In its battle with Big Tech, the CFPB is building an army of engineers – Protocol

Posted: July 13, 2022 at 8:58 am

Just before the start of the pandemic in 2019, the number of buyers using freelancers on Fiverr was up 14% year-over-year to 2.2 million. That number has been steadily increasing in the years since: The number of active buyers grew to 4.2 million by March 2022.

But Kaufman said the number of companies using freelancers only represents a tiny portion of the addressable market in the U.S. That may change as businesses attitudes about using freelancers for projects shift, along with workers interest in taking up freelancing full-time. According to Fiverrs Freelance Economic Impact Report, half of freelancers saw an increase in demand for their services in the past 12 months. Kaufman said these changing dynamics will push freelancing into the mainstream in the coming years.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Much of the conversation about the future of work deals with regular paycheck jobs. How does Fiverr think about the future of work?

I think we're in many ways the poster child of remote work because that's the type of marketplace that we power. And we work the majority of the week remotely as well. I think one of the interesting things that happened, and this was largely because of the pandemic and the fact that it forced everyone to at least give [remote work] a try, is the fact that more and more businesses are up to understanding that there should be less focus on people's time and more focus on people's output.

What happened throughout the global lockdown was a situation where businesses lost their ability to track when their actual team members or employees are actually working. And lo and behold, that was not a terrible thing. Activity didn't go down. It actually, in many cases, increased. And that lack of control over people's time was less and less important, and it was replaced with focus on output. And I think that this is what we've been advocating for many, many years.

The other thing is that I think that the pandemic has just created this pull-forward effect on something that would have happened anyway. This is not about these black-swan events. It's all about the fact that it's a generational change, what's happening in the workplace. It's driven by the younger population. So it started in 2010 when millennials joined the workforce. By the end of this decade, 2030, millennials are going to be 75% of the workforce, which means that the way they like to work is the way everybody's going to work because they're going to be the vast majority, and Gen Z has followed.

"What happened throughout the global lockdown was a situation where businesses lost their ability to track when their actual team members or employees are actually working. And lo and behold, that was not a terrible thing."

I think that the younger generation has brought this new way of thinking, and this is why stats show that by 2030, 50% of the U.S. talent is going to be engaging in freelancing, which is incredible, because this means that for companies, half of the talent is not going to be up for full-time hire. And that pushes companies to think differently about how to engage with talent in general.

Fiverr is creating this operating system that will allow or liberate access to talent and integrate that talent into the businesses workflows. It's as easy as using cloud computing these days. It's with a few clicks of a button. And we're seeing more and more companies adopting this change and taking steps to ensure that they can benefit from the flexibility that that gives them.

As companies start to get more and more on board with this idea of talent as a service, how has the number of companies using Fiverr evolved?

We've seen a massive increase in growth If we look at just the past 12 months, there have been 4.2 million businesses around the world, about half of them in the U.S. Thats about 2 million out of 31.7 million small- and medium-sized businesses in the U.S.. So it's still a tiny portion of the addressable market. The opportunity to grow is just massive, and we think it's the early innings of this market.

It always reminds me of the early days of ecommerce when ecommerce was still low single-digit percentage penetration. And it was obvious that this would become a force in business, but it was just a matter of time and educating the market. And once it happened, it actually went through an inflection point. And the beauty about our business is that as successful as it is right now, it's still at a pre-inflection point. This is why I've been doing this for about 13 years, and I'm more excited today than I was 13 years ago.

I want to talk about the Togetherr service that was just announced. Its been described as fantasy football meets advertising. How would you describe it?

Talent doesn't want to work with the same brands over and over again. So they start departing from agencies and start to freelance on their own. Customers are coming, and they understand that they have a variety of different needs and they don't want the same agency to do everything because as talented as any agency can be, they don't have access to all the talent in the world. They have access to the talent that they employ.

"We're trying to provide all of the tools necessary to run your business so you can focus on the things you're really good at."

What we realized was that this presented another opportunity to disrupt the market by liberating access to talent in creating these on-the-fly dream teams that can actually do a project for you.

In essence, what we do is we understand the very little details or attributes of every talent and know how to connect those talents together to form groups that will work on your project and then get this assembled.

With the rise of remote work, workers have a less clear divide between work and life. Fiverr provides some tools to help freelancers manage their time. Are there any plans for growth in this space?

Absolutely, yes. We believe that much like the way we work, everybody else should have a reasonable balance. And, and by the way, that balance shifts throughout the years and how you build your career. If you asked me, I don't remember my 20s and 30s. I worked so hard. And I don't regret it because this was my decision. And it was important for me to build something very large. But this is not the only way to build your career. And everybody should choose their own path. And for us, what's really important is that people would not spend time doing things that they shouldn't be doing.

What do freelancers tool stacks look like?

If they use Fiverr, the ambition we have is that they don't need to use other tools to run their business As much as we can take away from what's not necessary to do, we provide. So if you think about Fiverr as a platform, freelancers don't deal with anything that has to do with contracting, invoicing, figuring out how to exchange information and data files. Theres no need to deal with NDAs, no need to deal with storing and retrieving work. All of that is baked into the platform. So they get super detailed reporting about their performance. So they can figure out where they can do better.

We have products that allow freelancers to also manage their business, even if they have business outside of the platform. We have a product called Fiverr Workspaces. That product allows freelancers to send invoices, send proposals, get paid and so forth. We're thinking about this holistically. We're trying to provide all of the tools necessary to run your business so you can focus on the things you're really good at.

At what point do you think the company will reach that inflection point you mentioned earlier?

It's the $1 trillion question. It's very hard to say how general awareness progresses. And again, if I go back to my comment about ecommerce, it took ecommerce about two and a half decades to reach 10% of commerce. Why didn't it happen faster? Because it's a tectonic change. it takes time to educate people: Why are you spending about a month trying to find a freelancer when you can go on Fiverr and, on average, it takes between five and 15 minutes? Why? Well, it takes time. And the larger the businesses are, the slower they move. The slower they adopt new things. On the small- and medium-sized businesses, they're super agile, they're super flexible. They will use whatever the new thing is. And as we go up market, as we go to larger businesses, obviously those changes are slower. I don't think we're far from that point.

I was talking about the younger generation that came in. That younger generation that came in in 2010 is now 10 or 12 years into the workplace. They're becoming managers. They know how to use those systems. So I think that in many ways, we're probably closer than ever to that inflection point. And we're definitely pushing like everything we're doing, from creating awareness campaigns as Super Bowl ads or working with our community to spread the word.

American Innovation and Choice Online Act Has Panelists Divided on Small Business Impact – BroadbandBreakfast.com

Posted: at 8:58 am

WASHINGTON, June 21, 2022 Public Knowledge, non-profit public interest group, further advocated Thursday support for the Digital Platform Commission Act introduced in the Senate in May that would create a new federal agency designed to regulate digital platforms on an ongoing basis.

We need to recognize that absolutely the time is now. It is neither too soon nor too late, said Harold Feld, senior vice president at Public Knowledge.

The DPCA, introduced by Senator Michael Bennet, D-CO., and Representative Peter Welch, D-VT., would, if adopted, create a new federal agency designed to provide comprehensive, sector-specific regulation of digital platforms to protect consumers, promote competition, and defend the public interest.

The independent body would conduct hearings, research and investigations all while promoting competition and establishing rules with appropriate penalties.

Public Knowledge primarily focuses on competition in the digital marketplace. It champions for open internet and has openly advocated for antitrust legislation that would limit Big Tech action in favor of fair competition in the digital marketspace.

Feld published a book in 2019 titled, The Case for the Digital Platform Act: Breakups, Starfish Problems and Tech Regulation. In it, Feld explains the need for a separate government agency to regulate digital platforms.

Digital regulation is new but has rapidly become critical to the economy, continued Feld. As such, it is necessary for the government to create a completely new agency in order to provide the proper oversight.

In the past, Congress empowered independent bodies with effective tools and expert teams when it lacked expertise to oversee complex sectors of the economy but there is no such body for digital platforms, said Feld.

The reality is that [Congress] cant keep up, said Welch. This comes at a time when antitrust action continues to pile up in Congress, sparking debate across all sides of the issue.

Exclusive: Disney inks major advertising deal with The Trade Desk – Axios

Posted: at 8:58 am

Disney has reached an agreement with The Trade Desk, a global ad tech company, that makes it possible for brands to target automated ads across Disney properties using data matched on the back end from Disney and The Trade Desk.

Why it matters: This is one of the largest media-business efforts yet to craft a new ad-targeting system as third-party tracking fades away, and it's likely to trigger a series of similar partnerships between major media companies and other big ad tech firms.

Details: The deal integrates data from Disneys Clean Room, a privacy-conscious repository of first party data, or data Disney gathers directly from its users with their consent, and matches it with personalized data thats been created through an industry framework called the Unified ID 2.0, which The Trade Desk has championed.

Between the lines. The deal will help Disney achieve its goal of shifting more than 50% of all of its advertising sales to automated buying.

The big picture: The deal comes as the streaming advertising landscape grows more competitive.

Bottom line: I think there's a lot of folks kind of sitting there waiting for some of this stuff to play out in the identity [personalized data targeting] landscape. But we're not waiting, said Tim Sims, chief revenue officer at The Trade Desk.

Thanks to Red for providing the Custom Flag Script. I hope more people can learn this simple and practical script.

The flag was designed and made by @, and I only did a little work. Since he is in school, I uploaded this work. He created a fictitious world. At present, he has made the flags of these two countries which are very different in geographical location and social system but have a good relationship with each other. In the future, he will create the flags of other countries and other sub camps of these two countries.

Of course, I added a little extra work as usual. As you can see, I have joined two flags of Internet Micronations on the Chinese Internet. At present, I am searching for more flags of Internet Micronations everywhere, and will continue to update here in the future. If you have some interesting flags of Internet Micronations of some other interesting flags, you can send them to me by steam or Tencent QQ International (I'm not sure if this thing still exists) and I will pack them into this mod. I will be very grateful.

Richest European Countries 2022 – worldpopulationreview.com

Posted: at 8:57 am

With more than 50 countries and non-country territories, many of which boast millennia of global influence, it's no surprise that Europe includes some of the most affluent countries on Earth. What may surprise some readers is just how great the difference is between the richest and poorest countries in Europe.

The most common fundamental measure of national wealth is Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which measures the value of all the goods and services produced by that country during a given time period (typically a year). Combined, the top six major countries in Europe all had a GDP of more than $1 trillion (US$) in 2020 and tallied a collective GDP of $13.833 trillion (US$). These results make Europe's financial leaders some of the most productive countries on the planet.

* Known for being the largest country in the world in terms of size, Russia is a transcontinental country. Although the majority of Russian territory lies in Asia, 78% of the Russian people live in the country's European portion. As such, Russia is typically considered a European country.

Useful as GDP is, it favors more heavily populated countries because it makes no account for the number of workers or corporations contributing to its total value. For example, Poland's population in 2020 was just under 38 million, roughly 25.9% of Russia's--however, its GDP was a full 40% of Russia's, which indicates that Poland's economy is actually the more productive of the two. In order to more clearly see scenarios such as this, economists often monitor two additional metrics: GDP per capita and GNI per capita. The first, GDP per capita, simply divides the GDP by the country's population. However, in so doing, it results in a very different list.

Three tiny-but-wealthy micronations leap to the top in this metric, followed by a parade of Northern European countries. Several non-country territories perform well in this category as well, including Bermuda ($117,098), the Cayman Islands ($91,393), and Greenland ($54,471). This is likely due to several reasons, including (but not limited to) the fact that per-capita metrics are easier to impact in countries with smaller populations and the fact that many of these countries are (or have been) international tax havens, which can artificially amplify GDP.

The final metric, Gross National Income (GNI), is a sort of flip-side mirror image of GDP. While GDP measures the value of goods and services produced and "sent out" of the country's economy (though most are "sent out" to domestic customers), GNI measures the value of all the income "brought in" to the country by those products and services. GNI also includes money that enters or leaves the country through international business transactions, which lessens the degree to which the metric is distorted by tax sheltering activity.

With the exception of Monaco, which does not appear on this list because its GNI per capita was unavailable (if it were, Monaco would likely rank first), the GNI per capita list is similar to the GDP per capita list, with nine of the same countries in an altered order.

Leaders of 3 Unrecognized Nations Share Why They Formed Their Self-Proclaimed States – LX

Posted: at 8:57 am

Most countries were traditionally defined by their borders, shared ethnic and cultural roots, mutual enemies, and other socio-political considerations. However whether in the name of political rebellion, simple satire, art, or genuine technological innovation recent decades saw a number of generally little known, mostly unrecognized, physical and virtual, self-proclaimed states appear all around the globe (and off its surface, too!).

The micro, not-so-micro, humorous, serious, and other alternative states like the Principality of Sealand, Republic of Molossia, Kingdom of Asgardia, or the Royal Republic of Ladonia aim to offer their citizens representation more truthful to their values and more aligned with the lifestyles and challenges of modern life.

According to the Montevideo Convention of 1933, which outlines the widely accepted legal definition of statehood today, four criteria must be met by any aspiring state:

Having a permanent population,

Having a defined territory,

Having a government,

Having the capacity to enter into relations with other states.

But is that really all it takes? And what exactly constitutes a territory? Can the population reside online (common for many microstates) and does it have to be human? After all, if you ask President Kevin Baugh of the Republic of Molossia, their mannequin civil servants fulfill their job duties pretty well!

For Queen Carolyn of Ladonia, a micronation formed in 1996, the definition is shifting. The traditional model of statehood and what its role should be in the life of its citizens has changed a great deal since the last massive round of border redrawing (which, in Western Europe, was post-WWII) and we think the world is due for a re-examination of the role of the modern state, she explains.

Liam Bates, of the principality of Sealand, says The internet and blockchain technology in particular is challenging the historic norms of what it means to be a nation, as community building and shared economic and other interests are no longer restricted geographically. Startup cities, metaverse projects, micronations, and others all have different approaches to building and innovation. He adds that We truly believe that any group of people sharing a common cause should have the right to unite under a flag which represents them!

It's no surprise that in a quickly changing, interconnected world, facing unprecedented challenges, and now holding previously impossible technologies at its disposal, people are beginning to question the rules of what makes a nation. From time to time, those very people go a step further, founding their own, new, and unique states. What follows are three micronations that represent the wide variety of reasons these unique places are formed.

In the 1960s [in England] the BBC held exclusive rights to radio and television broadcasting and other communication over the air was forbidden, explains Bates of Sealand, arguably the most well-known micronation, founded just far enough off the coast of England to find itself in unclaimed international waters territory.

Sealand was born in response to this overbearing communications regulation by the British government and its effective arm at the time, the BBC, and its first sustained use was as a base for pirate radio, Bates clarifies.

The over-300-citizen strong population of Sealand embraces the desire for adventure and questioning authority as key aspects of their shared culture, according to Bates. As such, the tiny country has attracted international attention, mostly related to its policies on data transparency and internet freedoms. Today, Sealand continues to reinvent itself according to its founding values.

Using blockchain technology, Bates hopes to bypass what he views as traditional institutions such as banks and dated government models in order to serve our community and citizens in a much more connected and effective manner.

Looking to the future, Sealand hopes to evolve into a metanation, which will encompass their physical territory, in addition to creating an online block-chain enabled global community for people to interact, create, collaborate, and evolve the nations motto of E mare libertas (from the sea, freedom) to E crypto libertas (from crypto, freedom).

The micronation of Ladonia, located within a natural reserve in the south of Sweden, declared its independence in 1996 following a legal battle between its artist-founder Lars Vilks and the local authorities over two art sculptures. With humor a defining characteristic uniting the nearly 30,000 Ladonian citizens (you can become one online, and with a little donation, you can even claim a title of nobility!), the nation is led by its queen (head of state), prime minister (head of government), and a large cabinet of ministers with titles such as the Minister of Raccoons and 42, Minister of the Dark Side, or Minister of Vampire Affairs.

Our ministers select and pitch their own ministries, which is why so many have very whimsical names and odd mission statements, says Queen Carolyn of Ladonia. The Minister of Chili Peppers, for example, once conducted a year-long study on how various methods of preserving peppers freezing, pickling, etc. affect the heat of the peppers, she explains.

Aside from managing their vampire population and studying chili peppers, Ladonia does also have a more traditional panel of ministers, because as the Queen herself admits, its difficult to function without someone monitoring the bank accounts, wrangling ambassadors, and handling international/intermicronational foreign affairs.

The national anthem of Ladonia is the sound of a stone being thrown (gently) into the water and according to tradition, the national anthem must be performed whenever a Ladonian citizen happens to find a stone and a body of water to toss it into, while shouting a hearty WAAALLLLL!!! (One of the two words in the Ladonsk language, always an odd number of as and ls and always more as then ls).

There is a profound lack of humor in the world today, notes Queen Carolyn. We strive to find fun and humor in everything. Being able to laugh at yourself is important, and so is being able to allow speech and opinions that you dont like or want to hear, she adds.

Only founded in 2016, the Kingdom of Asgardia is not a micronation at all. Quite the opposite, in fact. It claims to be the worlds first ever Space Nation.

Despite its very young age, Agardia already boasts a population of over one million (so far residing on Earth) and has already launched a space satellite, which it claims as its sovereign territory.

What initially sounds like extravagant science fiction quickly comes into more grounded context, as the Asgardian Minister of Trade & Commerce Benjamin Dell explains:

Elon Musk says he wants to put a million people in a city on Mars, but how are those people going to be managed? What will be permissible and what not? What are the children going to learn at school? What will people do after retirement? What will happen to human remains once people pass away? And what if suddenly theres no resupply from Earth? You cant wait to answer those questions when youre already in space.

Thats why Asgardia sees itself as a nation of the (not-so-distant) future, currently doing its dry run on Earth. Much like the early colonizers of North America who relied on naval technologies to reach the newly discovered continent, but in the end required much more than just ships to build a country, Asgardia isnt merely interested in futuristic space tech. The Kingdom of Asgardia aims to lay groundwork for the full operation of their space nation so that it can be ready once it becomes a true and viable possibility.

Does that mean Asgardians are just tired of Earthly problems and seek to escape rather than address them? Dell says not at all.

Astronauts in space grow this distance. When they look at Europe, they dont see Germany and France and Poland. They dont see any little borders, no different countries. They see one Earth. What brings us Asgardians together is the fact that were all passionately wanting to build a new identity together, an identity which will unite all of humanity, of all across Earthly borders. Its not perfect yet but thats what were all working towards, Dell explains

Whether your goals are to genuinely redefine existing national structures and values by establishing a serious, new, sovereign state, or if you merely want to build a pillow fort and declare your cat Emperor Whiskers of Pillowland, the good news is you can!

But dont go shredding your national ID just yet. The hard truth is, if youre looking for widespread, international acceptance, youll likely be disappointed.

We take our nation very seriously, states President Baugh of the Republic of Molossia. Wed love to have recognition from the established nations of the world, but were also realistic in that its probably not going to happen. And so we have fun, enjoy ourselves and just have a good time within our little country!

New book, ‘The Colony,’ takes readers into a realm they never could have imagined – Mesquite Local News

Posted: at 8:55 am

By Thomas Mitchell

Author Sally Dentons latest book may have been prompted by the ambush murders on a dirt road in northern Mexico of three female members of a polygamous spin-off sect of the Mormon Church and six of their children, while en route

to the community of Colonia LeBaron, commonly known simply as The Colony, but it is far more than just a true crime book.

Though it begins and ends with vivid accounts of what happened that day in November 2019 and the many scenarios as to why including the likelihood that it was perpetrated by a drug cartel in between The Colony: Faith and Blood in a Promised Land delves deeply into the founding of and teachings of the Mormon Church, as well as the violence-riddled branches of that religion established more than a century ago in Mexico. The book is exhaustively researched and thoroughly detailed.

Denton readily acknowledges that the book was irresistible, because, as she writes, As a longtime investigative journalist and author, I have written extensively about organized crime, murdered women, drug cartels, Western history, polygamy, and Mormons. The brazen daylight attack on the controversial LeBaron clan instantly grabbed my attention as a reporter. But as a descendent of Mormon pioneers and polygamists, I had a personal impulse to unravel it.

In fact, two women who play major roles in the settlement of those Mexican outposts were Dentons great-great-grandmother and great-grandmother. The exploits of both are recounted in the book. Additionally, in the 1970s Denton apprenticed with syndicated newspaper columnist Jack Anderson, who she described as the nationally renowned Mormon muckraker, who had broken exclusive accounts of the bloody deeds of some of those Mexican polygamous cults, even labeling one of the polygamist leaders the Mormon Manson.

In describing her purpose for The Colony Denton writes, This book is an exploration of LeBaron the place and the family in an effort to explain the impulses that drove thousands of women over generations, including ancestors of mine to join or remain within a novel American religion based on male supremacy and female servitude. Many did not have a choice in the matter, of course, but many others did, and many embraced their patriarchal world.

The book provides a detailed account of how Mormon leaders Joseph Smith and Brigham Young migrated west to Utah and embraced the devine Principle, the practice of polygamy, and something called blood atonement the killing for a higher purpose, as frequently practiced in true Cain-and-Abel fashion by several LeBarons, literally brother killing brother.

The chapter on the Mountain Meadows Massacre alone is worth the price of admission.

On September 7, 1857, in a meadow in southwestern Utah, a Mormon militia attacked the Fancher Train, Denton writes. After a five-day siege, the Mormons persuaded the emigrants to surrender under a flag of truce and a pledge of safe passage. Then, in the worst butchery of white people by other white people in the entire colonization of America, approximately 140 unarmed men, women and children were murdered.

She goes on to explain how, why and who ordered the attack, as well as how the closely guarded secret plan was unveiled.

Denton later in the book delves into the laws being passed by Congress in the late 1880s banning and penalizing the practice of polygamy, which made the Mormon Churchs fourth Prophet, Wilford Woodruff, who himself had nine wives, realize the church could only survive if the US retreated from its hostility and granted statehood to Utah. Thus, on October 6, 1890, he issued what became known as the Woodruff Manifesto, advising Latter-day Saints to refrain from polygamy. That prompted the LeBarons and others to break from the church.

After recounting the evolving decades of violence and conflict and prospering agricultural endeavors among the polygamist colonists, Denton returns to the present-day hillside massacre case, which many LeBarons and law enforcement agents still see as unresolved despite numerous arrests.

The Colony provides a thoroughly eye-opening exploration of a shocking existence and mindset that few of us could ever have imagined in our worst nightmares.

The book is available in a number of local bookstores, as well as the usual online outlets, such as Amazon and Barnes and Nobel.

Posted: at 8:55 am

With traditional relationships redefining meaning in todays age, we are now more open to different types of relationship styles such as polygamy, sologamy, open relationships etc. Taking a leaf from the same scenario, director Faezeh Jalali put together a collection of plays, which challenges the traditional relationships set by the society.

Alis new work, titled Strictly Unconventional, is a set of short quirky plays that explore unconventional relationships such as a gay man and a polyamorous woman who find happiness together, a woman who walks out of a sexless marriage, a couple dealing with mental health issues, an old man who regrets his life choices, and a couple bragging about how perfect they are. The intention was to keep it light-hearted and funny, yet bold and capable of evoking the right emotions in the audiences minds.

When asked how the director feels about the play, Ali says, I havent had the time to think about it because the rehearsals take up so much of my time. But when I try to sleep at night, Im like, Oh my God, how is this happening? How am I doing this? Also, I try to avoid thinking about it too much and let the day come and allow things to happen, when it will.

With a collection of short plays, the actors are challenged to shift narratives and enact different scenarios while also ensuring it is wildly entertaining. Actor Devika Shahani, who enacted two roles a woman struggling with a partner with serious mental health issues and another of a man, shares, I am in two pieces, both very different and with quite a variation. But I find it to be the most exciting part of being an actor, as it gave me a chance to explore the different layers of human beings. Finding the truth of a person in the complexity of their life, that is my journey.

With few roles written for older women that go beyond that of a mother, aunt or mother-in-law in a play, actor Suruchi Aulakh took on the role of an older woman in a loving lesbian relationship, who is going through a manic episode. She says, The role was very well researched, written and offers a lot of scope for an actor to execute and enjoy her craft. Even while rehearsing for it, we would also have extensive discussions about what the person might be going through and how to stay true to the condition while maintaining dramatic tension. I tried different types of anger and frustration exercises before narrowing down on what would be most appropriate in this situation. At times, it may seem excessive, but it is as close to reality as possible.

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Season 4’s most uncanny twist is a total delight – Inverse

Posted: at 8:55 am

The undead of Staten Island have been reborn. Or, at least energy vampire and corporate cog Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) has on What We Do in the Shadows. The soul-sucking bore perishes of natural causes at the age of 100 in the Season 3 finale, which is the typical expiration date for energy vampires, apparently. What happens to him next as part of an ongoing Season 4 arc is the riskiest thing the show has ever done and it pays off in spades.

Just before the end of the Season 3 finale, a horrific neonatal version of Colin crawls out of his adult-sized selfs chest cavity with Prokschs face poorly superimposed on an infants body.

This resurrection gimmick would not work in almost any other show. But FXs irreverent comedy-fantasy-horror-mockumentary has just enough panache, low-brow hilarity, and consistent cleverness to strike the right balance with Baby Colin. Hes sweet, disgusting, and absurd. He also still resides in a mansion full of old vampires. Shockingly, Baby Colin already feels more important to his housemates arc than he ever did as an elderly adult.

JUICY SEASON 4 SPOILERS AHEAD.

What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 begins with the Core Four reuniting after travels abroad Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and her talking Nadja clone-doll (also voiced by Demetriou), Nandor (Kayvan Novak), and Laszlo (show creator Jemaine Clement), who has been busy raising Baby Colin to be interesting at the manor. Baby Colins instruction consists of literature and art deemed worthy and not boring by the snobbish dandy, while all other babysitting duties are ignored.

Guillermo (Harvey Guilln), the vampire-slaying bodyguard of Nandor and reluctant henchman of the fanged friends, also makes his way back to the flamboyant home. He is immediately alarmed by Baby Colins perilous environment.

However, the gang soon finds that while they are (mostly) immortal, their Staten Island mansion is not. Neglect has made it far too dangerous for the potentially human Baby Colin. Nadja makes her case to the Vampiric Councils Guide, played by Kristen Schaal, and is approved to transform the space into a nightclub, paying homage to both True Blood and Blades memorable takes on vampiric bars.

What We Do in the Shadows returns to FX on July 12 with Season 4s first two episodes, entitled Reunited and The Lamp. FX

Baby Colin is integrated seamlessly into the series deadly discotheque arc with a surprising Episode 3 twist that delights the shows characters, and will likely delight its viewers.

But, is Baby Colin really all that different from Adult Colin? Prokschs comedic chops are utilized better than ever as a convincing youth (who may or may not be harboring an exhausting secret from the rest of his adoptive parents). It helps that the potential ruse is bolstered by Baby Colins lines, which were clearly written by people who know how to think up realistic kid characters. Baby Colin retains the navet and endless fascination of normal toddlers, even with Prokschs adult uncanny valley face.

De-aging Colin, who isnt quite as cute as The Mandalorians Baby Yoda or Guardians of the Galaxys Baby Groot to become an instant fan-favorite, was a huge creative risk, but it pays off. A CGI-plastered visage on a little body gives What We Do in the Shadows a facelifta touched-up version of the already near-perfect horror sitcom.

En garde! Much to Laszlos dismay, Baby Colin gravitates more toward musical theater than weapons. FX

While Baby Colin may be a youngster, What We Do in the Shadows brand of comedy remains as crass, inappropriate, and devilishly entertaining as always. Characters explore polyamory, polygamy, and even penis enlargement! Its the same sort of cheeky potty humor established first by the movie of the same name created by Clement and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi.

The FX shows rebirth reminds us that we shouldnt have to turn off our brains to enjoy contentnot even if that content is meant to make you laugh lest we miss out on the great television and films that make the most of the genre without insulting its audiences intelligence. Thankfully, What We Do in the Shadows can be depended on to deliver.

What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 premieres July 12 on FX.
