Atlanta Braves: Tyler Matzeks best tweets of the offseason so far – Call to the Pen

Posted: at 6:49 am

Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Tyler Matzek has not only become one of the go-to guys for the Braves out of the bullpen, but hes also become a must-follow on Twitter for his spot-on tweets.

He may have just given up three home runs in his 78.2 regular-season and postseason innings for the Atlanta Braves last year, but Matzek has already hit plenty of bombs this offseason with his thoughts on the current Major League Baseball lockout and more.

What was Matzeks reaction when Major League Baseball suggested bringing in a mediator to help solve the current lockout? Using a metaphor, it was pretty easy to figure out that Matzek (along with the majority of MLB players) werent impressed with the efforts that MLB had put forth in the effort to end the lockout so far.

Earlier in the month, the Atlanta reliever also floated the idea of the players getting together to play some games in a similar style to made-for-television matchups that have been put together in golf. Would fans tune in? Its an interesting question and thought from Matzek.

Matzek also put together a thought-provoking thread laying out some comparisons between Major League Baseball and the National Football League. Yes, the USFL is coming back to life after the conclusion of the Super Bowl. Will fans tune in and will it become a competitor to the NFL in time?

So far, weve only looked at what Matzek thinks about what is going on in the present. How about a look into a crystal ball from the Atlanta reliever? Matzek is also predicting what the future might look like for relief pitchers (who are people, by the way) who are in his position.

And, as the New Year began, Matzek sent out a word of encouragement.

All of these tweets and more from Matzek have given fans insight into a pitcher who has overcome so much to reach where he is today. Drafted by the Colorado Rockies 11th overall in the 2009 MLB draft, Matzek fell victim to the yips, throwing his career in doubt. However, in a fascinating story, Matzek began working through the issue with the help of a former Navy SEAL and began his climb back to MLB.

That climb landed him in the Braves bullpen and eventually a key role in Atlanta winning the 2021 World Series.

Reigniting the Pentagon and Silicon Valley partnership – TechCrunch

Posted: at 6:49 am

Mike Brown is the director of the Defense Innovation Unit. Prior to DIU, Mike served as CEO of Symantec Corporation and Chairman and CEO of Quantum Corporation. Mike also served for two years as a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow at DoD where he co-authored a Pentagon study on Chinas participation in the U.S. venture ecosystem. The views expressed in the article reflect those of the author and do not reflect the official policy or position of the Department of Defense or the U.S. Government.

TheTechCrunch Global Affairs Projectexamines the increasingly intertwined relationship between the tech sector and global politics.

On November 15, 2021 Russia launched an anti-satellite missile into low-earth orbit without warning, successfully destroying a Russian satellite. Projectile debris from this event not only endangered the astronauts aboard the International Space Station, but also could cause severe damage to satellites that support critical infrastructure here on Earth, such as GPS and power grids, for many years to come.

Just one month prior, China launched a hypersonic missile that circled the Earth and would be impossible to defend against with current technology.

These events are a wake-up call: The United States technological leadership is not assured, and the global standards we developed and maintained with our partners and allies are being rewritten, as new technological advancements give rise to new threats to our nations security.

But these new threats are not insurmountable. In fact, these events should serve as a clarion call for entrepreneurs and investors at the forefront of emerging technology domains, including artificial intelligence, space, cybersecurity and autonomous systems.

To meet the rising challenges posed by asymmetric and cyber warfare, we need to work together Pentagon, academia, and industry as we did more than 60 years ago to build Silicon Valley and our nations technological leadership of today. Government investments helped to create the internet and semiconductors, as well as map the human genome.

I came to the Department of Defense after 30 years in the commercial technology sector to help rebuild the ties that underwrote much of our countrys economic strength and global leadership over the past half century.

The DoD is actively pursuing a technology modernization agenda that not only reflects the changing nature of warfare but also engenders a series of necessary business process reforms. For example, in commercial space, companies are already deploying small satellites to provide more ubiquitous internet access and pioneer rapid launch capability to deliver payloads to various geospatial layers; self-driving cars are providing transportation options; swarming drones are surveilling oil pipelines and inspecting commercial buildings and infrastructure.

These innovations are all dual-use technologies, meaning they have military applications as well. Networking these solutions together is supported by global cloud options that are cost-effective, secure and scalable. Just like companies do, the military needs to harness the insights contained in voluminous data to generate predictive capabilities through AI and machine learning that yield faster and better decision-making.

Business process reforms are equally important to improving our defense posture. Most of the DoDs business processes were established in the 1960s and focused on building large weapons platforms such as tanks, ships and planes. Rapid advancements in the commercial sector, which promise to enhance our militarys technological edge, mean that the Pentagon now needs to buy many more technologies that complement the large weapons platforms we continue to buy.

Its clear the coming decade will be one characterized by intense competition among nations for preeminence in technology. For an increasing number of commercial vendors, this will represent an unprecedented opportunity to tackle complex problems together with the Defense Department.

For instance, with assets in air, space, undersea, on land and in cyberspace, the national security apparatus is effectively the largest collection of sensors in the world. To date, however, these sensors are not designed to seamlessly integrate; rather, they are typically built and operated in silos, making it challenging to implement updates and develop a common operating picture. Building an Internet of Things in spacea global sensor network would provide real-time situational awareness, a resilient communications infrastructure as a backbone for operational decisions and the basis for an autonomous force of sea, land, air and space systems that are small, numerous and agile.

These systems will generate immense amounts of data requiring increased storage, management and analytics, and technology modernization means building better tools to collect information, analyze it, understand it, and make better decisions in the interest of national security. It will also involve more sophisticated protection from cyber vulnerabilities. The physical manifestation of these new capabilities will require greener energy use.

Commercial companies are developing these technologies today, and the DoD must increase its capacity to quickly assess and efficiently procure these solutions enhancing our national security and driving commercial prosperity. Executing this vision means more companies than ever before can participate in a once-in-a-generation economic opportunity that likewise enhances national security in the 21st Century.

To deliver the best technology to our military, then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter recognized the need to break down institutional barriers and inject fresh ideas, technologies, and methodologies from the commercial sector. In 2015, he announced the opening of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to rebuild this connection. DIU was designed to bring innovative and faster contracting mechanisms to bear, making it easier, more desirable and more profitable to do business with the DoD.

At DIU weve already seen how powerful this collaboration can be, from providing ongoing investment at key points of hardware and software lifecycles, uninterrupted access to testing facilities, and showing commercial companies a path to linear growth in the defense sector. This collaboration can accelerate a products development or stimulate a companys growth, showing investors access to new markets.

But maintaining U.S. leadership in key technologies requires changing the 60-year-old acquisition system. DoD is no longer the first mover, the primary investor, or market maker for many technologies today. DoD needs to become a fast follower, adapting and integrating commercial technology not developed by the DoD, to solve defense problems. To do this, DIU is advocating action in three areas:

These three areas may seem obvious but overcoming long-established processes in defense planning and Congressional approval is not easy. And ensuring we can make the sound business case to technology firms of supporting work in national security is essential since there are large markets to serve outside of defense

Accelerating the pace of change and removing barriers cannot be done solely inside the DoD or with a select few commercial companies participating. We need all sides of the triangle of business, academia and government actively engaged, providing different ideas and approaches to accelerate our pace of modernization. Rebuilding the connection between DoD and commercial industry from exchanging talent, acquiring products, having open communications on key issues is critical.

DoD leadership recognizes that we are living through a technological moment unlike any other in our nations history. DIU has a unique and important role to play in bringing commercial technology and methodologies to modernize both critical parts of the militarys infrastructure. Together, like we have done in the past with the birth of Silicon Valley, we can ensure a secure and prosperous future for our nation.

After man dies in Washington Parish jail, 2 inmates booked in his homicide, sheriff says – The Advocate

Posted: at 6:49 am

Two men at the Washington Parish Jail recently gave drugs to a third incarcerated man who died Thursday after taking them, authorities alleged the following afternoon.

Washington Parish Sheriff Randy Seal said Friday that Prentis N. Slocum, 42 of Columbia, Miss., and Cameron James Roy Seal, 21 of Washington Parish, will face counts of second degree murder and principal to second degree murder, respectively, for the death of Brandon Christopher Williams, 31, of Bogalusa.

A spokesman for the Sheriff's Office said Williams started showing signs of "medical distress" around 2 p.m. Thursday and was removed from the jail's housing unit by deputies and a registered nurse. Northshore EMS took him to Riverside Medical Center in Franklinton, the sheriff's office said.

Williams, whom the agency did not identify until Friday, later died at the hospital.

The sheriff's office said Friday that Slocum was transferred to Washington Parish on Tuesday from the Pike County, Miss., jail, and had "narcotics" concealed "inside his body" when he arrived in Louisiana, which he allegedly later gave to Williams and Seal before Williams died.

Twice daily we'll send you the day's biggest headlines. Sign up today.

All three men had adverse reactions to the narcotics, the office said.

Williams had been in the Washington Parish Jail awaiting trial since July 2021, on home invasion and other counts, the sheriff said. Seal, according to the sheriff's office, had been in custody there since Jan. 31 on a contempt of court count.

Other people may face criminal counts for Williams' death, the sheriff's office said.

Lawyers for Seal and Slocum could not immediately be reached for comment Friday evening.

An ongoing coroner's exam on Williams' body will determine the exact cause of death, the sheriff's office said.

The process of manufacturing seals in ancient times seems to have been left to a select group of artisans. In Ur, for example, lapidaries or stone carvers were identified on a tablet and depicted working together with other artisans, crafting stone works, leather, wood, ropes, reed, and metal.

In earlier periods, such as the Ubaid period and up to the middle of the third millennium, as technology was still limited, craftsmen worked with softer stones like chlorite, steatite, serpentine, marble, limestone, and alabaster since these materials could be more easily manipulated and crafted into seals.

In contrast, stamp seals were often manufactured using onyx, porphyry, carnelian, sard, banded agate, and crystal quartz. As technologies were developed and evolved so too did seal design and since seal carving was idiosyncratic from one region and period to another, the seals can be precisely dated. Yet as southern Mesopotamia was largely an alluvial plain, stones for seals and cylinder seal production had to be imported. Iran is considered a likely source which also further demonstrates the extent of trade and commerce that had developed throughout Uruk and Mesopotamia.

As commerce and trade grew throughout the region, no doubt the need for more complex administrative controls also began to evolve in-situ. Simple stamp seals were no longer good enough. Cylinder seals provided administrators and craftsmen the ability to include both more information and an ability to develop a highly utilitarian tool for marking and sealing a larger surface. Unlike its relative the stamp seal, the cylinder seal, because of its larger surface area could support an unending narrative. Cylinder seals could be used for a variety of administrative controls, this shape made it possible to easily cover irregular surfaces with the images carved on the seal.

The Chau Chak Wing seal was carved in calcite, a material which may have come from Iraq or the southern Levant where ancient calcite quarries have been discovered and analysed such as at Teomim and the Abud Caves. Thus, further demonstrating expanding trade or even plundering throughout the region and during the period as new rulers looked to assert their divine rights and control over ancient lands.

When Vern Luckhurst looks back on his time in the hospital following a heart attack last May, he remembers the reindeer stew.

"I think for a whole week I was there, every day I had reindeer stew," said Luckhurst. "They have it flavoured just like you'd be cooking it at home."

At the Alaska Native Medical Center, a 173-bed hospital in Anchorage, Alaska, Indigenous cuisine is front and centre on the patient menu. Depending on what's in season or what has been donated to the facility by hunters and fishers, patients might dine on seal soup, fiddlehead fig pizza or herring eggs with peas.

"They have excellent comfort foods for elders, or just for, you know, native people," saidthe 70-year-old Luckhurst. "Even if it was a low-sodium diet, you know, it still was really flavourful.

"They make really, really good salmon."

Hospitals aren't usually known for having memorable cuisine. But at this facility, the standard bland "tray food" has been set aside in favour of a restaurant-style approach complete with a menu that offers patients choice.

At least 60 per cent of those dishes incorporate Indigenous foods. Now the hospital's traditional native foods initiative is gaining attention as a model of what could be achieved at other hospitals in the United States and Canada.

The Alaska Native Medical Center is the only hospital in Anchorage and the state's only trauma centre. While the focus is onthe Indigenous population, the centre serves patients from all backgrounds.

When Vivian Echavarria took over as the hospital's assistant administrator, she saw just how much that tray food was missing the mark.

"As I was looking at how much food wasbeing thrown out because that's not the food that our people eat, I saw a lot of money going down the drain," said Echavarria, who is now vice-president of professional and support services at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, which includes the hospital.

When the food services contract eventually came up for renewal, she made a requirement that the next contractinclude an executive chef.

"It had to have someone who had the culinary depth, the scope, breadth to be able to prepare foods like you would see [on] these chef programs on national TV," she told Unreserved host Rosanna Deerchild.

Enter chef Amy Foote. Originally from Idaho, Foote worked seasonal jobs in Alaska starting as a teenager and met her husband there.

Then her career took themtorestaurants, hotels and lodges in Montana for about a decade, "all the while dreaming of how we could get back to Alaska," said Foote.

She jumped at the opportunity to pivot to the role at the Alaska Native Medical Center, a move that Foote said has been incredibly gratifying.

"You can cook a very nice steak at a four-star restaurant and it's a one-time experience," she said. "But when you're working in a hospital and you have this opportunity to get someone to eat that maybe hasn't eaten for a couple of weeks, or even a few days, and you help them on their path to healing, on their path back to home and back to their lives, it's a huge reward."

Cooking for Alaska's Indigenous people isn't a one-size-fits-all proposition, said Foote, given there are 229 recognized tribes in the state spread over a vast area.

"So if you're in the north, you're not going to eat the same food as you are in the southeast because the animals and the plants and the geography are different.

"And so that becomes a real challenge learning everyone's traditional ingredients, traditional methods of harvesting, traditional preparations and then actually figuring out how to get all of those ingredients to Anchorage."

Since many of the key animal products can't be bought through the usual food suppliers, the traditional food program relies on donations from hunters and fishers, and those have to meet strict food safety guidelines.

"Coming to Alaska, an animal that I hadn't worked with obviously would be seal.We don't have those in Idaho and Montana," said Foote. "So that was a definite learning curve."

She found guidance from some of the Indigenous women on the kitchen staff who have experience butchering the animal.

"Seal meat is very dense and it's almost like an organ meat and you can kind of look at it and see how nutrient-dense it really is."

Jessilyn Dunegan, a nutritionist at the hospital, said seal soup is her favourite traditional comfort food.

"There is something about seal oil that, once it hits your mouth seems to soothe you from the inside out."

"I think for some, that might be like Grandma's chicken noodle soup."

Providing foods that motivate patients to eat and regain strength is even more crucial given the distance many travel from home for treatmentand the visitor restrictions brought by the pandemic, said Dunegan.

The traditional foods themselves have properties that can help with healing, she said.

"So if we're eating seal oil or herring eggs or something like that, that's really high in omega-3 fatty acids, which gives you a really good anti-inflammatory properties and a lot of other health benefits."

A few Canadian hospitals havealso embraced traditional Indigenous cuisine. Hospitals in the Yukon have been serving traditional foods for 25 years.

And in Sioux Lookout in northern Ontario, theSioux LookoutMeno Ya Win Health Centre servesdonated wild game, which is prepared by elders in a separate kitchen.

At the Alaska Native Health Center, Foote said she's observed a kind of spiritual and physical healing in feeding patients this way.

"There's the act of giving, the beauty in being able to get someone to eat to give an elder who just wants a bowl of seal soup because it's the only thing that they could get down that day. So there's a lot of things that I love about my job."
