BUILDING BLOCKS: NSU will look to continue its forward progress in 2022 – Tahlequah Daily Press

Posted: July 27, 2022 at 11:27 am

KANSAS CITY, Kan. Northeastern State took a couple of steps forward in 2021 and will look to advance furthermore this upcoming season.

The RiverHawks got into the win column for the first time since the 2017 season and did so twice, going 2-9. It was the programs first two-win campaign since 2016.

Really excited about the opportunity of the season being right around the corner, said NSU head coach J.J. Eckert Tuesday at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Football Media Day at Kansas City Convention Centers Little Theater. As you go back and recap 2021, you have expectations. You had the whole 2020 COVID year and the things that went along with that and hopefully youre looking for better things and the opportunity to improve in a lot of areas. I think big picture wise, we were able to do some things as a football program to do that. The problem was that we didnt do the things we had to do down the stretch to be the kind of program that we would like to be.

Eckert, who was joined Tuesday by players Blake Corn and Isaiah Davis, emphasized the differences in the past two offseasons.

You look at that 2-9 and when you come out of September and youre where youre at, you want to work hard as far as trying to improve, so obviously going into the spring that was a big, big, big emphasis was just trying to make sure that we continue to be a mentally and physically tough football team a lot like this league is made of up, Eckert said.

This year got us back on track with a full offseason. You had an opportunity to have an eight-week winter conditioning program, and thats important. In this league there are a lot of guys that are redshirt juniors, redshirt seniors, super seniors like we had last year. Weve got to continue to get bigger, faster, stronger to be the kind of program that we want to be, and I think that was something this year allowed us to do it. This spring was the best weve had up to this point from a weight room standpoint.

In his first full season with the RiverHawks, Corn collected 19 total tackles, including 4.5 tackles for losses, and had 3.5 quarterback sacks and a quarterback hurry in 11 games.

Corn is a former Tahlequah High School standout that has made a big impact for NSU at the defensive end position.

It means everything to me, Corn said of representing NSU Tuesday. Tahlequah is where I grew up. Tahlequah is where Ive lived my whole life, and to play for the university in my hometown its one of the greatest honors, especially being coached by another Tahlequah alum. Its just a great feeling to have to be able to be home.

Davis, a junior running back, rushed for a team-high 346 yards on 85 carries (4.1 yards per carry) with four touchdowns. Davis, who played in all 11 games, also had 14 receptions for 129 yards and a pair of TDs.

Davis feels hes made strides, along with the entire offense.

I think I improved by getting bigger, faster, stronger, Davis said. I feel like as a whole offense we have all taken steps in the right direction. We were young last year, so weve got a bunch of guys coming back that know the offense.

The RiverHawks are currently in search of a defensive coordinator with the start of fall camp less than two weeks away. Former defensive coordinator Michael Conrad departed a couple of weeks ago.

Theres never good timing when you lose a coach in any situation, Eckert said. But at the end of the day I think its important to find a way to make it a situation you can get better from, and the timing piece makes that difficult sometimes. Hopefully we can get something turned around in a quick manner, and hopefully we can get everything situated so come Aug. 1 were ready to roll.

The RiverHawks open fall camp Friday, Aug. 5 and their season opener is Thursday, Sept. 1 on the road against Emporia State. Their home opener is Saturday, Sept. 10 against Missouri Southern at Doc Wadley Stadium.

The ‘invisible addiction’ of gambling has become more dangerous than ever in recent years, here’s how to avoid it – Yahoo Canada Finance

Posted: at 11:25 am

072622-mca-gambling_hero_43_1280x960_v20220725104756

Noah Vineberg, a bus driver based in Ottawa, lost over $1 million to his gambling addiction.

Vineberg can trace the roots of his addiction all the way back to grade school, where he avidly traded marbles and hockey cards on the schoolyard.

It wasnt until much later like 16 to 18, 19 I knew that I was gambling heavier than anybody else. And I knew that I definitely had a problem.

After 48 years of grappling with that problem, Vineberg will soon celebrate four years free from gambling.

But many others are still struggling. A University of Lethbridge study found that over 66 per cent of Canadians participated in some form of gambling in 2018, with 2.7 per cent identified as at-risk gamblers and 0.6 per cent identified as problem gamblers.

And while not all those problems are financial, they often come with a hefty price tag.

Gambling has long been one of Canadians favourite pastimes. At more than $15 billion, it represents the largest section of the countrys entertainment industry, according to the Canadian Gaming Association.

And access to it has only gotten easier since April, when iGaming was launched in Ontario making Ontario the first province to regulate internet gambling.

Ads and apps have been popping up everywhere since, even some featuring celebrities like Wayne Gretzky and Shaquille ONeal.

Dont Miss

But those ads can have a troubling effect, says Vineberg. Because while they may show people winning, winners are not who the advertisers are really trying to target.

The client theyre after is the me thats going to go to four different cheque-cashing places and going to just try and make enough on the weekend in my bets to cover my butt by Monday.

Story continues

And its only going to get more difficult for people like Vineberg.

The incidence of online gambling, and the severity of it, have increased considerably, says Diana Gabriele, a gambling counsellor at Htel-Dieu Grace Healthcare (HDGH) in Windsor, Ont.

Gabriele adds the increased isolation during COVID-19 lockdowns hasnt helped.

As a result of that isolation, and the change in lifestyles and loss of employment, people became bored, they became strapped for money, they were looking for ways to make money easily, she says.

They were looking for entertainment.

And entertainment they found. Gabriele explains that the rise of technology and gamification the integration of video games into gambling platforms and vice versa also increases the likelihood of people becoming addicted. It feels more rewarding when players can meet missions or tasks, earn loyalty points and bonuses or score highly in tournaments and leaderboards and it keeps users engaged for longer, increasing their odds of losing more.

Mike Bergeron, a certified credit counsellor at Credit Canada, agrees.

Its just so easily accessible, says Bergeron. Everywhere youre at its on your phone, its at home on your computer, you can do it at work on your lunch break.

Gabriele says that the problem with gambling addictions is the issue is often not well understood.

In the industry, we say that gambling is the invisible addiction, explains Gabriele. There arent any visible effects of a gambling addiction, compared with drugs or alcohol, but there are still some major red flags you can look out for.

Spending more money than you initially intended to or pulling money from other sources to fund your habit is the No. 1 indicator, she says. Another concerning sign is if your habit starts to impact other aspects of your life, like jeopardizing your significant relationships, career opportunities or education.

Those are both signs Vineberg saw in his own life. At one point, he was siphoning off a percentage of his paycheque and keeping it in a separate account to hide his gambling from his wife. He also opened up secret credit cards and lines of credit to finance his habit.

I owed money to everybody I was stealing from Peter to pay Paul, says Vineberg.

Setting firm limits on how much and how often you gamble can help you avoid sliding into risky behaviours. The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction recommends that you bet no more than one per cent of your household income before tax per month, and to restrict yourself to gambling no more than four days a month.

Ontarios regulated gambling platforms include time and money limits. However, Gabriele notes that when a gamblers behaviour becomes problematic, they may choose to reset these limits or turn to offshore accounts.

How you respond physically and emotionally to those limits can be telling as well. Gabriele says if you get irritable when you try to cut back or become overly preoccupied with gambling, that may indicate you have an issue.

Even when theyre not gambling, theyre thinking about gambling, theyre planning on gambling, theyre trying to figure out how they can get more money so they can go back and gamble, says Gabriele.

Or theyre worried about not having any money at all, because theyve spent it all on gambling, she adds. And of course, theyll gamble even more, because that causes a great deal of distressed feelings.

An addict may soon find their problem has gotten so big that they cant cover basic expenses, like their mortgage or rent payments.

Weve seen people go from six-figure incomes and very lucrative, satisfying jobs to living on the streets because of gambling, notes Gabriele. The journey can happen almost from the start for some people, and for other people, it can take many, many years before that becomes a consequence.

Bergeron says the first step to getting out of this cycle is to acknowledge the issue and ensure you have systems in place to prevent you from going back.

Even though there are solutions that could assist them in their debt or credit crisis, if we dont adjust and do something about the behaviour that caused it, they will only become a Band-Aid, says Bergeron.

The second step is to look at your finances. Depending on the severity of your debt, you may want to consider everything from debt consolidation or refinancing your mortgage, to filing a consumer proposal or declaring bankruptcy.

And then we start going through their income and expenses and trying to create a good action plan to live within their means, either to maintain their debt or to get out of debt at some point in the near future, says Bergeron.

For some in the early days of recovery, it might be easier to take some of the decision-making out of their hands and limit their access to money by naming a financial trustee.

Because one of the insidious factors of gambling is the lack of respect that one has for money it gets converted into pretty little coins, you know, just numbers on a screen. It loses its importance to that person, it becomes depersonalized for them, explains Gabriele. And over time, they need to regain that respect and appreciation for money as a tool to provide safety and security in their lives.

Vineberg made several attempts to get help for 15 years before he was ultimately successful. After three relapses the last triggered by the event of his fathers death he came clean to his wife at a therapy session, calling it his first real accountability move.

From there, he attended gambling counselling at the HGDH centre in Windsor. In the first year-and-a-half of his recovery, he had to consolidate a lot of his debts and hand the financial reins over to his wife.

If theres one thing thats different in my recovery now than the other attempts, its that I am still actively participating, acknowledging, being accountable to and owning my recovery, says Vineberg.

For anyone else who may be wrestling with the same, he emphasizes that the sooner you seek help, the better.

He admits the early days were hard. Vineberg and his wife lived on a fairly restrictive budget for a while and made sacrifices to get back on track. But because he sought out help when he did, the couple were able to take a two-week vacation to Italy earlier this year.

And he hopes that in bringing his experience with addiction to light, itll help others who may be struggling in the shadows.

My sons going to be 27 my oldest and I dont tell him not to gamble, says Vineberg. I tell him that if you start to notice that you cant go without it, dont be afraid to reach out for some help.

NFTs began as aimless gambling. They should return to their roots – Sydney Morning Herald

Posted: at 11:25 am

Most of these projects come with a promise of an experience beyond simply buying a unique piece of art. For example, Bored Apes holders are admitted to special clubs and communities, given first access to other NFT projects, or promised entry to ambitious metaverse projects.

On one hand, these promises are admirable and understandable. If you bought equity in a company, wouldnt you be worried if it never innovated or updated investors on its performance?

However, on the other hand, the vast majority of NFT projects over-promise and under-deliver. For example, a project called Players Only founded last year by former NBA players raised $US1.4 million ($2 million) by promising NFT owners autographed merchandise and meetings with the players.

Six months later, the project was shuttered, with users alleging they had never received any signed merchandise and players had not shown up to meetings.

These stories are strewn across the NFT space. Creators raise millions of dollars on promises their project will be the next big thing, buyers believe them and are left holding the bag when the creators fail to deliver. Its easy to see why so many people take a rightfully dim view of NFTs.

Loading

Advocates say the industry is in its infancy and finding its footing. They promise the technology behind NFTs will be invaluable in our increasingly digital future, and that soon everyone will be linking their various online assets to the blockchain. Whether this is true remains to be seen, and should be viewed with scepticism.

Meanwhile, NFT purveyors should take a leaf from the Book of CryptoKitty, and stop pretending it is anything more than a speculative asset for punters to gamble on.

All-Index Rates Inclusion and Diversity at Gambling Firms – GamblingNews.com

Posted: at 11:25 am

The All-Index, an annual survey measuring diversity, inclusion, and belonging within specific global industries, released its 2020-2021 report, focusing on the gambling world. Participating companies received a score of 1-100, and the overall data helped create a clearer picture of the global industry trends.

The document started by acknowledging the impact of COVID-19 on consumer, employee, and employer behaviors and the significant shift towards digitalization many organizations had to undertake. The 2021 All-In Diversity project collaborated with Meta to assess the pandemics effects on the gambling industry and focused on three key aspects.

Demographics-wise, over 85% of participants identified as white even though gambling is a thriving global industry. Nearly 10% identified as other or refused to reply. Asian and Hispanic/Latin participants accounted for only 3%.

This lack of diversity is likely to have a negative impact on the industry if the key findings are an indication of a long-term trend.

The surveys second point of focus was on potential blind spots. More than 50% of participants identified as supervisor/manager or higher. When asked about the impact of COVID on their employees, 12% of leaders identified women, non-binary, LGBTQ, and younger people as the most vulnerable groups. 18% of managers believed women had suffered the most, while 9% thought older people had been the most negatively impacted. None of the surveyed leaders/managers believed the pandemic had negatively impacted ethnic minorities or disabled groups.

The results show that there are blind spots at the top. This not only helps explain the lack of diversity in the industry but has reputational and operational ramifications.

The third key finding of the report was on the generation gap between managers and new employees regarding the top deciding factors when choosing a job. Flexibility and working from home was a common desire among all corporate levels. However, the Junior/Entry Level participants prioritized employer ethics, social impact, and a diverse, inclusive workplace environment. These points were not a priority for leaders and managers, showing a widening cultural divide between generations.

The annual report included 40 organizations across 16 jurisdictions and over 140,000 employees. It identified sports betting, slots, and table games as the most popular gambling products and acknowledged the industrys growing impact.

The betting and gambling industry is a reflection of society, placing it in the unique position of being able to act as a barometer for emerging global trends and changes in society.

Sky Betting and Gaming scored the highest with 85/100 among participating gambling companies. Operator Kindred Group came second with 79. IGT made the top three with a score of 78, while gambling product and service provider Light & Wonder shared fourth place with operator Penn National, sitting at 73. The report lauded their diversity and inclusion initiatives and offered broader industry advice on adapting to the new trends of the post-COVID world.
