Ontario Brain Institute: The Transformative power of neurotechnology – TVO

The idea of a surgeon implanting electrodes deep into your brain or of a computer reading your thoughts may seem like something out of science fiction. But such technologies are increasingly part of our everyday reality and, while they raise moral and ethical questions, they offer hope to many with disabilities and neurological disorders.

Electrodes in the brain have been used to treat several debilitating illnesses, including Parkinsons disease and severe depression. And researchers are experimenting with brain-computer interfaces that could make it possible for people who have lost the ability to move to communicate with others and operate assistive devices, such as wheelchairs.
