Gov. Mike DeWine and other Ohio Republicans flush with campaign cash headed into general election – cleveland.com
Posted: June 11, 2022 at 1:51 am
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Republican Gov. Mike DeWine received $2 million in campaign donations over the past three months, giving him $7 million to use in his re-election bid this November.
DeWine has a sizable campaign war chest despite spending $3.1 million as he fought through the May primary election, defeating three Republican challengers. The $2 million he raised, while the most by far of any statewide candidate, still was roughly $1 million lower than what he raised during the equivalent period in 2018, when he first ran for governor.
Meanwhile, DeWines Democratic opponent, former Dayton mayor Nan Whaley, reported raising $1 million. She spent $528,000 in a her own primary election, which she easily won against former Cincinnati mayor John Cranley. That left her with $728,000 in her campaign account. But that number is partially offset by $341,800 she owes to campaign vendors.
DeWine and Whaley reported the totals on Friday, ahead of the campaign-finance deadline for candidates for state office in this years elections. All figures refer to campaign financial activity since mid-April. State legislative candidates didnt report anything, since their primary election got postponed until August over redistricting delays.
Donors who gave DeWine the maximum $13,704 include Realtors PAC, which represents real-estate agents, former Republican congressman Pat Tiberi, who has money left over in his congressional campaign account but now runs a major business trade association and Ohio Contractors PAC.
Whaleys big donors included U.S. Savings Bank CEO Louis Beck, who gave $13,900, America Works State & Local PAC, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Browns leadership PAC, which gave $13,704 and Emilys List, which supports abortion rights and gave Whaley $13,704.
Including DeWine, Republican candidates for statewide office generally will have a huge cash advantage heading into the general election in November. For example, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, a Republican, reported having $1.9 million in his campaign bank account after raising $321,500. His Democratic opponent, Chelsea Clark, a city councilwoman from suburban Cincinnati, reported raising just $26,100 with a cash balance of $34,800.
And in the race for state attorney general, Republican incumbent Dave Yost reported raising $152,000 but has $2.3 million in the bank, compared to his Democratic opponent, Parma State Rep. Jeff Crossman, who raised $54,200 and has $129,7000 in cash.
Republicans also have financial advantages in races for three seats up for grabs on the Ohio Supreme Court, including the race to replace retiring Republican Chief Justice Maureen OConnor, although the GOP edge there is not nearly as stark.
In the race for chief justice, Republican Justice Sharon Kennedy reported raising $186,6000 and has $812,200 in cash on hand, compared to Democratic Justice Jennifer Brunner, who raised $147,000 and has $400,200.
Republican Justice Pat DeWine, whos running for re-election, reported raising $174,400 and has $600,000 in cash. Meanwhile, his Democratic challenger, Cincinnati state appellate Judge Marilyn Zayas, raised $102,300 and has $264,900 in cash.
And another Republican running for re-election, Justice Pat Fischer reported raising $106,000 with $353,400 in cash, compared to his Democratic challenger, state appellate Judge Terri Jamison, who raised $126,000 and has $208,800 in cash.
Millions of dollars in outside money also is expected to eventually be spent in the Supreme Court races, so candidate fundraising may not offer a total picture.
Major donors to the Republican justices include the Ohio State Medical Association, a trade association for doctors which gave $7,500 each to Kennedy, DeWine and Fischer, and the Westfield Employee Federal PAC, which is associated with Farmers Insurance and gave $6,000 each to all three Republican Supreme Court candidates.
Major donors to the Democratic judicial candidates, meanwhile, included the United Food and Commercial Workers International, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, which gave Jamison, Zayas and Justice Jennifer Brunner $7,500 each. Matriots PAC, a Columbus organization that backs women candidates who support abortion rights, gave Brunner, Jamison and Zayas each $6,500.
Some of the reports posted Friday come from candidates who were vanquished in the May primary.
That includes Jim Renacci, the former Wadsworth congressman who finished second in the Republican primary for governor, losing to DeWine by 20 percentage points.
Renacci reported spending almost $4 million -- with his largest expenses including advertisement and marketing -- leaving him with just $11,600 left over following the election. Renacci loaned his campaign $4.5 million, showing he followed through on his pledge to actually spend his personal wealth on his campaign after he largely avoided doing so when he ran and lost for U.S. Senate in 2018.
Joe Blystone, a Central Ohio farmer who finished third in the governors race after running an unconventional, far-right campaign, reported still having $175,700 in the bank after spending $51,500. His biggest expenses included $13,000 on legal services -- he faces a thicket of alleged campaign-finance violations -- and $10,000 he paid to rent an RV owned by his company, Blystone Farms, LLC.
Cranley, the former Cincinnati mayor whom Whaley defeated in the May primary, reported having $26,000 left over in his campaign fund after he spent about $452,000 on his race.

What a NY Republican abandoning his reelection says about gun reform – The Hill
Posted: at 1:51 am
Political observers reaction to Rep. Chris Jacobs (R-N.Y.) abruptly abandoning his reelection bid over backlash to his support for gun control measures could be summarized in one word: Wow.
As the dust settles on Jacobss abrupt bowing out, questions are circulating about what his being pushed out of Congress could mean for gun control efforts and negotiations in the wake of recent massacres and whether hardening in the Republican Party around the issue leaves any room for compromise.
Jacobs, who represents a district that surrounds Buffalo, N.Y., where a self-proclaimed white supremacist gunned down 10 Black people, said that shooting as well as the massacre that killed 19 elementary school children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas, made him want to be transparent with his position.
If an assault weapons ban bill came to the floor that would ban something like an AR-15, I would vote for it, Jacobs said in a May 27 press conference. He also mentioned limiting access to body armor and raising the legal age for buying high-capacity semi-automatic weapons to 21.
Backlash was swift.
Donald Trump Jr. dressed Jacobs down on Twitter, accusing him of chasing glowing headlines from the mainstream media. Conservatives started looking for a primary challenger. Gun rights activists circulated petitions asking Jacobs to reverse his position. Every GOP elected official that had endorsed him withdrew their support, Jacobs said, and someone posted his cellphone number online.
A week later, Jacobs announced that he would not seek reelection to New Yorks newly drawn 23rd Congressional District, which covers some of the same territory as his current 27th District but includes much new terrain. He did not want to divide the GOP, he said, and make the election entirely about the gun issue.
Now advocates on both sides are seeking to parse what his decision means for the gun control debate and attempts at reforms.
The best chance at any successful legislation in Congress rests in the Senate, where Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) hopes to lead a bipartisan group of senators to compromise on small steps to address gun violence. Areas of potential agreement concern reforms to background checks and promoting red flag laws to keep those deemed a danger to themselves or others from possessing firearms.
But Jacobs, who assumed office in mid-2020 after winning a special election, indicated the fallout around his own position could be a sign that any Republican who steps out of line could face the same political fate. He expected pushback, he said, but not to that extent.
We have a problem in our country, in terms of both our major parties. If you stray from a party position, you are annihilated, Jacobs said. For the Republicans, it became pretty apparent to me over the last week that that issue is gun control any gun control.
Advocates for gun control and safety measures, though, hope that Jacobs is a unique case and not indicative of what happens to any Republican who entertains gun reform.
It seems like Congressman Jacobs sort of mishandled this politically in various ways. But obviously, his heart was in the right place, said Peter Ambler, executive director of the gun reform group Giffords.
GOP officials appeared to be caught off-guard by Jacobss announcement. New York State Republican Committee Chairman Nick Langworthy told local news station WIVB 4 that Jacobs did not talk about his position with political allies before making the announcement. Conservative Party of New York State Chairman Gerard Kassar said he was perplexed at Jacobss announcement.
Theres ample evidence to show that, you know, to show that Republicans can and have successfully supported safer gun laws in Congress and elsewhere, Ambler said.
An assault weapons ban is not on the table in the bipartisan Senate negotiations, other gun control activists note. They point to strong bipartisan support among Americans for requiring background checks on all gun sales.
The vast majority of Americans, including a majority of Republicans, believe that the time is now for action to prevent further gun violence, said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. Its deeply disappointing that the extremists in his party have pushed Congressman Jacobs out, but this doesnt change the fact that we have a real opportunity to make real changes that can save lives. Im encouraged by reports of progress on red flags, background checks, secure storage and more mental health support because inaction cannot be an option.
Gun rights groups, though, see Jacobss political demise as predictable and justified.
Federal bans on semi-automatic rifles are wildly unpopular with law-abiding gun owners a group of Americans who regularly vote and are deeply involved in the political process. When Rep. Jacobs came out in support of an assault weapons ban, he signed onto the end of his political career in Congress, said Chris Stone, director of communications with the National Association for Gun Rights, a group that boasts a no-compromise stance.
The group circulated a petition to its members asking Jacobs to reverse his stance.
Gun rights groups have also pledged to run aggressive campaigns against some of the compromise positions being considered in Congress. Red flag laws like those on the table in Senate negotiations, they argue, violate due process rights.
Well expose any and all Republicans (and Democrats) who vote in favor of compromise gun control deals, including Red Flag and universal background checks which funnel gun owners into the NICS [background check] database, Stone said.
GOP leadership on the House side has also expressed opposition to red flag laws.
Under the guise of [a] red flag, they take away due process where they literally can come into your house and take away your gun without you even knowing that there was some kind of proceeding where somebody said, Oh, I think that guy might be a threat, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) said on Fox News Sunday. So, now somebody can go and take away your constitutional right. I dont think people would agree with that. Thats not how we deal with rights in America.

Audio: Republican confronted Lauren Boebert for "telling the attackers where we’re at" on Jan. 6 – Salon
Posted: at 1:51 am
Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., was confronted by one of her Republican colleagues for live-tweeting the locations of various House lawmakers as the Capitol riot unfolded, according to audio tapes obtained by CNN.
The tape was part of a trove of audio clips released by New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns as part of research compiled for their forthcoming book "This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America's Future."
The exchange reportedly played out during an internal conversation on January 11 between Boebert and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., who asked the freshman firebrand point blank, "Is it true that you were live-tweeting from the floor our location the people on the outside as we were being attacked, Lauren?"
"Umm, yes," Boebert responded. "Those tweets did go out and that was something that was live and public information. It was broadcast live."
"So don't ask us about security if you're telling the attackers where we're at," Beutler shot back.
"So, that was something being broadcast live from C-SPAN, and once we were on move, there was absolutely nothing else that was broadcast," Boebert insisted.

RELATED: Why did Lauren Boebert lead a late-night Capitol tour three weeks before Jan. 6?
According to Rolling Stone, Boebert was in contact with several organizers of the "Stop the Steal" protests days prior to the insurrection. Boebert also led a late-night Capitol tour three weeks ahead of the event in apparent violation of Capitol procedures, as Salon reported last August.
Boebert's tiff with Beutler wasn't the only exchange archived by Martin and Burns from January 11. That day, GOP lawmakers also heard from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who sang a startlingly different tune from recent months about the need for a federal inquiry into the insurrection.
"We cannot just sweep this under the rug. We need to know why it happened, who did it and people need to be held accountable for it," he said. "And I'm committed to make sure that happens."
Since then, the top Republican repeatedly attempted to discredit the January 6 committee and torpedoed plans to ensure that its composition was bipartisan.

Meanwhile, Martin and Burns obtained audio footage of Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., warning lawmakers of the need to shore up security ahead of January 6.
"I also ask leadership to come up with a safety plan for members, I'm actually very concerned about this, because we have who knows how many hundreds of thousands of people coming here," Lesko said the day before the attack, according to CNN. "We have Antifa. We also have, quite honestly Trump supporters, who actually believe that we are going to overturn the election. And when that doesn't happen most likely, will not happen they are going to go nuts."
Lesko reportedly attended a White House meeting with several pro-Trump lawmakers months earlier to strategize how the 2020 election could be overturned in Donald Trump's favor.

Polygamy, underage wives, and women treated as chattel: Inside Warren Jeffss Fundamentalist Mormon sect – The Independent
Posted: at 1:49 am
The man known as the prophet was arrested in a red Cadillac outside of Las Vegas. Warren Jeffs, the head of a polygamist sect, had been living the high life, a private investigator would later recall. He had been to Disney World. He had celebrated Mardi Gras in New Orleans. He had gone to strip clubs. He had worn gentile clothing instead of the clothes he expected his followers to wear. He had kept the company of his favorite wives.
At the time, Warren Jeffs was a high-profile fugitive, recently bumped to the FBIs Ten Most Wanted list. He had been charged in Arizona with two counts of sexual conduct with a minor, one count of conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. In Utah, he faced a charge of rape as an accomplice.
On 28 August 2006, a routine traffic stop led to Warren Jeffss arrest. The license plates on his vehicle were obscured. He and other passengers were pulled over. Warrens brother Isaac Jeffs was driving; Warrens favorite wife was in the front seat. Warren himself was in the back seat, eating a salad.
The arrest, which led to the first of Warren Jeffss convictions, is one of many gripping moments recounted in Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, a new Netflix documentary dedicated to Jeffs and the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The FLDS emerged when the Mormon church discontinued polygamy and excommunicated those who kept practicing it. It was incorporated under that name in 1991, though its origins can be traced back to the early 20th century. The group was originally located in Arizona, close to the Utah border, and later expanded into Utah and Texas, with communities in other regions.
Elements of the FLDS story are already familiar to the public. Images of women in long-sleeved, ankle-length pastel prairie dresses, their hair pulled back back in the same braided hairstyle, will ring a bell. (Some of the women themselves spoke to the media after a high-profile police raid of an FLDS ranch in Texas in 2008.) Warren Jeffss photo circulated when he became wanted by law enforcement, and when he was twice convicted on criminal charges. Former members who left the sect have provided firsthand accounts of life in the group, of the type of mind control deployed by Jeffs, and of the events that led to their departure.
Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey adds to these existing testimonies by painting a portrait of the FLDS as a structure of coercive control and systemized abuse, in which Warren Jeffs and his father before him made themselves into so-called prophets and weaved religious doctrine in service of their own domination.
Warren Jeffss name has become synonymous with the FLDS, but the movement had existed for decades, partly under different names, by the time he became its leader. Leroy S Johnson was the head of the Council of Friends (now viewed as an early iteration of what became the FLDS) from the Fifties to his death in 1986. Warren Jeffss father Rulon Jeffs took over that same year. He was known among members of the FLDS as the prophet, an undisputed ruler within the group.
A mans status depends on how many wives he has
Rulon Jeffs lived his years as the FLDS prophet much like Warren Jeffs later would, according to accounts given by former members of the sect. Rebecca Wall, a participant in Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey who was raised in the FLDS, recounts being married to Rulon Jeffs, then 85, when she was 19. Her account is a scathing illustration of the power dynamics in which women and girls, evidently, were treated in the FLDS like something resembling currency, pawns in the sects political games.
A mans status depends on how many wives he has, Wall says in episode one. My dad he had two wives, and he couldnt figure out why other men were getting more wives and he was not. So my dad always felt like he was jilted. He was always kind of frustrated. But he also had this host of daughters that could be given to other men. And its kind of like, Ill give you some if you give me some. Even though its never spoken that way, I think thats the general understanding.
People in the FLDS did not choose who they married. The way Wall recounts it, girls were given over to the prophet once it was deemed time for them to wed, and the prophet decided on marriages himself.
When I turned 19, my father brought me to Rulon Jeffs, she continues. By then, Wall says, it was known that Rulon Jeffs had a specific handshake he used with girls who would later become his wife. He shook her hand and squeezed it three times. That meant I was supposed to marry him, she adds. My dad was so excited. For any man in the FLDS, to have their daughter marry into the prophets family, was a massive honor. And I think my dad felt like finally he was getting the respect that he was entitled to and that he deserved. But I was just like, Ew. I got married, and then my father got his third wife.
In a book disputing his daughters account of the family's time in the FLDS, published in 2015, Lloyd Wall, Rebecca Walls father, stated that there was no pressure or collusion to force his daughter into marriage with Rulon Jeffs. Rebecca does have a story to tell as her marriage to Rulon Jeffs turned out to be a nightmare, he added in the book. But the marriage and the horrible experiences with Rulon Jeffs cannot be blamed upon any family member.
Rulon Jeffs died in 2002. His death was a time of confusion, recounted candidly in the documentary: Members of the FLDS had been taught that the prophet was immortal literally. I truly believed that any minute, he was going to sit up and be renewed, Elissa Wall, who grew up in the FLDS and says she was forced to marry her cousin aged 14, recounts. They closed the casket and there was this overwhelming fear inside of me. If they put him in the ground, how is he going to get out?

It could have been a damning moment for the FLDS, proof that a key part of the doctrine (that the prophet could not die) was false. But Warren Jeffs succeeded to his father as prophet, and, per Elissa Wall, began speaking as though he was his father renewed. He married his fathers wives. His ways didnt sit well with some members. I went to my husband, and I said, Somethings wrong, Charlene Jeffs, who was married to Warren Jeffss brother Lyle Jeffs, recounts. And he said, Nothing our prophet does is wrong.
Warren Jeffs enforced stricter rules than his father. Members were to abstain from any form of fun. Lloyd Wall says a big change for him was having to turn in all his guns. But a lot of rules targeted women specifically: under Rulon Jeffs, they had to be covered; under Warren Jeffs, they were forbidden to wear denim, prints, or the color red. They were then expected to wear long underwear covering their entire bodies to their wrists and feet. Their hair had to be done and braided. The women listened, Charlene Jeffs says, because they thought this was their path to salvation.
Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey is at its most powerful when it ventures outside the strict limits of the FLDS to look at the wider forces that allowed the group to keep going for decades, even as it existed in plain sight, with the knowledge of at least some of the local authorities. In a damning sequence, journalist Mike Watkiss, who investigated the FLDS for years, is seen, camera on his shoulder, telling a police officer in Short Creek (now known as the towns of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah): Utah Constitution says that polygamy is illegal, and I guess theres laws on the books in Arizona that say the same thing. Why dont people get arrested here?
You know, Im the police officer begins, then replies: I mean, were in we believe in plural marriage. (That officer, Mica Barlow, was later reported to have written in a letter of support for Warren Jeffs while Jeffs while a fugitive: I want to be an extension of you in the police department or whatever you would have me be. In 2006, he was one of two men held in contempt of court for refusing to testify about Warren Jeffs in front of a grand jury.)
People are entitled to believe what they want, but the law currently in the United States is that polygamy is not a protected constitutional right, Roger Hoole, an attorney in Utah featured in the documentary, says. Yet, despite being illegal, it is almost never prosecuted.
Its hard to prove, and law enforcement and politicians are not very interested in disrupting families, he adds. I think most people in Utah, the mainstream Mormons people like me see polygamy as an embarrassment. But polygamy is really not the problem anyway. Its the secondary crimes that occur in a closed religious society controlled by men. Thats when all sorts of mischief can take place, and thats what happened with the FLDS.

Most of the men in the FLDS regarded women as chattel, Wallace Jeffs, one of Rulon Jeffss sons, says at one point. Members of the FLDS were taught that men needed to have at least three wives in order to reach the highest degree of the celestial kingdom. Then, a man would basically become a god.
And what happens to the women? Do they become gods? Wallace Jeffs is asked during his interview. He laughs, then says: That is kind of a gray area. We were never taught what a woman becomes on the other side, other than a wife.
Ruby Jessop, one of the participants in the documentary, says Warren Jeffs ordered her to be married to her second cousin when she was 14. There had historically been underage marriages in the FLDS, Hoole says, but they took off on steroids under Warren Jeffs. The pattern, he adds, seemed to be that with a girl that was a little bit independent, the idea was to get her married young and pregnant, and she would be locked in.
In 2011, Warren Jeffs was convicted in Texas of sexually assaulting two girls. He was sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl and 20 years for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. This was four years after Jeffss 2007 conviction on two charges of being an accomplice to rape in Utah, for which he was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison. The Utah Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 2010. By then, the Texas charges were already pending.
During the sentencing phase of the Texas trial, evidence reflected that Jeffs was involved in conducting the marriages of 67 underage girls to FLDS men, says Angela Goodwin, a former US Attorney Special Prosecutor. Jeffs himself, she adds, had himself 78 wives 24 of those wives were underage.
Warren Jeffs is believed to still be running the FLDS and exercising influence on members from prison. Former members who have left the FLDS describe being estranged from their relatives still within the group in Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey. Three of us are out, Lola Barlow, who was in the group as a child, says. The rest of everybodys still in. I could just drive to their house and talk to them. But they wont talk to me.

A primer on the abusive FLDS church, from its self-proclaimed prophet to forced underage polygamy – Salon
Posted: at 1:49 am
In recent months, Netflix has released a collection of harrowing true-crime content, from the "Conversations with a Killer" series surrounding the John Wayne Gacy tapes to the "Our Father" documentary on disgraced fertility doc Donald Cline.
The streaming giant's latest installation is the docuseries "Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey," which revisits the unthinkable horrors of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), a radical denomination of Mormonism.
Regarded as the "one true prophet," Warren spent years brainwashing the close-knit community into spiritual submission, promoting child sexual assault, bigamy and unlawful marriage.
Over the course of four episodes, the series features several survivor stories from former members of the polygamous and abusive sect led by Warren Jeffs. Regarded as the "one true prophet," Warren spent years brainwashing the close-knit community into spiritual submission, promoting child sexual assault, bigamy and unlawful marriage all in the name of religion.

The documentary notes that Warren himself had 78 total wives, 24 of whom were underage. In 2011, he was convicted of two felony counts of child sexual assault, for which he is serving life in prison and an additional 20 years. Watch a trailer for it below, via YouTube:
Today, the FLDS is regarded as both a designated hate group and "a white supremacist, homophobic, antigovernment, totalitarian cult" by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Here's a closer look at the church's history, from its inception in 1890 to its practices and preachings.
The church's founding
The FLDS was established in 1890 after a group of nonconforming adherents broke away from the Mormon church in order to continue practicing polygamy. Since polygamy was deemed illegal in the state of Utah (and nationwide), the group decided to settle in the towns of Hildale and Colorado City located on the Utah-Arizona border. The remote locations allowed them to follow their customs and expand their following with little to no backlash from state law enforcement agencies in either jurisdiction.
During the 20th century, the FLDS endured several crackdowns from the local government that inadvertently made the denomination stronger rather than weaker. On July 26, 1953, all the FLDS members residing in Short Creek, Arizona including 36 men, 86 women, and 263 children were arrested during a pre-dawn raid ordered by the state's governor, John Howard Pyle. The raid's outcome, however, didn't go as planned as it garnered negative media coverage and botched the governor's own political career. Instead, it bolstered public support and sympathy for the growing sect of polygamists.
Rulon T. Jeffs' reign
The first leader of the FLDS was John Y. Barlow, followed by Joseph White Musser and then Charles Zitting, following a brief scuffle within the community. Zitting was later succeeded by Leroy S. Johnson, who led the sect until his death in 1986. That same year, Rulon T. Jeffs took over as prophet. Prior to his FLDS leadership role, Rulon served as a High Priest Apostle in Salt Lake City after moving back to town in the spring of 1945.
Among his followers, Rulon was commonly known as "Uncle Rulon" and he "oftentimes made decisions based on visions he claimed he received from a higher power," per Distractify.
In "Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey," one of Rulon's many wives, Alicia Rohbock, recounted the prophet's dining room wall, which organized each picture of Rulon's partners in the order he married them. At the time of his death in September 2002, it was reported that Rulon had more than 75 wives and fathered approximately 60 children. Many of Rulon's wives were also believed to have been underage at the time of their marriage Rohbock, in particular, was just 20 years of age when she married Rulon, who was 86.

Warren Jeffs takes over
Rulon's son, Warren quickly assumed his position as prophet shortly after his father's death. What was once Rulon's now belonged to Warren, including Rulon's 70+ wives. Warren married all but two of his father's partners and additionally, took on his father's previous responsibility of assigning wives to their designated husbands.
Warren stripped women and girls of their autonomy, ordering them to don a new kind of prairie dress that covered them from head to toe and style their hair in a specific fashion.
Many former members of the FLDS recalled that Warren's leadership marked a dark period within the church's longstanding history. Under his reign, rules for the sect's members became stricter with Warren dictating what they wore, who they married and what they ate. Warren also forced members to turn over their personal property to the church's leadership, required that children be homeschooled and even prohibited members from voting by telling them that he was the President of the United States . . .
Warren also banned the use of items that were the color red (even though he owned a red Cadillac Escalade) banned different kinds of entertainment like "dogs, toys, television, newspapers, the Internet, birthday and Christmas celebrations, festivals, parades, camping and fishing" and encouraged members to tone down their emotions.
A handful of his rules served to control the girls and women in the group. Warren facilitated numerous underage and incestuous marriages, forcing girls as young as 14 years old to tie the knot with their distant relatives. The so-called prophet also adhered to his own rules and had 78 wives, 24 of whom were underage.
Additionally, Warren stripped women and girls of their autonomy, ordering them to don a new kind of prairie dress that covered them from head to toe and style their hair in a specific fashion.
Warren's arrest
Warren became a sought-out felon in 2005, when he was first indicted in Arizona on felony charges of arranging a marriage between a 16-year-old girl and a 28-year-old man, who was already married. The following year he was arrested as an accomplice to rape for performing another unlawful marriage involving a 14-year-old girl.
In 2007, Warren was found guilty of two counts of rape and in 2008, he along with other FLDS members were indicted on charges of bigamy and sexual assault.
Three years later, on August 4, 2011, Warren was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14 and sexual assault of a child under the age of 17. He is currently serving a life sentence for the former and an additional 20 years for the latter.
"Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey" is currently streaming on Netflix.

Dear Abby Jeanne Phillips
DEAR ABBY: My husband and I are in our 40s. Last year, we decided to make a very big change in our lives. We decided to seek out a second wife (sister wife) for my husband. I was completely on board with it at first. He reached out to a woman he knew years ago and asked if she would consider joining our family. However, I started getting this feeling that she wasnt the right woman to bring into our family. She ignored many of my in-depth questions about why she wanted to live this type of life.
I have expressed to my husband that I no longer want her in my life and it has reached the point that I no longer want to live a plural lifestyle. I felt bad that Im the one who changed my mind, so I agreed to allow them to continue a relationship as long as they keep me out of it, and he keeps her out of my home and my life.
I dont understand how he can continue living this way, living two separate lives and be OK with it. Weve been together more than 20 years and I dont want to leave, but how can I continue loving a man with my whole heart and soul when he only loves me with part of his? SISTER WIFE
DEAR WIFE: Relationships such as you describe can work out when all three of the parties involved feel they are equally valued. Some women tolerate their husband having someone on the side because they derive some benefit beyond the emotional connection one associates with marriage. That said, in the final analysis, the only person who can answer the question youre asking me is you.
DEAR ABBY: I am an 11-year-old girl. My 16-year-old sister has severe depression and an eating disorder. She has been to the hospital twice because of it, and now she has to go to the hospital every day to get her to eat more. Even though people are helping her, I dont think shes getting better. It makes me feel worried and sad.
My mom has me seeing a therapist, and she helps me to feel better, but its still hard knowing my sister is having such a hard time. I have never dealt with anything this hard in my life. I wish I could just not have to always think about how sad I am. I really want everything to be normal. Can you tell me ways to not get so upset about everything thats going on? HAVING A HARD TIME IN IOWA
DEAR HAVING A HARD TIME: Im glad you are seeing a therapist you can talk to about your sadness and worry. Being able to discuss them with someone you trust and who isnt emotionally involved can be a blessing.
I do have a suggestion that might help you in addition to your therapy. Participate in sports activities and hobbies that keep your mind occupied. If you keep yourself busy, you will have less time to dwell on your sadness and worry. And please, write me again in a couple of months and let me know how you are doing, because Im hopeful you will be feeling better than you do right now.

Congress Ignores Pressing National Business While It Obsesses on Jan. 6 – The Epoch Times
Posted: at 1:48 am
Commentary
As the House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the United States Capitol starts public hearings, we must ask what motivates those on the committee.
Is the sole concern the ideals of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States? Or is it to get media to attack and undermine political opponents?
It is indeed possible that infractions of law can be investigated without a carnival platform designed to mobilize media and national attention.
The public material of the committee already reeks of motivations other than seeking truth.
The committee has already announced on its website that the Jan. 6 incident was one of the darkest days of our democracy.
Really? Against a civil war where some three-quarters of a million Americans were killed, fighting over what American freedom is about, one incident of a few hours, where law enforcement finally prevailed, was one of our darkest days?
There are just 24 hours in any day, so time taken on one matter means attention not given to other matters.
If these members of Congress really cared about our principles of freedom and democracy, they wouldnt be ignoring every day other pressing matters in which the freedom of American citizens is blatantly violated.
Take, for example, that as the Jan. 6 investigation monopolizes media attention, on June 3 the Trustees of Medicare and Social Security issued their annual report.
Both systems are bankrupt and in dismal shape financially.
The cash shortfall of Medicare in 2021 was $409 billion. Projection is that Social Security will be out of adequate cash flow to meet obligations to retirees by 2035just 13 years from now.
The Trustees estimate that there are only adequate funds in Social Security to meet 80 percent of benefits in 2035. The payroll tax, now 12.4 percent, would have to be raised 26 percent in order to generate sufficient funds to meet those obligations.
In other words, today every working American age 55 and below who plans to collect Social Security benefits at age 67 is paying a payroll tax into a system that cannot provide the benefits promised.
Can you imagine a private insurance company sending a letter to policy holders saying that, in 13 years, they will only be able to meet 80 percent of the payments promised to policy holders?
The lawsuits would be flying.
Lets forget about the fiscal situation of the system for a minute and whether it is even worth saving this program. How about the issue of freedom that our members of Congress want us to believe they care about so much?
Take a young citizen, age 21, fresh with his or her new degree, entering the work force for the first time. Immediately, 12.4 percent of their paycheck is deducted into a system they involuntarily enter, in which there are inadequate funds to meet promised benefits.
Shouldnt this new young worker be able to say, No, thank you, I dont want to participate?
Even if the system were not broken, and benefits could be met, in our free country, shouldnt everyone be free to manage their own retirement?
According to the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, the average return of Social Security over the last 40 years was 1 percent. Over the same period, average return on stocks was 6 percent.
Back to this new young worker, by the calculations of the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, this single worker, if they earned the median national income and were able to invest 10 percent of their income into a diversified stock and bond portfolio over 40 years, instead of paying the payroll tax, could have annual income at retirement of $55,143 against $19,646 from Social Security.
So, hey, members of the Select Committee. Enough of pretending that you care about American freedom. How about wrapping up the carnival and getting down to the real challenges every American faces today?

MyBookie Blackjack Review – Why You Should Play There – Gambling Sites
Posted: at 1:48 am
MyBookie is an online casino and sportsbook featuring hundreds of slot machines, table games, blackjack, and offers odds on just about any sport you can name (Sorry buzkash fans, maybe next year!).
While we have a MyBookie review for its overall performance, this review highlights its treatment of a game that many would consider the acid test of any casino: Blackjack.
To help you decide if MyBookie deserves to be your go-to online casino for all things blackjack-y (sorry, the batteries are dead on my thesaurus), Ill be looking at everything the gambler wants to know about it.
Well take an in-depth look at the various blackjack offering at MyBookie and the play, the betting options, the bonusespretty much everything youd expect from a MyBookie blackjack review.
Ill be rating each of the features and attributes of MyBookies blackjack offering with a score between one and five, with five being best and one being run away.
Blackjack Game Variety (Score: 5)
Blackjack is well-known for offering the house one of the thinnest edges of all banked games: less than half of 1% (dont worry, thats based on perfect play, which is not what most people do at the blackjack tablesor so Ive heard).
MyBookie offers a wide range of regular blackjack games and live dealer blackjack. The standard blackjack games are licensed by well-known gaming software developers like Arrows Edge and BetSoft, both well-known online game developers. The live dealer games are provided by Visionary iGaming.
Among the online versions are a few bubblegum-flavored blackjack gamesthe sort of gimmick games that attract attention and offer some additional excitement. They also give the house a better advantage. Some of these are jackpot blackjack, ultimate blackjack, and perfect pair blackjack.
But if youre looking to grind blackjack until its fine dust, plenty of standard single and multi-deck games are among the offerings.
Regardless of your preferences, MyBookie has them all, most of which offer free-play versions if you want to familiarize yourself with the rules and the gameplay without risking your bankroll.
Heres a run-down of the differences between their various versions of blackjack.
American Blackjack
If youre a gringo, this is the version of blackjack you are most familiar with and maybe the only one you knew existed.
The player is dealt two cards face up, while the dealer (representing the house) is dealt one card up and one card down.
If the dealers up card is an ace, the game pauses as each player is offered the opportunity to buy insurance that the dealer does not have 21 (an ace, worth 11) and a face card (ten through king, worth 10).
If the dealers hole card does, in fact, give him a blackjack, the hand is over. Nobody wins, although players who also have blackjacks are given their initial wagers back (a push).
If youve played this version of blackjack before, youll have no problem using the basic blackjack strategy to play this game on MyBookie successfully.
European Blackjack
So similar at first glance that it is easily confused with American blackjack, European blackjack does not reveal the dealers hole card until all other play is finished.
MyBookie offers a multi-hand, a 6-deck variant that provides the usual 3:2 blackjack payout, insurance, and dealer stands on 17 and hits anything less.
The minimum bet here is $1, with a maximum bet of $100. Late surrender is not permitted.
Incidentally, the deck is shuffled after every hand.
Multihand Blackjack (Both American and European Versions)
The house edge here gets a healthy boost with the added distraction of multiple hands, which require faster thinking, ideally resulting (ideal for the house, that is) in less well-considered choices.
Single Deck Blackjack
Players who know blackjack strategy love single-deck blackjack, which offers the house a microscopic 0.15% edge.
A solid understanding of blackjack strategy coupled with the enormously better chances of keeping track of the cards already dealt (none dare call it counting) gives the player the best of all possible worlds.
Perfect Pairs Blackjack
This otherwise vanilla blackjack game (multi-deck) offers a side bet based on whether you think your first two cards will be a pair. Payout is for a perfect pair (suited pair), a colored pair (the paired cards are of the same color), and a red-black pair.
Jackpot Blackjack
This multi-deck blackjack game features a hot-drop progressive jackpot that randomly triggers after the progressive has reached $5,000. While betting higher amounts on your hands increases your chances of hitting the progressive, the trigger is random.
Ultimate Blackjack
This version of the game is for those who prefer their multideck blackjack with a side of poker and maybe a dash of rummy.
Let me explain. In addition to wagering and playing the game as in regular blackjack, the player can also place several side wagers based on his first two cards and the dealers first two cards.
One option is the poker side wager, paying on suited three of a kind, straight flushes, three of a kind, straights, and flushes.
The other side wager option is Pairseither for your hand or the dealers. This also involves your first two cardsor the dealers first two cardsand pays on the perfect pair (suited pair), colored pair (both cards of the same value are the same color), and red-black pair.
Blackjack Tournament
If you were concerned about there being such a thing as a MyBookie blackjack tournament, your worries are over.
On the other hand, if youve never heard of such a thing, heres the skinny: Tournament blackjack pits you against other players rather than the house. You pay an entry fee and sit at the blackjack table.
Theres still a dealer, however. And play continues as you would typically expect at a blackjack table, with your primary job being to beat that dealer.
Your chip pile is what puts you on the tourney leaderboard, however, and you will soon find yourself making choices you might not make during a regular blackjack session. Your goal is to outlast everyone else at the table.
For a better idea of how to make that happen, be sure to read our handy blackjack tournament guide.
21 Burn Blackjack
This blackjack variant offers the player the intriguing opportunity to burn (discard) the second card dealt and replace it with a new card. The player pays a burn bet equal to half his initial wager to exercise this option. A blackjack in 21 Burn Blackjack pays even money (sad emoji).
Pontoon Blackjack
This is a misnomer because while pontoon shares some similarities with blackjack, it has many significant rules that counter everything youve learned about blackjack.
Sure, the fact that getting a score of 21 with your first two cards is a pontoon rather than a blackjack isnt a shock or a surprise.
Both dealers cards being dealt face down are different and perhaps a bit concerning.
Important
Oh, and theres no such thing as a pushif your hand is equal to the dealers hand, you lose.
On the other hand, you can double down nearly as often as rabbits fall in and out of love. In fact, doubling downeven on three or more cardsis a major feature of the pontoon.
Pirate 21 Blackjack
Played like regular blackjack, pirate 21 blackjack is unique in that it uses the Spanish 48-card deck rather than the more universal French deck of 52 cards. Whats missing in the Spanish deck, you ask? The tens, of course. Sure, the jack, the queen, and the king are still there, but the ten-spot cards are missing.
This alters the odds of getting a blackjack since there are only 16 cards per deck to pair with an ace to score a blackjack. On the other hand, there are fewer cards to bust your hand.
Live Blackjack
As you would expect, MyBookie is one of the live online casinos that offers Live Dealer Blackjack.
The game offers multiple tables of play at three wagering levels: Bronze, Silver. and Gold.
The live dealer action allows players to play both the European and American style blackjack games. Added to those casino staples is the newest variant: Blackjack Early Payout (BJEP was designed and patented by Visionary), which takes the surrender feature to new levels.
BJEP permits early payouts on a players hand determined by the likelihood of winning the hand. That likelihood is based o the players cards and the dealers single-up card. Unlike a surrender, which only returns half the original wager, an early payout can be greater than the original amount of the players bet.
Banking (Score: 4)
MyBookie handles deposits and withdrawals professionally and provides a multitude of payment options, including BitCoin, BitCoin Cash, Visa, Mastercard, Person 2 Person, and litecoin.
There are fewer options on withdrawalsBitcoin or wire transfer. While reports say the system is easy to understand and use, some reports say withdrawals are sometimes a bit slow.
Please Note
Withdrawals may be made once a week (per withdrawal method), and MyBookie accepts these requests seven days a week.
MyBookie itself recommends players request withdrawals via BitCoin, which they say results in a review time (for verification) of two days, a delivery time of one day, and the processing is free.
As with all online casinos and sportsbooks, MyBookie expects players to fulfill any rollover obligations before requesting a withdrawal. Be sure to read all of MyBookies terms & conditions and its policies and procedures.
For more banking options, check out the best crypto gambling sites.
Security and Licensing (Score: 5)
MyBookie has been a fixture of the online gambling world since 2014. It is licensed and regulated by Curaao, a tiny island nation that is one of the more active licensers of online casinos and sportsbooks.
All play on MyBookie is in US dollars, although other currencies can be converted on site. Those wishing to use different currencies may want to handle the conversion themselves rather than accept MyBookies conversion rate.
All data that moves between the player and MyBookie.ag is via SSL (secure sockets layer, for those who care)a very high level of encryption.
Mobile Access (Score: 2.5)
Unlike some online casinos and sportsbooks, MyBookie does not require a special app to be downloaded to play.
Instead, it functions entirely in the browser (Chrome, MS Edge, Opera, Firefox, etc.). On mobile platforms like Androids and iPhones, it simply resizes its screens to fit the smaller screen of your phone.
This may work for some games, such as slot machines, but the resulting visual is too small for some to read clearly for a game like a blackjack. The game itself plays well, but it can be pretty challenging to drag a $1 chip the size of a mosquito across the screen with your index finger to place a bet.
This is my least favorite attribute of MyBookie. As the HR people like to euphemize, it is MyBookies biggest area of opportunity. You can always check out more viable options with a look at our best blackjack mobile apps.
Bonuses and MyBookies Rollover Requirements (Score: 4)
No MyBookie online blackjack review would be complete without a look at the operations various bonus offers and its rollover requirements.
The bonuses offered by MyBookie range from fair-to-middlin right up to quite generous. They include seasonal promo codes, sign-up bonuses, reload, and referral bonuses. These can add hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars in play to your account.
Of course, to earn that bonus play, the player must roll over the deposit and bonus amount several times.
MyBookies terms and requirements for rollover are consistent with the competitionand are a bit more liberal in some areas.
For Instance
For the sake of comparison, In comparison, MyBookie gives the player 100% credit for rollover on most of its slot games.
One caveat: MyBookie separates its bonus rollover requirements between the sportsbook and the casino. If you get a sign-up, welcome, or reload bonus from one side (e.g., the sportsbook), playing in the casino does not count for the sportsbook rollover. And vice-versa: Casino bonus rollover does not accrue through wagers in the sportsbook.
I dont see this as particularly worrisome, but separation could lead to misunderstandings if you arent aware of it.
Should You Make MyBookie Your Go-To Place for Blackjack?
Without a doubt, MyBookie is well worth adding to your portfolio of solid and trustworthy online casinos.
Its on our list of legitimate online casinos and is regularly ranked among the top online casinos by many independent reviewers.
I give MyBookie an overall grade of 4.1 out of 5, with what I consider its most important featurea variety of blackjack games offeredearning a solid 5.
Frankly, the sites only weakness is the mobile versionand if you dont usually play blackjack on your mobile phone, the low Mobile Access score shouldnt affect your decision to make MyBookie a regular stop.
Ready to play some blackjack? First check out this breakdown that reminds us all that the game isnt just about pure luck.
Even though the answer to the question Is blackjack skill or luck? seems obvious, it really isnt. Think of it this way: Anything you must study to make correct decisions during play is a skill game. But that would make 52-card pick-up a...
