Possible Chinese Invasion of Taiwan Snagged by Ukraine War: Ex-NATO Chief – Newsweek
Posted: June 11, 2022 at 1:45 am
The West's collective response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine may have delayed China's plans to attack Taiwan, former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.
"That's also one of the reasons why the Chinese are not comfortable with the Russian attack on Ukraine, because China has learned that the West can actually unite on delivery of weapons to Ukraine, on severe, crippling sanctions against Russia," Rasmussen told Newsweek on Wednesday.
"And the Chinese realize that they could be subject to exactly the same treatment if they were to attack Taiwan."
Rasmussen was NATO secretary-general from 2009 to 2014, and prime minister of Denmark for eight years before that. He is hosting the two-day Copenhagen Democracy Summit on June 9 and 10.
More than 100 days since President Vladimir Putin of Russia launched a full-scale military campaign against Ukraine, China watchers have speculated on whether the Kremlin's adventurism would embolden Beijing to attempt something similar.
The United States has committed tens of billions in military aid to Kyiv, but the Biden administration made it clear that no American troops would be involved in a direct clash with Russian forces.
When it comes to Taiwan, a democratic island coveted by the Chinese leadership for decades, Washington had been more ambiguous about its potential responseuntil President Joe Biden appeared to break that taboo last month.
Speaking in Tokyo on a tour of Asia, Biden answered "yes" when asked whether the U.S. would "get involved militarily to defend Taiwan," even though he believed an invasion wouldn't be attempted.
The president's rationale has links to Ukraine, too, and spoke to a need for Washington to demonstrate resolve in the face of growing Chinese pressure against Taiwan.
"The idea that [Taiwan] can be taken by force...is just not appropriate. It will dislocate the entire region and be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine," Biden said. "And so it's a burden that is even stronger."
Rasmussen believes the president's off-the-cuff comments will now factor into Beijing's thinking when it comes to Taiwan.
"Biden spoke from his heart, when hefor the second timeexpressed the policy that if Taiwan is attacked by mainland China, the U.S. will help and defend Taiwan. So for the Chinese, this is a very delicate situation," said the ex-NATO chief.
"And the bottom line is that the war in Ukraine has postponed the timing of a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan. Not stopped."
President Xi Jinping of China has articulated a vision of "reunification" with Taiwan by the middle of the century, the former Danish PM said.
"That is in 2049. And the Chinese are very patient people. So I think it's still their ambition to get this reunification and, if need be, by force. But it has become much more complicated now."
U.S. officials including CIA Director William Burns believe Beijing was surprised by Moscow's initial struggles in its now protracted siege on Kyiv, so much so that they may have changed China's own calculusbut not its determination regarding its designs on Taiwan.
Analysts believe these lessons relate to its strategic approach rather than its timeline or political objectives. In April, Taiwan's defense minister, Chiu Kuo-cheng, said the war would change Beijing's invasion playbook.
"The Russia-Ukraine war has informed all countries, including our own, and our enemy is no exception," said Chiu. "We must continue to monitor [the situation] closely. We have a very good opportunity to learn, and we will use it."
Biden's remarks may have reinforced the Chinese assumption about intervention by the U.S. and others. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is certain to be pressed on the subject while in Singapore, where he plans to meet China's defense minister, Gen. Wei Fenghe, on the sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue this weekend.
Rasmussen's views on China's delayed invasion plans aren't shared across the board. Senior U.S. defense officials traveling to Asia this week told reporters they didn't see any meaningful changes in Beijing's timeline resulting from the war in Ukraine.
"We have substantial concerns about China's growing capabilities and the changing intensions in the Indo-Pacific, including around Taiwan, but don't think that Ukraine has been a substantial factor in accelerating or reducing that activity," one official said.

HMS Prince of Wales arrives in Spain ahead of NATO workout – Naval Today
Posted: at 1:45 am
Royal Navys biggest warship, Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, has arrived in Spain ready for the exercises in the Mediterranean and Atlantic as NATOs command ship.
As disclosed, the vessel departed Portsmouthin May and arrived on 9 June in Rota on Spains west coast ahead of joint training led by Spain.
The warship will be at heart of a multinational task force, but will first stop in the Bay of Cadiz port to prepare for the forthcoming exercises.
Continuing HMS Prince of Wales journey as the NATO command ship for 2022 by operating with our Spanish allies emphasizes that as an alliance, NATO continues to operate in defence of its citizens and territory, Captain Richard Hewitt, who only took command of the Portsmouth-based strike carrier last month, said.
HMS Prince of Wales will be involved in Spanish-led exercises, known as Flotilla Exercise 22, which will see navies from five nations test their ability to react to crises together over the coming weeks.
It will involve a large contingent of Spanish warships plus NATO task groups (Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2) which are responsible for the security of the Mediterranean region.
It comes as NATOs annual Baltic exercise BALTOPS 22 begins, and the drill includes seven Royal Navy ships led by Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender.
Before heading to Spain, HMS Prince of Wales worked with the Royal Navys two Merlin Crowsnest helicopters for the first time.
Two helicopters trained alongside the ship to provide airborne surveillance and the control of other aircraft (known as ASaC) for the Royal Navys new aircraft carriers.
Osprey tiltrotors made an appearance on the ship, while Two anti-submarine warfare helicopters from Culdrose-based 820 Naval Air Squadron also trained aircrew in operating from the ship.

In front of Finland’s Consulate office in Murmansk appears anti-NATO banner with Nazi undertone – The Independent Barents Observer
Posted: at 1:45 am
It was a carefully planned and extraordinarily hostile stunt that on the 8th of June shook the diplomatic staff of Finlands Consulate in Murmansk. On the fence in front of the consulate building in downtown Murmansk appeared a banner that depicted two consulate staff members on a background of the Finnish flag, the NATO emblem, ammunition boxed destined for Ukraine and the text: Goodbye Russia. Heil NATO.
One of the staff members is Lari Peltonen, the leader of the diplomatic office. He is shown with what appears to be a Nazi officer cap. A gunsight is aimed against his forehead.
In addition to the poster, someone has inscribed NATO Territory on the street sidewalk.
It is not clear who made the banner and painted the street asphalt, but it is clearly a carefully prepared action. It comes only a day after former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev in extraordinary manners called western neighbours bastards and scum.Representatives of the consulate told SeverPost that the banner was gone when they arrived to the office Wednesday morning. But newspapers and social media in Murmansk has abundant references to the case.
A note on one of the biggest VK pages in the region shows photos from site and is accompanied by a number of anti-Finnish reader comments.
Finlands recent decision to join NATO has sparked anti-Finnish statements from the Russian establishment. In a telephone conversation in May, Vladimir Putin told Finnish President Sauli Niinisto that NATO membership couldnegatively affect bilateral relations.
In a comment to the Barents Observer, the consulate staff says the incident will be addressed withlocal authorities.

Whether we realize it or not, memory is an essential cognitive function we use every day as we're driving to the store, dialing a phone number we know by heart, or recalling a new co-worker's name so we can give a friendly greeting in the office.
Memory supplements can help support these daily activities.* But not all memory supplements are created equal. That's why we asked mindbodygreen's vice president of scientific affairs Ashley Jordan Ferira, Ph.D., RDN, to scour the market to find the 16 best memory supplements available today.
Do memory supplements work?
There's a lot of skepticism regarding memory supplements floating around the internet, so let's address the elephant in the room: Yes, memory supplements work.
Do they magically restore your memories or provide superhuman cognitive abilities? No, of course not. As cool as it would be to live in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where magic and superpowers exist, we prefer to lean on science here.
And scientifically speaking, there are both preclinical studies (i.e., animals) and clinical trials (i.e., humans) that show that many nutrients, botanicals, and bioactives featured in dietary supplements demonstrate statistical and clinical significance for memory, recall, and related brain outcomes (e.g., learning, processing, retention, and cognitive performance).*
That said, memory supplements are not designed to reverse specific brain health concerns but rather support memory and promote overall brain function. We're talking proactive cognitive support and brain longevity, hereand the earlier the better!*
Yes, memory supplements work. But to work effectively, they need to include efficacious doses of premium forms of nutrients, botanicals, and bioactives with scientific evidence that demonstrates they optimize brain health and cognitive function in some capacity.*
Vitamins and other ingredients that support memory.
There's a wide variety of neuronutrientsincluding vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and other bioactivesthat demonstrate nootropic mechanisms (i.e., they promote brain health and function in one or more ways).
In addition to cognitive benefits such as focus, attention, concentration, alertness, cerebral blood flow, mood support, stress resilience, and neurotransmitter synthesis, many of these ingredients have a specific effectwhether direct or indirecton memory creation, recall, and retention.
Board-certified neurologist and environmental toxicologist Ilene Ruhoy, M.D., Ph.D., encourages her clients to utilize nootropic supplements to complement their holistic health habits. "Clean foods, movement, meditation, and spending time in nature are critical for brain nutrition, regeneration, and longevity," she explains. "As part of my integrative approach to neurology, I also value smart, holistic formulas that nourish and support brain function and elevate cognitive potential, regardless of stage in life."
Here are some key types of nootropic ingredients, plus specific examples of how they promote memory and overall cognitive function.
Vitamins
Many vitaminsincluding vitamin C, vitamin D3, vitamin K, and B vitamins (especially B6, B9, and B12)demonstrate nootropic mechanisms by regulating neurotransmitter production, aiding in the methylation cycle, and promoting anti-inflammatory actions.*
For example, in a 2016 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study, participants with lower vitamin B12 levels had suboptimal memory performance (even when their B12 levels were considered to be in a "normal" range). Researchers believe this is because vitamin B12 helps promote microstructural integrity of the hippocampus, which is a major part of the brain that helps us process and retrieve memories.*
Minerals
Another unique set of micronutrients, mineralssuch as magnesium, calcium, zinc, and ironplay a role in brain health by promoting neurotransmitter synthesis, mitochondrial function, cellular signaling, and more.*
In a 2010 preclinical study published in Neuron, researchers discovered that increased levels of magnesium L-threonate in the brain improved short-term neuroplasticity, long-term potentiation (i.e., synapse signaling), and both learning and memory functions in rats.*
Amino acids
The essential building blocks of proteins throughout our body, amino acids also have a profound effect on neurotransmitter synthesis, helping regulate everything from mood to motivation in the brain.*
For example, L-tyrosine is a precursor for the neurotransmitter dopamine, which plays a part in mental energy, motivation, and happiness. According to a 2013 Frontiers review, increasing your L-tyrosine intake (through diet or supplementation) can help promote working memory updates which are the brain's "screening system" to decide whether or not new information is worth holding on to.* (Pretty cool, huh?)
In addition to L-tyrosine, here are some other amino acids that promote memory and overall cognitive function:*
Botanicals
We believe in the healing power of plants at mbg, and when it comes to nootropic mechanismsboy do botanicals deliver! Ranging from ancient Indigenous plants to adaptogenic mushrooms and Ayurvedic herbs, these dynamic plants promote myriad brain health benefitsincluding increased stress resilience, enhanced executive function, and improved memory (just to name a few).*
"Evidence-based botanicals with nootropic actions are one of my specialties as a naturopathic health care practitioner. One of the most exciting botanicals in the cognitive arena is the South African succulent Sceletium tortuosum (aka kanna)," shares Jeremy Appleton, N.D., director of scientific and medical affairs at PLT Health Solutions Inc. "The clinically researched and patented Zembrin extract promotes mental agility and calm, at the same time. Through its impact on serotonin levels, brain waves, and neurocircuitry, this unique plant extract helps reduce reactivity to stress, elevates executive function, and enhances cognitive flexibility."*
According to a 2017 study on older adults from the World Journal of Neuroscience, kanna's ability to influence brain activity affects a number of emotional and cognitive processesincluding memory and attention.*
And kanna is only the edge of the nootropic botanical garden. Here are some other powerhouse plants that support memory and other cognitive functions:*
Phytonutrients
Phytonutrients (aka phytochemicals) are organic compounds intrinsic to and sourced from botanicals. You're likely already familiar with a few of these plant bioactivesor their benefits, at least.
Caffeine is an ancient, widely consumed phytonutrient found in foods and beverages like coffee, tea, and cacao that many people are intimately familiar with and utilize for its energizing benefits. Targeted supplements with sustained-release caffeine are also a more novel, innovative offering in the world of energizing phytonutrients.*
Other phytonutrients might not be as well known by name, like curcumin. If you've heard of turmeric root's anti-inflammatory properties, you can thank curcuminthe principal curcuminoid in turmericfor its whole-body health benefits (including your noggin).*
When it comes to memory support, the red-wine-famous phytonutrient resveratrol (which can be derived from fermentation or Japanese knotweed to be used in supplements) is especially beneficial.*
In a 2020 Nutrients study, resveratrol supplementation was found to improve verbal memory in postmenopausal women.* Researchers believe this benefit is largely due to resveratrol's antioxidant and cerebrovascular properties; indeed, because it brings blood to the brain and keeps free radicals out, resveratrol has been found to be universally helpful for cognitive function and brain longevity.*
Here are some additional phytonutrients that support memory and brain function:*
Other neuronutrients
There are a few compounds that don't fit so neatly into the categories above but still deserve a seat at the table of nootropics.
Neuronutrient citicoline (aka CDP-choline) is massively beneficial to promoting and maintaining cognitive functionanytime but especially later in life.* In a 2021 study on healthy older adults published in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that citicoline supplementation (specifically, Cognizin) enhanced overall memory, with significant improvements in episodic memory.*
Award-winning cognitive health researcher and lead author of the study Eri Nakazaki, Ph.D., shares that powerhouse neuronutrient citicoline boasts a robust body of published scientific evidence. "This nootropic has impressive efficacy to nourish and promote our brain and executive functionsupporting the structure and function of our neurons, neurotransmitter levels (especially acetylcholine), and diverse cognitive metrics spanning brain energy, attention, memory, and cognitive performance."*
Phospholipidsthink phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholineand other key phospholipid precursors (citicoline) or constituents (brain-centric omega-3 fats EPA and DHA) are incredibly vital to overall brain function.* They help maintain the structure, function, and integrity of cellular membranes, which make up the outer layer of all cells (including those in the brain like neurons and glia).*

Chock-full of plant bioactives, this formula targets multiple brain mechanisms, from promoting healthy levels of neurotransmitter acetylcholine to supporting neuronal function and the transmission of nerve impulses (so your brain can stay sharp and send all those important messages!).*
Form: capsule
Dietary considerations: GMO-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free, vegan/vegetarian
Magnesium is an essential macromineral that's needed throughout the body (and yes, the brain) every day to support a slew of physiological functions. The problem? Many Americans don't get enough magnesium. This brain-focused magnesium supplement offers 144 milligrams of magnesium in a highly absorbable form developed by MIT researchers that has been shown to deposit greater amounts of the essential mineral in brain tissue: magnesium L-threonate. This magnesium supplement helps maintain synaptic connections, bolster neuronal integrity, improve executive and cognitive function, and support both short- and long-term memory. Since healthy levels of the mineral are challenging to sustain as we age, supplementing with magnesium can be especially beneficial to healthy brain aging and longevity (whether you take it in college or retirement!).*
Form: powder
Dietary considerations: USDA certified organic, GMO-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free, vegan/vegetarian
Environmental impact: sustainably sourced, sustainably packaged

How Effective Are Live Roulette Strategies? – Scified
Posted: at 1:44 am
People all around the globe enjoy playing their favorite casino games online, making it one of the most popular businesses. Roulette is one of those large games that are quite popular among online gamers; you can never walk into a casino without seeing the buzz and excitement surrounding this legendary game.
The popularity of Roulette has been transferred to online casinos and developed its version there with a large variety of Roulette online games and alternatives, gaining significant respect and broad appeal among online players who like playing Roulette games.
There are many live roulette methods available, but only a handful of them are effective. While live Roulette is a game of chance in which it is difficult to anticipate where the ball will fall at any given time, there are a few actions you may take to improve your chances of winning. In a game of chance, utilizing a roulette strategy does not ensure that you will win, but it may help you reduce your losses and give you a chance to win.
You should consider the first live roulette method by selecting the appropriate wheel; a European wheel has only one green pocket numbered zero, but an American wheel has two, giving the casino and you a disadvantage. As a result, playing on a European wheel is recommended.
To be effective, roulette methods must have a few crucial elements: the ability to repeat the strategy. Because Roulette has a bigger "house advantage" than other games like blackjack, money management is also important in a roulette strategy. Some players use a "negative-progression strategy" or "doubling strategy" and double their wager each time they lose. This is a risky approach since it will almost certainly raise your total losses, and a single victory may merely lead you back to square one. The "Martingale method," which incorporates money management and doubling up, is the most popular and oldest roulette technique.
One sure-fire winning roulette approach for a newbie is to play for pleasure. Many gaming sites on the internet allow you to play Roulette for free. The Blackjack Variations Giving a New Lease of Life to the Popular Card Game – UrbanMatter
Posted: at 1:43 am
The origin of blackjack remains disputed, but it is generally accepted that it first appeared in France during the 1760s when it was referred to as Vingt-et-Un or Twenty-one. Modern blackjack features a number of changes that differentiate the card game from the original and online versions of blackjack have taken the innovations to a whole new level.
There is now a wide variety of blackjack variations available online and the innovations on offer to those who play online blackjack at Paddy Power, for example, include Buster Blackjack, Cashback Blackjack, Live Majority Rules Speed Blackjack, and Live Quantum Blackjack. It is important to understand the rules of these variations on the traditional card game, so lets take a look at the blackjack games in more detail.
Buster Blackjack gives players the opportunity to place a side bet and win if the dealer goes bust, meaning loses money per Webster. The traditional rules of blackjack apply, but the innovation is that if players place a side bet, they win at 2:1 if the dealer is bust with three or four cards. If the dealer goes bust with more than four cards, they win at odds of 4:1. The chance of a big payout of 2,000:1 arises if the player gets blackjack and the dealer is bust with eight or more cards.
Cashback Blackjack is an innovative game that combines blackjack with the TV game show Deal or No Deal. The variation on traditional blackjack is that there is the opportunity to place bonus bets. Players can bet on 21+3 and cash in if the first three cards dealt in the game create a ranked poker hand, for example, three of a kind. There is also a pair bet, which pays up to 25:1 if you are dealt two of the same cards. The real innovation is that when a player has received their cards, they have the option of selecting the cashback button and they will receive an offer of cashback.
In this blackjack variant, players join forces to decide whether to hit, stand or double based on a majority vote. Players have the opportunity to bet on one or two hands and when the time comes to make a decision, players simply make their choice and wait to see what the majority of players have decided is the best course of action.
Live Quantum Blackjack follows the traditional rules of blackjack, but the game includes an innovation in the form of multiplier cards. Before each round begins, between one and three multiplier cards are revealed on the top right of the screen. The multiplier cards can multiply your wins by 3X, 5X, or 10X. If the hand you are dealt features the same card as a multiplier card, your winnings are multiplied by the specified amount. If your winning hand matches more than a single multiplier card, your prize will be increased by multiplying both multiplier cards, for example, 3X10. If you have a winning hand and it matches all three multiplier cards, your payout will be boosted by 1,000X.
Hopefully, you now understand how some of the latest blackjack variations work and you have had a chance to decide which variant would be best for you. New blackjack innovations are appearing all the time as the highly competitive online casino industry continues to develop more products. But you can also be assured that the traditional objective of getting as close to 21 as possible without going bust, will always form the main part of the game.

Casino supervisor tells court that former MP became agitated over blackjack losses – National Post

OTTAWA An operations supervisor at Casino Lac Leamy told an Ottawa courtroom Thursday that former Liberal MP Raj Grewal got so agitated playing blackjack four years ago, the incident was written up in a formal security report.

Grewal was charged by the RCMP in September 2020 with four counts of breach of trust and one of fraud over $5,000. His lawyer said in a written statement Thursday two of those charges were withdrawn by the Crown on Monday, the first day of Grewals trial.
Nader Hasan said a third charge was withdrawn before the trial began.
The prospect of a trial has hung over Mr. Grewals head for a long time, Hasan said. We will present a vigorous defence over the coming weeks, and we feel confident that Mr. Grewals complete innocence on these breach of trust charges will become clear for all to see.
The trial is being heard by a judge alone, and is expected to last until late July. Grewal, who lives in the Toronto area, was in the courtroom for the trial Thursday, sitting quietly behind his lawyers.

Grewal parted ways with the Liberals in the fall of 2018 just three years after first being elected. He sat as an Independent MP for a Brampton, Ont., riding until the 2019 election, in which he did not run.
Days after his split from the Liberals, Grewal issued a video statement in which he said he had a gambling addiction and had racked up millions of dollars in debt. He claimed the debts were all repaid, adding that nothing sinister had taken place.
The RCMP launched a criminal probe into Grewals gambling in 2017 after Canadas Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre, or Fintrac, sent the RCMP some suspicious transaction reports related to Grewal.
The charges laid in September 2020 stemmed from allegations he used his position as an MP to solicit millions of dollars in loans he did not disclose to the ethics commissioner, and misused his MP office budget.

The federal ethics commissioner launched an investigation into Grewals disclosures in early 2018 but that investigation was suspended when the criminal charges were laid and will not resume until the case is concluded.
Grewal, 36, said in 2018 that he started gambling recreationally after university, and that in 2016, shortly after being elected as an MP, he began to frequent the Casino Lac Leamy in Gatineau, Que., while he stayed at the attached hotel.
He said the recreational gambling morphed into an addiction for which he sought treatment in 2018.
At the trial Thursday, Jacques Bouchard, an operations supervisor at Casino Lac Leamy, said he had seen Grewal in the casino a few times, but that on May 30, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. he witnessed Grewal playing blackjack and becoming very agitated.

He filed a security investigation report as a result of the incident. The report included some of the comments Bouchard said he overheard from Grewal, including that Grewal felt he should be winning if he got to 19 or 20 points.
Come on, have an ace, the report quotes Grewal as having said that day. Take all my money.
The report also quotes Grewal as saying, Why didnt I left after the first 100K?
Under cross-examination, Hasan got Bouchard to acknowledge that the comments in quotations may not be perfectly accurate, noting a native English speaker would not have used the grammatically incorrect phrase Why didnt I left.
Bouchard said that could be the case, but added English is not his first language. He testified in court with the use of an interpreter.
The trial continues next week.

Hard Hand in Blackjack? 8 Simple Strategies to Deal With Them – BestUSCasinos.org
Posted: at 1:43 am
The first thing most casino gambling beginners learn is how real money blackjack can be played perfectly using basic strategy* charts. First developed way back in the 1950s, blackjacks basic strategy is based on the cold, ineffable logic of mathematical probability.
In essence, given your own total relative to the dealers up card, every possible scenario offers up one play that is more profitable over the long run than any alternative. Most students struggle to memorize the soft hands which include an Ace, or the paired hands which can be split, but I always had trouble with the basic hard totals.
Eventually, though, I found a way to break the hard hand components of basic strategy down into eight easily remembered tricks. They worked wonders for my game, so Im happy to share them with readers hoping to brush up on their blackjack skills.
*These basic strategy tips apply to standard Las Vegas blackjack tables where the following house rules are in place:
6 to 5 payouts on blackjack; dealer must hit on soft 17; 8-deck shoe; doubling down after splitting is allowed; re-splitting aces is allowed; surrendering is not allowed
Beginning with the bottom of the blackjack hand totem pole, lets look at the lowliest* of hard starting totals 5, 6, 7, and 8.
*You can start with a 2 (A-A), 3 (A-3), or 4 (2-2 & A-3), but these arent hard hands
When you see a couple of baby cards in the hole, you dont have to do a thing but tap the table for a hit. These low hard totals basically get a free shot at improving, because no card can come which will cause them to go bust.
In most cases, youre looking for an Ace to arrive in these spots. When it does, your hard starting hand suddenly evolves into a soft total which provides more playability and even opportunities to double down against the right dealer up card.
Face cards and 10s are also a welcome sight here, turning 7 into 17 and 8 into 18.
But no matter what you draw after hitting a hard low hand, youll simply proceed by using basic strategy based on your new total.
On the other end of the hand strength spectrum, hard totals of 17 and higher are automatic stands according to the basic strategy chart.
At this point, youve already been graced by the gambling gods with a winnable starting hand so why tempt fate and try to improve further by risking an unnecessary hit? Even in the most marginal of these spots, such as hard 17 against the dealers 10, hitting just isnt worth it when you know only 2s, 3s, and 4s can save you.
At that rate, with only 12 potential improvements in each 52-card deck, youll go bust more than 75 percent of the time.
When youve been handed a gift horse in the form of a high-hard starting total, its never a good idea to look it in the mouth. Take what the deck gave you and hope the odds hold up by delivering the dealer a loss.
One of the prettiest sights in the game, aside from a natural blackjack, is a hard 11 to start the hand.
With any of the hard 11 combos 2-9, 3-8, 4-7, 5-6 in the hole, youve earned a lucrative opportunity to punish the dealer by doubling down. It doesnt matter what the dealer is showing either, even a 10 or Ace up still makes doubling on hard 11 the best play.
The reasoning here is quite simple when you remember just how many 10-value cards are in each 52-deck crammed in the shoe. Between the 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings, the ratio of 10-value cards in a deck stands at 16/52. In other words, youll have slightly more than a 30 percent chance of drawing a 10 to complete an unbeatable 21.
And thanks to the extra bet you must pay for the privilege of doubling down, that 30 percent probability is worth twice the potential profit.
Some inexperienced players decline to double on hard 11 against a dealers 10, mistakenly believing that the removal of a precious 10 tilts the odds against them. This is erroneous, however, so please feel free to double whenever a hard 11 hits the felt.
If you cant start with a hard 11, a hard 10 is the next best thing
With these combos 2-8, 3-7, 4-6, and 5-5* you enjoy a prime double down spot against almost all dealer-up cards.
*5-5 is technically a paired hand, but basic strategy advises playing it exactly the same as any other hard 10
Unless the dealer is showing a 10 or Ace, doubling on a hard 10 is always the right move to make.
You dont want to double on a hard 10 against a 10 because, if you do manage to hit another 10 for 20, youre still looking at a push should the dealer flip over a 10 for themselves. And against a dealer Ace, you know that one of the four Aces (in every 52-card deck) you need to make 21 has already been claimed.
Other than those two bugaboos though, doubling on hard 10 is a great way to squeeze an additional bet into your chip stack.
The only other hard total which can be doubled down on prudently is the 9 (2-7, 3-6, 4-5).
With that said, you should only double on hard 9 when the dealer has a 3, 4, 5, or 6 up. Ive found this rule is easier to remember when you think about the math needed to add up to 9. Basically, 3 + 6 = 9, and so does 4 + 5 so these are the only four dealer cards that call for a double on hard 9.
This limit is in place for a few reasons, but first and foremost, you dont want to risk an extra bet doubling against strong dealer cards of 7 or higher. Assuming they turn over a 10 on those cards, theyll simply hit and mint a winner when you fail to hit a high card.
Conversely, with a hard 9 against high cards, you can safely take a hit in hopes of improving to 19 or 20, but youre not doomed if you dont. When a small card arrives after a hit here, you can simply hit again (or follow basic strategy for that specific total), which gives you more room to try and chase down the dealers high total.
Diving into the nitty-gritty of basic strategy, hard totals of 13, 14, 15, and 16 follow a very straightforward rule to decide between standing and hitting.
Essentially, a 6 as the dealers up card provides the threshold between those two decisions. When facing a 6 or lower, standing on hard 13-16 is the proper play because it allows the dealer to go bust hitting their own weak total. Assuming they flip over a 10-value card on their 2-6, the dealer will be highly likely to go bust on their next mandatory hit.
Flipping the script, you should hit on hard 13-16 when the dealer has a 7 or higher up.
In this situation, either at a casino table or on a live dealer online game, when the dealer turns over a 10, theyll stand and automatically beat you if you stood on 13-16. Thus, taking a chance and trying to spike a small or medium card to improve your low starting total is the least bad option.
Last but not least, the most vexing of blackjack hands is a hard 12 for several reasons.
If you choose to hit, youll have a high likelihood of going bust on any 10-value card. Stand, however, and youre bringing a knife to a gunfight with a very low 12 total.
When you hold a hard 12, standing is only the right play against the dealers 4, 5, or 6. Once again, these middling-up cards make 14, 15, and 16 distinct possibilities for the dealer, and those are quick tickets to bust town when theyre forced to hit.
With hard 12 against any other dealer card, hitting and hoping for the best is the best way to dig out of the hole the deck has dug for you.
If youre attempting to learn blackjacks basic strategy, the sight of those color-coded charts divided into hard, soft, and paired hands can be daunting, to say the least. It was for me anyway, what with 340 distinct player total vs. dealer-up card scenarios in play.
For that reason, Ive always taught ambitious blackjack students to use the age-old divide and conquer approach. First, break down the chart into hard, soft, and paired hands. Next, break each of those components down into logical rules as shown above. Before you know it, youll be instantly recalling the correct play the moment your cards hit the baize.
