NFL betting: Can Justin Herbert take another step and push for the MVP in 2022? – Yahoo Sports
Posted: April 9, 2022 at 3:52 am
We're still five months away from the start of the NFL season, but it's not too early to look forward to next year. Exploiting the futures market during the offseason allows bettors the opportunity to try and beat the market and get the best of numbers before the rest of the world starts paying attention in late summer.
Aaron Rodgers has won back-to-back NFL MVP awards, and he's a co-favorite alongside Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen to win the award again in 2022. However, there's another quarterback a little further down the list who might be worthy of an investment.
In his rookie season, Justin Herbert rewrote the rookie quarterback record books. He finished 2020 as the all-time rookie leader in passing touchdowns, total touchdowns and completions. He also had the most games with 300-plus passing yards and 3-plus touchdown passes of any rookie ever in a single season. He won the offensive rookie of the year award in a year where Justin Jefferson also shattered records.
In his second year, Herbert eclipsed 5,000 passing yards. He finished second in the league in passing yards and third in passing touchdowns.
No quarterback has ever had a better first two seasons in the league. His 9,350 passing yards, 69 passing touchdowns, 839 completions and 17 games with 300-plus passing yards are all records for a signal caller during their first two seasons. Not even Patrick Mahomes had a better first two years.
Is Justin Herbert a good bet to win NFL MVP in 2022? (Chris Unger/Getty Images)
Herbert also passes the eye-test. His 6-foot-6, 240 pound size gives him more than ideal measurables for an NFL quarterback. He's also mobile, as shown by his 536 rushing yards and 8 rushing touchdowns over his first two seasons. There's not a throw on the field he can't make and he has a bazooka attached to his right shoulder. It was easy to see right from the beginning that Herbert had the goods.
Young quarterbacks usually continue to get better over the first few years of their career. They learn the league and different coverages and situations they need to deal with. They physically mature as well. They learn what works and what doesn't work. Herbert was already one of the top quarterbacks in football over his first two years, so if he continues to improve, an MVP award certainly isn't out of the question. Herbert is currently 14-to-1 to win the award in 2022.
Story continues
While Herbert has been tremendous in his first two seasons, that hasn't exactly resulted in wins for the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers have gone 16-17 over the last two seasons, missing the playoffs in both years.
Obviously, very little of that blame actually goes to Herbert. If you remember, the Chargers and Raiders played a win-and-in game in Week 18 of this past season. In that game, Herbert erased a 15-point Chargers' deficit in the final five minutes in order to force overtime. Over those two drives, Herbert picked up many key conversions on third and fourth down. The first touchdown was on a 4th-and-21 play while the second touchdown was on the final play of the game.
However, things are expected to improve in Los Angeles this season. Their preseason win total is set at 10.5 wins. The oddsmakers also have them as -150 favorites to make the playoffs in the loaded AFC. The team added Khalil Mack, J.C. Jackson and Sebastian Joseph-Day this offseason to bolster their defense. They have the 17th overall pick in the upcoming draft to bolster their roster even further.
On offense, the Chargers have elite weapons in Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler and Mike Williams. Josh Palmer showed flashes in his rookie season. The team also signed Gerald Everett, a good pass-catching tight end. Los Angeles had a top-10 offensive line in 2021, according to PFF.
Herbert was already a top quarterback last year in most categories. If the Chargers improve on the field and win more games, that will only help the narrative around Herbert. A young, already top-level quarterback in a big market on a team that's expected to be much improved is not a bad bet for MVP.
A quarterback has won MVP in nine straight seasons and 14 of the last 15 years. Therefore, it should be no surprise that the eight players with the best MVP odds for 2022 are quarterbacks. Here's the rest of the current MVP leaderboard at BetMGM:

The Growing Religious Fervor in the American Right: ‘This Is a Jesus Movement’ – The New York Times

At the revival, as worship music played gently, Mr. Frederickson, in a cardigan and cuffed skinny jeans, urged the crowd to not believe the lie of the separation of church and state.
Among the speakers was Heidi St. John, a home-schooling advocate running for Congress in Washington State. She praised Moses mother she did not comply! and exhorted people to leave their churches if their pastors were too politically timid.
Mr. Ahn, the pastor, who also spoke at the event, said he did not see it simply as a worship service or a political rally. It is both, he said. My understanding of Jesus kingdom is that he is Lord, not just over the church, but every aspect of society. That means family, education, arts, entertainment, business for sure, and government.
Worship is increasingly becoming a central feature of right-wing events not aimed at exclusively Christian audiences.
ReAwaken America events, hosted by an Oklahoma talk-show personality and entrepreneur, are touted as gatherings of truth-seekers who oppose pandemic precautions, believe that the 2020 election was stolen, distrust Black Lives Matter and want to explore what really happened on Jan. 6. Most of the events are hosted by large churches, and the primary sponsor is Charisma News, a media outlet serving charismatic Christians.
In February, a ReAwaken event at Trinity Gospel Temple in Canton, Ohio, opened with a set of worship music from Melody Noel Altavilla, a songwriter and worship leader at Influence Church in Anaheim, Calif. Your presence fills the temple when we worship you, Ms. Altavilla sang. The music soared in the darkened sanctuary.
In an interview, Ms. Altavilla said she was excited to be asked to perform because it was a chance to create space for God at a secular event.

SOUTH BEND Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand is back in South Bend for a second stint after leading the group from 2012 to 2017 with the Fighting Irish.
After a brief stay in the NFL with the Chicago Bears and some time off in between, hes back to coach an offensive line that got a lot better as the 2021 season went on.
Minus former graduate senior Cain Madden, everyone returns this season to man the line of an offense that will start a more inexperienced quarterback in either junior Drew Pyne or sophomore Tyler Buchner.
So far this spring, with all the experienced pieces connected within the trenches, things have been clicking as Hiestand continues to build relationships with his players.
Right now, I feel good about the way theyve approached the practices, Hiestand said. Just with their attitude and the way they come in willing to learn. Those are some of the things that were very important to us to get that going properly.
With a majority of the starters last season back, Hiestands been able to lean on some of the older guys to help transition into his new role with the Irish more smoothly.
Two of those returners are now graduate seniors in Jarrett Patterson and Josh Lugg. Both guys have battled injuries including now with Patterson sidelined after a torn pectoral injury this spring but will continue to be valuable assets on or off the field as the fall approaches.
Its always helpful when you get into the tough situations that you know are coming, said Hiestand of having an experienced offensive line room. You have to have people that bring out the best in everyone, and its nice to have guys that have been there and have experience and realize that its always just one play. Players like that dont let bad things bleed into other plays. They stay focused, and its hard to do unless youve been there.
Numbers have been lower than normal due to a number of injuries Patterson, sophomore Pat Coogan and freshman Joey Tanona have all missed time this spring but thats opened increased roles for players at multiple positions along the line.
With Patterson out, both junior Michael Cormady and senior Zeke Correll have split time in the middle to help alleviate the loss of the veteran center.
Wherever you get more reps at is where youre going to be more comfortable, said Correll of playing center. Ive been working at center, and I feel pretty comfortable there right now.
Were growing (as a unit), and weve gotten a lot better together this spring. Theres still a lot to work on and improve on. We do everything together. We eat together, watch film together and well go get in some extra work with each other. When we walk on the field, we are shoulder to shoulder. It sounds kind of crazy, but when it comes to football, it makes everything so much easier.
After solid freshman seasons due to some trial by fire because of injuries, both tackle positions seem to be settled by sophomores Joe Alt and Blake Fisher.
Alt played a big role in shoring up an unproven offensive line early last season, while Fisher showed impressive tools in spurts while also dealing with a knee injury that kept him sidelined for much of the season.
Fishers back to full health now and has looked every bit of imposing with his 6-foot-6, 335-pound frame.
You can see that theres a very talented player there, Hiestand said. Hes still somebody thats learning on the job and trying to figure out how he can be the best player he can be. A lot of our talks between he and I are about working on technique. A lot of games along the offensive line are won and lost on the ability to be fundamentally sound. You want to have a consistent technique, one that will make you successful at making your blocks.
Notre Dames offensive line has solid depth when healthy and has the starting pieces to again be what those around the college football landscape expect out of an Irish o-line in 2022.
With some players currently sidelined and Hiestand and his staff still putting the pieces in place, the group still has a lot to work on before putting everything together this fall.
Were a work in progress, Hiestand said. Were slowly improving. Our expectation is that we continue doing that. Were on the right track. Ill say that.

Tesla is lovely and all, but the company cannot be accused of making EVs financially accessible. Spotify gives us some TikTok vibes today. The streaming service is on a roll with yet another new discovery feature that it is testing. We report that this time it is a personalized feed on the apps home screen, which introduces users to new music through a feed of canvas loops (aka those GIFs that appear when youre listening to certain songs Olivia Rodrigos Brutal is accompanied by loop of a cake being smashed, for example). This follows last weeks test of an audio news feed for podcasts.
Twitter, Twitter, Twitter! We know Jan would be rolling her eyes at Marcia right now for discussing the social media giant yet again this week, but there is just too much going on to not mention it. Syds Broken Hearts Club is More Than Mood Music Its a Motion Picture – Rolling Stone
Posted: at 3:51 am
The subtle crush. The reciprocity. The perfect date. The walls around your heart slowly receding. The full on infatuation. The carnal connection. The imperfection. The dark descent. The ultimatum. The separation. The devastation. The peace. Syd, the impossibly cool writer, producer, and frontwoman of the beloved alt-R&B band The Internet, masterfully dictates the evolution of a failed coupling on Broken Hearts Club, her second solo endeavor. Syds sound is often atmospheric, and she knows it. I think a lot of people would agree that my voice and my music share a similar energy of Sunday cleaning music, or Lets light the incense and candles and have some wine music, she told Rolling Stone. It just kind of fits a certain mood. In turn, Broken Hearts Club is magnificently scored and could fill a room of romantic company with swirling ambiance. Yet, it is also expertly sequenced, as good of a story as it is a backdrop.
Around the start of the pandemic, Syd found herself with an album full of sanguine love songs that no longer resonated with her. A searing split with a long-term partner in a world of isolation pushed her to add more to the project that reflected the relationships end. She could have just as easily started over, reverted back to the more hedonist tone of her 2017 debut Fin, or made a project more fitting of the name Broken Hearts Club. Surprisingly, most of the album she settled on doesnt languish in heartbreak. Instead, it delights in the splendor of new love, even if it does so apprehensively. The Smino-assisted single Right Track is rejuvenating and upbeat, with a jolting guitar riff and a warm sense of relief. Dont you love it when things go right? Syd sings airily.
By the albums center, its protagonist has gone from cautiously falling in love to full-on plummeting. Rodney Darkchild Jerkins, famed collaborator to Syds R&B foremothers Brandy, Monica, and Mariah Carey, among many more, produced and co-wrote Control with Syd; its where her craven adulation is made clear. You kiss my neck, I melt away, she says over frenetic percussive flourishes that sound like theyre nearly tripping over themselves. Control is immediately reminiscent of Aaliyahs One in a Million, now a familiar sonic touchstone after being resuscitated by acts like Tink and Normani. The production on Broken Hearts Club dances through more decades, from the splashes of reverberated drums on CYBAH, to the passionate electric guitar solo on Fast Car to the modern 808s on Tie the Knot. Syds careful manipulation of musical eras emphasizes the timeless love story she weaves.
Syd is formally inducted into the albums titular club with the help of Internet bandmate Steve Lacy, who produced the downcast BMHWDY, a song where Syd sings of familiar romantic decimation: I deleted all your pictures/You wanna stay friends and thats big a ya/But girl I cant get witcha. Its the creeping complications before this point in songs like Out Loud where she pines for public affection, or Heartfelt Freestyle where Syd craves reassurance over a jazzy sample of Kruangbins White Glove that feel the most relatable. Meaningful relationships dont just fall apart. They erode. Guided by Syds laudable ear and angelic voice, Broken Hearts Club succeeds in sewing a narrative of love grown and wilted.

Man indicted in $500K bitcoin theft has ties to professional poker world – KLAS – 8 News Now
Posted: at 3:50 am
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A grand jury has indicted a 23-year-old man jailed on charges of theft in a bitcoin scheme.
Filippos Liakounakos was arrested on March 28 and charged with theft, identity theft and a felony act involving email/electronic transactions of computer data. His jail records at Clark County Detention Center indicate his bail is a total of $250,000.
Liakounakos is accused of stealing a $500,000 from a novice cryptocurrency trader in late 2020.
A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department warrant, describing the investigation, indicates police identified Liakounakos as a suspect when he made contact with the victim after the initial theft, possibly to set up another transaction.
Since his arrest, Liakounakos has been the subject of discussion on several professional poker websites. Posts on the sites indicate Liakounakos is known in the poker world, but hasnt had any significant wins to his name. He has reportedly competed in a World Series of Poker event.
Other reports indicate he was involved in a dispute with another poker player that ended in Liakounakos paying the player to resolve the conflict.
His defense attorney, Josh Tomsheck, did not return a call requesting comment Thursday.
Liakounakos is scheduled to appear in court on April 13.

Best US Online Poker Sites: Detailed Guide to Legal Online Poker in the US – Pokerfuse
Posted: at 3:50 am
Are you a US online poker player looking to play your favorite game on the virtual felt? You have come to the right place as we offer you a complete overview of the online poker industry in the US and all the legal poker sites and apps where you can play best online poker games.
Online poker has been in the US since its very inception, but in 2011 all the major operators were banned from the country for failing to respect the ambiguous laws and regulations in place at the time. It took a while, but in 2013 the first 100% legal and regulated online poker sites launched in Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey.
Today, regulated US online poker sites are available in several states.
In this guide to online poker in the US, we bring you a full list of states in which you can play online poker, the operators which you may have access to, and everything else you need to jump right into the action.
Keep reading to find your way to the best online poker sites in your state where you can feel safe playing poker for the first time since the Black Friday.
Online poker is booming in the US, with new operators entering the market every year. Here is the list of the online poker operators that currently offer legal online poker within US:
Poker players in the US are presented with many options to play the game online, with both legal and illegal offshore sites offering their services. Of course, we always recommend playing at a regulated poker site for many different reasons.
Here are the main things you should look at when picking the online poker site to play at:
Are you interested in playing online poker in the US and are looking to set up your first account? Here are the general steps you will need to follow to get started as an online poker player in the US.
With so many different operators out there, and many advertising to be the best US poker site, how can you actually be sure which sites are regulated and which are not? Here are a few things to look out for in your pursuit of a legal place to play online poker:
Since online poker sites are still so few and only available in a few states, you may be wondering why you should go through the trouble of finding one. After all, you have heard of people playing at offshore sites and having a decent enough experience. However, there are clear advantages to playing at regulated poker sites, and here are a few of them:
Regulated US online poker sites offer some of the biggest and most lucrative bonus offers and promotions in the world. As the sites compete for traffic and new players, welcome bonuses have never been juicier and players can benefit from a host of valuable promotions and reload bonuses as well.
The first thing to welcome players at practically every regulated US poker site is a welcome bonus. Often worth as much as a $1,000, welcome bonuses are a great way to start building an online poker bankroll in the US.
Online poker bonuses are generally issued to players as a form of rakeback, which means you will have to play real money games to get your hands on the bonus. As you play real money poker and accumulate loyalty points, your bonus will be released in increments of 5%, 10%, or more. In either case, expect a high return on any rake paid while your welcome bonus is active.
While getting a welcome bonus when you make your first deposit is a common practice around the world, no deposit bonuses have been less common outside of the US lately. At US poker sites, however, you can get some free cash or tournament tickets at most sites just for signing up.
These no deposit bonuses are given to every player who signs up as a chance to try playing real money poker without any real risk and a great opportunity to explore the site. If you live in a state where online poker is legal, you should look into the no deposit offers that are available.
Another great way to benefit from playing real money online poker in the US is through the various loyalty schemes and programs that the operators have in store for you. Loyalty points are awarded based on how much you play and the rake you pay, and they can be converted into cash, bonuses, and other real rewards.
Make sure you understand the loyalty scheme of the site you plan on playing at before you commit any significant funds to it. After all, the difference between a good loyalty program and a poor one can be a very big factor in your bottom line.
Live poker is available across the country and no matter where you live there is likely a live poker room close to you. Now that online poker is also becoming more widely available, lets weigh the pros and cons of playing at online poker sites and figure out what advantages you may get from playing online poker.
The history of online poker in the US is as long as the history of online poker worldwide as some of the first operators launched in the US at their inception. Here is how we got from there to here in a few simple footnotes.
The one thing US players have been dreaming off since 2011 is a shared liquidity pool in which they could play poker against other players from all over the US.
Recently, the DoJ decided it would not appeal the Supreme Court decision which stated the Wire Act only applies to sports betting, which now opens the door for online poker sites to share their liquidity between different states.
With many sites already operating in multiple states, it is only a question of time before the likes of PokerStars, WSOP.com, and partypoker will start sharing liquidity between their various sites.
With interstate poker finally looking likely to become a reality in the near future, the months and years ahead should be very exciting for all US players who have been waiting to experience the full scope of online poker they were used to in the pre-Black Friday era.
Yes, online poker has been legal in the US for almost a decade now. However, the game is not regulated on the federal level. States have the right to pass their own online poker laws and so far, only a handful of states have regulated online poker in the US, namely Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and West Virginia.
You can sign up with any US poker site by visiting the operators page and filling in the required details to open your account. While its possible to sign up from pretty much anywhere in the US, you should keep in mind that you will only be allowed to play for real money while physically present in the state where the particular room is regulated. So, for example, you can only play on PokerStars PA while in Pennsylvania.
Every state has a body in charge of licensing and regulating poker sites and other forms of online gambling. US online poker sites are regulated on the state level and there is no overarching federal body that would oversee their operations.
The best way to know if an online poker site is legal in the US is by checking out their licensing information. This info is available on the page, usually in the footer, and it clearly indicates what organization is in charge of licensing and regulation. In New Jersey, for example, this would be the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE).
On top of this, regulated US sites are owned by well-known companies and do not cater to players from the entire country but rather from the individual state where the operator is licensed. Licensed US poker sites also do not accept bitcoins.
There are several major operators present in regulated US online poker markets in the country, including PokerStars, WSOP.com, BetMGM, Borgata, and partypoker. Not all of them are available across all regulated states, but you can rest assured these are your best and safest picks.

PokerStars Heads Back to Bahamas for PCA and PSPC in January 2023 – PokerNews.com
Posted: at 3:50 am
PokerStars has officially been confirmed that the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) will go ahead in January 2023, three years on from the last edition.
The announcement also confirmed the return of the second ever PokerStars Players No-Limit Holdem Championship (PSPC), which runs alongside the PCA. The buy-in for the PSPC will be $25,000, mirroring that of the first instalment.
The dates for the PSPC have officially been set in stone following the 2020 PSPC cancellation and postponement beyond 2021. The PCA runs from January 22February 3, 2023, with the PSPC taking place from January 30February 3.
We have missed our live events as much as our players, so it is our true pleasure to announce the PokerStars Players Championship will take place at Baha Mar in January," said Severin Rasset, Managing Director & Commercial Officer, PokerStars. "Beautiful location, hundreds of qualifiers, with millions to win. If there is one tournament to choose for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it will be the PSPC.
"We will provide more details soon on how to get your hands on a Platinum Pass - stay tuned!
In September 2019, it was reported that the PCA had been discontinued but the event is back on the poker calendar with the PCA heading to the brand new Baha Mar Hotel and Resort, Nassau from January 22February 3, 2023.
The resort promises the finest hotel accommodation and is packed out with numerous bars and fine-dining restaurants. Guests can also take a break away from the tables and soak up the gorgeous Caribbean sun at the complex's water park.
While the schedule for the PCA is not finalized, the PCA Main Event buy-in will be $10,300. Those with more modest bankrolls can still be part of the experience as numerous events for just a few hundred dollars grace the schedule, while nose-bleed stakes aficionados will be able to dive into the various High and Super High Rollers.

Chino Rheem was the last player to etch his name on the PCA Main Event trophy. He put on a dominant display throughout the event and beat Daniel Strelitz to seal the victory.
The event attracted 865 total entries, which generated a prize pool of $8,390,500. Rheem, of course, took home the lion's share and added $1,567,100 to his live earnings total following the triumph.
Scott Wellenbach helped produce one of the more heartwarming stories to come from the 2019 PCA. The poker philanthropist, who qualified for the Main Event for just $500, promised to donate all his winnings to charity.
The Canadian would go on to make a deep run, finishing in third place for $671,000. This meant over $600,000 went to good causes. You can learn more about Wellenbach and his incredible story by clicking here.
Also announced was the return of the PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC), which will round out the PCA festival from January 30February 3, 2023.
First held in 2019 during the PCA Festival, the PSPC was a unique event, combining Platinum Pass qualifiers and satellite winners with $25,000 high roller regulars. The event was won by PokerStars Ambassador Ramon Colillas, winning a staggering $5.1 million for his efforts.
After the success of the 2019 event, the PSPC was due to return to the poker calendar the following year in Barcelona, but was postponed until 2021 and seemingly cancelled altogether in the spring of 2021.
At the time, PokerStars Managing Director & Commercial Officer Severin Rasset reiterated his commitment to the tournament, saying that the PSPC would return "as soon as the situation allows". As we now know, that will be in January 2023.
All signs point towards the event in 2023 being even bigger than the first, with plenty of Platinum Passes still burning a hole in the pockets of those who received one for the 2020 event.
Each Platinum Pass package is worth $30,000 and along with the $25,000 buy-in, it has a host of other perks. Up to 400 Platinum Pass winners will play the event, so be sure to keep up to date with how you can get yours.
A 2023 Platinum Pass includes:
One player who has already booked his place at the PSPC is Greg "Fossilman" Raymer. The 2004 WSOP Main Event Champion rode to victory at the Cardplayer Lifestyle Mixed Game Festival to get the coveted package.
Scott Baumstein, who finished fourth in the 2019 PSPC, will also be flying to the Bahamas after he captured his Platinum Pass at the Moneymaker's Road to PSPC 2020 Seminole Hard Rock.
Several more players have already secured their seats, so be sure to check out who else will be there. All the Road to PSPC 2020 champions should qualify for 2023.
PokerStars players can get their hands on a Platinum Pass in the ongoing The EasterWithAces series which runs until April 17.

Poker Party Grand National Odds & Betting Profile – HorseRacing.net
Posted: at 3:50 am
Henry De Bromhead's Poker Party has snuck in at the bottom of the weights for the 2022 Grand National and the former Kerry National winner could be a lively each-way contender for the April 9 showpiece at Aintree...
Age: 10
Trainer: Henry De Bromhead
Chase Runs:14
Chase Wins:3
Notable Race Wins: 2019 Kerry National
A regular in top notch staying handicap chases over the last couple of years, Henry De Bromhead's Poker Party landed his first big pot in the 2019 Kerry National at Listowel, where he beat Ravenhill by a head. He's only been seen on a racecourse five times since, but he has failed to get his head in front, so will be looking to return to winning ways at Aintree.
Fourth in the Paddy Power Chase off a mark of 146 in 2019, he was then off the track for over 600 days following a third placed finish at Leopardstown in March 2020. Down the field on his comeback run in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown, the ten-year-old then had a spin over hurdles before he headed to the Cheltenham Festival last month.
Sent off an unfancied 33/1 shot for the Cross Country Chase, Poker Party was no match for the winner Delta Work and he was pulled up during that event, so he heads to Aintree looking to recapture his form from a few years ago.
Still 7lbs higher in the handicap from his Kerry National winner, Poker Party looks to face a huge task to land any sort of blow in the Merseyside showpiece, despite having a featherweight on his back.
