Try Fasting this February – The Heights – The Heights

Posted: February 7, 2022 at 6:54 am

Anyone who has ever run cross country or track will fondly remember nights before a race where they stuffed their face full of carbs in order to load up before the big race. Those same people might be surprised to hear that Ancient Greek athletes, the original Olympians, never carbo-loaded. In fact, they didnt eat at all before their races. Instead, they fasted in preparation for the Olympics and other events, citing both physical and spiritual reasons.

Fasting isnt unique to the Greeks it is a huge part of human history that has been practiced throughout centuries by most ancient civilizations and religions. While many are familiar with Lent in Christianity, Ramadan in Islam and Yom Kippur in Judaism, did you know the Native Americans also practiced fasting before embarking on spiritual vision quests? Or that in pre-Columbian Peru, fasting was a requirement for penance after an individual had confessed their sin?

Beyond purely religious reasoning, people have used fasting as medical treatment for centuries. In the fifth century B.C.E., many physicians, including Hippocrates, prescribed fasts to people exhibiting symptoms of certain illnesses. This treatment continued throughout history, well into the 19th century, but fell out of popularity in the 20th and 21st centuries. It was only recently, given the scientific and medical communities research into the practice, that it has become popular once more. Now more than ever, we have the tools to explain how and why fasting can be used as a tool to achieve better health, deal with disease and increase longevity.

Personally, fasting is something that I practice everyday as a means to better physical and mental health, as well as concentration and academic performance. I have practiced fasting on some level since I was 7 years old when my Ukrainian chess coach cautioned me against eating before a game. How can the blood go to your brain when it is busy in your stomach? she would say, before instructing me not to eat two hours prior to my matches for fear that it would ruin my concentration. I cant prove that she was exactly right (although I did go on to win quite a few games and enjoy a mildly successful childhood chess career), but I can say that she was probably onto something. The current body of scientific literature widely supports both fasting and intermittent fasting as a way to improve cognitive performance.

So what does the literature say exactly? Well, a lot. For one thing, studies have proven that intermittent fasting (IF) boosts working memory in animals and verbal memory in adult humans. Mark Mattson, a professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins, offers a potential evolutionary explanation for this. For much of history, humans had to survive and function in a food-deprived state or they werent going to be successful in finding more food.

The human species evolved experiencing long periods between kills where we had to be able to function without the consistent supply of food that we are surrounded by today, so its not entirely surprising that our brains and bodies are accustomed to this.

One clinical study even went as far as to show that one week of fasting can improve peoples sleep, concentration and emotional balance, suggesting that not only can we survive without food but perhaps even thrive in its absence. The benefits dont stop there. Fasting, both IF and alternate-day, have been linked to increased brain cell generation, a multitude of cognitive and psychological benefits, resilience to neurological conditions, and slower aging effects. This research is especially exciting as we look toward the future of disease prevention and anti-aging science.

In addition to the many cognitive benefits, fasting has been shown to improve a multitude of other bodily functions and help against disease. For example, IF can help decrease blood sugar levels to help reduce insulin resistance, decrease certain inflammatory markers (which improves overall health), and enhance heart health by improving blood pressure and triglycerides and cholesterol levels. It can also mitigate and prevent neurodegenerative disorders, boost immunity, improve gut health, delay aging, and aid in cancer prevention as well as increasing the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

Of course, not everyone should engage in this practicespecifically, children and teens under 18, pregnant women, people with diabetes or blood sugar problems, and those with a history of eating disorders. But, for the most part, this is a universally healthy practice. Valter Longo, a professor of biological sciences and gerontology at the University of Southern California, explains that The longer you fast, the more you basically kill cells. That sounds like a bad thing, but the cells that die are unhealthy ones. The benefits of fasting are not limited to people who are overweight, predisposed to neurodegenerative disorder, or even looking to improve their cognitive functioninggiven the current science, it appears to be something that could benefit all people.

IF has slowly manifested itself into an everyday practice for me, and for the past few years, I have practiced it religiously. I only eat within an eight hour period, usually 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., which might sound difficult if youve never tried it before, but I promise that it doesnt take long for your body to acclimate and make it habitual. If youre struggling with concentration, feeling sluggish, want to avoid disease, or just generally want to live a longer life, the science says that it is worth a tryand I agree!

Ascension registrar: Office renovations, expansions for early voting costing more than expected – The Advocate

Posted: at 6:53 am

Ascension Parish Registrar of Voters Shanie Bourg expects to be asking parish government officials for more money to finish renovations and expansions of her offices in Gonzales and Donaldsonville to better accommodate in-person early voting.

Bourg also told parish officials in a recent presentation that promised programs to expand voter registration to nursing homes and assisted living centers were put on hold last year.

COVID-19 concerns with vulnerable residents, as well as a state audit and other matters, led to the program delays, but at least some of them will be restarted this year, she said.

Bourg is a former Louisiana Secretary of State elections administrator who is in her first year as Ascension registrar. She took over from Robert Poche', the longtime registrar who retired in early 2021.

Bourg also said she plans to hire a new chief deputy who has experience with handling paper ballots and another civil service employee.

She suggested that having experience with paper ballots will come in handy when the state buys new voting machines.

Bourg said state law requires they incorporate paper ballots.State officials are current discussing their options for new machines.

Bourg, an Ascension native, has been adding paint and floors to her Gonzales office at the old courthouse annex on Irma Boulevard and trying to expand or reorganize both offices for early voting, she says.

Twice daily we'll send you the day's biggest headlines. Sign up today.

But the cost of furniture and building materials have gone up since last year. Bourg informed the Parish Council on Thursday, Feb. 3, that the $60,000 that she had set aside this year for her Gonzales office renovation won't be enough.

While Bourg told the council in a virtual meeting she is still working on the numbers, her presentation materials estimated the cost of expanding areas at the Gonzales office for early voting could run $15,000 to $20,000.

In Donaldsonville, Bourg is trying to repurpose a room in the next-door assessor's office and use it for early voting.

Unlike the Gonzales renovation, the work at this historic courthouse in Donaldsonville won't involve paint or new floors just new furniture to reorganize the entire office.

The room in the assessor's office is connected to the registrar's office by a door that had been blocked with furniture and cabinets, according to a slide presentation Bourg delivered to the council.

"I dont think it's going cost a whole lot just to put some new furniture in here to make it accessible for voters to access that room," she said.

For early voting currently, machines are tucked into one corner of registrar's small Donaldsonville office.

Bourg said she expected to make a formal presentation of her budget request to the council in a coming Finance Committee meeting.

What:My Ascension Tour with Emma Benoit in person

(the event will include an introduction by Emma, showing of the "My Ascension" film, and a panel discussion with Emma, local mental health advocates, counselors, and medical professionals.

When: Sunday, Feb. 6 from 2 to 5 pm

Where: Willmar Education and Arts Center

A suicide attempt left 16-year-old varsity cheerleader, Emma Benoit, paralyzed, but propelled her on a mission to use her painful experience to help others find hope, and shine more light on the fact that 20 young people die every day by suicide in the United States.

My Ascension is a feature length documentary that chronicles Emma's inspiring journey and quest to walk again, as she works to bring Hope Squad, a school-based suicide prevention program, to Louisiana. The film also highlights the stories of two remarkable young people who tragically did not survive their attempts, and we learn first-hand from their families, friends, school officials and suicide prevention experts about the devastating effects of suicide and what can be done to prevent it.

A collaborative effort between Wings of Hope (Willmar), Smiles for Jake (Brainerd), and The Heart and Mind Connection (Anoka), is bringing My Ascension and Emma to Minnesota February 5-10, 2022. All three nonprofits share a common vision: to bring hope, mental health awareness, and suicide prevention efforts to our communities.

The tour is intended to provide inspiration and information to our school-age kids and their families as well as community members. Acknowledging that were all affected by mental health is the first step to affecting change. And the fact that our youth are being directly affected by mental health issues and recent suicides is cause for alarm. The intent is to start discussions, open the door for support, and bring hope to families who care and love those who are struggling.

Ascension Macomb has new technology to help patients with blood clots from COVID-19 – WXYZ

Posted: at 6:53 am

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) The omicron surge continues to put local hospitals in a tailspin. Now, doctors are seeing a rise in blood clots in patients suffering with COVID-19.

Where you land during an emergency could make the difference between life and death as one Macomb County woman found out when her life was on the line.

At the end of 2021 Christina Peak, a nurse, was not working. Three months pregnant, she found herself short of breath and feeling like she was running on a treadmill when she was only sitting.

I said my heart should not be beating that fast, Peak said.

Without health insurance and afraid of a big bill, she stayed home hoping she would feel better but instead, she fainted.

I said, you got to call 911. I said, something is not right, Peak said.

After passing out two more times, paramedics arrived. Her oxygen level and heart rate were low. She had pulmonary embolisms in both lungs and at risk of death.

I remember my niece hitting me and saying, Tee Tee, wake up, wake up. It's going to be OK, waking up, Peak said.

They raced her to Ascension Macomb-Oakland where Dr. Theodore Schreiber says they have pioneered brand innovative technology to deal with blood clots on the lungs.

How major of a case was hers?" WXYZs Carolyn Clifford asked Dr. Schreiber.

It was a very major case. Anytime someone has had a pulmonary embolism, has episodes where they faint and lost consciousness, pass out, that meant the heart is incapable of pumping enough blood to the vital organs, Schreiber said.

Ascension Macomb has a PERT team, which stands for Pulmonary Embolism Response Team. Even with an overload of COVID-19 patients, their emergency rooms know what to do when a patient has a clot.

Without a PERT team and had she not arrived to you, would she have died? Clifford asked.

Had she landed at another hospital without a PERT team and without the knowledge and experience we have at Ascension Macomb, she would have died, Schreiber said.

Knowing she was pregnant, doctors told her they had to save her first and time was critical.

If you go, then you and your baby will go as well, Schreiber said.

They first did the least invasive procedure to break up the clots by going up her groin.

It felt as if an elephant was on my chest, I mean I could not breathe, it was horrible, Peak said.

They quickly realized it did not work and she had to be rushed back to the operating room.

So, I'm trying to breath oxygen, 15 liters. And I still couldn't breathe at the point, it was like panicking, Peak said.

An entire team of doctors surrounded her.

I just remember throwing my hand in the air and saying, 'I quit. God, this is my time.' They were just so supportive, Peak said. I could actually feel that last blood clot pulled out. Oh my God, I can breathe.

Shreiber says before clot retriever technology, a patient like Peak would have needed open -heart surgery to remove her pulmonary embolisms.

It's the only easily available technology that's easily useable and safe to remove most if not all of the lung clots, Schreiber said.

Shreiber says since the pandemic began, the number of lung clots in patients doubled, tripled and quadrupled.

Risk factors include weight, exercise, heart disease, diabetes and if you are elderly. And a major risk factor now is the presence of COVID-19.

Did you realize how lucky you were going to a hospital with a PERT team? Clifford asked Peak.

To me, or it could be based on my intuition that was nothing but God, Peak said.

Shreiber says if you have any symptoms of pulmonary embolism including leg clots, which cause swelling, pain in your calves or new discoloration, seek medical attention immediately.

Genshin Impact: Everlasting Moonglow – How to get it, stats, and ascension materials – Gamepur

Posted: at 6:53 am

The Everlasting Moonglow is a 5-star Catalyst weapon that was released alongside Sangonomiya Kokomis initial run. Its a weapon specially made for the Hydro healer, Sangonomiya Kokomi, and has limited utility as a weapon overall.

To obtain the Everlasting Moonglow, youll need to pull on the limited weapons banner in the second half of Version 2.5. After the limited weapon banner featuring the Everlasting Moonglow ends, youll have to wait until its featured on another banner to obtain it.

The Everlasting Moonglow is one of the worst 5-star Catalyst weapons in the game, outclassed by a 3-star weapon in the support role. This weapon is literally only useful for one character in the game, in a role that is suboptimal for that character.

This character is Sangonomiya Kokomi, who can utilize the Everlasting Moonglows passive to assist her in a DPS build. However, this build pales in comparison to her support build, where the Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayer provides more utility with the ATK buff on its passive.

Unless you are a die-hard Kokomi fan with plans to build her for damage, its highly recommended you dont pull this weapon. Its not good.

Prince Charles leads tribute on 70-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to throne – Hindustan Times

Posted: at 6:53 am

We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother's wish, Prince Charles said in a statement.

Britain's Prince Charles led tributes to his mother, Queen Elizabeth, on the 70-year anniversary of her accession to the throne on Sunday, saying it was an opportunity for the country to unite and celebrate her service to the nation.

Charles also thanked the queen for her statement on Saturday that she hoped the heir to the throne's wife, Camilla, would become Queen Consort when he becomes king.

"We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother's wish," he said in a statement. "As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.

"The year of this unprecedented Platinum Jubilee brings an opportunity for us all to come together in celebrating the service of The Queen, by whose example we will continue to be led in the years to come."

When was the Queen crowned? How old was Elizabeth II when she took the throne and ascension meaning explained – NationalWorld

Posted: at 6:53 am

Queen Elizabeth II will become the first ever British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee later this year

Later this year, Queen Elizabeth II is set to become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee - 70 years on the throne.

While the Queen was crowned in 1953 in Westminster Abbey, her accession actually took place the year earlier, in February 1952.

This is everything you need to know.

When was the Queens accession?

Princess Elizabeth acceded the throne at the age of 25 after her father, King George VI died on 6 February 1952. She had been the eldest of the Kings two daughters, and was thus next in line to the throne.

The Kings death came after a prolonged illness, and he passed away during his sleep in the Royal Estate at Sandringham.

The Queen had been in Kenya during this time, and subsequently became the first Sovereign to accede while abroad in over 200 years.

When was the Coronation?

While the Queens accession to the throne occurred in February 1952, her Coronation did not take place for a while yet, on 2 June 1953 in Westminster Abbey. So while she acceded the throne at 25, she was crowned at age 27.

The Royal Family explains: The Coronation of the new Sovereign follows some months after his or her accession, following a period of mourning and as a result of the enormous amount of preparation required to organise the ceremony.

The Coronation was conducted by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and was attended by the likes of the Prime Minister and citizens of the other Commonwealth countries, and representatives of foreign states.

More than 20 million people watched the service when it was broadcast on television at the request of the Queen. While the day was plagued by heavy rain, crowds of spectators viewed the procession along the route.

The ceremony began at 11:15am and ran for nearly three hours, with the service split into six parts: the recognition, the oath, the anointing, the investiture (which included the crowning), the enthronement and the homage.

She became the sixth Queen, and the 39th Sovereign, to be crowned at Westminster Abbey.

In 2013, the Queen celebrated her 60th anniversary of her Coronation, which was marked with a festival in the garden of Buckingham Palace, hosted by the Royal Warrant Holders Association.

What is the Platinum Jubilee?

The Platinum Jubilee will mark the Queens 70th anniversary on the throne. While Sunday 6 February would technically mark the date that the Queen ascended to the throne, it is not a date that the Queen wishes to celebrate as it is also the date of her fathers death.

The Platinum Jubilee will thus be held on Friday 3 June later this year, with the Queen becoming the first ever British monarch to achieve such an occasion.

She became the longest reigning British monarch back in 2015, when she surpassed that of the previous record holder - her great-great-grandmother Victoria.

Queen Elizabeth II commemorated 65 years on the throne in 2017 with her Sapphire Jubilee, for which she is also the only British monarch to achieve.

Whats planned for the Platinum Jubilee?

The May Day bank holiday weekend will be shifted to Thursday 2 June, with an additional bank holiday on Friday 3 June to introduce a four day weekend to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.

On Thursday 2 June, the Queens birthday parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, will be held, with over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians coming together in the traditional parade to mark the Queens official birthday.

Also on the Thursday, over 1,500 beacons will be lit throughout the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, as is tradition to mark events like Royal Jubilees, weddings and Coronations.

On Friday a service of Thanksgiving for the Queens reign will be held at St Pauls Cathedral.

On Saturday 4 June, the Queen will attend the Derby at Epsom Downs, alongside members of the royal family. The BBC will also broadcast a Platinum Party at the Palace which will see some of the biggest names in the world of entertainment come together to celebrate the Queens seven decades on the throne.

Finally, on Sunday 5 June, members of the public are encouraged to take part in The Big Jubilee Lunch, where communities celebrate their connections and get to know each other a bit better, in the spirit of fun and friendship.

Also taking place on Sunday 5 June to wrap up the Platinum Jubilee celebrations is the Platinum Jubilee Pageant.

A pageant of over 5,000 people from across the UK and the Commonwealth will take place against the backdrop of Buckingham Palace, and the surrounding streets.

It will feature street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume, and celebrate the service of the Queens reign, as well as honouring the collective service of people and communities across the country.
