MAINE (WBNG) -- Crews got to work early Thursday morning taking apart Binghamton's radar in order to get access to vital elements as part of an initiative to keep the radar operational for years to come.

"This is part of the service life extension program so they replace the pedestal, the moving parts and that will extend the life of the radar another twenty years if not more" explained Dave Nicosia, the Meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Binghamton.

Nicosia told 12 News, "It is really important for us as meteorologists so we can provide accurate warnings to the public. This radar is a gem here...This is part of our mission here is to maintain this radar for the general public...(and) warn them of severe weather."

Extending the lifespan of the radar is critical to this community as all of the radar data for the Twin Tiers comes from the site just down the road from the Greater Binghamton Airport. That includes the data that mobile apps use and along with different websites.

Officials from the NWS told 12 News the hope is to get the radar back up and operational by Nov. 3.
