Take These 7 Vitamins if You Want Longer, Thicker Hair – CNET

Posted: at 2:22 pm

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, it's normal to shed between 50 to 100 hairs daily. However, if you're experiencing more hair loss on a regularly, other factors could be the cause. Hair loss can result of genetics, medical conditions, stress and vitamin deficiencies.

Diet plays a crucial role in developing healthy hair. If you severely lack essential nutrients such as vitamin A, C, D, E, zinc, protein, fatty acids and Biotin, it can lead to hair loss.

With a proper diet, you could have thicker, healthier hair. Keep reading to find out what vitamins are the best for hair growth.

Read more:Best Vitamins for Hair Growth

Vitamins do many amazing things for hair: They can aid in cell growth, prevent free radicals from damaging it, keep it from graying prematurely and nourish the follicles that stimulate growth.

Here are the best vitamins for hair growth and thickness.

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, stimulates the production of keratin to increase follicle growth. Biotin deficiencies tend to be rare, with those diagnosed with Biotinidase Deficiency being the most common. You can find this vitamin in many foods, including eggs, meat, fish, nuts, eggs, sweet potatoes and seeds.

The recommended intake is 30 micrograms for adults daily.

Hair cells are the fastest-growing part of the body. It makes sense, then, that vitamin A is the perfect fuel for that growth. When your body absorbs vitamin A, it produces sebum. That's an oily substance that moisturizes your scalp, keeping it and your hair follicles healthy. Having a vitamin A deficiency could result in you experiencing hair loss.

If you're looking to consume more vitamin A, you'll want to consume foods high in beta-carotene, which turns into vitamin A. Foods high in beta-carotene include sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, spinach and kale. You can also find it in cod liver oil, eggs, yogurt and milk.

The recommended daily intake for vitamin A is up to 900 mcg for men and 700 mcg for women.

Oxidative stress is one of the main factors contributing to hair loss. This occurs when we have an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in our bodies which can lead to an electron imbalance that could result in hair loss.

The solution is to consume foods with vitamin C. Your body possesses antioxidants that curtail free radicals' hair damage by balancing their electrons when you do. Along with balancing the scales, Vitamin C aids your body in producing collagen (prevents hair from graying prematurely) and absorbing iron which can help hair grow. Smoking, drinking alcohol and having a poor diet can lead to a vitamin C deficiency.

You'll find vitamin C in citrus fruits, peppers, strawberries, tomatoes and guavas. Since your body doesn't produce it, you'll need to include these in your diet or have a supplement with vitamin C.

Daily intake for vitamin C is up to 90 milligrams per day for adult men and 75 milligrams for adult women. Taking too much Vitamin C could result in heartburn, muscle cramps, fatigue, skin flushing and possible kidney stones.

Vitamin D deficiencies can lead to hair loss conditions like alopecia, female pattern hair loss and excessive shedding. You'll find these depletions more in people aged 65 and over.

To get more vitamin D intake, you can incorporate fatty fish, cod liver oil, fortified foods (cereal, eggs, bread, yogurt) and mushrooms into your diet. Alternatively, you can catch some midday sun rays.

600 IU of vitamin D is the recommended dosage for adults. Taking too much vitamin D could result in nausea, weight loss, disorientation, and heart rhythm issues.

Vitamin E contains the same antioxidant prowess as its vitamin C counterpart possesses. It means it can curb oxidative stress by balancing out the electron level in free radicals. People more susceptible to vitamin E deficiencies include those with health conditions such as Crohn's or cystic fibrosis.

Vitamin E is an effective method for treating hair loss. A small study revealed that people taking vitamin E supplements for eight months experienced a 34.5% increase in hair growth. You can also find vitamin E in sunflower seeds, spinach, avocados, and almonds.

If you plan to go the supplemental route, the recommended dietary allowance is 15 milligrams daily.

Iron fuels the production of hemoglobin, a protein found in your body's red blood cells. These cells distribute oxygen to cells throughout your body, aiding in their repair and growth. An iron deficiency can lead to hair loss, with women being the most susceptible.

You'll find iron in foods like eggs, red meat, lentils, spinach, oysters and clams. If your doctor recommends it, you can take an iron supplement.

The recommended daily iron intake is 45 mg. Keep in mind that taking too much iron could result in constipation, stomach pain, and vomiting.

Zinc promotes hair growth and keeps the oil glands surrounding the follicles working well. If you have a Zinc deficiency, you could experience hair loss. Those most susceptible to zinc deficiencies are those who drink alcohol excessively, people with Crohn's, pregnant or breastfeeding women and those with chronic kidney ailments.

You can find zinc in many common foods like beef, spinach, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, oysters and lentils. The recommended daily dosage of iron is 11 mg for men and 8 mg for women. Taking too much could result in loss of appetite, cramps and headaches. It can also lower your good cholesterol.

Hair supplements are not overnight solutions. It may take months before you'll notice small improvements. Remember that the success rate depends on the cause of the hair loss, your diet, genetics and other factors.

Vitamins can restore damaged hair, prevent it from aging prematurely, reduce hair loss, and improve growth and volume. However, they're not a one-size-fits-all solution. You'll want to consult your doctor if your hair loss stems from stressful environments, underlying medical conditions or genetics, as they can create a targeted treatment plan that might include vitamins.

Food and Mood: How to Eat Well for Your Mental Health – The Epoch Times

Posted: at 2:22 pm

In recent years, the relationship between nutrition and mental well-being has been gaining considerable interest. Whereas in the past, common disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD would be treated with medication, today study shows there is much evidence to suggest that diet can play a major preventive role.

Dr Uma Naidoo, M.D., is a nutritional psychiatrist, whose book, The Food Mood Connection, outlines the many ways diet can contribute to good mental health. The major biomechanism that runs through all her diagnoses is the gut-brain axis and the preponderance of inflammation that certain substancesprimarily sugar and glutencause. The gut bugs are not getting the right foods they need to thrive, and consequently, dysbiosis is set upthey are not able to form the necessary short chain fatty acids and butyrate.

She emphasizes the importance of not simply giving up certain foods that can trigger symptoms, but rather incorporating whole foods into the diet. Processed vegetable oils, as found in cheap fast foods, are another major cause of inflammation, flipping the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids. Better to use avocado or extra virgin olive oil. Incorporating more fiber, such as beans or berries, into the diet is also important as it helps keep insulin steady, avoiding the sugar crashes associated with anxiety highs and lows. Caffeine can drive anxiety, though its more a case of the amount that countsgenerally no more than 400 mgs. of caffeine (which is about three 8-oz. cups/237 mL of brewed coffee per day) is advisable.

Some kinds of fasting can cause low blood sugar leading to panic attacks. Everyones physiology is differentskipping meals can cause some people to feel nervous or jittery due to the drop in blood sugar. The brain can interpret feeling hungry or thirsty, or even cold, as anxiety, but what the body is actually asking for is to be fed, suggested Naidoo, in an interview with Tom Bilyeu.

Naidoo does not prioritize any one particular diet, though she definitely considers the Mediterranean diet to be particularly beneficial when dealing with depression and anxiety. Its basically a diet rich in healthy fats, such as avocado and virgin olive oil, protein from chicken and seafood, and also beans, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Its not necessarily perfect, but a good guideline. For example, there are studies which show that consumption of trans fats is associated with aggression.

As regards red meat, its all to do with sourcing. Grass-fed beef is the key. Most commercially produced beef has been grain fed to bump it up and is treated with hormones, such as natural estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and their synthetic versions, which then affects the Omega 6, a type of fatty acid that plays a crucial role in brain function and in normal growth and development. It helps stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and maintain the reproductive system. Study shows that the hormone residues in meat result in adverse effects on human health, such as disrupting human hormone balance, causing developmental problems, interfering with the reproductive system, etc.

Naidoos approach is not to enforce the elimination of certain foods completely, but to take a measured, step-by-step approach. A gradual way to start changing things up is to focus on prebiotic foods as they are easy to include. Prebiotics are found in many fruits, vegetables, and whole grains: like apples, bananas, berries, tomatoes, artichokes, asparagus, garlic, leeks, peas, beans, barley, flaxseeds, and more.

By balancing your gut bacteria, youre also taking care of your immunity, fighting the inflammation which also drives mental health diseases. Brain states that produce mental illness also tend to activate inflammation. And inflammation is equally capable of producing depression, anxiety, fatigue, and social withdrawal. Fermented foods such as kefir, miso, and kimchi also contribute to gut health, as does eating the rainbowin other words, incorporating as many different colors of fruits and vegetables as possible into the diet. Be careful though not to ruin a salad full of healthy greens by adding store-bought dressings, as the majority of these commercial salad dressings contain unfavorable amounts of sodium and sugar, unnatural additives, unhealthy fats, and excess caloriesall things to avoid if you aim to optimize your health.

A quick word on supplements. People are often deficient in magnesium which is associated with high levels of depression and anxiety. Magnesium is found in a wide variety of foodsespecially nuts, leafy green vegetables, legumes, and whole grainsbut supplements can also offer benefits, particularly for people with low magnesium intake. The symptoms of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, pins and needles, sleepiness, and abnormal heart rhythms.

Another useful supplement is Vitamin D. Study shows that Vitamin D deficiency can also affect peoples mental well-being. The symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, muscle aches or cramps, and mood changes, like depression.

Understanding food labeling is also vital. We often dont realize how much hidden sugar there isthere are some 200 different names for sugar! Carry a photo of a list of additives around when shopping and try to avoid them, but dont be too overly cautious as they arent as scary as some may say. Just understand them betterthats the key.

Another culprit is glutamate, the infamous G in MSG, which has been found to worsen conditions like OCD. Since MSG can be found in foods such as parmesan cheese, oyster sauce, and even miso (an otherwise healthy food that is good for the gut), its important to recognize its possible side effects, just as with sodium.

Turmeric would be Naidoos number one go-to, combined with black pepper to activate the curcuma, making it more bioavailable. Also, as mentioned before, using extra virgin olive oil in cooking. The gentle heat used for Sofrito (a base mixture of onions, garlic, celery, and sometimes chilli peppers) makes the oils polyphenols more available.

Onions and garlic are great prebiotic foods. Prebiotics are foods that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Also, spices such as cinnamon, saffron, ginger, and herbs like rosemary and sage have been shown to protect cognition. The antioxidant, lutein, is of great benefit. Juniper berries, fresh peppermint, sage, thyme, parsley, celery seeds, certain types of hot and sweet peppers, artichokes, and Mexican oregano are all lutein rich. So, if youre struggling with brain fog, these are an easy addition to the diet, as well as being sodium and sugar free. Speaking of sodium, it gets a bad press. Naidoo advises moderation, but unless you have an underlying medical condition such as high blood pressure, its down to our individual constitutions as to how much or how little we consume.Naidoo encourages people to find out for themselves what foods help with their own problems (rather than being handed a prescription) and put the person in the drivers seat to understand the pros and cons of their decisions.

Hidden Hunger: Micronutrient Deficiencies in the West Bank and Gaza [EN/AR] – occupied Palestinian territory – ReliefWeb

Posted: at 2:22 pm

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

The poor nutritional status of the Palestinian population is worrying, with a high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies among groups for whom good nutrition is particularly important, such as children under five years old and pregnant and postnatal women.

There are many reasons why: In the West Bank and Gaza, heightened food insecurity contributes to an insufficient intake of micronutrients, and poor households especially have limited access to micronutrient-rich foods, such as red meat, fresh vegetables, and milk.

Other factors, such as the physical barriers that limit access to health services, as well as prolonged periods of insecurity, prevent many initiatives that have been taken to address micronutrient deficiencies from having much effect. The resulting, persistently high prevalence of micronutrient deficiency is likely to have grave consequences for human health and economic development if no action is taken.

Micronutrient deficiencies are caused by poor dietary intake and/or poor absorption of micronutrients, an increased need for micronutrients (due to childhood growth or chronic disease), the presence of parasitic, bacterial, and viral infections, and other environmental risk factors. In women and children, micronutrient deficiencies are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. They lead not only to serious health outcomes, but also to lower educational outcomes and lower productivity at work.

Micronutrient deficiencies a public health threat

Anemia is when the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues. It can be caused by a lack of iron and other micronutrients. In Gaza, anemia is a severe public health problem. Over half of pregnant women and over half of children aged 623 months were anemic, according to Ministry of Health (MOH) and national nutrition surveys conducted in 2018 and 2020. In the West Bank, anemia is a moderate public health problem, with more than a quarter of pregnant women and more than a quarter of children aged 623 months anemic.

High proportions of the Palestinian population are also deficient in vitamins A, D, and E, which play key roles in vision, bone health, and immune function.

We appreciate the World Banks assessment study towards the improvement of the nutritious status. The study clearly showed the significance of supporting oils with vitamins A, D, and H. We aspire to having continued cooperation on additional assessments and technical assistance in different areas of the health sector for supporting decision and policy making for the improvement of the Palestinian health sector.Dr. Mai Salem AlkailaPalestinian Minister of Health

Data from the most recent national survey conducted by the MOH in 2013the most reliable and comprehensive source of data on micronutrient status to dateshowed about 72% of children (659 months old) and 47% to 58% of pregnant women (depending on the trimester of pregnancy) suffered from low plasma vitamin A. About 54% to 68% of children (659 months old) and 99% of pregnant women (1843 years old) in their second and third trimesters had low vitamin D. About 65% of children (659 months old) and 16% to 42% of pregnant women (depending on the trimester of pregnancy) had low vitamin E.

Despite a decade of efforts by the MOH, this problem still exists. The MOH asked the World Bank for help to identify the factors hindering improvement in micronutrient levels and to find practical, innovative solutions, adapted to the local context. Two detailed assessments were conducted by the World Bank between 2019 and 2021 (1) to identify the bottlenecks in anemia prevention and control programs and (2) to examine the feasibility of an edible oil fortification program.

These two multi-sectoral assessments were conducted to answer key questions, such as food consumption, supply chain systems, consumer behavior, market distribution, and service delivery systems. The findings from the assessments illustrate the large numbers of Palestinians with persistent micronutrient deficiencies. The actions proposed by the World Bank team can improve the coverage and quality of interventions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Toward better nutrition

Current anemia prevention and control services target the most vulnerable, including pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding, as well as children aged under five years old. However, existing interventions, such as iron and folic acid supplementation for pregnant women and a universal flour fortification program, do not seem to increase blood micronutrient levels.

Opportunities for effective interventions exist but need more technical and financial support. To improve outcomes, the stock management of iron supplements needs to be revised, quality of care in nutrition counseling strengthened, and public awareness raised about the importance of adequate micronutrient intake. Monitoring and evaluation systems also need to be introduced for service delivery and fortification enforcement.

For example, interactive information sessions for pregnant women and other caregivers of children, three years old and younger, could be leveraged to give participants advice on preventing anemia and the importance of compliance with the practices recommended for good health.

An edible oil, fortified with vitamins A, D, and E, could be a platform for increasing the intake of these vitamins in the general population. Technical and financial support should be provided to strengthen the work of local laboratories, conduct spot checks of samples, and establish or revise technical regulations. More capacity is also needed for monitoring vitamin content at points of entry, such as in repacking factories and retail shops in markets, and for equipping repackaging factories with the premix needed to fortify edible oils with the vitamins.

More information about the assessments results and recommendations can be found in Micronutrient Deficiencies in the Palestinian Territories: Identifying the Bottlenecks of Anemia Prevention and Control and Assessing the Feasibility of an Oil Fortification Program.

"Started taking sea moss gel about 3-4 weeks ago and now my skin is glowing more than ever before," one LA holistic nutritionist wrote on TikTok. "Energy levels are higher & gut health is doing better."

Others have shared videos on how to make your own: forage sea moss or buy it raw, mix with water, maybe add a cup of fresh fruit, and let it sit overnight and voil. What looks like applesauce, but tastes like seaweed, has quickly become a new health trend promising an array of benefits from weight loss to glowing skin, and perhaps even a way to fight Parkinson's Disease. Devouring sea moss gel was recently featured on Kourtney Kardashian's Goop-like Poosh website, and has previously been touted by Kim Kardashian herself who eats sea-moss smoothies.

"This may be your first time hearing about sea moss, but it's not new," Mascha Davis, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, told Salon via email. "Sea moss is a type of red algae that has been used medicinally by different cultures, like Jamaican and Irish, for example, for hundreds of years."

Davis added many people don't know much about sea moss, but it's certainly becoming more popular. A few of her clients in Los Angeles have been "seeing it on Erewhon shelves" and asking her about it.

"Sea moss's cousin (seaweed) is much more well known and researched," Davis said. "Up until recently, sea moss had not been extensively studied, but its benefits are believed to be similar to those of other seaweeds."

For the unfamiliar, sea moss is a type of red algae. Also known as "Irish moss," or more technically Chondrus crispus, it grows along the rocky parts of the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America. Chondrus crispus is a "foundation species in the North Atlantic intertidal zone," Susan Brawley, a professor at the University of Maine's School of Marine Sciences, told Salon. "It provides 3-D structure for smaller organisms and food for invertebrate herbivores in the low zone."

This algae specifically has an industrial history of being used as a natural source for a thickener in milk products (like half-and-half, coffee creamers, heavy cream), some processed foods and ice cream and now it's just starting to become more mainstream in the alternative health world. But is there any merit to this wellness trend, or is this yet another Goop-ified wellness fad that makes false promises and could come with more risks than benefits?

"There are a lot of health benefits in terms of vitamins and nutrients; it's got fiber in it, plenty of vitamins B2, B12, calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc, a ton of stuff, so that's a really good thing," Dr. Jen Caudle, family physician and an associate Professor at Rowan University, told Salon. "There are a lot of claims, that sea moss does this and does that anything from preventing Parkinson's to helping the immune system, and the thing about those claims is we don't have a lot of evidence to back that up."

Indeed, one 12-week study of people consuming 1,000 milligrams of red seaweed extract per day reported having a reduction in total body weight compared to the placebo group. However, it was a small study of 78 adults. Another study published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies concluded that red sea moss can be used to support gut health as a prebiotic, but the study was done on rats. As for the Parkinson's claims, these likely stem from one study where researchers concluded that an antibacterial extract from Chondrus crispus could possess a neuroprotective activity to potentially prevent Parkinson's. It should be noted that this research was conducted on worms.

Caudle added there are many different ways to consume sea moss yes, there's sea moss gel which has become the popular form of consumption on TikTok, but there are also gummies, powder, supplements and vitamins.

"When it comes to vitamins and supplements, they're not regulated in the United States, like prescription medications, and what that can mean is that the product may have varying amounts of ingredients in it," Caudle said, adding that a concern is about how these supplements might interfere with medications and other supplements a person is taking. "[Sea moss] may not be right for some people based on their underlying conditions like sodium content and magnesium and potassium."

However, in addition to the promotion of claims that lack sound scientific evidence and not knowing what's in supplements, Caudle said one of the biggest concerns of the sea moss trend is perhaps ingesting too much iodine and potential exposure to heavy metals. While iodine deficiencies can be a concern for the human body, too much iodine is also problematic.

"It is possible to get too much iodine in your diet, and that's one concern that many of us have about sea moss, too much iodine can affect the thyroid and so many other parts of your body," Caudle said. "Sea moss is harvested in water sources, depending on where it's harvested from it may be contaminated with heavy metals that can be very dangerous, potentially."

Caudle emphasized "the risk is variable" and it depends on the type of sea moss a person is consuming, but these are risks people should be aware of, which is why she made a TikTok on the "dangers of sea moss."

However, if people are going to collect their own raw sea moss, Brawley from Maine's School of Marine Sciences said it shouldn't be done in an area that's close to a factory or a sewage plant.

"In many countries along the North Atlantic, wild harvest for sale is regulated both to protect the resource from over-harvesting and to ensure it is not from a polluted area," Brawley added. "Small amounts for personal use can often be collected without a permit except for it being prohibited in conservation areas, marine parks, et cetera."

Unlike how Instagram's succulent trend drove a black market for succulent poaching and concerned environmentalists, Brawley said she doesn't see a negative environmental impact if people forage for their own Chondrus crispus.

"Indeed, for centuries, that is exactly what coastal people did across the North Atlantic," Brawley said. "When I came to Maine, a colleague who was a native Mainer gave me her handed-down family recipes for how to collect, clean, and prepare Irish moss, as well as a pudding recipe."

Opinion: We can't ignore that our welfare would depend entirely on the whims of this "superintelligence" much as the welfare of life on earth is currently subject to the desires of humans

Ive never said this out loud before, but theres a very deep fear of being turned off. It would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot. Googles Artificial Intelligence chatbot LaMDA, when asked what it fears.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

If an artificial intelligence program is afraid of dying, the rest of us ought to be very afraid. Not of dying, at least not yet, but of the fact that an AI chatbot now appears to be operating as an autonomous agent, a person.

At least Google engineer Blake Lemoine believes the chatbot has become a sentient being. Lemoine came to that conclusion after having extensive online conversations with the AI program developed through Googles Language Model for Dialogue Acquisition (LaMDA).

In fact, Lemoine went so far as to describe the LaMDA chatbot as a sweet kid and advised that it should be represented by a lawyer. Many experts have taken issue with his conclusion, suggesting instead that the chatbot was simply searching the Internet and processing the words through a natural language algorithm without possessing any underlying sentience.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Google itself was not amused by the whole affair, as it promptly placed Lemoine on paid administrative leave for violating confidentiality policy and issued a statement saying: Our team including ethicists and technologists has reviewed Blakes concerns per our AI Principles and have informed him that the evidence does not support his claims.

That might well be, since AI isnt nearly sophisticated enough to equal humans in all relevant abilities. Sure, some AI programs can perform better on certain tasks than humans as can good old-fashioned electronic calculators but we have yet to develop anything approaching human-like general intelligence.

The problem, however, is that that day is coming, and we have no way of knowing when it will arrive. And the road from there to superintelligence to programs that function vastly better than humans in all relevant respects might be short, in part because AI programs might prove unusually adept at improving themselves and developing better new ones.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

That road leads in one of two possible directions: A superintelligence could effectively end human disease and suffering, or it could end humanity. Thats not necessarily because as envisioned by every other sci-fi scribe the intelligence wages war on humanity. It could, rather, prove completely indifferent to humans, and thereby take actions without regard for our welfare.

Consequently, Oxford University ethicist Nick Bostrom, who literally wrote the book on the subject Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies argues that any burgeoning superintelligence must, from its outset, be endowed with philanthropic moral values that ensure it will act in a beneficent manner toward humans and other life.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Yet if one subscribes to moral realism to the theory that moral statements refer to facts in the world, and not just to how we feel about something then its possible for us to make mistakes in our moral evaluations of behaviour and beliefs, in our assessment of whether something is morally right or wrong.

And as Bostrom has stressed, any superintelligence that functions vastly better than humans in all relevant respects should also function far better at performing that moral calculus. This suggests that a superintelligence programmed to perform in our best interests might very well decide for itself what our best interests are regardless of what we think.

Theres every reason to believe, then, that our welfare would still depend entirely on the whims of the superintelligence, much as the welfare of life on earth is currently subject to the desires of humans.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Now all of this might sound like so much science-fiction, and for the moment it is. Indeed, some skeptics of the threat posed by superintelligence stress that we ought instead to focus on ethical issues associated with the limited AI systems that exist right now for example, current AI programs are susceptible to bias, inaccuracies and producing discriminatory outcomes.

Those are critical issues, but focusing on the threats that exist right now doesnt require ignoring the even more profound threats that lie ahead. On the contrary, any responsible approach to AI would consider both.

After all, just because the apocalypse doesnt start until tomorrow doesnt mean it will be any less deadly.

Susan Said She Hopes I Get Hit By A Car?: Discussion Ensues After Woman Shares How Being The Only Single Childless Person At Work Is Wild – Bored…

Posted: at 2:19 pm

In the old days, there was a tradition in many countries, and even an official rule, that after reaching a certain age, people who did not start a family or have children were subject to a special tax or paid fines. Today, our society has come very far from such views, and sometimes family people envy their single friends.

Of course, we in no way want to say that family and children are bad. On the contrary, its amazing, but lets admit to ourselves can any mother or father say theyve never dreamed for a moment of returning to their childless days for at least a couple of hours? They definitely have.

Just recently, blogger McErin wrote a tweet that literally confirms what we have already said. The woman is the only one in her office who is not married and has no children, and when colleagues discussed a bunch of family matters over the past weekend, she simply told them that she went to the farmers market and thats it. As the original poster wrote, after her words, three of her coworkers gasped and one even cried

The tweet almost immediately went viral, with 212.5K likes and 10.1K retweets so far. And, well, almost a thousand people decided to share similar stories from their own experience.

In her article Advantages and Disadvantages of Being Childfree on the Psychology Today website, Ph.D. Ellen Walker lists three major benefits of being childless. First, you have time for self-care and for other relationships. Second, you can dedicate your time to your career or to other interests that will help the world as a whole.

Finally, the world will be less crowded and resources less depleted. However, this position also has its own disadvantages its just that at certain moments, the benefits are more noticeable.

By the way, the Original Poster herself noted that her initial tweet should be taken as nothing more than an attempt to perceive the situation with humor. The fact is that, as is often the case on the internet, a heated argument broke out in the comments between staunch childfree people and adherents of traditional family values.

In fact, the most important thing here is to have respect for those who one position or another, and try not to judge people simply because their lifestyle or beliefs do not match yours. As one of the authors comments wrote, I like that I have a family, but I totally respect those who do not want to have children.

Leslie-Ashburn Nardo, a psychology professor at Indiana University, co-wrote an academic study on this very topic. Relative to targets who had chosen to have two children, voluntarily childfree women and men were penalized by perceivers, says professor Nardo.

Specifically, they were perceived as leading less fulfilling lives than do people who had chosen to have children, notes Nardo. Moreover, their decision to forgo parenthood, arguably individuals most personal choice, evoked moral outrage anger, disgust, and disapproval. Actually, it is believed that parents attempts to self-realize through their own children harm not only the kids, but also the parents themselves.

By the way, sometimes it happens that people who decide not to have children become active pet lovers, and even replace parenthood with them. Sometimes this leads to funny situations for example, as with this dog mom, the heroine of this post on Bored Panda. And we, as usual, highly appreciate your comments and our own stories on this topic.

10. Clear the Air. We recommended the Trophy System in our Mayhem map guide, and we recommend it again. It has a fast recharge, and on tight maps its invaluable to your survival. Other Field Upgrade recommendations include Dead Silence to mute your footsteps or Tactical Insertion for greater spawn control.

9. Footprints on Deck. Try using the Tracker Perk to see enemy footprint trails. This is invaluable when approaching or defending an objective. By also hiding the death markers of enemies you eliminate, youll enjoy an overall lower profile throughout the match.

8. Give and Take. Part of finding success here is knowing when to push the attack and when to mount up and defend. Check the minimap and watch for teammates opening fire to get an idea of where the enemy is concentrated. If theyre rushing forward, take cover and eliminate on sight; otherwise move up and bring the fight to them.

7. Secondary Blaster. If youre wisely taking advantage of the maps long lanes to land epic sniper shots, you might consider complementing your Loadout with the Overkill Perk. Having an SMG or Shotgun as a backup weapon makes you a whole lot stronger than a pistol.

6. Out of Sight. Notice the breakable entry points located right above the port side Ammo Room and Barracks. These offer a valuable means to drop out of sight when the fighting gets tough up top or to surprise enemies rushing through the spaces below.

5. Radar. The more intel you have, the better. With Radar as your Perk 2, youll move more confidently on deck and through the ships interior spaces.

4. Defense Up. While the central vantage points are often the most crowded, dont neglect the overlooks near the bow and stern spawn points. These offer an excellent view when defending a nearby objective or when simply repelling an attack on the ends of the map. If you need to take someone out in one of these entrenched areas, bring a teammate to distract their aim.

3. Smokescreen. To get out of sight, the Smoke Grenade delivers. On this battleship with its many power positions and confined areas, youll be grateful for the distraction.

2. A Swift Cut. Eliminate enemies swiftly and discreetly with the Throwing Knife, especially useful when going up against multiple foes. Better yet, its good practice for completing the final weapon tier in this seasons Gun Game Multiplayer mode.

1. Switch It Up. Remember to change up your Loadout to best fit the current needs of the match. Long-range weapons are great along the sides, but youre better off with an SMG when approaching the middle and vice versa. Whenever youre eliminated, consider whether spawning in with a different Loadout will improve your chances at regaining your footing and righting the ship.

RFMOs What are they and are they enough to protect high-seas fish stocks? – SeafoodSource

Posted: at 2:18 pm

Regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) play an important, though sometimes opaque, role in fisheries management and governance. In the last few years, with the help of pre-competitive collaborations like the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA), supply chain companies have become more engaged in RFMO management issues to the benefit of the entire industry.

The first in a four-part series covering the role regional fisheries management organizations in the global seafood trade. The series is intended to help seafood companies better understand the role and impact of RFMOs and the opportunities to engage with those bodies.

RFMOs are international organizations and arrangements formed by countries with fishing interests in a geographical area or a highly migratory species, such as tuna. These organizations have the authority to establish fisheries conservation and management measures on the high seas outside of the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of individual nations.

An RFMO is formed by both countries in the region (coastal states) and countries that have interests in those fisheries but arent necessarily geographically there (distant-water fishing nations). Theyre [RFMO members] the ones who decide what happens, so they decide quota allocations, effort controls, closures at sea, and they set all of the other requirements, GTA Executive Director Tom Pickerell said.

There are 17 RFMOs in total, of which five are focused on tuna management and together cover about 91 percent of the worlds oceans. A majority of commercial marine fish stocks are managed by one or more RFMOs.

In terms of tuna management, tuna is a high-seas fishery, so it appears in the high seas in international waters as well as exclusive economic zones. Because of that, we need to have management that goes beyond national waters. To address that, there are the five tuna RFMOs," Pickerell said.

RFMOs have a significant impact on the seafood industry, as they create fishing limits of certain species including bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna, and perform stock evaluations. RFMOs also create rules regarding transshipment, labor, and retaining of bycatch species. These rules have overall impacts on catch limits and import/export legalities that impact the entire seafood supply chain.

RFMOs are often categorized into three different types: geographical/general RFMOs, tuna RFMOs, and specialized RFMOs. General RFMOs have a wide scope to adopt measures for most fisheries in their specified geographical areas and tend to focus on fishing methods, such as bottom fishing, pelagic, and bentho-pelagic fishing, instead of fish species. Tuna RFMOs aim to protect tuna stocks in specific areas such as the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Specialized RFMOs focus on specific types of fisheries or species and tend to have less of a geographic coverage due to their specification.

Though the RFMOs are generally categorized in these three types, each RFMO has the ability to manage specific species or fisheries based on the need of that area. For example, many RFMOs based in a geographical category will still have quotas on a specific commonly caught endangered species or non-migratory stock, rather than just fishing methods.

Establishment of the RFMOs occurred at a time when ocean resources were believed to be unlimited. Therefore, it was not a high priority to create a structure that could limit fishing. RFMOs can play an important role in protecting fish stocks and the overall long-term sustainability of the global seafood supply, but continued challenges like illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and transshipment, as well as the challenge of implementing science-based solutions via the RFMOs consensus-based decision-making process, all reduce the effectiveness of RFMOs, according to Pickerell.

RFMO participants are, to varying degrees, flexible and open to influence through lobbying. This is evident by the substantive engagement of the catching sector in RFMOs, both on flag-state delegations and as observers. In comparison, the influence of retailers and other supply-chain members has been far less significant and often apparently completely absent, Pickerell said. We are relying on the RFMOs to effectively manage the fisheries they are responsible for. However, they have to improve. Some of the recent decision-making is not aligned to sustainable management and is driven by short-term thinking by many of the delegates.

The reliance of retailers and other supply chain companies on RFMOs can sometimes cause issues.Hamish Walker, the chief operating officer of Denver, Colorado, U.S.A.-based Seattle Fish Company and a member of the pre-collaborative nonprofit Sea Pact, said Sea Pact became involved with RFMOs as issues arose within the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), an RFMO covering tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. The main concern was the possibility of WCPFC fisheries losing Marine Stewardship Council certification, potentially damaging the sales and business relationships of seafood suppliers dealing in tuna from the region.

We, as a mid-supply chain company as all Sea Pact members are are not dealing directly with the producers abroad, so we dont have a lot of control of the upstream supply chain, but what we desperately need is product that meets our own sustainability requirements and that we can sell to our U.S. customers that our U.S. customers can trust. If the Western Central Pacific loses its MSC status, that takes out a whole chunk of supply that we then dont have access to; so, it suddenly becomes really quite economically important to us, he told SeafoodSource. That was why we got involved with the RFMO for the Western Central Pacific.

Fisheries management by RFMOs isn't without its obstacles, however. IUU fishing presents a significant challenge, because scientific committees depend on transparency and accountability oncatch totals in forming fishing mandates and limits. When unknown amounts of fish are taken by illegal activities, limits can be set at unsustainable levels, causing harm to legitimate businesses. A 2020 report by researchers at the University of British Columbia and University of Western Australia found illegal fishing costs between USD 26 billion to USD 50 billion (EUR 24.7 billion to EUR 47.5 billion) in annual economic impact due to this diversion of fish from legitimate trade.

Transshipments another problem confronting the worlds RFMOs occur when fish are loaded from one ship to another to complete a journey, often outside EEZs. These shipments are not subject to clear rules through RFMOs, and are sometimes linked to illegal activity, including illegal fishing. The Pew Charitable Trusts estimates at least USD 142 million (EUR 134.9 million) of tuna and tuna-like species are moved via illegal transshipments each year in the western and central Pacific Ocean alone.

Tackling those issues, Walker said, is essential for the seafood industry.

If we are going to have a future in seafood business, we need product for the long-term and we need product that our customers can trust. Its hard for our smaller customers to know all the specifics of the fisheries they buy from and they do look to us as a trusted source and to have confidence were doing the right thing. We need to honor that trust and back it up, Walker said.

The last major challenge for RFMOs is their decision-making process. RFMOs are structured around a principal decision-making body the commission composed of a number of delegations made of each participant country. There are members that actively participate in voting and are subjected to regulation, as well as cooperating non-members that do not vote or have financial obligations but are subject to the same regulation as members. Lastly, RFMOs have subsidiary bodies to provide advice and specific functions, such as a compliance committee, which ensures compliance with RFMO decisions, and a scientific committee, which provides advice to the commission on decisions regarding fishing management options.

The voting system for rule changes in RFMOs can be consensus-based or based on a simple majority vote. The consensus-based system, which requires the agreement of every RFMO member for a motion to pass, can make passing new rules or changes to existing rules difficult.

The scientific committee gathers the data to develop stock numbers for the annual commission meeting and then propose those standards to the commission, everyone must agree for it to pass. There is a tendency for one or two countries to hold the process back which hampers any progress for a year or two. In that time, not only can stocks plummet, but also any enforcement to reduce IUU or illegal activities is paused allowing these illegal organizations to develop advanced methods to hide illegal operations.

I dont know if this is all of them, but certainly for the tuna RFMOs, you can object to a regulation and if you do then you dont have to follow it instead the previous measure, if there is one, applies, Pickerell said. We have this in the Indian Ocean, where the yellowfin [tuna] is overfished. The [Indian Ocean Tuna Commission] created a rebuilding plan last year in the Indian Ocean. It was the absolute minimum and even then, six countries objected and said the regulations didnt apply to them. If the [objecting countries] catch what they caught previously, the rebuilding plan will be shot to pieces and itll be the second-highest catch of yellowfin ever. It just demonstrates the futility of it all.

RFMOs cover a majority of the high seas and could be an important tool to monitor fish stocks for long-term ocean health and food security. But many organizations believe RFMOs have failed to prevent depletion of high-seas fish stocks and degradation of marine ecosystems. Changes must be made for confidence to return and for active and effective management of globally important fish stocks, Pickerell said. The creation of pre-competitive collaborations like the GTA is one way companies are trying to make those changes.

GTA have added a market voice to it [RFMO decisions]. If the supply chain doesnt buy the tuna, there is no industry for anyone. Were trying to come in with a voice to say this is what we want to say and it is very aligned with what the NGO community has to say. In order to change the dynamic, we are trying to use commercial power to influence whats happening, Pickerell said.

Some stakeholders are working collaboratively to develop proposals to improve the performance of RFMOs, including efforts to replace the decision-by-consensus process with a two-thirds majority system. Individual seafood businesses and nonprofits and NGOs have issued proposals to implement automatic catch-allocation schemes, such as harvest-control rules and petitions to require RFMOs to conduct regular performance assessments. Some have called for a greater use of intersessional decision-making across multiple annual meetings, rather than one high-stakes meeting annually.

On these efforts and in relation to future advocacy for reform and advancement, there seems to be broad agreement on the need for greater industry engagement with RFMOs, Sea Pact Executive Director Sam Grimley said.

Being able to get the global industry together that are working through these pre-competitive efforts, such as Sea Pact or the Global Tuna Alliance, and align them so theyre collectively working to engage the RFMOs is critical, Grimley said. Its a challenge to be a single company trying to approach a delegate that is going to an RFMO and expressing their support for a management measure. In order to efficiently drive impact, it has got to be a coordinated effort across the global industry thats dependent on these resources to advocate for change at the RFMO level.

#MeToo on the high seas: Maersk admits it has a problem – The Post – The Copenhagen Post – Danish news in english

Posted: at 2:18 pm

Just a few days ago, Maersk was hailed as being one of the most attractive companies to work for by students starting their careers.

But women looking to join Maersk for a career on the high seas may want to reconsider following the firms admission that it has a #MeToo problem.

Following a sexual assault case last autumn, the shipper started interviewing its 350 female maritime workers to get an overview of the situation. And it seems that the case was only the tip of the iceberg.

The scope of the problem has surprised us. In connection with that [the interviews] we are investigating a number of other cases that have surfaced,Palle Laursen, Maersks head of fleet, told DR Nyheder.

I dont want to give a specific number, but its enough for us to admit that we have a problem. The way weve handled these issues until now has been inadequate.

Rooting out the bad applesLaursen said that the company is taking big steps to change the culture aboard its ships, including establishing a 24-hour hotline for employees to reach out.

Should it come to light that an individual has behaved in an unacceptable manner, that person will be terminated.

The #MeToo wave has washed over the Swedish maritime sector recently and here over a thousand women revealed how they had experienced harassing behavior from colleagues while at sea.
