Last Saturdays UFC 278 event featured one of the most shocking knockouts in UFC history, and considering the timing and circumstances, it may have been the most shocking KO ever. With just one minute left in the fight, welterweight title challenger Leon Edwards landed a devastating head kick knockout on champion Kamaru Usman to claim the title.

A DraftKings Sportsbook bettor took advantage of the shocking knockout by turning roughly $2 into over $100 by making this Same Game Parlay (SGP) on DraftKings Sportsbook:

Since Edwards won by knockout with 56 seconds left in the fifth round, the bettor cashed his bet at +6066 odds.

The knockout was among the most shocking ever for a variety of reasons. Usman entered UFC 278 on a massive hot streak and had recently entered the conversation for greatest welterweight of all time. Usman had gone 15-0 in the UFCincluding 6-0 in title fightsand was just one win shy of tying Anderson Silva for the longest win streak in UFC history with 16 straight wins.

Usman had dominated the 170-pound division so badly that there was talk of him moving up to light heavyweight (205 pounds) to challenge for the title in that weight class. There was also talk of Usman crossing over to boxing to fight superstar boxer Canelo Alvarez in order to give him a new challenge.

As a result, Usman entered UFC 278 as a substantial favorite, carrying a moneyline of -345 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Usman was also widely popular among the public, receiving 77% of the handle and 86% of the bets on DraftKings Sportsbook. Edwards by KO/TKO/DQ got just 6% of the handle and 4% of bets.

Edwards had a strong opening round and won Round 1 on all three of the judges scorecards, but Usman began to take over as the fight went on. Usman won Rounds 2, 3, and 4 on all three of the judges scorecards and appeared set to win Round 5 as well. Usman was just one minute away from cruising to another win in a weight class he had dominated, which amplified how shocking the knockout was. This would be similar to a powerhouse NFL team being up 35-10 with one minute left in the game yet somehow losing to the underdog.

The knockout was set up brilliantly by Edwards. Edwards, who was standing southpaw, had noticed that Usman was exiting his head towards Edwards left after parrying when Edwards threw his left straight. In an orthodox stance, an orthodox fighter must always be outside the lead leg of a southpaw, otherwise, the orthodox fighter risks sitting in the southpaws power range. Usman, who was standing orthodox, got caught inside of Edwards lead leg, which put him at risk to take the full force of a shot that Edwards threw from his left side.

To gain clearance to land the kick, Edwards threw a left hand down the middle, and as Usman reached to parry with his hands, Edwards followed up with a left head kick that Usman ducked his head directly into:

The combination of Usmans head movement into the kick along with the force of Edwards kick amplified the effect, and Usman was left laying on the ground brutally knocked out. The image below of a knocked-out Usman is eerie and terrifying:

The knockout was reminiscent of MMA legend Mirko Cro Cop, who landed such devastating left head kicks that the saying right leg hospital, left leg cemetery was coined.

Edwards post-fight speech was memorable, and he shouted Look at me now! to the audience over and over, which was a reference to how he came from nothing in Jamaica and molded himself into a UFC champion:

The UFC is expected to book an immediate rematch sometime next year, and there has been talk of the fight taking place at Wembley Stadium in London, which has a capacity of about 90,000. Edwards moved to England when he was nine years old and is only the second-ever UFC Champion from the UK.

How a Bettor Profited With a UFC Same Game Parlay on DraftKings Sportsbook - DraftKings Nation

Limits are a fact of life for sports bettors in every market across the world.

Well, nearly every market.

In Spain, operators cannot legally limit accounts simply because they are winning. That precedent was established in a court ruling against bet365 and Betfair in July 2021 andhas since been reaffirmed by other courts.

Spanish bookmakers must therefore offer house limits to everyone, regardless of their perceived sharpness. The effect has been dramatic and instantaneous.

In Q3 2021, Spanish books held 2.8%, per data from the regulator. In Q4, that fell even farther to 1.4% before bouncing back slightly to2.7% in Q1 2022.

Revenues, in turn, are getting crushed. Spanish sports betting revenues were down 58% year-on-year in Q4, then down 41% in Q1 this year.

There are other things going on in the market, including major advertising restrictions. But handle is still growing, suggestion the inability to limit is the major issue.

I have never seen anything like it in my life, said one exec from a Spain-facing sportsbook. We knew the problems we were having but those Q3 numbers showed it was everyone in the market. Everyone can have a bad World Cup, but this is something different.

The exec noted growing problems from linked accounts and beards. He said betting syndicates were controlling multiple accounts via Spanish students, then hitting niche markets simultaneously.

These guys are very clever, the exec said. They come in and place loads of football bets for 10 a pop, then you suddenly get 5,000 accounts hitting a Spanish second division game for the limit.

It is industrial-scale bots and arbitrageurs, mostly operated from outside the country. You can see it is fraudulent activity because an account will log in from Madrid, then place bets from Barcelona.

A Spanish sportsbook account is worth three to fives times more than a UK equivalent on the black market, an industry source said.

Operators are working on improving their geolocation and other security measures but the Spain-facing exec said it was a cat and mouse game where one loophole was closed and another exploited.

It is a full-on battle with criminal groups, the source said.

Operators can close accounts if they can prove fraudulent activity, but Spanish courts have generally favored Spanish citizens in these cases over foreign corporate bookmakers.

New data from the Spanish regulator (DGOJ) appears to back up the notion of fraudulent activity.

The DGOJ this month released player data from 2021, showing stakes from female gamblers were up a whopping 126% year-on-year. That is despite the number of female gamblers remaining almost the same.

Whats more, female gamblers as an entire cohort were profitable. Around 20% of all Spanish accounts posted a profit in 2021.

So what are the implications for US sports betting and other markets? For starters, the Spanish experience shows why operators limit in the first place; they need to make money.

Spain might also be the start of a consumer-friendly trend in markets around the world. Ireland is reportedly considering similar rules on betting limits, per Gambling Compliance.

In Canada, Covers senior strategist Adam Chernoff has been calling for consumer-friendly regulations in the nascent Ontario sports betting market. That includes:

Chernoff said earlier this year he was optimistic about consumer-friendly regs in the market.

This is the third country where Ive worked through betting regulation, and this was the first time someone at the regulator level was interested in player advocacy, Chernoff said.

Books might not like having to lay $100 on the hundreds of the derivatives they offer, but it should be less of an issue on core sports and markets. One compromise could see books having to lay bets to win $500 on main sports sides and totals from 10 am on the day of the game.

I dont see that being a bad thing at all, said one North-America facing sportsbook exec. Good books have to book those bets.

Indeed, an MBL might encourage books to invest in risk and trading if they no longer have the easy option of limiting. That may pay off in the long run, especially if US books want to beat out their offshore competitors.

Spain has shown that no limits at all make for an unsustainable market. But there is perhaps a middle ground where books can make money if they can kick out fraudulent players, while also offering a fair bet to genuine customers.

Lessons From Spain On What Happens Without Sportsbook Limits - Legal Sports Report

The odds at DraftKings Sportsbook for the American League Cy Young race have shifted quite a bit in recent weeks as Justin Verlander, Dylan Cease and Shane McClanahan have been battling it out for the prestigious pitching award. On Tuesday night, Verlander and Cease faced one another and had mixed results, both allowing three earned runs in a game that ended in a 4-3 White Sox victory. The game didnt appear to move the needle in either pitchers direction, but the odds have clearly been trending towards Verlander and Cease and away from McClanahan over the last few weeks. Here are the odds as of August 18:

Justin Verlander (Astros) -190

Dylan Cease (White Sox) +225

Shane McClanahan (Rays) +900

The AL Cy Young has appeared to be a two-horse race for much of the season, but it was Verlander and McClanahan as the clear favorites with Cease much further back for multiple months. Cease has been good all season. After allowing seven earned runs against the Red Sox on May 24, he had 14 consecutive starts in which he allowed one earned run or less, a streak that ended Tuesday against the Astros.

McClanahan was just as good, perhaps even better than Cease (with higher strikeout numbers) over that same timespan, but his last few starts have been far worse.

July 31 vs CLE: 4.1 IP, 7 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts

August 6 at DET: 6.1 IP, 6 hits, 4 runs, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts

August 13 vs BAL: 6.0 IP, 7 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts

Every pitcher is bound to give up runs sooner or later, but the most worrisome trend for McClanahan has been the lack of strikeouts. This is a pitcher who has averaged well above 10 strikeouts per nine innings for the last two seasons, but hes recorded just 10 total Ks in his last three starts against teams that arent exactly among the MLBs best offenses. On top of that, McClanahans velocity has been inconsistent in July and August compared to where it was for much of the year, and it makes sense given that this is now the first time in his career that McClanahan has topped 125 innings pitched majors and minors included.

Its certainly possible that McClanahan will regain his strength and rejoin the race, but for now, it appears as though the AL Cy Young will wind up in the hands of Cease or Verlander. Verlander is probably the rightful favorite with an ERA of just 1.95 and a 15-3 record something that voters still probably care about and the narratives around the 39-year-old starters resurgence after missing all of the 2021 season will probably help his case as well.

McClanahan is schedule to take the mound for the next time on Friday August 19 with a home matchup against the Royals, while Ceases next start should be Sunday August 21 at the Guardians. Verlanders next appearance figures to come either Monday August 22 in Atlanta or Tuesday August 23 at home against the Twins.

The most notable outcome from this group of bets was certainly the Rays-Yankees game, where the Rays took a 7-4 lead in the top of the 10th inning before conceding a walk-off grand slam to Josh Donaldson.

The Rays lost the game, but fortunately for this bettor, the parlay had the Rays run line instead of the moneyline, meaning they just had to cover the +1.5 run spread. This could have been a devastating loss had the Rays only led by one or two runs when Donaldson walked it off, but the parlay remained intact because of the three-run lead that turned into a one-run defeat.

A handful of these teams won their games easily, including the Blue Jays, Mariners, Padres and Cardinals, but most of the games in the parlay actually went down to the wire. The Pittsburgh and Cleveland games needed late inning rallies to get the job done, as the Red Sox led 5-2 over the Pirates heading into the ninth inning and scored three runs to push the game over its 8.5 total. The Guardians trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth against the Tigers, but scored six runs en route to an 8-4 win, fueled by a go-ahead blooper off the bat of Jose Ramirez.

The As and Rangers over bet (8.5) was looking bleak for a while, too, as Oakland led 4-1 going into the eighth inning, but the As put up three runs in the top of the inning with a pivotal two-run (and first career) home run from top prospect Shea Langaliers.

The Rangers then drew two consecutive walks to begin the bottom of the ninth before a Mark Mathias double pushed a run across the plate, sending the game over the total in the process.

Elsewhere in the parlay, the Mets held on for 9-7 win in Atlanta despite giving up two runs in the ninth inning and allowing the potential tying run to come up to the plate. The Dodgers, Astros and Diamondbacks all held on for narrow victories, as well, and this massive long shot became a reality for this lucky DraftKings Sportsbook bettor. The outcome at Yankee Stadium would have been sufficiently dramatic on its own, yet this bet wound up having a ton of excitement from several games across the league.

Miami Marlins at Oakland Athletics odds, picks and predictions - USA TODAY Sportsbook Wire

The battle between sportsbook operators and local tribes over sports betting legalization in California shows no signs of slowing down. With two primary sports betting initiatives on the November ballot, and little time left, the feud between these two initiatives continues to rise. The latest development has seen additional California cities and organizations announce their opposition to Proposition 26, which they described as a measure that "directly harms local communities."

There are two sports betting initiatives on the November ballot. Proposition 26,a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow retail sportsbooks at Indian casinos and state-licensed racetracks; and the sportsbooks-backed Proposition 27, which seeks to legalize online sports bettingwhile redirecting a percentage of tax revenue to address homelessness.

State cardrooms-backed group Opposition to Proposition 26 argues that the measure "weaponizes the Private Attorney General Act (PAGA), so it can be used against tribal casino operators legally-operating competition." The opposing side further argues that the measure seeks to grant tribal casinos a "near monopoly on all gaming in California" by adding exclusivity over roulette, craps, and sports wagering.

Newly announced cities and organizations opposing Prop 26 include local governments and elected officials, among them the City of Bellflower; and Luis Roa, Mayor, City of Hawaiian Gardens. Animal rights organizations have also moved to oppose the proposal, including Central Oregon Wild Horse Coalition; Front Range Equine Rescue; Paw Project; Return to Freedom; and Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center.

As for political organizations, the San Joaquin County Democratic Central Committee has also announced its opposition to the tribes-backed proposition. Business organization San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce also followed suit.

Opposers of Proposition 26 claim the proposed change in the State Constitution "allows tribal casinos to hire private trial lawyers and replace the role of the Attorney General to sue their non-tribal competitors. As a result, the measure puts more than 32,000 jobs, $1.6 billion in wages, and $5.5 billion in total economic impact at risk."

Local cardrooms have described Proposition 26 as a "poison pill,"as it would force them "out of business and result in a loss of $500 million in local tax revenue statewide." Prop 26, The California Sports Wagering Regulation and Unlawful Gaming Enforcement Act, is supported by a coalition of more than 50 California Indian tribes, led byPechanga.

Thursday's announcement of new cities and entities opposing Prop 26 adds to a list that already counts the California Contract Cities Association, Gateway Cities Council of Governments, Disabled American Veterans, California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Los Angeles County Business Federation, among others.

However, Prop 26 also has its supporters. "A large and growing coalition of Indian Tribes, social justice advocates, teachers, parents, homeless and mental health advocates, business, public safety, and labor leaders allstrongly oppose Prop 27,"Kathy Fairbanks, spokesperson for Yes on 26 and No on 27 campaigns, said earlier this week.

Prop 27 is also facing rejection from a number of parties. In addition to most tribes, the proposal is opposed by the advocacy group League of California Cities, which argues the amendment would jeopardize local tax revenues; and by Californias Democratic Party, which holds majorities in the legislature and occupies the governors office.

A group of leaders of California Democratic and Republicans in both the Senate and the Assembly also unveiled an anti-Prop 27 stance earlier this month, including Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, D-San Diego; Senate Minority Leader Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita; Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, D-Lakewood; Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher, R-Yuba City.

However,earlier this week, Prop 27 scored a major supporter after Major League Baseball (MLB)announced its support for the online betting plan, which is backed by a number of sports betting companies including DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Bally Bet,WynnBET,Barstool Sportsbook,andFanatics.

California ranks among one of the biggest prizes if a sports gambling ban is overturned.Chris Gove, an investor in the sports betting space and partner in consulting firmEilers & Krejcik Gaming, estimates that a mature,online sports betting market in California could generate as much as $3 billion in annual revenue. In comparison, industry trade publication VIXIO Gambling Compliance estimates retail-only sports betting would generate $356 million in annual gross revenueby the fifth year.
