Republican Ed Thelander apologized for referring to federal fisheries regulators as rapists after being criticized by Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree during a spirited debate between the 1st Congressional District candidates Wednesday.

While the candidates debated a range of issues, including asylum seekers, energy, abortion and student loan debt, it got personal when they challenged each other over their support for Maines lobster industry, which is facing severe restrictions to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale.

Pingree called out Thelander for statements he made earlier Wednesday at a rally for the lobster industry in Portland. In a speech at the event, Thelander compared federal regulations to raping children, saying you dont negotiate with rapists. Maine Democrats issued a statement Wednesday saying the comments show he is unfit for office.

That is not a good way to move forward on policy and I think doesnt help the debate at all, Pingree said during the debate. It sort of drags it down into the gutter in a way that shouldnt happen.

After Pingree criticized the comments, Thelander apologized.

My comments were over the top and I apologize for that, he said. Im very passionate about it. I love those families. Im seeing the struggles they have and nothing has been done about it.

Pingree rejected that assessment. We didnt do nothing, she said, pointing out that she and other members of the delegation from both parties have been fighting similar restrictions since 1997. Dont say Im not passionate about it, said Pingree, who lives in an island community that relies on the lobster industry.

Both candidates agreed that asylum seekers who are in the country legally should be allowed to work sooner. But Thelander also alleged that asylum seekers are driving crime an assertion that has previously been refuted by law enforcement.

If people come here legally we need to get them to work, he said, adding because if they come here and cant work what are they doing theyre stealing or theyre causing problems.

When asked why immigration reform, when framed as a workforce issue, wasnt getting bipartisan support in Congress, Pingree accused Republicans of stoking fear that immigrants are looking to steal jobs from citizens to win votes.

I think its partly because Republicans use it for rhetoric and campaigns, she said. They want to scare people.

Thelander also criticized Pingree for supporting student loan forgiveness, saying that blue-collar workers who did not go to college are being left behind. He said going to college is a business decision, and if a student doesnt have a plan to repay the loans, then shame on you you made a deal.

Pingree acknowledged it is a difficult issue, but said the problem has been allowed to grow for too long.

A tremendous number of young people in Maine, young people and families, are struggling under the weight of that debt, she said, adding that many people in their 40s are also struggling with college bills. If we dont deal with that problem, I think were going to be in trouble.

Regarding energy policy, Thelander argued that the U.S. could bring down prices in general by increasing the supply of oil. Weve got to start drilling for oil again here in America, Thelander said. Getting the price of oil down is going to help with everything.

Pingree said Maine residents are facing a difficult winter with rising energy costs, but that drilling for oil wont help. I believe investing in renewable energy is how well bring the costs down, she said.

Regarding abortion, Pingree said she supports passing a federal law to restore the right to abortion nationwide in the wake of the Supreme Courts decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the adoption of strict bans in many states. While Maine law allows abortion until a fetus is viable, or 22 to 24 weeks into a pregnancy, Pingree said that could change if Republicans win control of the Blaine House and the Legislature.

We would be Alabama tomorrow, she said, referring to one of the states that banned abortion after the Supreme Court ruling.

Thelander said he is opposed to abortion, but that he would leave it up to individual states to establish limits and does not support a national ban on abortions. Thats not a federal issue, he said, adding he wouldnt impose his personal views through a federal law.

The candidates also clashed over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Thelander said the invasion was caused by a lack of respect for American foreign policy resulting from the messy withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan. We need to lean forward hard and get that back, he said.

Pingree, however, accused Thelander of excusing the horrendous actions of Putin and what hes done to the Ukrainian people, adding that Republicans and Democrats are united in helping Ukraine.

Listen, I lived through four years of the Trump administration, she said, saying the former president shunned allies and embraced adversaries. He helped get us into this situation by being soft on Putin.

The candidates, like their parties, have opposing views on a wide variety of issues facing Congress and the state.

Pingree has easily defended her seat over the years. In 2020, she won reelection with 62 percent of the vote, and her district is heavily skewed toward Democrats. A September poll from the University of New Hampshire showed Pingree leading Thelander by 57% to 32%. Pingree also leads in the money race, with $615,000 cash on hand, according to the most recent federal campaign reports, compared to $154,000 for Thelander.

Pingree, 67, lives on North Haven, an island in Penobscot Bay. A former state senator, Pingree challenged Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins in 2002, but lost that race. Before winning her congressional seat in 2008, Pingree was president and CEO of Common Cause, a national nonprofit with a mission of being a watchdog on government. She has three grown children.

Thelander, 53, served in the Navy for 21 years and participated in U.S. operations in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean, according to his campaign website. He lives in Bristol with his wife, Liliana, who immigrated from Venezuela and became an American citizen in 1999. They have three children.

Pingree and Thelander clash over support for the lobster industry in 1st Congressional District debate - Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel

Jodi Theriault, a fitness trainer and reality TV show participant from Gray, is facing felony welfare fraud charges.

Theriault, 42, was indicted by a grand jury in Cumberland County on Thursday on one count of felony theft by deception.

Prosecutors say that from 2009 through 2016, she obtained more than $10,000 in benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, and MaineCare, by hiding assets that would have disqualified her from the programs.

She created the impression that the father of her children was not a member of her household, and also that she did not have access to his income, according to the indictment. She also failed to disclose significant reportable assets including a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and multiple bank accounts.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Kendra Lychwala.

Theriault is a mother of three and appeared on at least two reality TV shows since 2016.

As a contestant on Steve Austins Broke Skull Challenge in February of that year, she ran in 100-degree heat with a 45-pound log on her back, but ultimately was sent home after losing a brawl involving seven other women.

In 2017, she was on the History network show The Selection: Special Operations Experiment, which challenged 30 people with no military experience to endure the same physical and mental challenges that Navy SEAL and Army Ranger recruits sign up for.

A spokesperson for the Maine Attorney Generals Office wasnt aware of an immediate court date. Because the Cumberland County Courthouse is still processing indictments from last week, its unclear who Theriaults attorney will be.

Patrick Williams was stationed in the right corner, a place to which hes often floated only to become a forgotten man.

But early in the second quarter of the Chicago Bulls preseason finale, a switch flipped. Williams settled no more.

He hauled in a dribble-handoff from Derrick Jones Jr., maintained continuous offensive flow by working his way back to the top of the arc and shoveled a pass to Alex Caruso. But Williams immediately set a screen for Caruso. And after using his burly 6-foot-8 inch frame to dwarf Carusos defender with a textbook pivot, seal and roll, Williams had a lane to the hoop. Caruso saw it and exploited it, threading a bounce pass leading Williams to the rim. Williams did the rest, throwing down a forceful dunk in traffic.

What you might not have caught was Carusos conversation with Williams in the aftermath. Caruso lingered following the play and threw up both arms in Williams direction. It was exactly what Caruso had been waiting for Williams to do.

I talked to him about that kind of action, him chasing it into a ball screen and me hitting him in the pocket, a play before or two plays before, Caruso said. Just trying to get him to recognize where his advantage is and where I was going to be able to get him the ball to be aggressive and attack.

And sure enough, two possessions later or whatever it was, he did it.

Vidillion Receives Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG) Verification, and Anti-Fraud Certification across North America - Yahoo Finance

I was reading an article today about Chellie Pingree and a few of her colleagues sending a letter to Homeland Security to add $50 million above the enacted FY 2022 level to the EFSP (Emergency Food and Shelter Program) for humanitarian assistance to migrants. The EFSP has already provided in FY 2022 $150 million to this program and as of July 21, 2022, $85 million is still available. Pingree said that because of the busing of migrants to Washington D.C., New York City, and Chicago, funding should increase. My question is why is she asking for more money for migrants coming into the US illegally instead of helping the homeless or the veterans who have served our country so bravely? Pingree also, along with some of her colleagues, asks Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate the Republican governors busing migrants to sanctuary cities that said they would welcome migrants. What is the difference between the governors doing this or President Biden sending plane loads in the middle of the night to cities?

I also read an article from Reuters dated Oct. 6, 2022, that, and I quote from that article, The Democrat-led border city of El Paso, Texas has sent more migrants on buses to New York City and Chicago than a campaign by Texas Republican governor, a twist in an ongoing partisan battle over US border security. What about all the border towns that are suffering with tens of thousands of illegal immigrants coming to their towns and cities? Plus, all the drugs coming along with some of them. I am not against people coming to the U.S, seeking a better way of life but there is a right way to do it, the legal way. The United States should take care of our own, our veterans, our homeless before illegals. What has Pingree done to help stop the inflow of illegals and drugs?

I have written many times to Pingree, and if she does answer me, she evades the question that I am asking. Ed Thelander is running against Pingree this November. I have met and talked to both Ed and his wonderful wife many times. Ed has fought for our country as a Navy SEAL and now wants to fight for our Constitution, our freedom and this great country of ours. He loves America and loves its people. Does Pingree?

While most of the worlds oceans are warming due to climate change, a new CU Boulder study explains how the waters around the Galpagos Islands are staying cool and getting colder.

Published in PLOS Climate, the study shows that not only does a cold, eastward equatorial ocean current provide the Galpagos Islands a buffer against an otherwise warming Pacific Ocean, but this current has been getting stronger for decades. In fact, the waters off the west coast of the Galpagos have cooled by 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 degrees Celsius) since the early 1990s.

There's a tug of war going on between our greenhouse effect causing warming from above, and the cold ocean current. Right now, the ocean current is winningit's not just staying cool, its getting cooler year after year, said Kris Karnauskas, lead author on the study, associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and fellow in the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES).

This phenomenon is a cause for cautious optimism for the second largest marine reserve in the world, and a biodiverse island ecosystem that is home to several endangered species and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If corals dont bleach and die in these waters off the western coast of Ecuador, and the marine food web doesnt struggle like it will in nearby warming waters, flora and fauna in the Galpagos could help reseed struggling ecosystems and keep fisheries in the region functioning.

As the Galpagos so far has been relatively unaffected by climate change, its worth looking at the Galpagos as a potential site to really try to put some climate change mitigation efforts into, said Karnauskas.

But as one of the few places left in the worlds oceans that are not currently warming up, the waters off the west coast of the Galpagos are also likely in need of additional protections from overfishing as well as the pressures of increased ecotourism.

The human pressures on this area and this mechanism that keeps it alive are at odds, said Karnauskas. Its a major resource that should be protected.

The Galpagos Archipelago may seem insignificant from space, as several tiny dots in the eastern Pacific Ocean. But its their locationexactly on the equatorthat makes them quite significant.

Because the Earth rotates on an axis, this equatorial undercurrent in the Pacific Ocean is also stuck to the equator, locked in by the force of the planets rotation. This current under the surface of the ocean heads quickly from west to east, its cold water rich in nutrients. When it hits the Galpagos Islands, some of this water is forced up to the surface and the chemical reaction of photosynthesis causes an explosion in food for all manner of creatures.

So while the islands are located in the tropics, this cold ocean current that collides with them creates a cooler, stable environment for coral reefs, as well as marine animals and birds who normally live much closer to the poles. The endangered Galpagos penguin, Galpagos fur seal and Galpagos sea lion all thrive on these islands, touted as a living museum and showcase of evolution by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.

Published this August in Geophysical Research Letters, another paper by Karnauskas, and fellow CU Boulder atmospheric and oceanic sciences assistant professor Donata Giglio, used data from thousands of floating ocean sensors, in place since 2000, to observe and confirm that this Pacific equatorial undercurrent is responsible for the cold water that rises from below to surround and support the islands thriving ecosystem.

Karnauskas used different data, when at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution a decade ago, to show how cold ocean currents might protect certain islands or coastlines from the detrimental warming effects of climate change. This new study shows that not only is that proving true for the Galpagosbut that the cold current is strengthening.

There's clear evidence that shows all the way back to 1982 that this current has been strengthening and the cold water on the western shores of the islands has been getting colder, said Karnauskas.

But why is this cold ocean current getting stronger?

This current, which starts near Australia, is already among the strongest in the world. Using a recently developed high-resolution ocean model, Karnauskas concluded that its continued cooling results from changes in the winds across the equator.

While this acceleration of the equatorial undercurrent is consistent with model simulations of future climate change, according to Karnauskas, its not yet clear if this trend can be directly attributed to human-caused climate change or if its the result of natural cycles.

Are the Galpagos Islands safe forever? Not quite, says Karnauskas.

El Nio (the warm phase of a recurring climate pattern across the tropical Pacific) poses a temporary threatshutting down the cold current every couple of years, which causes penguin populations to crash. While El Nio occurs independently of the cold current, it offers a glimpse at what could happen without it.

The worry is if in the future there are changes in this current, it could be really devastating for the ecosystem, said Karnauskas.

And if the oceans continue to warm the way they have been, says Karnauskas, this safe haven from climate change may not stay that way.

What the data shows very clearly is that it's hanging on so far, said Karnauskas. It doesn't imply that it's going to hang on forever.

THE MUMBAI Police Crime Branch team, investigating the case where nearly 4,500 affidavits were found with three lawyers in a Bandra court, sent teams to Virar, Kolhapur, Nashik, and Ahmednagar on Wednesday to verify if the names mentioned on these affidavits belonged to real people. The affidavits are alleged to have been used by the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena before the Election Commission to prove it is the original Shiv Sena.

An officer said, Based on the addresses on these affidavits, we have sent teams to verify the persons and to check whether they are supporting the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena. Apart from searching in the city, teams have also been sent to Virar, Nashik, Ahmednagar and Kolhapur.

The FIR was registered at Nirmal Nagar on Saturday under Indian Penal Code Sections 420 (cheating) and 465 (forgery) after they recovered the affidavits from a notary wherein important details such as Aadhaar cards of the Shiv Sena supporters were attached.

As per the FIR, the complainant had gone to a Bandra court where he found two persons with a massive bundle of affidavits to which they were affixing the notary seal and stamp. Based on the complaint, the police seized the affidavits and registered the offence against unidentified persons as a person getting an affidavit prepared needs to be physically present before the notary.

The Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) has allocated 8 million in funding to support the development of 20 low-carbon technology projects via its 2022 Open Innovation Programme.

The funding focuses on developing and deploying technologies that could reduce offshore emissions, accelerate clean energy production and enable the delivery of the UKs net zero ambitions.

The winning projects fall under seven focus areas, all of which aim to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission technologies and bridge the gap in costs. This includes:

1. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS)

2. Hydrogen and clean fuels

3. Renewables and energy storage

4. Zero-emissions power

5. Venting and flaring

6. Integrity management

7. Late life and decommissioning

Were at a pivotal point in the energy transition, with political and social pressures weighing as heavy as environmental demands. The technology ideas we received were diverse, credible and exciting, making the selection process tough, said Myrtle Dawes, solution centre director at the Net Zero Technology Centre.

There is no single solution to achieving net zero so nurturing innovation is key to establishing an integrated energy system. We are investing in the areas where we know technology gaps exist and where the opportunity is substantial in accelerating the energy transition.

NZTC also disclosed some of the winning projects and what they hope to achieve. This includes projects focusing on electrolyser technologies and materials to reduce the cost of green hydrogen by 60% - a key stumbling block in the hydrogen industry.

Another successful project will explore novel optical sensors to prevent corrosion in carbon capture and storage operations, supporting the UK to expand the CCS market, whereas another project will trial geothermal techniques in the field. The final referenced project will use liquid air battery innovations to accelerate an integrated energy system.

The low-carbon technologies were put through a selection process ensuring each supports the transition towards net zero, with an obligation of trialling and deploying technology within the UK continental shelf. This could drive innovation within the UKs low-carbon space.

In order to provide additional support to the winning projects, not only will they receive funding, but the technology developers also gain access to data, facilities and technology expertise from industry.

According to the NZTC, a total of 154 businesses from around the globe applied for a share of the funding with winning candidates able to secure a maximum of 1 million.

NZTC continues to expand, accelerate and support the growing low-carbon sector in the UK via funding and analysis. The organisation recently highlighted the need to back the creation of demonstration centres around the UK to drastically reduce the costs associated with low-carbon technologies.

Detailed within the Technology Driving Green Energy Growth report, the NZTC believes a range of technologies, which currently are expensive, could be reduced with further investment in technology and innovation. This could be vitally important for the UKs hydrogen, carbon capture storage and floating offshore wind sectors.

NZTC and the Cygnus JV and Sealand Projects identified four electrification options in early September for an offshore oil and gas asset to reduce emissions from its operation.

The Southern North Sea Oil and Gas Asset Electrification Study reviewed the possibility of electrifying an offshore platform with power from offshore wind using the Neptune Energy operated Cygnus platform in the UK Southern North Sea as a case study.

By 2030 the site will have 6.8GW of wind power within 50km of Cygnus, increasing to 14.1GW within 100km of the asset, making it a suitable case study for the investigation of electrification using offshore wind, NZTC said.

THREE is the magic number if history only tells the story for Wrexhams last two promotion campaigns.

Its 20 years since Wrexham had a promotion party as Denis Smith, relegated in his first season as Reds boss, took the club straight back up in the 2002/03 season.

Ten years earlier, it was Brian Flynns Reds who tasted glory in the 1992/93 campaign.

So are these omens looking good as fans - and theres a lot more wearing red and white shirts now - crave for a return to the Football League by winning the 2022/23 National League title.

How the football Gods play out Wrexhams hand over the next six months remains to be seen but theyve made a good start under Phil Parkinson this season - better than that of the last two promotion campaigns and the clubs greatest ever triumph of reaching the old Second Division in 1977/78.

Wrexham won seven, drawn two and lost only one - a 2-0 defeat at high-flying Chesterfield - and smacked in an amazing 29 goals in the opening 10 matches this season.

Going back to that season first with Arfon Griffiths - dubbed the Prince of Wales - at the helm and with arguably the clubs best side, it wasnt all hunky-dory in the first 10 games where they only won three.

The season kicked off in the worst possible way - a 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury Town where Billy Ashcroft scored his last ever Wrexham goal before a big money move to Middlesbrough where ex-Reds boss John Neal had taken charge.

Being tamed by The Shrews is just as bad as being beaten by the Blues at Chester and Wrexham fans were already showing dissent before breathing a sigh of relief with a first win, five games in, at home to Portsmouth when Bobby Shinton and captain Gareth Davies secured a crucial 2-0 win.

Dixie McNeil marked his debut in front of an 8,002 crowd with the first of 88 goals for the club as Wrexham edged out Swindon 2-1 in the battle of The Robins.

Shinton scored the winner at home to Lincoln City on October 1 giving them a pretty average return of three wins, four draws and three losses from their first 10 games.

The other defeats came at Tranmere and Chesterfield while there was also a 1-1 draw at Sealand Road where the notorious Chester versus Wrexham derby attracted a 9,514 gate.

Fast forward to 1992 and Wrexham were back down in Division Four.

Theyd escaped relegation the year before as despite finishing in 92nd place in the Football League, there was no relegation that season.

Spurred on by a famous FA Cup win over champions Arsenal in January 1992, Flynns fledglings sealed promotion the season after.

It kicked off with a 3-1 win over Rochdale at The Racecourse where Gareth Owen, Barry Jones and Jonathan Cross scored in front of only 2,661 fans.

But the wheels fell off with 4-0 and 4-1 defeats at York City and Gillingham respectively.

They also conceded four in a 4-3 League Cup defeat at Bury where new signing from Chester, Gary Bennett, was booed by Reds fans despite bagging a double.

A John Paskin double gave the Reds a 2-0 derby home win over Shrewsbury while there no jeers, only cheers as now goal-den boy Bennett hit a hat-trick in a 4-2 win against Bury.

Paskin was at the double again to seal a fourth win in 10 games as Carlisle United on October 17.

That gave Flynns men a record of four wins, three defeats and three losses which included a 3-2 reverse at home to Barnet, who were also promoted.

And now to the clubs last promotion run that saw Smiths attack-minded team win five, draw three and lose only two of their first 10 games.

There were 1-0 wins at home to Oxford United and at Macclesfield Town where Hector Sam was the match-winner on both occasions.

A 5-2 home defeat to Rochdale on August Bank Holiday Monday ended Wrexhams four-match unbeaten start that was followed up by a 2-1 defeat at Torquay.

The Reds bounced back in fine fashion with two 4-0 Racecourse victories.

Andy Morrell, who went on to net 39 goals that season, scored twice against Swansea where Sam and his Trinidad and Tobago team-mate Carlos Edwards also scored.

Morrell went one better against Exeter with a hat-trick while captain Darren Ferguson was also on target.

And goal-machine Morrell scored in a 1-0 win at Darlington on September 24 to keep the promotion dream alive.

Twenty years on and Wrexham supporters would love to live through that experience again.

The way things are going, it may just happen...
