Woundedas Boris Johnson is, it is worth remembering that his government still has plans for the most significant attack on human rights in twenty years.

By that I do not mean thePolice, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, or theJudicial Review and Courts Bill, bad as both are. I am thinking, rather, of the governmentsconsultationon watering down the Human Rights Act.

For sixteen years, Conservative MPs have been calling for that act to be repealed. Their voices have been amplified by the right-wing press, with stories blaming immigration on lawyers finding human rights defenses for their clients.

That campaign obscures the historic function of the act. Before it was passed in 1998, if a citizen wanted to challenge an act of government as unlawful, they would invoke our unwritten constitution and our common law (i.e., judge-made) tradition of the rule of law.

Essential rights such as the authority of a jury over a judge were established on a case-by-case basis without any agreement as to what the most important rights were whether it was the right to silence, or freedom from slavery, or freedom from torture.

The reason the Human Rights Act passed is that there had been one attempt to codify the common law tradition after 1945, when a group of Conservative lawyers had wanted to draw up minimum legal standards for Europe after the defeat of fascism. They had summarized the UK tradition into twenty articles for export: the European Convention on Human Rights.

In passing the Human Rights Act in 1998, a Labour government took the convention and chose to use it both as a statement of universal human rights principles and as the best starting guide to the common law. The UK constitutionalized the common law (i.e., recorded it in a single document), providing a degree of certainty for the first time.

It would, in principle, be open to any government to repeal the Human Rights Act and withdraw from the Strasbourg human rights court. We could start again and say that only domestically recognized rights matter. Two states in Europe refuse to accept the European Convention on Human Rights: the Vatican City and Alexander Lukashenkos dictatorship in Belarus. We could join them, but it would be such a defeat for British ambitions of soft power that not even Boris Johnson proposes that.

The Conservatives propose, rather, a pick-and-mix attitude toward rights, in which some rights would be enhanced and others would be diminished.

The governments central purpose in attacking human rights is to prevent illegal and irregular migration, by which ministers mean that refugees have the temerity to arrive in Britain on false travel documents. But that is the point about dictatorships: they jail or kill their critics they do not give them visas to help them make their protests from abroad.

The government wants to put obstacles in the way of human rights claims; for example, requiring permission before they can be brought, or preventing courts from enforcing certain rights contained in the convention, or reducing the power of the courts to strike down legislation intended to curtail rights.

But the Human Rights Act has been used by a wide-ranging coalition of interests and campaigners: the Hillsborough families, tenants fighting eviction, parents trying to challenge local authority proposals to take children into care. The new obstacles would not only harm migrants they would take rights from everyone.

What is most striking is the lack of ambition behind the governments proposals. It would not be difficult to take the existing Human Rights Act and bolster it to make certain rights overt that have too little protection in the law. A more ambitious government, seeking to increase popular rights, might constitutionalize the rightto housing, tobe fed, to the environment.

We are supposed to be governed by a generation of libertarian MPs. If so, then why not increase peoples ability to challenge the state by reducing the barriers to Human Rights claims, making them cheaper and easier to bring, and not restricting them to the High Court?

Instead, the consultation would work by taking away much that we have now, and in return only add two things a vague commitment to jury trials and a restatement of the existing defense of free speech.

Would a British Bill of Rights protecting trial by jury have shielded the Edward Colston jurors from ministerscriticisms of them? Indeed, how does the government have the cheek to pretend it supports trial by jury, when it is increasing the sentences magistrates courts can pass from six monthsto a year, thereby taking tens of thousands of trials away from juries?

Would a clause protecting free speech cause the government to pause for a moment, before implementing its Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, with its bans on noisy protests and its criminalization oftraveler encampments?

To ask the questions is to answer them. The Conservatives proposals will only strengthen the state: the partys libertarianism is skin-deep. Their changes to the Human Rights Act will only serve to make rights harder to enforce.

If the removal of Boris Johnson would make it harder for the government to press on with its plans to take away our rights, thenhis fallcannot come soon enough.

Democrats add Kildee to program that bolsters vulnerable incumbents – The Detroit News

Posted: at 11:56 pm

WashingtonNational Democrats added U.S.Rep. Dan Kildee's seat to their program that aims toprotect vulnerable incumbent Democrats in the Houseand said they aim to target the seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer in the midterm elections.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee updated its Frontline Program this week as a result of redistricting. The DCCCaddedKildee and kept on the list U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, who is running for reelection in a new Lansing-based district. Thirty-two Democratic incumbents are part of the program.

The DCCC removed from the Frontline Program U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Waterford Township, as she's now running for reelection in the 11th District that's considered a safe Democratic seat. Stevens is facing a primary against U.S. Rep. Andy Levin, D-Bloomfield Township.

"Frontline House Democrats head into November with a record of delivering for the American people by fighting to end this pandemic, rebooting our economy, and putting millions of Americans to work rebuilding America,DCCC Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney said in a statement.

Across the country, Republicans will have to defend their extremist agenda that just doesnt work for American families.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has not yet announced its Patriot Program for vulnerable Republican incumbents.

The DCCC on Thursday announced that the new 3rd District in west Michigan is among 38 GOP-held or open seats that it's targeting this fall. The groupsaid it views the new 3rd, which covers the Grand Rapids, Grand Haven and Muskegon areas, as trending toward Democrats and noted Meijer's challenge by John Gibbs, a Republican who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

Democrat Hillary Scholten of Grand Rapids has spoken with the DCCC and is expected to be a contender. In 2020, she lost to Meijer in the old 3rd District 47% to 53% when the seat was open due to Libertarian Rep. Justin Amash's retirement.

Jeff Winston, Democratic chairman of the congressional district, said a Democrat will have a "fair shot" at the newly drawn seat.

We're offering a great rate on digital subscriptions. Click here.

"After decades, upon decades of just horrible partisan gerrymandering, theCitizens Redistricting Commission did a really good job. In our particular case for the 3rd Congressional, it made it way more competitive," Winston said.

"On a level playing field, this is this is where the rubber hits the road. Our candidates are better, our message is better. Let the voters decide in a fair way, and Democrats will be victorious."

The DCCC is also targeting the open battleground seat in new 10th District, which includes parts of Macomb and Oakland counties and is rated "likely" Republican by Cook Political Report.National Republicans are hoping that former Senate nominee John James runs in this swing district, where the Democratic primary field is starting to grow.

Trump narrowly won the district in 2020, butDemocrats have also been successful there, including Sen. Gary Peters in 2020 andGov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2018.

Members of the Frontline Program would usually get extra fundraising and organizational help from the party organization, especially as Democratsseekto protect their majority in the House this fall.

The Lansing-based district where Slotkin plans to runis rated a tossup by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

Slotkin flipped a GOP seat in 2018 andrepresents one of just seven Democratic-held districts won by former President Donald Trump in 2020.Shecould end up facing state Sen. Tom Barrett, a Republican from Charlotte, who launched his congressional campaign late last year.

Kildee of Flint Township chaired the Frontliner Program in a previous cycle. He is running in the new 8th District thatincludes Flint and the Tri-Cities and which President Joe Biden wonby about 2 percentage points. The district is also rated a tossup.

National Republicans are aiming to snag a top-tier candidate to run against Kildee after former state Attorney General Bill Schuette of Midland opted not to run this month.

"Dan Kildee is one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the country because of his lockstep support for Nancy Pelosis socialist agenda," National Republican Campaign Committee Mike Berg said. "The Pelosi-Kildee agenda has led to closed schools, rising pricesand skyrocketing crime.

At least one Republican has jumped into the race already Paul Junge of Brighton said this month said he intends to moveto Genesee County to run. Junge ran for Congress in the 11th District in 2020 and lost to Stevens.

Kildee was reelected in 2020 54%-42% over former state Rep. Tim Kelly, R-Saginaw Township.

What is the alternative medicine Ayurveda and does it work? – NationalWorld

Posted: at 11:55 pm

Ayurveda states that the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space are present in everything, including the human body

Its not uncommon for people to turn to herbal remedies or alternative medicines if theyre feeling unwell or have an ache or pain.

But Ayurveda, which is one of the oldest healthcare practices in the world and originates in India, now has global influences, with many people following the ancient form as a way of relieving pain and promoting healing.

Ayur means Life and Veda means wisdom/journey/enlightenment - and it focuses on these key pillars:

When combining specific, tailored parts of these pillars, it is believed the practitioner will live a long and healthy life.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda states that the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space are present in everything, including the human body.

These forces - each have their own characteristics and tendencies - are believed to combine to create a unique blueprint for every individual.

Your Dosha is your unique blueprint, with the three main Doshas being Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth).

It is believed that any of these elements can move out of balance depending on the individuals lifestyle, the season, location and diet, and are said to cause imbalance which then in turn leads to illness and disease.

Scarlett Woodford, 33, is an Ayurvedic practitioner from London who says that coaches will gently observe you and ask questions in order to determine your current Dosha type.

They will then tailor a suitable therapy plan that aims to bring you back into optimum health and alignment with nature, Scarlett added.

The practitioner said that Ayurveda takes everything into account and believes that nothing acts in isolation, with all bodily organs, tissues, systems, channels and mental activity being connected.

This is echoed by Karolina Raczynska, secretary of the Ayurvedic Professionals Association, who says people should find a practitioner who can assess the health of the patient and formulate advice which is always individual for each patient.

Does Ayurveda work?

At an Ayurvedic clinic, a coach might treat someone for conditions such as anxiety, diabetes, psoriasis, arthritis, depression, polycystic ovary syndrome and asthma.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health adds: A few studies suggest that Ayurvedic preparations may reduce pain and increase function in people with osteoarthritis and help manage symptoms in people with type 2 diabetes, but most of these trials are small or not well-designed.

There is little scientific evidence on Ayurvedas value for other health issues. People should never replace proven conventional treatments or therapies with unproven alternatives.

In regards to Ayurveda and cancer, Scarlet said that with more severe conditions such as this, it is more about symptom management than disease reversal, with many people reaching beyond the realms of traditional medicine when faced with such a diagnosis.

She added that practices involved in Ayurveda, including meditation, the use of oils, and manual therapies are proven to have a soothing, calming effect on the mind and body.

Martin Ledwick, head information nurse at Cancer Research UK, said: There is no scientific evidence that Ayurvedic medicine is effective at treating cancer either on its own or alongside conventional treatment. We would not recommend using it instead of evidence-based, conventional medicine.

Some people may choose to use it to gain a sense of well-being alongside their conventional treatment, but we would always advise checking with your doctor before taking any alternative or complementary treatment like Ayurveda to make sure there are no known interactions with any of the conventional drugs or treatments you are receiving.

You can do anything from making small, seemingly minor changes to your daily routine

Addressing the question as to whether Ayurveda is as effective as more traditional and modern-day medicines, Scarlett said it is too difficult to say.

She said that different practitioners will offer different opinions, but in her personal experience the two can be used together.

My Ayurvedic teacher is a medical GP as well as an Ayurvedic coach, therefore the teachings I have are very unique, added Scarlett.

One point to highlight is that Ayurveda can largely work as a preventative treatment, offering 360 degree holistic suggestions that tackle the mind, body and spirit, whereas traditional medicine tends to treat the physical symptom presented by a client in that moment.

For those looking to use Ayurveda alongside more modern-day medicine, Scarlett said that every case is different and in the past she has advised clients who are already taking a prescribed medication to keep on taking it.

She said: Its not necessarily a good idea to think totally in extremes, especially for those who have been reliant on a certain medication for a long time.

Thats the great thing about Ayurveda, you can do anything from making small, seemingly minor changes to your daily routine, to undergoing quite a routine changing seasonal cleanse, Scarlett added.

Both Ayurveda and modern medicine can be extremely helpful depending on the complaint, and can even compliment each other, Scarlett said.

Acupuncture for IBS: Efficacy and alternative treatment options – Medical News Today

Posted: at 11:55 pm

Acupuncture is an alternative medical treatment that involves inserting tiny needles into specific points on a persons body. This approach may treat certain pains and illnesses, with some experts stating it could help with irritable bowel syndrome.

Acupuncture aims to balance a persons energy. Some claim this can help boost a persons well-being, treat pain, and cure some illnesses.

Acupuncture originates from traditional Chinese medicine. Research suggests the practice is effective in treating certain types of pain.

However, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that there is limited evidence suggesting acupuncture effectively treats ailments other than pain.

This article looks at whether acupuncture can help with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms.

IBS refers to a group of symptoms that occur together, the most common of which are:

Some people with the condition claim that acupuncture has been very useful in helping relieve IBS-related symptoms. However, others with IBS say it offers no relief from these symptoms.

One older 2010 study involving 230 people with IBS gave some participants acupuncture and others a sham treatment, or placebo acupuncture. The study also included a control group that received no treatment at all.

The researchers found no difference in results between those who received the acupuncture and those who received the placebo acupuncture.

However, both groups of participants experienced more symptom relief than the control group. This study may suggest that positive results from acupuncture are due to the placebo effect.

Acupuncture practitioners may debate this conclusion, arguing that there is no way to provide sham acupuncture. This is because the results of acupuncture are systemic and less dependent upon the exact location of the needle insertion.

They may also argue that any insertion of an acupuncture needle is acupuncture, so any results of sham acupuncture are the results of the practice itself. Therefore, concluding that these positive results are due to the placebo effect may be inaccurate and actually demonstrate that acupuncture works.

A 2014 review of several controlled trials concludes that acupuncture effectively treats IBS symptoms. The research showed that the practice helped ease symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and the sensation of incomplete bowel movements.

The review authors added that there were some limitations within the review, meaning they could not recommend acupuncture as a first-line treatment for IBS. They also stated that there was no evidence of the long term benefits of acupuncture for individuals with this condition.

One 2017 study compared acupuncture with traditional Western medicines for treating diarrhea associated with IBS. The study divided 61 IBS patients into two groups. One group received abdominal acupuncture, and the other group received pinaverium bromide tablets.

The results showed that acupuncture was a more effective treatment than Western medication. It stated that acupuncture effectively relieved abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, poor stool output, and stool abnormalities.

Another 2020 study compared acupuncture with traditional medication: polyethylene glycol 4000, or pinaverium bromide. The study found that acupuncture was a more effective treatment for the symptoms of IBS than this medicine.

Acupuncture points are specific parts of the body where acupuncture practitioners place their needles.

Below are some acupuncture points that these practitioners may use when treating people with IBS.

Here are some other alternative treatments for people with IBS.

Hypnotherapy involves using hypnosis to treat specific symptoms or health conditions.

According to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD), several clinical studies have shown that the practice can effectively treat people with IBS.

The IFFGD states that hypnotherapy for IBS involves progressive relaxation, soothing imagery, and sensations that focus on the individuals symptoms. The organization adds that hypnotherapy has led to people experiencing improvements in well-being, quality of life, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a method of working with people to explore relationships between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The approach looks at how these relationships affect a persons well-being.

IBS is a chronic condition that is difficult to treat. Psychological processes play a role in both the development and the maintenance of the disorder. Some studies have shown that CBT can help provide significant and long-lasting improvements to IBS symptoms.

Certain mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and somatic symptom disorder, can cause IBS or worsen its symptoms.

Therefore, people with IBS may wish to use relaxation techniques to help control some symptoms of IBS.

According to the IFFGD, some of the following relaxation techniques may help a person with this condition:

A persons diet can affect their IBS symptoms. Some foods may worsen these symptoms, so a person with the condition may wish to avoid them.

Common foods that may cause IBS issues include:

Healthcare experts may suggest the following changes to help with IBS:

A healthcare professional may also recommend using medicines to treat certain symptoms of IBS. The following medicines may treat IBS with diarrhea:

The following medicines may treat IBS with constipation:

Doctors may prescribe additional medications to treat any abdominal pain due to IBS:

Healthcare professionals may also recommend that a person with IBS takes probiotics. These feature live microorganisms, most commonly bacteria, that can benefit a persons health.

People can use probiotics to balance their intestinal flora, known as the gut microbiome. Probiotics can help digest food, destroy disease-causing cells, or produce vitamins.

Some studies show that probiotics can help improve the symptoms of IBS.

If a person believes they may have IBS, they should contact a doctor. A healthcare professional can offer a diagnosis and devise treatment strategies if necessary.

To diagnose IBS, doctors usually review symptoms, medical and family history, and perform a physical exam. Doctors may order blood or stool tests to rule out other health problems in some cases.

If a person already has IBS and they experience a sudden worsening of symptoms, they may also wish to consult a doctor.

An individual with IBS may wish to seek medical attention if they experience:

Acupuncture is a medical treatment that originates from traditional Chinese medicine. It involves inserting needles or applying pressure to certain points on the body.

IBS is a long term gastrointestinal disorder that can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and bloating.

Some evidence states acupuncture can help ease IBS symptoms, while some research also shows that this may be due to the placebo effect.

However, several medications are available to treat the varying symptoms of IBS.

A person can also use other approaches to treat IBS symptoms, such as hypnotherapy, CBT, relaxation techniques, and dietary changes.

Pain is not a normal condition Medford News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News – Mail Tribune

Posted: at 11:55 pm

If youre having any pain, raise your hand and join the crowd.

The journal Pain Management and the Elderly reported last June that a recent ... National Institutes of Health-funded study found that more than half (53%) of the older adults surveyed reported having bothersome pain in the last month; three-quarters of them reported having pain in more than one location.

This is even higher (up to 83%) among the elderly in nursing homes. That's why pain was officially declared "The Fifth Vital Sign some years ago. The evaluation of pain has been as important and basic as the assessment of temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate and heart rate.

And then theres pain that doesnt go away. From the article, Managing Chronic Pain in the Elderly (September 2018): Chronic pain is defined as the pain that lasts for three to six months or more than expected. If you are an older person experiencing pain, keep in mind that you run a higher-than-average risk of side effects from all drugs, including analgesics like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofen.

Pain and pain management are a growing concern among Americans 65 and older. Pain may be underreported due to the misconception that it is a normal process of aging. Its not, and it needs more attention than it might be receiving. So, what can you do?

Many years ago, I worked at a clinic in Ashland, the Pacific Spine and Pain Center. The late Dr. James Dunn, a neurosurgeon, created a multidisciplinary team. It consisted of a pain management program that included osteopathic and chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and exercise, massage therapy, medical hypnosis, biofeedback, mindfulness practices, pain injections, and several medical providers and practices, including surgery. It was a one-of-a-kind medical practice that served the community for a long time. What are your options for care now?

First, its well known that there are positive benefits of incorporating an exercise program, even light exercise, into a pain management program for older adults. The benefits include improving physical function, reducing isolation and depression, and enhancing balance and mental acuity. Next, according to the National Institute on Aging, 41% of older adults (ages 60 to 69) are frequent users of complementary and alternative medicine, including acupuncture, vitamins and herbal supplements, counseling interventions, and most of the modalities mentioned above at the former Spine Center.

In addition, you can find many other practices in the valley that address pain. Here are a few.

In Medford: Providence Interventional Pain Management Clinic (541-732-8360); Pain Specialists of Southern Oregon (541-779-5228); Touchstone Interventional Pain Center (541-773-1435); and in Ashland: Advanced Pain Care (541-482-1712).

If you are interested in incorporating any of the complementary approaches, you will need to locate separate providers for each one of those.

In unremitting pain, people sometimes express the wish to no longer live. When asked about this, though, it turns out that what they dont want is continuing to live with that degree of pain. That might mean putting together the best combination of medical providers, medications, complementary and alternative approaches, and a great support team.

People usually find they can return to a level of functioning that works well enough to enjoy their life again. Not all pain can be totally erased, but finding what works best, and how to reside in a body that is not always comfortable, might be a practical solution.

ResearchED: Growth Of Hemp Treatments And CBD Oils In India – ED Times

Posted: at 11:55 pm

Cannabis is something that brings up many taboos in Indian society. A subject of intense debate globally, cannabis is finding increasing acceptance in the medical community, with global developments in terms of policy and society for accepting medicinal cannabis. It is thoroughly ingrained in the Indian Ayurveda and Atharvaveda system, it is high time that there is a consensus about its huge medicinal potential in modern-day India.

To justify the title and the content, it is pertinent that I start here. Cannabis and hemp are of the same species, but with different chemical components that make them. Cannabis has a large concentration of Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC) and a low amount of Cannabidiol (CBD). Hemp is just the opposite, having high traces of CBD and a low concentration of THC.

While both seemingly look interchangeable, cannabis is used for recreational and medicinal uses while hemp is for medicinal and industrial uses.

Late actor Irrfan Khans wife Sutapa Sikdar appealed to legalise CBD oil in India. This widens the socio-political scenario of using hemp as a treatment method in India. CBD oil is an extract from the cannabis plant.

The two main substances in it are cannabidiol and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol. The high that is caused by the consumption of cannabis is due to THC. CBD, however, does not cause any form of intoxication. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and then diluting it with another form of oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.

Cannabidiol affects the brain, preventing the breakdown of a chemical that aggravates the pain and affects mood and mental functions along with reduction of pain and anxiety. It also reduces psychotic symptoms associated with conditions such as schizophrenia as well as epilepsy.

According to sources and archaeological findings, cannabis was used for varying ailments as a treatment methodology. Besides medical usage, it was also used for cultural, religious and spiritual reasons. The earliest written reference to Cannabis in India occurs in the Atharvaveda, dating to about 1500 BCE. This ancient document speaks of the bhang plant as one of the five sacred plants and as a source of happiness, giver of joy, and bringer of freedom. We tell of the five kingdoms of herbs headed by Soma; may it, and kusa grass, and bhang and barley, and the herb saha, release us from anxiety.

It was also used as a common staple food as hemp seeds were common and nutritious. The usage of hemp was shunned in the 20th century. This happened not only in India but worldwide. The main reason was the usage of cannabis as a narcotic. With the advent of opiates, there was a significant shift in modern-day medicine and clinical research based on treatments and ailments that were not cannabis. In recent times, it has come to light that opiates may be more dangerous than initially believed while cannabis turns out to be more medicinally useful than believed.

Indias primary fiasco is the stigma that prevails around the usage of cannabis in general. Therefore the first step is to break the stigma by making the treatment method available to severely ill patients and then open it up to the market at large for milder treatments. It is legalised in a few countries by a combination of limiting sellers, quality control, prescription-only usage and as a last resort method. The latest studies show that the medical usage of cannabis can also shun the risk of getting infected by COVID-19 as well.

Modern-day medical usage is gathered by risk versus benefits profiling and ensuring the quality of the product. Along with the fact that Indias pharmaceutical industry is well developed and there are ample research facilities, the first modern medicinal usage of CBD could be as early as 1-2 years in the future. However, sufficient funding, easy access to permits and adequate interest have to be shown in the sector.

The United States has reached a point where there are 91 deaths per year due to opiates. If India can avoid this pitfall and realise the true medical potential of cannabis, it will yield better results and lesser deaths. Moreover, this opens up a newer market for medicinal drugs and can further boost our economy.

At the I-CARE summit in 2016, the Drug Controller General Of India said, Yes, we want to have a lenient approach rather than a restrictive approach. You people will be thinking and working together and as a regulator and technocrat, we are with you, till you are scientifically going to prove that you will protect the people of this country. We have already worked out the phytopharmaceutical path for new product development to be used for humanity and the people of this country. You can use that platform. I see huge potential in these kinds of alternative medicines in the treatment of patients and people.

Since then, the government has provided licences, albeit limited, to grow medically valuable marijuana in certain places and of course, with regulation.

On a more personal note, I would like to tell you readers that I will stop writing for ED Times for a while now, due to personal reasons. Hope you enjoyed the content that I brought along for the ride and maybe learnt something new every month.
