Take the leap: A conversation with UC alumna and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir – University of California
Posted: June 11, 2022 at 1:01 am
Jessica Meir had dreamed for decades about what it would be like to sail among the stars. And when she got her chance in 2019, the experience surpassed all of her expectations. This weekend, the UC San Diego alumna will return to the university to share the wonders of her journey to space as a NASA astronaut and offer words of wisdom to the Class of 2022 at All Campus Commencement on June 11.

In advance of her visit, we spoke with Meir about the potential for scientific breakthroughs without the influence of gravity; how her love for our planet exponentially grew after seeing the magnificent landscapes from above; her belief in the power of getting out of your comfort zone to achieve great heightsliterally; and how even astronaut training could not prepare her for the pandemic when she returned home in 2020.
Q. You believe in taking risks to achieve great things, even if it means facing failure along the way. Have there been moments of disappointment on your journey to becoming an astronaut?
A.I absolutely believe that it is necessary to take risks and push yourself slightly outside your comfort zonethat's when the great things happen. Perhaps my biggest failure was in trying to become an astronaut. I had first applied in 2009 when I was completing my doctoral studies at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. I made it all the way to the final round of about 40-50 people, but when I arrived for the interview, I saw I was surrounded by incredible people with remarkable resumes and extraordinary accomplishments. I thought, okay, I'm never going to get selected. When the calls went out that year, I was not among them. Knowing that I had come that close and it hadnt worked out really hurt.
It would have been quite easy at that point to just give up because I had my other career as a scientist that I loved. When the chance came four years later to apply again, I thought, maybe I shouldnt take that risk and put myself through the mental anguish. But if I hadn't put myself out there again and applied, I wouldn't be here today. I hope that I can show that you have to take risks and fail on the way to making your dreams come true.
Q. You embrace challenges with zeal. Is there anything that you fear?
A.As astronauts, we train for years in advance of space missions, so we are incredibly prepared for everything that comes our way. Even though I haven't had to respond to a real emergency scenario in the space environment, I have been through simulations so many times that it's almost like I have muscle memory. We also have thousands of people working in mission control who have designed all of these systems and help maintain them to keep us safe. That's the top priority of everything that we do here at NASA:safety.
The only thing that I've ever feared as an astronautand I've heard this from many other astronauts as wellis the fear of making a mistake. You are so fortunate to be the one in space, and there are so many people that are depending on you and have been involved in this whole process. You feel this huge responsibility because you don't want to let anyone down.

Q. What is something you learned about yourself while working at the International Space Station that you didnt expect?
A.Ive wanted to go to space since I was 5 years old. I thought I was prepared for what that might be like because I had contemplated it so much. What surprised me was that it was even more incredible than I ever imagined. When you're anticipating something, you often build it up and sometimes it becomes a disappointment later. Yet being in space surpassed all of my expectations. Just being up there, weightless and floating 24 hours a day, having the privilege of looking down at the earth below, it changes you as a person.
Q. Youve conducted thousands of experiments throughout your career. What is the most exciting part about conducting science in space?
A.If you think about it, we have one variable here on Earth that is always with us in any scientific system: gravity. It affects us all and everything around us. You can only imagine what might happen to those systems if you remove this omnipresent variable. That's what makes the science we do on the space station so exciting. From physiology and medical experiments to combustion experiments and cell biologyyou name it and we're doing it up there. With this variable removed, who knows what's going to happen? There are so many areas of potential for extraordinary findings that we can unravel when we're doing experiments in space.
Q. We are experiencing an echo pandemic right now with many impacted by mental health struggles. How do you maintain wellness when you face challenges?
A.Psychological wellbeing is a very important part of our job as astronauts and plays a big role in our selection as well. We have a number of teams working to support our mental health, especially when were on long-duration missions in an isolated environment that contains a lot of stressors. During space missions we receive care packages and have the chance to do regular video chats with family members once a week.
There are many parallels to what we go through as astronauts and what the whole world has experienced with the COVID-19 pandemic. I launched to the International Space Station in September2019 before the pandemic began, and I landed April2020. Coming back to a completely different planet was much more difficult for me to deal with than the isolation and confinement on the space station. We tried to share some of the lessons we learned while living in space, such as maintaining a consistent schedule, exercising regularly and making time to communicate with family members.

Q. Youve explored the deep ocean and the edges of the universe. What are the connections, and what draws you to these environments?
A.There are absolutely connections between ocean sciences and space sciences. A key similarity is the need for a life support system. In the ocean, this may mean scuba diving or using a robotic submersible to carry us into the water. In space, we may do a space walk or use a robotic spacecraft to complete our explorations.
What draws me toward both pursuits is the spirit of explorationgoing a little bit further, taking a look around the corner to see what places we haven't gone before. I've always been drawn toward extreme physiology; my expertise is the physiology of animals living in extreme environments. That's easily connected to what we're doing here in space, except now I am the animal in the most extreme of environments.
Q. Did your worldview change after returning to Earth?
A.Ive always been an environmentalist, but I can say it now resonates even more loudly. Seeing Earth from above, you realize how special it is and how we need to protect it. I remember watching the gradient blues of the thin, tenuous band of the atmosphere. You can see it change from a darker blue at the surface, then it gets thinner and thinner with altitude. In no time at all, it has disappeared into the void and blackness of space. When you see that with your own eyes, this extraordinary palette of beauty and how connected all the landforms are, it is so utterly gorgeous and breathtaking.
Being in space also made me realize just how interconnected everything is. Looking down at the earth from the space station, you see contiguous land masses with no borders. And you realize that we're all in this together, from addressing the COVID-19 pandemic to taking care of our planet. Its a view that I really hope I can share with more people.
I also noticed it's really an innate characteristic of humans to focus on small, trivial matters right in front of us. Sometimes, we need to be reminded to take a step back and not focus so much attention on those little things. Space does that for you. I feel so incredibly fortunate to have gained that kind of perspective.

Transhumanism: The Evil Force Behind the New World Order Jonathan …
Posted: at 1:00 am
When one goes to Hararis official website (https://www.ynharari.com), one immediately sees this quote on the home page, History began when humans invented gods, and will end when humans become gods.
Leo Hohmann also wrote the following quote concerning Harari from his interview with Patrick Wood, editor in chief at Technocracy News and Trends. Not only is Harari the key advisor to the head of the WEF, he has millions of devoted followers.
He is your model transhumanist who thinks he can become god, Wood told me. He is the chief philosophical adviser to the World Economic Forum and one of the premiere authorities in WEF circles. They just hang on his every word. (quote from Patrick Wood)
The level of evil we are dealing with here is so intense that most Christians and conservatives have no idea how deep it goes and will frankly have trouble believing it. No politician is going to be able to save us from this evil, only Jesus Christ.
Another thing worth noting is that Harari is not only tied in with Schwab. He has a large following among Western elites. One of Hararis admirers is Barack Obama, the man who has the ear of Joe Biden. In fact, Obama has called Harari his favorite author.[ii]
Yuval Noah Harari is the man behind the curtain. Hes the driving force behind transhumanism, a key component of Schwabs Great Reset.
The elite regard transhumanism as the next step in the human evolutionary process. While all the other development advancements happened to us, they say, now we get to have a say in the future enhancements of our race. The combining of humans with machines is but another step in the continuing evolutionary progression of mankind.
Transhumanists are avid atheists who see themselves as aiding the evolution of humanity.
Do not let the proponents of the NWO or the Great Reset deceive you; they all accept transhumanism is an essential step to convince people of the need for world governance. Some of these globalists may profess a belief in God or allegiance to a church, but they are lying. They are all staunch atheists who reject all that Scripture says about creation, especially Genesis 1:27, God created man in his own image.
If there is one verse to keep in mind when thinking about the transhumanists, its John 8:44. In this verse, Jesus is confronting the Jews who opposed Him:
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
The proponents of the NWO are all Luciferian transhumanists that lack all respect for human life. They have already deceived a great many people with their lies.
Here are some quotes from Yuval Noah Harari that I took from interview clips Jan Markells bi-monthly Understanding the Times conference in Minneapolis on April 21, 2022. This event also featured Pastor Brandon Holthaus and Pastor Mark Henry. In these videos we watched Harari say the following:
Humans are now hackable animals that will be re-engineered.
Previously, government surveillance was above the skin, now its going under the skin.
The free will to choose who we vote for or what we buy in the supermarket, human free will, Thats over! (my emphasis)
Can you see the devaluation of human life bubbling to the top in these quotes? Previously, I have written at length about how we see this in abortion, infanticide, and the war in Ukraine. Now with Harari, we see the same murderous agenda and deception that Jesus talked about in John 8:44.
The transhumanists see us as hackable animals that they hope to enslave and totally control.
Harari also said this, which at first seems contradictory to his other declarations:
Humans are acquiring divine powers . . . and the power to re-engineer life.
So yes, he says that humans are acquiring divine powers, but perhaps its only for those in power rather than those that the elite hope to control. Transhumanism is about the masses worshipping them as gods. Is this not preparing the world for the coming man of lawlessness that Paul wrote about in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4?
Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
The spirit of the antichrist is alive and well in Harari. In one of the interviews that I referenced earlier, Harari referred to Jesus resurrection from the dead and His claim to be the Son of God as fake news.
Leo Hohmann is correct, we are dealing with a force thats far more evil, and I might add deadlier, than anything we can imagine. Jesus is our only hope for the time in which we live.
The Luciferian globalists are far along in their plans to bring about the NWO. It does not matter what the majority of people want, they have the power necessary to assert their control over our will. This happened with 2020 Presidential Election in America. It happened in 2021 with vaccine mandates that resulted in the deaths of a great many people. The riots that took place all through Paris on April 24, 2022, were in response to the reelection of Emanuel Macron, who many Parisians did not believe really won the election.
Once the elite put digital currencies in place across the world, it will be game over. They will have the control they need to begin tightening their stranglehold on humanity, which will lead to the beast government of the Tribulation period. As Harari stated as the goal of transhumanism, the will of the people no longer matters, thats over!
Now for the good news, the future tense of the Gospel: Scripture assures us that Jesus is coming to take us home to heaven before Gods wrath falls on this evil Christ-rejecting world (2 Thessalonians 5:1-11). We will be out of here long before the antichrist exerts his control over the coming NWO.
In contrast to what the world tells us is fake news, we indeed serve a risen Savior whose words are true and certain. He is the true Son of God and Hes coming very soon to take us to the place Hes preparing for us (John 14:2-3). We can be absolutely certain of this.
Our hope rests on a sure foundation: Jesus!!
If you desire greater confidence regarding the pretribulation Rapture, please consider purchasing my book, The Triumph of the Redeemed-An eternal Perspective that Calms Our Fears in Perilous Times. I spent over a thousand hours studying and researching the basis for our imminent hope so I could present a solid, biblical case for the pretribulation Rapture. You can find my book on Amazon. Thanks!!
Never forget: Jesus imminent appearing to take us home is the solid foundation of our hope in these perilous times.

Future Humans: Four Ways We May, or May Not, Evolve
Posted: at 1:00 am
Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, published 150 years ago Tuesday, opened the book on our evolutionary past, which has since been traced by scientists back to fossil apes.
But where is evolution taking us? Will our descendants hurtle through space as relatively unchanged as the humans on the starship Enterprise? Will they be muscle-bound cyborgs? Or will they chose to digitize their consciousnessesbecoming electronic immortals?
And as odd as the possibilities may seem, it's worth remembering that, 150 years ago, the ape-to-human scenario in On the Origin of Species struck many as nothing so much as monkey business.
"Because we have evolved, it's natural to imagine we will continue to do so, but I think that's wrong," anthropologist Ian Tattersall of New York's American Museum of Natural History said in an email.
"Everything we know about evolutionary change suggests that genetic innovations are only likely to become fixed in small, isolated populations," he said. For example, Darwin's famous Galpagos finches each evolved from their mainland ancestor to fit a unique habitat on the isolated islands in the Pacific.
Natural selection, as outlined in On the Origin of Species, occurs when a genetic mutationsay, resulting in a spine suited to upright walkingis passed down through generations, because it affords some benefit. Eventually the mutation becomes the norm.
But if populations aren't isolated, crossbreeding makes it much less likely for potentially significant mutations to become established in the gene pooland that's exactly where we are now, Tattersall said.
"Since the advent of settled life, human populations have expanded enormously. Homo sapiens is densely packed across the Earth, and individuals are unprecedentedly mobile.
"In this situation, the fixation of any meaningful evolutionary novelties in the human population is highly improbable." Tattersall said. "Human beings are just going to have to learn to live with themselves as they are."
Steve Jones, a genetics professor at University College London, put forward a similar scenario during a recent lecture series marking the bicentenary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species at the University of Cambridge.
The human population will become more alike as races merge, he said, but "Darwin's machine has lost its power."
That's because natural selectionDarwin's "survival of the fittest" conceptis being sidelined in humans, according to Jones.
The fittest will no longer spearhead evolutionary change, because, thanks to medical advances, the weakest also live on and pass down their genes.
When On the Origin of Species was published in 1859, only about half of British children survived to 21. Today that number has swelled to 99 percent.
In developed countries, "the fact that everybody stays alive, at least until they're sexually mature, means ['survival of the fittest' has] got nothing to work with," Jones said. "That part of the Darwinian fuel has gone."
Other scientists see plenty of evidence that human evolution is far from over.
For instance, a study published last month in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggested that women of the future could become shorter and stouter.
A team led by Yale University evolutionary biologist Stephen Stearns found that, due to ovulatory characteristics, shorter, slightly plumper women tend to have more children than their peers. These physical traits are passed on to their offspring, suggesting natural selection in humans is alive and well.
Geoffrey Miller, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of New Mexico, believes Darwinian evolution in humans is actually speeding up. He highlighted sexual selection through mate choice as one key driver.
"You still have powerful mate choice shaping mental traits particularly traits that are needed to succeed economically and in raising kids," Miller said.
"We're also going to get stronger sexual selection, because the more advanced the technology gets, the greater an effect general intelligence will have on each individual's economic and social success, because as technology gets more complex, you need more intelligence to master it," he said.
"That intelligence results in higher earnings, social status, and sexual attractiveness."
Miller added that artificial selection using genetic technologies will likely accentuate these changes in the future.
"Parents could basically choose which sperm and egg get to meet up to produce a baby based on genetic information about which genes contribute to which physical and mental traits," he said.
"If the rich and powerful keep the artificial-selection technology to themselves, then you could get that kind of split between a kind of upper-class, dominant population and a lower-class, genetically oppressed population," he added.
"But I think it's very likely the new genetic technologies will be widespread in their use, simply because that's more profitable. So I think there will actually be a leveling effect, where both the poor and the rich are going to be able to have the best kids they can genetically.
"You will probably see a rise in average physical attractiveness and health," he added. "You will probably get selection for physical traits that tend to be attractive in both males and femalesthings like height, muscularity, energy levels."
But "regular" natural selection will also continue to play a major role, Miller believes.
"What you're facing now is a global pathogen pool of viruses and bacteria that get spread around by air travel to every corner of the Earth, and that's going to increase," he said.
"We're going to get a lot more epidemics," Miller added. "That will increase the importance of the genetic immune system in human survival"and result in a human species with stronger immune systems, he speculated.
A philosophy known as transhumanism sees humans taking charge of their evolution and transcending their biological limitations via technology.
In essence, the old-fashioned evolution of On the Origin of Species may be beside the point: The future may belong to unnatural selection.
Nick Bostrom, director of the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford, said Darwinian evolution "is happening on a very slow time scale now relative to other things that are leading to changes in the human condition"cloning, genetic enhancement, robotics, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology, for starters.
Transhumanism raises a spectacular array of possibilities, from supersoldiers and new breeds of athletes to immortal beings who, having had their brains scanned atom by atom, transfer their minds to computers.
In addition to living forever, "uploaded" beings would be able to "travel at the speed of light as an information pattern," download themselves into robots for the occasional stroll through the real world, think faster when running on advanced operating systems, and cut their food budget down to zero, Bostrom imagines in his paper "The Transhumanist FAQ."
If that were to happen, a new type of evolution would emerge, Bostrom said.
"Evolutionary selection could occur in a population of uploads or artificial intelligence just as much as it could in a population of biological organisms," he told National Geographic News. "In fact, it might operate much faster there, because artificial intellects could reproduce much faster."
Whereas the current human generational cycle takes some 20 years, a digitalized individual could replicate themselves in seconds or minutes, Bostrom said.
Of course copying yourself isn't without complications, Bostrom acknowledges.
"Which one of them is you?" he writes. "Who owns your property? Who is married to your spouse?"
"Some major new isolating mechanism" would be needed for a new human species to arise, according to John Hawks, an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Despite up to 30,000 years of partial isolation among populations in places such as Australia and Papua New Guinea, human speciation did not occur, he noted.
But if, in the far distant future, habitable planets beyond our solar system were colonized by Earth migrants, that could provide the necessary isolation for new human species to evolve.
"If we had spacefaring people who went on one-way voyages to distant stars, that might be enough to trigger speciation," Hawks said.
But, he added, "if you think about it, a small group of people went on a one-way voyage to [the Americas] 14,000 years ago, and then when new people [Europeans] showed up 500 years ago, they were still the same species."

Crimes of the Future Explained: Transhumanism, Surgery as Sex, and Humanity’s Frightening Evolution – Signal Horizon
Posted: at 1:00 am
David Cronenberg is back, baby. Okay, he technically never went away for a long period, but hes returned to the body horror genre that he pioneered in the early 1970s. His latest, Crimes of the Future, is not as shocking as some of his most well-known horror classics like Shivers, Scanners, or even The Fly. However, it is thought-provoking with some new and familiar ideas at its center.
Cronenbergs latest feature tackles a lot, specifically transhumanism, technology, and this concept of surgery as a new form of sex/performance art. To understand much of what goes on in the film, its important to address some of these concepts.
Major spoilers below.
Set in the not-too-distant future, Crimes of the Futures first sequence shocks the most. The camera pans in on a boy, Brecken Dotrice (Sozos Sotiris), who digs on a beach. His mother, Djuna (Lihi Kornowski), warns him not to mess around with any waste he digs up. Her warnings make sense later. When she calls Brecken inside, he soon munches on a plastic trash can in the bathroom after brushing his teeth. This scene is both alarming and jarring. Cut to the next scene. When Brecken sleeps, his mom suffocates him with a pillow. So appalled by what her son is, she opts to kill him. To her, hes an utter monster, a freak of nature. This is made much clearer later. She tries to thwart humanitys potential evolution before it spreads.
The murder triggers the films subsequent events and numerous side plots. Brecken represents humanitys possible future as literal plastic consumers. Brecken is the first child born who possesses these genes. Other characters in the film, led by Breckens father, Lang (Scott Speedman), perform underground surgeries on themselves to speed up this evolution, so to speak. He and the others embrace plastic-eating. They even manufacture plastic candy bars to share with each other. The child is so unique, however, because hes the first one born with these genes, as far as they know.
Lang and his followers see this evolution as worthy of celebration, a form of transhumanism in which humans evolve to eat their own waste. They devour the industrial waste they create, merging with it, to an extent. To others, specifically government bureaucrats, however, this evolution needs to be stopped, or at the very least, kept from the public. They want to stomp out the truth at all costs.
Crimes of the Future contains a few side stories and subplots. Like film noir, characters double-cross each other. It can be tough to keep track. However, like some of Cronenbergs early work, government bureaucracy plays a key role. More specifically, theres a National Organ Registry launched to track everyones evolution and organ growth. This is led by Kristen Stewarts Timlin and Don McKellars Wippet. Anyone who grows a new organ must register it by allowing the duo to tattoo it. This is a way for the government to keep track of everything and, more likely, keep an eye out for plastic eaters.
Theres another government official played by Welket Bungue who wants to disrupt and stop Langs underground group. So whats the point of all of this, especially the role Bungue plays? The government wants to suppress information that humans are evolving into plastic munchers. Its why Langs group poses such a threat. They want to spread the news and embrace humanitys next phase, which sets up another key plot and theme. Why would plastic consumption be a bad thing if it cleans the planet?
Crimes of the Future has another key concept at its core: surgery as the new sex. In this dystopian world, humans have become numb. Theres the old sex, which people no longer practice. They dont feel anything anymore, including pain. They even have beds and chairs that adjust their bodies to maximize personal comfort. This is another example of transhumanism, in which this new form of technology melds with humans to aid their comfort. This furniture is nightmarish, with a skeleton-looking structure and tentacle-like arms that leech upon the skin. In this world, humans open themselves up to potentially fatal sensations, even death.
Viggo Mortensens Saul Tenser and Lea Seydouxs Caprice are darlings of the performance art world. They perform surgery on each other before a live audience and in private, a slice here, a slice there using weird gadgets. It becomes orgasmic, and its the only thing that gets them off. For the crowd, its like a peepshow, especially for Stewarts otherwise conservative, rigid, and frankly, very unnerving character. In this new world, people stab each other in the leg or watch Saul and Caprice perform surgery. Its the only titillating experience available when theyre so numb to everything else. Its the new and disturbing entertainment, the new sex.
Saul is like a stage-four cancer patient who speaks in rasps and covers himself from head to toe while in public to avoid illness. Somehow, his body produces new organs, making him an object of fascination for Timlin and Wippet. Caprice, a former trauma surgeon, removes his rogue organs live as part of their art. People film it and look on in heated fixation as if watching a porno.
By the third act, Saul and Caprice are offered a chance to perform their biggest surgery yet. After Djuna murders her son and before shes jailed, she leaves the body for Lang. Eventually, he offers the body to Caprice and Saul. He wants it cut open before a live crowd to expose the truth. What better way to do this than to turn it into Saul and Caprices popular art show? However, when the dynamic duo performs, they dont exactly discover insides filled with plastic. Timlin covered up the organs, replacing them with tattooed ones, to prevent the truth from reaching the public. Shes a sneaky, sneaky character indeed.
As the film progresses, Saul has more and more difficulty eating, despite his weird chair that adjusts his body to make the process easier. In the final shot, Caprice encourages him to eat one of the plastic bars. She slowly unwraps it and offers it to him. He initially resists but then munches it. Before the credits roll, its clear his body has changed to accept plastic. He can no longer digest regular food. Like the murdered boy, hes another example of this disturbing stage in human evolution.
The film concludes with more than a hint that this will be humanitys fate. Apparently, the government doesnt think people can handle the truth, hence why they messed with Breckens body, to stop the truth from coming out in a very public way. Its also why they set up the National Organ Registry, to monitor all new organs and leaps in evolution. Instead of rejecting this next stage, as Saul did previously by cutting out and rejecting new organs, he finally succumbs to it and embraces it.
Of Cronenbergs broad body of work, Crimes of the Future definitely scores in the better half of his films. He treads some familiar ground here, but it doesnt make the film any less thought-provoking. There are some disturbing images, but more chilling is a future where humans devour plastic and no longer feel anything, to the point they forgo sex because they need a riskier and potentially fatal sensation. Or maybe the film offers a small silver lining, a future where humans evolve to devour their own industrial waste, a positive as Lang sees it.

Which Sportsbooks Will Launch When Ohio Sports Betting Goes Live? – Bookies.com
Posted: at 1:00 am
It was surely a disappointment for Ohio sports betting fans to learn that legal sports wagering in the Buckeye State would not begin in time for the start of the 2022 football season. But there was also a silver lining within that newswhen Ohio sports betting does launch, it promises to do so in a very big way.
The extended run-up to the announced universal start date of Jan. 1, 2023the deadline by which the states new sports betting law must be enactedmeans that Ohio betting apps will begin taking bets on a New Years weekend loaded with major events. It also provides time for more online sportsbook operators to receive licenses from the state, promising bettors a wider range of options than some other states have seen on their launch days.
With nearly 12 million residents, Americas seventh-most-populous state promises to be a major U.S. sports betting market, and lots of sportsbook operators will want a piece of the action.
Thank you for signing up!
You've got mail. Check your inbox!
Sports betting was legalized in Ohio in December of 2021, after Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill that had been haggled over for three years in the state legislature. The law splits sports betting licenses into three classes, and allows for 25 of the top (or Type A) class that will be reserved for casinos or professional sports teams.
Each casino or sports team can partner with online sportsbooks operating up to two skins, industry parlance for a betting site like DraftKings Ohio and its associated mobile app.
So theres lots of room in the Ohio market for online platforms, promising bettors a bevy of alternatives.
At the moment, we expect the following sportsbooks to launch in Ohio (based on existing retail casino partnerships):
All the above are on track to launch in Ohio at this stage, with others sure to follow in the seven months before legal wagering in the state kicks off.
Compare that variety of options to sports betting in New York, which launched in a piecemeal fashion in January, with just four licensed sportsbooks on its launch day. Ohios launch day indeed promises to be a big onenot only is it an NFL Sunday (the next-to-last week of the regular season), but four big college bowl games (the Rose, Cotton, Citrus and Tampa Bay, formerly the Outback) are set for the following day.
The Ohio Casino Control Commission is accepting license applications in two windows spanning mid-June through mid-August, but some sportsbooks are already putting down Ohio roots.
Caesars Sportsbook Ohio announced in February that it would build a betting facility inside the Cleveland Cavaliers home arena, with a planned opening by the end of 2022. Likewise, Bally's Interactive (parent company of Bally Bet) announced plans in April for a branded lounge inside the stadium of the Cleveland Browns.
The launch of legal sports betting in a new state also means lots of promotional opportunities for bettors to take advantage of, many of them available through the use of promo codes.
These promos provide bettors with bonuses such as a deposit match or a risk-free bet, and the codes that activate them can regularly be found here at Bookies.com.
Because Ohio is still months away from launch, were not certain yet which Ohio promo codes will be available from which sportsbooks in the Buckeye State. But looking at past launches in other states provides a hint. In New York, for example, FanDuel Sportsbook offered new bettors in the Empire State $200 in free bets with an initial $5 wager, while DraftKings Sportsbook offered users a 20% deposit match up to $1,000. You may see something similar when DraftKings Ohio and FanDuel Ohio announce their launch plans later this year.
Caesars Sportsbook offered a risk-free bet up to $5,000, and BetMGM a risk-free bet up to $1,000. WynnBet offered $200 in free bets with a $50 wager, while BetRivers offered $250 in free bets with a $250 deposit.
Other hints come from national promos like that presented by Unibet, which is offering a $250 risk-free bet with a promo code. Keep checking Bookies.com for the latest on promo codes related to Ohios launch on Jan. 1, 2023.

Why Derrick Henry isn’t getting the proper respect from one sportsbook – AtoZ Sports
Posted: at 1:00 am
";} else{document.querySelector('#emp-6f2dc').innerHTML = "";}
There has been much debate throughout the course of the offseason over who the best running back in the NFL is. It wasnt until a Jones fracture sidelined Titans RB Derrick Henry for the final nine games of the 2021 season before Colts RB Jonathan Taylor entered the conversation.
BetMGM released its odds on who will finish the 2022 regular season with the most rushing yards. The list goes as follows:
Henry/Taylor +600
Dalvin Cook + 900
Nick Chubb/Elijah Mitchell/Joe Mixon +1400
Anthony Gibson + 1600
Najee Harris/Javonte Williams/Cam Akers +2000
Though Taylor took the rushing throne last season, Henry had a substantial lead at the time of his injury. Henry was on pace to secure his third-straight rushing title, showing no signs of slowing down before the fluke injury.
Taylor has received tons of buzz after finishing 2021 with 332 carries for 1,811 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. It was more than enough for the Colts back to receive All-Pro honors in just his second season.
Whenever King Henrys reign comes to an end, the torch will be passed to Taylor. But will that time come in 2022? Im not so sure.
Henry returned to action in the Titans AFC Divisional Round loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. While he did not look like the dominant player fans have become accustomed to seeing on Sundays, it was a promising sign that his unique injury wouldnt develop into a long-term issue.
Not only did Henry win back-to-back rushing crowns in 2019-2020, but his usage rate was also tops in the league. The Titans phenom eclipsed 300 carries in each of those seasons and showed no signs of slowing down, improving as the season went along.
Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing might opt to keep Henry on a leash early in the season. But with Tennessees offensive identity centered around running the football, Henry will undoubtedly get his touches.
Henry and Taylor both provide tons of value in the betting market with 6/1 odds. However, if I had to decide between the two Im sticking with Henry. When healthy, he has been nothing short of the games best running back and was threatening to top 2,000 yards in back-to-back seasons before going down last year.
To be the best, youve got to beat the best when hes healthy. The AFC South could very well be decided by which running back find the most success in 2022. Taylors time will come, but at 28 years old, I believe Henry still has a lot left in his tank.

Several PGA Sportsbook Partners Accept Bets On Saudi-Backed LIV Tour – Sports Handle
Posted: at 1:00 am
The launch of the LIV Golf Invitational Series has unleashed a maelstrom in global professional golf unlike any during Phil Mickelsons three decades playing on the PGA Tour.
On Monday, Mickelson ended his four-month sabbatical from the sport when he signed a lucrative deal with the Saudi Arabian-backed tour for a reported sum of around $200 million. Mickelson said he used the time off for a period of reflection, during whichan unauthorized biography about the six-time major winner was published chronicling his lengthy history of heavy gambling both on the course through high-stakes practice rounds and at the window through large wagers on the NFL.
With Mickelson as the face of the breakaway tour, several major U.S. sportsbooks have begun to accept wagers on this weeks LIV series debut taking place Thursday-Saturday at the Centurion Club in London. Bettors can wager on the event at DraftKings and PointsBet, each of which ironically enough maintains an official sports betting partnership with the PGA Tour. FanDuel Sportsbook, another PGA sportsbook partner, is not accepting wagers on the event in the U.S., a spokesman told Sports Handle.
BetMGM, an official sports betting partner of the PGA Tour, did not accept wagers on the Centurion tournament on Thursday, but did offer live odds on the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed, a DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) event in Sweden. Another prominent sportsbook operator, BetRivers, accepted wagers on the LIV golf event in Connecticut and Ontario.
When PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan met with several player agents last week at Muirfield Village Golf Club, he reportedly drew a red line concerning the eligibility of tour players who participate in LIV series events. Current PGA Tour players have the option of remaining on the tour or jumping to the Saudi-backed series, ESPN.com reported, but they cannot participate in both.
Launched in October 2021, the LIV series is backed by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. It ranks among the worlds largest funds, with total assets under management of about $600 billion. Greg Norman, a two-time major champion and a golf course designer, serves as the CEO of LIV Golf Investments, which is providing more than $400 million in seed money to launch the series.
It is unclear if the PGA Tour sought to have its official sportsbook partners refrain from offering betting on the inaugural LIV event. While U.S. books have posted odds on international, non-PGA Tour events in the past, it does not appear that there is contractual language in the agreements that preclude the PGAs sportsbook partners from booking action on rival leagues.
Representatives from two U.S. sportsbook operators told Sports Handle last week that they had not been advised by the PGA Tour on any betting matters related to the event at the Centurion Club.
When reached by Sports Handle on Tuesday, a PGA Tour spokesman declined comment.
Enticed by massive appearance fees and record purses, the LIV series also lured major champions Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, and Martin Kaymer, as well as Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Kevin Na.
Still, Norman was unable to land a 20-something star such as Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, or Jordan Spieth, all of whom have captured majors since 2016. The series reportedly targeted the biggest names in golf, as Mickelson noted that practically every player in the Top 100 of the world had been contacted at some point. More pointedly, Micklelson told author Alan Shipnuck that he enlisted three top players to join the series, although he did not name them.
In February, SuperBook Sports took betting action on the PIF Saudi Invitational, an Asian Tour event sponsored by the sovereign wealth fund. Despite a talented field that included Xander Schauffele, Cameron Smith, Tommy Fleetwood, Mickelson, and Johnson, the handle for the event paled in comparison to a typical PGA Tour tournament, said Jeff Sherman, vice president of risk management at SuperBook Sports.
For us, its like booking the NFL versus the USFL, Sherman said. Its just a minimal handle on all these other events.
Ahead of the Centurion event, the LIV series has yet to name an official betting partner. LIV Golf could also generate millions by outsourcing its in-game data feed to a third-party provider, as the PGA Tour has done with IMG Arena.
An LIV spokesperson did not respond to a request from Sports Handle for comment.
Although the series debut will be available with free livestreaming on LIVGolf.com, YouTube, and Facebook, the absence of a network broadcast partner could also affect handle, said Sherman, who serves as head golf oddsmaker at the SuperBook. For majors, the SuperBook offers a wide menu of offerings including Top 5, Top 10, and Top 20 finishers, head-to-head matchups, and in-house live odds. The SuperBook may limit LIV offerings this week to the outright winner only, Sherman indicated, due to lack of interest among bettors.
BetRivers, meanwhile, is offering a full menu of betting offerings on the London, event including:
There is some sentiment that large global corporations should not conduct business with LIV Golf, considering that Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman serves as the chairman of the Public Investment Fund. In March, Saudi Arabia authorized the execution of 81 men, according to Human Rights Watch, a New York-based non-governmental organization, in the kingdoms largest mass execution in years. Saudi Arabia also ranked 155th out of 165 jurisdictions in the Cato Institutes 2021 Human Freedom Index, which weighs factors such as the rule of law, security and safety, freedom of expression, the right to properly assemble, and property rights.
The CIA previously concluded that the prince ordered the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018, charges that Bin Salman has vehemently denied. The golf series is part of Bin Salmans Vision 2030 plan, one he believes has modernized Saudi Arabia with changes such as the legalization of cinemas and the abolition of a longstanding ban on women from driving.
Mickelson signed with LIV Golf despite his inflammatory comments concerning the Saudi regime months ago.
Theyre scary motherf***ers to get involved with, Shipnuck reported Mickelson told him in November 2021. We know they killed Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Im not sure I even want [LIV Golf] to succeed.
From a commercial perspective, some parallels can be drawn between the reported human rights violations in Saudi Arabia and Russias invasion of Ukraine. U.S. sportsbooks generally stopped taking action on Russian sports events after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion in late February.
Sports bettors who are appalled by the Saudi kingdoms record on human rights may respond by boycotting the new golf series. Following the London opener, there are seven other events on the 2022 schedule, including five in the U.S.
Its not being played in [the Saudi] regime, its being played in London that could be a differentiator, a spokesperson for a major U.S. sportsbook operator said of the opener.
While participating golfers were mostly reticent to tackle questions on the Saudi regime this week, one tried to separate the athletic endeavors from the moral issues surrounding the kingdom.
If we tried to cure geopolitical situations in every country we play golf in, we wouldnt play a lot of golf, said Graeme McDowell, of Northern Ireland, at a Tuesday press conference.
Mickelson still intends to participate in golfs majors, beginning with this months U.S. Open in Brookline, Massachusetts, on June 16. Johnson, the 2016 U.S. Open winner, receives an exemption for the national championship through at least 2025. On Tuesday, the USGA added a wrinkle to the ongoing narrative when it allowed qualified players who were participating in the London event to remain in the U.S. Open field.
Mickelson, who skipped The Masters and the PGA Championship, last played on the PGA Tour in January when he missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. At SuperBook Sports, Mickelson has odds of 30/1 to win this weeks event in London.
Mickelson has steeper odds than Sam Horsfield, Justin Harding, and Matt Jones, none of whom has notched a Top 10 finish in a major. The trio have five European Tour wins combined, along with only two victories on the PGA Tour. Mickelson is tied for eighth all-time in PGA Tour career victories with 45.
When youre away from the game that long, youre not going to step in and be that competitive, Sherman told Sports Handle.
The SuperBook has installed Johnson as the favorite at 5/1, followed by Talor Gooch and Oosthuizen, at 9/1 and 10/1, respectively. Johnson is also favored to win the event at DraftKings.
DraftKings is taking action on the event in a handful of jurisdictions, including Arizona, Ontario, Connecticut, and Wyoming. As of Wednesday morning, a decision on whether to allow bets on LIV Golf had yet to be made public by the Colorado Division of Gaming.
Each of the first seven events has a purse of $25 million, with the season finale in Miami doubling the amount to $50 million. On Wednesday, SI.com reported that major winners Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed are set to join LIV Golf for the first U.S. event at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland on June 30. LIV Golf has events scheduled in three states with legalized sports betting: Illinois, New Jersey, and Oregon.

IGT and SuperBook expand sportsbook platform partnership to a fourth state with Tennessee – Yogonet International
Posted: at 1:00 am
International Game Technology (IGT) announced Wednesday it has extended its partnership with operator SuperBook Sports to Tennessee, where the IGT PlaySports platform is powering the SuperBook Sports mobile betting app.
This is the fourth state where IGT and SuperBook Sports have teamed up to deliver a performance-driving sports betting solution. SuperBook Sports is currently leveraging IGT PlaySports technology to power retail and mobile betting in Colorado, and mobile betting in New Jersey and Arizona.
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council (TSWAC) cleared SuperBook, affiliated with the Las Vegas Hilton and Westgate resorts, to run online sports betting operations in March.
In an official press release, Jay Kornegay, SuperBook Executive Vice President, spoke about this expanded alliance and said: "Over the last two years, IGT PlaySports has played a strategic role in helping SuperBook Sports engage sports fans across the U.S. and achieve our growth goals. We're excited to bring the SuperBook Sports mobile betting app to Tennessee and to introduce players throughout the State to our signature promotions and highly competitive, localized sports betting offering."

IGT was recently named Sports Betting Platform Provider of the Year in the 2021 SBC North America Awards, with a sports betting footprint spanning 20+ U.S. states and into Canada. It also became the first US supplier to receive G4 responsible gaming accreditation for sports betting in April this year.

How to Make a 2022 NFL Futures Bet at a Sportsbook: Team Win Totals – BettingPros
Posted: at 1:00 am
The summer is here, and the start of the NFL season will be here before we know it. Now is the time to start digging into NFL futures, both for team futures and player futures. NFL futures can be great ways to profit during the upcoming season. Well have you covered throughout the offseason with updated news and odds for all futures and Week 1 odds. Lets take a look at how to make a 2022 NFL futures bet at a sportsbook.
Check out our NFL Futures Betting Guide >>
What are Team Futures?
Futures refers to any team-based wager for a future event or a result. These bets often do not pay out until weeks or even months from when they are originally placed. Bets for Win Totals and the Super Bowl winner are good examples of team futures bets.
What are Player Futures?
Player futures refer to any player-based wager for a future event or a result. These bets often do not pay out until weeks or even months from when they are originally placed. Most player futures are built around a specific statistic, where bettors determine whether that player will come in above or below the oddsmakers total. They often open with odds at -110 but are adjusted based on where the majority of bets are placed.
Types of futures bets
Futures markets offer a wide variety of betting opportunities. They differ between sportsbooks but many sportsbooks offer at least a few of the same type of futures bets. The most common are championship winner, division/conference winner, and end-of-season awards. Sportsbooks also offer season-long win totals and specials such as who will be the first coach fired or who will be the first overall pick. The most popular NFL futures markets are Super Bowl Winner and Most Valuable Player. These odds are released early in the NFL offseason and fluctuate constantly up until the start of the NFL season and after each week of games. The NFL draft has seen a growing futures market that can be very profitable. Sportsbooks give odds on a ton of NFL draft-related events such as over/under pick number, how many cornerbacks will be drafted in the first round, what position will the Patriots select, etc. Another market dripping with value is season-long player props.
Futures odds
Oddsmakers have to assign a probability to every event in the futures market. They use a lot of strategies to do this and the process can be technical and objective or for a market such as Will Kirk Cousins be the Vikings quarterback next year, the process can be subjective and include a lot of guesswork. This provides opportunities to find value for bettors. If the Buccaneers have implied odds of 15% to win the Super Bowl, but you give them a 20% chance, then there is value on betting the Buccaneers in the futures market.

Sports betting in Texas: When it will be legalized, how to bet online, where to find picks, optimal promos – CBS Sports
Posted: at 1:00 am
Online sports betting is sweeping the country, and sports fans in Texas are eagerly waiting to see if their state will be the next to legalize it. Efforts to legalize online sports betting in the Lone Star State were squashed in 2021, but some experts believe Texas online sports betting could become a reality in 2023, and one of the most successful spots for online sportsbooks in the country. There is even one candidate for governor who said he will back online sports betting in Texas if he is elected. Texans love their sports teams, so there is no doubt Texas online sportsbooks would be very successful. With so many sports to watch and wager on, online sportsbook sign-up offers and online sportsbook promotion codes are bound to be very popular.
Before Texas online sportsbooks get the go-ahead, new bettors should be familiar with common online sportsbook terminology. Here is a guide to sports betting terms from our friends at SportsLine that will help you get ready in case Texas online sportsbooks become a reality.
There are several ways you can make sports wagers both online and in retail sportsbooks and plenty of bet types you'll want to familiarize yourself with.
Proposition bet: Want to bet on something other than the score of a game? A prop bet is a wager on a given outcome within a game or match other than the final score. For example, a prop bet in pro baseball could be on whether a player for Texas hits a home run, or whether a starting pitcher for Houston can make it through seven innings in a big game.
Live-betting: Texas online sportsbooks of the future will let you wager on your favorite sports in real-time thanks to live in-game odds updates. During the baseball season, online sportsbooks in Texas will let you wager on live-updated totals or even the outcome of the next at-bat. With both Houston and Texas playing competitive baseball, there will always be an opportunity for Texas sports fans to place exciting live bets on the home teams.
Over-under: This betting method is perfect for when you think a game or match will have a very high or very low score, like in pro basketball. Sportsbooks will set a total number of points expected for a game and then bettors decide which side of that number the combined scores will land on. So, if the over-under for a pro basketball playoff game between Boston and Golden State is 200, you can bet on whether the total of the two scores will be more or less than 200.
