Coconuts, Corporations: On Vauhini Vara’s The Immortal King Rao – lareviewofbooks

Posted: August 2, 2022 at 3:08 pm

TALLYING THE VARIOUS uses of the coconut, the 20th-century agriculturist Frederic Rosengarten Jr. writes that [e]very part of the crop can be utilized for some human need. Citing the amount of protein found in one coconuts meat, the versatility of its shell and coir, and the approximate amount of lumber provided by the trunk of its tree, Rosengarten concludes that [o]ne could live almost endlessly on the coconuts products. Here, Rosengarten unwittingly tethers the long history of human-led environmental extraction to the fantasy of living forever on natures endless bounty a fantasy that, as our current environmental crisis makes clear, is antithetical to global, unbounded projects like monocropping, mineral-mining, logging, and drilling. In Vauhini Varas The Immortal King Rao, these realities confront each other, doing so by zeroing in on one resource: the coconut.

Athena, the 17-year-old narrator of Varas debut novel, rehearses the contents of Rosengartens book as she describes the childhood of her father, the titular King Rao. King Raos memories, as well as the text of Rosengartens The Book of Edible Nuts, arrive to Athenas conscious mind via an experimental technology called the Harmonica, an injectable solution that fuses the recipients brain to the internet itself, permitting Athena to seamlessly search for, condense, and save information from the web into the elastic expanse of her own mind. Yet, as Varas novel reveals in its early chapters, Athenas Harmonica has also been granted access to the entirety of her fathers memories. As the aged King Rao empties the contents of his life into his daughters consciousness, he also creates the conditions for Varas sprawling, intergenerational epic, which begins on the Rao coconut plantation in rural Kothapalli, India. Imprisoned for a crime that she did not commit, Athena is tasked with relaying not only the circumstances that led to her arrest, but also those that engendered her fathers rise to wealth, prominence, and, eventually, the restructuring of governmental order. The story of how she came into the hands of the police is not an isolated event; it is part of the larger story of her fathers emigration and his role in engineering the very government now holding her captive. Athenas plea for freedom thus entails not only a retelling of her fathers life and deeds, but also forcibly reliving his memories alongside her own.

The Immortal King Rao begins in an era of peak privatization: government first the US, then the rest of the world has been replaced by a Board of Directors. With the aid of a deific Algorithm, the Board governs its Shareholders (formerly citizens) by endowing them with Social Capital, a metric that stands in for both financial status and general social value. As society swells to its technological and capitalistic limits, so, too, does the ecological catastrophe known as Hothouse Earth. This social overhaul was borne of Kings first invention, a personal computer he called the Coconut. Inspired by the crops endless utility and aided by his wife Margarets keen instinct for business, Kings string of inventions (including the all-knowing Algorithm itself) quickly transcend their status as popular consumer goods; instead, they become the fabric of the worlds economy, sociality, and governance.

In this sense, the supposedly immortal King Rao does live almost endlessly on the coconuts products. As Athena narrates Kings rise to wealth and power, she also covertly reveals how much Kings reverence for his familial crop is entangled in a web of enterprise and environmental destruction. Varas novel, which gestures toward a number of tropes in contemporary speculative fiction technologys increasing imbrication in our social and political lives, the rise of unfettered corporatization, our careening movement toward environmental apocalypse places these consequences on a timeline that begins with a coconut plantation in Southeast India. The farming of coconuts, an enterprise that is emblematic of the deep history of imperial extraction and globalization, sits at the heart of Varas exploration of technology and capital.

Raised by her father on his isolated estate on Bainbridge Island, Athena grows up surrounded by Southeast Indian vegetation: Vara writes, None of the plants on the Raos twenty gorgeous acres of gardens were native to the Pacific Northwest; they were all tropical flora, guava and coconut trees, multicolored flowers that practically spurted from their stems, wax-like. On the harbor cruise tours that circle Bainbridge Island permitting tourists to raise their binoculars in the direction of the famous estate the tour guides quiz their passengers as to how such a feat could be possible in the rainy, cold environs of the Pacific Northwest. The correct answer forecasts one central theme in The Immortal King Rao, which is the fraught relationship between technological innovation and environmental destruction:

More often than not, some home-and-garden aficionado on board would have the answer. King and Margaret Raos secretive, private research organization, the Rao Project, had been commissioned to come up with genetically modified seeds that produced tropical trees and plants capable of growing in cooler climates like Seattles. The group was also working on inserting edible vaccines into tropical fruit eaten by the worlds poor and creating climate-adaptive produces that could withstand rising temperatures.

Recounting one of Kings memories, Athena narrates a scene from his first year as CEO of the Shareholder Government during which King convened a global consortium of experts to examine how science could be deployed to return the climate to historically normal conditions. The march toward Hothouse Earth, however, was already well underway, and the experts presented their report: nothing could be done to rewind the clocks on environmental destruction or, put more bluntly, you couldnt refreeze the Arctic. Disbelieving, Margaret leans in: were these experts really suggesting that humans had exhausted their potential for innovation that if something hadnt been invented yet, it never would be? While his wife remains bent on pursuing technological solutions to climate change, King changes tack. He begins inventing the Harmonica in earnest, describing it as humanitys only chance of having a future. With Hothouse Earth coming, King reasons, we needed to think about how to preserve some record of who we were. It is telling that Kings final accomplishment is only the preservation of who he was, enabling Vara to metonymically telegraph the insistent anthropocentrism that gave rise to Hothouse Earth in the first place.

Kings instinct to create a perfect record of his life is reminiscent of real-life billionaires immortality pursuits think Larry Pages interest in solving death or Elon Musks neurotechnology company Neuralink. Vara, who has worked for years as a technology correspondent for publications like The Wall Street Journal, was undoubtedly influenced by the increasing affinity between techno-billionaires and the hunt for immortality. The source of Kings wealth also resembles many a tech cofounder: The Coconut Corporations whole business was built on extracting and profiting from its users personal information, while claiming its goal was to bring people together in harmony. It is perhaps too easy to replace the phrase users personal information with natural resources here, though Varas scathing critique of the tech sphere also reminds us that what counts as a resource is as relentlessly mineable as the resources themselves.

Yet The Immortal King Rao charts a narrative whereby both King and Athena find themselves on the outer edges of the society that the Coconut Corporation helped to build. King undergoes a highly publicized fall from grace, whereas Athena finds herself aiding the Exes, a radical group that lives literally off the Algorithms grid. Moving back and forth between Kings childhood, his rise to prominence, and Athenas present, The Immortal King Rao meditates on the complex culpability of individual actors within wide and pernicious systems. The intricate, global nature of the plot only serves to underscore its core conceit: an endemic hunger for innovation is the through-line between early plantation economies and an utterly privatized world. At the end of this historical continuum is an unlivable but not unrecognizable world. The novel imagines a world where a descendent of Dalit coconut farmers finds himself at the height of technological and global power and where his daughter finds herself living in an anarchist commune bent on the destruction of everything her father built.

As such, The Immortal King Rao is not a neat allegory of environmental racism or the corrupting influence of power. However, it nevertheless insists that we pay attention to relationships between seemingly diverse commodities (coconuts on the one hand, computers on the other), and how difficult it is to wrench them from systems bent on extracting their value. Moreover, Vara adeptly threads her story with a complicated and never saccharine story of love; between father and daughter, husband and wife, and, significantly, a coalition of renegades who dream that another kind of life is possible. At just under 400 pages, The Immortal King Raos expansive reach might feel a little constrained by its length. Or, perhaps, it deftly mirrors the turbulence of its narrators mind. Athena, after all, isnt only faced with the task of digesting her fathers entire conscious experience she is up against a history of extraction so wide-reaching that it is almost impossible to know where to begin. But this is the story that, from her prison cell, she has to try her best to tell, in hopes that it might lead to her (and, maybe, humanitys) salvation.

Three top technologies taking healthcare by storm – Kalkine Media

Posted: at 3:57 am

Technology development in healthcare is a multistage process involving the invention, technical modification or evaluation of a new medical device, clinical procedure, or biological/chemical agent.

Earlier, health issues were addressed only when they had developed enough to cause trouble. But nowadays, the development and increased accessibility of medical technology has given patients a chance to treat diseases at their onset, leading to a higher chance of successful recovery.

In this article, we are going to discuss three major advancements in the medical technology sector.

mRNA technology

Messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) is a single-stranded RNA involved in protein synthesis. It transports the genetic information that is obtained from DNA.

Recently, mRNA technology has gained attention because it is a component of the new Covid-19 vaccinations. mRNA vaccines function by giving cells the genetic information they need to build viral proteins, which the body can then use to mount an immunological defence.

These vaccines provide an alternative to the conventional vaccine strategy because of their high effectiveness, capacity for rapid development, and potential for low production costs.

Since almost any protein may be encoded by mRNA, the same fundamental technology might also enable the development of a wide range of treatments by inducing a drug-like reaction in the body. Numerous protein-based medications, such as antibodies produced outside the body, have shown to be very efficient and expensive. Therefore, by adopting mRNA technology, the time and cost of development could be reduced by making the human body responsible for protein production.

Neurotechnology

Neurotechnology refers to a combination of techniques and tools that permit a direct link between technological elements and the neurological system. Electrodes, computers, or intelligent prosthetics are examples of these technical components. They are intended to either "translate" brain signals into technical control orders by recording them, or to alter brain activity by delivering electrical or visual stimulation.

While it seems exciting from a therapeutic standpoint, neurotechnology is still up for debate. It raises concerns about privacy and data rights. While its potential uses are not yet fully understood, neurotechnology is anticipated to increase significantly in the global healthcare market over the next several years as neurological illnesses and conditions continue to be discovered and diagnosed.

Healthcare wearables

For improved care of patients with chronic illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and neurological problems, continuous and real-time monitoring is crucial. Thanks to the development of medical wearable technology, this is now conceivable to some extent.

Devices worn on the body or clothing are referred to as wearable devices. They are made up of a transducer and a target receptor. The target analyte (a chemical substance that is the subject of chemical analysis) is recognised by a receptor, which then reacts accordingly.

Smartwatches are one of the most widespread wearable devices in the healthcare industry, with major tech giants such as Apple, Google, and Samsung, all having a share in the smartwatch market. Smartwatches have the potential to record blood pressure, sleep patterns, electrocardiograms, and oxygen saturation, depending on the model of the watch.

It is time to leverage technology to correct the challenges people have with their minds: Antano Solar, CE.. – ETHealthWorld

Posted: at 3:57 am

Shahid Akhter, editor, ETHealthworld, spoke to Antano Solar, CEO, Antano & Harini Legacy Accelerators, to find out the advancements in neurotechnology that can help to fast-track personal evolution.

Neuro Tech: Advancements in emotional wellnessThere are a lot of interesting things that are happening in neurotech that can enable solutions that weren't accessible earlier, from feeling emotionally different from within to having access to a remote arm or to develop physical abilities that were impossible. There's a lot that's happening in neurotech. So over the last ten years, scientists have been able to figure out how does the brain communicate within itself and thereby how to tap into that signaling system and leverage that with external devices. And there are both invasive and non-invasive methods.

There are noninvasive methods that can stimulate what's happening in the brain, but there are also advancements when it comes to nanoscience and the interfacing with the brain. Initially, it was thought that this technology will be helpful for people who are paralyzed and for controlling other functions of the body. But the latest advancement shows that these can also be used for emotional wellness, because the entire world is recognizing that the next big advancement in science is not going to be about how to correct the body, but it's going to be about how to correct the mind. And as it happened in history all over again, humankind is turning towards machines and technology to see how that can be leveraged to correct the challenges people have with their mind, with their emotions, with their feelings. Because at some level, these are involuntary functions.

Every emotion that we have is there for a purpose, from feeling lonely to feeling low. Sometimes there's a thin line between fear and being cautious. There's a thin line between being intuitive about danger versus being suspicious. And I think that's wisdom. Now, when you isolate wisdom and you just attach a machine that would just make you confident, that just makes you happy, then what you're really doing is you're stripping out the body's natural mechanism for being intuitive about what to feel at any given point in time. So at every decade, every century, there is something that is unique for the human race to actually thrive. For there was a point in time and it was overcoming slavery and getting freedom.

They have to have a larger ecosystem of people. Now, all of these can take decades to happen, but with the right set of capabilities and personal transformation, anyone can launch a legacy within two to three years. Even if in the regular track that have taken up 20 or 30 years, it can be time compressed to two or three years excellence. Installation specialists have this capability to take an individual into a very different altered state with their eyes open, while they're still awake, where the individual has access to some of the involuntary functions that they wouldn't otherwise have in their waking state. And from that space, certain activities, games, or even a form of communication or metaphoric storytelling can have a direct impact on the deep autonomous system.

When we are working on conditions like autoimmune, we also take what I call personal evolution log, where we record a person a year before they come, from the time we recorded a person when they come, and a year after that, so that they can compare the difference in what's happening to them across a period of time. Because with most things that concerns the body, when a change happens, you can see it. But the better thing is what it continues to do in the months and years to come. So that's why all our methods of validation include immediate testing as well as long term documentation.

Antano & Harini Legacy AcceleratorMy fascination is artificial intelligence, data and systems, and helping people understand technology. But I was also parallely fascinated about the mind. And I always found the latest technology available to help people solve challenges with their mind, with their emotions and their feelings. But it was not even possible for me to conceive at that point in time that helping someone have a relaxed mind or helping someone to think clearly can have a physical benefit. Until one day, when someone in the US, who met with an accident approached me asking that doctors have told him that he's going to be quadriplegic and he cannot move anything below his shoulders for the rest of his life because there's a C Five fracture and a nervous cut and is there any way that I could help him regain movements. And I was like, how is it even possible that he's asking me something like this? But being who I am, I knew that just because I didn't know how to and just because medical science at that point didn't know how to doesn't mean that there is no choice for him.

Neuro Tech: Body backup mechanismThere must be some way. So I started exploring all possibilities. I wrote from the most advanced societies in medical science to all alternate therapies. And I started searching for is there someone who would have a solution for this young man who is an IED graduate and his life has just turned upside down? And that's when I discovered and it was John Grinder.

He mentored me. And I found that there are some people for whom naturally, the body has a backup mechanism. A lot of people who get paralyzed stay paralyzed for the rest of their life. But there are some people for whom naturally, the backup system in the neurology activates itself. So I started exploring.

There must be a connection between why that backup system works for some people and why for others, it doesn't work. And I stumbled upon the ability of the neurology to do something called as plasticity to take the nerves that are specifically designed for one function to learn and do the functioning of the neighboring nerves. And we were able to figure out that if you help someone with internal involuntary responses in their thinking and their emotions, and also if you're able to give accurate biofeedback to the neurology, it increases the possibility for the body to selfactivate the backup mechanisms that we are born and gifted with.

Elon Musks $44 billion bid for Twitter (NYSE:) has attracted an investor close to a Russian tycoon, Bloomberg News reports.

Vy Capital, a Dubai-based investment firm that manages over $5 billion in assets whose single-page website shows no address nor contact details, has committed $700 million to help Tesla's (NASDAQ:) Musk finance his takeover of Twitter.

The investment makes Vy Capital the third biggest outside backer involved in the deal, alongside Sequoia Capital and Larry Ellison.

The firm was founded by Alexander Tamas, a German national who was previously linked with Russian-Israeli tycoon Yuri Milner. If the deal with Twitter goes through, Vy Capital will have financed one of the largest ever leveraged acquisitions, marking a remarkable achievement for a firm with a very small number of public records that display its funding sources.

Vy Capital also invested in Musks Boring Company and digital asset exchange ErisX, according to PitchBook. Moreover, the firms founder Tamas also backed Musks spacecraft engineering company SpaceX and neurotechnology company Neuralink, suggesting that the investor has been deepening his relationship with Musk.

In 2020, a document from the blank-check company Vy Global Growth showed that Vy Capital manages over $2 billion in assets, with that number more than doubling since.
