We limit our main features to a maximum of 20 per week, as they are often about new concepts and new thought processes. Our main features are also exclusive articles responding to the latest education news, maybe an insight from an expert into a policy announcement or response to an education think tank report or a white paper.
FE Voices was originally set up as a section on FE News to give a voice back to the sector. As we now have over 3,000 newsrooms and contributors, FE Voices are usually thought leadership articles, they dont necessarily have to be exclusive, but usually are, they are slightly shorter than Main Features. Amid seasonal slowdown, Michigan’s online gambling operators post mixed results for July – The Detroit News
Posted: at 4:11 pm
Michigan's online gambling operators posted mixed results for the month of July, according to results reported by the Michigan Gaming Control Board Monday, amid what industry analysts say is a normal seasonal slowdown.
In all, operatorsreported $111.9 million in online gambling revenue for the month $92.3 million from internet casino games and poker roomsand $19.6 millionfrom online sports betting.
We're offering a great deal on all-access subscriptions. Check it out here.
Online sports betting operators reported a monthly handle, or the total amount wagered by bettors, of $188 million for the month, down 20% from June. And industry analysis site PlayMichigan.com noted that the state's online sportsbooks generated their lowest volume ever for a full month, dropping to less than $200 million for the first time since online gambling launched in Michigan in January.
Gross revenue tied to online sports betting also droppedin July, to about $19.6 million, from June's $24.9 million, according to figures released by the state.
"Pursuits other than gaming are priorities for many in July, whether that is a trip to the lake or a backyard barbecue," PlayMichigan.com analyst Matt Schoch said in a statement. "The good news for sportsbooks is that with the July dip now out of the way, operators can look forward to Michiganders returning from their summer vacations and for the excitement for the football season to build."
Meanwhile, internet gaming generated $92.3 million in gross revenue last month, up 3.5% from June. Analysts said the launch of live dealer online casino games in late July likely drove additional wagering.
"Many of the same forces that slow sports betting in the summer, including summer vacations, also affect online casinos," PlayUsa.com data analyst Eric Ramsey said in a statement.
But, he added, "Michigan is still a young market that hasn't yet reached maturity. The addition of live dealer games will make a difference going forward. And as the summer turns to fall, we should once again see the revenue at online casinos grow."
Collectively, operators in July paid the state$17.1 million in taxes and payments tied to internet gaming, and $762,220 in taxes and payments tied to online sports betting. Taxes and payments are based on adjusted gross receipts, which include deductions for the monetary value of free play incentives provided to and wagered by bettors.
Meanwhile, Detroit's three casinos MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown Casino and MotorCity Casino Hotel paid $4.8 million in internet gaming and sports betting taxes and fees to the city of Detroit last month. And online gambling operatorsat the state's tribal casinos made$2 million in wagering payments to the tribes' governing bodies.
MotorCity Casino, with operator FanDuel, reported the largest monthly online sports betting handle of anyone for July, with more than $54.5 million in bets.
In terms of gross revenue tied to internet gaming, MGM Grand Detroit's $33.8 million for the monthfar outpacedits competition.
In July, a total of 13 operators were authorized for both forms of online gambling; one was authorized only for internet casino gaming.
Last week, MGCB reported that the three Detroit casinos netted some $116.9 million in aggregate revenue tied to table games, slots and retail sports betting last month, for a 9.3% increase over June's results. Those results were in line with a national rebound of casino gaming, with the American Gaming Association reporting a new quarterly revenue record.
The state offers a 24-hour, toll-free problem gambling helpline at 1-800-270-7117. Further resources are available at http://www.michigan.gov/mgcb.

RTI: Union government considering "uniform approach" to online gambling regulation – MediaNama.com
Posted: at 4:11 pm
The IT Ministers statement was in response to a letter written by the Andhra Pradesh CM requesting the government to ban online gambling sites due to concerns of addiction and suicide.
Youre reading it here first: The union government is considering a uniform approach to regulating online gambling and real money gaming, according to a letter by the Minister of Electronics & Information Technology obtained by MediaNama. In the letter, written to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that The subject of betting and gambling falls under the jurisdiction of the State Governments under Entries 34 and 62 of List II of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India, but that the Government is cognizant of the issues arising because of different legislations in different States in the area of regulation of online gaming and the matter is under consideration to have a uniform approach on this matter.
This acknowledgement that the government is considering a centralised approach to regulating gambling and betting sites is significant. While states have been changing their local gambling laws to regulate (or outlaw) online gambling and sites, the betting and gambling industry has been obtaining court orders (like the one issued by Madras High Court) that have made it difficult for states to restrict gambling and betting activities that require some skill. The Prime Ministers Office has shown interest in the issue, indicating that there could be movement on this front. Its not clear what action the government would decide on its actions could range from a model law that states could choose to emulate, to a constitutional amendment that would give it more powers to regulate online gaming.
Vaishnaw was responding to an October 2020 letter written by Reddy to then-IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, requesting the central government to ban online betting and gambling sites in Andhra Pradesh. Vaishnaw, whose response is dated August 3, said that while he understood Reddys concerns the CM had linked these platforms to Suicides due to losing money, severe addiction and consequent violent behaviour blocking could only be performed by the central government in the interest of Sovereignty and Integrity of India, Defence of India, Security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or public order for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence relating to above.
Reddy had argued that the law passedby Andhra Pradesh government to regulate such platforms had made even promoting or facilitating gambling activities illegal and that Internet Service Providers could be said to be facilitating gambling by allowing access to these sites. The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 notified under section 79 of the Act require the intermediaries to observe due diligence by informing not to publish information encouraging money laundering or gambling and the notice can be issued by the Appropriate Govt. / its agency, Vaishnaw replied. ISPs fall under the definition of intermediaries.
The Andhra Pradesh Gaming (Amendment) Act, 2020 criminalised indulging in gambling to the extent of a cognisable offence, with players potentially facing six months of prison time, and organisers facing one year. Fantasy league games were not under the bans ambit, but games like rummy and poker were. Real-money gaming platform operators its not clear which ones in November 2020 approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court to challenge the order, the New Indian Express had reported, and are being represented by advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Hearings in this case are ongoing.
What follows is the entire text of the response by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddys letter.
03 AUG 2021
Dear Shri Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy Ji,
Kindly refer to your D.O. No. 70/CM/PRL dated 27.10.2020, addressed to my predecessor, requesting for banning online games, online gambling and online betting sites.
At the outset, I appreciate the concerns raised by you. The subject of betting and gambling falls under the jurisdiction of the State Governments under Entries 34 and 62 of List II of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India. States, including Andhra Pradesh, have enacted their own legislation to regulate betting and gambling activities.
As regards blocking of sites/apps, the Information Technology Act 2000, provides for blocking of information for public access only under specific conditions, i.e. in the interest of Sovereignty and Integrity of India, Defence of India, Security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or public order for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence relating to above. State of Andhra Pradesh has already nominated a Nodal Officer who has been working with the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) on 69A based blocking. In addition, the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 notified under section 79 of the Act require the intermediaries to observe due diligence by informing not to publish information encouraging money laundering or gambling and the notice can be issued by the Appropriate Govt. / its agency.
Further, the Government is cognizant of the issues arising because of different legislations in different States in the area of regulation of online gaming and the matter is under consideration to have a uniform approach on this matter.
With regards,
Yours sincerely,
[signed]
(Ashwini Vaishnaw)

Online casinos and their evolution in the mobile industry – Boca Raton’s Most Reliable News Source – The Boca Raton Tribune
Posted: at 4:11 pm
New technologies came to simplify the life of humanity and with the use of mobile phones this theory is evidenced.
Currently, smartphones are an element of great importance in the life of any person. From a mobile you can communicate, inform yourself and even entertain yourself. In the use of this small device there are hours of attention in view of its innumerable functions that have changed the life of modern man. It is impressive, but that is how it was in the first phones, entertainment was not thought about, and these did not have built-in games, it was not until 1994 that Marathon launched a model with Tetris and in 1998 Snake gained a massive audience after becoming a standard game on Nokia phones.
Although the technology was still evolving, it took many years for games and telephony to intersect, but once the first mobile operating systems appeared, it did not stop. The companies discovered a great business in the fusion of video games and devices, and the best thing is that the public responded in the best way and now demands much more.
In 2003, with the emergence of 3G technology, the mobile gaming industry started and some time later the first mobile sites appeared, this is how gambling expanded and in 2007 the true phenomenon occurred with the arrival of smartphones to the market.
It was easier to be connected to any game regardless of where you are, thus starting the growth of the online gaming industry, and for this reason today there are more who use the cell phone to play than the computers themselves.
Successful products such as bar slot machines and other categories are now offered on online casino platforms as mobile games in view of the acceptance they have had among users. There may be some obvious differences between playing on a mobile or a computer, but the preference for smartphones has led the best online casinos like allvideoslots.com/cn/ to offer mobile applications and versions for iOS and Android.
There was no doubt an adaptation by game software creators who understood that smartphones were here to stay. They would no longer just focus on computer games, but they had to enter the mobile segment.
Technical problems began to appear, for example, it was difficult to create video slots in a format compatible with Apple due to the use of Flash, it also happened in Android in the third version of the operating system, but they did not stop and they got the possibility of reprogramming existing online slot machines in the HTML5 programming language so as not to follow the problems on mobiles, and today almost all online game providers are based on the HTML5 platform.
Estimates indicate that by 2025 a good part of mobile traffic will come from 5G networks. This would bring significant improvements for online games especially for casinos in view of total stability for players. In addition, the new devices will be developed with special characteristics that meet the requirements of this technology, which is why there is talk of better quality of images and graphics that seek to capture even more mobile game users.

July Revenue Figures Suggest Skys The Limit For NJ Online Casino – NJ Online Gambling
Posted: at 4:11 pm
Whenever it seems as if perhaps New Jerseys online casino revenue has finally leveled off after almost eight years, along comes a month like July 2021.
A record $118.7 million was won by the online casino industry in July, according to figures released Monday by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement.
That figure comes after April ($108.2 million), May ($108.2 million), and June ($107.1 million) each had failed to match the March record of $113.7 million.
For the third consecutive month, Borgata outflanked longtime state market leader Golden Nugget. Borgata the overall revenue standardbearer almost since it opened in 2003 and its partners took in $36.5 million, beating the $33.6 million collected by the Golden Nugget-affiliated sites.
Resorts was a solid third at $23.3 million, while Caesars was the other $10 million-plus earner at $10.2 million.
The news was less impressive for online poker, which dropped from a relatively robust $4.8 million in July 2020 down to $3.1 million last month.
The numbers are also heading in the wrong direction for sports betting, which generated $578.7 million in handle all but $49.3 million of which came online. Still, the industry captured 9.5% of the wagers, the highest holdrate achieved since January 2020. That edged out the 9.3% figure from June with both marks likely coming from increasingly aggressive parlay betting promotions in the industry.
For the year, the industrys hold from parlay betting is 18.5%, compared to 7.8% overall. Football betting has yielded a 6.1% return, compared to 4.2% on baseball bets and just 4% on basketball wagers.
Unfortunately, state regulators lump every other sport into a large category called Other. Those bets have produced a 5.5% rate of return for the books. The $81.4 million collected on Other bets this year is almost double what has been collected on baseball and football combined.
As usual, the Meadowlands Racetrack and its partners FanDuel and PointsBet combined not only to lead the pack, but to take in more than half the revenue at $31.7 million. Of the casino partners, Resorts with DraftKings managed $10.6 million, with Borgata ($6.3 million) the only other network clearing even one-tenth of Resorts number.

Opponents Of Sports Betting Bill Say It Won’t Protect Consumers, Will Worsen Wealth Inequality – Patch.com
Posted: at 4:11 pm
Opponents of the sports betting bill the Ohio Senate approved earlier this summer said the bill doesn't include proper consumer protections and stands to worsen Ohio's wealth inequality.
National Director of Stop Predatory Gambling Les Bernal said that the commercialization of sports betting and online gambling would not be in the public interest during a Tuesday press conference, calling commercialized gambling a form of "consumer financial fraud" unlike any other business, including those involving vices like tobacco and alcohol.
"Citizens are conned into thinking that they can win money on games that are designed to get them fleeced it's offering the lure that you might get money," Bernal said. "Inevitably, you lose your money in the end, especially if you keep gambling. Any success only comes at someone else's expense."
Senate Bill 176, approved by the Senate in June, would create three separate sportsbook licenses, allowing Ohioans to place bets online, at professional sports arenas and a select few bars and restaurants. Under this plan, sports betting would be overseen by the Ohio Casino Control Commission, and the state would collect a 10% tax on net revenue, with nearly all of the proceeds going to K-12 education and the rest going to problem gambling services.
Bernal said the legalization of commercial sports betting would come at the expense of Ohio's children because the Senate bill does not include any provisions that would shield kids from local gambling advertising in the way that kids are already protected from tobacco advertising.
The gambling industry spent $154 million on local advertising during the first quarter of 2021, up from a mere $10.7 million at the start of 2019, according to a Neilsen report.
If the bill moves forward in the House, as it is predicted to do in the fall, Bernal said the state legislature has a responsibility to keep children from being targeted by the gaming industry, because exposure to gambling advertising desensitizes young people to the dangers of commercialized gambling, making them more likely to develop gambling problems later in life.
"Those who are targeted today will be the problem gamblers of tomorrow," he said, quoting a British member of parliament who addressed the toll of gambling advertising on young people in the United Kingdom.
Bernal called the bill's plan to fund K-12 education a "budget gimmick," because sports betting would be regulated by the OCCC and not the Ohio Lottery Commission, which must use the lottery profits to support local education.
But though Bernal wants the legislature to reject the sports betting bill, Tom Roberts, president of the Ohio Conference of the NAACP and former state legislator, said he would support the Senate's plan if it were changed to make the OLC responsible for regulating sports betting.
If passed as it currently stands, Roberts said he thinks the money that will be pulled in by sports betting will reduce the amount of money going into the state's lottery.
"Good public schools can pull children out of poverty, stabilize neighborhoods and help reverse Ohio's economic decline,'' Roberts said. "We have one chance to do this right and the Senate-passed bill would be a disaster.''
The House's sports betting bill, passed in May, would make the OLC the regulatory body for sports betting in Ohio.
Bernal said the bill would also further harm low and lower-middle income families, especially Black and Brown families, because the tax dollars that come in from gambling offset write-offs casinos receive from the state.
The combined financial loss of Ohioans personal wealth to the state's lottery, existing regional casinos and video gambling machines is already $3 billion per year, he said.
Ohio is one of just a few states that allows casinos to write off unlimited promotional play, often called free play, meaning casinos can write off the cost of promotions like receiving $1000 in free bets to encourage further betting.
Since 2019, casinos in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Michigan, and Virginia have written off over $336 million in free play bets from their taxes, Bloomberg reported.
"You're redistributing your tax liability along racial lines, because low-income folks, which are disproportionately black and brown folks, are losing more money per capita to state-sanctioned gambling," he said.
With the Senate bill expected to be heard by the House in the fall, Roberts said they plan on advocating against the bill as it is currently written.

Study Adds Evidence Linking Vaping to Short-term Lung Symptoms in Youth – AJMC.com Managed Markets Network
Posted: at 4:08 pm
Use of electronic nicotine products was associated with an increased likelihood of dry nighttime cough and wheezing in adolescents, according to findings gleaned from a large survey.
A consequential cross-sectional study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health has offered additional evidence that electronic nicotine product (ENP) use, also known as vaping, among young adults is linked with an increased likelihood of developing a dry nighttime cough and general wheezing. The findings may tie into the long-term effects of vaping, an activity that has been termed an epidemic among young adults in America.
Responses were gathered during 2015-2016 through the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study database in its third wave of data collection. A total of 9750 participants aged 12 to 17 years were surveyed. This time frame overlapped with a distinct increase in vaping among youth in America. The authors observed that the young adults more likely to have vaped in the prior 12 months tended to be older teenage non-Hispanic Whites. Among this group, there were greater tendencies to also use more traditional nicotine products like cigars and cigarettes compared with their nonvaping peers.
After adjusting for covariates, the investigators found that wheezing/whistling, number of times wheezing, and dry cough at night were associated with ENP use (P < .05). Compared with adolescents who did not vape, those who vaped had 23% higher adjusted odds of dry nighttime cough (adjusted odds ratio, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.04-1.46; P = .02) and 37% higher adjusted odds of wheezing or whistling (adjusted odds ratio, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.11-1.71; P = .005).
On the other hand, the data did not find evidence to suggest a connection between e-cigarette use and new asthma diagnoses or exercise-induced wheezing in young adults who vape. Those surveyed who already were diagnosed with asthma did not show an association between ENP use and a changing need for a quick-relief or long-acting inhaler.
The authors noted existing evidence that vaping as an adolescent can lead to other addiction patterns being stronger than if the activity began as an adult, and they added that the nicotine in some vaping pens may have negative effects on developing brains. There remains a possibility that vaping may render the body more vulnerable to lung injury from conditions including pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
How vaping may hurt the lungs is not yet definitively clear. One possibility the authors suggest is that aerosols from e-cigarettes may accumulate in the lungs and disrupt macrophages that clear blockages, possibly leading to irritation and poor robustness of airways.
Overall, the authors feel that their findings of increased coughing and wheezing among those surveyed are clinically relevant. The study had one of the largest sample sizes observed to date and was the first nationally representative US study of youth examining multiple variables of ENP use that controlled for variables that previously influenced other studies.
The authors believe that in order to understand the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on respiration and asthma, additional highly focused data gathered from longitudinal studies that track pulmonary toxicity and clinical manifestations need to be produced.
To this end, the authors add that future studies should explore the differences in those surveyed who vape nicotine vs marijuana. There could be variations beyond the scope of their own research due to different substance types, the type of device used to vape, and the intensity of the vaping.
As it stands, the data gathered point to an association between ENP use and negative respiratory effects. The authors stress that these findings pave the way for more research in the field to be conducted going forward.

Had enough smoke? Here’s the lowdown on vaping as a smoke-free alternative for getting high – Pacific Northwest Inlander

With vaping, the cannabis product is heated to a specific temperature that allows it to be vaporized and inhaled, but not to a point where it combusts, or burns.
With wildfire smoke choking the region and air quality levels falling into the unhealthy range far too often lately, the thought of smoking to get stoned might not be the most appealing just now.
Which makes now as good a time as any to look into the vape options out on the market. Let's answer a few basic questions about vapes.
What is vaping?
As is the case with smoking, vaping delivers cannabis via the lungs and, as a result, has a similar effects profile. The key difference between the two is the temperature to which the cannabis is heated.
With vaping, the cannabis product is heated to a specific temperature that allows it to be vaporized and inhaled, but not to a point where it combusts, or burns. As a result, no smoke is produced. That makes vaping a discreet way to consume cannabis, and a bit easier on the lungs as well.
Is vaping safe?
An epidemic of vape-related lung injuries led to a wave of hospitalizations around the country in late 2019. Researchers quickly linked the injuries to vitamin E acetate, an ingredient often used to change the viscosity of liquid vape products, especially black market ones. Regulators in Washington subsequently banned the sale of vape products containing vitamin E acetate. As a result, all products sold at licensed dispensaries in Washington are required to be free of the chemical.
Otherwise, vaping is considered to be somewhat safer than smoking, if only because smoking creates more particles that are inhaled. Still, vaping has inherent risks associated with consuming a substance through the lungs.
What are your options?
Vape pens have become incredibly popular and ubiquitous in the cannabis community. They're simple, portable, user-friendly and discreet. With cannabis oil contained in a one-use cartridge, vape pens allow users to consume cannabis without ever needing to touch the actual material.
On the other end of the spectrum are dab rigs, with their complicated glasswork, red-hot metal nails and conspicuous use of a blow torch. Dabbing allows users a bit more flexibility in the product they consume and is a much more involved process than using a pen.
If you're looking for a blast from the past, there are modern versions of the volcano vaporizers that heat plain old cannabis flower, rather than the processed oils and waxes used in pens and dab rigs.

Did you know that when you use a vaporizer, you are taking part in a hobby that is thousands of years old? It might seem new and trendy, but its use goes back to ancient Egypt, if not further. Learning more about the hobby can enhance your enjoyment of it.
Around 2500 years ago, a Greek historian named Herodotus wrote about his observations of Egyptians and their use of what might have been one of the very first vaporizers. The Egyptians that Herodotus met in his travels put seeds on hot stones and inhaled the vapor. Although this is the first written record we have of this practice, it doesnt take much imagination to think that humans have been doing it for far longer. Even the very earliest humans might have experimented with this around the time they were learning to use fire to cook meat.
Youve probably seen people smoking with a hookah, at least in pictures. There are records of its invention in India in the 15th century, but a similar device might have been in use in Persia before that. Like more modern devices, it can also be used for vaporizing and smoking substances.
A device for vaporizing medicinal compounds was conceived of several times in the 1920s and 1930s, and each time, their would-be inventors applied for patents. However, it was not until the 1960s that someone invented a smokeless cigarette although that too never went on the market, in part because traditional smoking was so popular. Similar products followed, but it was a Chinese pharmacist in 2003 who invented todays e-cigarette.
Vaporizers as we think of them today have only been around since just after the turn of the century, and they are more popular than ever before. If you have been considering getting one yourself, a great portable modelis the Mighty vaporizer by Storz & Bickel. This can be a great substitute for smoking cigarettes and can give you a cleaner experience.
As human beings, we love to gather with like-minded people. In fact, this is how subcultures form and entire cultures are shifted. Vaping is no different. Just as coffee connoisseurs are obsessed with the perfect pour and craft beer enthusiasts endlessly tinker to get the balance of hops right, vaping enthusiasts work on their clouds through constant experimentation with different types of gears. There are trade fairs, events, social media gear groups, and even celebrities. You dont have to get deeply involved with the subculture if you dont want to, but if its a community that youre after, youll find it.
That community is one reason people are drawn to the hobby, but its not the only reason. Most people indulge in a much more low-key way, but there are plenty of pleasures and benefits. These benefits range from curing various health problemsto stimulating appetite. Additionally, it can be a great alternative to smoking. It can also be cheaper. It doesnt linger on the air as much, and this means that if you use it indoors, the smell wont stay around.

If Apple Made a Weed Vaporizor, the DaVinci IQC Would Be It – Gizmodo

I switched to edibles last year. It seemed like the healthiest way to go, especially with a nasty respiratory virus sweeping the globe, and I did not want to add any risk to my lungs. Edibles are kind of a commitment, though. They take a long time to kick in, and then they stay in your system a lot longer, too. Sometimes, you want to kick back get a little stoned right awayas you would with a post work glass of wineand know itll mostly wear off before bedtime. I still wanted to avoid smoke, though, which meant I would be searching for the perfect, convenient, smooth-hitting, portable vaporizer. And I found it.
DaVinci has been making really solid vaporizers for years, but its latest, the DaVinci IQC, strikes the perfect balance between quality and price. Coming in at $230, it is by no means the cheapest vaporizer out there, but it just works so well that it instantly became the top vaporizer I would recommend to friends.
A supremely well-designed portable weed vaporizer for flower or extract.
It tastes divine and produces very smooth, cool vapor. It heats up in 30 seconds, lasts a long time, is super easy to load, has a big bowl, charges via USB-C, works with flower and extracts, and easily fits in your pocket.
Expensive. It does get a bit warm in your hand, but not too bad. Would be cool if they implemented the dosage calculator found in IQ2, but it didnt work that well anyway.
A very quick vaporizer primer, for those who dont know: Vaporizing cannabis is not the same as smoking cannabis. The idea is that you have a device (a vaporizer) that heats your bud up to the point where all the good stuff (such as THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids) aerosolize so you can inhale them, but not so hot that the bud actually burns. This means you dont end up inhaling as many harsh carcinogens (though its certainly not 100-percent clean). Vaporizers hit smoother, are much easier on your throat and lungs, they taste a lot better, and typically produce a cleaner high.

The ICQ can be used for both flower (a.k.a. ground-up bud) and extract (i.e. oils, shatter, and other concentrates). This makes it extremely versatile. For flower, the chamber can hold up to half a gram of herb, which is very generous and will likely last you several sessions. One thing that drives me crazy with virtually every portable vaporizer Ive used is that the bowls are frequently small and hard to load, which leads to spilling herb-crumbs everywhere. That is one of the many things that sets the IQC apart. The surface around the bowl gently slopes inward, so even if you miss the bowl itself its extremely easy to push the rest in with your finger. Its such a small thing, but it ends up making a huge difference. It also has a little stirring/scraping tool that hides away inside it, under the mouthpiece. Again, its a little detail, but its wonderfully convenient.
The rest of the design is rather immaculate, too. It might seem lazy to say that its as if Apple made it, but that feels weirdly accurate in this case. The IQC features clean, rounded lines that fit nicely in your palm. The exterior is made of brushed aluminum that feels silky smooth. The doors all snap shut with magnetic assistance. It has just three buttons and an easy-to-read display. It is, dare I say, elegant to look at?

But the star of the show is the way it hits. The entire airpathfrom the oven to the mouthpieceis zirconia-coated ceramic, so no plastics or metals along the way. This means you dont get any flavors in there except for the weed youre puffing. Not only that, but its extremely easy to dial in your temperature. You can choose to use one of the four pre-programed Smart Paths that start at one temperature and automatically turn the heat up to get maximum extraction out of your bud, or if youre a geek like me you can put it in precision mode and dial in the temperature you want one degree at a time. Personally, I find that 392 degrees Fahrenheit is my favorite temp for most strains, but sometimes I like going a little higher, and sometimes Ill go a bit lower. Its also worth noting that if you dont like the pro-programmed Smart Path settings you can connect the IQC to your phone via Bluetooth and change those numbers.
The ICQ is DaVincis first vaporizer that charges via USB-C. That means you can charge it from zero to full in about two hours (though you can charge it enough for a single session much faster than that). It can also act as a portable power supply, should your phone die and you decide that reading Gizmodo is more important than getting stoned. While the 3,000 mAh battery should get you one to two hours of burn time (depending on your temperatures), its also removable and replaceable, so you could always bring extra batteries if youre going backpacking or something. Spare batteries will run you a very reasonable $13 a pop.
Speaking of accessories, you can get these little ceramic Dosage Pods from DaVinci. They look like little white, porcelain baskets and are designed for when youre on the go and dont want to worry about grinding your bud, emptying out your last bowl, and then reloading it. You can swap in one of these little pods that you filled at home and youre off to the races. Youll also need these pods if you want to vaporize some extract, in addition to DaVincis Extract Kit. Its basically a little ceramic disk and some small cotton pads to keep the oil from getting your vaporizer all goopy. Loading it up is a little bit of a process, but its not bad at all, and the vapor you get from extracts is very clean and nowhere near as lung-destroying as a dabbing rig.

The IQC also features a new Sharesafe Mouthpiece made of an FDA-approved antimicrobial polymer. Theoretically this means its less likely that youll spread cooties while sharing your vape. I did not have lab-testing equipment to test the validity of these claims, but I did share this vape with several friends and none of us got cooties (or covid), so maybe? One thing I can tell you, is that this mouthpiece stays slightly cooler on the lips than the metal mouthpiece on most other vapes, including those DaVinci makes.
It is worth mentioning the IQCs closest competitor is also made by DaVinci. The IQ2 came out before the IQC, and it costs $80 more. What do you get for that $80? Well, if you punch in the percentage of THC and CBD in the strain of weed youre vaping, the IQ2 can measure the size of the hits youre taking and estimate the dosage youre getting. Thats kinda cool, though I found it to be somewhat buggy when I tried it. It also has a dial at the bottom that allows you to control the airflow. Other than that, its effectively the same vaporizer as the IQC, except it lacks USB-C and the Sharesafe Mouthpiece. The IQ2 is excellent, but I think youre better off saving the $80 and getting the IQC.
Really, its hard to find something to dislike about the IQC. If anything, Id say I still think its slightly more expensive than it should be, especially considering you need to buy the Dosage Pods and Extract Kit if you want to vaporize some extract. If this thing came with those items, or if it didnt and it cost $200 instead, I would say everybody who smokes cannabis should buy this, because its healthier, it tastes better, and its just so convenient. At $230 it seems just a liiiittle steep and pushes it a bit close to enthusiast territory. That being said, if you dont mind spending that much, this is the best portable vaporizer Ive ever used. It disappears in your jean pocket, its easy to load, it holds a lot, it lasts a long time, it tastes delicious, and it gets you really high. What more do you need?
