FSAI highlights incidents, recalls and fraud in its annual report – Food Safety News

Posted: October 19, 2022 at 3:39 pm

The number of food incidents rose this past year but recalls and sampling declined, according to the Food Safety Authority of Irelands (FSAI) annual report.

During 2021, 154 warnings about food being recalled or withdrawn from the market were issued, a slight decrease from 2020. FSAI also dealt with more incidents than the year before. The number of complaints from consumers about food or food premises, labelling, and allergens was higher than in 2020. Challenges included the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and limited resources.

Warnings included 119 food alerts and 35 allergen warnings. The principal reasons were due to the presence of foreign matter, pathogens such as Salmonella or Listeria, or chemical contaminants like ethylene oxide.

Incidents and fraudFSAI handled 724 food incidents, compared with 663 in 2020. A multi-agency task force was also created to assess the threat posed by cannabis edibles.

The FSAIs microbiological expertise helped the Health Service Executive and a company to resolve an issue with Salmonella contamination of dried soups and sauces.

From September to November this year, FSAI is doing a survey on the microbiological qualityof chilled and frozen coated poultry meat products intended to be eaten cooked for Salmonella.

Work is continuing on the first Irish Food Fraud Strategic Assessment (IFFSA). A total of 171 food fraud investigations were conducted in 2021, up from 76 the year before. FSAI was part of a Garda-led operation on the illegal slaughter of horses.

Food safety concerns identified during these probes led to the removal of more than 46,000 kilograms of food. One case resulted in 51 2,4- Dinitrophenol (DNP) capsules being taken off the market. Work with online platforms such as Facebook and Instagram led to 28 illegal food business pages being taken down.

Operation Opson results in 2021 included seizures of the DNP capsules, 384 kilograms of food of animal origin, and 2 kilograms of a seafood-type product. Ireland published five cases relating to food supplements and meat in the EU Commissions Administrative Assistance and Cooperation and Food Fraud Network database.

In 2020, FSAI co-founded the International Heads of Food Agencies Forum with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority and Food Standards Australia New Zealand as well as continuing its role as secretariat at the European Heads of Food Safety Agencies for 2020 to 2022.

Enforcement and samplingIn 2021, there were 1,727 more food business operators in Ireland compared with 2020. There was a decline from 2019 to 2021 in inspections carried out but the figure went up from 2020.

Food inspectors served businesses with 47 closure orders, two improvement orders and 10 prohibition orders, and took 10 prosecutions against companies. Prosecutions doubled and closure orders also increased from 2020 when some premises were shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic but such orders were still below 2019 levels.

Types of recurring issues were poor cleaning and sanitation of premises; poor personal hygiene; lack of running water; inadequate handwashing facilities; incorrect food storage; lack of, or an ineffective, pest control program; structural problems from a lack of maintenance; and lack of, or an inadequate, food safety management system.

One prosecution involved Arrabawn Co-Operative Society, which was convicted and fined 40,000 ($39,200) on eight counts for breaches of food law at its liquid milk processing plant in Kilconnell, Co Galway in court in November 2021. An investigation found documents had been illegally forged or altered and then provided to customers, third-party auditors and to the FSAI and DAFM officers.

A number of food microbiology laboratories had to redirect staff and facilities to support testing of clinical samples for the COVID-19 virus, reducing their capacity to carry out official food controls.

In 2021, 49,658 samples were taken and tested compared with 50,261 in 2020. The decline from 56,755 in 2019 reflects the need to comply with social distancing requirements and premises being shut or not operating due to the pandemic, according to the report.

More than 3,414 consumer complaints were handled by the FSAIs advice line in 2021, with 36 percent relating to unfit food and 24 percent to poor hygiene standards.

The FoodNavigator Podcast: Mood food for mental wellbeing how can the industry capitalise? – FoodNavigator.com

Posted: at 3:39 pm

Consumers have always turned to food during uncertain times. But when we once turned to indulgent, nostalgic foods as a coping mechanism, theres a trend among consumers today to seek out more natural, healthier solutions andtrend watchers are noticing more food brands looking to innovate with botanicals, adaptogens and similar ingredients as more consumers take an interest in their mental wellbeing.

"What we're now seeing is that consumers are re-evaluating that. Instead they are turning to products with functional ingredients that are healthy that can help aid relaxation," saidMike Hughes, head of Research and Insights at FMCG Gurus.

Were also seeing changing attitudes to mental health with the stigma once attached to it disappearing. Its expected this fact will continue to fuel demand for food and beverage solutions for mood and mental wellbeing.

EY Global Consumer Senior Analyst Jon Copestake added there's scope for food companies to widen their offerings to appeal to customers seeking foods to improve their mood.

"We're seeing a lot more foods for allergies and gluten free but we're still seeing largely dietary foods focussed on calories we're not seeing particularly a huge amount of products that focus specifically on mental wellbeing, he said. What we're still seeing on supermarket shelves isn't substantively changing."

More ingredients companies are noticing the trend however and attempting to move fromtargeting the supplement industry to food formulators.

Spain-based Nektium for example has expanded its botanical ingredient portfolio into the food and beverage sector for the first time. The move means that its clinically researched, branded plant extracts are now available for use in a wide range of applications beyond supplements, including sports and energy drinks, dairy products, gummies, and cereal bars. Its portfolio includes the adaptogen Rhodiolife. This is extracted from the rhodiola plant, which grows in the cold Arctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, and which has been shown to help improve cognitive health such as improving anxiety and depression.

Marketing Manager Deborah Thoma told us: "Traditionally there was a clear line betweenthe supplement industry and the food and beverage industry. People want that supplementation of their diet but are not so eager on taking pills anymore."

Another company promoting a natural ingredient is Israeli biotech company Algatechnologies. It specialises in the commercial cultivation of microalgae. Microalgae is a rich source of astaxanthin, a red pigment, rich in antioxidants and which also causes the pink red colour in salmon.

From one type of micro-algae the company extracts the astaxanthin to make a powder product called AstaPure. And like Rhodiolife, AstaPure claims to have cognitive benefits such as improving stress. The company too hopes to target food and beverage formulators.

Away from specialist ingredients, is their evidence that people are turning to specialist diets the super trendy keto, paleo and flexitarian for example to help their mental wellbeing?

There is fascinating evidence emerging that the keto diet, for example, may help treat serious mental health disorders. A new clinical trial by James Cook University in Australia is investigating how the diet can affect conditions including bipolar disorder.

Keto is the worlds most Googled food related word, in 2019 and 2020 at least, and most people choose it to lose weight. But theres growing interest in its potential mental health benefits, said Andy Welch, who foundedSeriously Low Carbin 2019.

Typically, todays western diets lack a lot of the nutrients required to feed the body and look after our precious organs especially our brain. Introduce a keto diet, or aLow Carb Lifestyle (as I like to call it) and you essentially ditch many of the highly processed carbs and sugars that dominate Western lives, he said.An appreciation of healthy foods like leafy greens and the essential nutrients they offer such as superior brain health sits at the heart of keto thinking, namely how to help your body operate at the peak of its powers.

6 Ways to Find Relief from Your Menopause Symptoms – Health Essentials

Posted: at 3:39 pm

It might be a relief not to have a monthly period anymore, but that doesnt mean youre rolling out the red carpet to welcome the start of menopause.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

This stage in life, defined as 12 consecutive months without a period, can bring a slew of undesirable symptoms of its own. From hot flashes to hair loss and vaginal dryness to difficulty sleeping, menopause (and the lead-up to it, called perimenopause) may present a mixed bag of new issues.

The internet is full of rumored remedies for menopause. How do you decide whats right for you? Menopause specialist Pelin Batur, MD, weighs in on which ones to try, what to skip and when to see a healthcare provider.

When it comes to menopause, the word remedies is a bit of a misnomer. It insinuates that menopause is a condition that can be cured which simply isnt the case. This is a natural stage of life, and everyone with ovaries will, at some point, go through it. But there are some things you can do to lessen its impact, especially if youre facing just one or two relatively mild symptoms.

If your symptoms arent too bothersome, you may be able to make do with lifestyle changes like getting better sleep, Dr. Batur says.

She shares a few more tips that can help you regain a sense of control over menopauses impact on your body and your life.

Adopting a menopause-friendly diet can go a long way toward relieving vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, and other menopause symptoms like bone loss.

You should also cut back on:

If youre not sure what to start, try the Mediterranean diet, a heart-healthy, all-in-one meal plan that focuses on lean proteins, whole grains and plant-based foods. One study showed that people who followed this diet were 20% less likely to experience hot flashes and night sweats than those who didnt.

Like other aspects of menopause, vaginal dryness is caused by a decrease in hormone levels. It can make sex uncomfortable or even painful but over-the-counter products like vaginal lubricants can help. You apply them before sex to decrease friction and chafing.

More people use lubricants during sex than not, and we should normalize that, Dr. Batur says. Try a water-based lubricant, which is unlikely to cause irritation or, for a longer-lasting effect, you might prefer a silicone-based lubricant.

Vaginal moisturizers can also help. You apply them regularly to your vagina, just like you put moisturizer on your face every day, to treat and prevent dryness.

When to talk to your doctor: If you cant solve vaginal dryness on your own, your doctor can prescribe a vaginal hormonal cream, vaginal ring or suppository to help. Treatments taken by mouth are also available. You dont need to suffer, Dr. Batur says.

Night sweats are vasomotor symptoms that occur at night essentially hot flashes that happen while youre asleep, often waking you up from your slumber in a pool of sweat. They can be incredibly disruptive to the sleep cycle, Dr. Batur confirms.

To deal with night sweats:

When to talk to your doctor: Night sweats can be a symptom of other health issues, so its important to ask your doctor to weigh in. There are more than 50 hormones in our body, and symptoms like night sweats arent always related to menopause, Dr. Batur says.

Stress plays a role in menopause symptoms like hot flashes, sleeplessness and weight gain. And one study found that premenopausal people who struggle with anxiety were up to five times more likely to have hot flashes than their counterparts who learn to manage anxiety.

It stands to reason, then, that getting a handle on stress may help with your hot flashes.

The data is still weak, but it makes sense, from an overall health perspective, to try to minimize your stress by practicing deep breathing and mindfulness, Dr. Batur advises.

When to talk to your doctor: Even if you know you should relieve stress, its not always easy to do especially if youre dealing with depression or anxiety, to boot.

Studies show that even people with no history of PMS, postpartum depression or hormonal sensitivity can develop anxiety and depression during menopause, Dr. Batur says. So if youre struggling to get a handle on your mental health, talk to your healthcare provider to figure out the best course of action.

They may recommend cognitive behavioral therapy, a structured form of psychotherapy that targets stress and anxiety and has been shown to relieve vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes.

Its normal to lose thickness, shine and volume as you age. And estrogen loss can also cause hair loss and thinning, further diminishing the thick mane you once had.

Though hormone therapy may treat tress troubles, its not the only way. You dont necessarily have to be on hormone therapy for hair loss, Dr. Batur says, You can fight it with other topical over-the-counter products.

Rework your regular routine to be sure youre taking the best care of your aging hair:

When to talk to your doctor: If your hair thinning is severe, ask your doctor if its OK for you to take biotinor iron supplements, or to massage 5% minoxidil (Rogaine) into your scalp once a day. They may also want to check your thyroid, iron and vitamin D levels to be sure its really menopause at the root of your mane issues.

You cant see this symptom in action, but its a big one: Menopause has a negative effect on your bones.

Estrogen is very important for bone development and maintenance of bone density, Dr. Batur explains. After estrogen loss, theres a pretty rapid drop in bone density, especially within the first five years.

To help boost your bone health, incorporate calcium-rich foods (think Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and tofu with added calcium sulfate) and foods rich in vitamin D (like salmon and canned tuna) into your diet. But dont start any supplements without the all-clear from your healthcare provider.

When to talk to your doctor: You cant remedy bone loss on your own. If youre in menopause or suspect youre approaching it, speak with your doctor about when a bone density test will be needed.

The placebo effect suggests that in some cases, your mind can be as powerful as treatment itself. And when it comes to menopause, thats not necessarily a bad thing.

For example, data shows that acupuncture does not consistently improve menopause symptoms but if you feel like youre benefitting, it cant hurt, either.

The placebo effect for menopausal symptoms is quite high, around 40%, Dr. Batur says. It makes sense. If negative energy going to your brain can drive hot flashes, why cant positive energy and the power of positive thinking help relieve them?

Just be careful about supplements that claim to relieve menopause symptoms. Theyre not regulated or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may cause serious health problems. Speak with your doctor about any supplements youre considering, especially with respect to medication interactions and liver safety.

If your menopause symptoms become severe and start interfering with your everyday well-being say, you regularly wake up drenched from night sweats or your mood swings are unbearably miserable its time to check in with your healthcare provider.

When youre dealing with hormones, its important to be sure youre doing things safely, Dr. Batur says. If youre suffering, dont try to tackle things on your own. You really have to be an advocate for your health.

To learn more on this topic from Dr. Batur, listen to the Health Essentials Podcast episode What to Expect in Menopause. New episodes of the Health Essentials Podcast publish every Wednesday.

NutraCast: How amendments in the 2023 Farm Bill could shape the hemp industry – NutraIngredients-usa.com

Posted: at 3:39 pm

Medical Marijuana, Inc. CEO Blake Schroeder said including some language to regulate CBD in this next Farm Bill is much needed.

The respectable players in the industry just would like some guidance. The 2018 Farm Bill made clear that anything with less than .03% THC is completely legal for use in foods and food supplements. Well, where do those products fallare they foods? Are they food supplements? Is there some kind of a different category? These are clearly foods or dietary supplements and just some guidance in that respect would be a great win for the industry.

Medical Marijuana, Inc. sits on a roundtable with the US Hemp Authority, a group Schroeder said was very influential in the 2018 Farm Bill and said he expects the same for the next iteration.

One big change Schroeder hopes to see is the 0.3% THC limit go up to 1%.

We would love to see the limit go to 1%. First of all, we think we could provide way better products to people and second of all, we care about free access to cannabis to people. And the reason why we care about that is because we've seen clients of our company just have really, really tremendous results. And so we want to be able to provide the best high quality product possible for them. And we believe that if you can provide up to 1% THC, which we still think is non-psychoactive, it would be great for consumers, it'd be great for the industry and in the end, what we'd like to see is full cannabis, legalization, and and so, it'd be another step closer to that.

Although he doesnt expect it to be in the next Farm Bill, Schroeder and the US Hemp Authority would also like banking to be addressed.

Cannabis companies trying to do banking is still very, very tough and so that needs to open up a little bit. And hopefully if we get a little bit more clarity out of the Farm Bill, maybe more banks will become willing to do business with full-blown cannabis companies, said Schroeder.

If you want to get involved, the House and Senate agriculture committees are accepting feedback. The Senate Ag Committee has an online form and House Ag also has a form on its website.

South Korea starts year-long inspection of probiotics imported from US, Europe – NutraIngredients-Asia

Posted: at 3:39 pm

The inspection order, which is in effect from September 30 to September 29 next year, focuses on Health Functional Food (HFF) using probiotics as functional ingredients.

Firms impacted by the inspection order are US-based firms Lifebloom Corp, Essel Biopharm, Melaleuca, Denmark-based Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes, and Canada-based Natural Immix Health Limited.

According to the MFDS, the inspection order was enacted for imported food with high nonconformity or risk of harm, and to enhance the sense of responsibility for food safety and to secure the safety of imported food.

In particular, the aforementioned firms were selected due to repeated occurrence of nonconformity as a result of customs clearance and distribution stage inspection.

Last March, we reported that the MFDS had recalled two batches of probiotic capsules from Lifebloom and imported by Jinseong Holdings for failing inspection tests.

A business operator who intends to import or sell these products must request an inspection agency designated by the MFDS to inspect the product.

They will then need to submit the results to the local Food and Drug Administration in charge of import declaration at the time of import.

For products that do not need to undergo inspection order, the importers would have to self-declare whether the products confirm to MFDS standards and specifications when clearing the customs.

Aside from probiotics, the MFDS has also identified other foods and ingredients for the year-long inspection order.

Between September 2020 and August 2021, all imported Antarctic krill products, including supplements, had to be proven safe before they could be successfully imported into South Korea. This was to ensure that certain preservatives and solvents do not exceed the stated limits.

South Korea has one of the most robust probiotic market in the world.

According to the latest data from Lumina Intelligence, the country ranks third in terms of the number of consumers product review behind only China and the US.

Over 1.3 million of product reviews were captured for probiotics in South Korea last year. In 2020, 459k reviews were captured.

However, the probiotic market is largely dominated by local players such as Chong Kun Dang which is behind the brand Lacto-Fit, CJ Cheijedang with its brand Byo and IIdong Pharmaceuticals GQ Lab.

Rising Consumption of Vitamin C

Vitamin C consumption is increasing as a result of its ability to prevent and cure numerous health conditions such as scurvy, heal wounds, and enhance the immune system. This is a primary element driving the target market's growth. One of the factors fueling the target market's growth is the very low toxicity of vitamin C, which means that excessive ingestion has no negative effects.

Furthermore, rising urbanization, and increasing level of disposable income will drive market value growth. Also, growing awareness among people about the benefits associated with vitamin C and rising consumer inclination to processed foods will cushion the growth rate of vitamin C market. Another significant factor influencing the market's growth rate is the increasing number of working population.

Dietary supplements that are safe to take, which to avoid: experts – Insider

You likely don't need as many supplements as you think you do.

Healthy adults should prioritize eating balanced diets instead of scarfing down supplements, according to the country's top nutrition experts.

Some dietitians recommend people speak to a clinician before taking any nutritional supplements because overuse can lead to serious health complications.

Still, some supplements may be worth the hype depending on your needs.

The chart below breaks down which supplements healthy adults should stay away from, and which they might consider in certain circumstances. It's based on interviews with registered dietitians and doctors, and reviews of up-to-date research on dietary supplements.

The advice provided in this chart applies only to healthy adults. Pregnant or lactating people will likely require additional nutrients, and people who have certain health conditions or take specific medications might also be more prone to deficiencies.

Nutrition experts previously told Insider to talk to a doctor about deficiencies before taking supplements.

It's better to get vitamins and minerals through food rather than pills whenever possible, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Vitamins and minerals found in foods come with additional fiber and biochemicals that are "difficult to manufacture" in a supplement, Emma Laing a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, previously told Insider. Plus, eating a balanced diet has been shown to prevent chronic disease and help with weight management.

Many people may not even realize they are already consuming the daily allowance of vitamins and minerals through everyday foods like bread, tomatoes, peppers, and milk. For instance, Americans spend millions each year on high-dose vitamin C supplements even though only about 6% of Americans are deficient in the nutrient and studies show taking vitamin C supplements won't prevent a cold.

Still, there is merit to certain vitamins and supplements.

Dermatologists recommend using topical retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A, to increase skin cell turnover, improve discoloration, and plump the skin all ways to improve signs of aging. Numerous retinoid serums are available over-the-counter and via prescription.

Vegans, vegetarians, and others without access to animal products might consider taking vitamin B12, said Dr. Eduardo Villamor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan.

The nutrient is primarily found in animal products, and deficiencies in B12 can cause serious problems like anemia and nerve damage.

Sports nutritionists previously told Insider that creatine supplements can help build muscle. Research has not yet found serious health complications from adult melatonin overuse, though too much of the supplement can cause fatigue and mood change.

Research suggests zinc supplements may slightly reduce the length or symptoms of a cold when taken early, but Mayo Clinic still recommends consulting a doctor as too much of the mineral can damage the nervous system.

Many doctors caution against unsupervised supplementation because taking too many supplements can damage the body.

A man in Australia lost his ability to walk after taking 70 times the recommended amount of vitamin B6. A man in the UK went to the hospital after shedding 28 pounds in three months due to vitamin D overuse.

Iron supplements may contain more than 100% of your daily allowance, and taking too much iron can cause irreversible damage to the liver and brain. Some supplements can interact with prescription medicine, causing problems with the heart and the body's ability to clot blood.

A cardiologist who has seen a rise in heart problems stemming from herbal remedies told Insider she would never recommend a person take supplements without consulting a doctor.
