15 of Irelands best-kept secrets that are a must-see this year – Irish Mirror
Posted: August 22, 2021 at 3:24 pm
As holidays abroad are becoming increasingly less likely to happen in the next few weeks, we take a look at all Ireland has to offer.
If you are planning a staycation this summer and feel like you have seen it all, this list of hidden attractions might just be for you.
Here is a list of 15 of Irelands best-kept secrets:
1.The Serpents Lair Inis Mor, otherwise known as 'The Wormhole.'
The original name for this mythical looking location is Poll na bPeist.
The sharp edges in the Serpents Lair in the Aran Islands looks as if it was cut using 21 st century machinery. However, the Wormhole was, in fact, formed naturally.
The natural swimming pool was home to the Red Bull Cliff Diving Series in 2017.
2.Bull Rock
This attraction is situated on the Beara Peninsula, Dursey Island in Cork.
Visitors cant get onto the island itself however, you can have a spin around it on a boat tour. You will also get to see Bull Rock Lighthouse and discover the story behind the movie like island.
3.Doon Fort Donegal
This unique fort is situated in the middle of Loghadoon, near Narin and Portnoo. The fort is believed to have belonged to the Breslins and then the OBoyles over its lifetime until it fell into disrepair.
Although the fort is located on a private island, the family rent boats to those who fancy a visit to this fantastic floating fort during the summer.
4.Caves of Keash Co. Sligo
This unique location with jaw-dropping views is believed to predate the Pyramids of Egypt by 500-800 years.
Geological inspections led experts to believe that early man used to live in the caves at Keash.
There are 17 caves to explore in total, making this visit well worth the trip.
5.Donegals secret waterfall
Hidden on the Slieve League peninsula in Donegal, this waterfall nestled between Killybegs and Kilcar is otherworldly.
It is important to be aware of tide times before visiting this hidden gem, and permission must be granted from the local farmer before you can enter.
6.Gougane Barra
Gougane Barra in Co. Cork has the ability to take your breath away with its stunning views and picturesque location.
The rugged mountains encapsulate the large valley and lake, rising over 370 metres, making this a must-see location.
7.Victors Way Indian Sculpture Park
The garden located in the Wicklow Mountains is a one-of-a-kind attraction.
Designed as a meditation garden for adults, Victor's Way discourages family trips with small children as they may disrupt the garden's serenity.
Visitors will enjoy many impressive sculptures immerging from the water as they walk through this relaxing sight.
8.Diamond Hill
Located in Galway, Diamond Hill is perfect for those who enjoy the great outdoors.
It is well worth the hour hike it takes to get there, with breathtaking views surrounding the hill.
Hiking enthusiasts can also take a second track that can take up to three hours to complete.
9.The heart-shaped lake
Located in the Tonelagee Mountains, if you fancy seeing this spectacular lake grab those hiking boots.
The hike can take up to two and a half hours, depending on your pace, but it is well worth it.
The lake snuggled into the Wicklow Mountains makes for a fantastic day out with lots more to see in the area.
10.Aghaigh an Aird or the Devils Chimney
Irelands highest waterfall is a truly hidden gem.
To see this spectacular location, you must complete a 45 minute slightly strenuous walk. However, this hidden waterfall is well worth the sacrifice.
11.The steps on Arranmore Island
Arranmore Island, Donegal, is an unbelievable sight. This remote island is located 5km off the Donegal coast.
The island can be explored by day, having a go at the rocky staircase built into the landscape. At night relax in one of the islands lively pubs and enjoy some traditional music.
12.Downpatrick Head
Close to Ballycastle village in Mayo, the magnificent Dun Briste sea stack is definitely a hidden gem.
Located off the coast of Mayo, this beautiful coastline location is perfect for a day trip and some fantastic photo opportunities.
13.Drimnagh Castle
Irelands only castle with an intact moat, Drimnagh Castle, is straight out of a fairy-tale.
Dated to 1215, the ancient castle occupied a Norman Knight, Hugo de Bernivale, in return for his familys help in the invasion of Ireland.
Steeped in history, this truly is one of Irelands best-kept secrets.
14.Leap Castle
Believed to be Irelands most haunted castle, Leap is located 6km from Roscrea in Coolderry.
According to legend, a lady in red wanders the castle with a silver blade after dark. It is believed that the woman gave birth to a baby while held captive by the OCarrolls. After the birth, the O'Carrolls killed the woman's baby, leaving her to lurk in the halls.
15.Spike Island
A short ferry ride from the village of Cobh in Cork Spike island played host to a Monastery, a 24-acre fortress and the largest convict depot in the world.
Considered to be Ireland's Alcatraz, Spike Island has a dark and interesting past.

Ready for another spin of Potter roulette as Brighton host Watford? – We Are Brighton
Posted: at 3:24 pm
During their 120 year existence, Brighton & Hove Albion have played Watford more than any other team. There have been more than 150 meetings between the clubs, which makes it fitting that this most familiar of foes provide the opposition as the Amex returns to full capacity for the first time in 18 months.
Both sides come into the match having tasted victory on the opening day of the campaign. For the Albion, that came at Burnley once Graham Potter had sobered up after 45 minutes of experimenting with a 4-1-4-1 formation featuring Pascal Gross at left back and Adam Webster at right back.
Having had three meaningless pre-season friendlies to test out this and any other whacky ideas that the Brighton manager might have formulated, it seemed ridiculous to start experimenting the first time that actual Premier League points were on the line. That is Potter for you.
Once he realised the error of his ways and reverted to a 3-4-1-2 and the radical concept of using players in their actual positions, Brighton were miles better in the second half and ended up walking away with a 2-1 win having gone into the interval 1-0 behind.
Watford meanwhile were busy picking up an impressive 3-2 win over an Aston Villa side who are many peoples dark horses for a top six finish this season.
Villa fans expect even better, believing that their 1996 Coca Cola Cup win makes them the biggest club in the country and that they therefore should be challenging for the title (and that Yves Bissouma would walk over broken glass to play for them if they put in a bid).
Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the Hornets bringing Villa down a peg or two last week. That result does though highlight that Watford at home may not be as straightforward a match as many Brighton fans are expecting.
Watford this seasonWatford are back in the Premier League after a one-season absence having finished as runners up in the Championship last season. Their instant return was not really a surprise as they should never have been relegated from the top flight in the first place.
Owners the Pozzo Family sack managers as frequently as Dominic Raab refuses to make important phone calls and whilst most of the time they tend to get it right (unlike the Foreign Secretary), their decision to part ways with Nigel Pearson when outside of the relegation zone with two matches left to play was utterly bizarre.
The Hornets ended up finishing in the bottom three under caretaker Hayden Mullins and they rattled through a further two bosses in 2020-21, Vladimir Ivic being replaced by former Spain international Xisco back in December.
As for this season, the aim of the game for Watford has to be survival first and foremost. Like most other top flight clubs, they have had a very quiet transfer window so far with the only big name arrival being Josh King on a free from Everton.
If Brighton have designs of finishing higher up the Premier League table this season, then Watford at home is exactly the sort of game they have to be winning. It is also exactly the sort of game they have always struggled in under Potter, so who knows what will happen?
Team newsAaron Connolly is available again after what Potter described as a personal issue. It was reported on the Thursday before the trip to Burnley that Connolly had thrown a hissy fit when it was revealed that he would not be in the starting XI at Turf Moor and so Potter decided to leave him at home completely, the latest example of an appalling attitude from a player who thinks he is miles better than he is.
Quite why Connolly is getting chance after chance after chance when the likes of Jurgen Locadia and Florin Andone were jettisoned after the first time they erred is another Potter mystery.
It also makes the treatment of Percy Tau appear pretty shoddy, Tau having waited two-and-a-half years to get to England only for it to look like he is being flogged to Egypt within six months after less than 100 minutes of Premier League football to prove himself.
Elsewhere, Joel Veltman remains out because of a Covid close contact and Danny Welbeck and Tariq Lamptey are injured. Last week proved that trying to second guess what Potter may do is a futile exercise, so we are not even going to try. Just please, for the love of God, play Gross in his actual position.
For Watford, King could make his Hornets debut after missing the win over Villa with a groin problem. Xisco will be without Juraj Kucka, Ozan Tufan, Joao Pedro and Nathaniel Chalobah.
Key battlesCentral to Watford beating Villa was right winger Ismaila Sarr, which is bad news when Brighton do not currently have a natural left back in first team contention.
Sarr gave Matt Targett such a torrid time at Vicarage Road that Dean Smith decided to put him out of his misery and haul him at half time. If a genuine, Premier League standard left back could not cope with the Senegalese wide man then how will one of Potters square-pegs-in-round holes manage?
This is why we again find ourselves contemplating a little visit to church on route to the Amex to pray that Gross is not at left back.
Solly March seems the best choice to fulfil the role of dealing with Sarr but he is much more comfortable going forward.
90 minutes against Sarr will be a real test of the defensive side of Marchs game and could go a long way towards deciding if the Albion make it two wins from two.
Recent formBrighton have been in good form over their past six matches, winning three and losing two. Those victories were not exactly routine either; Burnley is a tough place to go, Manchester City are the reigning champions who can buy their way to the title every season and The Leeds United are the biggest football club in the universe.
This though is the Albion paradox. Brighton play well and record better results against the stronger teams and struggle against the likes of Watford.
The Seagulls won only one game against a side in the bottom half of the table at the Amex last season when beating Newcastle United 3-0 in April so whilst recent form might look pleasant, form at home against fellow strugglers is ghastly.
Something of a mixed bag for the Hornets although once they won promotion via their 1-0 win over Milllllllllllllllll on April 24th, there was bugger all to play for as Norwich were already miles clear at the top leaving the the Championship title out of grasp.
Interestingly, Watford have won only one of their last four away matches and that came against a Canaries side with nothing to play for.
Defeats against Brentford, arch rivals Luton and a draw with Neil Warnocks Middlesbrough suggest that Watford struggle on the road potentially good news for Brighton.
Last time we metIt was February 2020 and Brighton were slap bang in the middle of that terrible winter run of two wins from 18 games which dragged them into the relegation battle when Watford came to the Amex.
Things nearly got even worse for Potter as the Hornets took a 1-0 lead through Abdoulaye Doucoure after a typical attempt at overplaying by the Albion went awry, Aaron Mooy (remember him?) lost possession and the visitors broke to score.
Brighton then had to rely on a 78th minute own goal from Adrian Mariappa to ensure they did not suffer an embarrassing home defeat, the Watford defender rather generously lashing home an Alireza Jahanbakhsh cross under no pressure as it finished 1-1.
A miserable night at the Amex but the WAB Team did at least have the comfort of having watched it through a blur of strong Belgian beer from a bar in Gent whilst on a stag do. Amongst the items lost that evening were a mobile phone, an expensive coat and a lot of mens dignity.
Brighton v Watford head-to-headThere have been 155 meetings between Brighton and Watford across 10 different competitions since 1904. The Albion lead the head-to-head with 45 wins, the Hornets have been victorious on 36 occasions and there have been 35 draws.
Part of the reason for the clubs being such regular foes is because Brighton and Watford drew each other for four consecutive seasons in the FA Cup during the 1920s, the odds of which are over nine million to one.
Often, these ties required replays which boots the number of FA Cup meetings between Seagulls and Hornets to 10. With it now being over 10 years since the Albion faced Watford in the FA Cup Gus Poyet He Who Must Not Be Named overseeing a shock 1-0 win at Vicarage Road in 2010-11 the law of averages suggests we will be meeting in the third round of the competition come January. Which will be nice.
A reason why Brighton will winConfidence should be running high amongst the Brighton squad following the 2-1 victory at Burnley and the manner it was delivered in. Potter has also learnt an important lesson within 45 minutes of the 2021-22 season, namely that he needs to use players in their actual positions.
A reason why Watford will winWatford might not win, but they probably will not lose either. Sheffield United. West Brom. Fulham. Burnley. Crystal Palace. Southampton. Wolves. Aston Villa. All came to the Amex last season and all left with something to show for their efforts.
Brighton v Watford bettingThe bookies have Brighton as odds-on favourites to beat Watford, which seems about as good value as the 37 billion spent on a Track & Trace app which did not actually work.
Last seasons record against clubs in the bottom half of the table at the Amex suggests a draw is likely, available at a best priced 13/5.
In terms of player betting, Neal Maupay started last season with a bang and his goals tend to come in fits and starts. It would not be a surprise to see him on target again following his equaliser at Turf Moor and he can be found at 28/17 to score anytime.
Tau at 11/5 is probably one to avoid whilst we have unfortunately been unable to find a market on what time Connolly is filmed getting into a fight in Shoosh! in the early hours of Sunday morning.
PredictionsPrediction of actual score: Brighton 1-1 WatfordPrediction of xG score: Watford 1.2 6.7 BrightonPrediction of first drunk meltdown: 3.01pm
(We predicted 3.05pm for the first drunken meltdown at Burnley but even that proved to be too conservative as it took James Tarkowski less than three minutes to give the Clarets the lead).

What is the High Rollers Room? Here’s which ‘Big Brother’ star earned the most ‘BB Bucks’ – MEAWW
Posted: at 3:24 pm
For the 'Big Brother' houseguests, the competition is definitely getting more challenging by the week. And with Christian Birkenberger gone, the question remains -- who will be the next target?
While the cookout alliance consisting of Kyland Young, Derek Frazier, Xavier Patter, Hannah Chaddha, Tiffany Mitchell and Azah Awasum has managed to keep themselves safe thus far, this week brings up a severe conflict of interest.
Is Sarah Beth targeting Hannah? 'Big Brother' fans say she sounds 'a little haterish'
'Big Brother': Who won the 'Wild Card Challenge'? Winner bags safety until jury
With Kyland winning the second HoH, the cookout seemed to be slightly at odds ends. Azah hoped that Kyland would throw away the HoH contest, allowing her to keep Britini DAngelo safe, but he himself wanted to keep Sarah Beth Steagall safe. Meanwhile, Tiffany wants nothing more than to get rid of Sarah Beth, while Kyland had Claire Rehfuss, Tiffany's best friend, on his hit list. Kyland decided to put up Claire and Derek F for elimination, to get rid of Claire, seeing that he and Derek F decided that the latter would be a pawn.
While this situation did complicate things, the 'Big Brother' house threw another wrench in the players' plans. With the introduction of the High Rollers Room, each player was awarded a certain amount of BB Bucks, depending on the votes they got by the audience. Players with the highest votes were awarded $100 BB Bucks, those with the second-highest got $75 BB Bucks and finally there was a default amount of $50 awarded to the rest. Using their BB Bucks, each player could bet this cash and play three different games that came with 3 different powers.
The first was Veto Derby for $50, where a housemate can bet on a player competing in the next veto competition. If that player wins, the housemate earns a second veto.
Next was Chopping Block Roulette for $125 -- winning this game allows a houseguest to remove a nominee, and determine their replacement via a roulette wheel.
And finally, there was Coin of Destiny for $250, where the winner of yje game can overthrow the HoH with the flip of a coin. Should the player call the flip correctly, they will be crowned the new HoH.
With Brittni, Derek X and Derek F getting $100 BB Bucks each, fans were confused as to who was voting for Brittni. "No seriously who is voting for Derek f and Britani??? #bb23 #bigbrother" asked a fan. "Wait who gave Britain 100 BB bucks ?? Since when was she a fan fav Im confused #bb23 #BigBrother" tweeted another. "@CBSBigBrother You expecting us to believe that America voted for Britni? All it does is just make it painfully clear that you rig this shit #BigBrother #BB23" questioned a fan. "To whoever voted for Britni. May her ANNOYING butt go home this week. #BigBrother #BB23 @CBSBigBrother" agreed another.
Out of all the players, Kyland, Derek F, Claire and Sarah Beth were the only ones who managed to make it to the Veto Derby scoreboard, which allows them to bet on players during the next veto competition. With each of them planning their own agenda, fans will have to wait and see to find out who comes out on top!
Catch all the new episodes of 'Big Brother' on CBS every Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8/7c. For more information, check your local listings. If you don't have access to cable, there are a handful of streaming services such as AT & TV TV, fubo TV, and Hulu that offer CBS as a part of their channel lineup. For those based out of the United States, using a VPN will help your case.

Six T-Birds heading to NHL training… – Kent Reporter
Posted: at 3:24 pm
Six Kent-based Seattle Thunderbirds players will attend NHL training camps this fall.
The fact that we are sending more and more players to camps every year is an indication of the quality of scouting and development within our organization, said general manager Bil La Forge in an Aug. 18 T-Birds press release. The credit for this success is shared between our scouts, coaching staff and the hard work of the players. I am confident this number will continue to grow in the coming years.
The six T-Birds heading to camps that begin in mid-September are:
Center Matthew Rempe, New York Rangers camp. Rempe was selected by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft, round 6, 165th overall.
Defenseman Tyrel Bauer, Winnipeg Jets camp. Bauer was selected by the Jets in the 2020 NHL Draft, round 6, 164th overall.
Left wing Conner Roulette, Dallas Stars camp. Roulette was selected by the Stars in the 2021 NHL Draft, round 4, 111th overall.
Left wing Lucas Ciona, Calgary Flames camp. Ciona was selected by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft, round 6, 173rd overall.
Defenseman Jeremy Hanzel, Tampa Bay Lightning camp as a free agent.
Center Henrik Rybinski, Edmonton Oilers camp as a free agent.
The T-Birds start the 2021-2022 Western Hockey League regular season on the road against the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The home opener for Seattle is at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, against the Winterhawks at accesso ShoWare Center.

Opinion/Chaput: The culture wars and the politics of history – The Providence Journal
Posted: at 3:23 pm
Erik J. Chaput| Guest columnist
Erik J. Chaput teaches in the School of Continuing Education at Providence College and at Western Reserve Academy. He is the author of "The Peoples Martyr: Thomas Wilson Dorr and His 1842 Rhode Island Rebellion" (2013).
Over the last 30 years, the politics that surrounds the teaching of American history has from time to time burst into the mainstream. For U.S. History teachers preparing to work with students in the classroom in the coming weeks, there will be no shortage of political minefields to navigate.
As historian Matthew Karp noted recently in Harper's magazine, the study of history is a battleground where we must meet the vast demands of the ever-living now. Our culture wars are not only about the rough and tumble surface of cultural life. They also deal with the clash over public symbols, discourse, and the enduring myths of society. Though todays warring political factions are guilty of flattening multidimensional stories, often about race in America, each side believes that they have a hotline to Clio, the muse of History, making the teachers job that much more challenging.
As a nation, sitting on knifes edge, we have been here before. The debate over how to teach, to celebrate, and be critical of American history has been a perennial part of the culture wars. The question of whether the chronicles of the American past in textbooks should fall on the celebratory or condemnatory spectrum is nothing new. In 1993, a public battle was waged over new national history standards.
Lynne Cheney, then chair of the National Endowment of the Humanities, led a charge against historical standards drafted by the late historian Gary B. Nash and several others. According to Cheney, the end product lacked a patriotic element that was necessary in the classroom. Of course, one can find similar sentiments expressed as far back as the 1920s. Recently this debate has played out in controversies surrounding the New York Times 1619 Project and the Trump administrations counter-effort, the 1776 Commission and its connected report.
Sociologist James Davidson Hunters landmark study, "Culture Wars: The Struggle to Define America," should be required reading for teachers as they prepare for the fall semester. Hunters work, which is enjoying its 30th anniversary this year, remains a must read for those looking to further their understanding of the fault lines that have developed in modern America.
Hunters "Culture Wars" chronicles the fundamental alterations in America since the 1960s and how they have led to a greater level of division. According to Hunter, by the end of the 20th century, a battle was raging between conservatives who were committed to an external, definable, and transcendent authority, and liberals who were defined by the spirit of the modern age, of rationalism and subjectivism. The competing visions, and the rhetoric that sustains them were threatening to become the defining forces of public life.
In one of his last major essays in The New Republic in the early 1990s, Irving Howe, the prominent literary critic, noted that a serious education must assume, in part, an adversarial stance toward the very society that sustains it … But if that criticism loses touch with the heritage of the past, it becomes weightless, a mere compendium of momentary complaints.
This is indeed the balancing act that classroom teachers must perform. If teachers paper-over complexity and nuance, if they shut down debate and dismiss opposing views, they lose the ability to explain anything that happens over time, relying on weak and ineffectual metaphors. We must not be, as the abolitionist Frederick Douglass noted after the Civil War, apostles of forgetfulness.

Akash Kapur: "We are all searchers, in our own way…we all envision alternative lives" – Moneycontrol.com

Representational image of a tree at Auroville.
Personal "letters, postcards, pages from diaries, and wrinkled old photographs" can be arich source for piecing together a broader history - of a place, a time, an idea. This realisation becomes sharper - inescapable - as you turn the pages of Better to Have Gone: Love, Death and Quest for Utopia inAuroville by Akash Kapur.
At the book centre of the book are the deaths of two people - John Anthony Walkerand Diane Maes - in the mid-1980s in Auroville. Kapur places these in the broader context of Auroville's founding and its history.
Kapur grew up in Auroville. And as such, he brings a kind of insider's view into the experimentto build a new societyat Auroville.
Sample this paragraph near the end of the book: "There's a place in Auroville I haven't yet told you about. I've saved it for last. Maybe that's because the place is special, or maybe because it's the most difficult to explain. That's saying a lot: so much of what goeson in this town, has gone on, is difficult to explain." (The place he goes on to describe is the Matrimandir or Inner Chamber at Auroville.)
In an email interview, Kapur talked about his research for the book, and responded tocritics whofeel that the book glazes over the colonial aspects in Auroville's history.
Tell us about the title of the book: is it referring to your return to Auroville in some way?
No, actually the title comes from a letter written by John Walker Sr., who is the father of John Anthony Walker, one of the main characters in the book. The father was a conservative establishment man, very much at the heart of power structures in Washington, DC. His son renounced his entitled birth and moved to Auroville, where he sought to build a new society. In many ways, the sons life was a repudiation of his fathers, and a source of great bafflement to the family. And yet while researching the book, I came across a letter the father had written to his son, late in the fathers life, in which he expresses admiration for the sons pilgrimage in India, and tells him its better to have gone on it than to have stayed quietly in America. To me, this was a striking reminder that we are all searchers, in our own way, and that we all envision alternative livesno matter how outwardly conformist and traditional our existences may appear.
Of course, theres a note of irony, or questioning, in the title too. A couple years after receiving this letter, the son dies. So was it really better to have gone? Readers will judge for themselves.
Critics have said that your book doesnt engage with the postcolonial history of Auroville.
To an extent, I find it a surprising critique, because there are two characters in the book who actually refer to the possibility that Auroville is a reiteration of colonialismand, more generally, I very deliberately included a fairly long section that explores the complicated and sometimes troubled relationship between Auroville and the surrounding villages.
Nonetheless, I can understand that if someones overriding impression of Auroville is as a colonial enterprise, then my treatment of the subject will seem insufficient, as I tend to see the situation as somewhat more nuanced. I think part of the problem is that Auroville is many things, and has many tendencies and strands. There are elements of the communitys history (and perhaps present too) that could undoubtedly be seen through a prism of colonialism; other aspects of the communitys relationship with India and the surrounding villages are far more salutary. Auroville and the villages have often worked together in pursuit of economic development, and they have also collaborated in the remarkable ecological restoration of the land (a collaboration I discuss in the book). I understand that visitors to Aurovilleespecially casual visitorsmay be a bit taken aback by all the foreigners they see driving around in the heart of South India, but actually, around half of the communitys population is Indian (including part of my own family). So I think simply characterizing Auroville as a colonial project is quite unfair (to Auroville, not to me).
At the same time, I do very much think this issue is an important one, and one thats essential for Auroville to keep in mind as it develops and grows. And so in some ways, I actually welcome the critique - as a way of fostering a necessary conversation, and ensuring that Auroville does not repeat historical injustices and racial imbalances that remain so persistent despite the formal end of colonialism.
What kind of research did you do for this book?
I used some letters and diaries, especially those written by the two main characters, John and Diane. But most of the research was conducted through interviews; I was essentially reconstructing history through oral narratives, which was quite challenging at times. I spoke to a wide variety of people, many of whom were still living in Auroville, but some who had moved away, and some who had never lived there in the first place.
Because the story takes place in multiple locations and across time, I also visited a number of places in the world. NYC was of course a major area of research, as John had spent time there and thats where my wife moved after the deaths I describe in the book. I also visited Ravena, in Italy; Washington, DC, where John grew up (and where the National Gallery of Art, which his father managed, is located); and I spent a night in a monastery in Rhode Island, where John had spent some time. Some of these places occupied relatively little time in the final narrative, but they were essential to help me understand the broader landscape upon which the story takes place.
What do you hope readers take away from this book?
Thats a difficult question that I could answer in many ways. I guess one thing I would mention is that I tried very hard, while researching and writing, to remain open to different points of view and what we might think of as different frameworks of reality. Someone who read a draft commented that parts of the book read almost like a fairy tale, and I think what she meant is that there are some things that happen that seem pretty outlandish and simply unreal when seen from a traditional framework. I dont necessarily condone or endorse all those things, but I dont quite condemn or dismiss many of them, too.
One thing Ive learned growing up in Aurovilleand thats been reinforced while thinking about this bookis that there are many different versions of reality, and many different versions of the right way to live. While we may not personally subscribe to them all, its a good idea to remain open to alternatives. Faith and spiritual belief are complicated phenomena; while we often focus on the dogmas of faith, we should also be mindful of the dogmas of rationalism.
Your previous book, 'India Becoming', spoke about liberalisation and the Americanisation of India. Now that youve been back in India for a few years, do you think this Americanisation is still ongoing?

Dodgers Trevor Bauer to take Fifth Amendment in court hearing Thursday – The Athletic

Content warning: This story includes allegations of sexual assault that may be difficult to read and emotionally upsetting.
The attorney for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer told the Los Angeles Superior Court judge that Bauer will take the Fifth Amendment when he takes the stand Thursday in the hearing of a woman seeking a five-year restraining order against him.
Bauers attorney, Shawn Holley, told Judge Dianna Gould-Saltman on Wednesday that Bauer will only say his name and what he does for a living, citing a pending criminal investigation by police in Pasadena, Calif. The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects against self-incrimination. There are still ongoing investigations by the Pasadena Police Department and MLB into allegations of sexual assault, but Bauer has yet to be formally charged with a crime.
The 27-year-old San Diego woman accusing Bauer of sexual assault concluded her three days of testimony Wednesday. Bauer, who is currently on paid administrative leave which has been extended to Friday, has been present in court during the womans testimony. Bauer's representatives have repeatedly said everything that occurred during the two encounters was consensual.
Holley continued a second day of cross-examination of the woman by reading from text messages the woman sent friends when court documents were first filed in June. Holleys questioning suggested the woman was not seeking protection by filing those documents, but was trying to hurt Bauer.
Holley read texts from the woman which included statements such as Media is freaking out. On my side, and Its the best thing I could have hoped for, to which the woman clarified by saying she was happy to see the media and the public on social media were not attacking her.
The woman alleges that Bauer punched her, choked her with her own hair until she lost consciousness, then had anal sex with her, which she had not consented to. On Tuesday, the woman testified that she was just as afraid of the social consequences as the physical ones of coming forward about her meetings with Bauer. She then described the physical pain and trauma she suffered following a second meeting with Bauer, and the subsequent hours-long sexual assault exam.
The woman was granted a temporary restraining order until a hearing could be held and evidence presented for a long-term order. Holley asked the woman why she felt she needed protection from Bauer when he made no contact with her in nearly a month when she filed the order.
That was what worried me, the woman replied, saying Bauers silence after constantly checking on her in the days following the second incident made her fear he was planning something and may seek her out in San Diego.
Did you have some reason to believe he was going to come to your house 130 miles away? Holley asked.
Yes, I did, she said.
The Washington Post reported on Saturday that Bauer had a temporary order of protection placed against him in June 2020, after an Ohio woman accused him of physical abuse and threatening her.
The legal team seeking the order for the woman said that Bauer was the last remaining witness they intended to call at the hearing. Holley asked Gould-Saltman to allow Bauer to avoid taking the stand entirely.
Most of the hearing has consisted of testimony from the woman herself, along with brief appearances on the stand from the nurse who gave her a sexual assault exam after the second encounter, a doctor called by Bauers team to analyze those findings, and the womans best friend.

Attorney: Bauer plans to invoke Fifth Amendment – The Dispatch – The Commercial Dispatch

LOS ANGELES Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer intends to invoke his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and will answer no questions in the case of a woman seeking a five-year restraining order against him, his attorney said in court Wednesday.
Bauers lawyer Shawn Holley told a judge the only questions he will answer are his name and what he does for a living, and cited a pending criminal investigation by police in Pasadena, California.
The legal team seeking the order for a woman who says Bauer choked her into unconsciousness and punched her in two sexual encounters said that Bauer was the last remaining witness they intended to call at the hearing.
Holley asked Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Dianna Gould-Saltman to allow Bauer to avoid taking the stand entirely, as defendants in criminal cases do.
Normally in civil matters, a witness would invoke the Fifth Amendment on a question-by-question basis.
Gould-Saltman adjourned the hearing for the day, saying she would read legal precedents provided by Holley and issue a decision Thursday morning. The judge might also issue her decision on the domestic violence restraining order Thursday, after hearing final arguments from the two sides.
Bauer, who is fighting the order and has said through representatives that everything that happened between him and the 27-year-old San Diego woman was consensual, has attended all three days of the hearing and had been expected to take the stand.
Most of the hearing has consisted of testimony from the woman herself, along with brief appearances on the stand from the nurse who gave her a sexual assault exam after the second encounter, a doctor called by Bauers team to analyze those findings and the womans best friend.
Major League Baseball put Bauer, 30, on paid administrative leave July 2, a few days after the woman was given a temporary restraining order until evidence could be heard, as is common in such matters.
In her third day on the witness stand Wednesday, the woman said that the satisfaction she expressed to friends when the case first went public was a reaction to her treatment by the media, not happiness that she was taking down the Dodgers pitcher.
It felt good to not see me slut-shamed right off the bat, the woman said under cross-examination from Holley, who read from her text messages sent at the time.
Media is freaking out. On my side, one of the womans texts read. Its the best thing I could have hoped for.
Holley asked, What does the media freaking out have to do with your safety?
The woman replied that she had felt Bauers representatives had shamed her with a statement saying the nights the two spent were wholly consensual, and she was happy to see that the media, and the public on social media, were not attacking her.
Holley asked the woman why she felt she needed protection from Bauer when he had made no contact with her in nearly a month when she filed for the order.
That was what worried me, the woman replied, saying Bauers silence after constantly checking on her in the days following the second incident made her fear he was planning something and might seek her out in San Diego.
Did you have some reason to believe he was going to come to your house 130 miles away? Holley asked.
Yes, I did, she said.
Holley also pointed out lies that the woman acknowledged telling her closest friends in texts about when and where the meetings with Bauer happened.
The woman said that one friend had warned her not to go to Bauers home in Pasadena, so she told her the first encounter happened in San Diego. Another friend was one of her bosses, the woman said, and she had to lie about the timing of the second Bauer night because she had called in sick.
Holley also asked the woman why she had acknowledged in messages that she was watching Bauers games despite saying she wanted nothing to do with him.
You have testified previously that you had to delete all your communications with him, Holley asked, but you still wanted to watch him pitch, right?
Possibly, the woman answered.
The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they have been victims of sexual assault.
Bauer agreed to a $102 million, three-year contract to join his hometown Dodgers earlier this year after winning his first Cy Young with the Cincinnati Reds last season.

R. Kelly's former tour manager was forced to testify about the night R. Kelly learned 15-year-old Aaliyah was pregnant.
The manager said he bribed an official for a fake ID so Kelly could marry the teen.
Demetrius Smith tried to plead the fifth, but was ordered to take the stand.

Demetrius Smith, R. Kelly's former tour manager, was ordered to take the stand Friday to tell jurors about the night the singer learned he had gotten 15-year-old Aaliyah pregnant.
Smith, who started working with Kelly in the '80s when he was performing at talent shows and in subway stations, tried to assert his Fifth Amendment privilege not to self-incriminate, but was granted immunity from prosecution and ordered on Friday to testify against the singer.
Kelly is on trial for a long list of alleged crimes, including charges related to bribing a government official to obtain a fake ID so he could take Aaliyah as his child bride. Smith reluctantly admitted that he was the man who found and paid the official - a welfare office employee - for the ID so Kelly could marry Aaliyah and avoid prosecution for having sex with a minor.
Kelly denies any wrongdoing.
Throughout his time on the stand, Smith pushed back at the prosecution's questioning. He said he didn't want to be there and that he was "uncomfortable" talking about Aaliyah without her parents there.
"I feel like I'm on trial for Aaliyah. Shit," he said, at one point.
Judge Ann Donnelly insisted he answer, and Smith shared details about the illegal relationship between young Aaliyah and Kelly. It is illegal for an adult to have sex with a 15-year-old in Michigan and Illinois.
Smith said he and Kelly met the Aaliyah through her uncle, Barry Hankerson, who was also Kelly's manager.
Kelly and Smith flew to Aaliyah's home in Detroit in 1992 to listen to her sing - at her uncle's request. The meeting went well, Smith said, describing Aaliyah's voice as "angelic." Kelly then began writing and producing her music.
Story continues
Smith first told the court Friday that Kelly's time with Aaliyah, including when Kelly asked to be alone with her, was all about her music, but then the prosecution pressed him on the issue, showing him his prior Grand Jury testimony.
Eventually, Smith admitted that he had confronted Kelly at least once about his relationship with Aaliyah after feeling they were "too playful." He recalled at one point asking Kelly if he was "messing around" with her.
Smith said he believed Kelly when he denied that was the case, but then one night in the middle of a performance in Orlando in August of 1994, Kelly made him immediately arrange for travel back to his home in Chicago.
"Aaliyah's in trouble, man. We need to get home," Smith testified that Kelly told him that night.

Smith testified at first, Kelly didn't share any details about what was wrong with Aaliyah, but ordered him to book a round-trip flight.
Smith said he wanted to call Hankerson to see what was going on with Aaliyah, but was told not to. After the show, Kelly, Smith, and other employees boarded a plane to Chicago and the singer "cried a lot," admitting to Smith that Aaliyah was pregnant, he testified.
"That was a shock," Smith told the court.
Kelly told Smith that his other manager, Derrel McDavid, was making arrangements for the singer to marry the teenager, "to protect himself, to protect Aaliyah," Smith testified.
When asked what Kelly would be protecting himself against, Smith responded: "Shit. Jail, I guess."
When the plane landed in Chicago, Smith said he urged Kelly not to try and marry the teenager.
"She was too young. He was confused," Smith recalled.
But then Kelly started asking Smith whose "side" he was on, and the tour manager started to feel like he was being pushed out of the singer's life.
To avoid losing his place in Kelly's inner circle, Smith told the singer, McDavid, and Aaliyah that he knew how to get the teenager a fake ID that made her look old enough to legally marry the singer.
He then went to a local welfare office and offered a woman $500 to make her an ID. The group then went to a nearby FedEx or similar shipping store and had an associate make the teen a fake employment ID as backup, before Kelly and Aaliyah went to the Cook County clerk's office to apply for a marriage license.
The clerk accepted the IDs, and the group went back to the hotel suite where a minister performed a ceremony to marry them, Smith said.
A marriage license shown to the jury Friday indicated they were wed on August 31, 1994. Aaliyah's age was listed as 18 - three years older than her actual age.
Aaliyah's underage marriage to Kelly was annulledin February 1995 by her parents. She died six years later, at 22, in a plane crash off the Bahamas.
Court went into recess for the weekend at 5:30 p.m. and the prosecution plans to continue questioning Smith Monday morning.
Kelly's trial is expected to last four weeks.
