NJ Sports Betting Scene Will Likely Expand Again In 2022 – Play NJ

Posted: at 8:44 am

Here we are in early July, and the NJ online sports betting count currently stands at 21 apps. Call it a temporary number for this constantly revolving door.

Remember, in 2022, weve already seen four brands cease operations with NJ bettors. Two of them, TwinSpires Sportsbookand theScore Bet, called it quits earlier this summer.

Two other NJ online sportsbooks, 888andResorts, stopped taking wagers to make room for newcomers.

There is a list of other brands, including a few not available in any other US jurisdiction, hoping to launch this year. Everybody wants a piece of the NFL betting action.

Yes, even in this fierce NJ market thats dominated by the likes of FanDuel,DraftKings, BetMGM,CaesarsandBarstool.

Here is a closer look at the list of companies looking to get a piece of the NJ online sports betting action.

As far as how many of them will actually launch in 2022, well set the line at 2.5 apps. Keep in mind the list below is in no particular order.

Back in February,Resorts Digital Gaming (the online arm of Resorts Atlantic City) sent out a press release announcing Resorts online sportsbook would stop taking bets. Here we are several months later, and there are still a lot of questions surrounding the decision.

Who is replacing Resorts (the online app, not the Atlantic City casino)?

The original announcement generated a little intrigue with the wording set to sign a deal that will allow an exciting sports betting brand, new to the USA.

As of last week, there is still no official word regarding who it is. PlayNJreached out to RDG for an update, but no additional details are available, at least publicly.

So since the case of the mystery sports betting partner remains unsolved, it seems unlikely this new brand will be ready for an NFL week 1 launch.

Sporttrade will make its US debut this year in the Garden State. According to PlayNJ sources, the app remains on target to launch for the beginning of football season.

Whether that will be August or September is TBD.

Whenever it happens, bettors will experience a different sports betting experience. Instead of taking the Philadelphia EaglesorNew York Giantsmoneyline, gamblers will trade sports bets like they would trade shares of DraftKings or Caesars Entertainment.

Being that NFL training camps will be opening later this month, expect more details regarding Sporttrade launch plans soon.

If we are looking at things from an NJ sports betting revenue perspective, the status of Bally Bet is pretty big. Its no secret that most NJ sports bets are placed via mobile devices.

Guess whichAtlantic Citycasino does not have a true NJ sports betting app operating under its license?

That would beBallys Atlantic City.

Right now, vie.gg an e-sports betting platform, is the lone skin operating under Ballys AC license.

TheBally Casinoapp is live, so expanding the offering with an NJ online sportsbook is the next logical step as it would create cross-selling opportunities. Now that the Bally Bet app is live in New York, New Jersey plans should be coming into focus.

If you visit the Fubo Sportsbook website, the words coming soon appear. The exact date, even the month, is not included.

However, a little digging on theNew Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement website may reveal that coming soon could mean in time for NFL and college football seasons. The most recent list of DGE petitions includes the following blurb:

Joint Petition of Harrahs Atlantic City Operating Company, LLC d/b/a Harrahs Resort Atlantic City, Caesars Interactive Entertainment New Jersey, LLC and Fubo Gaming Inc. for Permission to Conduct a Business Transaction.

This doesnt mean anything is happening this week or next. However, dont be surprised if details regarding Fubo Sportsbook testing period or soft launch are announced soon.

Continue checking PlayNJfor updates.

Like Sporttrade mentioned above,Prophet Exchangeis different as it will operate as a peer-to-peer sports betting exchange.

This start-up company has a market access partnership withCaesars Entertainment. The New Jersey and Indiana markets are first in line. Once its live, gamblers will set prices for others to bet on or make wagers based on prices currently available.

Other than basic information, Prophet Exchange has been relatively quiet publicly regarding its plans.

MaximBethas its market access deal in place with Caesars Entertainment. But it doesnt mean the brand will be available to NJ sports bettors anytime soon.

Actually, parent company Carousel Grouphas New Jersey on its list of future states. Plans call for Indiana, Iowa and Ontario launches to take place first. Should everything stay on schedule, New Jerseyans could be placing bets before 2022 ends.

Once MaximBet is available, count on seeing Nikki Minajpromos. Yes, the pop icon has signed with the company as an investor, advisor and global ambassador of the sports betting lifestyle brand.

This could be the most intriguing name out of all the brands mentioned here. For one, theBetFanaticsapp is not available in any market yet. At the same time,Fanaticsis a company people outside of the NJ sports betting world know extremely well.

The fact thatCEO Michael Rubinannounced onTwitter that he is selling his stake in the Philadelphia 76ers andNew Jersey Devils due to a soon-to-launch sports betting operation, means the BetFanatics plans are beyond rumors at this point.

If the reports of Fanatics buying Tipico Sportsbookturn out to be true, BetFanatics would only need to worry about rebranding and not building a platform from scratch. With Tipico already operating in NJ, a BetFanatics NJ launch could happen sooner rather than later, once the potential deal closes.

Well be watching this news closely.

Those who have been following NJ sports betting from the beginning, likely remember 888sport as one of the originals.

However, in December, parent company 888 Holdings made the decision to stop taking sports bets. Instead of exiting the market, the move is simply a step back, setting the stage for something bigger relaunching asSI Sportsbook.

When the news broke, John Atkinson, director of business development at 888 Holdings, confirmed the future plans:

As part of our strategic partnership with Sports Illustrated, we can confirm that we have closed 888sport.com in New Jersey as we prepare for SI Sportsbooks launch in the market.

As of now, Colorado remains the only market where the app is available. The Garden State being next seems like a logical next step.

Now that theScore Bet is no longer taking bets in New Jersey (and the entire country), Monmouth Parkhas an opening for a third online skin.

Caesars SportsbookandSugarHouse, the racetracks other two partners, are staying put. So dont expect Monmouths numbers to take a significant hit. PlayNJ analysts estimate that theScore Bet accounts for likely 0.5% of the market share.

Names likeBlueBet Sportsbook,Circa SportsandBetfredare just a few of the companies still sitting on the NJ online sportsbook sidelines. And none of them have announced NJ market access deals. Should one of them decide to take advantage of this opening, it will take time to finalize a deal and get through the regulatory process.

Sure, something could still happen later this year. However, next year seems more realistic.

Could head transplantation be a path to immortality? – The Irish Times

Posted: at 8:43 am

We have all heard of organ transplantations in medicine, notably in relation to the kidney or liver. But many may not have heard of transplanting the head of one person on to the body of another person who has been declared dead.

The whole-body/head transplantation procedure is under development by a team led by Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero and Chinese surgeon Xiaoping Ren, in a project called the Head Anastomosis Venture (HEAVEN). This project raises a host of philosophical, bioethical, social and political issues not encountered in conventional organ transplantations. This is discussed by M Cherry and R Fan in Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Vol 7, Issue 2, April 2022.

A whole-body/head transplantation involves severing the volunteers spinal chord and removing the head while preserving the blood vessels. The head is then attached to the donor body, whose head has been removed, fusing and stimulating the two spinal chords to create new functional nerve connections. Muscles and blood supply are also connected. The body and head must be cooled during the operation to prevent cellular damage from oxygen deprivation.

Some limited success in animal experiments has been reported using this procedure. A successful grafting of a monkey head on to a monkeys body was reported. Canavero and Ren also carried out a head transplant on a corpse in China in 2021. A full head swap between brain-dead organ donors is the next step. A Russian, Valery Spiridonov, who suffers from a muscle-wasting disease, volunteered to have his head transferred on to a healthy donor body, hoping this would provide a new lease of life. He recently opted out of the programme and the HEAVEN team is now seeking new volunteers.

A key philosophical question is who survives a whole-body/head transplantation, the donor of the head or the donor of the body? It would commonly be assumed, since the brain is the site of our thoughts and memories, that it is the donor of the head who survives. But surely the body plays some part in shaping personality? Also, we dont know how well the head would integrate with the new body or how long the post-transplant individual could maintain the identity of the head. That the question of who survives this procedure is philosophically undecided means that ethical criteria to guide research in this area cannot be drawn up.

Things get more complicated if, say, a mans head is transplanted on to a womans body. Is the new individual a man or a woman? And suppose he/she decides to have children, whose children are they? The male head will have decided to procreate but the children will be genetically related only to the female donor of the body. And, suppose the head donor and the body donor were each married (not to each other) at the time the transplantation was carried out, two individuals can now claim to be married to the post-transplant survivor.

Dr Sergio Canavero claims that modern medicine has solved problems that have traditionally dogged head transplant operations

Whole-body/head transplantations may be seen to offer a pathway to immortality. Say my head is transplanted on to a healthy young body that maintains my head until the body grows old and ineffective, at which time my head is transplanted on to a fresh young body, and this process continues indefinitely. One obvious problem is how to maintain my head in a healthy state over the long term. As we all know, the brain deteriorates with age, just like the rest of the body.

Canavero and Ren propose three reasons why the transplantation would be a good development life extension, cosmetic body swaps and gender reassignment. But swapping your body for cosmetic reasons is a flimsy justification for such a fraught procedure and there is no evidence that whole-body head/transplantation would reverse gender dysphoria.

Surgeons Canavero and Ren arrogantly dismiss bioethical objections to the HEAVEN project as mere opinion and seem to work on the crude utilitarian philosophical basis that if something can be made to work, its ethical. As the old surgeon joke goes: Whats the difference between God and a surgeon? Answer: God doesnt think hes a surgeon. Anyway, if you think whole-body/head transplantations will be widely available anytime soon, you are, I would think, getting ahead of yourself.

William Reville is an emeritus professor of biochemistry at UCC

Amarnath Yatrawhere spirituality and endurance overpower terror – Daijiworld.com

Posted: at 8:43 am

By Lt. Gen. Dr. Subrata Saha (retd)

New Delhi, Jul 13: The Amarnath shrine, located to the north of Pahalgam in Kashmir, and south of the Zojila Pass, gateway to Ladakh, is believed to be the holy spot where Lord Shiva took Samadhi (deep meditative contemplation leading to higher consciousness), before narrating the story of eternity and immortality to Goddess Parvati, hence the name Amarnath. The remote mountainous cave, tucked away from living beings, is at an altitude of 5,486 metres (13,000 ft).

According to legend, as Lord Shiva undertook the ascent, he progressively detached himself from the world around him. He left his Nandi (Sacred Bull) at Pahalgam (Bail gaon); at Chandanwari, he released the Moon from his Jata (hair); at the banks of Lake Sheshnag, he released the snakes; and at Mahagunas Parvat (Mahaganesh Hill), he chose to leave his son Ganesha behind. Finally, at Panjtarni, he detached himself from the five elements of Nature - Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Sky.

Having foregone all worldly attachments, Lord Shiva took Samadhi at the Amarnath Cave.

There are stories on the discovery of the Holy Cave. A shepherd named Buta Malik of Batkote village near Pahalgam, strayed into the area while grazing his sheep, where a Sadhu gave him a sack of coal. Upon reaching home, he discovered that the sack, in fact, contained gold. Overjoyed with his discovery, Buta Malik rushed back to thank the Sadhu, only to discover the cave at their meeting site. Yet another mythological legend has it that when Kashyap Rishi drained the water out of Kashmir valley, which was a vast lake, the cave and the lingam were discovered by Bhrigu Rishi.

Shri Amarnathji Yatra - mammoth administrative and security exercise

Legends arouse human imagination and the desire to seek blessings of Lord Shiva, driving many to undertake the arduous journey to the holy shrine of Shri Amarnathji. The number of pilgrims vary from 3 to 4 lakhs each year.

The Amarnath Cave can be accessed through two routes. The traditional one is from Pahalgam, touching holy places where Lord Shiva is believed to have detached from various elements of life - Chandanwari, Sheshnag, Mahagunas Parvat, Panjtarni. The Pahalgam route is 33 kms long, with a journey time of five days to and fro. The second route from Baltal is new and shorter, 18 kms from the roadhead, and the Yatra can be done in a day. The two routes meet at Sangam, for the final 3 km trek up to the Holy Cave.

The Amarnath cave is also accessible by helicopter from Neelgrath in the North and Pahalgam in the South to the helipad at Panjtarni, approximately 5 kms from the Holy Cave. This year (in 2022), helicopter services have been introduced from Srinagar to Neelgrath and Pahalgam, enabling pilgrims to finish the Yatra in one day.

Management of the yatra is done by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) that was constituted by an Act of J&K State Legislature in 2000, with the Governor of J&K as its ex-officio Chairman.

The duration and schedule of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra is decided each year, keeping in view the extent of snow fall in the preceding winter, and the date of Raksha Bandhan, on which the Yatra traditionally concludes.

In earlier times the Yatra would last for around two weeks, with persistent demand to increase the duration. After the constitution of the SASB, this was streamlined to a period to 60 days, which continued up to 2009. Since then, a regular scaling down has taken place with the duration being curtailed to 55 days in 2010, 45 days in 2011 and 39 days in 2012. This year the Amarnath Yatra has resumed after a hiatus, interruption in 2019 due to repeal of Article 370, and Covid in 2020 and 2021. This year the Yatra is scheduled for 43 days - 30 June to 11 August.

The Yatra is a colossal security and administrative exercise involving multiple agencies. The base camps, staging areas, porters, ponies, palanquins, medical facilities, langars (community kitchens), security and communications are put in place every year and dismantled at the end of the Yatra.

Shri Amarnathji Yatra encourages economic activity providing livelihood to many. Every year thousands of Kashmiri locals join the Yatra, offering their services with ponies, palanquins, motor transport, hospitality, and associated logistics. Similarly transport and hospitality services providers in Jammu, and airlines from all over the country benefit from the Yatra.

Terrorist threat to the Yatra is however significant. In 1993, Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Ansar had announced a ban on the Yatra for two years. In 1998, Harkatul Mujaheedin declared a ban on the Yatra, two days after it began. The Yatra, however, continued under heavy security arrangements. Major terrorist attacks on Yatris in the past, include Pahalgam in 2000, Sheshnag in 2001 and Nunwan Camp in 2002. In 2003 and 2006, terrorists hurled grenades at vehicles carrying pilgrims in Srinagar and Ganderbal respectively. In July 2017, a bus carrying pilgrims was attacked in Anantnag District, killing seven people, and injuring nineteen. In response to a question in the Parliament on July 25, 2017, Minister of Home Affairs stated that from 1990 to 2017, 36 terrorist attacks had been reported on Shri Amarnathji Yatris, in which 53 Yatris were killed and 167 Yatris were injured.

An extensive security grid is deployed for the Yatra every year. The Indian Army, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and J&K Police provide a 3-tier counter terrorist security structure. Additionally, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Mountain Rescue Teams (MRT) are deployed to deal with natural disasters. The first tier creates a secure envelope with the Forces dominating the mountain heights in and around the area. The second tier does route opening and security to provide safe passage for the yatris. The third tier provides security at camps enroute, including frisking of yatris and their baggage. In addition, yatri convoys moving from Jammu to Nunwan (Pahalgam) and Baltal and back, are accompanied by armed police personnel.

This year The Resistance Front (TRF), a terrorist outfit that came up after August 2019, a proxy of the Lashkar-e-Toiba, has threatened to "spill blood" during the yatra. Notwithstanding the threat, because of the two years gap in the Yatra, higher numbers of pilgrims are expected. Therefore, additional provisions in terms of numbers of security forces and technologies to improve intelligence, surveillance and administration have been incorporated in the scheme of things.

The Challenges of Natural Disasters

Shri Amarnathji Yatra has been affected by natural disasters on numerous occasions. In 1996 heavy rains, snowstorms and avalanches resulted in about 60,000 yatris being stranded at different points. 243 people were reported dead, and hundreds of people were severely affected by exposure to the cold, high altitude problems, and accidents caused by the stampede due to widespread panic among the yatris. In fact, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) was constituted as a corrective measures post the 1996 disaster.

In 2015, three people died in the multiple mudslides in Kulan, Gagangir and Sonamarg villages. The Srinagar - Leh National Highway, which leads to the Baltal base camp, remained closed for three days. In 2018, five people died and four were injured after a landslide triggered by flash floods hit pilgrims near Brarimarg, on the Baltal route. Almost every year the Yatra is suspended for short durations and sometimes pilgrims are diverted from one route to another to keep the flow going.

On 8 July this year, severe rainfall at the higher reaches of The Cave, triggered high-speed muddy slush that washed away 25 to 30 tents and five 'Langars' from the base camp near the Cave. 16 people have died, and 40 injured, even as some are still missing. 15,000 pilgrims have been evacuated.

Threat of natural disasters are not unique to Amarnath or Kashmir, it is the fragility of the Himalayas, and the associated complex processes like deforestation, soil erosion, global warming, weakening glaciers and severe localised rainfall. Even when there have been no natural disasters, the ice Shiva Lingam had melted well before the close of Yatra due to environmental factors.

Clearly losses due to natural disasters far exceed terrorist attacks on the Yatra. Nonetheless, in Kashmir, terrorist threat and natural disasters are often concomitant and need to be dealt with deftly. In September 2014, even as Kashmir was enduring the worst floods, with South Kashmir and Srinagar fully inundated, Indian Army undertook disaster rescue and relief, while simultaneously eliminating infiltration bids from Pakistan across the line of control.

The Past and the Future meet in the Present - responsibility and sensitivity essential

The long spell of terrorist incident-free Yatra between 2006 and 2017, can be attributed to lessons learnt and year on year strengthening of the security grid. Similar strategies need to be applied to mitigate natural disasters and deal with the aftermath.

Management of the Yatra in terms of duration, number of pilgrims, modes of transportation, siting of base camps and staging areas have to factor the fragile ecology and environment. Well formulated plans must go hand in hand with effective implementation.

The makeshift camps must be replaced by permanent assets sited carefully keeping in mind potential threats, natural disasters, and terrorists.

The number of Yatris must be determined based on the capacities established, and no ad hoc and makeshift arrangements should be permitted.

The stretch between Sangam and the Holy Cave should be a 'restricted zone', with only medical facilities and essential security. Langars and other administrative paraphernalia must remain outside this zone.

Use of helicopters for Yatra has to be controlled keeping in mind ecological factors. Eco-friendly disposal of waste should be high priority.

In 2015, the Army undertook a well-planned extensive plantation drive along the Yatra route in collaboration with the Govt of J&K. The idea was to help nature renew, even as humans sought spiritual blessings and livelihood from its benevolence. Responsibility and sensitivity for the sake of eternity is essential in our actions.

(The author was the Kashmir Corps Commander in 2014-15, former Member, National Security Advisory Board and Deputy Chief of Army Staff)

Dad’s weed grow ‘to fund son’s treatment’ – Kent Online

Posted: at 8:39 am

A father claimed he began growing cannabis in the loft of his home to pay for medical treatment for his son.

But a judge heard none of the money was ever used to pay for a scan.

Now supermarket delivery driver Kieron Harris, 31, has been jailed for 18 months after he was caught growing 36 plants which could have netted him up to 45,000.

In the dock with him at Maidstone Crown Court was ex-partner Charlotte Harris, 28, who has now changed her last name to Brown.

She had admitted allowing her home to be used for the production of the illegal drug and the court heard the power bills were 10 times the normal for the three months.

The judge, Recorder Clive Broe told Harris: "Drug offences are not victimless crimes. They cause harm to those who abuse drugs and lead to other criminality and to society."

He said that other families face difficulties in raising money for medical treatment without resorting to crime.

The judge said the marriage has broken down since the arrests.

Harris of North Trench Road, Tonbridge, was jailed for 18 months after admitting producing cannabis and possessing criminal property.

Brown, 28, of Bricks Close, Tonbridge, received a 12-month community order and was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.

The judge told her: "You were a willing participant in this but I accept you have had mental health problems."

Prosecutor Ben Irwin said that on June 12, 2020, police stopped a vehicle, driven by Harris, because of a faulty headlight.

He said: "The officers were immediately overwhelmed by the smell of cannabis. The officers asked what was in the car and Harris replied: 'A bit of weed'.

"The vehicle was searched and 21 grams of cannabis were found along with loads of black sacks in the back of the car

"Mr Harris denied the cannabis was his and the car was further searched and in a drawer in the footwell was 2,230 in cash in 10 and 20 notes."

Mr Irwin said when the police told him they now intended to search his home he looked: "Shocked and nervous" before admitting he was growing cannabis there.

He added: "This was a commercial growth albeit on a limited scale. There was also a significant spike in electricity usage and by March 2020 there had been a tenfold increase."

Samantha Davies, for Harris said: "This was driven by a desire to privately fund his son's medical treatment... although that is not to provide an excuse.

"But this is not a case of a professional criminal."

Eleanor Lucas, for Brown, said she had not helped with the setting up in the loft and had not benefited financially."

St. Vincent begins construction of women’s, NICU tower – WTHR

Posted: at 8:38 am

The new construction is just one of several new projects announced in May of 2021.

INDIANAPOLIS Ascension St. Vincent broke ground on a new women's and children's tower at their West 86th Street campus Tuesday.

The new construction is just one of several new projects announced in May of 2021. The $325 million expansion also includes a brain and spine hospital, plus a new parking garage and additional surface parking.

The construction of the tower means the current women's hospital will relocate from Township Line Road to the main 86th Street campus. The new tower, estimated to be 268,000 square feet, will include 109 additional private NICU rooms.

In the new private NICU rooms, moms and babies can be in the same room while receiving treatment. This also means that parents can be in the rooms at any hour of the day.

"The private room model has become the standard of care," Dr. Taha A. Ben Saadsaid. "Our team is excited and proud to offer this opportunity to our patients."

The tower will also connect to Peyton Manning Children's Hospital, providing convenient access to staff at both specialty hospitals.

"When both mom and baby need extensive care, we don't want there to be a delay in getting either exactly what they need," said Dr. Tovah Buikema, director of maternal and fetal medicine. "With experts in both fields, OB and Neonatology on the same floor, working side by side daily, we're setting our patients up for success. Our ultimate goal is to send mom and baby home happy and healthy, and reduce maternal and infant mortalities in Indiana."

This facility will help mothers and babies like Misty and Chase Monson, who were patients in fall 2021.Misty was diagnosed with COVID-19 while pregnant and was the first maternal patient at the hospital to be placed on an ECMO.

"I am excited for the future moms who will be able to watch the progress of their child and hold them and just talk to them whenever they want," she said. "This new facility is going to be amazing for future moms in similar situations."

Misty was unable to see Chase until six days after he was born, when her body was finally able to fight the virus.

Ascension St. Vincent Women's Hospital is one of only two Level IV Perinatal Healthcare Centers in Indiana, meaning it provides comprehensive medical and surgical care to the most acutely ill and medically complex mothers and infants.

Vandalized wall, Blessed Virgin Mary statue found at Church of the Ascension – KSHB 41 Kansas City News

Posted: at 8:38 am

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. Church of the Ascension in Overland Park was vandalized just after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Its just crazy, said Robert Arp, a parishioner of the church.

The vandalism left parishioners pained to see the damage stained in red.

Its an effort and intimidation to try to silence the church but to silence the people as well, said Archbishop Joseph Naumann with the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.

In red, the words My Body My Choice" were painted across the walls of Ascension Catholic School, which is connected to the church, along with a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

For somebody to be a coward and come in the middle of the night, apparently, and defame or deface property is gutless, and illegal and shows a lack of integrity, Arp said.

Naumann says this vandalism is not the only of its kind, mentioning Value Them Both signs have also been targeted.

Weve seen others, not as extreme, but the stealing of signs and taking down of signs, graffiti on the signs.

In the meantime, volunteers, church staff and parishioners scrubbed and brushed away the damage.

We have to find a way to have civil discourse we can disagree but we can still respect each other, Naumann said.

The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas released an official statement that can be read below:

"Parish buildings, including a statue of the Blessed Mother, were extensively defaced with red spray paint. Authorities were notified and we ask that every action be taken to identify and hold the perpetrators of this despicable act accountable.

"'This attack and others targeting Catholic churches in Kansas and across the country are not only vulgar but un-American,' said Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of the Kansas City in Kansas Archdiocese. 'The intention is clearly meant to intimidate and threaten the Church's pro-life beliefs and position of support for the Value Them Both amendment. We will not be deterred.

"'Value Them Both will secure protections from an unlimited and unrestricted abortion industry that is attempting to buy this election so it can further prey on women facing unplanned or challenging pregnancies,' he continued. 'The Catholic Church remains firm in its support of mothers and preborn babies and our members are more firmly dedicated to our mission than ever before.'

"We ask for prayers for the Church of the Ascension's parish community, for a civility leading up to the Aug. 2 vote, and for those committing these acts of vandalism."

GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) While most eight-year-olds are enjoying their summer, one in Gonzales has made it his mission to save up for college to become an astronaut.

Trash 2 Curb, a business that brings your trash to the curb and cleans out the trash bin, was started by eight-year-old Jayce.

We needed to start like going outside and like play but we didnt want to go to summer camp, so she signed us up for a job, said Jayce Berfect, the owner of Trash 2 Curb.

He said his goal for Trash 2 Curb is to put a smile on other peoples faces but also let other kids know it is okay to leave the play station sometimes.

And I get to like, spread the word so I can like get more kids to do like join so they can get off the game and just like come outside, said Jayce.

The little businessman said the cool thing about his new business is the money.

I can save money for college and when I go to be a grown-up Ill have a bunch of money, I can have my own spaceship and go to space, said Jayce.

Jayce said he will be an astronaut one day but Jayces mother said she is just happy that he is learning the definition of hard work.

And the first thing I ask him, You still love doing it? And as long as he says, Yeah, were going to keep doing it. I just want him to realize that nothings going to be handed to you. You got to work for everything you get. I mean, thats the only way youll appreciate it as well, said Jayces mother Jamyra Berfect.

Cannon Road in Ascension is infamously narrow. Part of it is finally being widened. – The Advocate

Posted: at 8:38 am

Ascension Parish officials expect a developer this month to start widening a notoriously narrow road where new neighborhood plans had sparked controversy months before parish officials halted new growth last summer to rewrite their development rules.

In late 2020 and early 2021, residents living along Cannon Road north of Gonzales had opposed the 103-home Windermere Crossing neighborhood because of Cannon's narrow width, flooding concerns with the low-lying property and other worries.

An important cut-through just north of Gonzales that carries school bus traffic, the road is less than the then-minimum required width of 18 feet. Parish planners had previously rejected a neighborhood for the site in late 2018 before Windermere got the nod in January 2021 amid controversy.

After the parish Planning Commission adopted the project with some road widening requirements, the parish and developer Dantin-Bruce Development ended up cutting a more expansive road-widening deal that the Planning Commission adopted narrowly shortly before the growth moratorium took effect last summer.

Parish officials said last week that the agreed-upon road widening had been expected to start Friday, pending weather, but no signs were visible Monday afternoon. The area has been through some rainy weather recently with more expected.

Brandon Gatlin, parish spokesman, said the work should begin no later than this month in any case.

The job will widen Cannon to 20 feet across the new width standard adopted in late April for large-scale developments and extend from La. 44 to Roddy Road.

The first road deal had called for widening Cannon to only 18 feet across from Roddy to O'Neal Road. In exchange for more road work, the developers were allowed to have only one exit for Windermere.

The current job is expected to improve Cannon's base and road surface.

Rishi Vyas, 40, lives at the southwest corner of Roddy and Cannon and said he hasn't seen much activity on Cannon yet, except for the placement of stakes on his property several weeks ago.

Vyas is among those who remain unhappy Windermere Crossing was approved in the first place.

He said he is concerned over the drainage and traffic impacts and is skeptical whether the road compromise is really responsive to residents' growth concerns.

"Yes, it will be a benefit for the road to be widened because there's a subdivision. But, do the people want to the road to be widened for a subdivision to be put in? No, but, I mean, yeah, in the event that there is one put in, yeah, it's gonna help," he said.

The road work is estimated to cost Dantin-Bruce about $750,000.About half of the cost is expected to be credited against road impact fees.

Parish officials said they have divided the road project in two pieces to minimize traffic impacts. Traffic should use Bayou Narcisse Road or Black Bayou Road to bypass the work.

Home construction in Windermere can't start until the road is finished, parish officials said.
