Regarding the possibility of enhanced gambling all over Florida: no, no, no!

So far, gambling has legally been with the Seminole Tribe in one location. It has appeared to satisfy those who choose to gamble. And it has been just one aspect of many choices of entertainments for adults who visit as well as adults who live in Florida. But not for families with children.

Our state government needs to protect and stabilize all natural features of our beautiful, natural and unique state of Florida for all.

I'm living in the most dangerous time of my life - stupidity, ignorance and a lot of uneducated adults listen to the propaganda, lies and untrue stories spread by the news media. CNN seems to be the worst.

When we elect congressional members into office, they have no intention of thinking for themselves and representing the majority of the people. Is there a right or wrong vote on each bill? For the voters it seems quite simple. If it's good for all of America, the simple vote is yes.

Unfortunately we have voted into office more than 500 congressmen, Democrats and Republicans. Greed, power and money is their goal. The most unbelievable thing occurs, not one of them can vote for the people that elected them. It's a party vote only, all Democrat or all Republican.

We no longer have a people's government in Washington D.C. We have two Democratic Party leaders or two Republican Party leaders running our country. That makes it a one-party government, run as one government.

Can you think of a few other countries run by a single government - Cuba, Russia, Iran to name a few. Pray that our First Amendment can save us before it becomes eliminated.

Difficult for most to understand and nearly impossible to regulate, cryptocurrency makes money, as we know it, appear Jurassic in nature. Simply put, cryptocurrency is a form of payment that can be exchanged online for goods and services.

Over the last few years, Bitcoin has become a poster child for cryptocurrency, but according to CoinMarketCap.com, more than 10,000 different cryptocurrencies are traded publicly. In addition, the total value of all cryptocurrencies as of May 27, 2021, was more than $1.7 trillion.

Cryptocurrencies are primarily based on a decentralised technology known as blockchain with inherent encryption, distributed among users via the internet. This blockchain is an open, distributed ledger that records transactions in code and practice and operates like a chequebook distributed across countless computers worldwide. Transactions are recorded in blocks that are then linked together on a chain of previous cryptocurrency transactions.

I suppose its main selling point is that its a medium of exchange that is digital, encrypted and decentralised. What this means is that the system that runs and operates cryptocurrencies is not owned or controlled by a single entity, such as a government, bank, or company. Instead, the product is run and maintained using the computing power contributed by a global network of participants.

According to Forbes Advisor, unlike the US dollar or the TT dollar, there is no central authority that manages and maintains the value of a cryptocurrency. So essentially, cryptocurrency doesnt fall under the ambit of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. To users, this lack of control releases them from the bonds of capitalism and grants them the freedom to do anything that its value can buy. But to world leaders, this is a dance with death and can potentially unleash the wrath of Pandora if not adequately monitored.

Unregulated cryptocurrencies undermine the work already done by financial institutions globally to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, yet there are varying approaches on how cryptocurrency should be managed. For example, in Algeria, Egypt and Iran, there is a complete ban on its use, while other countries like Switzerland and Denmark are developing regulatory frameworks on taxation and money laundering to bring cryptocurrency under government control.

In the Caribbean, there are also varying views on the use of cryptocurrency. The Dominican Republic government banned the use of cryptocurrencies in transactions; but its use is still widespread, and citizens continued to use it at their own risk. In Antigua and Barbuda, the government is in the process of drafting laws to regulate Bitcoins. Surprisingly, data collected suggests that Antiguans are interested in using cryptocurrency to pay for public services, especially since its economy thrives on the tourism sector. Interestingly, officials believe that Bitcoin makes it easier to track transactions, which is very important, considering how many view this Caribbean country as a tax harbour.

In TT there are no laws governing cryptocurrency, and as a result, regulation proves to be near impossible. A joint statement issued by the Central Bank, Securities and Exchange Commission and the Finance Intelligence Unit highlighted that virtual currency is a digital representation of value that can be digitally traded and functions as a medium of exchange within a specified online community, but does not have legal tender status in Trinidad and Tobago and in most other jurisdictions Providers of virtual currencies are neither regulated nor supervised by the Authorities Virtual currencies tend to be volatile, and their value can fluctuate significantly. Further warnings have been given surrounding the potential for fraud and liquidity risks.

Technology, through cryptocurrency, has yet again granted us another dose of freedom, flexibility and control. But with a long list of foreseeable risks and the potential to dismantle the worlds economy, has technology pushed us to bite off way more than we could chew?

COUVA South MP Rudranath Indarsingh said he is not a gambling man, but if he were, "My Pick Two will be the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance."

Indarsingh made these statements during his contribution to debate on the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Bill, 2021.

Responding to an earlier contribution by Finance Minister Colm Imbert, Indarsingh said, "I take it with a pound of salt."

He claimed Imbert had become an expert at gambling over the last six years and had "gambled away the economy of Trinidad and Tobago."

Indarsingh said the bill was an act of desperation by Imbert to recoup revenues lost in that period.

He rejected Imbert's statement that apart from a few changes, the bill was the same one passed by the UNC-led People's Partnership coalition in May 2015.

"He's very good at twisting and manipulating words."

Indarsingh was subsequently cautioned by Speaker Bridgid Annisette-George, after accusing Imbert and Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi of having "the largest amount of hypocrisy" inside and outside of Parliament.

Nevertheless, recalling the bill was passed with amendments in the Senate on June 21, Indarsingh said, "All the objectives of this particular bill were really the vision of this side."

He said the gambling industry employs approximately 20,000 people, 75 per cent of them were women, the average number of dependents per worker was five and many single parents and young people out of school find jobs there.

Indarsingh questioned whether sufficient stakeholder consultation was done on the bill. After listing a few entities such as the Central Bank, Financial Intelligence Unit and the police, Indarsingh claimed Government treats stakeholders in society "with a level of disdain."

He also accused Imbert of creating confusion by telling bars they could only have a maximum of 20 low-level gaming machines on their premises.

"It is important for this to be clarified."

Indarsingh said this could have implications for the numbers of people who could be employed in these places and the revenues the state can earn from these businesses through taxation. He warned that severe unemployment could be one result, if matters such as these are not properly thought out.

Because theres a lack of legalized gambling in the Lone Star State, San Antonio residents and visitors will have a long trek if they want to play slots or hit the blackjack tables.

There is an electronic gaming-only casino located 149 miles away on the Mexican border, (more on that below).

There are also casino cruises available from Corpus Christi, however those wanting a real casino environment with real slots, video poker, table games, entertainment, nice restaurants and the like will have to venture 366 miles east, to Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Lake Charles, Louisiana

This industrial town in western Louisiana is home to three very nice Las Vegas-style casinos, and is a mecca for Texas gamblers. Its estimated that 80% of all visitors to Lake Charles are from Texas. The town is also home to the closest casinos to Houston.

The three casinos are the LAuberge, the Golden Nugget, and the Isle of Capri. All three offer thousands of slots, along with table games, plenty of bars and restaurants and entertainment options.

The LAuberge and Golden Nugget each have over 1,000 hotel rooms and over 1,600 slot machines. The two resorts are connect via a walkway and both have adjoining championship golf courses. Either of these two luxurious resorts would fit in perfectly on the Las Vegas Strip.

A drive from San Antonio to Lake Charles will take between 4 hours on the low end, up to six hours and a half hours if you get caught in bad Houston traffic.

At 341 miles from San Antonio, the WinStar World Resort & Casino on the Texas/Oklahoma border is just 5 miles further away than the Lake Charles casinos, however the drive takes longer.

The WinStar is the biggest casino in the United States.

According to Google Maps, your very best case scenario is a 4 hour and 40 minute drive, however its much more likely to be in the five to six hour drive range.

Although popular with many San Antonians, this casino doesnt have table games, nor do they have traditional slot machines and video poker machines. They have machines that look and sound like slots, however they are the class II style electronic bingo games allowed on some Indian casinos.

Google Maps estimates it takes (on average) between 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes to drive from downtown San Antonio to the Lucky Eagle Casino.

Built in 1996 and added onto in 2013, the casino hotel has bingo (five days a week), 3,000 electronic gaming machines, and no table games. There is, however a poker room.

The Lucky Eagle Poker Room spreads $1/2 to $5/10 no-limit holdem, as well as limit holdem games ranging from $3/6 up to $15/30. There are tournaments three days a week, as well as Bad Beat Jackpots.

The six-story hotel has 249 guest rooms. Six restaurants and a food cart dot the property, and the restaurant lineup includes Mexican (naturally), a steakhouse and a buffet. There are also three bars/lounges.

One final note, there are some Louisiana casinos on I-10 close to the Texas border that are closer to San Antonio than the Lake Charles casinos mentioned above, however all of these (including Delta Downs) are slot-only casinos. What do these gambling firms have in common?

They are all based in Asia and access the UK market via the white-label system.

A white-label is a site that is operated by someone other than the brand owner.

The companies set up UK-facing websites via firms in offshore jurisdictions such as Malta or the Isle of Man, and then apply to access the UK market via a white-label. This gives them the right to advertise to TV-watching consumers in Asia via Premier League football shirts.

Many of these firms advertise on UK shirts and stadium billboards in Chinese Mandarin, despite the fact that gambling is largely prohibited in China.

The UK Gambling Commission has admitted to concern that some of the companies running white-label websites may not have effective anti-money-laundering controls or carry out sufficient due diligence to ensure there are no links to criminal activity.

When The Athletic approached multiple football clubs earlier this year about their arrangements with white-label firms, virtually none could answer basic questions about the companies, such as what countries they are based in.

Dr James Noyes, senior fellow at the Social Market Foundation, said: We do not know enough about where these companies are based, who owns them or where their wealth comes from.

SportQuake is a sports marketing agency with offices in London, Madrid, Beijing and Hong Kong. It works with football clubs, national teams, competitions, leagues, players and media outlets to help brands secure sponsorship deals.

On its website, it mentions recent high-profile deals including between Cristiano Ronaldo and Garena, a mobile game, and FC Barcelona and FBS, the clubs official trading partner.

Last May The Athletic revealed how Bournemouth ended their deal early with M88 after the Gambling Commission opened an investigation into the firm. M88 is the Asian-facing arm of Mansion Group and previously sponsored Tottenham Hotspur. The north London club now have a deal with Fun88, which also sponsors Newcastle.

LoveBet sponsored Burnleys shirts for the last two seasons as well as having a deal with PSG. Earlier this year The Athletic revealed how the firm was ditched by Burnley mid-season.

Footballs relationship with gambling firms has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks following Norwich Citys deal with BK8 imploding after it emerged the firm was using sexualised content in some of their marketing. Norwich used Singapore-based Outlast Sports and Entertainment to broker their 5 million shirt sponsorship agreement.

BK8 said in a statement after the deal was terminated: We apologise for the social media content published by affiliates of BK8 which has caused offense, and have taken immediate steps to change the way we market the brand.

The UK government is undertaking a review into gambling laws that promises to look closely at white labels.

The Athletic approached SportQuake for comment and has repeatedly contacted the white-label gambling firms, via the relevant offshore intermediary firms, but has never received a response.

A spokesperson from the Gambling Commission said: Before we licence an operator we investigate the suitability of a company to hold a licence... We also require operators to tell us websites they will be using under their licence and this includes white label websites.

"We do not currently investigate marketing partners as part of an application, but we would if an issue was brought to our attention.

We expect licensees to ensure that when agreeing commercial deals with sports clubs, that all parties are aware of, and compliant with, the relevant advertising and sponsorship rules and regulations.

While the Suns have been rolling through two rounds, the loss of Chris Paul could prove to be a fatal blow to this team that, outside of Paul, really lacks a significant amount of playoff experience. The absence of Kawhi Leonard is still a massive blow for the Clippers, but they havent skipped a beat after beating the Jazz in back-to-back games without their star. With the emergence of Terance Mann in the starting lineup, the Clippers replace Leonard with another capable wing defender who can help guard Devin Booker, and while I dont fully trust them to win this game, I think the spread should be a bit tighter, leaving me favoring the Clippers with the points.

Atlanta Hawks at Philadelphia 76ers

The pick: Hawks +7.5 (-112)

Even though the Sixers stole Game 6 in Atlanta and were able to pull away in the fourth quarter, theyve shown zero reasons over the last four games to trust them with such a large spread. While they won the first two games by 16 points each, they went on to blow massive second-half leads in Games 3 and 4 while duking out a tight game for the majority of Game 6. The Hawks have also proven to be a much more capable opponent than many assumed. Trae Young has averaged 30.3 points and 11.0 assists, creating an entire offensive attack that the Sixers have struggled to stop. Even if the Hawks dont pull this game off, getting them with 7.5 points seems like an awesome value.

While Massachusetts lawmakers have been slow-walking proposals to legalize sports betting over the last three years, the revenue and jobs that the activity could provide have passed Massachusetts by, supporters told the Joint Committee on Economic Development on Thursday.

Legal sports betting has proliferated around the country, including in nearby states like Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York.

"This is something that's already happening in our state illegally or it's something that residents of our state are just going just over the border and taking care of and are participating in," said Plainville Select Board Chair Brian Kelly, whose town borders Rhode Island. "And it's nothing but a loss to our communities and our state in terms of revenue and job opportunities."

Up north, near the New Hampshire border, the story is the same, Ipswich Rep. Brad Hill said. For DraftKings, 30% of the company's sports bettors in New Hampshire over the last year have had Massachusetts addresses, a company official said.

"They're going right by our mom and pop stores, our restaurants, and they're staying in New Hampshire. They're shopping in New Hampshire and all that revenue, unfortunately, is going to New Hampshire, not Massachusetts," Hill said.

While 30 states have authorized gamblers to place legal bets on sports in some fashion, Massachusetts has been considering whether to similarly expand gambling here since the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2018 ruled that the nearly nationwide prohibition on sports wagering was unconstitutional and gave states the ability to legalize the activity. Meanwhile, illicit gambling continues to attract bettors in Massachusetts as well.

Sue O'Connell sat down with State Sen. Brendan Crighton, who is refiling a bill on Beacon Hill to legalize sports betting.

Massachusetts also has the DraftKings factor to consider -- the daily fantasy sports-turned-sports betting giant was founded in Watertown and keeps a headquarters in Boston. In his testimony Thursday, co-founder and CEO Jason Robins told the committee that he would like to expand his company in Massachusetts, but legally cannot base certain sports-betting employees here unless the activity is legal.

"We are hopeful to have the opportunity to operate in every state and, in order to do so, until Massachusetts authorizes sports betting, we will continue to locate certain teams and functions outside of the Commonwealth," he wrote in his prepared remarks. "We urge the legislature to move swiftly so that the Commonwealth can more quickly realize the economic benefits -- and consumers can realize the safeguards and protections -- of a robust, legal sports wagering market."

Supporters of legalizing sports betting are vocal about it and outright opposition to the idea is much more rare. Plenty of people and groups, though, oppose some sports betting -- like wagers on collegiate contests -- and others focus more on ensuring measures would be in place to mitigate the social and public health impacts of legal wagering without explicitly supporting or opposing its legalization.

Sports betting giant Draftkings unveiled its new headquarters Tuesday in Bostons Copley Square.

The overwhelming majority of the testimony heard during Thursday's committee hearing was in support of sports betting in one form or another, though not all supporters agreed on the fine details of their preferred bills. The first testimony from someone in direct opposition to sports betting did not come until the hearing was already five hours old.

Les Bernal, a former aide to former Massachusetts state senator and expanded gambling opponent Susan Tucker who now leads the national nonprofit Stop Predatory Gambling, told the committee that commercialized sports betting "would further extend the institutionalized racism of state-sanctioned gambling and how it has reconfigured Massachusetts's tax code to benefit whites at the expense of black and brown people."

Between the Massachusetts Lottery and legal casino gambling in the Bay State, players already lose $2 billion worth of personal wealth to state-sanctioned gambling each year, Bernal said. That works out to $5.5 million each day or $3,805 every minute. In the next five years, Massachusetts gamblers are on track to lose more than $10 billion on just the gambling opportunities that are currently available.

"A disproportionate amount of that $10 billion will be lost by the state's black and brown citizens, further intensifying the outflow of personal wealth from these communities who are already the most targeted by gambling operators," he wrote in his testimony.

The issue of racial equity in sports betting came up earlier in Thursday's hearing when Sen. Adam Gomez and Rep. Orlando Ramos pitched their bill, which would allow bars, restaurants and establishments like American Legion or VFW halls to offer sports betting to their customers via kiosks managed by licensed operators.

Ramos also likened the possible legalization of sports betting to the state's recent legalizations of casino gambling and non-medical marijuana and said Massachusetts "may have missed the boat" on ensuring those industries are diverse and inclusive.

"There are no Black- and brown-owned casinos in the commonwealth. And, despite the effort of many legislators, there are very few Black- and brown-owned marijuana businesses. That tells us that we have to be intentional in allowing Black and brown businesses a fair opportunity to benefit from this new multi-billion dollar industry," Ramos said. "Our bill allows for bars and restaurants to offer in-person betting. If we do not allow this provision into the final bill, it would monopolize sports betting to casinos and online apps, none of which, to my knowledge, are owned by Black and brown owners."

Thursday's hearing also brought back to the forefront an issue that was first debated more than two years ago -- whether Massachusetts should allow betting on college sports.

Among those who told the committee to shield college athletics from legal sports betting Thursday was Jerry York, the legendary Boston College men's ice hockey coach. York testified on behalf of the college, which strongly opposes collegiate betting.

"The players we work with are 18 to 22 and there's no benefit at all to them if this passes for colleges. I would strongly hope that, like Connecticut and Rhode Island and some of our neighboring states, that the colleges will be excluded from this bill," York said. "I think it'd be a huge Pandora's box of problems for us."

Sen. Brendan Crighton, who has filed sports betting bills this session and last, said it is imperative to allow collegiate betting -- though his own bill would not allow bets on Massachusetts colleges or universities "out of deference for our higher education institutions" -- if Massachusetts is truly going to lure people away from the existing illicit market.

"If we do not include college sports we will not be able to bring folks into the regulated market and away from their current platforms," he said.

Though there were 19 sports betting bills on the committee's agenda Thursday, it's very unlikely that any single one of them will advance in its current form as the vehicle of choice if or when the Legislature considers sports betting. Instead, the Economic Development Committee is more likely to assemble its own omnibus sports betting bill drawing aspects from the various different proposals, members said Thursday.

The bills differ when it comes to details like the tax rate, licensing fees and the number of possible betting licenses, but nearly all of the bills filed in Massachusetts would put sports betting under the auspices of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, require bettors be at least 21 years old and be physically present in Massachusetts, allow both in-person and mobile betting, and would include consumer safeguards to protect against problem gambling similar to those provisions put in place for casinos when Massachusetts expanded gaming in 2011.

On Wednesday, the Mass. Gaming Commission's Office of Research and Responsible Gaming published a white paper outlining its responsible gaming framework and mapping out how it could apply to sports wagering. The policy paper found that there was "no significant change in gambling participation on sports wagering from 2013 to 2019" in Massachusetts but noted an uptick in online gambling participation in 2016, when daily fantasy sports first became legal here.

The paper recommends that any sports betting legislation include "positive play" supports like automated budget alerts and "cool off" periods, restrict the use of multiple accounts and prohibit credit card use, limit where and how betting firms can advertise and commit to data reporting and research.

"Because sports wagering is predictive of concurrent and future problem gambling behavior, it is crucial for there to be measures to support safer levels of play and mitigate gambling-related harm," MGC Director of Research and Responsible Gaming Mark Vander Linden said.

Vander Linden's report also keyed off a study that was presented to gaming regulators earlier this year, which found that Massachusetts gamblers mostly know how and when to control their betting, but they generally have a medium or low level of understanding of the games they play and the risks that are inherent to them.

The study of 1,512 Massachusetts gamblers found two particular areas of focus for Massachusetts regulators and responsible gaming advocates: young players and people who play several types of games regularly.

Auditor Suzanne Bump also submitted testimony Thursday in which she did not take a position on the issue but encouraged lawmakers "to keep in mind the accountability mechanisms necessary to ensure integrity, security and consumer protection, and their cost, should you decide to move forward in this area."

The gaming commission itself remains neutral in the sports betting debate, but Executive Director Karen Wells told the committee Thursday that the commission is doing what it can now to prepare for the possibility that it is charged with regulating sports betting and to get ready to make betting a reality if or when it is legalized.

"We recognize that there is a significant interest in getting this going. I hear these representatives and senators talking about the finances and the money to the commonwealth, so we recognize there's a public interest in us getting going as soon as we can," she said.

In a June 9 Twitch stream, Adin managed to accidentally leak some private messages with Duelbits that suggested his group was getting paid around $1.6 million for gambling streams, which stunned many fans.

Now in his June 18 stream, Ludwig has shared what he thinks one of the key issues with some gambling streams are.

I think gambling as a whole is fine, he said, I think what can be problematic is sponsored gambling streams where its perceived that the person is gambling their own money, but theyre instead gambling money they were paid for.

Which is crazy, thats f**king nuts that hes making that amount of money, and the reason hes making that amount of money is one, because he has a giant user base, but two, because the casinos plan to make it back.

Ludwig then reminded viewers that he himself is also sponsored by Americas Cardroom for poker, and that hes sponsored to gamble on stream, but that any blackjack he does is always his own money.

It doesnt seem as though Ludwig is looking to reignite any drama with Adin, but it goes to show how many streamers are getting sponsored to gamble while live on stream.
