Five Brilliant Books of Aussie Spec Fic – tor.com
Posted: August 23, 2022 at 1:09 am
I grew up watching Doctor Who, Star Wars, and reading Spec Fic. Anything I could get my hands on, if it had a dragon on the cover or a spaceship, I was there. Which back in those days (the Eighties) meant books from the UK or the US. When I discovered that there were people writing Spec Fic in Australia, it blew my mind. It made me think that maybe I could have a crack at it as well.
Australian Spec Fic was extremely hard to find growing up in the Eighties, but these days its everywhere, and its weird and wild and wonderful. Here are five of my favourites, old and new.
This world first collection of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers is incredible. Editor Mykaela Saunders is a Lebanese and Koori writer, of Dharug descent, and she has gathered together a truly impressive anthology of stories. This is a retrospective as well as a showcase of new writers including Alexis Wright, Evelyn Araleun, John Morrissey, Hannah Donnelly, and Samuel Wagan Watson. The depth and breadth of stories here is stunning. There are hauntings, pandemics, AIs, and hurt your-guts-with-laughter satire in these pages
This All Come Back Now sits at the heart of a wave of First Nations Spec Fic and is as important and vital as Dangerous Visions was for the New Wave in the late sixties.
Were just at the beginning of the beginning of addressing the great problems and inequities of this country stolen from the oldest storytelling cultures on earth. These stories are an incredible, wild, and angry ride, and I loved every one of them.
I dont think you can talk about contemporary Australian Spec Fic without talking about Claire G. Coleman. A Noongar woman who has charged onto the science fiction and literary scene. Her stories dont hold back their punches, and why should they?
Perhaps the biggest fantasy to come out of Australia is Australia itself. Terra Nullius tackles the lie at the heart of colonial Australia: that the island continent belonged to no-one and was an uncontested land. Of course, it wasnt (and remains so), but that we need to constantly be reminded of this shows how all-pervasive this mind-set is.
What begins as a classic tale of Settlers, and subjugated Natives, becomes something very different. The hot dry land that Clair Coleman depicts isnt at all what we think it is. Ive had people tell me this isnt SF, but thats only because they havent hit the moment when everything changes. The story twists and turns, and along the way it works the great magic of SF, bringing us the shock of the world were living in now. Like J.G Ballard once said: Earth is the alien planet.
If you want to understand contemporary Australia, or the notion of Australia as an insidious fiction, Claire Colemans work is a great place to start, and she has a new Spec Fic book out called Enclave. You cant go wrong with any of her writing.
Ghost Bird is a YA horror thriller, and a powerful depiction of growing up in a small, dusty country town. While not strictly Spec Fic, using depictions of slightly-altered traditional creatures to avoid misappropriation, it will appeal very much to Spec Fic readers. It has truly scary monsters, and some of the worst of them are people. The book is masterful in its evocation of place. The landscape lives and breathes. We feel its menace, and anger at trespass, as a visceral thing. The dream sequences in this book are heart in your throat great, and I dont think I have looked at a tawny frogmouth (the ghost bird of the title) quite the same ever since.
When Staceys twin sister Laney goes missing its up to Stacey to find her, navigating a world of terrifying dreams and mystery. Its one of the best books I have read in the last few years. A story of community and secrets. The book pulls you in from the start and it doesnt let up.
Lisa is a Wuilli woman from Eidsvold, Queensland, also descended from Wakka Wakka and Gooreng Gooreng nations. She also has a short story in This All Come Back Now.
I love her work, not least because it gets me looking under the couch just in case something is hiding in the shadows.
Margo Lanagan writes the most beautiful prose and uses it to describe the darkest of places.
Tender Morsels is a magical, powerful book about pain and healing, and motherhood and sisters, and boys turning into bears. Margo reworks fairy tales and makes them her own, her characters sing and grumble in utterly striking and unique voices that are, still, strangely familiar. This story riffs off the tale of Snow White and Rose Red, and its the kind of no-nonsense but wildly beautiful telling of a classic tale remade that is endlessly appealing.
It is arguably one of the great works of Australian Fantasy, and Margo one of our greatest writers. Her short story Singing My Sister Down still makes me cry when I think about it.
Theres been quite a bit of novel-length Urban Fantasy written about Brisbane (Ive even dabbled), but not so much science fiction. This is pure and tricksy science fiction. We follow the life of Liv through a series of five novellas, each exploring the impact of technology on sexuality, while the world heats and changes in the background. There is a VR suit that flips the story of two lovers, a consciousness uploaded into jellyfish, a synthetic child, and even a journey into love in a posthuman world.
Its dark in places, and confronting, but Krissy is too clever and their touch too light to make it grim. Krissys novels often skirt the line between realism and spec fic, but this remains my favourite.
It ends in a moment of warmth and transcendence that takes it to the upper level of books that explore not just what it is to be human, but what it is to live post-humanly (hmm, is that even a word?).
Its a genuine Science Fiction classic.
***
Of course, we have many other fine writers in Australia including Greg Egan, Sean Williams, Ellen van Neerven, Shelley Parker-Chan (the first Australian to be shortlisted for a Hugo for best novel), Angela Slatter, Ben Peek, Freya Marske, James Bradley, Alan Baxter, Marianne de Pierres, Tansy Rayner Roberts, Rowena Cory Daniells, Kathleen Jennings, Shaun Tan, Kaaron Warren, Cat Sparks, Grace Dugan, and I could go on.
Unlike those early days of my reading, if youve a hankering to check out some Australian Spec Fic youre spoiled for choice, I reckon.
Trent Jamieson is a multi-award winning Australian novelist and short story writer. He is the author of The Stone Road, the Death Works series, and the Nightbound Land duology. When hes not writing, Trent works as a bookseller at Avid Reader in Brisbane.

Elon Musk Spells Out 2 ‘Giant Kahunas’ He Hopes To Accomplish In 2022: ‘Will Require Insane Work By Many – Benzinga
Posted: at 1:08 am
The task is cut out for Tesla, Inc. TSLACEO Elon Musksteam, with the billionaire himself outlining the focus areas for the remainder of the year.
What Happened: The orbital launch of SpaceXs Starship reusable spacecraft and the wider release of Teslas full-self-driving software are the main goals for this year, Musk said on Twitter early Monday.
Although many other things are in the pipeline, these are the two giant kahunas, he said.
Will require insane work by many super talented people, but, if anyone can do it, they can, he said in a pep talk directed apparently at his employees. He also commended his workforce and said it is an honor to work with such awesome human beings."
Musk said in a separate tweet that the Neuralink progress update show & tell is scheduled for Oct. 31.
Separately, the entrepreneur expressed a wishto have a simplified Hyperloop demo tunnel between Austin, where Tesla is now headquartered, to San Antonino.
It is the fastest way to get between one downtown and another with known physics (and the Standard Model is proving quite resilient)1, he said.

Why Its Important: Musk announced Sunday a 25% bump up in the price of FSD, which is currently in beta testing. The price hike to $15,000 would take effect on Sept. 5 and this would mark the second upward adjustment for the year.
The FSD is seen by analysts as a major revenue earner for Tesla in the mid-to-long term.
Musk had said in early August that the Starship, which is being developed and tested at SpaceXs Boca Chica, Texas facility, will likely have a successful orbital flight between one and 12 months. The Starship is meant to transport both crew and cargo to the Earths orbit, the Moon, and Mars. NASA has chosen Starship for its Moon mission and Musk also harbors an ambitious goal of using the spacecraft to transport humans to Mars in a bid to make life multi-planetary.
Price Action:In premarket trading, Tesla shares were plunging 2.05% to $890, according to Benzinga Pro data.

Elon Musk actually lives in tiny 37k house as he jokes about buying Man United – The Mirror

Elon Musk captures the persona of an eccentric billionaire rather well, with the Tesla CEO recently admitting to living in a tiny $45,000 (37,000) home next to his rocket factory
Image: Getty Images)
Elon Musk recently opened up about where he lays his head at night, and it isnt the multi-million-dollar mansion that most would expect the worlds richest man to live in.
Instead, he makes do with a small three-bedroom property located right near his SpaceX rocket factory.
The Tesla CEO has certainly had his hands full this year as the billionaire has found himself caught in the middle of a lawsuit following the collapse of his Twitter buyout.
Wasting no time, he has now jokingly suggested buying another unexpected venture: Manchester United.
It comes as the team is battling setback after setback.
Image:
If we won the lottery tomorrow, many people would immediately go out and buy their dream home: a mansion, beachside pad, or city-centre penthouse.
Even though he is the worlds richest man, Elon spends most of his time in a house that cheaper than most luxury treehouses.
During an interview on the Full Send podcast, the Boring Company CEO said he bought a $45,000 (37,160) house, mainly due to its location in Boca Chica, Texas, which is within walking distance of his SpaceX factory.
The house that I bought actually costs less than whats in a Boxabl, Elon told the podcast. It cost like $45k or something, but Ive done a lot with the place.
Boxabls are tiny homes and a building system that can be built to almost any style of house, costing between $5,000 (4,100) and $50,000 (41,200).
Image:
The podcast host asked if the home is small, and Elon replied: Its small. Its very small. Its a tiny its a small, small house.
He added: "Its right next to the rocket factory, so I can just literally walk to the rocket factory, its like half a mile away.
Explaining the layout of the home, he continued: Its technically a three-bedroom, but it used to be a two-bedroom.
I converted the garage into a third bedroom.
Yeah, its like, friends of mine come and stay there and they cant believe Im staying in this house.
Asked if he likes living like that, he said: Yeah, if Im there by myself its fine.
It's worth noting that this is just one of his homes, as the billionaire has a small property empire.
He owns four mansions in Bel-Air, a pad in Brentwood, California, and another nearly 100-year-old mansion in San Jose.
Image:
Elon has once again got himself in hot water thanks to an irreverent tweet that was posted earlier this week.
The Neuralink CEO shared a tweet explaining his political preferences, stating: To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!
He replied, with a seemingly unrelated remark, he wrote: Also, Im buying Manchester United ur welcome.
The tweet received over 500,000 likes in less than 24 hours, with many social media users confused over the randomness of the post.
The account Tesla Owners Silicon Valley replied: Are you serious?
The billionaire replied: No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. Im not buying any sports teams.

Drake Celebrates Breaking The Beatles Record With Roulette – UPROXX
Posted: at 1:07 am
Yesterday, Drake topped another significant record by The Beatles. When the track Staying Alive by DJ Khaled with Drake and Lil Baby checked into the Billboard Hot 100 at the number five spot, it marked Drakes 30th Top 5 single on the chart, thus breaking the tie at the top he previously held with The Beatles at 29. So what did Drake do to celebrate the accomplishment? He went on a high-stakes gambling roulette run, of course!
Drake is a noted gambler who won big money betting on the Golden State Warriors this past NBA playoffs, scored over $1 million in Super Bowl bets, and then won and lost over $25 million playing video roulette with French Montana. His roulette bets have all been on the online cryptocurrency betting platform Stake, whom he partnered with this past March. So immediately following the news of his record-breaking hit, Drake posted a headline and the a video on Instagram of himself winning $5,130,000 million on a roulette play. His betting was livestreamed on Twitch, which is something he often does when hes betting big money, presumably to raise the profile of the Stake platform. Ok I broke my records for the month now me and Stake need you to do your thing Bitcoin, he commented on an Instagram.
Since the $5,130,000 is paid out in Bitcoin, Drake would stand to make even more if the price of the cryptocurrency shoots up. Hence him asking for Bitcoin to do your thing. He better hope that French Montana isnt around though

SkyCity offers vouchers, mocktail competitions, spin at roulette in its search for 500 staff – Stuff

SkyCity GM talent Rebecca Grover says the employment market is competitive.
Hospitality company SkyCity Entertainment is offering spot competitions, blindfold taste tests of food from its award-winning chefs, mocktail making, vouchers, and a spin at roulette as it showcases the hundreds of jobs on offer across its business in the face of a nationwide labour shortage.
The company, which operates Aucklands landmark SkyCity casino and tower, is hosting its first company-wide recruitment open day on site on Friday with on-the-spot job interviews.
Its trying to fill 499 vacancies across the group, more than double the usual 200 vacancies, with 337 job openings in Auckland alone.
Businesses across most industries are facing labour shortages after the normal movement of workers across the border was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
READ MORE:* Short staffing in Queenstown is costing millions as visitors leave with money unspent, and the rest of the country could face similar problems over summer * Employers struggling to fill jobs but are sector's poor pay and conditions to blame?* More than half of 2600 tourism jobs advertised attracted fewer than five applicants for each position as businesses struggle for staff
Thats pushed unemployment to a record low 3.2% and is holding back activity as companies reduce their hours and services to cope.
Its a pretty competitive field out there, especially for frontline staff, said SkyCitys general manager of talent Rebecca Grover.
We've had to make that decision not to open a few sites and to change the working hours of our restaurants until we know that we can fully service them in a way that is going to meet the expectations of our customers, but also of our people we need to make sure that we protect them so that we don't lose them through the back door.
STUFF
Restaurants, bars and cafes are helping each other out as the staffing shortage continues to upset rostas. Even friends and family are helping out, says Stuff senior feature writer Bess Manson who lent a hand herself.
SkyCity has operations in Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown, and Adelaide in Australia.
The company shrank its workforce earlier in the pandemic as business dried up. As of July, it employed 3900 people, including 2072 in Auckland and 1300 in Adelaide.
It has increased its pay rates to remain competitive, and salaries for the open day roles across gaming, hotels, and food and beverage, range from $46,800 to $59,280.
In a new initiative, all staff who work for the company for 12 months will receive the equivalent of the living wage, and it is looking to introduce more personalised flexible work options.
In today's market, we've got to make it as easy for people to work and live and strike that balance, she said.
As well as increasing pay, SkyCity is trying to make jobs more enriching and is investing in internal careers consultants and building a qualifications framework to support staff progression within the company, Grover said.
SkyCity already offers staff benefits such as $2.50 meals and discounts for its venues and services, and it is now looking at how it can leverage its buying power with suppliers to directly benefit staff, she said.
The companys operations cover about 16 different industries and while some parts of the workforce will always be transient, it is seeing an improvement in retention as a result of its efforts, she said.
Turnover in July averaged 3.3%, and the company has had 22.9% turnover since January.
That compares with average turnover of 38.6% for staff in the accommodation and food services industry in the first six months of 2020 cited in a Lawson Williams recruitment survey.

No on California Proposition 26: Poison pill provision will harm communities and workers – The San Diego Union-Tribune
Posted: at 1:07 am
Proposition 26 on the Nov. 8 ballot would allow in-person sports betting at tribal casinos and licensed racetracks, requiring the venues to make certain payments to the state, and also legalize roulette and dice games, such as craps, at tribal casinos. Contributions are flowing into this campaign; $73 million to supporters and $42.2 million to opponents so far. Below, two essays explore both sides of the issue.
Gunn is a member-at-large and former recording secretary for AFSCME District Council 36. She lives in Los Angeles County.
There is much more to Proposition 26 than sports betting. While proponents focus on the elements that expand gambling in California, including betting on college and professional sports, theyre misrepresenting a provision that hurts local communities. This is why the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) District Council 36 and AFSCME California, organizations representing millions of workers that serve taxpayers in local government, oppose Proposition 26.
First, Proposition 26 is anti-worker.
It is the only sports betting measure that has a provision that would reduce city revenues because of a poison pill provision that would allow limitless lawsuits to be filed against card rooms (with a carved-out exemption for tribal casinos). The way its written these lawsuits would force legitimate, highly-regulated businesses to close, even in instances where the Attorney General and Department of Justice have found they have not violated any law. For many cities, like Chula Vista and Oceanside, these businesses are the source of significant tax revenue that pays for critical resident services such as senior centers, homeless programs, parks and public safety.
The sole purpose of proponents including the poison-pill provision is to eliminate their competition, as they have a long history of unsuccessfully challenging the legality of certain games played in card rooms. In fact, they have sued in court four times and lost and lobbied the last seven California attorneys general with all, including now Vice President Kamala Harris and former Gov. Jerry Brown, finding that card rooms are lawfully operating. Now, the initiative proponents are attempting to bypass the existing judiciary and regulatory process to bury their competition in lawsuits.
Proposition 26 would destroy local businesses and the resulting loss in tax revenue will be devastating to many cities, particularly in communities of color. Due to this reality, the California Black Chamber of Commerce and the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce both oppose Proposition 26.
Whats worse, loss of local government tax revenue isnt theoretical. While tribal casinos remained open during pandemic lockdowns, card rooms were closed for over a year, and cities that depend on the tax revenue from these businesses were forced to lay off employees and cut community services for residents.
This experience is why the California Contract Cities Association and over 100 elected officials across the state oppose Proposition 26, including Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas. Theyre joined by nearly all major statewide veteran organizations and the San Diego Tax Fighters in opposition with similar concerns.
The other troubling piece of Proposition 26 is it allows four private horse-racing tracks to offer in-person sports betting only if they continue to offer live horse-racing. California voters should not be asked to bail out an industry that is losing customers because of its terrible record of animal safety that has led to more than 1,600 horse deaths in the state the last 10 years. Proposition 26s lifeline for horse-racing tracks doesnt even include basic requirements for enhancing animal safety or hiring more veterinarians and as a result more horses will suffer and die. This is why many animal advocacy organizations across the state are opposing Proposition 26, including the San Diego Humane Society.
The bottom line is that Proposition 26 would force card rooms out of business and result in a loss of thousands of jobs and $500 million in local and state tax revenue, some of which is used for public health, homelessness services, senior centers and after school programs. It would also perpetuate an industry whose inhumane treatment of horses doesnt deserve our support.
Are some of the concerns we have why only 29 out of the 110 federally recognized tribes in California are listed as supporting Proposition 26? We do not know their reasons for certain, but it is clear, Proposition 26 does not have support from many California tribes.
We urge San Diegans to join AFSCME Local 127, AFSCME District Council 36, AFSCME California, Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas and over 100 other elected officials, the 80-plus cities that are a part of the California Contract Cities Association, San Diego Tax Fighters, veterans, business organizations and the San Diego Humane Society in opposing Proposition 26 and voting no on this poison-pill initiative.

It’s Official! The Drake Curse Is Real As He Loses Almost Half A Mil On Bets After Head Kick That KO’d Kamaru Usman – The Shadow League
Posted: at 1:07 am
Here is a tip for anyone looking to make some side money betting on combat sports, wherever Aubrey Drake Graham puts his money, do the exact opposite. Over the weekend, the In My Feelings rapper lost big paper, to the sound of over $350,000 betting on UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards.
Although the popular forgone conclusion was that Usman would continue his blitzkrieg through the welterweight division and eliminate challenger Leon Edwards, the reverse happened with a massive fifth-round head kick that flattened Usman and transferred the welterweight title to Edwards.
For that gaffe, Drake lost his two separate wagers on Kamaru Usman totaling $200,000. However, that wasnt the only bet Drake placed on the Octagon, as he placed a massive wager on former feathewrweight champion Jose Aldo to take down his opponent Merab Dvalishvili at the tune of almost $240,000.
For those keeping score, that is just shy of half a million Drake risked on the mixed martial arts version of Game of Thrones. Fans are wondering why he continues to think he knows the sport because as the losses keep piling up you can hear the echo of the late great former boxing champion and trainer of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Roger Mayweather saying, you dont know sh*t about (insert) mixed martial arts.
In March, the pop culture star lost $275,000 betting on Jorge Gamebred Masvidal against his polarizing nemesis Colby Chaos Covington at UFC 272. When he won, Covington couldnt wait to tell Drake how he felt about betting against him.
Lets talk about all the money Drake lost tonight, Covington said at the postfight press conference. He needs to go back to selling those sh-tty albums to get back the money. Drake you suck at sports betting, go back to your sh-tty little albums and rapping.
So is it time to christen Drakes penchant to pick losers as the official Drake curse, a la the Kardashian persuasion? Probably so, as just like athletes who align themselves with the reality stars suffer great professional setbacks, it seems that Drakes betting hand is like a pimp hand slapping them into unconsciousness or at least their pro record further into the L column.
However, the recording artist does a little better in the football arena. He reportedly bet $1.25 million across a few 2022 Super Bowl lines. He bet that the Los Angeles Rams would win and that his guy, Odell Beckham Jr., would score a touchdown. That happened in the showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Drake is a celebrity whale, professional sports bettor Bill Krackomberger told The New York Post. Hes one of the most in-demand gamblers by casino marketing departments. I saw him at Aria and he was betting $200,000 a spin at roulette; his play is worthy of $100,000 in promotional chips to walk in the door.
Now that Drake has been placing bets on the house that Nick Saban built, the Alabama football program better light some sage and say a prayer because Drake also has them in his betting sights.
