. The United States has odds in the middle of the pack for winning the FIFA World Cup, while USMNT star Christian Pulisic is a longshot to be the top goal scorer.

Vegas odds aren't very hopeful for either Kansas State University or the University of Kansas to pull of a national championship season in NCAA football.

For fansexpecting Nebraska transfer quarterback Adrian Martinez to lead the Wildcats to a successful year, betting the over on the 6.5 win total could be of interest. K-State won eightgames last season with Skylar Thompson running the offense. Star running back Deuce Vaughn is a longshot to win the Heisman, Vegas Insider reports.

For fans confident that coach Lance Leipold's squadtakes a step forward this year after winning two games last year, they could be intrigued by a2.5 win total. For less hopeful fans who don't want to wait until basketball season, the more favorable football odds may come on whether the Jayhawks cover the spread in matchups.

The defending national champion Jayhawks are among the favorites to make the Final Four, according to Vegas Insider. Sportsbooks have Kansas behind Gonzaga, North Carolina, Houston, Kentucky and Duke.

How much of a cut the state would take of the revenue was a top issue lawmakers debated, ultimately settling on a 10% tax. A few million dollars worth of tax revenue is expected to come in annually.

The current fiscal year is expected to see $1.8 million in new tax revenue to the state. The fiscal estimates increase to$6 million and $10 million in the next two years.

The revenue will go toward a white collar crime fund used to investigate illegal wagering, a new fund designed to attract professional sports teams to Kansas and combatting gambling addiction.

While the state may not be rolling in much dough, the spending is expected to help businesses by legalizing an activity that benefited offshore operators, keeping more of their money in Kansas.

"Casinos, restaurants, and other venues across the state now have another way to attract Kansans to those establishments creating jobs and driving economic growth," Kelly said.

If you or someone you know has a gambling addiction, the state has resources to help.

The problem gambling hotline is 1-800-522-4700. Trained professionals are available 24 hours a day.

Sports betting experts weigh in on the 42 companies indicating their interest in a sports betting license in – MassLive.com

Posted: at 6:12 pm

Sports betting experts say the 42 companies that are signaling their interest in taking part in the Massachusetts sports betting industry represent a robust group with the potential to create a competitive market.

Forty-two companies told the Massachusetts Gaming Commission they are interested in applying for a sports betting license, according to a list released Thursday morning. That includes well-known companies like FanDuel and DraftKings and local groups like the owners of Raynham Park.

Foley Hoag partner Kevin Conroy, who specializes in sports betting, said Thursday the very robust list is good for the Gaming Commission because members will be able to dig in on issues of importance beyond whether a company is suitable for the state or if they have integrity.

I expect the Gaming Commission will put some real emphasis on making sure that some of the companies in this have diverse ownership bases, and have diverse employee bases, he said in an interview. I think the commission will put some precedent on, or put some weight on determining if you are offering a really robust responsible gaming platform.

Gaming commissioners requested companies turn in notice of intent forms for informational purposes only in an effort to better understand the potential field of entities that want a wagering license, to set themselves up as a vendor, or just be involved in the creation of Massachusetts newest gaming industry.

The form asks for basic information is the company licensed in another jurisdiction, what business will it likely do here, what type of license are they seeking, and are they also pursuing licensure in another part of the country.

The list of companies includes Ceasars Sportsbook, BetMGM, Commonwealth Equine & Agricultural Center, Digital Gaming Corporation, Bet Fanatics, Fubo Sportsbook, G3 Esports, Mohegan Digital, Penn Sports Interactive, Plainville Gaming and Redevelopment, PointsBet Massachusetts, WynnBET, and Sportradar Solutions, among others.

Theres also Betr Holdings, a microbetting company founded by Jake Paul that plans the launch of a sports betting app in Ohio, whose market is slated to premiere in January.

A handful of the names on the list are business-to-consumer oriented and may be looking to operate a sportsbook, while others are business-to-business and are likely wanting to provide services to the sportsbooks.

Sports betting attorney Daniel Wallach said people should not automatically assume that all 42 companies are looking to facilitate bets. Take Sportradar Solutions, which previously said it submitted a form because they want to seek a license to act as a supplier

Also among the names are an established group of casinos that have moved into the digital sports betting world Caesars Sportsbook, BetMGM, Mohegan Sun, Seminole Hard Rock Digital, Resorts World Bet, and Blue Tarp reDevelopment, which is connected to MGM Springfield.

Some of those companies are no strangers to Massachusetts.

Mohegan Sun made a run at earning one of the states casino licenses in 2013 when it proposed building a facility in Eastern Massachusetts, while Rush Street made an unsuccessful bid at opening a casino in Brockton.

Both of those companies were thoroughly vetted by the Commission, found to be suitable, Conroy said. Youre seeing some companies who have already tried in Massachusetts, who were not successful, thinking about coming back to Massachusetts, which is interesting, and its a credit to the Gaming Commission.

Encore Boston Harbor which is pursuing sports betting won the Eastern Massachusetts casino license, and MGM Springfield, also looking to offer sports betting, won the Western Massachusetts license. A license for Southeastern Massachusetts, which Rush Street had competed for, was never awarded.

Several of the companies are also connected to Native American groups. FSST Interactive is run by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Seminole Hard Rock Digital is run by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and Mohegan Sun is run by the Mohegan Tribe.

Wallach said the presence of three out-of-state tribes really jumps out as a surprising development. There is no reason why the Seminole Tribe of Florida, he said, would not want to pursue a license in another jurisdiction.

I didnt anticipate that the Seminoles would be applying for one of the online gaming licenses in Massachusetts, he said. But it sets up an interesting or an intriguing possibility that they could become a favored partner of any of the state-licensed casinos.

Some of the companies will have to go through a complex application process if they are interested in one of the states seven untethered digital sports wagering licenses which are unique in Massachusetts because they do not require affiliation with a casino or racetrack.

Wallach said potential sports betting operators will need to show a track record of performance, suitability, and a plan for responsible gaming.

This is a Gaming Commission that takes responsible gaming very seriously, Wallach said. Responsible gaming is at the forefront of the Gaming Commissions objectives in selecting suitable sports betting operators.

The sports betting landscape here allows for three types of licenses, one for established casinos and slot parlors, another for simulcasting or racetrack facilities, and seven untethered licenses for companies looking to facilitate wagering on a mobile application or digital platform.

Conroy said the race to get one of the seven digital licenses will be competitive, and companies will need to make a solid case to the Gaming Commission for why they are best suited to get one.

The Gaming Commission will be very interested in national companies competing for this, he said. But we also remain parochial, and to the extent you are putting together a team that includes people from Massachusetts, I think the Gaming Commission will respect that and reward you.

Arizona’s First Year Of Legal Sports Betting Better Than Expected – Sports Handle

Posted: at 6:12 pm

Over the last 12 months, Arizona regulators have constantly been surprised. In a good way.

On Sept. 9, 2021, the state became the biggest in the West to go live with digital and retail event wagering. From the time-release map the geofencing company GeoComply shared on that first day, to reaching $1 billion in handle in under three months, to consistently seeing handle of about $500 million per month, well, Arizona Department of Gaming Director Ted Vogt has been all smiles.

The first year was better than I expected, Vogt said. I think what surprised us the most was the pent-up demand for event wagering in the state, and how consistent it has been. Everything shows us that the fundamentals are there for a strong market.

The numbers bear that out Arizona operators were the fastest in U.S. history (at the time) to reach $1 billion in handle, needing only 82 days, and reached $4 billion in handle in eight months. If the numbers stay consistent, Arizona operators likely broke the $5 billion handle barrier in July, 11 months after launch. For comparison, Illinois operators are currently the fastest new market to $5 billion in the post-PASPA era in 16 months. In March, Arizona bettors wagered a record $691 million, and that same month, a single operator DraftKings surpassed $1 billion in total wagers.

BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel continue to battle for market share in the state, with DraftKings holding a slight edge over FanDuel in handle but FanDuel leading in gross gaming revenue, with BetMGM second in that category. Caesars Sportsbook and Barstool Sportsbook are also in the top five in both categories, but well behind the top three.

With about 7.3 million people, Arizona is the eighth-most populous state to launch wagering since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was overturned in 2018. Until New York launched digital betting in January 2022 with more than $1 billion in handle the first month, no other state had come close to the speed with which Arizonas market grew.

Home to the NFL Arizona Cardinals, the NBA Phoenix Suns, the MLB Arizona Diamondbacks, the NHL Phoenix Coyotes, two big-time college football and basketball teams at ASU and Arizona, a NASCAR venue, and a PGA Tour stop, Arizona is the true definition of a sports-crazy state, though it is often overlooked in the shadow of California and in the shadow of Nevada when it comes to gaming.

It kind of amazed us that in the first three months we reached $1 billion in handle, Vogt said. But it was still surprising, and pleasantly so.

Its likely that Vogt and his staff will continue to be pleasantly surprised. The NFL season, which opens Thursday, will end in Glendale with Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12, 2023, which coincides with the final round of the PGAs Phoenix Open. And before all of that, the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race is set for Nov. 6.

Now that were getting into sports season, we have a lot to look forward to, Vogt said. Theres cooler weather, more people are coming to Arizona.

Vogt points to the NFL as being an excellent partner, and says his staff has already been in touch with the league to get acquainted before it becomes the first legal wagering jurisdiction in the U.S. to host a Super Bowl. On Thursday, one day before the one-year launch anniversary, Arizona will become home to the first live brick-and-mortar sportsbook at an NFL stadium, when BetMGM unveils its State Farm Stadium location on the The Great Lawn, adjacent to the venue.

BetMGM, like many other operators, has been taking bets online for about a year. The State Farm Stadium book will be the third since Sept. 9, 2021, to open at a professional sports venue in Arizona. The only other U.S. jurisdiction with as many in-stadium sportsbooks is Washington, D.C., which has retail books open at Capital One Arena, Nationals Field, and Audi Field.

Last Sept. 9, FanDuel Sportsbook became the first to open a retail sportsbook at a pro venue in Arizona, though there are eight operators tethered to professional sports venues around the state. FanDuels Footprint Center location provides access from both the street and inside the arena and offers a state-of-the-art video wall. On the same day, Caesars began offering wagering via kiosks around Chase Field, and on June 21 it opened a two-story, 22,300-square-foot location adjacent to the ballpark.

Caesars, like several other operators, has multiple retail partners and could have more than one brick-and-mortar location.

September 9, 2021, was a historic day for our company marking the first time Caesars Sportsbook launched in a new state on its first day of legalized sports wagering, Caesars Digital President Eric Hession told Sports Handle via email. When we look back on this momentous year, were encouraged about what lies ahead. Arizona is a state we take pride in operating responsibly in and were thankful for our partners the Arizona Diamondbacks and Ak-Chin Casino for helping us launch and build for the future in the state.

In addition to these three, there are plans for sportsbooks at Phoenix Raceway (Barstool Sportsbook) and TPC Scottsdale (DraftKings).

When Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed the states event wagering bill into law on April 15, 2021, it set into motion a five-month sprint for operators and the ADOG. It wasnt the fastest state to go from legal to live that was Iowa, in about three months in 2019 but it was certainly among the quickest.

It was also fairly complicated. Arizona lawmakers made a unique decision when they legalized, calling for a total of 20 licenses that would allow for digital and retail wagering. But those licenses were split 10 each for professional venues and the states tribes. As of today, eight licenses tethered to sports venues have been claimed and all 10 of the tribal licenses have been assigned. Three teams that play at the Footprint Center have partners the Suns (FanDuel), the WNBA Mercury (Bally Bet), and the Indoor Football League Arizona Rattlers (Rush Street Interactive) but only FanDuel will have an in-person sportsbook at the venue.

Throughout the process, it was clear that while lawmakers were striving for equity with the split, there were too many licenses allotted to professional franchises and not enough to tribes. During the 2022 legislative session, one bill that would give every tribe access to a license was filed, but didnt move.

As of the start of NFL season, there are 18 digital platforms and 24 retail locations, including sportsbooks at casinos, professional sports venues, horse racetracks, and OTBs. That number will go up to 25 Thursday, when BetMGM opens its State Farm Stadium location.

Besides promulgating rules in a hurry, the ADOG also had a hand in working on the tribal compacts, which are needed in order for wagering to happen in Indian Country. That process includes approval from the state and the U.S. Department of the Interior, meaning it could easily have slowed down the overall launch process.

Certainly, we set out an aggressive timetable from passed to go live, Vogt said. While we were working on the rules, we were also putting some meat on the bones from the compact negotiations on how event wagering would be conducted on tribal lands, so there was a lot of work there.

For operators, it was a busy month those that were licensed were also allowed to open physical sportsbooks in Washington state, also on Sept. 9, 2021, and both BetMGM and DraftKings launched digital sites in Wyomingon Sept. 1, 2021.

In addition to being able to bet in person at professional sports venues and tribal casinos, Arizonas law allows for 10 retail-only licenses for horse racetracks and OTBs. None of those opened on launch day last year, but the ADOG has allotted all 10 licenses, and all but one have been approved for operations. Among those that have opened sportsbooks is Turf Paradise, a track that is also in litigation with the state after it applied for a full event wagering license that would allow it a digital platform as well.

Arizonas law does not name which professional franchises may apply for licenses. In some states, including Maryland, the law spells out which venues can apply. But in Arizona, the law includes a list of parameters that a professional franchise must meet, rather than indicating which ones. Because of that, the Arizona Rattlers were able to get a license. Turf Paradise claims in its lawsuit that it meets the list of parameters.

When reflecting on the last year, Vogt is quick to point out that he believes that reaching out to other live states and keeping an open dialogue with operators was critical to a successful launch day.Other jurisdictions pointed out where there would be sticking points and hiccups, he said. In addition, regulators in other states told Vogt that rules should be tailored to his state, and there there is no plug-and-play template that works across the country.

Staff worked long days and extra days in the final weeks ahead of launch setting up a day that was the highlight of the first 12 months.

Launch day was probably the most exciting, Vogt said. We made our geolocation publicly available, so you could watch and just start seeing locations turn on. That immediate moment brought a lot of happiness.

Sports betting in Texas: When it will be legalized, how to bet online, where to find picks, ideal promos – CBS Sports

Posted: at 6:12 pm

There's no better football state in the country than Texas. As high school football ramps up, Texas football fans are more excited for the season than ever. Although there has been increased momentum over the last couple of years in the state, Texas sports betting is still not legal. However, there are also many other critical issues facing Texas voters than sports gambling. The success of other states across the country, from Wyoming to Louisiana, highlights this issue even more. More than a dozen states have legalized sports betting on mobile and desktop devices so fans can wager from the comfort of their own homes. Neither of the candidates for governor has commented on Texas mobile sports betting recently, but there is hope they will be increased momentum after the election to legalize sports betting in Texas.

If Texas online sports betting gets legalized, then the latest Texas sportsbook bonus offer and Texas sportsbook promo code could bound to be very popular with new bettors in Texas. Before Texas online sports books get the go-ahead, new bettors should be familiar with common sports betting terminology. Here is a guide to sports betting terms from our friends at SportsLine that will help you get ready in case Texas online sportsbooks become a reality.

There are several ways you can make sports wagers both online and in retail sportsbooks and plenty of bet types you'll want to familiarize yourself with.

Moneyline: The most straightforward wager in the game is betting on your team to win. That type of bet is often referred to as a money-line bet. You are betting on a team to win the game or match. These odds will change corresponding to their odds of winning.

Parlay: A parlay combines multiple bets or wagers onto one ticket for a bigger payout. The Parlay can include against-the-spread bets, totals, props, or anything in between. This bet is popular because it allows a bettor to bet small amounts, resulting in a much bigger payout. However, parlays are risky and it is wise to wager responsibly because the likelihood of winning is much lower over time.

Teaser: A teaser is a way to combine multiple outcomes but increase your odds of having a winning ticket. Most commonly used for football, teasers are used to move the line from a game so it is more likely to win. For example, if two football teams are favored by eight and you think they will both win, you can bet them both as a "teaser" and both lines will move down six points to -2. Of course, both outcomes will have to happen, but you are getting a much better line and it will hit more often than an original parlay.

FanDuel Readies Launch of Cable Network Focused on Sports Betting – Variety

Posted: at 1:57 pm

Kay Adams is getting ready to roll the dice on a new opportunity.

The former NFL Network host is launching a new morning program that will rely heavily on chatter about betting, all on a cable network operated by one of the biggest facilitators of betting in the business: FanDuel. She might talk about the over and under on her getting a speeding ticket in Los Angeles or on the types of things that might show up in HBOs new House of Dragons series. But she also stands ready to mix it up with knowledgeable guests and experts on odds making and wagering on upcoming sports games.

Betting on sports is a part of our game. Its the future of the industry, says Adams. I want to be on the right side of that.

Her new show will serve as one of the signature offerings of FanDuel TV, the launch of which represents the first foray by one of the industrys major legalized sportsbook operators into the media business. To be sure, ESPN2 features a regular show about betting, The Daily Wager. DraftKings, one of FanDuels biggest rivals, produces a series of podcasts. And Caesars Entertainment struck a deal in June with Peyton Mannings Omaha Productions to produce podcast and digital series.

But none of them operate a 24-hour TV schedule. FanDuel is betting on the power of linear TV (with broadband accompaniment) at a time when that business has more skeptics than in the past. General-entertainment and sports outlets that rely on cable for distribution have seen their subscribers drop and audiences dwindle and more consumers move to streaming venues to watch their favorite programming.

FanDuel launches its network amid a push to legalize certain types of gambling across the nation. The market for legal sports betting is seen as growing from $4.3 billion in 2021 to $19.7 billion in 2026, according to estimates from Ellers & Krejcik, a market-research firm. Already, 36 states allow legal betting, with 58% of the adult U.S. population residing in one of those states. Advertisers who want to lure the gambling crowd could make use of a national media outlet that caters to them.

As digital companies win sports rights, they are making the games more interactive. Amazons Prime Video, for example, will surround its Thursday Night Football streamcasts with alternate fees and the chance to explore stats and highlights, all with the click of a button.

FanDuel isnt starting from scratch. It has owned the TVG cable network largely focused on horse-racing and once part of TV Guide Inc. for years, part of an acquisition made by a predecessor company. But its efforts might just create, if not the next ESPN or Fox Sports, then certainly the next ESPN or Fox Sports of sports betting.

I am rebuilding TVG as FanDuel TV to be the first network built from the ground up that is designed to be watched with a phone in your hand, says Mike Raffensperger, FanDuels chief commercial officer, in an interview. Every single frame on the screen will have something you can interact with.

Both FanDuel and its broadband counterpart FanDuel+ will go live in September. Adams new 11 a.m. weekday program isnt the only offering. Pat McAfee PMI Network will produce content that will be used in FanDuel TVs weekly block of programming. The Ringer, the sports and culture hub backed by Bill Simmons, will provide material from its podcasts and digital networks. More Ways to Win, hosted by former ESPN anchor Lisa Kerney, will continue to run on the network. FanDuel TV will also showcase international basketball thanks to a new licensing agreement with Sportradrar that will give it more than 3,000 hours of live international sports to show And FanDuel TV will continue to highlight horse-racing coverage that has long been available on TVG.

FanDuel hopes to break the mold, says Raffensperger. The world does not need more very analytic, pick-based touts of the Xs and Os of gambling. There is a lot of that out there, and frankly, I dont think it can always be that interesting, he says. Im interested in creating something that features voices like Kays that are unique, authentic and have real engagement with their audience, and can thread gaming into broader editorial narratives in sports and culture.

Adams, the sportscaster, expects to talk to a new type of sports audience, one that plans on interacting with the games they see rather than passively taking them in. To me, success on this show will be building a community that is ready for the future of what sports content looks like, she adds.

Handful of companies express interest in Mass. sports betting license – Axios

Posted: at 1:57 pm

At least half a dozen companies have formally expressed interest in a Massachusetts sports betting license since regulators started soliciting information last week.

Driving the news: Six companies have submitted notices of intent to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission as of Tuesday, spokesperson Thomas Mills told Axios.

Yes, but: The new market won't take off until the commission finalizes regulations and issues licenses to prospective operators, which must be vetted.

DraftKings: The Boston-based sports book pushed state legislators for years to legalize sports betting in Massachusetts.

GAN Nevada: GAN is a Las-Vegas-based online gaming software company. It's worked with Station Casinos, a hotel-casino company, to help develop a "one-stop shop" for retail and online sports betting throughout Nevada.

WynnBet: The sports betting arm of Wynn Resorts, the parent company of Encore Boston Harbor.

Fanatics: The Florida-based sports merchandising company started expanding into online sports betting last year, hiring FanDuel CEO Matt King to lead the company's gaming venture.

Sports betting in Georgia: When it will be legalized, how to bet online, where to find picks, solid promos – CBS Sports

Posted: at 1:57 pm

Georgia sports fans shouldn't have to wait too much longer to join in on the legal online sports betting craze that is sweeping the country. Efforts to get a measure on the 2022 ballot regarding legal Georgia sports betting were unsuccessful, but it's believed those efforts will be renewed in 2023. Since the Peach State is passionate about its sports teams, there is no doubt that Georgia mobile sports betting will be very successful. The question is when sports betting in Georgia will become a reality.

If Georgia sportsbooks get the green light, the latest Georgia sports book deposit promo and Georgia sports book promo code could be a big hit with first-time bettors. Now is the perfect time to brush up on sports betting terminology with this helpful guide from SportsLine so you can wager like a pro if Georgia legalizes online sports betting.

There are several ways you can make sports wagers both online and in retail sportsbooks and plenty of bet types you'll want to familiarize yourself with.

Money line: Georgia's pro baseball team is gearing up for another deep playoff run, so fans would be placing money line bets to get in on the action. If Atlanta is a -200 favorite, you'd need to bet $200 to return $100 on that side to win. If Atlanta is a +200 underdog, that side would return $200 on a $100 bet if it wins.

Against the spread: You can't bet on football without first knowing what a spread bet is. If Atlanta is a 7.5-point favorite against New Orleans, that side must win by eight points or more to cover the spread. New Orleans can cover the spread by winning outright or losing by seven or fewer to cover.

Parlay: A parlay bet is when two or more bets are included in one wager, so there is both greater risk and higher reward. If you bet $100 on a four-team parlay at 11-1 odds, that bet could win $1,100 if all four sides win.

Glossary of common sports betting terms: Parlay, against the spread, money line, prop bet explained – CBS Sports

Online sports betting is now legal in more than 30 states and more sports fans than ever will wager on their favorite teams. Pro baseball gets ready for the postseason while football, basketball and hockey all get their new seasons underway. With more opportunities than ever to try out legal sports betting, it's important to know some basic sports betting terms and sports betting lingo. To get you prepped for placing your first wager, we have put together a quick and helpful guide so you can place your first legal sports bet like a pro.

At Caesars Sportsbook, there are more ways to play than ever. In fact, if you are a new registrant who is 21+ and located in an eligible state (AZ, CO, DC, IA, IN, LA, MI, NJ, NY, TN, VA, and WV)*, you can register, deposit, and get your first bet up to $1,250 on Caesarswith the code GAMEFULLC. If your bet doesn't hit, don't worry. Caesars will give you a single free bet credit you can use within 14 days. (Terms and conditions apply. See details here. Offer expires 11/1/2022). All told, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of your sports book deposit offer.

Before you play, make sure you know the common betting terms you'll see. There are dozens of ways to bet on sports, and this handy sports betting guide can help you figure out what some of the most popular sports betting terminology means.

Money line: Baseball is the main focus in the sports world right now, and the most popular way to bet on it is with a money line bet. If New York is a -250 favorite, a $250 bet can return $100 if they win. If Boston is a +260 underdog, a $100 bet could return $260.

Live betting: You haven't missed the chance to place a bet if a game has already started. Sportsbooks adjust certain odds as a game unfolds so you can place your bets in real-time. You can even wager on the outcome of the next at-bat in a big baseball game.

Prop bet: Try placing a prop bet if you're looking to wager on something other than the final score of a game. Popular prop bets across the major sports include how many strikeouts a pitcher throws and how many rebounds a basketball player tallies.

Against the spread: Gear up for football season by learning how to place a spread bet. If New York is a 7.5-point favorite against New England, that side must win by eight points or more to cover the spread. New England can cover the spread by winning outright or losing by seven points or fewer.

Outright: This is the easiest betting method and can be used across all major sports because it requires you to pick one player to win an entire sporting event. Outright bets are very popular when wagering on pro golf, which has a major tournament this weekend.

Parlay: With a parlay bet, you can wager on multiple teams and even on multiple sports with one bet. This betting style is risky because all sides have to win or else the bet is a loser. But if all sides win, the reward is much higher.

Teaser: This method pays lower odds than a parlay, but remains popular because handicappers still find them profitable. If you don't love a particular spread or spreads being offered, a teaser allows you to buy a certain amount of points in either direction to increase the likelihood of you hitting your bet. Let's say you believe two seven-point favorites will win their games outright but you are unsure whether they can cover the touchdown spread. Using a six-point teaser would reduce each team to a -1 favorite, meaning they only have to win by two points. This reduces the payout but deployed correctly, it can be a profitable strategy.

Push:This is when neither team can cover the spread because there is a tie. If Kansas City closes as a three-point favorite against Las Vegas and wins the game 27-24, neither team covers the spread and all bets are returned.

Over-under: This is an easy way to wager on sports with high score totals, so it's perfect if you want to bet on basketball. Sportsbooks will predict the final total of the teams' combined points and you simply pick whether you think the final total will be over or under the sportsbook's number.
