Column: From LAUSD student all the way to JPL and to Mars – Los Angeles Times

You may have seen the story about the Psyche mission, in which NASA is preparing to launch a spacecraft that will travel to an asteroid in search of information that might unlock some of the mysteries of the universe.
But Im going to tell you the story of a different journey. Its about how Luis Dominguez, the son of immigrants from Mexico and Honduras, traveled from South Los Angeles to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he helped build the Psyche spacecraft.
Dominguez, 34, is the eldest of three boys born to Luis and Cecilia Dominguez. His dad is an auto mechanic, and Luis tagged along to his dads shop when he could, pitching in at times. His mom was a housekeeper for a while, and as a boy, Dominguez went on jobs with her, too.
Luis Dominguez is staying at his familys home in Los Angeles before relocating to Florida in the summer for the launch of the spacecraft.
(Irfan Khan / Los Angeles Times)
His education began at Vermont Elementary in L.A. Unified, followed by Audubon Middle School, where, by his account, he wasnt the best student in the building. But when a seventh-grade classmate brought a book to class about flight, he knew what he wanted to do with his life.
I was fascinated, and I said, OK, I want to work on airplanes, Dominguez said. He went on to Westchester High School, which had an aerospace magnet.
Dominguez told me he was up at 5 in the morning, and the bus ride to school took about an hour. Knowing what he wanted to do with his life made him more focused, and his GPA shot up like a missile. On a campus career day, a visiting Cal State professor advised him to consider majoring in mechanical engineering in college rather than aerospace, because it would give him more work options.
Luis walked in the door and it was like, Hey, what can I do? Hey, let me help you with that.
David Gruel, JPL Engineer
And so he did at Cal Poly Pomona. Dominguez lived at home to save money. He commuted to college daily, put in some hours at a convenience store and a sandwich shop in his spare time, also worked as a gardener and helped out at his dads auto shop in Inglewood.
In my junior year we had a career fair and JPL was there, and honestly, I didnt even know what JPL was. I was just giving my resume to everybody, said Dominguez, who had a 3.98 GPA at the time, and was shopping for an internship. I got a call back pretty quickly and was like, whos JPL? I looked it up on the internet and thought, oh, thats the NASA space center. This is pretty cool.
In the fall of 2007, Dominguez was assigned as a part-time student intern to JPL engineer David Gruel, who led the team assembling the Mars Science Laboratory for the Curiosity mission. A lot of student interns are passive or introverted, Gruel said. Not Dominguez.

(Robert Gauthier / Los Angeles Times)
Luis walked in the door and it was like, Hey, what can I do? Hey, let me help you with that. You could tell he was excited to be where he was and wanted to contribute, and he was open and willing to doing whatever task we asked him to do, Gruel said. So his first JPL experience was seeing a rover being built, which was going to land on the surface of Mars.
When the internship was done, and Dominguez graduated from Cal Poly Pomona, he had his heart set on a career at JPL. He recalls telling Gruel, Just hire me. Ill mop the floors. Ill do anything.
Gruel had seen Dominguez evolve as an intern from small tasks to doing tech support for Curiosity engineers.
I could tell that Luis was going to be a catch and that JPL would definitely benefit from bringing him on as a full-time engineer, Gruel said.
Dominguez went to JPL straight out of college and has been there since. He was deputy electrical integration and test lead on the Mars Perseverance rover that launched in 2020. Hes now the lead electrical engineer on the Psyche satellite, overseeing a team of five, and hell be in Florida when Psyche launches in August from Cape Canaveral.
Dozens of engineers and support staff are on the Psyche team. Essentially, Dominguez and his crew build the electronic guts of the craft. They take components manufactured at JPL and around the world, string everything together and put it to the test.
In a nutshell, we build the spacecraft, we take it into an environment where we shake it, we bake it, and then blow a bunch of highly pressurized air at it to create the acoustic environment you get during launch, said Dominguez.
Luis Dominguez encourages students to shoot high, take risks, be unafraid to fail, and to live life with courage, curiosity, tenacity and a healthy dose of altruism.
(Irfan Khan / Los Angeles Times)
The craft will travel through space for years, scheduled to arrive at its destination an asteroid known as 16 Psyche in 2026. Asteroid mining is considered a future possibility, Dominguez said, but hes more curious about the primary aspect of the mission.
The cool thing about it is that its the biggest metallic asteroid we know about, and all data point to the fact that it is likely the core of a failed planet, said Dominguez. We can get a better understanding of what the core of Earth might look like, which is something weve never been able to do.
At JPL on Monday, Dominguez and others were putting the finishing touches on the spacecraft. At media day, I bumped into Brian Bone, manager of the assembly, test and launch operations unit.
Luis has been a key player, Bone said. Ive seen few people put in as much work whether you ask them to or not. Hes just all in, and hes always excited to be here.
Dominguez who is engaged to a woman he met years ago when they both worked at a McDonalds will soon move with the JPL team to Florida for the summer. He gave up the lease on his downtown L.A. apartment and moved temporarily into the brown stucco home where he spent much of his youth, in the neighborhood southwest of USC.
When I visited him there, his parents were away, visiting family in Mexico and Honduras, but I got to speak to them by phone.
He was always a smart kid, and he worked hard, said his mother, Cecilia.
I never had a doubt that he was going to make it, said his father, whos proud of all three sons. One of Luis younger brothers is a physician assistant, and the other is a legal assistant intent on becoming a lawyer.
Dominguez told me that during his time at JPL, hes developed another passion.
One of the things that most excites me is the opportunity to do community outreach and talk to kids about the stuff I do especially kids who come from where I came from, he said.
Last fall, Dominguez was the featured motivational speaker in an address broadcast to students, faculty and staff in the Cal State system. The Cal Poly alum told his story from the chancellors office in Long Beach, noting the focus it took for him to become a better student in high school. He credited his parents with showing him the value of sacrifice and hard work.
I never thought Id help put two 1-ton robots and a helicopter on Mars, he told his audience, calling himself a first-generation college student and a proud child of immigrants.
His advice to every student was to shoot high, take risks, be unafraid to fail, and to live life with courage, curiosity, tenacity and a healthy dose of altruism, because those are the tenets that got me where I am today.
Dominguez named in 2017 by CNET en Espaol as one of the 20 most influential Latinos in technology closed with this:
Just like the universe, every human being is filled with infinite capabilities and infinite possibilities, with genius, no matter their background, no matter their ZIP Code, no matter their financial circumstance. It is incumbent upon us as leaders to find that genius, to stoke it and let it shine, because at the end of the day, genius is everywhere.

Deliver Us Mars devs on going the extra mile to create a credible alien world – Gamesradar
Posted: at 1:06 pm
Deliver Us Mars looks bleak. It looks daunting. In the most desperate, isolating and life-threatening sense, it looks terrifying. And these are just some of the compliments I could pay KeokeN Interactive and Frontier Foundry's upcoming sci-fi puzzle adventure at first glance.
That early glimpse of the developer's follow-up to Deliver Us the Moon came during last month's Future Games Show Spring Showcase, when a super moody reveal trailer set the tone. Speaking to GamesRadar+ in the wake of that world premiere, KeokeN's Koen Deetman said we should expect a similarly non-violent, story-driven odyssey this time set on the Red Planet but one that is a "radical step up in narrative and gameplay" terms over its 2018 forerunner.
As is alluded to towards the end of the above trailer, exploration underpins Deliver Us Mars, with the player having crash-landed on the as-yet uncolonized foreign planet. Environmental hazards punctuate the road to safety, which allow for puzzles that are "woven into the game's setting", and merged with action-adventure set-pieces, each of which demands quick-thinking and even faster reaction times.
"Expanding on the narrative in Deliver Us Mars means that we really went the extra mile in getting actual live performances captured, not only voice but body and face, too," explains Deetman. "It deepens the believability of the characters you'll encounter in the game and this story is brought to life by a fantastic cast, who well be able to reveal and discuss at a later date."
"In the Deliver Us series, you don't commit any violent acts, so crafting a natural pressure/conflict resolve method wasn't easy for us. With the climbing ability weve added to this game, players will experience this type of 'hold on or fall' feel of danger plus it enhances the feeling of verticality in our game without us needing to use stairs or elevators."
"Compared to the previous game, the puzzles in Deliver Us Mars have evolved from one-offs to a more elevated connected system with mechanics that give you more engaging and challenging scenarios than before. Sometimes, too, these puzzles have more than just one solution."
Building on the real-world questions posed by its predecessor tied to climate change and preserving planet Earth Deliver Us Mars is set 10 years into the future. And while the climax of Deliver Us the Moon provided a temporary solution to the world's self-destructive ills, Deliver Us Mars aims to offer hope with its learn-by-doing approach and design. In doing so, Deliver Us Mars will adopt a strictly third-person perspective a distinguished step away from its forerunner's variety of fixed and tracking camera shots.
On this, Deetman says: "Both perspectives have their positives and negatives, but the third-person perspective gives the player the ability to see their astronaut in their full glory. Driving an expensive car is nice, but actually seeing it from the outside is where the real magic comes from, right? It's similar when you see our protagonist in her slick high-tech futuristic astronaut suit it's the Ferrari of our game, so to speak."
"Theres another reason we like this perspective, though: in Deliver Us The Moon, there was a sense that this silent astronaut could've been you as a player that is, until late in the game when we finally revealed who the astronaut in the suit was. You could imagine a wholly first-person perspective working well for a completely anonymous main character, but the identity of who youre playing as is important in this series. Players will be very clear from the start of Deliver Us Mars of who their protagonist is, and therefore playing as her from a third-person perspective makes more sense especially when elements like motion-capture come into play."
"Compared to our previous game, the puzzles here have evolved from one-offs to a more elevated connected system with mechanics that give you more engaging and challenging scenarios."
To its credit, the Deliver Us Mars reveal trailer is as atmospheric as they come but we're nevertheless left with more questions than answers. What caused our crash landing? Can our malfunctioning ship be repaired? What is that ominous monolith in the distance? And is that red-handled pick-axe from B&Q or Homebase? Deliver Us Mars is as yet without a concrete release window, but Deetman assures us all will be revealed in due course, and that everything the game proposes with regards to life on the barren Mars sprawl has been researched to the fullest possible degree.
"Youve no doubt noticed that humanity hasnt colonized Mars yet, so we have to make do with what the various Mars rovers and scientists are showing to the world when we try to stick to an authentic representation of this planet. We use that as a basis for our starting point," Deetman adds. "With Deliver Us The Moon, we had astronauts confirm some of the ways the game depicted its real-life setting. Thats obviously not possible to do with Mars, but we studied the behavior of its atmosphere, how the color of the landscape changes through the night, and how its gravity behaves in comparison to Earth and the Moon. This natural character of the planet was important for us to capture."
"Another question we asked was, how would human beings actually colonize a planet like this? Throughout the development of Deliver Us Mars, weve learned a lot about how challenging this would actually be, and it underlined to us just how precious planet Earth really is."
Other, less conceptual challenges faced by KeokeN pertain to new-gen hardware. Having first launched on PC in 2018, Deliver Us the Moon was re-released on desktops the following year, before debuting on PS4 and Xbox One in 2020. Now, two years on, Deliver Us the Moon is preparing for a PS5 and Xbox Series X launch on May 19 a process that Deetman believes has helped both the developer's first game and its forthcoming sequel. From 4K visuals to feeling genuine vertigo from peering over one of the Red Planet's knife-edge gullies, it sounds like Deliver Us Mars is shaping up nicely in its current state. Deetman can't say much more than that currently, but he does promise the wait will be worth it.
He adds: "We've been really fortunate to have had the next-gen hardware at our disposal for Deliver Us The Moon while also developing Deliver Us Mars. It has absolutely benefitted from the knowledge we've acquired getting our previous game to next gen. I've seen players ask what that 'next-gen feeling' is, but I can assure you Deliver Us Mars will bring players that sensation this game really looks and sounds the part."

With the aim of further expanding its business, the group chaired by Gildo Pastor is setting off in a new direction by extending its expertise to the challenges of space.
Build a rover to transport astronauts over very rugged terrain where temperatures drop to -160C
Along with Dr. Antonio Delfino, former head of the chemistry and physics department and Fellow at Michelin, Gildo Pastor has co-founded Venturi Lab, an entity that invents and designs mobility solutions capable of coping with the extreme conditions that can be found on the Moon and Mars.
Venturi Lab is working closely with Venturi in Monaco and Venturi North America in Columbus (Ohio, USA) to develop the required technology. But also with a 100% American-owned company, based in California: Venturi Astrolab.
Its main objective is the construction of a rover for SpaceX and NASAs upcoming lunar missions. With the support of Venturi Monaco and Venturi North America, Venturi Astrolab hopes to supply NASA with its vehicles in the future.
Discussions with Gildo Pastor on the possibility of sending a multifunctional electric rover to the Moon and then to Mars began in 2018, Antonio Delfino reveals. Thanks to teams from Venturi in Monaco and Venturi Astrolab in Los Angeles, we will study, develop and build a rover to transport astronauts on very rugged terrain, where the temperature is -160C.
I want to raise the Monegasque flag even higher
Further down the line, Venturi Lab also intends to develop technologies that will reduce land, sea and air pollution.

Traditional Mars procession held in Dhaka on Bengali new year – India Today

Mars procession in Dhaka on Bengali new year (Photo: India Today)
The traditional Mars procession of the Bengali New Year 1429 has been held in Dhaka under the slogan 'Nirmal Karo Mangal Ke Malin Marm Mushaye'. The procession was filled with people of different classes and professions dressed in Baishakhi, holding colourful masks in their hands.
The people gathered in the procession sang - 'Purify, do good and wipe away the filthy heart'.
The new year celebrations in 2020 were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and the Mars procession did not take place. In 2021, despite an improvement in the situation, there was no opportunity for everyone to participate. The restrictions have been lifted this year after the decrease in the spread of the virus.
The Mars procession organised by Dhaka university on the first Baishakh has been a part of the new year celebrations in the city for a long time. The program is also seen as a tool in the fight against bigotry.
The procession was started in the 1980s by the faculty of the fine arts department of Dhaka university on the first Baishakh with the call to break the shackles of military rule. The procession was later named 'Mars procession'. The program was recognized as a cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2016.

The big business of sports gambling is Indeed taking over TV and social media ad game – WKAR
Posted: at 1:05 pm
They are embedded in Twitter feeds, between Snapchat stories, sharing a television screen while Cade Cunningham attempts a free-throw. Advertisements for sports gambling companies are saturated throughout the media.
Advertising for companies like FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM is still in its infancy despite the prevalence of these ads. Local TV advertising spots cost sports gambling companies $10.7 million in the United States in the beginning of 2019. This has risen to $154 million in 2021 and is expected to surpass $550 million by 2024.
Dr. Teresa Mastin is a professor and chairperson in Michigan States Department of Advertising and Public Relations. She said that it is important to view ads of gambling companies in the same context of ads for tobacco or alcohol. Addiction is a major component for the consumers of these products. Gambling is no different.
What they are focusing on is the exciting parts, said Mastin. The people who have an issue with addiction are the ones who are most likely to see these ads and the ones who will struggle the most.
Although Mastin said there are obvious flaws in this practice of focusing on the highlights of gambling, she doesnt foresee much changing in the future for gambling advertisements.
There is a lot of money to be made so that means it is unlikely that there will be changes anytime soon, she said. It is important for young people to understand that what they are seeing. We need to help people contextualize what the advertisement is really for and make sure they know that the odds are not in their favor.
Julio Garza is part of the demographic that sports gambling companies are trying to reach with their advertisements. Garza is 21, and a senior at Eastern Michigan University.
I do believe that I am a part of the target audience for these advertisements because of the combination of how often I see these advertisements on social media, how often I sports bet, and I know so many people my age that do sports bet, said Garza.
Garza said he noticed a recent ad for MGM Casino and Sportsbook while he was viewing his friends Snapchat stories.
The first thing that came to mind about this ad was the extremely large font saying NEW USERS SPECIAL OFFER. Also, another thing that I noticed was Jamie Foxx was endorsing the ad. It seems most casinos and sportsbooks have a celebrity endorser that they use to promote new users to sign up and receive some type of risk-free bet or an incentive for free play bonus money, he said.
BMC Public Health conducted a study from 2015-2020 on the rapid emergence of gambling advertising. The study focused on the content, delivery and structural features incorporated within emerging gambling advertising.
The study concluded that as sports gambling becomes legal in more and more states, the intensity of the advertising increases. This results in more advertisements that are interactive than most other forms of advertising. Promotional content is incorporated into the ads and presented directly to the viewer. Garza notices these ads regularly and they tend to be very enticing to him.
I feel that when I get the promotions in my email or see it on social media that it's a too good to be true type of feeling and I don't want to miss out on what I could win, Garza said.
Taliah Martinez is a junior at Michigan State studying creative advertising. She likened ads for sports gambling companies to more interactive versions of most tobacco and alcohol ads. Martinez said that when she notices these ads, they remind her of less annoying pop-up ads because of the mediums they are shown on.
If Martinez were to change something about how sports gambling ads work, it would be to make them more self explanatory. She says that she notices these ads and notices that they can be enticing. However, because she is not very familiar with sports betting, Martinez is not inclined to click on these ads.
Gambling ads are a new frontier. Advertisers will adapt as sports gambling continues to become legalized in more states. Currently, the top gambling companies are the ones pumping out most of the ads by a wide margin. For example, the top five gambling companies run 90% of the gambling ads in Michigan.
These figures will change drastically as the gambling industry continues to grow. These companies are taking advantage of this ripe situation in ways that are similar to other markets like alcohol and tobacco.

Gambling firms in Great Britain to face tougher rules on preventing harm – The Guardian
Posted: at 1:05 pm
The Gambling Commission is to lay down tougher rules for the industry in Great Britain after becoming exasperated by the ongoing failure of online casinos and bookmakers to protect vulnerable people and addicts.
In a major shift in emphasis, the regulator will start giving operators direct instructions on how to ensure tconsumers are not harmed, taking a prescriptive approach, instead of leaving it up to them to decide how to do so.
The Gambling Commission chief executive, Andrew Rhodes, said the regulator had been forced to act because firms were not doing enough, despite the imminent threat of a government review of gambling laws that could lead to stricter regulation.
William Hill recently revealed it had set aside 15m to cover potential costs arising from a review of its licence by the Gambling Commission. If the regulator were to fine the bookmaker that much, it would be the highest penalty ever levied against a British operator.
Online casino 888, which is in the process of buying William Hill, was fined 9.4m last month over multiple failings that led to customers racking up huge losses during the depths of the Covid pandemic.
Rhodes said the regulators more prescriptive approach would leave firms in no doubt about what they need to do to avoid facing more penalties, the volume of which has risen significantly in recent years.
Time and time again our enforcement cases show that some operators are still not doing enough to prevent gambling harm, said Rhodes.
These new rules, developed following an extensive consultation, make our expectations even more explicit.
We expect operators to identify and tackle gambling harms with fast, proportionate and effective action and we will not hesitate to take tough action on operators who fail to do so.
Under the new rules, bookies and online casinos will be required to monitor a specific range of indicators that a customer is suffering harm due to their gambling, flag worrying signs and take action quickly.
They will also have to put in place measures to stop themselves marketing bonus offers for customers deemed to be at risk of gambling disorder.
The commission will expect them to provide regular evidence of their progress. It plans to issue guidance on how to comply in June, before the rules come into effect on 12 September.
A spokesperson for the Betting and Gaming Council, the industry lobby group, said: We believe enhanced spending checks should be used online to identify those showing signs of problem gambling and to focus in on those at risk, so swift interventions can take place.
But it is essential this is targeted so we dont interfere with the personal freedoms of the vast majority of people who gamble safely and responsibly, as research shows that 90% of people do not comply with requests for information.

CAP Code: Celebrities and Gambling – Lexology
Posted: at 1:05 pm
Introduction
On 5 April, the Committee for Advertising Practice (CAP) released new rules designed to protect young people and vulnerable audiences from advertising for gambling products. Advertisers have until 1 October 2022 to comply with the change to the CAP Code (the New Rules). This timing is significant as it is during the build-up to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar an event which traditionally sees a heavy spend on marketing to attract gambling customers.
The New Rules
Currently, rule 16.3.12 prohibits an ad from being likely to be of particular appeal to children or young persons, especially by reflecting or being associated with youth culture (emphasis added). The New Rules strengthen the language used, stating an ad must not be likely to be of strong appeal to children or young persons, especially by reflecting or being associated with youth culture (emphasis added). Similar changes have been made to the Broadcast Advertising Code (BCAP Code).
The New Rules build on the existing rules surrounding the targeting and scheduling of ads and requirements that celebrities and anyone playing a significant role in a gambling ad must be 25 years old or over.
Expected Impact
The strong appeal test means that any content which has a strong appeal to under-18s is prohibited, regardless of how it is viewed by adults. Therefore, the New Rules will restrict the range of personalities gambling ads can feature. For example, sportspeople well-known to under-18s appearing in gambling-related ads would likely fall foul of the New Rules.
CAP admits that evaluating the appeal of a marketing communication can be subjective. Consequently, CAP has released guidance indicating what forms they consider strong appeal to take, including:
When applying this guidance, one might consider that the subject matter of the bet e.g. football or esports is likely to be popular with under-18s. However, the New Rules which expressly state that: Where appropriate steps have been taken to limit the potential for an advertisement to appeal strongly to under-18s, this rule does not prevent the advertising of gambling products associated with activities that are themselves of strong appeal to under-18s (for instance, certain sports or playing video games). The guidance gives some examples of what those appropriate steps might be.
A targeting exemption is also applicable if the advertiser is able to verify the age of an audience and exclude under-18s from seeing it. It is unlikely that self-verification will be sufficient to meet this requirement. For example, the ruling in LC International Ltd t/a Gala Spins held that self-reporting your age was insufficient to ensure under-18s did not see the ad, due to the risk of misreporting age.
Conclusion
Shahriar Coupal, Director of CAP, has heralded these changes as a new era for gambling ads. The New Rules could also have an impact on the sponsorship of sport by gambling companies. Whilst the ASAs remit does not extend to sponsorship itself, it does cover advertisements issued as a result of a sponsorship arrangement. If gambling operators who sponsor sports teams can no longer use imagery of players from the teams or competitions they are sponsoring for UK-facing advertising, then this could be a material factor for gambling sponsors who are seeking to appeal to UK audiences. The CAP Code does not, however, apply to advertising which is not visible in the UK.
Of course, as gambling operators and sports organisations will be aware, there remains a possibility that the ongoing Gambling Act Review could have a much broader impact on gambling advertising and on sports sponsorship in the UK than the New Rules.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a gambling problem – Deadspin

Trent Baalke may risk it all on Travon Walker.Image: Getty Images
Perhaps fittingly for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the 2022 Draft will be held amid the backdrop of casinos on the Las Vegas strip. The NFL Drafts is always a high-stakes poker table. Even with rookie wage scale contracts, drafting the wrong guy is a multi-million dollar mistake. Theres a reason why the same losing gamblers plunge into debt and disciplined gamblers typically win. Bad gamblers make more risky bets on propositions where the house has the edge.
One glorious upside to the 2022 NFL Draft lacking a premier superstar at the top pile of prospects is that we get to watch some of the NFLs worst general managers try to discern talent. Picking prospects is as much about talent evaluation as risk assessment. Jags General Manager Trent Baalke has approximately two more weeks to decide who hell select with the first overall pick.
It appears the casino energy has activated their worst inclinations and the Jaguars might be ready to risk it all on the slim odds that Georgia defensive end Travon Walker is the defensive game-changer they need. Last week, Jaguars cornerback Shaq Griffin made a persuasive case to activate the engine drive on the Travon Walker hype. Baalke may have been listening.
The presumption for weeks has been that the Jags would address their defensive line woes by drafting Michigans Aidan Hutchinson with the first pick. However, history suggests that Baalke will reach for Walker, the combine champ. In 2011, as GM of the 49ers, Baalke drafted Aldon Smith with the seventh pick, and he took DeForest Buckner seventh in 2016 after a monstrous combine. That history ignores that Aldon Smith was a proven pass rusher at Missouri while Buckner was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Whatever Baalkes instincts are telling him, he should do the opposite.
Selecting Walker No. 1 feels like Baalke putting up the Jags mortgage on a risky futures bet. What are they thinking? Sure, theres a chance Walker can prove Baalke right, but why reach so far with the first pick when there are options with better odds available? Only nine Jacksonville first-rounders have made it to a second contract with the Jaguars, and the last player to re-up was Blake Bortles.
Last April, Baalke selected Trevor Lawrence with one of the easiest first overall picks in recent memory, then followed that by making the inexplicable decision to draft his Clemson teammate Travis Etienne with the 25th pick. Picking a first round running back is a moronic draft strategy, but even more so when you factor in the presence of 2019 undrafted free agent gem James Robinson in the backfield.
Like Jake Locker and many others before him, Walker is this years unicorn whose production pales in comparison to his exploding hype. There have been flashes, but the No.1 pick is for the cant-miss superstars. In Walkers breakout season, he totaled 37 tackles and six sacks in 15 games on national championship-winning defense. Can he be that guy on the worst team in the NFL?
Walkers chase down tackle of Alabamas Agiye Hall in the National Championship game is the clip that scouts have been salivating over. On Alabamas final possession of the first half, Bryce Young connected with Hall for a short gain. However, after Georgia cornerback Kelee Ringo whiffed on the tackle, Hall sprinted up an open lane with a blocker in front. Walker, who was near the line of scrimmage after Halls catch, raced up the field to wrap up the Tides freshman receiver and saved a touchdown. Walkers measurements of 6-foot-5, 271 pounds, coupled with a 6.89 in the 3-cone drill and a 4.51 40-yard dash, is a buffet of physical skills.
However, in three seasons, hes recorded only 9.5 sacks. Last April, Pro Football Focus rated Jacksonville the 29th worst team at drafting first round picks since 2010. In drafts like this, the mystery becomes an allure.
Baalke already made this mistake before, in 2020, when the Jags selected LSU pass rusher KLavon Chaisson. Theres a bit more leeway to miss on the 20th pick in their defense. One of the few picks Jacksonville has hit on was Jalen Ramsey, whom they traded to the Los Angeles Rams. Theres no excuse here.
In a draft where Kayvon Thibodeaux and Aidan Hutchinson are the top two pass rushers, a franchise that needs to stop the bleeding shouldnt be chasing long odds. If they want to gamble, take a shot at injured Michigan edge rusher David Ojabo in the second round.
Theres more at stake for Baalke than just the season. Baalkes reputation is in tatters right now. He overpaid a slew of veterans in free agency in the largest spending spree in league history. Reportedly, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich was interested in the Jags head coaching job if Baalke was removed from his post. His career is on the line. But Baalke has a gambling problemmetaphorically speaking. After the last decade of bad bets, doubling down and continuously swinging for the fences with these get-rich-quick gambles is the worst possible move for a franchise in search of stability.

GamCare has reported an uptick in the number of females accessing gambling support across the UK, in addition to detailed an increase in the understanding of such harms.
An evaluation report of the charitys training sessions for professionals found that 85 per cent of participants improved their understanding of gambling harms, including how to identify women in need of support.
The review, produced by inFocus Consulting, discovered that the GamCare training programme saw 97 per cent of participants understand how problem gambling impacts women they work with after receiving training.
Furthermore, it also reports that 96 per cent of professionals reported improved confidence in their ability to signpost and refer women to gambling support services.
GamCares Womens Programme, which delivered training to 918 organisation across the UK during this past year, works toward creating systemic change across policy, research and treatment to address the under-representation of women seeking support and accessing treatment, throughout England, Scotland and Wales
Dr Damian Hatton, Managing Director and Senior Evaluator at inFocus Consulting, stated: It has been a great pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of professionals, who are clearly committed to the advancement of gambling related support and services for women, which has been historically overlooked.
We are excited to see how the insights from the evaluation can be put to best use in the coming months and years.
GamCare also says that it has witnessed a six per cent increase in the number of women accessing gambling support in the UK, with the programme intending to continue building in order to increase awareness.
The initiative will also look to raise awareness among healthcare professionals, as well as looking to build stronger relationships with departments of the NHS and other healthcare service providers.
Anna Hemmings, Chief Executive of GamCare, commented: At GamCare, we know that stigma and shame are a key barrier to women disclosing concerns, either about their own gambling or someone close to them.
The Womens Programme works to reduce stigma, which affects women at risk of experiencing gambling harms, to better understand and break down the barriers they face when seeking treatment.
Over the next year, we want to continue to raise awareness of how gambling harm affects women and to signpost the gambling support services available for women.
