Voices: In the shadow of the pandemic, domestic violence and slavery are still flourishing – Yahoo News

Covid isolation periods and the associated impacts of the pandemic continue to allow abusers to go to new extremes to exert control (Getty)

With such monstrous nonchalance, the man in the short video clip drags the Ethiopian domestic worker by her hair down the street in broad daylight. She is screaming her heart out as her shoes are ripped off by the concrete underneath her. He loosens his grip briefly to savagely beat her. People watch from their balconies, someone is clearly filming.

This disturbing video was shot just a few kilometres east of Beirut. Activists who located the woman this week said she is now safe but due to be sent home on Monday. They told me the attacker, her employer, was taken into custody but reportedly released only a day later. It is a painful reminder of the ongoing shadow pandemic within the pandemic: domestic violence and emotional abuse.

Rights groups across the world warned in 2020 that cases of abuse in the home soared during coronavirus lockdowns, which piled emotional and financial pressure on households. This (although not exclusively) overwhelmingly impacted women (one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence mostly from intimate partners, according to the UN). Domestic migrant workers in countries like Lebanon, who are trapped in the slave-like kafala sponsorship system and often living with their employers, found themselves on the searing frontline of that.

But the truth is, this shadow pandemic didnt just stop because lockdowns were lifted. Rights workers have told me that instances of violence whether physical, emotional, financial, or sexual abuse continue to rise for many reasons, not least because of Covid isolation periods and ongoing associated economic woes.

In Lebanon, this is depressingly true. The pandemic and an unprecedented explosion in Beirut in August 2020 came alongside and contributed to one of the most spectacular economic collapses in modern history.

This week, the Lebanese lira surpassed a new record low of 30,000 lira to the dollar, even though it is still pegged at 1,500. This has helped contribute to the highest inflation rates in the world, outstripping Venezuela and Zimbabwe. It means one single canister of cooking gas costs more than half the monthly minimum wage, and the cost of four weeks use of a generator, essential as there is no longer any state-proved electricity, is six times a regular monthly salary.

Story continues

The poorest and most vulnerable have, of course, been hardest hit. Among them are the estimated 250,000 domestic migrant workers, who work in Lebanon under the kafala system. Used across countries in the Middle East, the kafala system shuts workers out of basic protections like a minimum wage, limits on working hours or the right to change jobs without their employers consent. They cannot even regain control of their passports to leave the country if they want out. Many women over the past two years have messaged me, trapped in their employers houses, where they are forced to work without money or proper food.

According to Human Rights Watch, since the start of the pandemic and the economic collapse, employers in Lebanon took to abandoning hundreds of workers outside consulates or embassies, often without money, passports, their belongings or flight tickets home. One employer even posted a Nigerian domestic worker for sale on a Facebook page used to trade secondhand items.

As this weeks grim video shows, migrant workers trapped in that system are increasingly vulnerable to physical abuse too.

We cannot let the rise in domestic violence, in all its forms, disappear from the agenda. Beyond Lebanon, it is an issue impacting homes in every country, in every town, and likely in every street.

This week, as right groups were warning of abuse of domestic workers in Lebanon, I also coincidentally stumbled upon Maid a searingly triggering miniseries about an impoverished American domestic worker and mother called Alex, who struggles to break free from her abusive partner, not even realising she is a victim of domestic violence.

Since it came out in October, it has sparked a slew of responses from many women who saw their own lockdown experiences played out in the storyline. We need to keep these conversations going.

To keep up to speed with all the latest opinions and comment, sign up to our free weekly Voices Dispatches newsletter by clicking here

There is no coronavirus pandemic in Maid but as I watched it in Covid isolation myself, I couldnt help thinking that during the pandemic, the tiny lifelines that end up saving Alex would have completely vanished, simply because she would have been increasingly isolated.

Domestic violence hotlines have reported that Covid isolation periods and the associated impacts of the pandemic continue to allow abusers to go to new extremes to exert control beyond the obvious, including lying about pandemic risk, making up lockdown rules, and controlling access to money and methods of communication with the outside world.

I have mainly spoken about women in this piece, but it is, of course, not exclusively something women face. It is often more taboo to speak about when men are the victims and survivors of this kind of abuse. Now more than ever, we need to keep speaking out about all forms of violence in the home and the impact the pandemic continues to have from emotionally abused mothers in the US to modern slavery in Lebanon.

Millions of workers quit their jobs, particularly low-wage ones – Amsterdam News

Posted: at 4:12 pm

The U.S. Department of Labor announced this week that 4.5 million Americans quit their jobs in November. Job openings, however, have decreased from 10.6 million to 11.1 million.

That number is still a record high.

However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this could be looked at from a positive perspective.

Large numbers of hires and separations occur every month throughout the business cycle. Net employment change results from the relationship between hires and separations, read the bureaus report. When the number of hires exceeds the number of separations, employment rises, even if the hires level is steady or declining. Conversely, when the number of hires is less than the number of separations, employment declines, even if the hires level is steady or rising.

In December, One Fair Wage (a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of tipped restaurant workers), warned of severe disruptions when dining out during the holidays with workers not willing to risk their lives due to the easily transmissible Omicron variant of the coronavirus. The organization said workers arent willing to risk their lives for tips.

Hundreds of thousands of service workers across the state of New York are fed up with the low wages and poor working conditions in the restaurant industry, including the subminimum wage for tipped workers that persists in New York, which is a direct legacy of slavery, stated Saru Jayaraman, president of One Fair Wage. The industry is in crisis. Unless wages go up immediately statewide, thousands of workers will continue to organize and many more will continue to leave.

A lot of this ire could be directed to Albany. New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul has touted her experience as a former tipped worker and called for the elimination of subminimum wage for those kinds of employees.

According to Jayaraman, the ball is in her court. She has the power to do so right now, before the end of the year, through a simple executive action, Jayaraman said.

Michael Fuquay, owner of the Queensboro and leader in RAISE High Road Restaurant, said,

Long before I owned a restaurant, I worked in a restaurant as a busboy, dishwasher, bartender, server. I think its important for us to have a kind of industry that good people want to stay in.

With low wages, people dont feel there is a future. We as an industry have to change to be the best we can be. Were trying to make that a reality as much as we can here at The Queensboro.

One Fair Wages own report, titled Closed Due to Low Wages: The Ongoing Exodus of Workers From the NY Restaurant Industry & The Looming Impact on Consumers, showed that since December 2019, New York State made up 12% of all restaurant workers who left the industry with a 18% overall decline in the overall workforce of any U.S. state or territory. The report stated as of May 2021, 53% of all restaurant workers still in the industry planned on leaving.

And job shortages arent only found in the restaurant industry. According to Pew Charitable Trusts, Missouris social services are in dire straits.

Communications Workers of America Local 6355 officials told Pew that the states child welfare workers are being assigned as many as 50 cases, which is double the normal amount. Citizens with questions regarding public assistance are on hold for hours before speaking with a worker.

Wealthy white men are still the power brokers in America | PennLive letters – pennlive.com

Posted: at 4:12 pm

Americas two-fold original sin began when the white plague, our European ancestors, first set foot on the North American continent. Beginning with the settlements of Jamestown in Virginia, and the Bay Colony in Massachusetts, it was open season on the tribes inhabiting this land for more than 10,000 years.

Current archaeological evidence suggests that up to 70 million original people perished between 1604 and the late 1800s. Thats quite a record for a civilized, Christian society. But thats only half of our national original sin. The other half, of course, was slavery.

In less than one generation (1604-1619), our European Christian ancestors systematically murdered, poisoned (smallpox) and starved one native culture, and enslaved another.

The same brutal forces of greed and exploitation that shaped early American policies are still present in American government today. Although America never had a king or a royal blood-line, we have always had a ruling aristocracy of land owners, bankers and entrepreneurs.

American government today reflects those early colonial traits with the aristocracy of corporate titans and scheming banksters enslaving the entire working class of America.

Todays workers are no more than indentured slaves to the wealthy bankers and corporations that refuse to pay a living wage. It is far easier to steal from the working masses when our government is owned by the aristocracy (fascism defined).

Our Black brothers and sisters knew more than 400 years ago that the laziest people in nascent America were wealthy white men. The more things change, the more things remain the same.

Peter Mazurkiewicz, Beaver Springs, Pa.

Why Molly-Mae Hague needs to learn about the disabled and chronically ill’s notion of crip time – Screen Shot

Posted: at 4:12 pm

Last month, British MPs rejected plans for a 1p per garment fashion tax albeit our climate crisis. At the same time, a Missguided 1 bikini appeared on the marketsomething that should be beyond concerning for everyone. The U.K. has the highest consumption of fast fashion in the whole of Europe, with over a million tonnes of clothing ending up in landfills each year. So how much power do we as consumers really have when it comes to sustainability and why is this discussion still going on?

The swimsuit sold out promptly, with 1,000 bikinis dropping everyday on the brands website, which further raises the question of how it is possible to produce and retail an entire set for just 1, free delivery included. Missguided presented an official statement claiming the production cost was of a higher value to the retail cost, and that the bikini was a gift to their customers, in the name of empowering women to look and feel good without breaking the bank. Interestingly enough, 78 percent of the brands employees are female, yet, they are a 46 percent median wage gap between men and women. The brand excuses itself on its website by claiming that this is due to having more women than men in lower paid positions, and fewer in higher ones. The lower paid positions include the factory ones, where workers often make as little as 3.50 an hourcontrasting with the U.K.s minimum wage of 7.83 for over 25s.

Despite being one of the U.K.s leading retail brands, according to the statistics conducted by the House of Commons, Missguided is also the least environmentally friendly, rejecting the use of recycled or organic materials in their products, clearly avoiding the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) programme as well as the sustainable clothing action plan. The government has the most power when it comes to regulating fast fashion, and yet, British MPs have rejected numerous regulations on the industry.

Many of these dismissals include the 1p per item tax to raise 35 million for clothing collection and sorting, the ban on incinerating or landfilling unsold stock, and even making a law requiring brands to publically release a modern slavery statement. In addition to this, the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has also urged to put lessons on designing, creating and repairing clothing into the school curriculum, as a means to end the era of disposable clothing as well as for the MPs to explore a sharing economy in which hiring and swapping would replace purchasing. The failure to implement these rules and regulations results in the continuation of unsustainable, disposable mass production, which ultimately affects the environmental crisis even further.

Marketing alone has so much power in influencing what the consumer chooses to buy, and fast fashion brands know this. The infamous swimsuit was advertised by last years Love Island contestant Ellie Brown, and being the official fashion sponsor of Love Island 2018, Missguided saw a 40 percent increase in sales. This year, another fast fashion brand, I Saw It First, secured a spot as the shows official fashion partner, spending around 2 million on the partnership. With over 4.2 million viewers of Love Islands first episode alone (57 percent appear to be 16-34 years old) the show has the ability to reach a huge number of potential consumers, and yet, it still decides to go for unethical brands.

Similarly, Emily Ratajkowski has recently launched a collection with Boohoo owned Nasty Gal, a brand known to be criticised for their mistreatment of workers while Kylie Jenner advertises for knock-off brand Fashion Nova via her Instagram with over 139.5 million followers. Celebrities and influencers make a conscious choice to promote these brands and in an age where Instagram seems to dictate all new trends, the choices they make allow us to feel a sense of relatability that we, too, can afford to dress like one of the Jenners. Although there is nothing wrong with that idea, influencers should also make a deliberate choice to promote more sustainable alternatives to their followers.

While it is the consumer who creates a demand for fast fashion, its unfair to entirely blame the consumer for the harmful environmental impacts or unethical working conditions of the industry. Of course, its true that spending 1 on a bikini could seem immensely appealing, but it is important to consider not only the impact this product will have on our planet, but also how the people who made it are affected by such low prices.

Affordable clothing is not only appealing but is essential too, and we consumers can help so much by simply buying less, shopping vintage or seeking other sustainable alternatives. Until the government or the brands alone begin regulating their carbon footprint, perhaps those with a platform should consider twice before encouraging impulse buying. Just putting it out there. In addition, Missguided has now changed the price of the bikini from 1 to 5a feeble attempt at clearing their conscience or is selling a swimsuit for a literal pound not making enough profit? Either way, nice try.

Leftists completely lose it after Aaron Rodgers says Ayn …

Posted: at 4:11 pm

Aaron Rodgers superstar quarterback of the Green Bay Packers continues to cause fits among leftists far and wide.

From the moment he called out hypocrite politicians who don't obey their own COVID-19 mandates a year ago to his more recent takedowns of the "woke mob" and "cancel culture" particularly with regard to vaccines and his revelation that he consulted with podcaster Joe Rogan for COVID-19 treatment after contracting the virus a few months ago, the free-thinking Rodgers has been rising fast on the left's most-hated list.

And on Monday night, he gave them another reason to froth at the mouth.

Rodgers was a guest on Monday Night Football's "ManningCast" during which brothers and ex-NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning discuss the game at hand and the subject of what Rodgers reads came up.

The quarterback, who led the Packers to the top NFC playoff position with their Sunday win over the Minnesota Vikings, told the Manning brothers he reads "a lot of French poetry" and then pointed at a bookshelf behind him and said he's "got 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand over here."

Rand and particularly "Atlas Shrugged" increasingly over the last decade or so have become favorite targets of the militant left, who say the author and her famous book espouse a me-first ideology. But fans counter that Rand's writings inspire and uphold individual freedom.

And just like clockwork, leftists jumped all over Rodgers for what's on his reading list.

Philadelphia Inquirer sports columnist Marcus Hayes appeared to lead the charge as he mocked the QB:

The Palmer Report offered the following brutal take:

Others followed suit in bashing the quarterback:

But not every observer agreed with the left-wing talking points.

Who is John Galt ? | Opinion | murrayledger.com – Murray Ledger and Times

Posted: at 4:11 pm

Being without cable and internet for several days gave me the opportunity to dust off some of my old DVDs and watch them. Three were parts I, II and III of Atlas Shrugged, based on Ayn Rands seminal 1957 novel. Rand was born Alissa Rosenbaum in St. Petersburg, Russia on Feb. 2, 1905, a mere 11 days after the infamous Bloody Sunday massacre of Jan. 22, 1905. Her father was a pharmacist and she grew up in a middle-class Jewish family. After the Communists came to power in November 1917, they confiscated her fathers business and the family fled to the Crimea, many miles to the south.

She emigrated to the United States in 1926 when she was 21 years old, changed her name to Ayn Rand and set out for Hollywood. Her most well-known works are We the Living (1936), The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957). So-called professional literary critics did not like her books, but they were popular with the public, sold thousands of copies and remain in print today. Ayn Rand was both a novelist (a writer of fiction) and a political and economic theorist; she has been aptly called a philosophical novelist.

Having seen her family and society destroyed by Communist collectivism and terror, it is not surprising that she strenuously opposed them and advocated individualism and its economic manifestation, capitalism. Neither is it surprising that she thought the best place to find these virtues was the United States. And, likewise, it is not surprising that, when she saw those virtues under attack in the United States, she defended them with her powerful pen.

Marx and Lenin divided the world into two groups: (1) the bourgeoisie were the industrial and commercial owners and managers, few in number but great in power; and (2) the proletariat were the workers and farmers, great in number but weak in power. The solution was for the proletariat to rise up in a great revolution, overthrow and destroy the bourgeoisie and establish a dictatorship of the proletariat that governed by the motto, From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

Rand anticipated and then recognized the disastrous consequences of the poverty, tyranny and social disintegration the communist ideology created where it was implemented and was very alarmed by the collectivism she saw progressivism creating in America. She saw two groups one small, one large. The first was the people who provide the motor of the world, ... those who produce the goods and ideas that keep the society going, be they industrialists, engineers, artists, scientists, or philosophers that is, the creative individualists. The second was everyone else.

The latter permit, and even demand, the suppression of freedom because they do not value it because they hate the fact that liberty allows some to achieve things others cannot, thereby violating the collectivist ethos of equity. It is not the military-industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned us about but the alliance between the industrial, academic, entertainment, mass media and political institutions which endlessly attack like stinger bees those who provide the motor of the world with so many rules, regulations, taxes and fees in the name of first one and then another silly cause that the movers and shakers simply quit and disappear, thereby depriving society of the benefits of their work.

The rest are unable or unwilling to engage in creative and productive labor, so the economy collapses, money becomes worthless because there is nothing to buy with it and society degenerates into roving gangs of lawless thugs.

If Ayn Rand could write like this in the 1950s, we can only imagine what she would think of our society, our economy and our politics today. If she, by a miracle, were alive today, she would have seen the Soviet Union collapse, she would have seen China discard the failure of rigid communism in favor of authoritarian mercantilism, she would have seen the failure of the clown regime in North Korea and she would have seen Fidel Castro destroy Cuba and Hugo Chavez destroy Venezuela all examples of collectivism.

Then she would say, Have you Americans completely lost your minds? Have you gone crazy? Why do you want to go down this awful road?

If you want to know who John Galt is, read the 1,168-page book or watch the movies on DVD or by streaming them from YouTube or Prime Video. Itll be time well spent.

Wall Street is looking at Fed and the virus the wrong way, analyst says – MarketWatch

Posted: at 4:11 pm

Its a Fed day of sorts, with minutes of the last Federal Open Market Committee the one where they doubled the pace of the taper and released a new dot plot set for release.

George Saravelos, global head of currency research at Deutsche Bank, says the market is too focused on dots, which get to the question of how much the Federal Reserve lifts interest rates this year. He says the market instead should be focused on the balance sheet, which has more than doubled in two years, to an end-of-year reading of $8.76 trillion.

How quickly the Fed decides to unwind it will have a big bearing on how financial conditions tighten, says Saravelos. A rapid QE unwind would be worse for long-end bonds, EM and equities and potentially slow down the hiking cycle. A very slow unwind would keep long-end yields contained but require more interest rate hikes, in turn with a bigger impact on the [U.S. dollar].

Saravelos also says the market might be misreading the impact of the omicron coronavirus variant by focusing too much on how the U.S. and Europe are responding, and not enough on China. In the worlds biggest port, Ningbo, theres a partial lockdown. We highlighted signs of an easing in supply bottlenecks last month, but some benchmark container indices are making new record highs again. Chinas persistence and success in containing omicron over the new few weeks will be critical for the supply side of goods in 2022, he says.

Another point with respect to omicron is the impact on supply of labor. In London, for instance, nearly 8% has COVID and is stuck at home. The real freedom day, Saravelos says, is when the isolation period is zero, not five days.

ADP reported a big 807,000 pop in private-sector payrolls in December. At 2 p.m., the minutes from the FOMCs last meeting will be released.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention amended its new five-day isolation guidance but didnt add a testing requirement. U.S. President Joe Biden doubled the order for the Pfizer PFE, +1.60% pill treatment Paxlovid, as French President Emmanuel Macron said his governments strategy was to piss off the unvaccinated. Hong Kong banned flights from the U.S. and seven other countries.

A new coronavirus variant has been found in France that could possibly be more transmissible than the omicron variant.

Beyond Meat BYND, +2.18% shares surged in the premarket, after the company said its plant-based, fried chicken product is coming to Yum Brands YUM, -1.15% KFC locations in the U.S. next week.

Sony SONY, +0.97% jumped in Tokyo trade, after it announced a new electric-vehicle unit and rolled out a prototype sport-utility vehicle.

Citi hiked its year-end S&P 500 SPX, -0.41% price target to 5,100 from 4,900.

U.S. stock futures ES00, -0.01% NQ00, -0.07% were a bit weaker before the Fed minutes.

After a 17 basis point surge over two days, the yield on the 10-year Treasury TMUBMUSD10Y, 1.767% edged back to 1.65%.

Here’s Aaron Rodgers’ strong response to one NFL MVP voter – Packers Wire

Posted: at 4:11 pm

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded to Pro Football Weeklys Hub Arkush, who as one of the 50 voters for the Associated Press said he wouldnt be voting for Rodgers because of his actions this offseason and his personal opinion of the Packers quarterback.

Heres the full quote from Rodgers that opened Wednesdays media availability:

I think hes a bum. I think hes an absolute bum. He doesnt know me. I dont know who he is. Nobody knew who he was, probably, until yesterdays comments. I mean, and I listened to the comments, but to say he had his mind made up in the summertime, in the offseason, that I have zero chance of winning MVP, in my opinion, should exclude future votes. His problem isnt with me being a bad guy or the biggest jerk in the league, because he doesnt know me. Doesnt know me. Doesnt know anything about me. Ive never met him, Ive never had lunch with him, Ive never had an interview with him. His problem is Im not vaccinated. So if he wants to go on a crusade and collude and come up with an extra letter to put on the award just for this season, and make it the Most Valuable Vaccinated Player, then he should do that. But hes a bum. And Im not going to waste any time thinking about that stuff. He has no idea who I am. Hes never talked to me in his life, but its unfortunate that those sentiments its surprising, that he would even say that, to be honest. But yeah, I know this was possible, I talked about it on (Pat) McAfee weeks ago. But crazy.

Rodgers also had this to say:

Like I recommended the book that I recently read, you can guess how many you know whats I give about that subject. Ive enjoyed immensely my time with Pat, I feel like it gives an insight into my personality and whats important to me. We talk about a lot of football, we talk about some life stuff, life lessons, learning, mistakes, failures, positivity, manifestations, things that are important to me. I enjoy that show, just like I enjoyed working with Jason for so many years. Those opportunities gave me windows to let people in, to let people see the kind of person I am, so people wouldnt think Im the biggest jerk in the NFL. But theres obviously a faction, based on the response when I tested positive, that want to demonize me for my decision to be unvaccinated and want to adjust facts around that. Any time something comes up with me, me mentioning the largest book on my bookshelf, Atlas Shrugged, triggers people. Thats the environment were living in. There is not room for dissenting opinions or individual freedoms or informed consent ideas or people to have a different view than you. Im someone who has an allergy to the mRNA vaccinations. Thats not even good enough to have a question about things. Pat joked about it on the show a while back, I knew he was serious. I think we were both serious at the time. Obviously, Ive made it a little more difficult by the way Ive played the last six weeks. I think the MVP should be about the most valuable player on the team. A lot of times it goes to the best player on the best team. And were the best team. So, if voters want to use the offseason or dont like my stance being unvaccinated, thats their prerogative, I dont think its right, but thats their prerogative.

Coach Matt LaFleur defended Rodgers and the MVP vote earlier on Wednesday.

Amended legislation is the only solution to ban online gambling, says Ramadoss – The Hindu

Posted: at 4:11 pm

PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Friday said an amended legislation to ban online gambling was the only solution, and urged the State government to bring in an ordinance immediately and pass a legislation in the next Assembly session in March.

In a statement, he welcomed Chief Minister M K Stalins announcement in the Assembly that the State government would soon put an end to online gambling, but pointed out that the current approach wouldnt fetch the desired results.

The Chief Minister has said the State government has gone on appeal in the Supreme Court against a Madras High Court order quashing the law enacted to ban online gambling by the previous AIADMK regime, and the hearing is going on, and soon they will put an end to online gambling, Mr. Ramadoss said. However, he said history shows that Supreme Court verdict wont put a full stop to online gambling.

A lot of State governments have enacted laws against online gambling and on appeals in at least in 7 cases, the Supreme Court has ruled that such laws are invalid. Even in 2016, Supreme Court has ruled against the Tamil Nadu government on the issue, Mr. Ramadoss said.

The main reason is that the Supreme Court has accepted the argument that it is a game of skill. The enactment passed by the Tamil Nadu government last year banning online gambling did not have strong points to prove that these are games of chance and not games of skill, he said.

There have been no signs of the Supreme Court taking the appeal for hearing. Till such time as a judgement is passed, we cannot allow people to lose money and end their lives by suicide, Mr. Ramadoss said while calling for the amended legislation.

NFL Week 18 Prop Bets: Navigating Inactives, Incentives, and More – On Tap Sports Net

Posted: at 4:11 pm

Navigating the final week of the NFL regular season is always one of the most difficult things as a gambler. Understanding all of the playoff implications and scenarios, along with whos in and whos resting, makes the final week chaotic and complicating. Surely, we are going to see some unsuspecting names score touchdowns today. Then, of course, we have to consider the incentives. Players have incentives baked into their deals with bonuses they can receive for reaching certain statistical markers.

With that said, there are a few potential advantageous situations. Get sportsbook apps and thumbs ready. Lets make this a profitable final week of the season.

Although the Falcons are eliminated from the playoffs and playing a meaningless game, its not useless for everyone. Pitts has had a remarkable rookie season. Last week, he became the only rookie tight end in NFL history with at least 60 receptions and 900 receiving yards. With one game left in the balance, Pitts has a chance to break Mike Ditkas record set in 1961 for most receiving yards by a rookie tight end. He needs 59 yards. Iron Mike achieved the feat in only 14 games, but this is still noteworthy and a tremendous accomplishment.

DraftKings is running a promotional prop where Pitts must only reach his needed yardage to cash the ticket. However, I will also be playing the over on his normal receiving yardage prop up to 64.5 for a better payout with less juice attached. Additionally, I would consider placing a wager on Pitts to score an anytime touchdown.

Starting with the matchup, the New York Giants have allowed over 49 receiving yards per game to opposing tight ends this season. Bates has established himself as the number one tight end option for the Washington Football team over the last few weeks. Hes gone over this number in four of his last five games, including each of the last three.

Ready for another incentive? Lockett needs two touchdowns to get a $1.2 million incentivized bonus. The Arizona Cardinals have a solid secondary, but Lockett was able to catch four passes for 115 yards the last time these two teams met. Lockett also had a huge game in Week 17 last year, catching 12 passes for 90 yards and two scores.

Im willing to sprinkle a little money on him scoring an anytime touchdown as well, but I think Russell Wilson will pepper him with targets today.
