New UK Tory favourite accused of lethargy and ‘lies’ – Macau Business

Posted: July 14, 2022 at 10:40 pm

British Conservative leadership contender Penny Mordaunt came under blistering attack Thursday after she surged in the race to succeed Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as another candidate faced elimination.

The little-known Mordaunt, a committed Brexiteer who was briefly Britains first woman defence secretary before moving to less senior government jobs, has emerged as the darling of Tory grassroots members.

In the first round of voting by Conservative MPs on Wednesday, she came a strong second behind former finance minister Rishi Sunak and ahead of Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, and was installed as the new favourite by bookmakers.

Polls point to the Royal Navy reservist beating Sunak, Truss and the other three remaining candidates comfortably, once the members decide between the final two.

Two candidates were knocked out Wednesday, and the bottom ranking contender was to be eliminated in a second vote by MPs later Thursday.

Former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt, one of those eliminated, threw his support behind Sunak, whose resignation from the cabinet last week helped spark a ministerial revolt against Johnson after months of scandal.

Drawing a pointed contrast to Johnson, Hunt said the former Chancellor of the Exchequer was one of the most decent, straight people with the highest standards of integrity in politics.

But the wealthy Sunak faces questions about his familys tax affairs and prior decision to retain US residency. And he is opposed to immediate tax cuts to confront a post-pandemic cost-of-living crisis, stressing the need instead for fiscal responsibility.

Truss, who campaigned against Brexit in Britains 2016 referendum before becoming a zealous supporter, was formally launching her campaign with vows of tax cuts and a smaller state.

My mission is to make our country an aspiration nation, where every child, every person has the best opportunity to succeed, she was expected to say, as her supporters urged two outsiders still in the race to drop out to avoid fragmenting the right-wing vote.

Mordaunt, a junior trade minister who is relatively untainted by the scandals of Johnsons premiership, has come up the middle between Truss and Sunak with a campaign strong on patriotic themes.

But the Daily Mail took aim at her stance on transgender people, one of Britains culture war debates that has energised the partys right-wing.

Mordaunt was telling lies after previously supporting transgender people in the role of equalities minister, only to take a harder line at her campaign launch this week, the newspaper quoted a Truss ally as saying.

Her political enemies have also jibed at Part-time Penny, alleging she has not taken her government roles seriously.

That line of attack was given new impetus from a dramatic intervention by former Brexit minister David Frost, who was Mordaunts boss until both moved on last year.

Based on their time working together, Im afraid I would have grave reservations about her entering 10 Downing Street, Frost told TalkTV, revealing that at his request, Johnson had removed her from their department.

Im sorry to say this that I felt she did not master the detail that was necessary in the negotiations (with Brussels, over Northern Ireland) last year, he said.

She wouldnt always deliver tough messages to the European Union when that was necessary, and Im afraid she wasnt sort of fully accountable, she wasnt always visible. Sometimes I didnt even know where she was.

There was no immediate response from the Mordaunt camp.

Several television debates between the remaining candidates loom, with the first Friday night, ahead of weeks of nationwide hustings in front of Tory members. The eventual winner is set to be announced on September 5.

MDHHS employee latest to plead the Fifth in Flint water trial – MLive.com

Posted: at 10:38 pm

ANN ARBOR, MI A Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) employee is the latest person to invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to testify in a civil bellwether trial in federal court.

Nancy Peeler, the states director of maternal, infant and early childhood home visiting for the health department at the time of Flint Water Crisis, briefly took the witness stand in the U.S. District Courtroom of Judge Judith E. Levy Wednesday, July 13, and declined to answer any questions pertaining to her duties with the MDHHS or the water crisis.

On advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer based on the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, Peeler responded to a handful of questions from Levy as well as attorneys representing Veolia North America (VNA).

Peeler said she would answer the same way when asked questions by attorneys for Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam (LAN) and attorneys representing for the plaintiffs in the case.

A witness has a right under the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to decline to answer questions on the grounds that doing so may tend to incriminate the witness.

The jury was instructed that they may but are not required to infer from that refusal that the answer may have been adverse to the witness interest.

The Michigan Attorney Generals office previously charged Peeler with two counts of common law offenses and one count of neglect of duty. The case is currently pending in Genesee County Circuit Court.

A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 9 during which Judge Elizabeth A. Kelly will rule on a motion filed by the AGs office requesting Peelers case be remanded to 67th District Court for a preliminary examination.

The motion was filed in response to a June ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court, which opined that a judge does not have the authority to indict a defendant. Peeler was one of the multiple defendants charged via a one-judge grand jury, in which Judge David J. Newblatt of the 7th Circuit Court served as the one-man grand jury on the matters, hearing evidence behind closed doors and then issuing indictments against the defendants.

Peelers attorney, Harold Z. Gurewitz, said in court Wednesday he intended to challenge that motion, believing that because of the Supreme Court ruling, the charges need to be dismissed.

The civil trial Peeler had been called to testify in Wednesday involves four Flint children who have sued two companies that advised the city of Flint during its water crisis.

Attorneys for the children claim their clients suffered acquired brain injuries from lead in Flint drinking water and claim the consulting companies are partially responsible for those damages.

Those companies VNA and LAN have contested the injuries claimed by the children and say government officials are solely responsible for elevated levels of lead in Flint water.

The trial is scheduled to continue Thursday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

BetMGM Casino offers one of the best deals youll find when signing up at an online casino for the first time. Youll get a 100% deposit match up to $1,000, plus $25 on the house.

This is the best sign-up offer our team has reviewed, and given BetMGMs vast variety of poker, slots, table games, and an enjoyable live dealer blackjack experience, this promotion is almost too enticing to pass up.

Not only does BetMGM have the best promo offer you can receive on the market, it also has one of the most robust online casino apps youll find. Youll feel like youre on a real-life MGM casino floor when you start playing all the games at your disposal.

The famous Atlantic City casino also offers a stellar online product, and the promo offer is a worthwhile one for new users. When youre ready to sign up, Borgata is offering a 100% deposit match up to $1,000, plus $20 on the house.

Its not quite BetMGMs offer since BetMGM offers $25 free, but its close. Given the similarities in the offer, if you prefer Borgatas online casino app, that $5 difference might be worth it to choose this highly thought of brand. Borgatas offer is still strong, and given that the Borgata brand is one of the oldest and strongest in the country, you cant go wrong with selecting their promotion when its time to sign up.

Borgata has one of the top website design layouts and game selections in the online casino industry. Borgatas app has also received generally positive reviews, though iOS version has received better marks from the general public than its Android counterpart.

Betway is a European gaming giant that has started to make its presence felt in the U.S. While its online casino promotion is not at the level of BetMGM and Borgata, its still a good one: Betway is offering a 100% deposit match up to $1,000. Betway does not include a FREEPLAY amount for you to get started with, but other than that, the promotion is the same as BetMGM and Borgata.

What Betway does have going for it is that its online casino website and its customer support services it among the best of the brands we have reviewed. If youre an avid gambler who prefers to use websites rather than mobile apps, and youre looking for a responsive and reliable customer service team, then Betway should be the choice for you despite the promo offer being a small step down from some of the others.

The mobile Betway apps on Android and iOS are not at the same level as their website counterpart, though, so if you prefer playing on your phone or tablet then we would not recommend choosing Betways promo offer. Betways gaming library differs depending on if youre playing in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, so be sure to check out whats offered in each state before signing up to make sure the game you want is there.

When youre ready to make that decision, click the link below to use bonus code ACTION and take advantage of the 100% deposit match up to $1,000.

New Jersey and Pennsylvania

bet365 is another big-name gaming company in Europe that is finding some traction in North America. With a live sportsbook in New Jersey and Ontario, bet365 also has a robust online casino offering in The Garden State. And they have a good promo offer at sign-up: 100% deposit match up to $1,000. This is a solid option if you like a lot of the other things bet365 brings to the table its the same sign-up offer you can choose with Betway.

bet365 offers a number of games in its library, including hundreds of slot options, holds several reputable fair gaming licenses, and has impressive web and app performances on Android and iOS. Depending on your personal preference, these positives could outweigh the fact that bet365 does not offer a FREEPLAY amount like BetMGM or Borgata, or a gas card like Caesars, which in the grand scheme of things is negligible a difference if you favor the bet365 brand.

If youre looking to sign up with bet365, take advantage of their 100% deposit match up to $1,000offer using code ACTION.

New Jersey

100% deposit match up to $1,000

ACTION

Another big name in the sports betting world, WynnBET also has a presence in the online casino market. While WynnBET is a good option if youre looking to start online gambling, their promo offer is in line with some of the others on this list a 100% deposit match up to $1,000. WynnBET does not differentiate itself from bet365 or Betway with its sign-up offering, but that doesnt mean you should dismiss what they bring to the table considering theyre known for their big Las Vegas casinos.

On the virtual casino front, WynnBET stands out with its excellent slots choices as well as a fun live dealer experience that rivals all of the other brands on our list. The web and app experiences on Android and iOS are also good, which will have you feeling like youre gambling in one of WynnBETs luxury Vegas casinos from the comfort of your couch or desk chair. The gaming options are somewhat limited, however, so keep that in mind when deciding if WynnBET is the right online casino for you.

If you feel like it is and you want to sign up, be sure to use code ACTIONto score the 100% deposit match up to $1,000 at registration.

Michigan and New Jersey

100% deposit match up to $1,000

Caesars may have entered the sports betting market recently, but its online casino has been around for years and is one of the best around. And it has a promo offer to match its lofty reputation as a household name in the online casino market: 100% deposit match up to $2,000, plus a $100 gas card.

The deposit match is double the best deposit match youll find on this list, which makes it among the best youll find. Caesars promo offer does not include a FREEPLAY amount like the $25 youll get with BetMGM and the $20 youll receive with Borgata, but there is one additional bonus to signing up with Caesars for the first time a $100 gas card, which you can use immediately upon receiving it. The gas card is not tied to playthrough requirements.

Caesars is a viable option if youre looking to choose it to sign up, but you should be aware that the game library has been scaled back since its acquisition of William Hill and ensuing streamlining of its product. The library cant compete with the likes of BetMGM, but it still has enough games to keep you entertained and we would expect the selection to increase as time goes by and Caesars sorts through its brand reshuffling. Also, Caesars has put a lot of effort into making its customer support services among the best in the industry, so thats a big appeal if you choose them. Overall, Caesars is a strong choice with its 100% deposit match up to a $2,000, plus $100 gas card.

Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia

Are Payouts At Online Casinos Higher Than Land Casinos? – Parle Magazine

Posted: at 10:37 pm

If you have ever gambled online, you have likely asked yourself if the payouts are higher at online casinos or in brick-and-mortar casinos. As an individual player, this is nearly impossible to determine as it requires a significant amount of data collected from gambling on multiple platforms and playing many different games.

Thankfully, you are not the first person to have had this question other people have wondered the same thing in the past and crunched the numbers so that you do not have to. Keep reading to learn more about payout differences between online and brick-and-mortar casinos and the characteristics which set online casinos apart.

The Rise of Online Casinos

Gambling has existed in thousands of different forms since time immemorial. Archaeologists have even found bones used for playing dice that predate the Egyptian pyramids. The way we gamble reflects the needs and interests of our current society and culture. Drawing from this, one could argue that convenience, speed and shorter attention spans are some of the defining traits of our current cultural environment.

Online casino games were first developed about 30 years ago, but they have really started to grow in popularity over the course of the past decade. These days, online casinos are popular in nearly every country around the world and market analysts have predicted that they will only continue to grow in popularity for the foreseeable future.

One of the reasons that online casinos and sports betting platforms have become so popular is due to their convenience and ease of use. Instead of needing to drive to the nearest casino, gamblers can play all their favorite games (and many more) on their phones. Of course, this level of convenience is especially attractive to Canadians who want to avoid unnecessary journeys in the heart of winter.

Registration Bonuses

The online gambling and sports betting industry has become so popular that gaming and betting platforms need to set themselves apart from the competition just to get ahead and survive. Many casinos are now offering online casino bonuses to new players to distinguish themselves from the competition.

Casino bonuses are typically available for new registrants and may require a certain promotional code, minimum deposit amount or even deposit schedule, such as a first deposit within a certain period followed by a second and third within specified timeframes. While casino bonuses vary widely in terms of quality, most typically offer a percentage match for deposits, cash bonuses or free spins on specific games.

New registrant bonuses are typically not available for brick-and-mortar casinos. Although physical casinos do have bonuses and promotions, they do not necessarily sign up everyone who walks through their doors for the first time and hand them a number of chips for the poker table or quarters for certain slot machines. In this way, online casinos offer players the possibility of attaining higher payouts.

Return to Player

You may have seen the term RTP in various casino reviews this stands for Return to Player and is the percentage of stakes a game is programmed to return to the player. The higher the number, the better the payout and the win rate for that particular game.

Some sources indicate that online casinos have higher RTPs than physical casinos, further boosting the winning chances of players. Table games tend to have the same RTP regardless of whether they are being played online or in person, but slot machine games can differ greatly.

Gamblers can try to maximize their returns by reading reviews of slot machine games and focusing on games with the highest possible RTP. The internet is a great resource for this information and allows gamblers to easily make an informed decision about the slot machine game they want to play next, rather than having to guess or hope that a particular slot machine in a physical casino has a good RTP.

One reason why the RTP in brick-and-mortar casinos is lower is because of the high cost of running a casino. Casinos tend to be large, open spaces, which are notoriously difficult and costly to heat in the winter and cool in the summer.

On top of that, entire teams of staff are working physical casinos every single day, whether they are serving drinks or dealing cards. These are all part of the high operating costs which can drive down the RTP in order to improve the casinos profit margins.

Jackpots

Conversely, some of the biggest jackpots of all time have been awarded to gamblers who were playing slot machine games in person. The current biggest win for an online jackpot is the $23.3m record in April 2021. The biggest slot machine game win for an in-person machine was a staggering $39.7m in Las Vegas in 2003, which remains the largest jackpot in history.

The other top jackpots are also nearly uniformly the result of gambling in person. This will certainly attract the attention of some gamblers who love the allure and appeal of huge jackpots, however unlikely they are.

However, another aspect of online gambling which may have contributed to the lack of mega-giant jackpots is the fact that it is easier to gamble with very small amounts online than it is in person. While it may be difficult to show up to the casino in person with a bag full of quarters, it is not awkward to bet low online.

As online gambling becomes more and more popular, the jackpots will likely continue to increase in size.

How To Choose?

Every gambler has their own unique preferences and many like to play casino games both in-person and online. This is because each style has its own attributes and qualities which are likely to be appealing to gamblers. Thankfully, no one has to choose between the two: both can be played and enjoyed equally.

A Deeper Look into the Online Gambling Industry – Baltic Times

Posted: at 10:37 pm

The online gambling market experienced a meteoric rise during 2020 as a result of the global pandemic that forced people to stay at home and avoid mass gatherings in public spaces like physical casinos. In fact, the online gambling industry surged to reach a market value of nearly $77 billion dollars worldwide. This marked a 13.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2015. Right now, analysts are looking at the upward trend of the industry and believe that the online gambling market will continue to experience a CAGR of 8.6% from 2025 to 2030. That means that its estimated the global online gambling industry will be worth well over $192 billion in 2030.

The Cause of the Rise

Of course, analysts can look at the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 as one of the prime movers of the growth of the industry. However, there are also a number of different factors to take into consideration such as the economic growth of various economic markets. Various economic classes, particularly the middle class, have experienced an increase in spending power over the past few years. This translated to more disposable income that could go to recreational activities like gambling.

Another factor to look into is the growing adoption of technology all over the world. Specifically speaking, internet accessibility is a lot more prominent around the world, especially in developing nations in Africa and Asia. Since more people now have access to wireless internet connections, its a lot easier to indulge in online services such as those provided by casino platforms. Aside from that, mobile technology is becoming more accessible to the consumer public as well. There is a growing number of smartphone and tablet users all around the globe. And since casino platforms are developing more mobile-friendly versions of their apps that mean there is a higher incentive for people to indulge in online gambling. Some of the worlds most popular online casino games can now be played on mobile devices, therefore providing consumers with a higher degree of mobility and accessibility.

The rise of e-commerce also contributed to the growth of the online gambling market. In the past, there was still substantial trepidation on the part of the consumer public to engage in online transactions over any potential security and privacy threats. However, most of those fears have now been appeased and the e-commerce industry is continuing to grow every single day. There is now higher confidence among the consumer public to engage in online transactions with various websites. Digital payments are now becoming more commonplace and thats why various virtual e-commerce platforms are now thriving.

Potential Hindrances to the Growth of the Industry

Even though the future of the industry looks bright, there are still a number of different threats that could potential hinder the growth of the online gambling market moving forward. Yes, technology is growing to become more sophisticated and accessible. This means that society is likely to learn more towards technologically-powered services and products. However, there is still also the matter of the global economy to take note off. The possibility of a global recession could potentially hamper the growth of the online gambling industry.

Aside from that, there are also various countries all over the world that are doubling down when it comes to the restriction of gambling regulations. There are various social and moral issues that complicate the process of legalizing gambling in these areas such as potential gambling addiction and internet security. However, for the most part, many nations around the world have very healthy and functional online gambling regulatory systems and structures in place.

Variance of Services

The sheer variance of services of the online gambling industry also contributes to its growth. There are the standard online casinos that offer games like slots, poker, and baccarat to users. However, there are also sports betting websites that contribute heavily to the growth of the industry. Earlier, it was mentioned that there is increasing growth in terms of mobile usage. But there are also developing technologies in the realms of extended reality that could potentially enhance the gaming experience of users.

Ultimately, there is no denying that the online gambling industry is poised to experience substantial growth over the next decade despite the uncertainties posed by the state of the global economy.

Online Sports Betting in the US Soars in May, Even as Recession Fears Grow – Covers

Posted: at 10:37 pm

Figures released Wednesday by the American Gaming Association for May show that retail and online sportsbooks reported revenue of nearly $488 million.

Last Updated: Jul 14, 2022 4:57 PM ET Read Time: 3 min

The American obsession with online sports betting continues unabated, as figures released Wednesday by the American Gaming Association (AGA) for May show retail and mobile sportsbooks reported revenue of nearly $488 million for the month.

Overall gaming revenues from commercial land-based casinos, sportsbooks, and internet casinos rose to $5.03 billion in May, an increase of 7.9% from the same period last year, setting a record for the month and making it the second-highest month in history.

In addition, 18 of the commercial gaming states that were operational a year ago saw growth in their May revenues compared to May of 2021, the AGA said.

For the first five months of 2022, the AGA, the Washington-based group representing the U.S. gaming industry, reported that total sports betting revenues were $2.64 billion, an impressive gain of 73.5% from the same period last year. Those numbers have been helped by the addition of online sports betting in New York, among other things.

In March, April and May, gaming revenues exceeded $5 billion in each month and now rank as the three best gaming months in industry history.

All these results came ahead of record-high U.S. inflation figures for June, which soared to 9.1%, the highest 12-month increase in 40 years, and an increase from 8.6% in May.

The figures shocked economists and financial-market analysts and led to growing fears of a recession as the U.S. Federal Reserve Board continues to raise interest rates to stem the inflationary spiral.

Bill Hornbuckle, CEO of MGM Resorts International, speaking at CNBCs Evolve Global Summit on Wednesday, said that he expects inflation and rising gas prices will eventually impact total wagering and earnings, although thus far the impact has been negligible.

"Whats happened over the last 18 months has literally been historic, but if you look at how we thought we would be performing against how we are performing, were exactly where we thought we would be, Hornbuckle said.

Another positive development reported by Hornbuckle and MGM Resorts (which is a part-owner of BetMGM) was the rising number of millennials who are flocking to its casinos in record numbers. He attributed the increased participation amongst this younger target group to the COVID-related introduction of pods and new gaming floor configurations.

"Its brought millennials to the table in a way that they have not been before in this industry. We have more millennial business than weve ever had by 20%, Hornbuckle said.

However, this rise in millennial casino wagering may also be due in some measure to the growing acceptance and enthusiasm for legal sports betting in the U.S., especially among younger generations of bettors who have been subjected to an onslaught of ads promoting major sportsbooks.

The level of promotion seems unlikely to taper off, as online sportsbooks such as FanDuel and DraftKings continue to fight for market share and are bankrolling a campaign to convince California voters to approve a bill that would legalize online betting in that state.

Apart from the release of the May gaming figures, the AGA has also issued a call for the federal government to crack down on illegal offshore gambling websites. Although the rollout of online betting across the U.S. has cut into offshore wagering, there are still significant amounts of illegal wagering activity that the major sportsbooks hope to bring stateside.

An AGA survey found that more than half of gamblers say they still wager using offshore sites.

"Offshore gambling websites are a significant threat to consumer protections and the economic benefits legal gaming provides for communities across the country, said Bill Miller, president and CEO of the AGA, in a press release. "Eradicating these websites and all forms of illegal gambling is one of AGAs top priorities."

Dutch regulator imposes a cease and desist order on Gammix for illegal online gambling offer – Yogonet International

Posted: at 10:37 pm

The Dutch Gaming Authority, Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa), announced the imposition of a cease and desist order on Gammix for illegally offering online games of chance.

Should Gammix persist, the company will have to pay a penalty of 1.47 million ($1.48 million) a week, up to a maximum ofnearly 4.5 million ($4.53 million).

The Ksa has established that Gammix offers games of chance to Dutch consumers via various websites, for which it does not have a license. As a result, no supervision is possible. This means that there is no control over, among other things, the fairness of the game and whether sufficient attention is paid to addiction prevention.

Netherlands Govt. officials have recently announced that, starting in 2023, online gambling companies will encounter new conditions when it comes to advertising. From 2025 onward, sponsoring the shirts of sports teams will be banned in the country, as stated by Legal Protection Minister Franc Weerwind.

Responsible Gaming to Make or Break Sports Betting in United States, Panelists Say – The Action Network

Posted: at 10:36 pm

Sports bettings short history as a legal business in the United States will force the industry to be at the forefront of responsible gambling innovation if it wants to keep thriving in the Western Hemisphere, a panel of executives, regulators, lawmakers and lobbyists said Wednesday.

Before [legalization], if you wanted to help someone with addiction, you really couldnt because you didnt know who they were, New York Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr., one of the architects of New Yorks recent online gaming law, said at SBC Summit North Americas Panel on leadership and player protection.

As New York explores expanding beyond online sports betting and into a legal iGaming market, Addabbo said player protection would be a key component of any forthcoming bill.

Bill Pascrell III, an attorney and lobbyist with Princeton Public Affairs Group who hosted the panel, couldnt overstate the importance of operators partnering with scholarly institutions to measure how well theyre doing when so little prior data exists.

In states like New Jersey, those partnerships have been facilitated by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement, which has placed some of the most stringent requirements and deadlines on operators to invest in responsible gaming.

When numbers are thrown out about a spike in problem gambling, there has to be context. What was it 10 years ago? What is it as a percentage of? Pascrell said. Thats why studies with Yale, Harvard, UNLV and Rutgers are so critical. Theyre able to put the metrics together to measure.

David Rebuck, Director of the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement spoke about the difficulty of navigating relationships between operators, leagues and the ever-changing collegiate sports landscape.

The recent reconfiguration of NCAA conferences, most recently with UCLA and USC announcing plans to join the Big Ten, could complicate responsible gaming relationships with states and sportsbooks, he said.

Its something the industry will have to consider as it navigates RG, Rebuck said.

Both Pascrell and Rebuck agreed with panelist Martin Lycka, senior vice president of regulatory affairs and responsible gaming at Entain, that sportsbooks need to use the swath of data they collect on players to fuel innovative safeguards.

There are two key leaps of faith that the industry and others involved in the space have had to take: Using technology and the ocean of data for other purposes, besides marketing and odds making, and for player protection, Lycka said. We know a lot about our customers, but we need to do even more to paint a broader picture of who they are.
