Ohios record-breaking gambling revenue may be slowing down, still on pace to break 2021 record – cleveland.com

Posted: June 11, 2022 at 2:08 am

CLEVELAND, Ohio Ohios casinos and racinos hot streak may be showing signs of slowing down, but theyre still on pace to break the record set in 2021, and are bringing in much more revenue than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ohios casinos and racinos brought in $202 million in gambling revenue in May, down from the $209 million brought in during May 2021, according to reports Tuesday from the Ohio Casino Control and Lottery commissions. This is the money kept by the gambling houses, after paying out winnings, but before state taxes and fees.

Its well ahead of the $169 million of revenue brought in during May 2019. Ohios gambling establishments were closed in May 2020.

The four casinos saw little change, just one-fifth of a percent from 2021 in May. Revenue at Ohios seven racinos is down 6%.

So far in 2022, Ohios casinos and racinos have brought in $984 million of gambling revenue, ahead of the $954 million of revenue brought in by this time in 2021. The states gambling revenue broke a record last year, totaling $2.31 billion.

All three Cleveland-area gambling centers, however, were down in May from a year ago.

Revenue at Jack Thistledown Racino in North Randall was $15.8 million, down from the $19.1 million in May 2021.

JACK Cleveland Casino had $22.3 million in revenue, down from $22.5 million.

MGM Northfield Park had $24.4 million in revenue, down from $25 million.

About a third of this gambling revenue is turned over to the state in the form of fees and taxes.

Ohios seven racinos, which are overseen by the Ohio Lottery Commission and are limited to chance-based slot machines known as video lottery terminals. The states four casinos are in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Toledo and can have skill-based table games.

3 sentenced for ties to Flint Township illegal gambling facility – MLive.com

Posted: at 2:08 am

LANSING, MI Three people were sentenced earlier this month to jail time served, probation and community service for their roles in an illegal gambling facility shutdown following a state investigation.

Anthony Sutton, of Wilmington, North Carolina, Kara Schilling, of Flint, and Marjorie Brown, of Flint, were each sentenced to a day in jail with credit for time served and will be subject to random drug testing during their probationary periods.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board appreciates the support from the Attorney Generals office and police agencies across Michigan in helping to eliminate illegal gambling locations, which target low-income neighborhoods, lack player protections and can lead to other more serious crimes, said Henry Williams, MGCB executive director. These types of illegal gambling locations also deprive K-12 schools of tax funding, which the state charges on legal, regulated gambling.

All three defendants were sentenced in Ingham County Circuit Court Wednesday, June 1, by visiting Judge Geoffrey L. Neithercut.

All three were originally charged for their roles in operating Spin City, the former illegal gambling operation at G-3490 Miller Road in Flint Township.

The Michigan Department of Attorney General filed charges in mid-2019 after Michigan Gaming Control Board investigators pursued a report from Flint Township police about suspected illegal gambling at Spin City.

Sutton, 53, pleaded guilty to a gambling operations felony charge and was sentenced to a year of probation, 100 hours of community service and $1,058 in fees and costs.

Sutton also forfeited nearly $12,500 in cash to the Flint Township Police Department and 67 computers and games confiscated by the State of Michigan when a search warrant was served on Feb. 27, 2019, and the operation was closed.

Schilling, 38, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of maintaining a gambling house for gain and was sentenced to a year of probation, 50 hours of community service and $1,058 in fees and costs.

Brown, 53, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor of attempting to maintain a gambling house for gain and was sentenced to six months of probation, 100 hours of community service and $985 in fees and costs.

Flint Township police contacted the MGCB in June 2018 about reports of illegal gambling at Spin City. Following an investigation that began in July 2018, a cease-and-desist letter was sent in January 2019 giving Spin City two weeks to cease operating.

A search warrant was served at Spin City in late February 2019, and investigators seized 67 computers and slot-style gaming machines, $12,679 in cash and other miscellaneous items related to the operation.

The trio are not the only ones who have been charged in connection with suspected illegal gambling activity at Spin City.

David Hoppe, of St. Clair County, was sentenced in Genesee County Circuit Court to one-year probation and more than $1,000 in fines, costs, and fees after pleading guilty to conducting illegal gambling activities and using a computer to commit a felony at Spin City.

He had been accused of supplying illegal gambling games to Spin City between May 2017 and February 2019.

Everton announce club-record sponsorship deal with gambling company Stake.com – The Athletic

Posted: at 2:08 am

Everton have announced a club-record sponsorship deal with gambling company Stake.com.

The agreement, which will net Everton in excess of 10 million per season, replaces the clubs existing sponsorship deal with Cazoo.

In January 2020, chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale said in an ideal world that Everton would not be sponsored by a gambling company, and would prefer a different type of sponsor.

They were sponsored by Kenyan betting firm Sportpesa between May 2017 and May 2020, ending that deal two years early after a strategic review.

However, the club have now returned to the gambling world after announcing a multi-year partnership with Stake.com, believed to be the largest of any club outside the 'big six'.

Stake.com was founded in 2017, and also sponsor the UFC.

Last season, the clubs commercial plans were upset by the sanctioning of Uzbek-born billionaire Alisher Usmanov, with Everton ending several deals worth in the region of 20 million.

A club statement said: Everton Football Club has confirmed a club-record main partner agreement with Stake.com.

The multi-year partnership with the leading casino and sports betting platform will commence on 1 July and is the highest value front-of-shirt deal in the clubs 144-year history.

As Evertons main partner, the Stake.com brand will feature on front of the mens and womens playing shirts as well as appearing on screens and media backdrops at Goodison Park and Finch Farm and across the clubs digital platforms.

Barrett-Baxendale added: Stake.com is an ambitious organisation with impressive growth plans and were all very excited to enter into a partnership with them at this stage in their journey.

My talented colleagues in our new revenue team have made excellent progress in recent months and worked tirelessly to secure what is the biggest main partnership deal in the clubs history Id like to congratulate them on this achievement and, on behalf of everyone at the club, express my gratitude to Stake.com for choosing Everton as a long-term partner.

Northern Ireland Man Who Tried to Kill Gambling Consultant Ruled Insane – Casino.Org News

Posted on: June 10, 2022, 06:35h.

Last updated on: June 10, 2022, 11:08h.

A Northern Irishman accused of the attempted murder of his gambling consultant has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

The prosecution and the defense agreed that Cameron McClements, 26, stabbed his victim five times with a kitchen knife. The incident happened during a meeting at the consultants office in central Belfast on September 10, 2019.

McClements had arrived for a scheduled appointment. He later told police that it was nothing personal; he had merely decided to kill someone that day. He expressed regret that he had failed to kill the man, police said.

The evidence in this case is not in dispute, prosecution counsel Charles MacCreanor QC told the jury in Belfast. In this case, Mr. McClements accepts he repeatedly stabbed the victim. He accepts he tried to kill him with a knife.

The key issue in this case is one of insanity, he added. The defense has raised the defense of insanity on the functioning of the mind of Mr. McClements at the time of the attempted murder.

The defense has to produce evidence of this to you that it is more likely than not that Mr McClements was insane, that he was suffering from a mental abnormality at the time, MacCreanor said.

Two consultant psychiatrists testified that McClements was suffering from psychosis and an acute first episode of paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the attack. The prosecution did not contest the diagnoses.

The jury saw security video from inside the building showing McClements attacking the victim before chasing him down a hallway while office workers looked on in horror. The footage showed police arrive to arrest McClements, who was hunched down beside a door at the time.

The victim was taken to Belfasts Royal Victoria Hospital for two stab wounds to his back which had punctured both lungs two knife wounds to his chest, and one to his elbow.

Assailant and victim had reportedly met one through mutual friends and had got along amicably before the attack.

McClements had been reported by friends and family five days before the stabbing after disappearing from the Electric Picnic Music Festival, where he had been working. He was located a day later. The disappearance was described as out of character.

The jury unanimously found McClements not guilty of attempted murder and possessing a bladed article in a public place by reason of insanity.

The judge adjourned the hearing for two weeks when a date will be set for sentencing.

CISA, and FBI Expose PRC State-Sponsored Exploitation of Network Providers, Devices – National Security Agency

Posted: at 2:08 am

The National Security Agency (NSA), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) today, Peoples Republic of China State-Sponsored Cyber Actors Exploit Network Providers and Devices. The advisory highlights how Peoples Republic of China (PRC) actors have targeted and compromised major telecommunications companies and network service providers primarily by exploiting publicly known vulnerabilities. Networks affected have ranged from small office/home office (SOHO) routers to medium and large enterprise networks. The PRC has been exploiting specific techniques and common vulnerabilities since 2020 to use to their advantage in cyber campaigns. Exploiting these vulnerabilities has allowed them to establish broad infrastructure networks to exploit a wide range of public and private sector targets.General mitigations outlined in the advisory include: applying patches as soon as possible, disabling unnecessary ports and protocols, and replacing end-of-life network infrastructure. NSA, CISA, and FBI also recommend segmenting networks and enabling robust logging of internet-facing services and network infrastructure accesses. The advisory is broken down into three sections: an explanation of common vulnerabilities exploited by PRC state-sponsored cyber actors, an introduction of how telecommunications and network service provider targeting occurred through open source and custom tools, and an overview of recommended mitigations. The information in this advisory complements NSAs previous releases, Chinese State-Sponsored Cyber Operations: Observed TTPs and Chinese State-Sponsored Actors Exploit Publicly Known Vulnerabilities, and continues to highlight the cross-organizational partnerships between NSA, CISA, and FBI in protecting U.S. critical systems against PRC cyber actors.Read the full advisory for more details about this malicious cyber activity and how to take action against it to prevent further exploitation. For additional cybersecurity advisories, visit NSA.gov/Cybersecurity-guidance.

NSA Honored For Diversity In Surveillance Footage – The Onion

Posted: at 2:08 am

FORT MEADE, MDPraised as a leader in centering people from groups not traditionally represented onscreen, the National Security Agency was honored Monday for its diversity in surveillance footage. In a time when people from marginalized communities long ignored in the media have to fight for space on the screen, the NSA has used its vast network of surveillance cameras to center minority stories, said Terrence Walz of the American Civil Liberties Union, presenting a plaque to NSA director Paul Nakasone and singling out the agencys PRISM and Upstream initiatives for their focus on portraying people from minority groups in the environments in which they actually live. Many organizations pay lip service to minority perspectives, but the NSA really understands the assignment. It routinely centers people from every background in its surveillance effortsBlack or white, gay or straight, people of every creed and ethnic group are prominently featured in the NSAs work. In fact, there are many examples in which the NSA films only people from marginalized backgrounds, and its many hundreds of hours of footage highlight its commitment to ensuring these groups are seen onscreen. We commend the NSA for its dedication to centering underrepresented voices, and we hope it serves as an inspiration to others for telling more diverse stories. This is what America looks like. Nakasone added that he just hoped the NSAs work would encourage young people from marginalized backgrounds to see themselves and their stories as worthy of constant government surveillance.

Prophet remark row: Iran pulls down its version of meeting with NSA Ajit Doval – Times Now

"My understanding is that what you are referring to in a readout has been pulled down," said Bagchi, who was responding to a question on the issue.

According to news agency PTI, the now-deleted readout quoted Abdollahian as saying that Doval has reaffirmed the Indian government's respect for the Prophet Mohammad, saying offenders will be dealt with in an exemplary manner.

"Ajit Doval reaffirmed the Indian government and officials' respect for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), saying offenders will be dealt with, at the government and related bodies levels, in such a way that others will learn a lesson," the Iranian foreign ministry statement read.

"Amirabdollahian said Muslims are satisfied with the stance of Indian officials in dealing with the culprits," the statement added.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also hailed the Indian people and government for their respect for the divine faiths, especially the Prophet Muhammad, and also for the religious tolerance, historical coexistence, and friendship among followers of various religions in the country, readout further said.

Therefore, such raucous clamour neither suits India nor is rooted in India, and surely the followers of all religions in the Indian territory oppose such comments, the ministry statement quoted Abdollahian as saying.

EGBA and European Commission experts to conduct webinar on online gambling advertising and IPR – Yogonet International

Posted: at 2:08 am

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) and VIXIO GamblingCompliance will host a webinar discussion about intellectual property rights (IPR) and online advertising for gambling services on Thursday, June 16.

In 2021, there was a 55% decrease in advertising from major gambling brands appearing on IPR-infringing websites in the European Union, while advertising from all gambling brands decreased only marginally, according to organizers, who furthercite data showing that the gambling sector is responsible for 25% of advert impressions on IPR-infringing websites in the EU.

Key topics to be addressed include the role regulators can play in preventing gambling advertising on IPR websites, the debate around unlicensed operators as a potential cause for this issue, and how operators can ensure their affiliates do not promote their brand on illegal websites.

The expert panel will include Daniele Perrone, Senior Legal Advisor at EGBA; Anglique Monneraye, Policy Officer, DG GROW, European Commission; Filip Petru, Gambling and Affiliate Compliance Director, White Bullet; and Harrison Sayers, Journalist, VIXIO GamblingCompliance.

"The internets advertising ecosystem is very complex and can lead to advertising from legitimate brands, including gambling companies, finding itself placed on websites and apps which infringe upon IPR, such as streaming websites for sports, movies, or TV shows,"organizers explain. "These types of websites or apps generate their revenues by selling advertising space but the presence of advertising from legitimate brands on these platforms can confuse consumers and lead them to believe that the content provided on these platforms is legal."

"This webinar will explore the issue further and outline practical steps that gambling operators and their advertising affiliates can follow to promote responsible advert placement and protect IPR," they conclude.

Online registration is available here.

Hockey gambling expert’s personal experience shows good and bad of sports betting – CBC.ca

Posted: at 2:08 am

The first rule of sports betting: don't bet on sports.

That's what hockey gambling expertDom LuszczyszynofThe Athletictold CBC Sports' Morgan Campbell on the latest episode ofBring It In.

Campbell's full interview withLuszczyszynis featured among the video series'deep dive into all aspects of sports betting the good, the bad and the ugly. The video also features interviews with Northstar Bets CEO Michael Moskowitz and CBC Sports contributor Dave Zirin.

The episode is available exclusively on CBC Gem.

Luszczyszyn's statistical model, which weighsindividual players, team success, rest and game location to formulate win probabilities on any given game, informs daily betting guides he posts to the website.

He's notsure whether to call it an addiction.

"It's hard to really discern when it's become a part of my job and career and because I know that I'm good at it, it's hard to know where that line is,"Luszczyszynsaid."But I think for me going forward, knowing what I went through this year, knowing how dark things got, there are definitely signs and red flags of understanding where things are a bit too much and understanding and what point I need to stop."

The hockey writer fully detailed his experience with gambling in an April Twitter thread, weeks after single-game sports betting became legal in Ontario.

The move was a long-time comingand celebrated by many. But with it came the onslaught of advertisement from gambling companies trying to attract more users and their money.

The ease with which Ontarians can now gamble on sports leads to additional risk of financial troubles and addiction.

"The casual person going into sports bettingif they don't know any better, if they don't know who to follow, if they are just going by their gutthey'll probably lose money long-term,"Luszczyszynsaid.

To that end, he advised setting aside a bankroll (money one can afford to lose on gambling) and not moving past that limit, while allocating only up to three per cent of that total per each bet.
