Cyberpunk, The Witcher Look Fantastic Tilt-Shifted – Kotaku Australia

Flurdeh is a YouTube channel that takes video games and applies a tilt-shift effect to them, turning their bristling 3D worlds into cute little dioramas.
Youll notice a few similarities among all of them, like the sped-up animations and the reduced framerate, both decisions that really help sell the idea that these videos have more in common with stop-motion animation than with cutting-edge video game clips.
Here, for example, is Cyberpunk, with its various locations shrunk down and inhabitants waddling around going about their daily lives as if they were little toys.
And heres Skyrim, looking more like a D&D game from the distant future than a 2012 video game:
Heres The Witcher 3, where Ciris workout at 1:02 is maybe the coolest thing youll see in any of these videos:
And finally, heres Fallout: New Vegas, showing that its road textures havent aged anywhere near as well as Skyrims rolling hills:
If you like these there are more at their YouTube channel, for games like Horizon and BioShock Infinite, along with loads of other videos celebrating just how pretty video games can be.
Thanks Kaylee!

Cyberpunk 2077s Multiplayer Component Is Still Alive, As Suggested by Datamine – Appuals
Posted: at 12:01 pm
Its been more than just a few months since weve seen Cyberpunk 2077 release, and it quickly crashed and burned before everyones eyes. The game, while a roaring success in terms of pre-orders and overall sold copies, created a rift between the industry darlings CD Projekt RED and the general mainstream gaming audience. The latter accused (rightfully so) CD Projekt RED of overpromising and overhyping Cyberpunk 2077 to no end even if the game is in no way, shape or form ready for shipping yet. This decision to release early may have ended the developers good standing with the general public for good.
That said, for the time being, it would seem that CD Projekt RED is still fully committed to having Cyberpunk 2077 in a proper working state, free from the many bugs and glitches that have plagued it since its inception, as well as make up for all the many broken promises they shipped the game with. The latest update for the game, version 1.3, was part of the studios efforts. Its also the biggest update ever released, totaling 40GB on PC and adding key features like zoomed-out mini maps and allowing for reallocation of Perk points. A few DLC cosmetics were also part of the update, including tw new jackets and a brand-new car.
However, as the title suggests, 1.3 did not only add these things but also kept the flame alive for a possible multiplayer component for Cyberpunk 2077. First highlighted by Tyler McVicker, while it was notable that version 1.3 added a ton of changes to Cyberpunks janky engine, some lines relating to multiplayer gyms were also found in the update. In addition to this, various lines relating to possible expansions were there as well.
Those whove been following Cyberpunk 2077 for a while now will know that CD Projekt RED was planning a multiplayer component for the game, one thats separate from the single-player experience in order to assuage everyones fears of microtransactions within the game. However, it was reconsidered after the game was blown wide open by the many bugs, glitches and missing features that players noticed for Cyberpunk 2077. This latest update points to the opposite, however, and it remains to be seen if we will see a Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer component some time in the future.

Elliott: Serena Williams’ coach on recovery from her latest injury: ‘It’s going to work out’ – Yahoo News
Posted: at 12:01 pm
Serena Williams plays a return during a match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon in June. Williams will not compete in the U.S. Open because of a hamstring injury. (Kristy Wigglesworth / Associated Press)
In the end, it wont really matter if Serena Williams wins another Grand Slam singles title and matches Margaret Courts recognized record of 24.
Williams, who spent part of her childhood playing on public tennis courts in Compton alongside her sister Venus, has won so many championships so decisively and on so many surfaces that her superiority is beyond dispute. Shes chasing a number, not immortality. She earned immortality long ago, when her power game allowed her to dominate the court and redefine what womens tennis could be.
The same drive that propelled her to the pinnacle of the sport has kept her going when her body balks under stress and strain, as it has done with sadly increasing frequency.
A hamstring injury she suffered at Wimbledon led her to withdraw from the U.S. Open, which will begin Monday in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Her thigh was heavily taped during the French Open, where she lost in the round of 16, and she had to retire during the first set of her first-round match at Wimbledon after slipping and injuring her hamstring. It has become a familiar and frustrating refrain for Williams, who will turn 40 on Sept. 26.
Its been a tough year because out of the four Grand Slams, shes been able to play only the Australian Open, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou said in a phone interview. First of all, shes sad because its a Grand Slam, and second its the home Grand Slam. So, two main reasons for being sad.
For a long while, Williams did well at fending off times inevitable toll. She pulled off a near miracle to reach the finals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2018, and again in 2019 after enduring a perilous 2017 pregnancy that was complicated by a caesarean section and blood clots. She reached the semifinals of the Australian Open this year, where she lost to eventual champion Naomi Osaka.
But then came the injuries and the uncertainty over when she will return, much less whether she can return to top form. Its no consolation, but shes not alone in facing medical issues that have limited her match play: Roger Federer, newly 40, said two weeks ago he would need a third surgery on his right knee and will be out of tennis for many months. Rafael Nadal, a relatively spritely 35, withdrew from the U.S. Open because of a chronic foot problem.
Story continues
Without them, the bright lights of New York will be undeniably dimmer. Each time they play is an occasion to be celebrated. Each time they withdraw or retire is a wish unfulfilled.
Hopefully she goes out on her terms, retired tennis star John McEnroe, now an ESPN commentator, said during a conference call held before Williams' withdrawal from the Open. Either way, she's the greatest female player in my book that has ever played, one of the greatest athletes, period, that's ever played. I don't think she's got to worry about whether she wins another one. But I'm sure that she would love to be able to do that, if possible.
Mouratoglou said the calendar didnt allow Williams enough time to heal and prepare for the Open after she slightly tore her hamstring at Wimbledon, and a setback cost her two additional weeks of recovery time. They were reluctant to push her for fear of doing long-term damage.
Serena Williams waves as she leaves the court after retiring from the women's singles first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon in London on June 29. (Kirsty Wigglesworth / Associated Press)
He says he believes shes best left alone for now to adjust to missing the Open and accepting that her body will no longer obey her commands. First of all, it is going to work out. We know its just a question of weeks, he said. We know also that if the U.S. Open would take place maybe three weeks later, she would be ready. So its just a question of time, so no particular stress there.
The only question is whats next, and in order to answer that question I think its important to digest what just happened because its still a big shock and a disappointment for her, and we decided that well take a bit of time and within the next month, we will sit down again and discuss about the future.
That could put the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, which was rescheduled for Oct. 4-17, on her radar. For the moment all the options are possible, Mouratoglou said. We have to just know what are the goals for the future and then, when we know what the goals are, we can go with a plan. Without a goal we cannot make a plan.
He acknowledged that he didnt ask her if those goals include returning to elite level play. Again, we didnt speak about it, so its difficult for me to answer that question, he said. We didnt discuss it because we had a plan, and that was to play this U.S. Open, and we were focusing on that. And then we just discussed playing it or not and we took the decision.
And again, you know, to think about the future, whether its with or without tennis, I dont know, she needs to again digest and take some distance with tennis to think right. She needs that time. She will get that time, and then well talk.
McEnroe, who retired from tour singles play at 33, marveled at Williams longevity but wondered if she has experienced the duress he felt late in his career. I noticed at least with myself that the older I got in a way I felt more pressure and felt like my days were numbered. It ended up, like, hurting me as opposed to that experience you can use to your advantage, he said.
It seems that that wasn't an issue until maybe Serena came back from having her child, maybe sensing she wasn't going to have a lot of opportunities. Even though she's had four [Slam final berths], she wasn't able to play to the level that she normally plays at. Why that was, that's difficult to say.
Given the depth on the womens tour which is loaded with players who consider her an idol its difficult to imagine Williams will win another Slam singles title. All good fortune to her while she chases her dreams, but she should know she doesnt have to chase a record to be considered the greatest in the game. Shes already there, proudly, fiercely, immovably.

Review: ‘Shang-Chi’ is another shrink-wrapped Disney product – AZ Big Media
Posted: at 12:01 pm
You are a product of all who came before you, a wise woman tells Shang-Chi in the movies trailer, and she doesnt know how right she is: Shang-Chi is another shrink-wrapped Disney product, and it could only exist after a busload of white superheroes got their turn first. On the outside, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a Marvel-tinged ode to wuxia, the enduring Chinese subgenre of martial arts fantasybut on the inside, its just another compromise between underrepresented talent and overpaid producers.
The closest Shang-Chi gets to the movies its pretending to honor is the casting of Tony Leung, frequent muse of Wong Kar-wai and one of the greatest actors alive. He plays Wenwu, otherwise known as the Mandarinno, not Iron Man 3s fakeout villain, the real one this timean immortal warlord whos spent thousands of years conquering everything he pleases. He gains his immortality from ten magical rings that he wears like bracelets, a fact he doesnt seem to mind sharing with the world, given that he names his army the Ten Rings. Eventually, he has a sonShang-Chi himselfwho he trains to take his place, but Shang-Chi elects to abscond to the U.S. and live the American dream: working as a valet with Awkwafina.
READ ALSO: 4 upcoming Marvel movie releases to watch in 2021
The film introduces us to Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) at this stage in his life. Hes happy shooting the breeze with his best friend Katy (Awkwafina), but their lives are thrown into chaos when the Ten Rings comes looking for Shang-Chi, and Katy refuses to leave his side. Their journey kicks off with a crackerjack action sequence on a moving bus, where both Katy and the audience get to see Shang-Chis martial arts prowess for the first time. Simu Liu, who worked as a stuntman before finding success as an actor, brings real, physical weight to the action, throwing his body around with visible but practiced exertion. The fighting is impressive in general, thanks in part to the choreography of Brad Allen, a veteran Jackie Chan choreographer who died weeks before Shang-Chis release. His work features plenty of clever moves thatll ingrain themselves firmly in the popular imagination. The camera does its best to capture it all, swiveling around the action on a pre-visualized path, but Shang-Chi never comes close to the intricately edited action of authentic wuxia films. The cinematographer and editors are a little out of their depth here, which is clearer than ever when they slot into their comfort zones for a third-act CGI slugfest. The more planning an action scene requires, the less creative itll be.
The action descends into Marvels business-as-usual as the film progresses, but the screenplay is choked up in a suit and tie from the start. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is as lazily written as these things get. The worst offender is the protagonists case of Captain Marvel syndrome: he doesnt have a real arc. From the moment we meet Shang-Chi, hes a Chosen One with a heart of gold, having chosen to leave his vices behind before the story even started. His path to heroism is a mere matter of being The Guy at The Right Time. The screenplayonce again overfocused on the retrieval of conflict-solving artifactsis replete with decisions that rob us of chances to get to know the characters better. Wenwu gets an effective, small-scale rationale for his villainy, but Shang-Chi and Katy are stock characters from head to toe. This is another adventure of the (initially) reluctant hero and his plucky comic relief. And they definitely dont have feelings for each other.
The most distinctive element of Shang-Chi is its score. Director Daniel Cretton made the shrewd choice to collaborate with composer Joel P. West, who scored Crettons infinitely smaller (and highly recommended) debut, Short Term 12. The result is a score that, like Short Term 12s, buries deeper into a single motif over time, rejecting epic bombast in favor of subtle melodic developments. Its beautiful, and it makes you wish the rest of the film followed suit. The Asian myths that Shang-Chi draws from have incredible storytelling potential. But Disney doesnt really draw from myths; it literalizes them, flattening bits and pieces into command-findable lore for their latest property. Marvel Studios doesnt have a sense of the reciprocal interplay between myth and culture. It does, however, know how to appropriate cultures to build its own. The cast and crew of Shang-Chi might have put genuine care into the movie, but the business directive of expanding the Marvel kingdom is the supreme creative force.

Space Travel: What It Takes for a Safe Journey to Mars – Socialpost
Posted: at 12:00 pm
Staying in space for months or years has its consequences: muscle dwindles, radiation damages cells and Weightlessness should hit the brain. This is the long journey to Mars Not good conditions. In a study in Space Weather, Yuri Shprits and his team explain how the risks It can be minimized at least.
The journey to Mars takes about nine months: it takes about a year and a half there and back. If one considers a research stay of several months on our neighbour, the expedition must still be below the time limit that Shprits and Co calculated for a relatively safe voyage. Only when the journey takes more than four years does the risk of radiation damage increase dramatically.
To this end, however, two other aspects must be taken into account: it is necessary to have good radiation protection on the spaceship, which protects the crew from charged particles and high-energy cosmic radiation. Flight timing also helps reduce health risks. The best way to start the mission is when the sun reaches its peak activity: the solar maximum. Then the powerful solar wind ensures that the most dangerous particles are shielded from other galaxies.
So space ships need good radiation protection. But scientists write that it should not be heavily shielded to prevent secondary radiation that could occur inside the aircraft.

With civilian space travel closer than ever, your dreams of exploring the vast reaches of the universe could be realized in your lifetimeproviding you have the money. The cost to hitch a ride on a SpaceX jaunt to the International Space Station in 2022 runs about $55 million. Commercial space travel tickets will probably be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for some time to come.
Fortunately, you can still make travel plans to see the stars thanks to these space-themed accommodations with prices that are very down to Earth.
If youre curious to know what it felt like to experience space in the cramped Apollo 11 vehicle that got us to the moon, look no further than this Airbnb lodging out of New Zealand. Guests can stay in a replica capsule that will bring you one small step closer to understanding life as a 1960s astronaut. It's located in the Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve at Pukaki Airport, and the single-bed ship has a clear Perspex roof, so you can fall asleep under the stars.
This tiny home offers a big advantage over other accommodationsthe outdoor bedroom lets guests stargaze amid a vast and private oasis. During the day, you can take in the view of nearby mountains and wildlife. Bonus: Its all solar-powered.
Fans of Star Trek can board a hotel room modeled after the USS Enterprise. Relax among some screen-accurate props and command consoles. Eagle-eyed guests may also spot some hidden Trek-themed surprises.
Guests have had nothing but raves for the Mission to Space Villa, which can accommodate up to 16 guests (each lowering the nightly cost) in different space-themed rooms. Youre only 20 minutes from Walt Disney World, but you wont need to travel far for entertainment. The villa has a bowling alley, a movie theater, and an arcade.
This unique theme takes a fantastical spaceship motif and plops it near the beach. Inside, port windows and space-age architecture lend the feel of extraterrestrial design, while very earthbound amenities like bicycles let you explore the ocean.
For a fully immersive Star Wars experience, look no further than this nine-bedroom galactic detour. Guests can enjoy themed rooms that capture the spirit of the Millennium Falcon, Hoth, or Cloud City. Best of all, youre just 15 minutes from Star Wars: Galaxys Edge at Walt Disney World.
This glamping option places guests into a kind of retro space age, with a tiny dome house beckoning visitors via a set of UFO-style steps. Inside, youll experience a fantastic view of the slightly alien terrain of Joshua Tree.
This modest cabin has a stealth featureit functions as a private observatory. Use the roll-top roof and sky deck to operate the telescope to catch a glimpse of the universe above.

Jeff Bezos and Richard Bransons shouldnt have worn those blue suits for space flight – heres why – indy100
Posted: at 12:00 pm
Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson saw their childhood dreams come true when they blasted themselves to the edge of space last month.
The billionaires hurtled to altitudes of more than 66 miles and 53 miles respectively during each of their historic trips up to the stars, with the Amazon founder describing his adventure as the best day ever.
Along with their broad grins the rivals wore similar blue jumpsuits for their missions, although Bezos topped his off with a cowboy hat while his British counterpart opted for a pair of shades.
And yet, while both journeys were a success for the entrepreneurs as well as their small crews, the two men apparently ran an unnecessary risk with their choice of uniform.
This is according to some of the worlds leading experts in space-travel safety who, in an interview with Bloomberg, pointed out that neither team wore the correct gear to shield them from rapid decompression outside the Earths atmosphere.
Pressure suits are required by NASA and other national space agencies to help protect passengers from fatal accidents.
And yet no such standards apply to private companies including Bezoss Blue Origin, Bransons Virgin Galactic, and Elon Musks SpaceX, which are all racing to get space tourism off the ground. This is because, in the US for example, Congress hasnt allowed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to set rules to protect passengers.
The reality is when you go to space, you dont dress with nice stuff, you dress with the right stuff, former European Space Agency official Tommaso Sgobba told the news site. Sgobba now serves as executive director of the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety, so he knows his stuff.
Although the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) carefully reviews all launch applications to ensure no mishap could harm the public on the ground or a passing plane, it focuses on the reliability of the spacecraft, not on the safety of the spacecrafts crew.
It is time, I believe, to update our human spaceflight regulatory framework, George Nield, who directed the FAAs office overseeing commercial launches from 2008 to 2018, told Bloomberg.
The commercial launch industry has grown exponentially in recent years, with the FAA overseeing the 400th such launch in May, the news site points out.
Most of these were geared towards expanding satellite networks and transporting other goods into space, but tourist flights look set to explode.
The FAA has published recommended practices for safety which private companies can follow. The agency also compels all crew members to sign a waiver before flying to confirm that they understand the spacecrafts risks and that it isnt certified by the government.
The US has seen 379 human-manned space flights since the early 1960s, four of which ended in fatal accidents, according to Nield.
In other words, Bezos may like his hat but, when it comes to space travel, its never good to be a cowboy.

Can space tourism make the world a greener place? | MyWalletHero – Motley Fool UK
Posted: at 12:00 pm

Share this page:
Space tourism is a hot topic these days, with Elon Musk and Richard Branson both venturing into space in recent months. But what exactly is space tourism? And could it help make our society greener and more sustainable? Well, maybe, but space tourism attracts a lot of criticism, too. Heres what you should know.
Space tourism essentially means travelling into space for fun rather than for scientific purposes. It gives people with no special training the opportunity to experience Earth from a whole new perspective. That said, theres nothing cheap about jetting into space. Tickets for Richard Bransons Virgin Galactic tours cost up to 180,000. So, right now, space tourism is pretty inaccessible for most people.
Is space tourism just about leisure, though? Not necessarily. Recreational space travel opens up new markets and investment opportunities for space technology, which is great news for startups and budding entrepreneurs. Could this technology make our world greener, though? Possibly, but we cant ignore the possible environmental impact of space travel, either.
Theres no clear answer to this question.
Rocket fuels can damage our atmosphere, for one thing. And, according to scientists, one recreational space flight could generate the same amount of pollution as a transatlantic flight. The cost of space tourism might be extortionate now, but in the long term, companies like Virgin Galactic aspire to fly into space several times per day.
So, if recreational space travel becomes popular, resulting in regular trips into space, the environment could be damaged in potentially irreversible ways.
Okay, so thats one side of the debate. But what about the possible benefits of recreational space travel could it make our world greener?
Maybe. According to Malcolm McPartlin, co-manager of the Aegon Global Sustainable Equity Fund, we should stop focusing on space tourism and instead look at the possible benefits of space technology. Specifically, we should focus on new satellite technology.
As McPartlin points out, nearly four billion people currently have no internet access. By improving satellite technology, internet access would become more accessible. As a result, people could live more efficiently and reduce their carbon footprint. Whats more, enhanced satellite tech makes it easier for countries to share knowledge and collaborate in the fight against climate change.
The result? Space travel creates fresh development opportunities for startups and companies moving into the satellite tech space. While space travel itself could be greener, space investment could have a positive impact on our society and our collective carbon footprint.
The upshot? Jetting off into space for fun may not be worth the high carbon footprint. However, just because space tourism attracts a lot of criticism doesnt mean we should forego space travel completely. Instead, it might be best to focus on the benefits of developing space technology, and how we can use space travel to build a more sustainable, eco-friendly society right here at home.
