On rare occasions, the house doesnt win. After Star Entertainment banned two gamblers accused of cheating, a judge reversed that decision. He ordered the Australian casino operator to lift its ban.

ABC News reported yesterday that Mark Timothy Grant and Nathan Trent Anderson are no longer on Stars blacklist. That doesnt mean the operator wont keep its eye on them. But it means it cant prevent them from visiting its casinos.

Grant, a professional gambler, and his friend became enemies of Star in 2018 over a practice that some argue is simply using the tools available to them. They were taking advantage of sloppy dealers and card flaws to gain an edge at the tables, something which the operator took offense with.

In March 2018, Star banned the pair after it determined that they used edge sorting, the same type of activity that caused poker great Phil Ivey grief a decade ago. Grant and Anderson, as did Ivey, learned to identify flaws in the cards to their advantage.

By recognizing mistakes in the cards (manufacturer defects or imperfections), players can then determine likely outcomes. For Grant and Anderson, playing Pontoon, a version of Spanish Blackjack, they could determine what cards would follow when the dealer dealt them.

When Star discovered that the two were winning too much, it cut them off. Star argued that edge sorting violates gaming laws since it involves dishonest actions.

Two years later, Grant and Anderson filed a complaint in Queensland for the court to overturn the ban. The grievance finally made its way through the system and found resolution last week.

If the casino staff had been competent, the gamblers would have never had an advantage, according to Grant. In addition, the casino used cards supplied by card manufacturer Angel, which it knew had flaws.

I find that the conduct of Mr. Grant or Mr. Anderson did not involve any form of dishonesty, involving lying, cheating, stealing or fraud by the ordinary meaning of the word, or that they were not honest, said the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal judge.

While the judge recognized that Grant and Anderson may have employed edge sorting to beat the house, they did nothing illegal. Instead, they made the best of all available information to determine what decisions to make at the gaming tables.

The objective in Spanish Blackjack is the same as in standard blackjack. However, the game uses six decks of cards (some variations call for four or eight) in a single shoe, with the 10s of all suits removed. The goal is the same, though, to get 21 or as close to it as possible without going over, while beating the house. Hitting 21 is an automatic win, regardless of the dealers card total.

In general, Australian Pontoon, a localized version of Spanish Blackjack mostly found in Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore, offers a lower house edge. As such, Grant and Anderson were already working with an advantage at the table as soon as they sat down.

Then, included in the complaint was information regarding the cards in play. Some 33% had flaws, with only 13% of those cards having a high value. However, as the court acknowledged, there was still no way even with edge sorting to know the actual value.

Therefore, the gamblers didnt have a huge advantage over the house. Grant could only make logical assumptions about which cards may follow. That made Stars argument that the two had cheated more flawed than the cards themselves. As a result, the judge ordered the operator to lift its ban on the gamblers.

State gambling regulators now hold the cards in Chicagos casino game.

Ballys Corporation on Wednesday filed its application with the Illinois Gaming Board seeking approval of its plan for a $1.7 billion riverfront casino-resort at Chicago Avenue and Halsted Street.

Its the latest step toward breaking ground on the massive entertainment complex in an already congested River West corridor, a plan Mayor Lori Lightfoot signed off on and pushed through the City Council in May. The project still needs approval from the Chicago Plan Commission.

The city is banking on the Rhode Island-based gambling company to obtain both green lights in time to start taking bets at a temporary casino installed at the landmark Medinah Temple in nearby River North as early as next summer but that timeline could be a long shot.

The 2019 state law that created the Chicago casino license and five others across Illinois gives the Gaming Board up to a year to review Ballys application, with the possibility of an extension beyond that.

State regulators typically have taken at least that long to vet Illinois other new casino applicants. More than two years elapsed from the time partners in the Hard Rock Casino Rockford applied for Gaming Board approval until they launched a temporary casino last fall.

Thats the only new casino from the 2019 expansion to start taking bets, though a temporary casino in Waukegan, run by Las Vegas-based Full House Resorts, is expected to open this fall.

Marcus Fruchter, the administrator of the chronically understaffed Gaming Board, has blamed pandemic delays for the lengthy review timetable, as well as a competitive bidding process for the suburban license that further drew out the licensing saga.

But some Wall Street experts have questioned whether the company will be able to deliver on the ambitious project, which also calls for a hotel, a 3,000-seat theater, a Riverwalk extension, an outdoor park and a music venue, among other amenities.

Fitch Ratings downgraded its outlook on Ballys to negative earlier this summer, citing the execution risk and rigorous opening timeline for the Chicago casino project.

Some vocal River North residents opposed to the project are also calling for major changes to the plan, though they are largely resigned to the likelihood that Ballys will be setting up shop soon.

Barring unforeseen developments, Ballys will be our neighbor and we want as positive and productive a relationship as possible for the good of all stakeholders, said Brian Israel, president of the River North Residents Association.

Ballys will have up to two years to operate the temporary casino earmarked for Medinah, with the possibility of a yearlong extension beyond that.

After nearly three months of the 68th season of racing at Casino Speedway, things are really starting to heat up.

Only three weeks of the regular season remain, with 6:30 programs the final two Sundays in August before the season track championships on Sunday, Sept. 4.

All six classes competed Sunday night late models, limited late models, modifieds, Midwest modifieds, street stocks and hornets. All six will compete again next Sunday with the limited late modelscurrently not scheduled to race on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Sunday's program featured the Advantage RVs Modified Tour Championship, which ended up being big nights for Dale Aames of Huron and Johnny Broking of Grand Rapids, Minn.

Aames won the $1,500 purse for winning the 40-lap feature. Broking placed fifth in the feature and won the overall tour championship. Aames' win was his second of the season at the speedway.

Chad Becker of Aberdeen (late models, 25 laps), Scott Hansen of Garden City (Midwest modifieds, 20 laps) and Adam VanDerostyne of Canby, Minn. (hornets, 10 laps) each won their fourth features of the season.

Other feature winners were Tony Croninger of Watertown (limited late models, 15 laps) and Andy Rossow of Florence (street stocks, 20 laps). Croninger's win was his third of the season. Rossow won for the second time.

There's some familiar faces sitting in control for season championships and one of those is Becker, who is in the driver's seat to win a fourth consecutive late model title. He holds a 109-point leader over fellow Aberdeen driver Josh Skorczewski.

The standings in the other divisions are much closer, especially in the limited late models division. Croninger's feature win pushed him to the top of the season standings. He leads fellow Watertown driver Doug Walsh by six points.

Other points leaders include Mike Nichols of Watertown in the Midwest modifieds, by 37 over Derek Rieck of Ortonville, Minn.; Adam VanDerostyne of Canby (Minn.) in the hornets, by 55 over Bradley Rossow of Florence; Tyler Peterson of Hickson (N.D.) in the modifieds, by 21 over Aames; and Maria Broksieck of Goodwin in the street stocks, by 34 over Jason Marko of Watertown.

Nichols is chasing his third-straight Midwest modifieds title and Peterson his third modifieds championship in four years. Broksieck is looking to continue an even-number year streak, having won street stock titles in 2018 and 2020. VanDerostyne is the defending hornets champion.

D.J. Tesch of Brandt won the first two limited late models titles at Casino Speedway, but the division will have a first-time champion this summer.
